IB Physics Tutor in The Valley

An IB physics tutor in The Valley is worth most when the plan follows the calendar, because a fifth of the physics grade is decided long before the examinations. This page sets out the two Diploma years in order: when the scientific investigation has to be scoped, when the data has to exist, when the mock block lands, and what the final eight weeks can realistically change. Lessons are one-to-one and live over video, with working and graphs on a shared whiteboard.

  • The investigation treated as a deadline, because it is 20% of the grade
  • Higher and Standard Level, with the five syllabus themes named in notes
  • An honest statement of what is still influenceable from where you start

IB & IGCSE in The Valley

A fifth of the grade is settled before anyone sits a paper

The most useful thing a parent can know about Diploma physics is that the scientific investigation is 20% of the final grade at both Higher and Standard Level, and that it is submitted to a school deadline months before the examinations. That single fact reorders everything about when physics tutoring is worth buying. A family who engages a tutor in the second term of the second Diploma year is too late to influence a fifth of the result, however good the tutor is.

So this page is organised around time. It sets out what each stage of the two Diploma years requires: when a research question has to be scoped, when the data has to actually exist, when the draft is due, where the mock block sits, and what the final eight weeks can and cannot deliver. It also covers the level decision, which has its own deadline, and the mathematics pairing that decides whether a Higher Level physics student will cope with the problem sets.

The Valley adds a practical constraint. This is a newer community on the road to Al Ain with no school inside its own boundary at the time of writing, so students here travel outward in two directions and attend several different schools. Those schools teach the five syllabus themes in different orders and set their own investigation deadlines, which means neighbours are frequently at different points in the same course and a family has to work from its own school's calendar.

The course itself is organised into five themes, running from space, time and motion, through the particulate nature of matter, wave behaviour and fields, to nuclear and quantum physics, with Higher Level extending several of them substantially. Assessment is two written papers, one including a data-based section, plus the internal investigation. Syllabus structures are revised, so confirm the current arrangement with your child's subject teacher rather than taking it from any website, including this one.

Delivery is stated plainly rather than implied: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, and nobody will arrive at an address in The Valley. Lessons are one-to-one and live over video, with a shared whiteboard for working, diagrams and graph sketches, and past-paper questions on screen. Household visits exist in our India operation only. For physics the format loses very little, because what a tutor needs to see is the line of working where the student stopped being sure. The format also removes the two car journeys either side of a visit, which in a household where the school run has already taken an hour from the day is the difference between a session a student can use and one they merely attend.

  • Delivery is live one-to-one video with a shared whiteboard; no UAE home visits
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Four stages, each with a different job and a different deadline. The commonest expensive error in physics is buying the final-term version of the work when the investigation stage was the one that mattered.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years sciences

Four assessed criteria covering knowledge and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. The design and processing criteria are the direct ancestors of the Diploma investigation, and they are the ones capable students neglect in favour of content recall, which later costs them in the 20% component.

Valley students reach the Middle Years at several different schools, so the timing of criterion-marked tasks differs between neighbours. A student aiming at Higher Level physics should be watching the processing and evaluating criterion marks rather than the knowledge one, because that is where the skills the Diploma assesses at 20% are first built.

DP1Ages 16-17 · Year 12

The first Diploma year

Content begins across the themes and, critically, the investigation is scoped and often carried out. This is the year in which everything is still available: content, the investigation, and the level decision itself. It is also the year most families do not engage a tutor, which is why so many physics problems arrive at the point when they are hardest to solve.

Schools in the two travel directions from The Valley set their investigation deadlines at different points in the year, and some front-load data collection into the first year while others do not. Ask your own school for the investigation timeline in the first term, because by the second term the scoping decision has usually already been made.

DP2Ages 17-18 · Year 13

The second Diploma year

Remaining content, the investigation submission, the mock block, then study leave and the examinations. In this year almost all available improvement is in the written papers: explanation technique, uncertainty treatment, the data-based section and pacing. The investigation, once submitted, is banked and outside what any tutor can affect.

For Valley students the commute makes the second year harder to schedule than the first. One protected weekday evening plus a weekend block is the structure that survives, and the weekend block is where the data-based paper section and whole-paper rehearsal belong because both need uninterrupted time.

BRIDGEAges 15-17 · The transition

Into Diploma physics from IGCSE or MYP

Two things change at once: the mathematics becomes continuous rather than arithmetical, and explanations must name mechanisms instead of describing outcomes. A student who scored highly at IGCSE by learning standard answers finds the first Diploma term genuinely hard, which is a method problem rather than a loss of ability and resolves within a term once named.

