IB Tutor near me in The Valley

Typing IB tutor near me in The Valley returns a list sorted by distance, which is the wrong sort order for a Diploma subject and especially wrong in a community with no school inside it. This page sorts by syllabus instead: what each of the six subject groups assesses, how the core carries three points, the published word and page limits per component, and where marks actually go. Lessons are one-to-one and live over video, so the tutor is chosen for the course they teach.

  • Tutors matched to a named subject at a named level, nationwide pool
  • Published word and page limits set out per assessed component
  • Core support on Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay, bounded

IB & IGCSE in The Valley

Distance is the one thing that does not help here

A near me search is a reasonable instinct applied to the wrong variable. For a swimming teacher, distance is a sensible first filter. For Chemistry at Higher Level, the first filter should be whether the person has taught the current syllabus through examination cycles, knows what each assessment criterion rewards, and can explain why a particular answer scored four marks out of six. None of that correlates with how far their home is from the Al Ain road.

In The Valley the mismatch is sharper than elsewhere. This is a newer community at the southern edge of Dubai with no school inside its own boundary at the time of writing, so students here travel outward in two broad directions and attend several different schools. There is no single local cohort, no shared assessment calendar and no dense local tutor network built around one school gate. A proximity search in this neighbourhood returns a very short list, and shortness is not quality.

So this page is organised around content instead. It sets out what the six Diploma subject groups assess, how the core works and where its three points come from, the published word and page limits for each assessed component, and the places marks reliably disappear. These are the things a parent cannot judge from a tutor profile and the things that determine whether a weekly hour changes a grade or simply fills a Tuesday evening.

Some structure first, because it frames everything else. The Diploma is six subjects, usually three at Higher Level and three at Standard, graded 1 to 7, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. The core contributes up to three further points through a published matrix. Internal assessment carries substantial weight in most subjects — 20% in the sciences and in mathematics — and is submitted to school deadlines months before any examination.

Delivery is online and we say so plainly rather than leaving it in the small print. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, and nobody will arrive at an address in The Valley. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, with a shared whiteboard and past-paper questions on screen. Household visits exist in our India operation only. In a community like this one, that model is what makes a genuine Higher Level specialist available at all rather than whoever happens to live nearby. It also removes the two car journeys either side of a visit, which is what allows a session to run while a student who has already commuted twice can still concentrate on a calculus problem or an organic mechanism. The remainder of this page is the subject detail that should drive the choice instead of the map.

At a glance

  • Six subjects, three usually at Higher Level, plus the Diploma core
  • The core carries up to three points through a published matrix
  • Internal assessment is 20% of the grade in the sciences and mathematics
  • Students here attend several different schools, so the subject drives the match
  • Delivery is live one-to-one video; no home visits anywhere in the UAE
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three stages of the continuum are tutored here, and in a community whose children are spread across several schools the stage matters more than the school name. What follows is what is actually assessed at each.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Four criteria per subject, each marked out of eight, converting to a 1 to 7 grade through published boundaries. One criterion usually covers knowing and understanding; the others cover inquiry, process, communication or reflection depending on the subject group. A student who knows the content and sits on a 4 is losing marks on the criteria that are not about content.

Valley students reach the Middle Years at several different schools, which means neighbours are often working to different assessment calendars and different task schedules. A family here has to track its own school's summative dates rather than relying on the street, and that is the single most useful administrative habit in this community.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Two years, six subjects across the groups, external papers plus an internal assessment in nearly every subject. In the sciences the internal investigation is 20% at both levels; in mathematics the exploration carries the same. Grade boundaries shift between sessions, so the useful target is a mark profile and a component plan rather than a boundary number.

UAE Diploma candidates sit the May session, and every internal deadline a student faces is set by their own school months ahead of it. For Valley students, who have a long commute and therefore less incidental contact time with teachers, knowing those deadlines early matters more than it does for a student living beside their school.

