IB Maths Tutor in The Valley

Families looking for an IB maths tutor in The Valley are usually comparing more than tutors. Because children here travel to schools in two directions, some offering the Diploma and some A Levels, the real question is often which mathematics route a student should be on at all. This page compares IB mathematics with A Level Mathematics, then Analysis and Approaches with Applications and Interpretation, then sets out the exploration, the marks and the two-year cost. Lessons are one-to-one and live over video.

IB & IGCSE in The Valley

In this community the first comparison is between qualifications

The Valley is a newer community on the road to Al Ain with no school inside its own boundary at the time of writing, so students here travel outward in two broad directions and attend several different schools. Some of those schools run the IB Diploma; others run A Levels; a few offer both. The practical result is that a mathematics conversation in this community frequently starts earlier than it does elsewhere, with a choice between qualifications rather than between levels within one.

That makes this page a comparison page in a specific sense. It begins with IB mathematics against A Level Mathematics, because that is the decision a Valley family often faces when choosing a school or a post-16 route. Then it compares the two IB routes, Analysis and Approaches against Applications and Interpretation, which is the decision that follows. Only after that does it get to the things that are the same whichever answer a family reaches: the exploration, the marks and the cost.

The headline difference between the qualifications is coursework and breadth. IB mathematics carries an exploration worth 20% of the grade at both Higher and Standard Level, written independently and submitted to a school deadline months before any examination. A Level Mathematics is externally examined with no coursework component. A student who writes well and plans badly is better served by one; a student who performs under timed conditions and resists independent writing is better served by the other.

What does not differ is the nature of the local supply problem. The number of people in Dubai who teach Higher Level Analysis and Approaches to examination standard is modest, and they are not distributed by villa community. In a neighbourhood with no school inside it and no school-gate network, a proximity search for that specific skill returns almost nothing, which is why the match has to be made on the course taught rather than on the map.

Delivery is online and stated plainly rather than implied: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, and nobody will arrive at an address in The Valley. Lessons are one-to-one and live over video, with a shared whiteboard on which working appears as it is written. Household visits exist in our India operation only. For mathematics the format loses almost nothing, because the subject is the working on the page and the diagnostic information is the line where a student hesitates. The format also removes the two car journeys either side of a visit, which in a household where the school run has already taken an hour from the day is the difference between a session a student can use and one they merely attend.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Mathematics runs through the whole continuum here, and in a community whose children attend several schools the preparation that keeps options open matters more than the label on the course. These are the stages we teach.

Middle Years mathematics

Assessed on four criteria: knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Capable students lose most ground on investigating patterns, because describing a pattern is not the same as justifying a general rule, and on communicating, where notation and structure are marked rather than the answer.

Valley students reach the Middle Years at several different schools, so the point at which extended and standard mathematics pathways separate varies between neighbours. A family hoping to keep a Higher Level route open should ask its own school when that split happens rather than assuming the street shares a timetable.

DP-AAAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

Algebra, functions, calculus, trigonometry, proof and statistics, with the emphasis on analytic method. Standard Level sits two papers; Higher Level sits three, the third an extended investigative problem rewarding a sustained written argument. The exploration carries 20% at both levels and is assessed partly on mathematical communication.

This is the course Dubai families ask about when engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science or quantitative economics is in view. Published university requirements differ and are revised, so read the admissions pages of the specific institutions on the shortlist rather than relying on general advice, including ours.

DP-AIAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

Modelling, statistics, data interpretation and applied contexts with technology assumed throughout. It is a different mathematics rather than an easier one, and Higher Level contains substantial work on matrices, graph theory and complex modelling. The recurring failure is treating a calculator output as the answer rather than as a step requiring justification.

Students in this belt who switch from Analysis and Approaches to Applications partway through the first Diploma year usually do so for sound reasons and too late. The switch is far easier in the first term than the second, because the exploration and the accumulated content both have to reset and schools set their own deadlines for changing a registered course.

ALTAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

A Level Mathematics as the alternative

Externally examined with no coursework component, narrower in breadth and deeper in the pure mathematics it covers, usually taken alongside two or three other A Levels rather than within a six-subject framework. Students who perform well under timed conditions and dislike independent extended writing often do better here than in the Diploma.