Because families move into The Valley from across Dubai and from abroad, a student may begin the first Diploma year from a different science sequence entirely, with two or three unmet topics. A short diagnostic in the first term is far cheaper than remediation in the examination year, and it also establishes whether the mathematics pairing will hold.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The content map by theme, with the specific place marks go in each. An enquiry naming a theme and a question type produces a far better first session than one describing general difficulty with physics.

Space, time and motion

HL and SL

Kinematics, forces, momentum, work and energy, with Higher Level extending the treatment. Marks go missing on sign conventions in momentum questions and on energy arguments that never state which system is being considered, so the examiner cannot follow the reasoning.

The particulate nature of matter

HL and SL

Thermal physics, the gas laws and the kinetic model. The recurring failure is conflating temperature and internal energy in explanations, and using the ideal gas relationship without checking which quantities the question holds constant.

Wave behaviour

HL and SL

Oscillations, wave models, superposition and standing waves, with further interference and diffraction work at Higher Level. Diagrams that are approximately right earn nothing: a standing wave with the wrong number of nodes loses the mark even alongside a correct explanation.

Fields

HL and SL

Gravitational, electric and magnetic fields, circuits and electromagnetic induction, with substantial Higher Level extension. Circuit questions cost Standard Level students the most, usually because a potential divider is treated as a series of independent components.

Nuclear and quantum physics

HL and SL

Radioactivity, nuclear reactions and quantum ideas including the photoelectric effect, extended considerably at Higher Level. Explanation questions reward precise language about photons and energy levels and lose marks for descriptions that would suit a wave model equally well.

The scientific investigation

HL and SL

Twenty per cent of the grade, designed and written by the student against published criteria covering research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The usual cause of a weak mark is a research question too broad to be answered by the data a student can realistically collect.

The data-based paper section

HL and SL

Graph work, gradients and intercepts with their physical meaning, uncertainty bars, and judging whether a proposed relationship is supported. It cannot be revised by rereading notes, which is exactly why it is the part of the paper most often left unrehearsed.

Uncertainty and error treatment

HL and SL

Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, propagation through calculations, and significant figures that reflect measurement precision. It is examined throughout rather than as a topic, which is why students never revise it and why it leaks marks on every paper.

The mathematics inside physics

HL and SL

Rearranging before substituting, powers of ten, trigonometry in resolving vectors, logarithms where required, and gradients from curved graphs. A notable share of lost physics marks are mathematical, which is diagnosable from marked work rather than a matter of opinion.

Mathematics and chemistry alongside physics

HL and SL

Most physics students take at least one of these, and the overlap in uncertainty treatment and data handling is direct. Tutoring two sciences in the same term is usually a mistake in a commuting household, because the between-session work for both will not be completed.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes, chosen by where in the two years a family is starting. The stage determines the work far more than the level does.

First-year investigation scoping

A short engagement in the first Diploma year, timed before the investigation question is fixed. The work is testing whether a research question can be answered by data the student can realistically collect, and establishing uncertainty treatment on the student's own measurements. It protects a fifth of the grade and is the cheapest physics intervention available.

  • Research question feasibility tested before any data is collected
  • Uncertainty and processing taught using the student's own measurements
  • Criterion-by-criterion review against the published criteria
  • No design chosen, no data supplied, no text written by the tutor

Theme teaching through the year

One protected weekday evening slot working through whichever themes the school is teaching, with the syllabus theme named in each session note. Used where there are genuine content gaps, and sequenced against the school's own order rather than a standard one, because schools in this community teach the themes in different sequences.

  • Sequenced against the school's actual theme order
  • Explanation questions practised against the command term
  • Unfamiliar questions used to confirm understanding transferred
  • Held after the school run, in Gulf Standard Time

An eight-week paper block at the weekend

Built backwards from the mock block or the examinations, using whole paper sections under timing with the data-based section included every week. It belongs at the weekend in this community, because uncertainty and graph work need uninterrupted attention that a weekday evening after a long run does not provide.