COREAges 16-19 · Across both years

Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS

Theory of Knowledge is assessed through an exhibition of three objects with commentaries and a prescribed-title essay; the Extended Essay is an independent piece of up to 4,000 words with a supervisor and formal reflection sessions. Together they yield up to three points. Neither is taught as content, which is why both are routinely underestimated until a deadline is close.

A long school run reduces the casual corridor contact with a supervisor that students living near their school rely on. For Valley students that makes the earliest core sessions more valuable: narrowing a research question to something answerable in 4,000 words, with sources that are actually accessible, before the drafting starts.

BRIDGEAges 15-17 · The transition year

Into the Diploma from IGCSE or MYP

The step into the Diploma is sharpest in independent written work and in the volume of simultaneous deadlines. A student who scored well at IGCSE by producing accurate short answers finds the first Diploma term genuinely hard, because the programme asks for sustained argument and self-managed coursework instead. That is a method problem, not a capability one.

Because families move into The Valley from across Dubai and from abroad, a student may enter the first Diploma year from a different curriculum sequence altogether. A short diagnostic in the first term names the two or three genuinely unmet topics, which is far cheaper than remediation in the second year.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What follows is the Diploma subject detail that matters: the components, and the specific place marks are lost in each. A tutoring enquiry that names a subject, a level and a component gets a far better first session than one describing a general struggle.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Proof, calculus and algebraic structure carry the losses. Higher Level adds a third paper that is an extended investigative problem, rewarding a sustained written argument rather than a sequence of results. The exploration carries 20% and is assessed partly on mathematical communication.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Technology is assumed, and the recurring failure is presenting a calculator output as an answer rather than as a step needing interpretation. Statistics and real-data modelling dominate; Higher Level adds substantially more on matrices and graph theory than students expect.

Physics

HL and SL

Five themes from space, time and motion to nuclear and quantum physics, with the scientific investigation at 20%. Marks disappear on uncertainty propagation and on explanations that describe an effect without naming the mechanism behind it.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Organised around Structure and Reactivity with the same 20% investigation. Energetics sign errors, curly arrows drawn from the wrong species and equilibrium questions answered qualitatively when a calculation was demanded are the reliable mark-losers.

Biology

HL and SL

Built around unity and diversity, form and function, interaction and interdependence, and continuity and change. Volume rather than difficulty is the obstacle, and terminology precision separates a 5 from a 7 more than recall does.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper 1 guided analysis of unseen texts, Paper 2 comparative essay, an individual oral and, at Higher Level, a written essay. The oral is where confident speakers lose marks, because the global issue must be demonstrably present in both extracts.

Language B and ab initio

HL, SL and ab initio

Assessed across reading, listening, writing and an individual oral. Students lose marks on register and on the conceptual understandings the course specifies, rather than on vocabulary. Coverage is thinner in some languages, and we say so rather than approximate.

Economics

HL and SL

Three commentaries on published news articles form the internal assessment, each within a word limit and each requiring a diagram used in the analysis. Marks are lost summarising the article instead of applying theory, and Higher Level quantitative work needs separate drilling.

Business Management

HL and SL

A case-study subject where the command term governs the ceiling. An accurate answer written to the wrong command term sits in the lowest band, and the internal assessment requires real organisational material rather than invented figures.

Computer Science and Design Technology

HL and SL

Both carry a substantial project with documentation that outweighs the artefact in marks. Students who build fluently often document weakly, which is a diagnosable distinction and usually the right place for tutoring to start.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways a subject-led engagement runs here. The right one depends on whether the problem is content, technique or a core component, and the commute decides when it happens.

Single-subject weekly, content-led

One subject at a named level, one tutor, one evening slot after the school run, working through the syllabus alongside the school. Used where the student has genuine content gaps rather than technique problems, with sessions tracking the school's topic order so the tutoring reinforces rather than duplicates.

