IGCSE Science Tutor in The Valley

An IGCSE science tutor in The Valley should be able to say which of the three sciences is actually losing marks and why, because biology, chemistry and physics fail in completely different ways. This page works at that level: the exact wording biology mark schemes reward, the moles discipline chemistry assumes, the mathematics hiding inside physics marks, and what the practical paper really asks. Lessons are one-to-one and live over video, with diagrams, calculations and graph work on a shared whiteboard.

  • Matched to a syllabus code and tier: Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel
  • Biology terminology worked against the mark scheme's own wording
  • Chemistry and physics losses separated from the arithmetic behind them
  • Free trial lesson on the subject that is actually drifting, with the tutor who continues

IB & IGCSE in The Valley

Three sciences, three completely different failure modes

The least useful thing a family can conclude is that a child needs help with science. Biology, chemistry and physics are three separate subjects with three separate mark schemes, and they fail in ways that have almost nothing in common. Biology marks are lost on the exact wording of an explanation. Chemistry marks are lost on calculation discipline, most often moles. Physics marks are lost on the mathematics wrapped around the physics. Treating those as one problem is how a term of tutoring passes without a grade moving.

So this page is written subject by subject. It sets out the specific wording biology mark schemes reward and what students write instead, the moles and formula discipline chemistry assumes without teaching, the mathematical operations that quietly cost physics marks, and what the practical skills paper actually asks for in both boards' international specifications. The aim is that a parent can read a marked paper afterwards and name the cause themselves.

Start with the codes, because the boards differ. Cambridge biology, chemistry and physics are 0610, 0620 and 0625, with Coordinated Sciences double award at 0654 and Combined Science at 0653. The Pearson Edexcel separate sciences are 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1, with Science Double Award at 4SD0. These are separate qualifications whose past papers are not interchangeable, and students on a double award frequently believe they are taking triple science.

The Valley makes that confirmation more necessary than elsewhere. This is a newer community on the road to Al Ain with no school inside its own boundary at the time of writing, so students travel outward in two directions and attend several different schools entering different specifications. The child next door may be sitting a different qualification in the same subject, which means a board cannot be inferred from a neighbour and the examinations officer is the only reliable source.

Delivery is stated plainly: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, and nobody will arrive at an address in The Valley. Lessons are one-to-one and live over video, with questions shared on screen, a whiteboard for working and diagrams, and an optional recording. Home visits exist in our India operation only. For the science practical papers, which are written rather than laboratory-assessed in both international specifications, the online format loses nothing at all. What it does remove is the two car journeys either side of a visit, which in a household where the school run has already taken an hour from the day is the difference between a session a student can use and one they merely sit through. The rest of this page is the subject detail that should decide where an hour a week goes.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three stages, with different work in each. In a community where children attend several different schools, the stage your own child is at matters more than what the street is doing.

PREAges 13-14 · Year 9

Year 9, before the specifications begin

The science specifications assume four things they do not examine directly: rearranging a formula, handling units and prefixes, reading a graph axis properly, and writing an explanation that gives a reason rather than a description. All four are cheap to build here and expensive to retrofit in Year 11, and all four transfer across the three subjects at once.

Families move into The Valley from across Dubai and from abroad, so mid-phase school changes are routine. A child joining a British-curriculum school in Year 9 usually has two or three specific unmet science topics rather than a general weakness, and a diagnostic before the course begins is the cheapest intervention available in this community.

Y10Ages 14-15 · Year 10

Year 10, three subjects at once

Content arrives in all three sciences simultaneously, which is the year in which one of them usually begins to drift unnoticed. Internal examinations at the end of the year inform tier and award-route decisions for Year 11. The behind-schedule signal is specific: one subject where last term's work can no longer be done while the other two hold.

The triple against double award question becomes real in Year 10 and is an entry decision with a school deadline rather than an opinion. Because Valley children attend several different schools, the timing differs between neighbours, so ask your own school when the decision is finalised rather than relying on a conversation at the park.