  • Paper sections under timing, then dissected against the mark scheme
  • The data-based section practised on unfamiliar data every session
  • Uncertainty, significant figures and pacing enforced throughout
  • Ends with the series, with no rolling commitment

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in The Valley

01

The two Diploma years for physics, in order

Physics has a distinctive shape among Diploma subjects because one component carries 20% and is finished long before the rest. Everything else follows from that. The first year is where the investigation is scoped and usually carried out, where the level decision is still open, and where content coverage begins across the themes. The second year is remaining content, the submission, the mock block, then papers. Those are different years requiring different work, and conflating them is how money gets spent badly.

The deadline sequence is set by the school rather than by the IB, which matters practically in this community. Schools in the two travel directions from The Valley set their investigation timelines at different points, some front-loading data collection into the first year and others leaving it later. A family here cannot infer the schedule from a neighbour; it has to ask its own school, ideally in the first term when the information is still actionable.

The table below is the order of events with what should already be done at each point. It is deliberately written in stages rather than months, because dates differ by school and the IB revises its own arrangements. What does not change is the logic: scope before collecting, collect before analysing, analyse before writing, and finish writing before the mock block rather than during it. Families who follow that order rarely need an emergency engagement later, and the ones who do not usually arrive asking for help with a component that has already closed.

02

The investigation, stage by stage, and what a tutor may do at each

Because this component is a fifth of the grade and the commonest source of avoidable loss, it is worth setting out properly. It is marked against published criteria covering research design, data collection and processing, analysis and conclusion, and evaluation. The dominant cause of a weak mark is scope: a question that cannot be answered by the data a school laboratory and a sixteen-year-old can realistically produce will generate thin analysis however sound the underlying physics.

That makes the earliest stage the most valuable. Testing a research question before any data is collected costs one or two sessions and determines most of the eventual mark, because every later criterion depends on having usable data. Students who get this stage right frequently need very little help afterwards. Students who get it wrong spend the following months processing data that cannot support a conclusion, and no amount of writing rescues that.

The boundary on tutoring is strict and we state it at each stage rather than in general. A tutor may teach the underlying physics, explain what each criterion rewards, question whether a method is reproducible, press on whether a conclusion follows from the results, teach uncertainty treatment using the student's own measurements, and comment on writing the student produced. A tutor may not design the investigation, collect or supply data, write or rewrite any part of the report, or provide a model to adapt. The table sets that boundary out stage by stage, so a parent can see exactly what legitimate help looks like at each point.

THE INVESTIGATION STAGE BY STAGE

03

The level decision, and when it actually closes

Higher Level physics extends several themes substantially, with fields and nuclear and quantum physics carrying most of the additional load, and the mathematical demand rises with them. A student taking Higher Level physics with Higher Level Analysis and Approaches has the tools the course assumes. A student pairing it with Standard Level mathematics is attempting something harder than the syllabus documents suggest, and it is workable but should be noticed in the first term rather than the fourth.

The practical point is that this is a calendar decision as much as an academic one. Schools set their own deadlines for changing a registered level, and once the second year begins a change usually means resetting the investigation as well as the accumulated content. The signal to watch for is specific: a student who follows the lesson perfectly and then completes the problem set slowly is hitting a mathematical ceiling, not a physics one, and three or four weeks of manipulation work usually resolves it.

For families still choosing, the other decision in this community is whether to take Diploma physics at all rather than A Level Physics at one of the schools in the other travel direction. Published university requirements differ and are revised, so read the admissions pages of the specific institutions on the shortlist, and check whether a minimum grade rather than just the subject is specified. Ask the school when its level-change deadline falls, because that is the date the decision actually has to respect.

04

The final eight weeks, and what they can change

By the last stretch the investigation is submitted and banked, so the realistic gains are entirely in the written papers. That is not a small thing: uncertainty treatment, the data-based section, explanation technique and pacing are all improvable quickly and all tend to be under-practised, because none of them can be revised by rereading notes. A student who adds those to existing content knowledge picks up marks across every question rather than in one topic.

The highest-yield order is specific. Uncertainty first, because it leaks marks on every paper and three or four focused sessions usually stop the leak. Then the data-based section, practised on unfamiliar data every week, because the skill is reading data the student has not seen. Then explanation questions against the command term, since the difference between describing an effect and naming its mechanism is the difference between half and full marks on a large share of the paper. Pacing last, with whole papers.

What eight weeks cannot do is cover a third of a syllabus never met, and a tutor implying otherwise is selling. The honest conversation happens before the booking rather than in week six. In a commuting community the other honest point is capacity: a student with a long school run and three Higher Levels cannot absorb two tutored hours a week plus the between-session work, so one weekend block used properly beats two weekday hours half-used. The order in the table below is the one that pays, and it is deliberately not the order most families would choose instinctively.