  • Sequenced against the school's own topic order
  • Syllabus sections named explicitly in each session note
  • Held at a time that survives the commute, in Gulf Standard Time
  • Free trial on the topic the student currently finds hardest

Technique and past-paper work

For students who know the material and do not score it. Questions are attempted under timing and then dissected against the mark scheme: what the command term demanded, which marks were available, which were forfeited for reasons unrelated to understanding. This is the mode that moves a 5 to a 6 fastest.

  • Questions attempted under exam timing, not read through
  • Mark schemes dissected line by line against the student's own answer
  • Command-term discipline practised explicitly
  • Error patterns tracked across weeks rather than noted once

Core and coursework sessions at the weekend

Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay or a subject internal assessment, worked on the student's own material in a longer weekend block because these need uninterrupted thinking time. The tutor questions the argument and reviews against the published criteria, and writes nothing.

  • Research question or method narrowing in the earliest sessions
  • Criterion-by-criterion review against the official criteria
  • Feedback returned as questions and comments, never as text
  • A written record of feedback, which a school may ask to see

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in The Valley

01

What a proximity search cannot tell you in a community like this one

  • No school inside the community means no local tutoring network
  • The useful filters are subject, level and examination experience
  • No UAE home visits; delivery is live one-to-one video
  • Shared whiteboard, screen-shared past papers, optional recording

Ranking tutors by distance assumes a dense local supply, and The Valley does not have one. With no school inside the community at the time of writing, there is no school gate around which a tutoring network forms, no single cohort sharing an assessment calendar, and no reliable word of mouth about who teaches Higher Level Chemistry well. The list a proximity search returns here is short, and the shortness is a function of the map rather than of the market.

What matters instead is answerable and specific. Has this person taught this subject at this level through examination cycles? Can they state what each assessment criterion rewards without looking it up? Do they know the published word limit for the component the student is working on? Can they explain why an answer scored four out of six rather than simply marking it wrong? Those questions separate a subject specialist from a capable generalist, and none of them involve a postcode.

So, stated plainly: IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE, and no tutor will come to an address in The Valley. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, with a shared whiteboard, screen-shared past-paper questions and an optional recording. Home tutoring exists in our India operation only. What that buys a family at the southern edge of Dubai is the ability to choose on syllabus rather than on distance, which for Higher Level subjects is the whole difference in outcome.

02

The six groups, and what each one actually assesses

Parents new to the Diploma often find the structure opaque, and the opacity has a cost: it is hard to judge where tutoring would help without knowing what each group assesses. Six subjects are taken across the groups, with three usually at Higher Level. Every group has external papers and nearly every subject has an internal assessment, and the balance between those two differs considerably from group to group, which is where the planning value sits.

The practical point is that two subjects with the same grade can need entirely different interventions. A Group 4 science is 20% a student-designed investigation submitted months before the papers, so late tutoring cannot touch a fifth of it. A Group 1 language is assessed partly through an individual oral, which is a rehearsable performance and improves quickly with practice. A Group 3 subject lives or dies on command terms. Knowing which is which is most of what a parent needs to allocate a budget sensibly.

The table below sets out the groups with the component that most often decides the grade and the trap that recurs. It is deliberately practical rather than descriptive, because what a family needs is a way of deciding where an hour a week should go. Courses are revised periodically, so confirm the current structure of your own child's subjects with their teacher rather than relying on any website, including this one, and ask specifically which components have already been submitted, because anything already banked is outside what tutoring can reach.

THE SIX DIPLOMA GROUPS, PRACTICALLY
GroupWhat it coversThe component that most decides the gradeThe recurring trap
Group 1: Studies in Language and LiteratureEnglish A and other first languagesPaper 1 guided analysis and the individual oralA global issue asserted rather than shown in both extracts
Group 2: Language AcquisitionLanguage B and ab initio coursesThe individual oral and the writing paperRegister and conceptual understanding, not vocabulary
Group 3: Individuals and SocietiesEconomics, Business, History, Psychology and othersCommand-term-driven paper answersAn accurate answer written to the wrong command term