Y11Ages 15-16 · Year 11

Year 11, converting content into marks

One mock block, entries closing months ahead of the papers, predicted grades drawn from the mocks, then study leave and the series. In science almost all available improvement in this year is in explanation technique, terminology precision and the practical skills paper, all of which are learnable quickly and all of which are usually under-practised.

For Valley students the commute decides the structure. One protected weekday evening on the subject that is actually drifting, plus a weekend block for the practical paper and whole papers, is what survives three terms. Three tutored science hours a week in a commuting household leaves the between-session work undone for all of them.

POSTAges 16+

Into A Level or IB sciences

Science grades act as thresholds for A Level or IB Higher Level study, set per school and often per subject. A student on a double award should check early whether the intended post-16 route accepts it for the science they want to continue, because some courses prefer or require the separate sciences for progression.

For UAE university plans, Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track requires five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic Education from that count, plus one Advanced Level subject at grade E or two Advanced Subsidiary Level subjects. Verify current rules on moe.gov.ae.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What follows is the content map, organised by where each subject actually loses marks rather than by syllabus order. Naming a subject and a topic produces a far better first session than describing science as the problem.

Biology: transport and exchange

Cambridge 0610; Pearson 4BI1

Osmosis, diffusion and active transport answers lose marks for omitting the phrase concentration gradient, and for describing movement without stating it is passive or requires energy. The mark scheme wants specific words, and a paraphrase that means the same thing often earns nothing.

Biology: enzymes and metabolism

Cambridge 0610; Pearson 4BI1

Students write that an enzyme is killed rather than denatured, or that the active site changes shape without saying the substrate no longer fits. Both lose marks. Rate graphs require the limiting factor to be named rather than implied, which is the second recurring loss here.

Biology: genetics and inheritance

Cambridge 0610; Pearson 4BI1

Punnett square answers lose marks for incomplete notation, missing gamete rows or ratios given without the phenotypes they belong to. Terminology must be exact: allele against gene, genotype against phenotype, and the difference matters to the mark scheme in every question.

Chemistry: moles and reacting masses

Cambridge 0620; Pearson 4CH1

The single largest source of lost marks across the subject. Approximate moles work contaminates every later step, and students who round early produce answers outside the acceptable range even with a correct method. The fix is procedural rather than conceptual.

Chemistry: qualitative analysis and tests

Cambridge 0620; Pearson 4CH1

Test answers need the reagent, the observation and the conclusion, and students routinely give two of the three. Precipitate colours and gas tests must be stated exactly as the specification expects rather than approximately described.

Chemistry: electrolysis and redox

Cambridge 0620; Pearson 4CH1

Half-equation answers lose marks for unbalanced charges and for electrons on the wrong side. Students who learn the pattern of oxidation at the anode and reduction at the cathode as a rule without the reasoning fail the unfamiliar electrolyte questions.

Physics: electricity and circuits

Cambridge 0625; Pearson 4PH1

Where higher-tier candidates drop the most marks, usually by treating a potential divider as independent components or by rearranging a formula after substituting rather than before. The physics is often sound and the arithmetic is not.

Physics: forces, moments and equilibrium

Cambridge 0625; Pearson 4PH1

Moment calculations lose marks on distances measured from the wrong point and on units left in centimetres. Equilibrium questions require both conditions to be stated, and students frequently satisfy one and assume the other.

Practical skills, all three sciences

All international specifications

Assessed on a written paper rather than in a laboratory. It asks for variable identification, apparatus reading, method criticism with the effect stated, results tables with correct units, graph plotting and comment on anomalies. The question shapes repeat heavily across series.

Arabic and the UAE mandatory subjects

First language and additional language

KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies in Dubai private schools whatever the licensed curriculum, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students. These lessons are part of why a Year 11 science week has less room than a tutoring plan assumes.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes, chosen by which of the three sciences is actually failing and why. Assuming all three need help is the most expensive error available to a science family.

