IGCSE Tutor near me in The Valley

An IGCSE tutor near me in The Valley is a search for proximity, but the thing that moves a grade is specificity: which specification your child sits, which paper is losing the marks, and which command word they keep answering past. This page sets out what each subject's papers assess, what the tier ceilings actually are, and the command words that decide bands. Lessons are one-to-one and live over video, with past-paper questions on screen and working written out as it happens.

  • Matched to a syllabus code and tier rather than to a subject name
  • Command words drilled against the mark scheme's own wording
  • Tier ceilings explained before an entry decision rather than after it

IB & IGCSE in The Valley

What a proximity search leaves out of an IGCSE enquiry

A list of tutors sorted by distance tells you who is nearby and nothing about whether a grade will move. For IGCSE the variables that matter are narrow and checkable: the syllabus code your child is entered for, the tier, which paper the marks are disappearing on, and which command words they keep answering past. A tutor who can name those four things in the first conversation is worth more than one who lives ten minutes away and cannot.

The Valley makes the point sharply. This is a newer community on the road to Al Ain with no school inside its own boundary at the time of writing, so students here travel outward in two directions and attend several different schools. There is no single local cohort and no school-gate network passing on recommendations about who teaches Extended-tier chemistry well. A proximity search in this neighbourhood returns a short list, and a short list is not a shortlist.

Start with the code, because everything else depends on it. Cambridge International Mathematics is 0580 with Core and Extended tiers; the Pearson Edexcel equivalent is 4MA1 with Foundation and Higher tiers. The sciences are 0610, 0620 and 0625 against 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1. These are separate qualifications whose past papers are not interchangeable, and in a community where neighbours attend different schools you cannot infer the board from a conversation at the park.

Then work out which paper and which skill. IGCSE marks are unusually diagnosable because mark schemes are explicit about what earns each mark: method marks on multi-step calculations, reason marks on angle questions, specific terminology in biology explanations. A student losing eight marks a paper to habit rather than ignorance is the commonest profile we see, and it is also the fastest to improve, which is why a marked paper is worth more to us than any description.

Delivery is stated plainly rather than implied: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, and nobody will arrive at an address in The Valley. Lessons are one-to-one and live over video, with questions shared on screen, a whiteboard where working appears as it is written, and an optional recording. Home visits exist in our India operation only. In a community with no local pool, that model is what makes a specification-matched tutor available at all. It also removes the two car journeys either side of a visit, which is what allows a session to start while a student who has already travelled twice that day can still concentrate on a multi-step calculation. The remainder of this page is the subject detail that should drive the choice, with the local map treated as a scheduling constraint rather than a selection criterion.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three stages, and in a community whose children attend several schools the stage your own child is at matters more than what the neighbourhood is doing.

PREAges 13-14 · Year 9

Year 9, before the specification begins

The specification assumes fluency in operations it does not examine directly: negatives and fractions, rearranging, units and prefixes, and reading a question closely enough to notice its instruction. A student who has to think about those cannot think about the problem containing them, and all of them are cheap to fix at this stage.

The Valley fills largely with families moving within Dubai or into the emirate, so mid-phase school changes are routine here. A child joining a British-curriculum school in Year 9 usually has two or three specific unmet topics rather than a general weakness, and a diagnostic before the course starts is the cheapest intervention available to a family in this community.

Y10Ages 14-15 · Year 10

Year 10, meeting the specification

Content is met for the first time and the habits that decide the final grade form here: writing method out, stating reasons, checking a result against the context described. Students who get through Year 10 on recall rather than understanding tend to stall in the examination year, when questions stop resembling the exercises.

Tier decisions are informed by internal Year 10 examinations and have an entry deadline set by each school. Because Valley children attend several different schools, those dates differ between neighbours, so a family wanting to keep Extended or Higher tier open should ask its own school rather than assume a shared timetable.

Y11Ages 15-16 · Year 11

Year 11, converting knowledge into marks

Almost all measurable improvement in this year comes from technique: command words, showing method, pacing against marks, and answering the question asked rather than the one revised for. A student who understands the material and loses marks to habit can move a grade in a term; a student who has not met the content cannot.