Group 5: MathematicsAnalysis and Approaches; Applications and InterpretationThe exploration at 20%, plus Paper 3 at Higher LevelNotation and communication rather than mathematical ability
Group 6 or a second from another groupVisual Arts, Theatre, Music, or a substitute subjectPortfolio and process documentationA strong artefact with thin documented process
03

The core, and where the three points come from

The Diploma core is where the three additional points live and where most late-stage panic happens. Theory of Knowledge is assessed through an exhibition of three objects with written commentaries and a prescribed-title essay. The Extended Essay is an independent research piece of up to 4,000 words with a named supervisor and formal reflection sessions. Together they produce up to three points on a published matrix, and a failing condition in either can affect the award of the Diploma itself.

Neither is content a tutor teaches in the ordinary sense, which is exactly why they are underestimated. A student cannot revise Theory of Knowledge the way they revise a syllabus. What they can do is practise the specific move the course assesses: taking a knowledge question, identifying the assumptions in it, and arguing with real examples rather than abstractions. For the Extended Essay, the equivalent move is narrowing a research question until it can actually be answered in 4,000 words with sources a student in Dubai can reach.

That narrowing session is the highest-value hour in the entire core, and for a Valley student with a long commute and less incidental supervisor contact it matters more than average. What a tutor must not do is write, redraft or supply any part of either piece. We give feedback on the student's own draft, record what feedback was given, and leave the formal process — including the reflection sessions — entirely with the school, where it belongs.

THE CORE COMPONENTS AND WHAT THEY REQUIRE
ComponentWhat it isWhat it rewardsWhere students lose ground
Theory of Knowledge exhibitionThree objects with written commentariesObjects genuinely linked to a prompt, with real-world specificityObjects chosen for convenience and justified afterwards
Theory of Knowledge essayA response to a prescribed titleArguing with examples rather than asserting abstractionsRestating the title and describing areas of knowledge

Reflection sessionsFormal supervised reflectionsGenuine reflection that shows developmentReflections written at the end as a formality
Creativity, Activity, ServiceA portfolio of experiences and outcomesDocumented engagement against the learning outcomesLeft to accumulate and reconstructed late
04

Word and page limits, in one place

This is a table nobody in this market publishes and every Diploma student needs, because the limits are hard constraints rather than guidance and students routinely discover them after writing. Knowing the limit before drafting changes what gets planned: a 4,000-word Extended Essay cannot carry three research questions, and a Theory of Knowledge essay cannot survey an area of knowledge in 1,600 words. The limit is the first piece of information a student should have.

The practical effect of a limit is on scope rather than on style. Students who exceed a limit are usually not over-writing; they chose a topic that cannot be handled in the space available, and the symptoms show up as thin analysis and a conclusion that does not follow. That is why scope-testing is the earliest and most valuable session in any coursework engagement, and why a tutor who starts by asking what the limit is is asking the right question.

Limits and component requirements are set by the IB and are revised from time to time, so treat the figures below as a planning guide and confirm your own child's current requirements with their subject teacher or Diploma coordinator. The principle does not change even when a number does: find the limit, then choose a topic that fits inside it, rather than choosing a topic and discovering the limit during the second draft, when the only options left are deletion and a weaker argument.

ASSESSED COMPONENTS AND THEIR PUBLISHED LIMITS
ComponentLimit as publishedWhat the limit really constrainsWhat to do about it
Extended EssayUp to 4,000 wordsThe number of research questions a student can answerNarrow to one answerable question before drafting
Theory of Knowledge essayA set upper word limit on the prescribed title responseDepth per claim, not the number of claimsPlan two or three developed claims rather than five

05

Where subject marks actually go missing

Across the subjects Valley families ask about most, the losses are more predictable than students expect, and almost none of them are about not knowing enough. They are about answering a different question from the one asked, stopping an explanation one step short of the mechanism, presenting a result without the interpretation the examiner wanted, or writing accurately in a register that does not suit the audience specified. Each of those is correctable within weeks once named.