One subject, diagnosed from marked work

The standard engagement. Marked papers from all three sciences are read together to find whether the cause is shared or specific, then one subject is worked weekly until the failure stops. This is cheaper than it sounds, because shared causes such as explanation wording or arithmetic lift all three subjects at once.

  • Diagnosis from marked work in all three sciences, not one
  • One subject worked weekly, with the cause named in each note
  • Shared causes addressed once rather than three times
  • Free trial on the subject that is genuinely drifting

A terminology and explanation block

Short and specific, aimed at the wording science mark schemes actually reward. Students write accurate paraphrases and lose the marks, because the scheme asks for named terms. Four to six sessions on this changes marks in all three sciences simultaneously, which makes it the best return available in a triple timetable.

  • Mark scheme wording learned against the student's own answers
  • Explanation questions drilled against the command word
  • Named terms practised until they appear automatically
  • Works across biology, chemistry and physics at once

A weekend practical paper block

Four to six weekend sessions on the practical skills paper, which is examined in writing in both boards' international specifications and is heavily patterned. It belongs at the weekend in this community, because graph and table work needs uninterrupted attention a weekday evening after a long run does not provide.

  • Variables, apparatus, method criticism, tables and graphs
  • Worked from the boards' own past questions
  • Covers all three sciences, since the skills transfer
  • Usually four to six sessions rather than a term

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in The Valley

01

Biology: the subject where the exact words are the marks

Biology is the science families most often misread, because a student can write an answer that is entirely true and score nothing. Mark schemes in this subject reward named terms rather than correct meaning. An answer explaining that water moves from where there is more of it to where there is less is accurate and will not earn the mark reserved for concentration gradient. Students conclude the marking is unfair; in fact the specification is explicit about the vocabulary it expects.

The recurring examples are consistent enough to be worth publishing. Enzymes are denatured, not killed. The active site changes shape so the substrate no longer fits, and both halves of that sentence carry marks. Transport is passive or requires energy, and saying neither loses the distinction. In genetics, allele and gene are different words, as are genotype and phenotype, and ratios must be attached to the phenotypes they describe. None of this is conceptually hard; all of it is specific.

The fix is mechanical and fast, which is why it represents good value. Four to six sessions working the student's own marked answers against the published wording usually eliminates the pattern, and the gain shows up in chemistry and physics explanation questions too, because the underlying habit — name the mechanism in the terms the scheme expects — transfers. It is also something a parent can reinforce at home without any subject knowledge, simply by asking which word was missing.

02

Chemistry: the subject where the arithmetic is the subject

Chemistry at this level is less about understanding than about discipline, and the discipline is almost entirely moles. Reacting mass, concentration, gas volume and titration questions all route through the same arithmetic, and a student who is approximate there will lose marks across the entire paper regardless of how well they understand bonding or the periodic table. The marks are not lost where the difficulty feels greatest; they are lost in the routine step everyone assumes is safe.

Three habits account for most of it. Rounding early, which produces a final answer outside the acceptable range even with a correct method. Omitting units or using inconsistent ones, particularly between grams and kilograms or between cubic centimetres and litres. And failing to write the balanced equation first, which makes the ratio step guesswork. Each is procedural, each takes two to four weeks of enforcement rather than explanation, and together they are usually worth more marks than any topic.

The second cluster is qualitative analysis, where answers need the reagent, the observation and the conclusion, and students give two of the three. Precipitate colours and gas tests have to be stated as the specification expects rather than approximately described. This is memorisation rather than reasoning, and it responds to short, frequent testing instead of long sessions, which suits the weekday slot in a commuting household well. A student who can produce reagent, observation and conclusion automatically has removed a predictable set of losses from every paper they sit.

CHEMISTRY DISCIPLINE ERRORS AND THEIR COST

03

Physics: how much of it is actually mathematics

A substantial share of lost physics marks at IGCSE are not physics losses at all. The commonest profile is a student who identifies the right relationship, selects the right formula, and then loses the mark by rearranging after substituting, mishandling a prefix, or reading a gradient from a curve as though it were straight. Under timed conditions those slips multiply, and the student concludes they are bad at physics when they are in fact slow at algebra.