UAE candidates sit the June series, with November as the resit route; Cambridge's February and March series is offered to India only. For Valley students the practical constraint is the commute, which means one protected weekday evening plus a weekend block for whole papers is the structure that survives a full term.

POSTAges 16+

After the results

IGCSE grades act as thresholds for A Level or IB Higher Level study, set per school and often per subject rather than overall. The useful question is which single grade the intended route depends on, because one named grade in one named subject is a far cheaper target than lifting an entire profile by half a grade.

For UAE university plans, Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track requires five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic Education, plus one Advanced Level subject at grade E or two Advanced Subsidiary Level subjects. Verify current rules on moe.gov.ae.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What follows is the subject detail: the papers, what decides the grade and the specific place marks go. An enquiry naming a subject and a paper is worth three describing a general difficulty.

Mathematics

Cambridge 0580; Pearson 4MA1

Method marks sit on nearly every multi-step question, so an answer arriving alone scores nothing when it is wrong. Algebraic manipulation is the bottleneck more often than any topic, and the current Cambridge specification includes assessment without a calculator while Pearson permits one throughout.

Physics

Cambridge 0625; Pearson 4PH1

Circuits, moments and equilibrium cost higher-tier candidates the most. Many physics losses are mathematical rather than scientific: rearranging before substituting, prefixes, and reading a gradient from a graph that is not quite straight, which is diagnosable from marked work.

Chemistry

Cambridge 0620; Pearson 4CH1

Moles and reacting-mass calculations lead the losses, followed by qualitative analysis described imprecisely. Students who learn ionic equations as patterns rather than memorised recipes cope with unfamiliar questions considerably better than those who do not.

Biology

Cambridge 0610; Pearson 4BI1

Terminology decides the band. Osmosis answers lose marks for omitting concentration gradient, enzyme answers for saying killed rather than denatured, and genetics answers for incomplete notation. Volume rather than conceptual difficulty is what makes the subject hard.

English Language

Cambridge 0500 and 0990; Pearson 4EA1

Directed writing and the extended response carry most of the marks, and the common failure is strong writing in the wrong register for the stated audience and purpose. Reading questions need quotation plus comment; a quotation left to speak for itself earns nothing.

English as a Second Language

Cambridge 0510 and 0511

A separate qualification with its own papers including listening and speaking, not an easier version of English Language. An incorrect entry costs far more than a few marks. Accuracy outranks ambitious vocabulary, and the speaking component needs rehearsal rather than revision.

Business Studies and Economics

Cambridge 0450 and 0455; Pearson 4BS1 and 4ET1

Command words set the ceiling. An answer that explains where the question said evaluate caps itself whatever its accuracy, and numerical work on ratios and elasticity needs drilling separately from the written responses it sits beside.

Geography and History

Cambridge 0460 and 0470

Source-handling and case-study specificity decide the higher bands. Students lose marks describing a source rather than using it as evidence, and using generic examples where a named, dated case study was expected by the mark scheme.

Computer Science and ICT

Cambridge 0478 and 0417

Pseudocode and algorithm questions reward a consistent, legible convention more than clever code, and data representation answers need exact vocabulary. The ICT practical component is a skills examination that improves with repetition rather than with reading.

Arabic and the UAE mandatory subjects

First language and additional language

KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies in Dubai private schools whatever the licensed curriculum, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students. These grades appear beside IGCSE subjects and frequently slip for families who arrived mid-phase.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes for subject work, chosen by what a marked paper shows rather than by the subject on the report. Booking against a subject alone is how families pay for teaching a student did not need.

Paper-level repair

The commonest engagement. A recent marked paper names the specific topics and command words costing marks, and sessions address those and nothing else until the same question type stops failing. Unfamiliar questions on the same topic follow, because getting one question right is not command of a topic.

  • Diagnosis from the student's own marked work rather than a general test
  • Three or four named topics worked until the failure stops
  • Unfamiliar questions used to confirm the repair held
  • A short written note of what is now secure after each session

Command-word and mark-scheme drilling

For students who know the content and lose marks anyway. Sessions work question sets chosen by command word rather than by topic, then read the official mark scheme line by line against the student's own answer so the lost marks become visible rather than abstract.

