IB Tutor near me in Al Wasl

Typing 'IB tutor near me' from Al Wasl is a proximity search with a subject question hiding inside it. The Diploma is six subjects, two assessment levels, an internally assessed component in nearly every one, and a core worth points of its own. Nobody is a specialist in all of that. This page answers the subject question group by group, and explains why lessons reach Al Wasl over live video rather than by car.

  • All six Diploma groups set out with where the marks are actually lost
  • Higher and Standard Level compared on weightings, not on reputation
  • A past-paper protocol that works across six subjects, published in full
  • Specialist scarcity named by group before you pay for anything

IB & IGCSE in Al Wasl

Six subjects, two levels, and the question behind the search

Al Wasl is a villa district on the Al Wasl Road corridor, minutes from the Al Safa school cluster and a short run from Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim. A parent searching 'IB tutor near me' from here is asking a geographical question and wanting an academic answer. The academic answer is that the Diploma is not one thing. It is six subjects drawn from six groups, each taken at Higher or Standard Level, each with its own papers and weightings, each with an internally assessed component, and all of it sitting alongside Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and a service commitment.

No individual is a specialist across that. The person who can take a Higher Level Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches student from a 5 to a 7 is not the person who should be teaching Language and Literature Paper 1, and a tutor who offers both across four curricula is describing availability rather than expertise. That is the real reason a proximity search disappoints: it optimises for the one variable that has no bearing on teaching quality, and it narrows the shortlist for a Higher Level science to whoever happens to be free and willing to drive.

The scale of the market makes this concrete. Dubai had 387,441 private-school pupils across 227 schools in 2024-25 offering seventeen different curricula, with UK curriculum at 37% of enrolment and International Baccalaureate programmes at roughly 7%. A Higher Level subject is a minority product inside a minority curriculum. Filter for somebody who has taught it in the last two academic years, is free at a particular hour in Gulf Standard Time, and will cross Dubai on a weekday afternoon, and the list for Higher Level physics or chemistry is very short in Al Wasl and equally short in Al Safa, Jumeirah and City Walk, because they share one road network.

IB Gram's answer is stated plainly. Lessons for UAE families run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, and there are no home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India. Dropping the travel requirement is the only one of the four constraints that costs nothing academically, and dropping it means the shortlist for an Al Wasl student is drawn from everybody who has taught the subject at the level required. Published Dubai in-home rates of AED 180 to 500 an hour against AED 150 to 300 for qualified online tutors show what the travel requirement costs in cash as well.

The rest of this page is the subject answer. It sets out the six groups with where marks are actually lost in each, compares Higher and Standard Level on the things that differ, explains the command-term vocabulary that is identical across all six subjects and taught in almost none of them, sets out the internally assessed components that nobody plans for, explains how the core contributes points, publishes a past-paper protocol that works across six subjects at once, and states where specialist availability is genuinely thin.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

An Al Wasl family searching this phrase is usually at one of four points, and the useful first move differs at each. These are the four, with what each one most needs.

DPAges 16-19

Diploma Programme, Years 12 and 13

Six subjects, three or four at Higher Level and the rest at Standard, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Assessment is predominantly external, with an internally assessed component in nearly every subject, usually around a fifth of the grade in the sciences. The core contributes up to three points of its own.

Al Wasl students are taught at the Al Safa, Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim campuses, and subject availability differs between them: not every school offers every group six subject, and timetable blocking can force a student to choose between two Higher Levels they wanted. Where the school cannot resolve a clash, the content missed has to be rebuilt outside school hours, which is the most common reason a family here starts looking in October.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme into the Diploma

Criterion-marked across eight subject groups, four criteria per subject each out of eight. Students arrive in the Diploma strong on inquiry, independence and documentation, and thinner on timed examination stamina and fast content recall. Both deficits are addressable in the summer before Year 12 and considerably harder to fix in the second term.

One IB continuum school sits in Al Safa within minutes of Al Wasl, with others in Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim, so this route exists locally but serves a minority of households in a corridor dominated by British-curriculum schools. Families on it will field constant comparison with neighbours sitting Year 11 qualifications, which is a reporting difference rather than an attainment one.

IGCSEAges 14-16

A Year 11 qualification into the Diploma

Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel International GCSE, the dominant route in this corridor. Extended or Higher tier content is what Diploma courses assume: the algebra, the quantitative science and the essay structure all reappear at speed in Year 12 and are not retaught. A Core or Foundation background is a genuine obstacle for Higher Level sciences and mathematics.