This matters for how a family spends. A student in that position does not need more physics teaching; they need three or four weeks of dense manipulation and unit practice in physics contexts, which is cheaper and faster than a term of content review. It is also why we ask for a marked paper before the first session: the distinction between a physics gap and an arithmetic one is visible in the working and invisible in a conversation.

There is a useful diagnostic signal families can read themselves. If chemistry and physics are both drifting while biology holds up, the cause is almost certainly arithmetic rather than two separate content problems, because biology carries terminology and volume while the other two carry calculation. One engagement on the mathematics inside science then lifts two subjects at once, which is the cheapest outcome available in a triple-science timetable and the one most often missed. It is also readable by a parent without any subject knowledge, simply by comparing three marked papers side by side.

The practical skills paper, and what a mark scheme accepts

In both boards' international specifications practical skills are assessed on a written paper rather than through laboratory assessment, which means a meaningful share of each science grade can be prepared from past questions. It is also the component students practise least, because it does not look like revision: there is nothing to re-read and no notes to highlight, so it quietly gets skipped by otherwise diligent candidates.

What the paper asks is narrow and repetitive. Identify the independent, dependent and controlled variables in a given method. Read an apparatus diagram or a scale. Criticise the procedure and suggest improvements, with the effect of each improvement stated rather than implied. Complete a results table with consistent units and decimal places. Plot data and draw a line of best fit rather than joining points. Comment on an anomaly, saying what it does to the result.

That last distinction is where most marks are lost. Identifying an anomaly earns little; explaining its effect earns the mark. The same applies to improvements: suggesting more repeats is worth nothing unless the student says what repeating improves. Because the question shapes recur across series, twenty worked past questions covers nearly everything the paper can ask, and the skills transfer across all three sciences, which makes a short block on it the best return in a triple timetable. The table below sets out the six skills with what earns nothing beside what earns the mark, which is the distinction most students have never had explained to them.

Core, Extended and the award routes compared

Confirming the route matters as much in science as the board does, and students are frequently wrong about it. Cambridge separate sciences at 0610, 0620 and 0625 split into Core and Extended, with Core capping the achievable grade and Extended reaching the top bands while carrying harder content. Coordinated Sciences double award at 0654 and Combined Science at 0653 cover all three sciences across fewer papers with reduced depth per subject. Pearson offers separate sciences and Science Double Award at 4SD0.

A student on a double award who revises from separate-science past papers will spend weeks on content they were never taught, which is a waste that no amount of tutoring recovers. Equally, a student entered for Core who revises Extended material is working beyond their paper. Both situations are common and both are solved by one email to the examinations officer asking for the syllabus codes rather than the subject names.

The route also has consequences beyond Year 11. Some post-16 science courses prefer or require the separate sciences for progression to A Level or Higher Level study in that subject, and schools set their own entry requirements. A student on a double award with a particular science in view should ask their school for its stated requirement while there is still time to adjust the entry route, rather than discovering a constraint at the point of selection. In this community that question is worth asking directly, because children attend several different schools and the thresholds are not the same at each.

Which subject to tutor, and why not all three

  • Read all three marked papers before deciding which subject to tutor
  • Chemistry and physics weak, biology fine, usually means arithmetic
  • All three weak on long answers usually means explanation wording
  • Sequencing one subject at a time beats three in parallel

A student taking three separate sciences has three full subjects, and the instinct when marks fall is to tutor all of them. In a household with an outbound school run that is three hours a week plus the between-session work, which is more than a Year 11 student carrying nine or ten subjects and the mandatory UAE lessons can absorb. The result is three half-used engagements and a family concluding that tutoring does not work.