  • Question sets grouped by command word, not by topic
  • Official mark schemes read against the student's own writing
  • Method and reason marks enforced on every relevant question
  • Pacing practised as time per mark in the final weeks

A weekend whole-paper block

Ninety minutes or two hours at the weekend for full papers under timing and review afterwards. In a community with a long school run this is where uninterrupted time genuinely exists, and whole-paper work needs it rather than a squeezed weekday hour.

  • Full papers under timing, then dissected question by question
  • Lost marks classified by reason rather than totalled
  • Covers the practical skills paper in the sciences
  • Sits alongside or instead of a weekday slot

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in The Valley

01

What each subject's papers actually assess

Parents are often told their child needs help with a subject, which is not actionable. What is actionable is knowing which paper carries which skill, because the subjects differ more than their shared grade scale suggests. A mathematics paper is a sequence of largely independent problems where method marks accumulate. An English Language paper is two or three extended tasks where register and purpose decide the band. A science paper carries explanation questions, calculations and a separate practical skills component.

That difference changes what a tutor should do. In mathematics the work is fluency and method discipline, and progress is visible within weeks. In English Language the work is reading the task for audience and purpose, then writing to it, which is a slower change but a large one. In the sciences the work splits three ways between terminology precision, calculation discipline and the practical paper, and a tutor who treats all three as one subject will spend the term on whichever they prefer.

The table below sets out, per subject, what decides the grade and the trap that recurs. It is worth reading alongside your child's own marked paper, because the combination of the two usually produces a specific plan in about ten minutes. Specifications are revised periodically, so confirm paper structures with the school rather than relying on any website, including this one. The principle holds even when a paper number changes: find out what the paper assesses, then work on that rather than on the subject in general.

02

Tier ceilings, and the decision that closes before the papers

Tiering is the part of IGCSE that surprises families most, because it is an entry decision rather than something adjustable in the examination hall. Cambridge splits many subjects into Core and Extended, with Core capping the achievable grade and Extended reaching the top bands while containing harder content. Pearson uses Foundation and Higher tiers in some subjects. The school decides the entry against the board's deadline, informed in most cases by internal Year 10 results.

The consequence is that a family wanting to keep the higher tier open has a deadline much earlier than the examination. By the time a parent is worried about a grade in the final terms, the ceiling may already be fixed. In The Valley this is worth asking about explicitly, because children here attend several different schools whose entry timetables differ, and a neighbour's reassurance about when decisions are made carries no information about your own child's school.

The honest advice is to have the conversation in Year 10 rather than Year 11, and to ask two questions: what tier is my child currently expected to be entered for, and what specifically would need to change for the higher tier to be realistic. Those are answerable questions with a timeline attached. The table below sets out what each tier implies so that the conversation starts from the same facts the school is working from rather than from a parent's impression of what a tier means.

TIERS, CEILINGS AND WHAT THEY IMPLY

03

The command words that decide bands

More IGCSE marks are lost to command words than to gaps in knowledge, and this is the cheapest thing on the whole page to fix. Mark schemes award a specific shape of response per command word. A student who describes when the question said explain has answered a different question, and the overlap earns nothing. The words are published by both boards, they are consistent across subjects, and they can be learned properly in a handful of sessions rather than over a term.

The students most vulnerable are the articulate ones. Fluency disguises the problem: a well-written paragraph that states rather than gives a reason reads convincingly and scores in the middle band, so neither the student nor the parent can see why the mark is what it is. The correction is mechanical rather than literary. Underline the command word, write the mark allocation beside it, and produce exactly the structure that word requires before writing anything else.

The table below covers the words that cost the most marks in the subjects Valley families ask about, with the error that recurs in each. Both boards publish full definitions in their specifications and your child's teacher can provide them; we reference those documents rather than reproducing them, because they are the boards' copyright. The useful habit for a student is to keep the list beside them while working through past papers rather than reading it once and assuming it has been absorbed.