Several schools reachable from The Valley offer A Levels, and a few offer both routes, which means this is a live choice for families here rather than a theoretical one. The decision should be made on how the student works rather than on which qualification sounds more demanding, because both are accepted widely by universities.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Mathematics is the subject here, so what follows is the detail by course and by the subjects that depend on it. The specific weakness matters more than the course name when booking.

Analysis and Approaches, Higher Level

HL

Three papers, with Paper 3 an extended investigative problem. Proof, calculus and complex manipulation dominate, and marks are lost on incomplete justification in proof questions and on calculus applied without checking the domain. Paper 3 rewards students who have practised sustaining an argument across pages.

Analysis and Approaches, Standard Level

SL

Two papers covering the same areas with less depth. The commonest profile is a student who can execute a procedure but cannot select which procedure an unfamiliar question needs, which mixed unlabelled question sets fix faster than further topic drills.

Applications and Interpretation, Higher Level

HL

More demanding than students expect, with matrices, graph theory and complex modelling. The technology-assumed design means the examiner wants interpretation rather than output, and statistical tests must be chosen and justified rather than simply performed and reported.

Applications and Interpretation, Standard Level

SL

Weighted towards modelling, statistics and real-data work. Marks disappear in the sentences around the numbers: a correct regression with no comment on validity, or a prediction made beyond the range of the data with no acknowledgement of the problem.

The mathematics exploration

HL and SL, both routes

Twenty per cent of the grade and twenty marks across five criteria covering presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and the use of mathematics. The commonest cause of a low mark is a topic too ambitious to be handled rigorously rather than one too simple.

Middle Years mathematics

Standard and extended

Criterion-marked rather than graded on content alone, with investigating patterns the criterion capable students most often neglect. Extended mathematics in the final Middle Years years is the honest preparation for Higher Level work afterwards, whichever qualification follows.

Physics, where the mathematics is the obstacle

HL and SL

A substantial share of lost physics marks are mathematical: rearranging before substituting, handling powers of ten, propagating uncertainty. Students whose physics improves after mathematics tutoring generally never had a physics problem in the first place.

Chemistry calculations

HL and SL

Energetics, equilibrium and titration work carry sign conventions and unit conversions that punish approximate arithmetic. The fix is procedural discipline rather than more chemistry, which is why a mathematics tutor sometimes raises a chemistry grade.

Economics, quantitative components

HL

Higher Level Economics includes quantitative questions rewarding exactly the skills Analysis and Approaches builds: reading a function, calculating accurately, and interpreting what the number means in context rather than restating it in words.

A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics

AS and A2

For students on the alternative route, the demands differ: no coursework, more pure mathematics, and examination technique under timing carrying the whole grade. Students moving between routes mid-stream need a bridging block rather than general support.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes for mathematics tuition here, and the commute decides when each happens as much as the problem decides which.

Weekly fluency work

For students whose difficulty is speed and accuracy in manipulation rather than understanding of concepts. Sessions are short, dense and repetitive by design: rearranging, factorising, differentiating standard forms, index laws, until those operations stop consuming attention. It is the least glamorous mathematics tutoring and the most reliably effective at Standard Level.

  • Deliberately repetitive manipulation practice, timed
  • Short daily between-session sets rather than one long task
  • Measured in speed and accuracy, not topics covered
  • Free trial on the operation the student currently finds slowest

Exploration support at the weekend

Sessions on the exploration in a longer weekend block, because scoping and writing need uninterrupted thinking time that a weekday evening after a long school run does not provide. The highest-value work is at the start, testing whether the topic can be handled with the mathematics the student actually commands.

  • Topic feasibility tested before any writing begins
  • Criterion-by-criterion review against the published criteria
  • Feedback as questions and comments on the student's own draft
  • No text written, rewritten or supplied by the tutor at any stage

Paper technique blocks, including Paper 3

For Higher Level students in the final terms, built around paper sections under timing and, for Analysis and Approaches, the extended investigative problem specifically. Paper 3 is a different skill from the other two papers and most students have practised it least, which makes it the clearest remaining source of marks.