The better approach is to read the pattern across marked papers in all three subjects, because the cause is frequently shared. If chemistry and physics are drifting while biology holds, the cause is arithmetic and one engagement fixes two subjects. If all three are weak on long-answer questions, the cause is explanation wording and one engagement fixes three. If biology alone is weak, it is terminology precision, which is specific to that subject but still a short block rather than a term.

Only when the papers genuinely show three separate content problems is three-subject tutoring the right answer, and in that case the honest advice is usually to sequence rather than parallelise: one subject at a time, rotated, with the between-session work actually completed. That costs a third as much in any given month and produces more, which is why we ask for all three sets of marked work before recommending anything at all. That reading costs nothing and it is the single most useful thing a family can do before spending a dirham.

07

What science tutoring costs, and the quantity question

Read the published Dubai bands the way a three-science family has to read them, which is per subject and then multiplied. A qualified subject tutor working online is quoted at AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with Unitors advertising IGCSE from AED 150, so one weekly hour in each of biology, chemistry and physics starts near AED 450 a week before anyone has asked whether all three need it. Budget online tutoring runs AED 33 to AED 65, with Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to AED 65, and that is the only band where buying three subjects at once is casually affordable, which is part of why the paragraph below argues against buying three. Above the qualified tier, specialists in IGCSE and A Level are quoted at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270, while in-home visits sit at AED 180 to AED 500 once travel is included, a figure that quietly assumes a tutor can reach The Valley and get home inside the same evening.

For IGCSE science the qualified online tier is usually the right purchase, because the work is diagnosis and enforcement rather than rare expertise. The more consequential decision is quantity. One hour a week chosen by diagnosis, with the between-session work completed, produces more than three hours chosen by subject with the work left undone, and costs a third as much. In a commuting household that is not a preference; it is arithmetic about available evenings.

Monthly packages advertised in this market include AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour home visits, and Bestimate's monthly estimates for one weekly hour run AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market. Every figure here belongs to the company or rate guide that published it and was read in October 2026. IB Gram publishes no hourly list on these pages and quotes after a free trial, for the specific subject, code and tier your child is entered for.

Materials, honesty and the regulator position

  • Past papers and mark schemes referenced, never hosted or distributed
  • No assessed work written, redrafted to completion, sourced or sold
  • No regulator or board approval, accreditation or partnership claimed
  • No star ratings, satisfaction scores or improvement statistics published

The most common request we get in science is a shared drive full of past papers, and it is the request we decline. Cambridge and Pearson hold the copyright in their syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables. What we do instead is cite the official source and work from the material your child's school legitimately holds, with questions put on screen during the session, which for the practical paper is the better arrangement anyway: a question worked through live is where the mark-scheme wording set out in section three actually gets enforced, and a downloaded PDF enforces nothing. A service advertising an unlimited paper bank invites a fair question about provenance, and the school's own holdings are in any case the papers your child will be marked against.

Where a science subject carries assessed work completed outside the examination hall, the boundary is explicit: submitted work must be the student's own and is authenticated by the school. A tutor may teach the content, explain the criteria, question whether a method is reproducible and comment on the student's own writing. A tutor may not write any part of a submission, redraft to completion, or supply a model to be edited. One operation in this market sells completed internal assessments for another qualification at AED 3,750, which shows what the trade costs and why it should be refused.

On regulators: Dubai private schools are overseen by KHDA, which u.ae describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate, with ADEK in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, SPEA in Sharjah, the Department of Knowledge in Ras Al Khaimah and the federal Ministry of Education in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation or partnership from any of them or from Cambridge or Pearson, and no UAE office. An individual tutoring privately in the UAE needs a MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years.

09

Fitting three sciences into a Valley week

  • Mandatory UAE lessons take time a tutoring plan often ignores
  • Terminology and arithmetic work suit short weekday sessions
  • Practical paper and whole-paper work belong in a weekend block
  • Ramadan sessions move after Iftar with the same tutor retained

A Year 11 student taking three sciences has a full timetable before any tutoring is added, and in this community an outbound school run in one of two directions takes more of the day than families expect. Add the KHDA-mandated Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies lessons and a sport, and the number of genuinely free evenings is usually one, not four. Any plan that assumes otherwise will be abandoned by the third week.