COMMAND WORDS AND THE ERRORS THAT RECUR
Command wordWhat the mark scheme wantsThe recurring errorTypical marks at stake
State or giveA fact or answer, no justificationWriting a paragraph where a line was required1 mark, plus time lost

04

The components that cannot be revised by reading

Some parts of an IGCSE cannot be prepared by rereading notes, and those are precisely the parts students neglect. The practical skills paper in the sciences is the clearest case: in both boards' international specifications it is assessed on a written paper rather than in a laboratory, and it asks for variable identification, apparatus reading, method criticism, results tables and graph work. There is nothing to highlight and no notes to reread, so it gets skipped by almost everybody.

The same applies to the speaking and listening components in Cambridge English as a Second Language, to ICT's practical skills examination, and to extended writing tasks in English Language, where the skill is matching register to a stated audience rather than recalling content. All of these improve through repetition against the official question types, and all of them are heavily patterned, which means a student who has worked twenty examples recognises almost everything the paper can ask.

The practical consequence is a planning one. If a family has a limited number of tutored hours, these components usually give the best return, because they are both under-practised and highly repetitive. A four to six session block on the science practical paper raises marks across all three sciences at once. The table below lists the components worth attacking this way and what each one actually requires. Reading it alongside your child's own timetable usually identifies one or two obvious candidates that nobody in the household has thought about all year.

05

Reading a marked paper properly

  • The distribution of losses matters more than the total score
  • Five categories: content, command word, method, arithmetic, timing
  • Each category has a different fix and a different timescale
  • A parent can do the classification before any tutor is involved

A marked paper is the most useful document a family has and it is usually read for the wrong information. The score at the top says very little; the distribution of the losses says almost everything. Four lost marks on method, three on command words and one on arithmetic is a plan for the next month. Sixty-one per cent is a feeling. The first thing any session here does is convert the former into the latter's replacement.

The classification we use has five categories: content not known, command word misread, method not shown, arithmetic slip, and ran out of time. Each has a different fix and a different timescale. Content needs teaching, topic by topic. Command words need two weeks of enforcement. Method needs two to four weeks of enforcement, because it is a habit rather than a misunderstanding. Arithmetic needs fluency drilling over four to eight weeks. Timing needs full papers under the clock.

Parents can do this themselves, and we would rather they did, because it makes the first conversation precise. Go through the marked paper with the student and write beside each lost mark which of those five categories it belongs to. The pattern that emerges is usually obvious and often surprising: students who describe themselves as bad at a subject are frequently losing most of their marks to two habits that have nothing to do with the subject at all, which is a considerably more cheerful diagnosis than the one they arrived with.

06

What subject tuition costs here, and what a diagnosis costs

The band a distance-sorted list never shows you is the one travel creates. In-home visits in Dubai are published at AED 180 to AED 500 once travel is included, and The Valley sits at the far end of most tutors' drive, so the upper half of that range is the realistic one here rather than the lower. Teaching live online removes the charge entirely: a qualified subject tutor working online is quoted at AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with Unitors advertising IGCSE from AED 150. Below that, budget online tutoring runs AED 33 to AED 65, Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to AED 65. Above it, specialists in IGCSE and A Level are quoted at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270. The gap between the cheapest online hour and the dearest home visit is better than fifteenfold, and not one dirham of it is explained by who happens to live closest to you.

For IGCSE subject work the qualified online tier is usually the right purchase, because the work is diagnosis and enforcement rather than rare expertise. The more useful framing for a family is the cost of finding out versus the cost of a term. Two or three diagnostic sessions at the mid-market rate is a small fraction of a term's weekly tutoring, and it answers the question most families spend a whole term guessing at: which subject, which paper, which habit.

Monthly packages advertised in this market include AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour home visits, and Bestimate's monthly estimates for one weekly hour run AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market. Every figure here belongs to the company or rate guide that published it and was read in October 2026. IB Gram publishes no hourly list on these pages and quotes after a free trial, for the specific subject, board and tier.

Coursework, materials and the boundaries that matter

  • Submitted work must be the student's own and is authenticated by the school
  • We do not write, redraft to completion, source or sell any assessed piece
  • Past papers and mark schemes are referenced, never hosted or distributed
  • Feedback given is recorded, so a school can see what support was provided

Where a subject carries assessed work completed outside the examination hall, the boundary has to be explicit. Submitted work must be the student's own and is authenticated by the school, and a submission that is not is a malpractice matter whose consequences fall on the candidate rather than on whoever was paid. One operation in this market sells completed internal assessments for a different qualification at AED 3,750, which establishes both that the trade exists and what it costs.