The single most common pattern is command-term failure, and it is worth labouring because it is so cheap to fix. A student who writes an accurate description when the question said explain has answered a different question, and the mark scheme will not reward the overlap. Strong writers are the most vulnerable, because fluency disguises the gap: a well-constructed paragraph that states rather than justifies scores in the middle band while feeling like a good answer.

The second pattern is interpretation. In Applications and Interpretation, in the sciences' data-based questions and in Economics, the examiner wants the number explained rather than produced: is the model appropriate, is the prediction inside the range of the data, what does the gradient mean in this context. Students who produce correct results and stop there leave marks on the table in every paper they sit. The table sets the recurring losses out by subject area, with a rough sense of how long each takes to correct, so a family can judge what is realistic in the weeks they actually have.

RECURRING LOSSES BY SUBJECT AREA
Subject areaThe lossWhy it happensHow long it takes to correct
Any essay-based subjectAnswering to the wrong command termThe question is read for topic rather than instructionTwo to three weeks of enforcement

06

Points, conditions, and what a target grade really means

Families often fix on a points total without knowing how it is constructed, and that leads to effort in the wrong place. Each of the six subjects is graded 1 to 7, giving a maximum of 42, with up to three further points from the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay matrix for a maximum of 45. The Diploma requires a minimum points total together with a set of additional conditions covering minimum grades and the core, which your Diploma coordinator can state exactly for your child's combination.

The planning consequence is that not all points are equally expensive. Moving a subject from 5 to 6 is usually a technique problem and often achievable in a term. Moving a subject from 6 to 7 is frequently a different order of work. Securing the core points, by contrast, is mostly about starting early and choosing an answerable research question, which costs very little and is the most neglected point on the whole scorecard.

That argues for a specific sequence. Protect the core points first, because they are cheap and because a failing condition there can jeopardise the award itself. Then address whichever subject is furthest below its realistic ceiling, which is usually a command-term or interpretation problem rather than a content one. Confirm the exact award conditions with your coordinator rather than from a website, including this one, because they are precise and they matter more than any general guidance can.

WHERE POINTS ARE CHEAPEST TO GAIN

Securing the core pointsA late start and an unanswerable research questionLow; a few early sessionsFirst Diploma year, as early as possible

What subject-specialist and core support cost in Dubai

Published Dubai figures put a qualified subject tutor working online at AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with one agency advertising IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists are quoted at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270, and one premium provider advertising AED 650. Budget online tutoring runs AED 33 to AED 65 an hour, with Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to AED 65. In-home visits are AED 180 to AED 500 once travel is included.

For the Diploma the useful distinction is between subject work and core work. Subject work benefits from the specialist tier, because what is being bought is component-level judgement at Higher Level. Core work is usually short: a few sessions scoping an Extended Essay question and a few more reviewing drafts, which at the mid-market rate is a modest total and protects up to three points. Measured per point, the core is the cheapest thing on the list and the most frequently skipped.

Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly hour run AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for specialist examination-year support, with monthly packages advertised at AED 799 for eight online sessions. Every figure here belongs to the company or rate guide that published it and was read in October 2026. IB Gram publishes no hourly list on these pages and quotes after a free trial, against the actual subject and level.

Availability, honesty, and what we will not claim

  • Strong coverage in maths, the three sciences, English A, Economics and Business
  • Thinner in some Group 2 languages and Group 6 arts subjects; we will say so
  • No regulator or IB approval, accreditation or partnership claimed anywhere
  • No star ratings, satisfaction scores or improvement statistics published

Coverage is not uniform and pretending otherwise wastes a family's time, particularly in a community where there is no local fallback. Across Mathematics in both routes, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English A, Economics, Business Management and Computer Science, we can usually match a Higher Level specialist quickly. Coverage thins in several Group 2 languages, in some Group 6 arts subjects and in a few smaller Group 3 options, and when it does we say what we can offer and how long a match would take rather than placing an approximation.