EIGHT WEEKS, IN THE ORDER THAT PAYS
WeeksFocusWhy it comes hereThe checkpoint
1-2Uncertainty, significant figures and propagationIt leaks marks on every paper and fixes fastQuoted precision matches the measurements

05

Theme order, school moves and the jagged profile

  • Schools teach the five themes in different orders
  • A jagged profile needs one or two themes, not a full programme
  • Diagnose from which questions a student cannot start at all
  • After a school move, establish the investigation stage first

In a community where families arrive from across Dubai and from abroad, and where children attend several different schools, the order in which physics themes are taught matters more than it would elsewhere. One school covers fields in the first year and nuclear physics in the second; another does the reverse. A student moving between them is not behind; they arrive with a jagged profile, strong in most themes and missing one or two entirely.

The remedy for a jagged profile is completely different from the remedy for being behind, and families often buy the wrong one. Being behind needs a sustained programme; a jagged profile needs one or two themes taught and the rest left alone, which is a fraction of the work. The diagnosis is straightforward: work through a mixed past paper and record which questions the student cannot start, as distinct from the ones they start and then slip in.

There is a second effect worth knowing about. A student who changes school mid-Diploma may also arrive with an investigation at a different stage from their new cohort, because schools time it differently. That is the single most urgent thing to establish after a move, ahead of any content work, because the component carries 20% and the new school's deadline may be considerably closer than the old school's would have been. Asking that question in the first week after a move costs nothing and occasionally saves a fifth of a grade.

06

What physics support costs at each stage

Price the stages against what is actually at stake, which in Diploma physics is the fifth of the grade sitting inside the scientific investigation. Published Dubai figures put a qualified subject tutor working online at AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with one agency advertising IB from AED 200: two scoping sessions at that band is a sum most households in The Valley would spend on a single school trip, and it is spent protecting 20% of the final grade. Budget online tutoring runs AED 33 to AED 65 an hour, a real band for drilling definitions and a poor one for a research question nobody has approved yet. Above it sit the IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and one premium provider advertising AED 650. In-home visits run AED 180 to AED 500 once travel is included, and from a community this far out along the Dubai-Al Ain Road the travel is a long way from nothing. Bestimate's monthly estimate for one weekly hour is AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market, which is the figure to set against a school submission deadline rather than against an examination date.

For physics the stage matters more than the rate. Two sessions scoping an investigation in the first year protect a fifth of the grade for a fraction of a term's cost, which is the best-value purchase available in the subject and the one families most often skip. A theme-teaching term costs a full monthly figure and closes content gaps. An eight-week paper block in the second year costs a similar amount and buys technique rather than content.

The arithmetic to avoid is three sciences at once. A student taking physics, chemistry and biology has three investigations and three sets of papers, and three tutored hours a week at the mid-market rate is a monthly figure most households did not intend and more between-session work than a Diploma student with a long commute can complete. Sequencing by deadline order works better and costs a third as much in any given month. All figures were read in October 2026.

Honesty, materials and the claims we do not make

  • No investigation designed, no data supplied or adjusted, no report text written
  • Past papers, mark schemes and data booklets referenced, never distributed
  • No examiner claims without current, evidenced examiner status
  • No regulator or IB approval, accreditation or partnership claimed

The academic honesty line in physics matters because the investigation involves data and data can be fabricated. A tutor may teach, explain criteria, question method and reasoning, teach uncertainty treatment on the student's own measurements, and comment on the student's own writing. A tutor may not design investigations, supply or adjust data, write or redraft reports, or provide specimens to adapt. One operation in this market sells completed internal assessments at AED 3,750; buying one is misconduct under IB rules and the candidate carries the consequence.

On materials, IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes, data booklets and grade-boundary tables are the IB's copyright. We reference and cite them and work from what the school legitimately holds, with questions shown on screen during sessions. A service advertising an unlimited paper bank invites a fair question about provenance. We also do not describe tutors as IB examiners unless current examiner status can be evidenced, a claim made frequently in this market and rarely supported.

On regulators, the position is narrow and deliberate. Dubai private schools are overseen by KHDA, which u.ae describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate, with ADEK in Abu Dhabi, SPEA in Sharjah, the Department of Knowledge in Ras Al Khaimah and the federal Ministry of Education in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. IB Gram holds no permit, approval or partnership from any of them or from the IB, and no UAE office. An individual tutoring privately in the UAE needs a MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years.