The summer between Year 11 and Year 12 is the highest-value support window available to an Al Wasl family and almost nobody uses it. Six weeks on algebraic speed, quantitative fluency and timed writing is cheaper than a term of rescue in Year 12 and removes the three most common causes of an early Diploma stumble before any of them happen.

Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and the internal assessments

Theory of Knowledge is assessed through a prescribed-title essay and an exhibition; the Extended Essay is a 4,000-word independent piece with a school supervisor. Together they contribute up to three points. Each subject also carries its own internally assessed component. All of it is the student's own work.

This is the part of the Dubai market an Al Wasl parent should be most careful about. One provider in this cluster has been documented selling completed internal assessments at AED 3,750. That is an academic-integrity breach and a malpractice trigger, and the consequence falls on the student. Schools here run originality checks and supervisors sign declarations, so the exposure is concrete.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The Diploma subjects Al Wasl families most often need, with what each one is actually assessed on. The point of the detail is that it is what a tutor should be matched against, rather than a postcode.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

Higher Level and Standard Level

The most requested subject in this corridor and the one where a proximity search fails most often. Higher Level requires fluent calculus, proof, complex numbers and vectors taught at pace, and comfort with Standard Level does not imply comfort with Higher. Ask a prospective tutor which Higher Level topics they have taught in the last two years.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

Higher Level and Standard Level

Statistics-led with graphing technology assumed throughout. Standard Level is easier to staff than Analysis and Approaches because more general mathematics teachers can cover it well. Higher Level, with its statistical inference and modelling, is a genuinely different course and a much smaller pool of teachers.

Physics

Higher Level and Standard Level

Five themes, two written papers and one scientific investigation, with no third paper in the current course. The scarcest science locally and the one where families most often end up with a mathematics teacher covering it. The data-based section and the uncertainty arithmetic are the specialist parts.

Chemistry

Higher Level and Standard Level

Six themes, two written papers and one scientific investigation. The quantitative chain from moles to concentration to yield breaks at a link the student cannot locate alone, and the organic mechanisms theme needs volume with correction rather than explanation. Thin availability at Higher Level across every Dubai district.

Biology

Higher Level and Standard Level

Better covered locally than physics or chemistry, with a large recall load and the same investigation criteria as the other sciences. The specialist value is in command-term discipline and in teaching the student to answer the question that was asked rather than the one they revised for.

Economics and Business Management

Higher Level and Standard Level

Internally assessed commentaries or a project alongside the examinations, with Higher Level adding quantitative content in economics. Popular in this corridor, reasonably well staffed, and the place where a specialist earns the rate by teaching the assessment criteria rather than improving the writing.

English A: Language and Literature

Higher Level and Standard Level

Paper 1 unseen analysis, Paper 2 comparative essay, an individual oral, and at Higher Level a further essay. The individual oral is the component families underestimate most and the one that benefits most from being rehearsed properly rather than discussed. Widely available in principle, with a wide quality spread.

Language acquisition: French, Spanish and Arabic

Higher Level, Standard Level and ab initio

Availability depends sharply on the language and the level. Arabic at a high level is better served in Dubai than in most markets; ab initio Spanish or French in a specific evening slot is harder to fill. Oral components need a tutor who will conduct them under timed conditions rather than talk about them.

Theory of Knowledge

Diploma core

A prescribed-title essay and an exhibition of three objects, contributing points alongside the Extended Essay. Science and mathematics students often find the exhibition harder than the essay, because it asks for an argument about knowledge rather than about content, and it tends to be neglected until Year 13.

The Extended Essay

Diploma core · 4,000 words

An independent 4,000-word piece with a school-allocated supervisor who holds the formal meetings and signs the declaration. A tutor may coach the subject content and the assessment criteria and may not write, edit or supply any part of it. Narrowing the research question early is the single most useful hour available.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Four shapes of Diploma support, chosen by which of the four constraints is actually binding. All run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.

One subject, weekly, through the term

The default and usually the right one. A single Higher Level subject taken weekly against the school's own scheme of work, so the hour repairs live content rather than last term's. A Diploma student carrying six subjects plus the core cannot absorb more than one or two tutored hours a week without displacing their own work.

  • Fixed weekday slot between 16:30 and 21:30 Gulf Standard Time
  • Planned from the school's topic sequence, not a generic order
  • Written note after each session naming the next two priorities

Two subjects, one tutor, where it genuinely works

Possible in a small number of combinations: physics with mathematics, chemistry with biology, economics with business management. The test is whether the tutor can diagnose across both, for instance recognising that a physics error is a logarithm error. Where they cannot, two subjects with one tutor is worse than one subject done properly.