On academic honesty the boundary is explicit. A tutor may teach content, explain a criterion, interrogate a research question, question whether a conclusion follows, and give feedback on writing the student produced. A tutor may not write, redraft to completion, select and execute research, or supply a model to adapt. Operations in this market sell completed internal assessments, one advertising them at AED 3,750; buying one is academic misconduct and the consequence falls on the candidate. IB syllabus documents, past papers and mark schemes are the IB's copyright, referenced here rather than distributed.

On regulators and evidence, the position is narrow. Dubai private schools are overseen by KHDA, which u.ae describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate; Abu Dhabi has ADEK, Sharjah SPEA, Ras Al Khaimah its Department of Knowledge, and the federal Ministry of Education covers Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. IB Gram holds no permit, approval, accreditation or partnership from any of them or from the IB, and has no UAE office. We publish no star rating, satisfaction percentage or improvement statistic, because a figure without a sample size, a date and a method is not evidence.

Where we tutor

Where Valley students actually travel

The Valley lies along the Dubai to Al Ain road with no school inside it at the time of writing. These are the directions and neighbourhoods its students connect to, and what each changes about subject tuition.

The Valley

A newer community with a town centre, sports village and parks. With no school inside the boundary, there is no single local cohort, which is exactly why a proximity search for a Higher Level specialist returns so little here.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

One of the two main school-run directions, and a long run in the late afternoon. Students travelling this way are home later than the published school day implies, which moves subject sessions to the early evening.

Nad Al Sheba and Meydan

The other main direction, with several established schools offering both IB and British curricula. Subject-choice conversations from this direction frequently compare two different qualifications rather than two schools.

Arabian Ranches and Mira

Across the Dubailand corridor, with established provision. Valley families travelling this way often ask about the IGCSE into Diploma transition, where the jump in independent written work catches students out.

Town Square

Along the corridor with its own school provision, which gives families there a materially shorter day. The comparison is useful because it isolates exactly what the commute costs a Valley student in usable hours.

Mudon and Remraam

Villa and apartment communities off Al Qudra Road with outbound school runs of their own. Local supply of Higher Level subject specialists is thin in all of these neighbourhoods for the same structural reason.

Damac Hills 2 and the southern communities

Further south, newer still, and reliant on long runs in both directions. Families moving between these and The Valley usually change school too, which produces specific unmet topics rather than general weakness.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in The Valley

The Silicon Oasis, Academic City and Nad Al Sheba direction

One of the two directions Valley students travel in. The mix of IB and British-curriculum provision here is why the Diploma subject conversation in this community is often a choice between qualifications, and why cohort sizes vary considerably between neighbours.

The Arabian Ranches, Mira and Dubailand direction

The other direction, including schools running the full IB continuum. Families here comparing Diploma options look at whether a given Higher Level subject is offered at all and whether it can be timetabled alongside the others a student wants.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the subject, the level and the component

The most useful opening message names the subject, whether it is Standard or Higher Level, and which component is the concern: a paper, an internal assessment, the Extended Essay. A photograph of a marked piece is worth three paragraphs of description because it shows where marks were lost.

  2. 02

Tell us when your child is genuinely home

In a community with no school inside it, that answer decides the structure. Subject sessions usually belong on a weekday evening after the run, while core and coursework work belongs in a weekend block where uninterrupted thinking time actually exists.

  3. 03

A free trial on a genuine weakness

Run by the tutor who would continue, on the hardest current topic rather than a safe demonstration, ending with the tutor naming what they would address first and why, in syllabus language. If the match is wrong, say so and we will propose someone else.

  4. 04

A written plan in syllabus terms

You receive the sequence of sessions named by syllabus section and component, the between-session work, and what each stage should fix. A plan written in generalities cannot be held to account; one written in syllabus references can be checked against the next marked piece.