What a tutor may legitimately do is teach the content a task draws on, explain the assessment criteria, question whether a method is reproducible, point out a conclusion that outruns its evidence, and comment on writing the student produced. What a tutor may not do is write any part of a submission, redraft a paragraph into final form, select and carry out an investigation, or supply a model to be edited. Our test is whether a sentence in the final piece exists because a tutor wrote it.

Materials are the second boundary. Cambridge and Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are the boards' copyright. We reference them, cite the official sources, and work from material your child's school legitimately holds, with questions shown on screen during sessions. Any service advertising an unlimited paper bank invites a fair question about provenance, and the school's own holdings are in any case the papers your child will be marked against.

08

Regulators, permits and what we do not claim

Dubai private schools are overseen by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which u.ae describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. In 2024-25 that covered 227 private schools and 387,441 students across 17 curricula, with the UK curriculum at 37% of enrolment. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees would not rise for the following academic year under Dubai's second economic incentives package.

Two further facts are worth a parent's attention. KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies in Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students and combined classes prohibited; instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. And the emirate determines the regulator: ADEK in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, SPEA in Sharjah, the Department of Knowledge in Ras Al Khaimah, and the federal Ministry of Education in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah.

On our own position: IB Gram holds no KHDA Educational Services Permit, no ADEK or Ministry approval, no Cambridge or Pearson partnership, and no office, branch or centre in the UAE. An individual providing private tuition in the UAE needs a MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years; those tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so treat any specific amount quoted online with suspicion.

Where we tutor

Where Valley students go to school

The Valley sits along the Dubai to Al Ain road with no school inside its boundary at the time of writing. These are the directions its students travel and what each means for subject tuition.

The Valley

A newer community with a town centre and sports village but no school inside it. With no single local cohort, there is no school-gate network passing on subject-specific tutor recommendations, which is why a proximity search returns so little here.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

One of two main school-run directions and a long late-afternoon run. Students travelling this way are home later than the published school day suggests, which pushes subject sessions into the early evening.

Nad Al Sheba and Meydan

The other main direction, with several established schools entering a mix of Cambridge and Pearson specifications. That mix is why confirming your own child's code matters more here than in a single-board catchment.

Arabian Ranches and Mira

Across the Dubailand corridor with established British-curriculum provision. Demand from Valley families travelling this way concentrates in Extended and Higher tier mathematics and the separate sciences.

Town Square

Along the corridor with school provision of its own, which shortens the day materially for families there. The contrast isolates what the commute costs a Valley student in usable evening hours.

Mudon and Remraam

Communities off Al Qudra Road with their own outbound runs. Supply of higher-tier subject specialists is thin in all of these neighbourhoods, for the same structural reason as here.

Damac Hills 2 and the southern communities

Newer and further south, with long runs in both directions. Families moving between these and The Valley typically change school as well, which produces specific unmet topics rather than general weakness.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in The Valley

The Silicon Oasis, Academic City and Nad Al Sheba direction

One of the two directions Valley students travel in. Schools here enter a mix of Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel specifications, so two students in the same street can sit different papers in the same subject in the same June series.

The Arabian Ranches, Mira and Dubailand direction

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the code, the tier and a marked paper

Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel with the syllabus code, the tier if one applies, and a photograph of recently marked work. Those three things usually produce a specific plan in ten minutes, because IGCSE losses are visible on the page rather than inferred from a description.

  2. 02

Classify the losses before we speak

Go through the marked paper and write beside each lost mark whether it was content, command word, method, arithmetic or timing. It takes fifteen minutes and it is often surprising. It also makes the first conversation precise rather than exploratory.

  3. 03

A free trial lesson on the weakest paper

Run by the tutor who would continue, using a question type the student currently fails rather than one they can perform. It ends with the tutor naming the first two things they would address and roughly how long each should take. If the match is wrong, we propose someone else.

  4. 04

A written plan naming topics and command words

You receive a plan listing specific topics from the specification, the command words being drilled, the between-session tasks and the date it counts back from. Named items mean you can check whether sessions are doing what the plan said they would.