  • Only in genuinely adjacent pairs, and tested in the diagnostic lesson
  • Shared work on uncertainties, algebra or command terms counts twice
  • We will say when a pair should be split between two specialists

Internal assessment and core coaching

Short front-loaded blocks on the internally assessed component of a subject, on the Extended Essay research question, or on the Theory of Knowledge exhibition. Criteria taught, research questions interrogated, arguments challenged. Nothing written, edited or supplied, and the school remains the supervisor and the authenticator.

  • Front-loaded before data or drafting, not afterwards
  • Criteria taught explicitly with the descriptors on screen
  • Spoken, questioning feedback only; no edits typed into a student's file

Paper blocks and holiday intensives

Timed papers marked against the published mark scheme with losses categorised, run as a block before mocks or the May session. Dubai's winter and spring breaks allow ninety-minute sessions and genuine structural work, and the summer between Year 11 and Year 12 is the single most valuable window available.

  • Papers from the correct subject, level and recent series
  • Losses categorised rather than scored
  • Weekend and holiday morning slots in Gulf Standard Time

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Al Wasl

Each tutor below teaches one or two Diploma subjects at a named level rather than the Diploma in general. What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Wasl

01

What 'near me' actually gets you, and what it does not

  • Proximity selects for willingness to drive, not for subject knowledge
  • Subject, level, hour and location multiply; only location is free to drop
  • Ask any provider for a number, not for reassurance

A proximity search is a reasonable instinct and a poor filter. What it gets an Al Wasl family is a list of people who are willing to drive to Al Wasl Road on a weekday afternoon, which is a selection criterion with no relationship to whether somebody can teach Higher Level chemistry. What it does not get is the thing the parent actually wants, which is a person who has taught the specific subject at the specific level and can name where this particular student is losing marks by the end of the first hour.

The four constraints on a match are subject, level, hour and location, and they multiply rather than add. Requiring a specific subject cuts the pool hard. Requiring a specific level cuts it again, because comfort with Standard Level does not transfer upwards. Requiring a specific weekday hour cuts what remains, since the best tutors are teaching full days and have a small number of evening slots. Requiring physical presence in one district cuts it a fourth time, and that is the only one of the four a family can remove without giving up anything academic.

There is a test that settles this in one question, and it works on any provider including this one. Rather than asking whether they cover Al Wasl, ask how many tutors on their books have taught your child's exact subject at your child's level in the last two academic years and are free between 17:00 and 19:00 Gulf Standard Time. A provider drawing on the whole country can answer with a number. A provider drawing on a twenty-minute radius will talk about experience instead. The answer tells a parent more than any list of neighbourhoods on a landing page.

02

The six groups, and which of them need a specialist

The Diploma draws six subjects from six groups: studies in language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, and the arts, with a second subject from another group permitted in place of the arts. Each group is assessed differently, each loses marks in a characteristic place, and the depth of local specialist supply varies enormously between them. The table below sets that out, and the last column is the one that matters when a family is deciding where a limited budget goes.

The pattern is consistent across Dubai and not specific to this corridor. Higher Level sciences and Higher Level Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches are the tight spots. English A and the essay-based individuals and societies subjects are reasonably well staffed, with a wide spread in quality that is hard to judge from a profile. The less commonly taught languages and ab initio levels are genuinely scarce, and group six arts subjects are the hardest of all to match, because the assessment is portfolio-based and few tutors have examined it.

One further point about the group structure is worth making because it changes priorities. A student is not trying to improve six subjects. They are trying to improve a points total, and the marginal point is cheapest to win where the student is closest to a boundary and where the assessment is most responsive to technique. A subject at 5 with technique losses is a better investment than a subject at 3 with foundational gaps, and the second of those is where families instinctively put the money. That arithmetic is the honest basis for deciding which subject gets the funded hour.

03

Higher Level against Standard Level, compared properly

Parents are told that Higher Level is harder, which is true and not useful. What a family needs is the specific nature of the difference, because it determines how many hours a plan needs and whether a Standard Level tutor can help. In the sciences the component weightings are identical between the levels and the extra Higher Level load arrives as additional depth within the same themes plus longer papers; the practical consequence is that the algebra gets heavier rather than the concepts getting stranger. In mathematics the two levels are substantively different courses with different content lists.