  • Paper sections attempted under timing, then dissected
  • Paper 3 practised as a sustained written argument
  • Method-mark discipline enforced on every question
  • Weekend two-hour blocks where a weekday hour is not enough

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in The Valley

01

IB mathematics against A Level Mathematics, for a family choosing

This comparison matters more in The Valley than in a community built around a single continuum school, because students here travel to schools offering both routes and the choice is genuinely open. Both qualifications are widely accepted by universities, so the decision should be made on how the student works rather than on which sounds harder. The differences that actually affect a student's two years are coursework, breadth, and how much of the grade rests on performance in a single week.

IB mathematics carries an exploration worth 20% of the grade at both levels, written independently over months and submitted to a school deadline well before the examinations. A Level Mathematics has no coursework component: the grade is decided entirely by externally examined papers. That is the single biggest practical difference. A student who writes and plans well banks a fifth of their grade early; a student who struggles with self-managed writing carries that weakness into a fifth of the result.

Breadth is the second difference. The Diploma requires six subjects plus the core, so mathematics sits inside a wide programme with competing deadlines. A Levels usually mean three or four subjects studied more deeply. Neither is better in the abstract, and the honest advice is to read the student rather than the qualification. The table sets out the dimensions that decide it, including the signals that are visible by the end of a first term in either route, which is when a change is still practical.

02

Analysis and Approaches against Applications and Interpretation

Once a family has settled on the Diploma, this is the decision that follows and it is routinely taken for the wrong reason. Applications and Interpretation is not the easy option; it is a different mathematics, weighted towards modelling, statistics and technology use, with a Higher Level that is genuinely demanding. Analysis and Approaches is weighted towards algebra, calculus and proof. Choosing by perceived difficulty tends to produce a student who dislikes their own course and performs below their capability inside it.

What a week of homework actually feels like is a better guide than any syllabus summary. In Analysis and Approaches the work is largely manipulation and proof: a problem resolves or it does not, and the satisfaction is in exactness. In Applications the work is modelling and interpretation: a result has to be judged, bounded and explained in words. Students usually have a clear preference once the distinction is put to them this way, and that preference predicts performance better than prior attainment does.

The constraint is university requirements, which should be read rather than assumed. Engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science and quantitative economics commonly expect Analysis and Approaches, frequently at Higher Level. Business, psychology, design and most social sciences generally accept either, and some prefer the statistical grounding Applications gives. Published requirements differ by institution and change, so check the admissions pages of the specific universities on the shortlist early enough to act on what they say.

03

The exploration: twenty marks, five criteria

A fifth of an IB mathematics grade comes from the exploration, an independent piece of mathematical writing marked out of twenty across five criteria. Almost nothing in this market explains those criteria, which is strange, because knowing what each one rewards is what should drive the choice of topic. The commonest cause of a disappointing mark is a topic too ambitious for the mathematics the student can handle rigorously rather than a topic that was too modest.

Criterion weighting should therefore drive topic choice. The use of mathematics criterion carries the largest share of the marks, and it rewards mathematics that is correct, relevant and commensurate with the level of the course. A student who reaches far beyond the syllabus and handles it loosely scores below a student who takes a modest topic and treats it rigorously. Personal engagement and reflection reward genuine ownership and genuine critique, neither of which can be manufactured in the final week before submission.

The boundary on what a tutor may do is strict and we state it rather than leaving it vague. A tutor may explain each criterion, test whether a topic is feasible, question whether a step is justified, point out that a conclusion does not follow, and comment on writing the student produced. A tutor may not choose the topic, perform the mathematics, write or rewrite any part of the exploration, or supply a model to adapt. Operations in this market sell completed internal assessments; buying one is academic misconduct and the candidate carries the consequence.

E: Use of mathematics6Mathematics correct, relevant and at the level of the courseAmbitious mathematics handled loosely, or syllabus work repeated
04

Higher Level against Standard Level, and the hours it costs

The level decision sits beneath the route decision and is often taken too quickly. Higher Level Analysis and Approaches adds depth across algebra, calculus and proof and adds a third paper which is an extended investigative problem rather than a longer version of the other two. That paper is the part students have practised least and the part that most clearly separates outcomes, because it rewards a sustained argument rather than a series of discrete answers.