  5. 05

Weekly sessions with a classified error log

Each session note records which error classes appeared rather than which topics were covered. Over a month those classes either thin out or they do not, and if they do not we change the approach or the tutor rather than adding hours.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Specification and tier established first

Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 are different papers with non-transferable past papers, and in a community whose children attend several schools the code cannot be inferred from a neighbour. We confirm it before the first session.

Command words treated as the cheapest marks

More IGCSE marks are lost to command words than to ignorance, and the correction is mechanical. Question sets grouped by command word, with mark schemes read against the student's own writing, is where the fastest band movement sits.

Under-practised components prioritised

The science practical paper, ESL speaking, directed writing and ICT practicals cannot be revised by reading, so students skip them. They are also heavily patterned, which makes a short block on them the best return available.

Diagnosis sold separately from a term

Two or three sessions to find out which subject, paper and habit is costing marks is a small fraction of a term's cost, and it prevents a family spending a term guessing. We would rather sell the diagnosis than the guess.

A structure that survives the commute

One protected weekday evening plus a weekend block for whole papers is what lasts in a community with no school inside it. We plan around when your child is actually home rather than when it would be convenient.

No approval claims and no UAE premises

IB Gram holds no KHDA permit, no ADEK or Ministry approval, no Cambridge or Pearson partnership and no office in the UAE. Regulators are explained here to help you read your child's school, not to borrow their standing.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in The Valley: your questions answered

Does proximity matter at all when choosing an IGCSE tutor?+

Much less than the specification does, and in The Valley it barely matters at all. There is no school inside this community at the time of writing, so there is no local cohort and no school-gate network passing on subject-specific recommendations. A proximity search returns a short list here, and a short list is not a shortlist. What decides whether a grade moves is whether the tutor teaches your child's exact syllabus code and tier, which is why IB Gram matches on specification and delivers one-to-one online.

Which command words cost IGCSE students the most marks?+

Explain, suggest and evaluate, in roughly that order. Explain requires a reason or mechanism and students routinely describe the effect instead, earning the description marks and none of the explanation ones. Suggest requires an applied answer to an unfamiliar context, and students supply a recalled textbook answer that does not fit. Evaluate requires a judgement weighed against evidence, so a list of advantages and disadvantages without a conclusion caps the band. All three are correctable in a handful of sessions, which makes them the cheapest marks available.

How is a tier decided and can it be changed later?+

The school decides the entry against the board's deadline, usually informed by internal Year 10 results, and once entries are made it is not adjustable on the day. Cambridge Core caps the achievable grade while Extended reaches the top bands; Pearson uses Foundation and Higher tiers in some subjects. That means a family wanting to keep the higher tier open has a deadline well before the examination. Ask the examinations officer what tier your child is expected to be entered for and what would need to change.

Our daughter writes well but keeps scoring in the middle band. Why?+

Almost always command words rather than writing ability, and fluency is what hides it. A well-constructed paragraph that states a position without giving a reason reads convincingly and scores in the middle band, so neither student nor parent can see the cause. Mark schemes award a specific shape of response per command word. The correction is mechanical: underline the command word, write the mark allocation beside it, and produce exactly that structure. It is one of the fastest improvements available at this level.

What should we actually look at on a marked paper?+

The distribution of the losses rather than the score. Go through the paper and write beside each lost mark which of five categories it belongs to: content not known, command word misread, method not shown, arithmetic slip, or ran out of time. Four method marks and three command-word marks is a plan for the month; sixty-one per cent is a feeling. Parents can do this themselves in about fifteen minutes, and it frequently shows that a student who feels bad at a subject is losing marks to two habits.

Why is the science practical paper worth tutoring separately?+

Because it is examined on a written paper in both boards' international specifications, it is heavily patterned, and almost nobody practises it, since there is nothing to re-read. It asks for variable identification, apparatus reading, method criticism with stated effects, results tables with correct units, and graph work. The same question shapes recur across series, so a student who works twenty past questions recognises nearly everything it can ask. A four to six session block on it raises marks across all three sciences at once.