The second real difference is pace, and it is the one that catches out able students in Year 12. A Higher Level course covers more content in the same number of weeks, which means a week missed through illness or a school trip costs more and a topic not understood the first time is not revisited. Students who coped comfortably through a Year 11 qualification often meet their first genuine difficulty in the second term of Year 12, and the cause is usually accumulation rather than difficulty: three partially understood topics behaving like one large gap.

The third is the university question, which should be settled by reading rather than by assumption. Some engineering and physical-science programmes name Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches specifically, and some require a Higher Level science. Requirements differ between institutions and between years, and they are published. Twenty minutes spent reading the actual entry requirements of the universities on a student's list, in Year 12 rather than Year 13, prevents a subject change that cannot be undone. No tutoring page should be the source of that information, and this one is not.

04

Command terms, which are identical across all six subjects

  • 'State' is one line; 'describe' is detail; 'explain' needs reasons
  • 'Evaluate' needs limitations and a judgement, not a list of strengths
  • 'Deduce' must use the information given; 'determine' needs a unit
  • One block of command-term work raises marks in all six subjects at once

This is the cheapest intervention available to a Diploma student and the one almost no school teaches explicitly, because teachers reasonably assume it is absorbed. Command terms are defined, they ask for a specific shape of answer, and marks are allocated on the assumption that the student responded to the term rather than to the topic. 'State' asks for a specific answer with no supporting argument. 'Outline' asks for a brief account. 'Describe' asks for detail without reasons. 'Explain' asks for reasons or causes, and is where most losses live because students describe instead.

The higher-order terms are where a Higher Level student loses the marks that separate a 6 from a 7. 'Deduce' requires a conclusion drawn from the information given, which means the answer must reference that information. 'Determine' requires a quantity, which means a number with its unit. 'Evaluate' requires strengths and limitations and a judgement, so an answer that lists advantages caps the mark however accurate it is. 'Discuss' requires a balanced review. 'Justify' requires the evidence behind a statement. 'Suggest' invites a plausible answer where more than one exists and rewards a student who commits and defends.

The reason this belongs on a page about proximity is that it is the one piece of work that pays off in all six subjects at once. A student who learns to read command terms properly gains marks in chemistry, in economics, in biology and in history in the same term, from a single block of three or four sessions. It is the highest-return hour in the Diploma and it is almost never what a family asks for, because it does not map onto a subject. A tutor who identifies that pattern in a diagnostic lesson and recommends it rather than a year of subject sessions is giving the more useful answer.

05

Internal assessments: the fifth of the grade nobody plans for

  • Nearly every subject has an internal component; around a fifth of a science grade
  • They reward front-loading; the common failures cannot be repaired later
  • A tutor teaches criteria and challenges reasoning; the student writes every word
  • Extended Essay supervision belongs to the school and cannot be bought elsewhere

Nearly every Diploma subject carries an internally assessed component, and in the sciences it is around a fifth of the grade. The mathematics exploration, the science investigation, the economics commentaries, the language oral and the arts portfolio are all assessed against published criteria and all produced in the student's own time. Collectively they represent a substantial share of a points total, and they are the part of the Diploma most consistently left to drift, because the deadlines are internal and therefore feel negotiable until they are not.

Two things follow for an Al Wasl family planning support. The first is that these components reward front-loading rather than rescue. In the sciences the failure mode is a research question too broad to answer with the data it generates, which cannot be repaired once the data exists. In mathematics it is an exploration with no genuine mathematical content beyond the syllabus level. In economics it is a commentary that summarises an article instead of applying a specific diagram and theory to it. All three are fixed cheaply at the planning stage and expensively afterwards.

The second is the boundary on help, which we state rather than imply. A tutor may teach what each criterion rewards, interrogate a proposed research question, challenge whether a conclusion follows from the evidence, explain word limits and referencing conventions, and point out that an evaluation has identified nothing systematic. A tutor may not write, edit, restructure or supply any part of the work, may not choose the research question, and may not produce the analysis. One provider in this market has been documented selling completed internal assessments at AED 3,750; that is a malpractice trigger and the student carries it. For the Extended Essay specifically, supervision is a school role that cannot be outsourced: the supervisor is allocated by the school, holds the formal meetings and signs the declaration.

06

The core: Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and the points

  • Up to three points from the combination of the two core grades
  • A poor enough grade in either is a failing condition for the diploma
  • Science and mathematics students neglect Theory of Knowledge most predictably
  • Ask the Diploma coordinator for the current published points matrix

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay together contribute up to three points to a Diploma total, awarded from a published matrix that combines the grades achieved in each. The exact combinations are set out in the matrix the school's Diploma coordinator can show you, and it is worth asking for rather than relying on a tutoring page; what matters for planning is the shape of it. Strong performance in both produces the maximum; weak performance in one is partly offset by strength in the other; and a sufficiently poor grade in either is a failing condition for the diploma regardless of how high the subject points are.