  5. 05

Weekly sessions with an error log

Each session ends with a note recording which error categories recurred rather than which topics were covered. Across a month that log shows whether the same mistakes are disappearing. If they are not, we change the approach or the tutor rather than adding hours.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Chosen by syllabus, not by distance

In a community with no school inside it, a proximity search returns a very short list. Online delivery means your child is matched to someone who teaches that exact subject at that exact level, which for Higher Level work is most of the outcome.

Word limits, component weightings and where the core points come from are set out on this page because they are the information a family needs to plan, and because almost nobody else in this market publishes them.

The core treated as cheap points

A few early sessions scoping an Extended Essay question protect up to three points, which measured per point is the best value in the Diploma. It is also the most frequently skipped work, usually because nobody told the family it was available.

Mark schemes worked explicitly

Sessions dissect why an answer scored what it scored: which command term applied, which marks were available, which were forfeited for reasons unrelated to understanding. That is where most recoverable marks in a Diploma subject sit.

A structure that survives the commute

Weekday evening sessions for subject work, weekend blocks for coursework. We plan around when your child is actually home rather than agreeing to a time that sounds better and lapses by the third week.

An honest no when coverage is thin

In niche Diploma subjects we will tell you what we can offer and how long a match would take rather than placing an approximate tutor. For a subject with a coursework component, an out-of-date tutor is worse than none.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in The Valley: your questions answered

Does a tutor need to be near The Valley for Diploma subjects?+

No, and in this community the question answers itself. There is no school inside The Valley at the time of writing, so there is no local cohort and no tutoring network built around a school gate. A proximity search returns a very short list here, and shortness is not quality. What determines whether a grade moves is whether the tutor has taught that subject at that level through examination cycles. IB Gram delivers online one-to-one and sends no tutors to UAE addresses, which is what makes a genuine specialist available at all.

How many points does the Diploma core actually carry?+

Up to three, awarded jointly from Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay through a published matrix, on top of a maximum of 42 from six subjects graded 1 to 7. A failing condition in the core can also affect whether the Diploma is awarded, which is why it matters beyond the points themselves. Your Diploma coordinator can state the exact award conditions for your child's combination, and it is worth asking in the first year rather than the second.

What is the word limit for the Extended Essay?+

Up to 4,000 words, and knowing that before drafting changes what gets planned. A 4,000-word essay cannot carry three research questions or survey a field; it can answer one narrow question properly. Students who exceed the limit are usually not over-writing but have chosen a topic that cannot be handled in the space, and the symptoms appear as thin analysis and a conclusion that does not follow. Scope-testing the question is therefore the most valuable single session in the whole core.

Which components are worth tutoring first for a Diploma student?+

The core, because it is cheap and the points are protected rather than earned late, then any internal assessment that has not yet been scoped, because those carry 20% in the sciences and mathematics and are submitted to school deadlines months before the examinations. Paper technique comes third, since it remains improvable in the final terms. Working in that order usually costs less and protects more than starting with whichever subject grade looks worst on the most recent report.

Why do strong writers lose marks on Diploma essays?+

Because fluency disguises command-term failure. A well-constructed paragraph that states a position without justifying it reads well and scores in the middle band, and the student cannot see why. Mark schemes award a specific shape of response per command term: explain wants mechanisms, evaluate wants a supported judgement, discuss wants several perspectives. The correction is mechanical rather than literary — underline the command term, write the mark allocation beside it, produce exactly that structure — and it is one of the fastest improvements available.

Can a tutor help with Theory of Knowledge, which has no syllabus to teach?+

Yes, by practising the move the course actually assesses rather than teaching content. For the essay, that means taking a prescribed title, identifying the assumptions inside it, and arguing with real, specific examples rather than abstractions about areas of knowledge. For the exhibition, it means testing whether three chosen objects genuinely connect to the prompt and can be justified briefly. What a tutor may not do is write, redraft or supply any part of either piece, and the formal process stays with the school.