The structure that works splits by the type of work. Terminology testing and arithmetic drills are short and benefit from frequency, so they fit a weekday evening slot and daily between-session sets. The practical skills paper, whole papers and graph work need uninterrupted attention, which in a community with a long commute genuinely exists only at the weekend. One weekday slot and one weekend block is the pattern that survives all three terms.

The UAE calendar shapes the rest. The working week runs Monday to Friday with a half-day Friday, leaving Saturday and Sunday as the only full days. During Ramadan school hours shorten and the useful window moves after Iftar, where a science session is frequently better than any afternoon slot in that month. We hold slots in Gulf Standard Time, move them after Iftar with the same tutor retained, and pause blocks during a school's own examination fortnight rather than adding sessions that produce fatigue. We also keep the same tutor across a term rather than rotating students to fill a diary, because knowing which of the three sciences is the real problem is information that takes weeks to rebuild with somebody new.

Where we tutor

The Valley and the schools its science students attend

The Valley lies along the Dubai to Al Ain road with no school inside its boundary at the time of writing. Each entry notes what differs practically for a science session.

The Valley

A newer community with a town centre, sports village and parks and no school inside it. With three sciences running and an outbound school run, the number of usable weekday evenings is the binding constraint rather than the choice of subject.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

One of two main school-run directions and a long late-afternoon journey. Students travelling this way arrive home later than the published school day suggests, which pushes practical paper work to the weekend.

Nad Al Sheba and Meydan

The other main direction, with schools entering a mix of Cambridge and Pearson specifications and a mix of award routes. That variety is why confirming your own child's codes matters more here than elsewhere.

Arabian Ranches and Mira

Across the Dubailand corridor with established British-curriculum provision. Triple science is standard in several of these schools, which is why the three-subject workload question dominates enquiries from this direction.

Town Square

Along the corridor with its own school provision, which gives families there a shorter day. The contrast shows what the commute costs a Valley student when three subjects are competing for the same evenings.

Mudon and Remraam

Communities off Al Qudra Road with outbound runs of their own. Mid-year moves between these and The Valley are frequent and produce the unmet-topic pattern that makes a diagnostic worthwhile.

Damac Hills 2 and the southern communities

Newer and further out with long journeys in both directions. Families relocating into The Valley from here usually change school, which often means a different board and a different award route.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in The Valley

The Silicon Oasis, Academic City and Nad Al Sheba direction

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Get all the syllabus codes

Whether your child sits three separate sciences, a coordinated or combined double award, or a mix, and the codes rather than the subject names. In this community children attend several different schools entering different specifications, so a neighbour's answer is not evidence about your own child.

  2. 02

Send marked work from all three sciences

Not only the weakest. The pattern across the three is what shows whether the cause is shared — arithmetic, explanation wording — or genuinely three separate content problems, and that determines whether you need one tutored hour a week or two.

  3. 03

A free trial on the subject that is drifting

Run by the tutor who would continue, using an unfamiliar question rather than a revision topic. It ends with the tutor stating which subject they would address and whether the cause is shared across the three. If the match is wrong, we propose someone else.

  4. 04

A written plan naming subjects and causes

You receive a plan naming the subject, the specific topics or skills, and whether a terminology or practical block is part of it, plus the date it counts back from and the weekday and weekend split. Named causes mean the plan can be checked.

  5. 05

Weekly sessions with a classified error log

Each note records which error classes appeared: wording, arithmetic, command word, data handling or content. Over a month those classes either thin out or they do not, and if they do not we change the method or the tutor rather than adding a second subject.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Three sciences treated as three subjects

Biology fails on wording, chemistry on calculation discipline, physics on the mathematics inside it. A tutor who treats science as one subject will spend the term on whichever part they prefer, which is how a family pays for work the student did not need.

