IGCSE Maths Tutor in Al Wasl

Hiring an IGCSE maths tutor in Al Wasl usually goes wrong for one avoidable reason: three different specifications are all called IGCSE mathematics, and the schools around Al Wasl do not all enter the same one. Cambridge 0580, Cambridge 0607 and Pearson 4MA1 have different paper structures, different calculator rules and different tiering. This page sorts out which is which before anything else, then says what the remaining weeks can change.

  • Three specifications set out side by side with their routes and tiers
  • What a Core or Foundation entry does to the grade range available
  • The topic-by-topic list of where marks actually go, by paper

IB & IGCSE in Al Wasl

Find the code before you find the tutor

Al Wasl families use schools in Al Safa, Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim, and those schools do not all enter mathematics candidates with the same specification. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics is 0580. Cambridge IGCSE International Mathematics is 0607, a separate syllabus with a graphics-calculator component and an investigation, used more often by schools running an IB continuum. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A is 4MA1, with Mathematics B as a further specification. All three are routinely described as 'IGCSE maths' and they are not interchangeable at the level a tutor works at.

The practical consequence is that the past-paper library a tutor should be working from differs entirely between them. A student entered for 0607 who spends the spring term on 0580 papers is practising a different examination: the question styles differ, the calculator position differs and 0607 carries components that 0580 does not. The information needed to avoid that is one email to the head of year, asking for the specification code and the route, and it is the single highest-value message a parent will send all year.

The second thing to establish is the tier or route, because it caps the grade range. Cambridge 0580 and 0607 each run Core and Extended routes; Pearson 4MA1 runs Foundation and Higher tiers. A candidate on the lower route cannot be awarded the top grades however well they perform, and a candidate on the higher route meets content designed to stretch the strongest part of the cohort. The decision is made by the school on evidence, usually from Year 10, and the entry deadline closes it. No tutoring lifts a ceiling that was set on an entry form.

The third is the calculator position, which differs between specifications and shapes what practice should look like. Where a non-calculator paper exists, number sense and written arithmetic become examined skills rather than background habits, and a student who reaches correct answers slowly with a calculator will underperform. Where calculators are permitted throughout, the examined skill shifts towards operating the device efficiently and not rounding prematurely. Both are trainable and they are trained differently, so confirm the paper structure for your child's year of entry with the school rather than assuming it from an older past paper.

Delivery is one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not provide home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India. For mathematics the online format has a specific advantage: the student writes on a shared screen and the tutor annotates each line as it appears, which is how unshown method and early rounding get caught at the moment they happen. Published Dubai rates put qualified subject tutors working online at AED 150 to 300 an hour against AED 180 to 500 for in-home visits, and the difference is travel rather than teaching.

Four points at which an Al Wasl family meets the IGCSE mathematics decision, and what each one actually requires.

0580Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics

The most widely entered mathematics specification in British-curriculum schools in this corridor. Candidates follow either the Core route or the Extended route, which determines the papers sat and the grades available, and the current version includes both a non-calculator and a calculator paper on each route. Confirm the paper numbers and durations for your child's year of entry with the school.

Cambridge candidates in the UAE sit the June and November series. Every examination centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for the zone because it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong one. Get the zone-correct timetable from the school rather than from any website.

0607Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE International Mathematics

A separate Cambridge syllabus with Core and Extended routes, a graphics-calculator component and an investigation element, which makes it a materially different examination from 0580 rather than a variant of it. Used more often by schools with an IB continuum, because its style aligns with the Diploma's use of technology.

Within reach of Al Wasl, 0607 appears most often at the IB continuum schools in Al Safa, Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim. Families moving between schools in this corridor sometimes move between 0580 and 0607 without being told, and the practice material has to change with them. Confirm which components the school enters, because that determines whether investigation work needs its own preparation.

4MA1Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A

Two written papers with Foundation and Higher tiers, Foundation giving access to a restricted grade range and Higher to the full one. Mathematics B is a separate Pearson specification used by a smaller number of schools. Both report on a 9 to 1 scale.