Our son is at a school in Silicon Oasis. Does that change anything?+

It changes timing rather than matching. What we need is the subject, the level and his school's own internal deadlines, because those are set by the school rather than the IB and they drive the order of sessions. The commute means the first realistic weekday slot is early evening, and coursework work is better placed in a weekend block. In The Valley, neighbours often attend schools in different directions with different calendars, so we work from your own school's dates rather than a neighbourhood assumption.

How much does a Higher Level subject specialist cost online in Dubai?+

Published figures put qualified subject tutors working online at AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with one agency advertising IB from AED 200, and IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 or more, with TutorChase publishing AED 270. Bestimate's monthly estimate for one weekly hour is AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for specialist examination-year support. Those figures were read in October 2026 and belong to the companies that published them, not to us.

Is it worth paying for core support when the points are only worth three?+

Measured per point it is the best value in the Diploma. A few sessions scoping an Extended Essay research question and reviewing drafts costs a fraction of a term of weekly subject tutoring and protects up to three points, which is more than most students gain from a grade improvement in a single subject. The core is also where a failing condition can affect the award itself. It is skipped most often not because families judge it poor value but because nobody mentions it until the deadline is close.

What happens if we need a subject you cannot cover?+

We tell you, and we tell you how long a match would take, rather than filling the slot with someone approximate. Coverage is strong in Mathematics in both routes, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English A, Economics, Business Management and Computer Science at both levels, and thins in several Group 2 languages, some Group 6 arts subjects and a few smaller Group 3 options. For a subject with a coursework component, a tutor who is a syllabus revision behind is worse for a student than a clear no.

Should coursework sessions be at the weekend?+

In this community, usually yes. Internal assessments, Extended Essay drafting and whole-paper practice all need uninterrupted thinking time rather than a squeezed hour after a long school run, and that time genuinely exists only at the weekend here. A ninety-minute or two-hour weekend block plus one weekday evening hour for subject content is the structure that works best for Valley Diploma students, and it is more productive than two tired weekday sessions.

Where do the materials used in a session come from?+

No, and be cautious of anyone offering an unlimited bank of them. IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are the IB's copyright. We reference them, cite the official source, and work from material your child's school holds legitimately, with questions shown on screen during sessions and the published criteria used as written. A service advertising wholesale downloads invites a fair question about provenance, and occasionally about whether material has been released at all.

Our daughter wants a 40-point total. Is that a useful target?+

It is a useful ambition and a poor plan on its own, because not all points cost the same. Securing the core points is cheap and early. Moving a subject from 5 to 6 is usually technique and achievable in a term. Moving one from 6 to 7 is a different order of work requiring a year of runway. A better plan names which subjects are furthest below their realistic ceiling, protects the core, and leaves the total as an outcome rather than an instruction.

Are your tutors IB examiners?+

We do not make that claim, because current examiner status is rarely verifiable and it is widely asserted in this market without support. What we will tell you about any tutor is which subject and level they teach, how long they have taught it to examination, and what they have taught recently. Examiner status is also sometimes used to imply access to marking, boundaries or paper content, which it does not confer. If a provider leans on the label, asking how it is evidenced is a reasonable question.

How long before we can tell whether a subject engagement is working?+

About four weeks for technique causes such as command terms or unwritten method, because those appear directly in the next marked piece. Content gaps take one to three weeks per topic. Coursework work is judged against criteria rather than marks until the school assesses it, so progress there shows as a tighter research question and a draft that survives criterion review. Session notes record which error categories recurred, so the trend sits in the record rather than in impressions.

Subject, level, component — and when your child is home

Four pieces of information get the first session right: the subject, whether it is Standard or Higher Level, which component is the concern, and the time your child is genuinely home after the school run. A photograph of a recently marked piece usually completes the picture. Next is a free trial lesson with the tutor who would continue, on a real weakness rather than a demonstration topic, followed by a written plan in syllabus terms. Lessons run one-to-one over live video into The Valley in Gulf Standard Time, with no home visits anywhere in the UAE. If we cannot match the subject properly, we will say so rather than approximate.