08

Scheduling physics around a long school run

  • Uncertainty and manipulation work degrade sharply with fatigue
  • Theme teaching suits a weekday hour; papers and data work need a block
  • Monday to Friday working week with a half-day Friday in the UAE
  • Ramadan sessions move after Iftar with the same tutor retained

Physics punishes fatigue more than most subjects, because a tired student makes uncertainty and manipulation errors they would not otherwise make, and then those errors are reviewed as if they were real. With no school inside this community, a secondary student is realistically home around a quarter past five, and the value of an hour falls noticeably after seven in the evening. Session timing is therefore a planning variable rather than an administrative detail.

The work splits by its timing needs. Explanation practice and theme teaching work in a weekday hour. Uncertainty work, the data-based section, investigation writing and whole papers all need uninterrupted attention, which in this community genuinely exists only at the weekend. A student doing one weekday evening slot and one weekend block is running a better programme than one attempting two tired weekday hours and completing the work for neither.

The UAE calendar shapes the rest. The working week runs Monday to Friday with a half-day Friday, leaving Saturday and Sunday as the only full days. During Ramadan school hours shorten and the useful window moves after Iftar, where a physics session is frequently better than any afternoon slot in that month. Slots are held in Gulf Standard Time, move after Iftar with the same tutor retained, and can pause during a school's own examination fortnight rather than adding sessions that produce fatigue. We also keep the same tutor across a term rather than rotating students to fill a diary, because knowing whether a particular student's errors are mathematical or conceptual takes weeks to rebuild with somebody new.

Where we tutor

The Valley and the schools its physics students attend

The Valley lies along the Dubai to Al Ain road with no school inside its boundary at the time of writing. Each entry notes what changes practically for a physics session, which is mostly about when a student can still think clearly.

The Valley

A newer community with a town centre, sports village and parks and no school inside it. Outbound runs in two directions put the first realistic physics session at about 5.30pm, and uncertainty work is noticeably worse after seven in the evening.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

One of two main school-run directions and a long late-afternoon journey. Students travelling this way frequently arrive home later than the published school day implies, which pushes graph and uncertainty work to the weekend.

Nad Al Sheba and Meydan

The other main direction, with schools offering both the Diploma and A Levels. Physics demand from this side includes students comparing the two routes rather than only choosing a level within one.

Arabian Ranches and Mira

Across the Dubailand corridor with established provision. Requests from Valley families travelling this way concentrate on the transition into the first Diploma year, where the mathematics is usually the obstacle rather than the physics.

Town Square

Along the corridor with its own school provision, which gives families there a shorter day and an earlier usable session time. The contrast shows precisely what the commute costs a Valley student in alert hours.

Mudon and Remraam

Communities off Al Qudra Road with outbound runs of their own. Supply of Higher Level physics specialists is thin across all of them, which is the same conclusion this page reaches about every neighbourhood in the corridor.

Damac Hills 2 and the southern communities

Newer and further out, reliant on long journeys in both directions. Families relocating into The Valley from here usually change school as well, which makes a theme-order diagnostic worth doing in the first term.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in The Valley

The Silicon Oasis, Academic City and Nad Al Sheba direction

One of the two directions Valley students travel in, with both IB and British-curriculum provision close together. Schools here teach the five physics themes in different orders and set their own investigation deadlines, so two students in the same street can be months apart in the same course.

  • GEMS Modern Academy - Nad Al Sheba
  • Repton School Dubai
  • The Aquila School
  • GEMS FirstPoint School - The Villa
  • South View School

The Arabian Ranches, Mira and Dubailand direction

The other direction, including schools running the full IB continuum. The practical questions when a family compares them are whether Higher Level physics is offered, how large the cohort is, and whether it can be timetabled alongside Higher Level mathematics.

  • Jumeirah English Speaking School - Arabian Ranches
  • Fairgreen International School
  • GEMS Metropole School - Motor City
  • Dubai British School Jumeirah Park

Schools are named as context for the local education landscape only; IB Gram claims no affiliation with, partnership with or endorsement from any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Say where the investigation stands

Unstarted, question chosen, data collected or submitted. That answer determines the whole priority order, because the component is 20% of the grade and its deadline is set by the school rather than by the examination timetable, usually much earlier than families expect.