Teaching hours are the practical constraint, and in a commuting community they are tighter than elsewhere. Higher Level courses carry more contact time at school, and a student taking three Higher Levels plus the core already has a full timetable before a long school run is added. Adding two tutored hours a week on top of that is frequently counterproductive: the between-session work does not get done and the student arrives each week having forgotten the last session.

The right-fit signals are observable by the end of the first term. A student suited to Higher Level will sit with a problem that does not resolve immediately. A student unsuited to it executes taught procedures accurately and stalls at anything unfamiliar. That difference shows up in how they behave in front of an unseen question, which is exactly what a diagnostic session examines, and it is far better established in the first Diploma year than in the second, when a change of level is administratively harder and the accumulated content works against it.

05

Where IB maths marks are lost, and how long each takes to fix

Mathematics is unusually diagnosable, because a lost mark almost always has one identifiable cause and the causes repeat. Across both routes the pattern is consistent: manipulation that is slow rather than wrong, method marks forfeited by writing only an answer, calculator results presented without interpretation, and domain or validity ignored. None of those are conceptual gaps, and all of them are correctable within a term if they are named rather than described as weakness in maths.

The most expensive habit is answering without showing method. Both routes award method marks on multi-step questions, and a student who writes only a final answer forfeits every one of them whenever the answer is wrong. Under time pressure this feels efficient and is the opposite. Correcting it takes several weeks of enforcement rather than explanation, because it is a habit, which is precisely the kind of thing a weekly slot across a term is good at and a crash course is not.

The second most expensive, in Applications and Interpretation, is calculator dependence. The course assumes technology, which students read as permission to produce outputs. The examiner wants the output interpreted, justified and bounded: was the model appropriate, is the prediction inside the range of the data, what does the gradient mean here. That is a writing skill attached to a mathematical one, and it takes three to six weeks of practice alongside the mathematics rather than instead of it, because the student already has the result and only needs to learn what the examiner wants said about it.

What two years of mathematics support actually costs

Families usually ask about an hourly rate and then plan in terms they never total up. Published Dubai figures put a qualified subject tutor working online at AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with one agency advertising IB from AED 200, and IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and one premium provider advertising AED 650. In-home visits run AED 180 to AED 500 once travel is included, and budget online tutoring AED 33 to AED 65.

The useful exercise is to cost the whole Diploma rather than the hour, because mathematics is a two-year commitment and the sensible plan is uneven across it. A term of weekly sessions in the first year to secure fluency, a short exploration block, and a technique block before the final papers is a very different total from two years of continuous weekly tutoring, and in most cases it produces more. The uneven plan also matches where the marks actually move.

Bestimate's monthly estimates for one weekly hour run AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for specialist examination-year support, with monthly packages advertised at AED 799 for eight online sessions. All of these figures belong to the companies and rate guides that published them and were read in October 2026. IB Gram publishes no hourly list on these pages and quotes after a free trial, against the actual route and level.

Timing a mathematics session when the school run is long

  • Manipulation accuracy falls off sharply in the late evening
  • Fluency work benefits from frequency; exploration work needs blocks
  • Weekend sessions carry Paper 3 and exploration work in this community
  • Ramadan sessions move after Iftar with the same tutor retained

Mathematics tolerates a weekly rhythm well and tolerates fatigue badly, which makes session timing a real variable in a community with no school inside it. A Valley student is realistically home around a quarter past five, and manipulation accuracy drops noticeably after seven in the evening. A plan that puts a calculus session at eight o'clock is teaching a tired student to make errors they would not make at four, and then reviewing those errors as if they were real.

The structure that works here splits the work by its timing needs. Fluency drilling benefits from frequency rather than length, so two short weekday sessions beat one long one where the household can manage it. Exploration work and Paper 3 practice need uninterrupted blocks, which in this community means the weekend. A student doing one weekday fluency slot and one weekend block is running a better programme than one doing two tired weekday hours.

The UAE calendar then shapes the rest. The working week runs Monday to Friday with a half-day Friday, leaving Saturday and Sunday as the only full days. During Ramadan school hours shorten and the useful window moves after Iftar, where a mathematics session is frequently better than any afternoon slot in that month. Slots are held in Gulf Standard Time, move after Iftar with the same tutor, and can pause during a school's own examination fortnight when adding sessions produces fatigue rather than marks. We keep the same tutor across a term rather than rotating students to fill a diary, because knowing which manipulation a particular student rushes under pressure is most of what makes a later session efficient.