Shared causes found before money is spent

If chemistry and physics are drifting while biology holds, the cause is usually arithmetic and one engagement lifts two subjects. We read marked work from all three before recommending anything, because that diagnosis is free.

The practical paper taken seriously

It is examined in writing in both international specifications, the question shapes repeat, and almost nobody practises it. A four to six session block raises marks across all three sciences, which makes it the best return in a triple timetable.

Matched to the code and the award route

Students on a double award frequently believe they are taking triple science and revise from the wrong past papers. We confirm the codes before the first session so that no week is spent on content that was never taught.

Honest about the quantity

One hour chosen by diagnosis with the between-session work completed beats three hours chosen by subject with the work undone, and costs a third as much. In a commuting household that is arithmetic about evenings rather than a preference.

Claims that can be checked

Every AED figure names its publisher and the month read, and the regulator descriptions are quoted from u.ae. We publish no ratings or improvement statistics and claim no approval from KHDA, ADEK, the Ministry, Cambridge or Pearson.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in The Valley: your questions answered

Why does our daughter lose biology marks when her answers are correct?+

Because biology mark schemes reward named terms rather than correct meaning. Writing that water moves from where there is more of it to where there is less is accurate and will not earn the mark reserved for concentration gradient. Enzymes are denatured, not killed. Transport is passive or requires energy. Allele and gene are different words. None of this is conceptually hard, but all of it is specific, and four to six sessions working her own marked answers against the published wording usually eliminates the whole pattern.

What single habit costs the most chemistry marks?+

Approximate moles work, by a wide margin. Reacting mass, concentration, gas volume and titration questions all route through the same arithmetic, so a student who rounds early or uses inconsistent units produces answers outside the acceptable range even with a perfect method, across the whole paper. Writing the balanced equation before anything else is the second habit, because without it the ratio step becomes guesswork. Both are procedural, both take two to four weeks of enforcement, and together they are usually worth more marks than any single topic.

Chemistry and physics are both slipping but biology is fine. What does that mean?+

Almost always that the cause is arithmetic rather than two separate content problems. Chemistry and physics both carry calculation, rearranging, prefixes and significant figures, while biology carries terminology and volume. A student holding up in biology and drifting in the other two is usually losing marks to the mathematics inside science, and one engagement of three or four weeks on that lifts two subjects at once. It is the cheapest outcome available in a triple-science timetable and the one families most often miss.

How do we confirm whether our son is on triple or double award science?+

Email the examinations officer and ask for the syllabus codes rather than the subject names. Cambridge separate sciences are 0610, 0620 and 0625; Coordinated Sciences double award is 0654 and Combined Science is 0653. The Pearson separate sciences are 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1, with Science Double Award at 4SD0. This matters because a student on a double award who revises from separate-science past papers spends weeks on content never taught, and in The Valley a neighbour's answer carries no information about a different school.

Is the practical paper really worth separate preparation?+

It is the best return available in a science timetable. In both boards' international specifications practical skills are examined on a written paper, the question shapes repeat heavily across series, and almost nobody practises it because there is nothing to re-read. Twenty worked past questions covers nearly everything it can ask, and the skills transfer across all three sciences at once. Most of the marks hinge on one distinction: stating the effect of an improvement or anomaly rather than merely identifying it.

What does the mark scheme accept for method improvements?+

The improvement plus what it improves. Suggesting more repeats earns nothing on its own; saying that repeats allow an anomalous result to be identified and a mean calculated earns the mark. The same applies to anomalies: identifying one is worth little, while explaining what it does to the conclusion is worth the mark. That single distinction accounts for a large share of practical paper losses, and it is correctable within two or three sessions because the phrasing is formulaic.

Should we tutor all three sciences in Year 11?+

Almost never. Three tutored hours a week plus the between-session work for each is more than a Year 11 student carrying nine or ten subjects, the KHDA-mandated Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies lessons, a sport and an outbound school run can absorb. The result is three half-used engagements. Read the marked papers from all three subjects first: a shared cause such as explanation wording or arithmetic is fixable in one engagement that lifts all three, and sequencing beats parallelising.