That last point is the one families do not know and it changes behaviour. A student with 38 subject points who neglects the core entirely is not safe, because the core carries conditions as well as points. Science and mathematics students are the most at risk here, for a predictable reason: Theory of Knowledge asks for an argument about how knowledge is produced and justified, which is a different intellectual activity from anything else on their timetable, and the exhibition in particular asks them to build a case from three objects. It gets postponed, and then it is Year 13.

The useful intervention is small and early. For the Extended Essay, one or two hours narrowing the research question before any research begins, because an unbounded question cannot be rescued. For Theory of Knowledge, a session on what the exhibition is actually asking and a second on structuring an argument around a prescribed title. For both, the boundary is the same: the tutor coaches the criteria and questions the reasoning, the school supervises and authenticates, and the student writes every word. Two or three hours spent on the core in Year 12 is worth more in points than the same hours spent on a sixth subject already at a 5.

07

A past-paper protocol that works across six subjects

A Diploma student cannot run six separate revision systems, and attempting to is why Year 13 revision so often produces activity without improvement. What works is one protocol applied to every subject, with the definition of 'a paper' adjusted per subject type. The protocol has four steps: sit the thing under genuine time with no resources, mark it against the published mark scheme rather than a worked solution, assign every lost mark to one of five categories, and spend the next session on the largest category rather than on the topic that produced the most losses.

The five categories are content not known, command term misread, notation or units, missing reasoning step, and arithmetic or accuracy. They are deliberately few, because a taxonomy a student will not maintain is worthless. Counting them across all six subjects produces the single most useful piece of information in Year 13: whether the student has a subject problem or a habit problem. Command-term losses spread evenly across four subjects point to one block of work that fixes all four. Content losses concentrated in one subject point to teaching in that subject and nowhere else.

The table below adjusts the protocol for subject type, because 'a past paper' means different things in an essay subject, a quantitative subject and a language. Two design notes carry across all of them. Volume should fall in the final fortnight rather than rise, since by then the useful work is targeted repair and a student sitting three full papers a week is exhausting themselves. And every lost question should be re-attempted once, days later, because marking without re-attempting measures a weakness without addressing it.

Online delivery, availability, and what we will not claim

  • The marginal point is usually cheapest in a subject near a boundary, not the weakest one
  • Market bands: AED 150-300 qualified online, AED 180-500 in-home, AED 600-1,200 monthly mid-market
  • Online, one-to-one, Gulf Standard Time; UAE home visits are not offered
  • Coverage limits published; no accreditation claimed; no IB dates published here

Start with where the marginal hour buys the most. A Diploma student is optimising a points total, not six separate grades, and the cheapest point to win is usually in a subject sitting just below a boundary with technique losses rather than in the weakest subject with foundational gaps. The published Dubai rates are the same whichever subject the hour goes into: qualified subject tutors working online at AED 150 to 300 an hour, specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above with TutorChase at AED 270 and BartyED at AED 650, budget online provision at AED 33 to 52 from Tutopiya and AED 45 to 65 from EdFlik, and in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350 in Bestimate's 2026 rate table with independent home tutors quoting AED 200 to 500. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly hour run AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year work. Those are other companies' published figures, named and dated.

Delivery is one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not provide home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India. Availability is finite and we publish where it binds. Higher Level physics, chemistry and Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches may take up to a week to fill in a narrow weekday window. Ab initio and less commonly taught languages, and group six arts subjects, take longer. Standard Level sciences, English A, economics and history are usually matched in two or three days. When the first choice is unavailable we name which of three applies: a different hour with the right specialist, an adjacent specialism with the limitation stated, or a wait. No competitor page in the researched set publishes a coverage limit at all.

The claims declined. IB Gram is not approved, accredited, certified or licensed by KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the IB organisation, Cambridge or Pearson; a KHDA educational services permit belongs to training institutes with premises and we hold none. There is no IB Gram office, centre or branch in the UAE. Private tuition in the UAE requires a MoHRE work permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years, and tutoring without one carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws with no published schedule of amounts, so none is quoted. No IB session or results date appears here, because the IB organisation's site blocks automated checking and a date a parent acts on must come from the school's coordinator. And no tutor can guarantee a grade or a points total.