08

Honesty, materials and what we do not claim

  • A tutor questions and critiques the student's own exploration, nothing more
  • No topic selection, no mathematics performed, no text written or redrafted
  • Past papers and mark schemes referenced, never hosted or distributed
  • No regulator or IB approval, accreditation or partnership claimed

Mathematics has a particular honesty profile, because an exploration written by somebody else is often detectable: the mathematics in it does not match the mathematics the student demonstrates in class, and a teacher who has taught them for a year notices. Schools also run a formal process around the exploration including progress checks. So outsourced work in this subject carries a high practical risk as well as being unacceptable in principle, and the trade exists locally at a published price.

So the boundary is drawn as a single question, and everything else is derived from it: does any line in the finished exploration exist because the tutor wrote it? If the answer is yes anywhere, the piece is not your child's. Reading that test backwards produces the prohibitions, and they are the shorter list. A tutor may not select the topic, may not carry out the mathematics, may not write or redraft any part of the submission, and may not supply a specimen to be adapted. Everything else stays available, and it is where the twenty marks are actually earned: teaching the content, explaining each exploration criterion in turn, testing whether a topic is feasible at the level of the course, questioning whether a step is justified, pointing out an unsupported conclusion, and giving feedback on writing the student has already produced. A tutor working inside those limits can still move a grade. A tutor working outside them has put the whole diploma at risk for the sake of a few marks.

On materials and claims: IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are the IB's copyright, so we reference them and work from what the school legitimately holds. We do not describe tutors as IB examiners without evidenced current status. IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, Ministry or IB approval, accreditation or partnership and no UAE office, and an individual tutoring privately in the UAE needs a MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years.

Where we tutor

The Valley and the schools its students reach

The Valley lies along the Dubai to Al Ain road with no school inside its boundary at the time of writing. These are the directions its students travel and what each means for a mathematics session.

The Valley

A newer community with a town centre, sports village and parks. With no school inside it, mathematics demand here is spread across several different schools and two different qualifications rather than concentrated in one cohort.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

One of two main school-run directions and a long late-afternoon run, which puts the first realistic mathematics session at about 5.30pm. Calculus work after that hour is noticeably less productive, which argues for weekend blocks.

Nad Al Sheba and Meydan

The other main direction, with schools offering both the Diploma and A Levels. Families travelling this way are the ones most often weighing the two mathematics qualifications against each other rather than two levels of one.

Arabian Ranches and Mira

Across the Dubailand corridor with established provision. Demand from Valley families travelling this way concentrates on the transition into Diploma mathematics from IGCSE, where fluency rather than concept is the obstacle.

Town Square

Along the corridor with its own school provision, which gives families there a shorter day and an earlier usable session time. The contrast isolates exactly what the commute costs a Valley student in alert hours.

Mudon and Remraam

Communities off Al Qudra Road with outbound runs of their own. Supply of Higher Level mathematics specialists is thin in all of them, which is the same conclusion this page reaches about every neighbourhood in the corridor.

Dubai Hills Estate

Up the corridor, with the most competitive subject-choice conversations in this part of Dubai. Higher Level Analysis and Approaches is the single most requested course from those households, which indicates where the supply pressure sits.

Damac Hills 2 and the southern communities

Newer and further out, reliant on long runs in both directions. Families moving between these and The Valley often change school and sometimes qualification, which makes a bridging diagnostic worthwhile.

The Silicon Oasis, Academic City and Nad Al Sheba direction

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the route, the level and the year

Analysis and Approaches or Applications, Higher or Standard, first Diploma year or second — or A Level Mathematics if that is the route. Those four words decide which tutors we approach, and if the exploration is underway, say where it has reached.

  2. 02

Send a marked piece of work

A photograph of a recently marked paper or exploration draft is worth a long description, because mathematics errors are diagnosable from the page. We look for whether the losses are fluency, method, interpretation or genuine conceptual gaps, since those four need different sessions.

  3. 03

A free trial on an unseen question

Run by the tutor who would continue, using an unfamiliar question rather than a revision topic, because how a student behaves in front of something unseen is the whole diagnosis. It ends with the tutor naming the first thing they would fix and how long they expect it to take.