Does a double award limit what my child can study post-16?+

It can, and it is worth checking early rather than at the point of selection. Some post-16 science courses prefer or require the separate sciences for progression to A Level or Higher Level study in that subject, and schools set their own entry requirements. If your child has a particular science in view, ask their school for its stated requirement in writing while there is still time to adjust the entry route. After the entry deadline the route is fixed regardless of how the year goes.

Can an online tutor cover practical science properly?+

For everything the paper assesses, yes, because in both international specifications practical skills are examined in writing rather than through laboratory assessment. Variable identification, apparatus reading, method criticism, results tables, graph plotting and anomaly comments all work over a screen using the boards' own past questions. Laboratory handling remains the school's responsibility and no online tutor should claim to replace it. The useful point is that the written paper is what the grade actually depends on.

Our son changed school mid-year and some science topics are missing. How much work is that?+

Usually a half-term of targeted work rather than a programme. Schools teach the same specification in different orders, so a mid-year arrival typically has two or three genuinely unmet topics and two or three covered twice, which is a jagged profile rather than a deficit. The diagnosis is to work through mixed past questions and record which ones he cannot start at all. In The Valley this is common, because families move in from across Dubai and often change board as well as school.

How much should we budget for IGCSE science tutoring?+

Published rates put qualified subject tutors working online at AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with Unitors advertising IGCSE from AED 150, and Bestimate's monthly estimate for one weekly hour at AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market. Budget online tutoring runs AED 33 to AED 65 and in-home visits AED 180 to AED 500 once travel is included. The more important figure is quantity: one hour chosen by diagnosis beats three chosen by subject, at a third of the monthly cost. Those figures were read in October 2026.

Will a science tutor come to our house in The Valley?+

No. IB Gram runs no home visits anywhere in the UAE, and nobody will arrive at an address in this community. Lessons are one-to-one and live over video, with diagrams, calculations and graph work on a shared whiteboard and questions on screen. Home tutoring is a service we operate in India only. For the science practical papers, which are written rather than laboratory-based in both international specifications, the online format loses nothing at all.

How should the week be structured with three sciences and a long commute?+

Short work on a weekday and long work at the weekend. Terminology testing and arithmetic drills benefit from frequency rather than length, so they suit a weekday evening slot plus daily between-session sets. The practical skills paper, whole papers and graph work need uninterrupted attention, which in this community genuinely exists only on Saturday or Sunday. One weekday slot and one weekend block is the pattern that survives all three terms of Year 11 here.

Which science is hardest at IGCSE?+

The question is less useful than it sounds, because the three fail differently rather than ranking cleanly. Biology has the most content and punishes imprecise wording. Chemistry is the most procedural and punishes approximate arithmetic. Physics has the most mathematics embedded in it and punishes slow algebra. Which one a particular student finds hardest depends on whether their weakness is vocabulary precision, calculation discipline or manipulation speed, and that is readable from a marked paper rather than from a general ranking.

Why do you want marked papers before the first session?+

Because science losses are diagnosable from the page and not from a description. Looking at marked work shows whether a biology loss is wording, a chemistry loss is rounding or units, and a physics loss is rearranging or prefixes, and those need different sessions with sometimes different tutors. A parent's report that science is a problem is honest and not actionable; three lost wording marks in one biology answer is actionable immediately, and it usually saves a month of generalised hours.

Three codes and three marked papers

Send the syllabus codes for all three sciences and marked work from each, not only the subject that feels worst. The pattern across the three is what shows whether this is one cause wearing three subject labels — arithmetic, explanation wording, terminology precision — or three genuinely separate problems, and that decides whether you need one tutored hour a week or two. Next is a free trial lesson on the subject that is actually drifting, with the tutor who would continue, then a written plan naming subjects and causes with a weekday and weekend split. Lessons run one-to-one over live video into The Valley, with no UAE home visits.