Pearson International GCSE examinations are available in May/June and November each year. The November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026 with results reaching students in January; November 2025 results arrived on 22 January 2026 and June 2026 results reached students on 20 August 2026. Pearson publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, so work from the live official document.

What IGCSE mathematics leads into

A Levels or the IB Diploma, both available in this corridor. Both assume higher-route content and neither reteaches it: the algebra, the graph work and the manipulation all reappear at speed in Year 12. Diploma Analysis and Approaches assumes it comfortably rather than approximately, because of its non-calculator paper.

The practical consequence for an Al Wasl family is that the mathematics tier decision in Year 10 has a four-year shadow. A Core or Foundation entry is sufficient for some sixth-form routes and an obstacle for Higher Level sciences and for Analysis and Approaches. Ask the intended sixth form what it requires in writing rather than relying on what is assumed at the school gate.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Mathematics at IGCSE carries more than its own grade, because the other subjects draw on it. These are the subjects in play and what each takes from it.

Mathematics

Cambridge 0580, Cambridge 0607 or Pearson 4MA1

Algebra, number, geometry, trigonometry, statistics and probability, with routes that cap or open the grade range. The attainment that matters beyond the grade is speed: a student who manipulates an expression slowly loses marks in the sciences as well, and that is not visible in the mathematics grade itself.

Additional Mathematics

Cambridge 0606 · Pearson Further Pure 4PM1

An extra qualification taken alongside the main one at some schools, introducing calculus and more advanced algebra. Useful preparation for A Level mathematics or Diploma Analysis and Approaches, and a genuine additional workload in an examination year. Worth taking only where the main specification is already secure.

Physics

Cambridge 0625 · Pearson 4PH1

The subject most exposed to weak mathematics. Rearranging formulae, handling standard form, reading gradients and converting units are assumed throughout, and students lose physics marks for mathematical reasons they cannot identify. One block of algebra work raises marks in both subjects at once.

Chemistry

Cambridge 0620 · Pearson 4CH1

The quantitative chain from moles to concentration to titration arithmetic depends on proportional reasoning and unit discipline. A student who is slow with ratios will be slow with moles, and the symptom presents as a chemistry problem. Diagnosing across both subjects is often what shortens a plan.

Biology

Cambridge 0610 · Pearson 4BI1

Less mathematically demanding than the other two sciences, with data interpretation, percentage change and graph reading as the recurring requirements. Students who find those hard in biology almost always find them hard in mathematics, and the efficient fix is in the mathematics session rather than the biology one.

Business and Economics

Cambridge 0450 and 0455 · Pearson 4BS1 and 4EC1

Percentage work, ratio, index numbers and graph interpretation appear throughout, and the calculation questions are often the most reliably available marks on the paper. Students who avoid them because they regard themselves as non-mathematical are leaving accessible marks, which is a confidence problem with a technical fix.

Geography

Cambridge 0460 · Pearson 4GE1

Statistical and graphical skills carry a steady share of marks, including interpretation of data presented in unfamiliar forms. The same graph-reading work that serves physics and mathematics serves geography, which makes it one of the highest-transfer blocks available to a candidate taking several of these subjects.

Computer Science and ICT

Cambridge 0478 and 0417 · Pearson 4IT1

Logic, binary and algorithmic thinking draw on mathematical reasoning rather than on specific mathematical content. Students sometimes do not know which of the two syllabuses they are entered for, which matters because the content and the assessment differ substantially between them.

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies

KHDA requirement · all Dubai private schools

Mandatory in every Dubai private school whatever curriculum is licensed, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab pupils and prescribed languages of instruction. They occupy real homework hours in an examination year, which any mathematics practice schedule has to be built around rather than on top of.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Four arrangements for IGCSE mathematics, chosen by what the marked script shows rather than by preference. All run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time with the working annotated on a shared screen.