  4. 04

A plan with a measurable first target

You receive a short written plan naming the first specific target — showing method on every multi-step question, or narrowing the exploration to something feasible — with the sessions and between-session work to reach it, and the structure split between weekday and weekend.

  5. 05

Weekly sessions and a tracked error pattern

Each session note records which error categories appeared: fluency, method, interpretation, domain or concept. Over a month the pattern thins or it does not. If it does not, we change the approach or the tutor rather than quietly adding hours to the arrangement.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The qualification question answered first

In a community where students attend schools offering both routes, the honest starting point is whether IB mathematics or A Level Mathematics suits the student. We set that comparison out rather than assuming the answer is the course we tutor.

Matched to one of four IB courses

Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation at Higher and Standard Level are four distinct teaching jobs. Online delivery means your child is matched to someone who teaches their specific course, which no villa community can supply locally.

The exploration treated as 20% of the grade

Because it is. We work the criteria by letter with the mark allocation named, starting with topic feasibility, which is the decision that determines the use-of-mathematics mark months before anything is written down.

Two-year cost planned unevenly

A fluency term, an exploration block and a technique block usually beat two years of continuous weekly tutoring and cost considerably less. We will say that rather than sell the longest plan available.

A structure built for the commute

Fluency work on a weekday evening, exploration and Paper 3 work in a weekend block. Manipulation accuracy drops after seven in the evening, so a plan that ignores the school run is teaching a tired student to make avoidable errors.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in The Valley: your questions answered

Should our son do IB mathematics or A Level Mathematics?+

Decide it on how he works rather than on which sounds more demanding, because both are widely accepted by universities. The biggest practical difference is coursework: IB mathematics carries an exploration worth 20% of the grade, written independently and submitted months before the examinations, while A Level Mathematics has no coursework and is decided entirely by examined papers. A student who plans and writes well banks a fifth of the grade early; a student who performs best under timed conditions may prefer the A Level. Breadth is the second difference, six subjects against three or four.

Is Applications and Interpretation the easier IB maths route?+

No, it is a different mathematics. It is weighted towards modelling, statistics, data interpretation and technology use, and its Higher Level contains substantial work on matrices, graph theory and complex modelling. Analysis and Approaches is weighted towards algebra, calculus and proof. Choosing by perceived difficulty tends to produce a student who dislikes their course and underperforms in it. A better guide is what a week of homework feels like: exactness and proof in one, judgement and interpretation in the other.

What share of the final maths grade is decided before the exams?+

Twenty per cent at both Higher and Standard Level in both routes, marked out of twenty across five criteria: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics, with use of mathematics carrying six marks. It is submitted to a school deadline months before any examination, which makes it the part of the grade families most often discover too late to influence. If you are deciding when mathematics tutoring is worth paying for, that weighting argues for the first Diploma year.

Why does the commute matter for a maths session specifically?+

Because manipulation accuracy falls off with fatigue in a way that conceptual discussion does not. There is no school inside The Valley at the time of writing, so a secondary student is realistically home around a quarter past five, and a calculus session at eight in the evening produces errors the same student would not make at four. Reviewing those errors wastes the hour twice. The structure that works is a weekday evening slot for fluency and a weekend block for exploration and Paper 3 work.

What makes Paper 3 different in Higher Level Analysis and Approaches?+

It is an extended investigative problem rather than a longer set of questions. It rewards sustaining a written argument across pages: establishing a result, generalising it, justifying each step and holding structure throughout. Most students have practised it least, because it does not resemble the exercises they do in class, which makes it the clearest remaining source of marks in the final terms. It typically needs six to ten weeks of specific practice, separate from general paper work, and it suits a weekend block.

My daughter keeps getting answers right and losing marks. What is happening?+

Almost certainly that she writes only the final answer. Both IB mathematics routes award method marks across multi-step questions, so showing no working forfeits all of them whenever the final answer is wrong and gains nothing when it is right. Under time pressure it feels efficient and is the opposite. Correcting it takes two to four weeks of enforcement rather than explanation, because it is a habit. It is the cheapest grade improvement available in the subject and the one weekly sessions handle best.