Where we tutor

Al Wasl and where its Diploma students are taught

What differs between the districts around Al Wasl is which schools and which subject offerings sit inside each drive, not how many Diploma specialists live there. These are the areas and what each contains.

Al Wasl

Villas and compounds along Al Wasl Road with no substantial secondary campus inside the district, so every Diploma student commutes, most often a short run west into Al Safa. The shortest school run in this group, which makes a 17:00 session realistic for a Year 12 student.

Al Safa

The densest school cluster in this part of Dubai, with British-curriculum sixth forms and one IB continuum school among them. This is where most Al Wasl Diploma students are taught, and where subject availability within a single timetable is widest.

Jumeirah 1

Established villas with long-standing British-curriculum provision close by. Strong on A Level sixth forms and thinner on Diploma provision, so an Al Wasl family set on the Diploma is usually looking at Al Safa or further west rather than here.

Umm Suqeim

Two substantial campuses including an IB continuum school, which is where the full Middle Years Programme into Diploma route is clearest within reach. The longest afternoon return in this group, which pushes weekday sessions towards 17:30.

City Walk

Low-rise apartments immediately north with no secondary campus. Students there share classes, teachers and tutors with Al Wasl students, which is the clearest demonstration that the specialist pool is the city's rather than the district's.

Jumeirah 2 and Jumeirah 3

Villas running west along the coast with primary provision nearby and secondary a slightly longer run. Widening a school search here changes the commute and the community rather than the range of Diploma subjects available.

Al Sufouh

Selective British campuses alongside IB continuum provision, twenty to thirty minutes out. Students travelling here from Al Wasl arrive at the Diploma with strong Year 11 foundations, so support is more often about pace and papers than about gaps.

Al Manara and Al Quoz

Inland, with newer campuses and a different school profile. Worth including in a school search where a specific Higher Level subject is not offered at the nearer schools, which happens more often than families expect in group six and in the less common languages.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Wasl

Al Safa and Jumeirah campuses where Al Wasl Diploma students study

Subject availability and timetable blocking differ across these schools, and so does which Higher Level combinations are possible. Ask the school for the option blocks before Year 12 begins, because an unresolvable clash is work that has to happen outside school hours.

  • Jumeirah Baccalaureate School, Al Safa
  • Jumeirah College, Al Safa
  • Jumeirah English Speaking School, Jumeirah
  • Horizon English School, Al Safa
  • Safa British School
  • Latifa School for Girls, Al Safa

Umm Suqeim, Al Sufouh and Al Barsha campuses

The second ring, with IB continuum provision and selective British sixth forms. A longer afternoon return, which is why Diploma students from these schools more often take 17:30 weekday slots or weekend morning blocks for timed papers.

  • Emirates International School Jumeirah
  • Raffles World Academy, Umm Suqeim
  • Kings' School Dubai, Umm Suqeim
  • Dubai College, Al Sufouh
  • GEMS Wellington International School, Al Sufouh
  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai

Schools are named as context for where Al Wasl students study the Diploma and which subjects are available nearby. IB Gram has no affiliation with, endorsement from or partnership with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the subject and the level, not the programme

'IB help' cannot be matched. Higher Level chemistry, Standard Level Analysis and Approaches or Theory of Knowledge can be. Add the school and the year group, because option blocking and topic sequence differ between the Al Safa, Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim campuses and both change what the first sessions should cover.

  2. 02

Send one marked paper per subject you are worried about

A marked script is data; a predicted grade is a summary. With two or three scripts a tutor can say whether this is a content problem in one subject or a command-term problem across four, and those two findings lead to completely different plans and completely different costs.

  3. 03

    A free 55-minute diagnostic lesson

No charge and no card details. The tutor works one unfamiliar past-paper question and watches the working rather than the answers, then writes a short note classifying the problem and saying which subject the first funded hour should go into. Sometimes the answer is the command-term block rather than any subject.

  4. 04

Set the protocol and the category tally

Five loss categories, applied to every paper in every subject, counted and compared week to week. This is the measurement that tells a family whether the plan is working, and it is published on this page in full so a household can run it without buying anything.

  5. 05

Review at the mock and taper into the session

Mock scripts are recounted against the first tally, the plan moves to whatever has not shifted, and paper volume reduces rather than rises in the final weeks. A funded subject that drops out because it no longer needs the hour is the intended outcome rather than a lost customer.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched on subject and level, not on distance

The shortlist for an Al Wasl student is built from tutors who have taught that subject at that level in the last two academic years. Driving distance from Al Wasl Road does not appear in the criteria, because it has no bearing on whether somebody can teach Higher Level calculus or a comparative essay.