Is English as a Second Language easier than English Language?+

It is a different qualification rather than an easier one, with its own papers including listening and speaking components, and an incorrect entry costs far more than a few marks. Accuracy outranks ambitious vocabulary throughout, and the speaking component needs rehearsal rather than revision, which students rarely do because it cannot be practised silently. Confirm with the examinations officer which qualification your child is entered for, because the preparation differs substantially and the past papers are not interchangeable.

How many sessions does it take to fix unwritten method?+

Two to four weeks of enforcement rather than an explanation, because it is a habit and not a misunderstanding. Most students already understand the point when told; what changes behaviour is a tutor declining to assess an answer that arrives with no working above it, week after week, until writing method becomes automatic. Over a two-hour paper the difference is routinely worth several marks, and several marks is frequently a grade boundary, which makes this the cheapest single improvement in mathematics and physics.

What does a diagnosis cost compared with a term of tutoring?+

Two or three diagnostic sessions at the published mid-market online rate of AED 150 to AED 300 an hour is a small fraction of a term's weekly tutoring, and it answers the question most families otherwise spend a whole term guessing at: which subject, which paper, which habit. We would rather sell the diagnosis than the guess. Those rates were read in October 2026 and belong to the companies that published them; we quote after a free trial for your child's specific subject, board and tier.

Can sessions happen at the weekend rather than after school?+

Yes, and in this community they often should. There is no school inside The Valley, so every run is outbound and a secondary student is realistically home around a quarter past five. Whole papers, mark-scheme review and practical paper work all need uninterrupted time, which genuinely exists only at the weekend here. One weekday evening hour for content plus a weekend block for papers is the structure that lasts a full term in a Valley household.

Will a tutor travel to The Valley for a subject lesson?+

Not one of ours. IB Gram runs no home visits anywhere in the UAE, and nobody will arrive at an address in this community. Lessons are one-to-one and live over video, with questions on screen and a shared whiteboard where working appears as it is written. Home tutoring is a service we operate in India only. For IGCSE subject work the format costs very little, because the diagnostic information a tutor needs is the line where the student hesitates, which is visible either way.

Our son is strong in biology and weak in chemistry and physics. What does that mean?+

Usually that the cause is arithmetic rather than three separate content problems. Chemistry and physics both carry calculation, rearranging, prefixes and significant figures, while biology carries terminology and volume. A student who holds up in biology and drifts in the other two is almost always losing marks to the mathematics inside science, and one engagement on that fixes two subjects at once. It is worth confirming from marked papers in all three before committing to anything.

Do you cover geography and history as well as the sciences?+

Yes, and the work is different in kind. Those subjects are decided by source handling and case-study specificity: students lose marks describing a source rather than using it as evidence, and offering generic examples where the mark scheme expected a named, dated case study. The fix is building a small bank of precise case studies and practising source questions against the official mark schemes. Coverage is strongest in the mainstream Cambridge specifications; if we cannot match a particular option we will say so.

How soon will we see marks move?+

For command-word and method causes, about three to four weeks, because the change appears directly in the next marked paper. For arithmetic fluency, four to eight weeks, since it improves through repetition. Genuine content gaps take one to three weeks per topic. Each session note records which error classes appeared rather than which topics were covered, so the trend sits in the record. We publish no improvement statistics, because a figure without a sample size, a date and a method is not evidence.

Why does this page not name the best tutor in the area?+

Because there is no honest way to do it and the phrase would be a claim we could not support. What we can publish is checkable: the syllabus codes, what each paper assesses, the command words that cost marks, AED figures with their publisher and the month read, and a statement of what we hold no approval for. Several providers in this market publish self-asserted ratings that contradict their own page text. A page that shows its working is more useful than one that asserts a ranking.

The code, the tier and one marked paper

Those three things usually produce a specific plan within ten minutes, because IGCSE losses are visible on the page. If you can also classify each lost mark as content, command word, method, arithmetic or timing before we speak, the first conversation becomes precise rather than exploratory. Next is a free trial lesson on the question type that is actually failing, with the tutor who would continue, then a written plan naming topics and command words. Lessons run one-to-one over live video into The Valley in Gulf Standard Time, with no home visits anywhere in the UAE, and weekend blocks where the commute makes weekday evenings tight.