  2. 02

Send the level, the maths course and a marked paper

Higher or Standard Level, which mathematics course your child takes alongside it, and a photograph of recently marked work. Together those usually show whether the problem is physics or the mathematics inside it, which decides which tutor we approach.

  3. 03

Tell us the school's theme order and this term's topic

Schools in this community teach the five themes in different sequences, so a tutor running a standard order makes a student hold two courses at once. Knowing what is being taught this week keeps the sessions reinforcing rather than duplicating.

  4. 04

A free trial on the weakest theme

Run by the tutor who would continue, using an unfamiliar question in the theme the student currently fails. It ends with the tutor stating whether the loss is conceptual, mathematical, uncertainty-related or technique, and what they would address first.

  5. 05

A written plan with a weekday and weekend split

You receive a plan naming themes and components, the between-session work, and the date it counts back from, with theme teaching on a weekday and papers or investigation work at the weekend. Named components mean the plan can be checked.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The 20% component treated as a deadline

The investigation is a fifth of the grade and is submitted to a school deadline months before the examinations. We say so first, because families who learn it in the second year have already lost the chance to influence it.

Scoping sold as the cheapest purchase

Two sessions testing whether a research question can be answered by data the student can collect costs a fraction of a term and determines most of the eventual mark. It is the best value in the subject and the most frequently skipped.

The physics and the maths separated first

A large share of lost physics marks are mathematical, and the two problems need different work. We diagnose which from marked work before the first session, because treating an algebra problem as a physics problem wastes a term.

Theme order taken from your school

Schools in this community teach the five themes in different sequences, so sessions follow your child's actual order. After a school move we check the theme profile and the investigation stage before any content work.

A structure built for the commute

Theme teaching on a weekday evening, uncertainty and paper work at the weekend. Physics accuracy falls off after seven, so a plan that ignores the school run teaches a tired student to make errors and then reviews them.

Claims that can be checked

Every AED figure names its publisher and the month read, and regulator descriptions are quoted from u.ae. We publish no ratings or improvement statistics and describe no tutor as an IB examiner without evidenced current status.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in The Valley: your questions answered

How much of the physics grade is settled before the examinations?+

Twenty per cent, through the scientific investigation, at both Higher and Standard Level. It is designed, carried out and written by the student and marked against published criteria covering research design, data collection and processing, analysis and conclusion, and evaluation. Critically it is submitted to a school deadline months before the papers, so a family engaging a tutor in the second Diploma year has already lost the chance to influence a fifth of the result. That weighting is the main argument for starting in the first year.

When should the investigation research question be decided?+

Earlier than most students do it, and the first useful session is about scope rather than content. A question that cannot be answered by the data a school laboratory and a sixteen-year-old can realistically produce will generate thin analysis however sound the physics behind it, and every later criterion depends on having usable data. Testing feasibility costs one or two sessions and determines most of the eventual mark. Students who get this stage right frequently need very little help afterwards.

Our school sets the investigation deadline differently from our neighbours'. Why?+

Because schools time it themselves, and in The Valley children attend several different schools in two travel directions. Some front-load data collection into the first Diploma year while others leave it considerably later. That means a neighbour's timeline carries no information about your own child's, and it is worth asking your school for the investigation schedule in the first term rather than discovering it when a draft is suddenly due. After a school move it is the first thing to establish.

My daughter understands the lessons but takes ages over the problem sets. What is that?+

Almost always a mathematical ceiling rather than a physics one, and it is the signal to watch for in Higher Level physics taken with Standard Level mathematics. The Higher Level extensions in fields and in nuclear and quantum physics assume manipulation fluency that Standard Level mathematics does not drill to the same depth. Three or four weeks of manipulation work in physics contexts usually resolves it. Noticed in the first term it is a short block; noticed in the fourth it is a much larger repair.

What should the last eight weeks before the papers contain?+

Uncertainty first, because it leaks marks on every paper and three or four sessions usually stop the leak. Then the data-based section, practised on unfamiliar data every week, because the skill is reading data the student has not seen. Then explanation questions against the command term, since naming a mechanism rather than describing an effect is the difference between half and full marks on a large share of the paper. Pacing last, with whole papers under timing.

Can an online tutor help with a laboratory investigation?+

With everything except the laboratory work, which belongs to the school. A tutor can test whether the research question is answerable with data your child can realistically collect, teach uncertainty recording before collection begins, teach processing and graph work on the student's own measurements, explain what each criterion rewards, and question whether a conclusion follows. A tutor must not design the investigation, supply or adjust data, or write any part of the report. The feasibility conversation before collection is where most of the value sits.