Advice about points, not about subjects

A Diploma student is optimising a total. The marginal point is usually cheapest in a subject sitting just below a boundary with technique losses, not in the weakest subject with foundational gaps, and that is where families instinctively put the money. We say so, even when it means recommending fewer hours.

The command-term block recommended over a year of sessions

Where a diagnostic shows command-term losses spread across four subjects, three or four sessions fix all four at once. That is a smaller sale than a year of subject tutoring, and it is the honest recommendation, which is why it is written into this page rather than left to the consultation.

The core taken seriously

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay contribute up to three points and carry failing conditions, and science and mathematics students neglect them predictably. Two or three hours on the core in Year 12 is worth more in points than the same hours on a sixth subject already at a 5.

Coverage limits named by group

Higher Level physics, chemistry and Analysis and Approaches are thin; ab initio languages and group six arts subjects are thinner. The table on this page says so with realistic match times. No competitor page in the researched set discloses a coverage limit anywhere, and several route UAE parents to overseas numbers instead.

A protocol published rather than sold

The four-step past-paper method, the five loss categories and the subject-type adjustments are all set out here. A family that runs them with the school's own past-paper library will gain marks without buying anything, which we would rather publish than withhold.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Wasl: your questions answered

Does a tutor who lives near Al Wasl teach the Diploma any better?+

No, and the question is worth answering directly because the instinct behind it is reasonable. Proximity selects for willingness to drive across Dubai on a weekday afternoon, which has no relationship to whether somebody has taught Higher Level chemistry in the last two years. What it does affect is the length of your shortlist: requiring physical presence in one district removes most of the people who could help. Published Dubai in-home rates of AED 180 to 500 an hour sit above the AED 150 to 300 online band, so the proximity requirement costs money as well as choice.

Which of the six Diploma groups is hardest to find a specialist for?+

Group six, the arts, by a clear margin, because the assessment is portfolio and performance based and very few tutors have examined it. After that, ab initio and less commonly taught languages, where the pool is small and oral components need somebody who will conduct them properly rather than discuss them. Then Higher Level sciences, with physics thinnest, and Higher Level Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches. English A, economics, business management and history are reasonably well staffed, with a wide spread in quality that is difficult to judge from a profile alone.

How much harder is Higher Level than Standard Level in practice?+

In the sciences, the component weightings are identical and the extra load arrives as additional depth within the same themes plus longer papers, so the algebra gets heavier rather than the concepts getting stranger. In mathematics the two levels are substantively different courses. The difference that catches out able students is pace: more content in the same number of weeks, so a fortnight missed costs more and a topic not understood the first time is rarely revisited. Most Year 12 difficulty in this corridor is accumulation rather than difficulty, which is why early support is cheaper than late.

How many of the six subjects should we actually get help with?+

One, usually, or two in an exam year. A Diploma student carries six subjects, Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and a service commitment, and cannot absorb more than one or two tutored hours a week without displacing the independent work that produces most of the improvement. The decision about which subject should be made on where the marginal point is cheapest: a subject just below a boundary with technique losses beats the weakest subject with foundational gaps, which is the opposite of what most families choose.

What proportion of a Diploma subject grade is internally assessed?+

It varies by subject, and in the sciences it is around a fifth: the scientific investigation carries 20% of the grade while the two written papers carry 36% and 44%. Mathematics has an internally assessed exploration, economics has commentaries, the languages have oral components and the arts have portfolio work. Across six subjects that is a substantial share of a points total, and it is the part most consistently left to drift because the deadlines are internal and feel negotiable. It is also the part that rewards front-loading and resists rescue.

How many points do Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay contribute?+

Up to three, awarded from a published matrix that combines the grades achieved in the two components. Ask the school's Diploma coordinator for the current matrix rather than relying on any tutoring page, including this one. What matters for planning is the shape: strong performance in both produces the maximum, weakness in one is partly offset by strength in the other, and a sufficiently poor grade in either is a failing condition for the diploma regardless of subject points. That last part is the piece most families do not know.

Can a grade in the core stop my child getting the diploma?+

Yes. The core carries failing conditions as well as points, which means a student with a strong subject total is not automatically safe if Theory of Knowledge or the Extended Essay has gone badly. Science and mathematics students are the most exposed, for a predictable reason: Theory of Knowledge asks for an argument about how knowledge is produced and justified, which is unlike anything else on their timetable, so it gets postponed until Year 13. Ask the Diploma coordinator for the exact current conditions, and treat two or three hours of core coaching in Year 12 as insurance rather than enrichment.