Can a tutor choose or write part of the exploration?+

No, and a tutor offering to should be declined. The legitimate role is to explain each criterion, test whether a proposed topic can be handled rigorously with the mathematics the student commands, question whether a step is justified, and comment on writing the student produced. Choosing the topic, performing the mathematics or writing any part of it crosses into academic misconduct, and the consequence falls on the candidate. Teachers who have taught a student for a year also tend to notice mathematics that is not theirs.

How should we spread tutoring across the two Diploma years?+

Unevenly, because that is where the marks move. A term of weekly fluency work in the first year secures the manipulation the papers assume; a short block scoping and reviewing the exploration protects a fifth of the grade; a technique block before the mocks and again before the final papers is where most of the second year's gains sit. That plan usually produces more than two years of continuous weekly tutoring and costs considerably less. A crash course in the final term is the weakest use of the same money.

What does an IB maths specialist cost in Dubai?+

Published figures put a qualified subject tutor working online at AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with one agency advertising IB from AED 200, and IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 or more, with TutorChase publishing AED 270. In-home visits run AED 180 to AED 500 once travel is included. Bestimate's monthly estimate for one weekly hour is AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market. Those are market figures read in October 2026; we quote after a free trial for the actual route and level.

Does an online whiteboard work for mathematics?+

It is the subject where it works best, because the whole discipline is the working on the page and a shared whiteboard shows that working as it is produced. The tutor sees the line where the student hesitates, which is the diagnostic information that matters most. Screen-shared questions annotated step by step reproduce what happens on paper closely. The honest exception is younger children, roughly Year 5 and below, who often need an adult physically present for reasons unconnected to mathematics.

Our son wants to switch from Analysis and Approaches to Applications. Is that wise?+

It depends on the reason and heavily on the timing. If the reason is a genuine mismatch of thinking style, it is sensible; if it is the assumption that Applications is easier, it usually is not. Timing matters more: a switch in the first term is manageable, while a switch in the second means resetting the exploration as well as the accumulated content, and schools set their own deadlines for changing a registered course. Ask the school what its deadline is before deciding anything.

Is Higher Level maths worth taking if it is not required?+

Only if the student will sit with a problem that does not resolve immediately, because that is what the course and particularly Paper 3 assess. Higher Level carries more school contact time, which in a commuting household leaves less room for anything added, and a student taking three Higher Levels plus the core is already at capacity. If a target degree does not require it, Standard Level taken well and a stronger profile elsewhere is often the better outcome than Higher Level taken grimly.

We moved here mid-year and the maths sequence does not match. What now?+

A bridging block, which is one of the commonest requests in this community because families move in from across Dubai and from abroad. Schools teach topics in different orders, so a mid-year arrival typically has two or three genuinely unmet topics and two or three covered twice rather than a general weakness. A diagnostic session names which, and the gap usually closes within a term. Doing it in the first Diploma year is far cheaper than discovering it in the second.

After how many sessions should a change show up in marked work?+

About three to four weeks for a method or habit problem, because the change appears directly in the next marked paper. Fluency problems take four to eight weeks, since they improve through repetition rather than instruction. Conceptual gaps take one to three weeks per topic, and exploration work is judged against criteria rather than marks until the school assesses it. Session notes record which error categories appeared, so the trend is visible in the record rather than in impressions.

What will you actually tell us about a tutor's credentials?+

No. IB Gram is not IB-accredited, is not an IB World School, holds no KHDA or ADEK approval, no Cambridge or Pearson partnership, and no UAE office. We also do not describe tutors as IB examiners unless current examiner status can be evidenced, because that claim is widely made in this market and rarely supported. What we will tell you about any tutor is which route and level they teach and how long they have taught it to examination.

Route, level, year and where the exploration stands

If the qualification itself is still open, say so and we will set out the IB and A Level comparison properly rather than assuming the answer. If the route is settled, four facts get the match right: Analysis and Approaches or Applications, Higher or Standard, first Diploma year or second, and whether the exploration is unstarted, drafted or submitted. A photograph of recently marked work usually completes the diagnosis. Then comes a free trial lesson on an unseen question with the tutor who would continue, and a short written plan split between a weekday slot and a weekend block. Lessons run one-to-one over live video into The Valley, with no UAE home visits.