We changed school mid-Diploma and some physics themes are missing. How bad is that?+

Usually less bad than it looks, because it is a jagged profile rather than a deficit. Schools teach the five themes in different orders, so a student moving between them typically has one or two themes entirely unmet and the rest intact. The diagnosis is to work through a mixed past paper and record which questions the student cannot start at all, as distinct from those they start and then slip in. One or two themes taught is a fraction of the work a full catch-up programme would be.

Is it worth starting physics tutoring in the second Diploma year?+

Yes for the papers and no for the investigation, and the honest version of that distinction should be stated before any booking. In the second year the achievable gains are uncertainty treatment, the data-based section, explanation technique and pacing, all of which are real and all of which are usually under-practised. What is gone is any influence over the 20% component once it is submitted. A tutor promising to change that is selling, and families deserve to hear the limit first.

Should we tutor physics and chemistry in the same term?+

Usually not in a household with a long school run. A student taking three sciences has three investigations and three sets of papers, and three tutored hours a week plus the between-session work for each is more than the week holds once the commute is counted. The better structure is sequencing by deadline: address whichever subject's investigation falls first or whose marks are furthest from target, then rotate. One subject properly used beats three partially used at a third of the monthly cost.

Why does uncertainty cost so many marks when nobody teaches it as a topic?+

That is exactly why. Uncertainty is assessed throughout — in the data-based paper section, inside ordinary calculations through significant figures, and twice over in the investigation's processing and evaluation criteria — but it is not a theme, so it never appears as a heading in a revision guide and students skip it. The failures are consistent: absolute and percentage uncertainty confused, no propagation through multi-step calculations, and uncertainty bars drawn on a graph but never used to judge whether a relationship is supported.

How should a physics week be structured around the commute?+

Theme teaching and explanation practice work in a weekday evening hour after the school run. Uncertainty work, the data-based section, investigation writing and whole papers all need uninterrupted attention, which in a community with no school inside it genuinely exists only at the weekend. One weekday slot plus one weekend block is the pattern that lasts a full term here, and it produces more than two tired weekday hours with the between-session work left undone for both.

What does physics tutoring cost at each stage?+

Published rates put qualified subject tutors working online at AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with one agency advertising IB from AED 200 and specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 or more. Two sessions scoping the investigation is a fraction of a term's cost and protects a fifth of the grade. A theme-teaching term or an eight-week paper block each run to roughly a monthly figure of AED 600 to AED 1,200 on Bestimate's mid-market estimate. Those figures were read in October 2026.

Do you work from our school's data booklet and past papers?+

We work from what your child's school legitimately holds, with questions shown on screen during sessions, and we reference the official sources rather than distributing anything. IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes, data booklets and grade-boundary tables are the IB's copyright. A service advertising an unlimited paper bank raises a fair question about provenance and occasionally about unreleased material. The school's own holdings are also what your child will be marked against, which makes them the better source in practice.

How will we know whether the physics sessions are working?+

Each session note records which error class appeared — conceptual, mathematical, uncertainty-related or technique — rather than listing topics covered. For uncertainty and technique causes the change usually appears in the next marked paper, within three or four weeks. Conceptual gaps take one to three weeks per theme. Investigation work is judged against criteria rather than marks until the school assesses it, so progress there shows as a tighter research question and a draft that survives criterion review.

Will a physics tutor come to our house in The Valley?+

No. IB Gram runs no home visits anywhere in the UAE, and nobody will arrive at an address in this community. Lessons are one-to-one and live over video, with a shared whiteboard for working, diagrams and graph sketches, and questions on screen. Home tutoring is a service we operate in India only. For physics the format loses very little, because what a tutor needs to see is the line of working where the student stopped being sure, and that is visible either way.

Start with where the investigation stands

That single answer — unstarted, question chosen, data collected or submitted — decides what the first month of physics sessions should contain, because a fifth of the grade is attached to a school deadline rather than to the examination timetable. Add the level, the mathematics course taken alongside it, this term's theme and a photograph of marked work, and the diagnosis is largely complete. Next is a free trial lesson on an unfamiliar question in the weakest theme, with the tutor who would continue, then a written plan split between a weekday slot and a weekend block. Lessons run one-to-one over live video into The Valley, with no UAE home visits.