What does 'evaluate' want in a Diploma answer?+

Strengths and limitations, and then a judgement. An answer that lists advantages accurately and stops will be capped, because the command term asked for an assessment rather than a description. This matters across all six subjects, since the command terms are defined the same way everywhere: 'explain' needs reasons, 'describe' needs detail without reasons, 'deduce' needs a conclusion drawn from the information given, 'determine' needs a number with its unit, and 'justify' needs the evidence behind a statement. Three or four sessions on this raises marks in every subject at once, which makes it the highest-return work available.

How should a Year 13 student mark their own papers across six subjects?+

With one protocol rather than six. Sit the paper under genuine time with no resources, mark against the published mark scheme rather than a worked solution, and assign each lost mark to one of five categories: content not known, command term misread, notation or units, missing reasoning step, arithmetic or accuracy. Count the categories across all six subjects. Then re-attempt every lost question a few days later, because marking without re-attempting measures a weakness without addressing it. The tally is the measurement that tells you whether this is a subject problem or a habit problem.

Is it better to raise one subject from 5 to 6 or two subjects from 4 to 5?+

Numerically the same, which makes the question about which is more achievable rather than which is worth more. A subject at 5 with technique losses, where the student knows the content and is losing marks to command terms, units or unshown working, is usually the cheaper point, because those are habits and habits move in weeks. A subject at 4 with foundational gaps needs teaching across months. Diagnose from marked scripts before deciding, and be wary of the instinct to put the money into the subject that worries the household most.

When should a Diploma student start past papers?+

Earlier than most do, and in smaller units. In Year 12 a past-paper section is a diagnostic rather than a rehearsal: it establishes whether the student can handle the question style and where the losses cluster, which informs the whole two-year plan. Full papers under time belong to Year 13. The volume should rise through the autumn, peak around the mocks, and then fall in the final fortnight, when the useful work is targeted repair. A student sitting three full papers a week in April is exhausting themselves for diminishing returns.

My child's predicted grades have dropped. What does that actually mean?+

It means the school's current best estimate has changed, usually on the evidence of a mock or a recent assessment, and it is a measurement rather than a verdict. The useful response is to find out what produced it: which paper, marked against which scheme, and what the losses were. A drop caused by meeting terminal conditions for the first time is a practice problem. A drop caused by content not covered after a staff change is a teaching problem. Ask the subject teacher which of those applies before buying anything, because the two need different plans.

Which Diploma subject pairs can sensibly share one tutor?+

In a few genuinely adjacent pairs, yes, and where it works the saving is real. Physics with mathematics is the clearest case, because a tutor who recognises that a physics error is actually a logarithm error fixes it in minutes rather than reteaching the physics. Chemistry with biology and economics with business management also work. The test is whether the tutor can diagnose across both, and the diagnostic lesson is where to test it. Where they cannot, two subjects with one tutor is worse than one subject done properly, and we will say so.

What is the earliest useful point to get Diploma support?+

The summer between Year 11 and Year 12, and it is the window almost nobody in this corridor uses. Six weeks on algebraic speed, quantitative fluency and timed writing removes the three most common causes of an early Diploma stumble before any of them happen, and it costs a fraction of a rescue block in Year 13. After that, the first half of Year 12 is the cheapest paid time in the course: the same hourly rate does roughly twice the work it will do eighteen months later, because foundational repair is still possible.

What happens if no specialist is available for our Higher Level subject?+

We say so and name which of three options applies. A different hour with the right specialist is usually the best outcome and the one families resist most. A tutor with an adjacent specialism, with the limitation stated openly, works for some situations and not for a Higher Level push. A short wait is sometimes simply correct. What we will not do is place a generalist into a Higher Level slot and let the family find out at the January mock, which is the outcome a proximity-driven search produces most often. No competitor page in the researched set publishes a coverage limit at all.

Answer the subject question, and the proximity question stops mattering

Send the subject and the level, the school and the year group, one marked paper per subject you are worried about, and two evening windows that survive the return journey from Al Safa, Jumeirah or Umm Suqeim. You will get a straight answer on whether that subject at that level can be covered now or within a week, a written rate per session, and a free 55-minute diagnostic lesson with no card details taken. The note afterwards will say which subject the first funded hour should go into, and sometimes it will say that three sessions on command terms across four subjects would do more than a year in any single one.