Weekly fluency work, short and frequent

The right purchase where speed rather than knowledge is the problem, which is most students in this corridor. Algebraic rearrangement, fractions, indices, ratio and number sense drilled until they are automatic, with timed sets each week. Two half-length sessions often beat one long one, because automaticity is built by frequency.

  • Timed sets each week, measured in speed rather than topics covered
  • Non-calculator arithmetic drilled where the specification examines it
  • Written note after each session with the next two priorities

A marked-paper block

For a student who knows the content and loses marks in the paper. Papers from the correct specification and route, sat under time, marked against the published mark scheme with each loss categorised, and every lost question re-attempted days later. This is the arrangement families most often need and least often ask for.

  • Papers from the exact code and route the school entered
  • Losses categorised rather than scored
  • Every lost question re-attempted a few days afterwards

Topic repair against the school's sequence

For a genuine content gap, usually after a staff change, a move between schools or an extended absence. The session follows the school's own scheme of work so the hour repairs live material, and the school's topic list is requested before the second session rather than assumed.

  • Planned from the school's scheme of work, not the specification order
  • One topic at a time, with a retrieval check opening each session
  • Ends when the gap closes rather than running on by default

Tier and entry consultation in Year 10

A single diagnostic aimed at the decision rather than the term: whether the Core or Foundation placement looks right, what evidence the school is using, and what would need to change before the entry closes. The highest-value session available in the two years and the one almost nobody buys.

  • Run before the entry deadline, not after it
  • Based on the student's own marked work rather than predictions
  • A written view the parent can take to the school

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Wasl

01

Three specifications, one subject name

Exactly one syllabus code appeared across the entire seven-page area cluster researched for this project, which is a striking omission in a market where three different mathematics specifications are in use within a few minutes of each other. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics is 0580. Cambridge IGCSE International Mathematics is 0607, with a graphics-calculator component and an investigation element that 0580 does not have. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A is 4MA1, with Mathematics B as a further specification used by a smaller number of schools.

The table below sets the three out. The column that matters most for an Al Wasl family is the last one, because the honest position on paper structures is that they are revised periodically and a family should confirm the current arrangement for their child's year of entry rather than inferring it from a past paper found online. What does not change is that the three specifications examine differently, that the question styles differ, and that practice material has to come from the right one.

The failure this prevents is specific and common. A student entered for 0607 who works through 0580 papers all spring is preparing for a different examination, and the mismatch is usually discovered at a mock when the paper looks unfamiliar. The same happens in reverse, and it happens routinely to students who change schools mid-course within this corridor. One email to the head of year, asking for the specification code, the route and which papers the school enters, removes the risk entirely and costs nothing.

Routes and tiers: what the entry decides about the grade

This is the most consequential thing on a Year 10 option form and the least explained to parents. Each of the three specifications runs two routes. Cambridge 0580 and 0607 split into Core and Extended; Pearson 4MA1 splits into Foundation and Higher. The route determines which papers a candidate sits, what content they are taught, and critically which grades they can be awarded. A candidate on the lower route cannot reach the top grades however well they perform on the day, and that is a feature of the system rather than a marking decision.

Two errors follow from this and both are avoidable. A student placed on the lower route who was capable of the higher one carries a ceiling into sixth form, where A Level and Diploma mathematics and science courses assume higher-route content and do not reteach it. A student placed on the higher route who is not ready loses marks across papers written to stretch the strongest candidates, and frequently ends with a lower grade than the lower route would have produced. Neither is carelessness by the school; both come from evidence that was thin when the decision was made.

What a parent can do takes two emails and should be sent in Year 10 rather than Year 11. Ask which route the child is currently on, what evidence the placement rests on, and when the window to change it closes, because the entry deadline sits months before the papers. Then ask the intended sixth form what it requires in writing, since assumptions made at the school gate about what is sufficient for a science or mathematics A Level are frequently wrong. Both answers are free and both are worth more than a term of tutoring bought for the wrong reason.

Which specification the schools around Al Wasl actually enter

  • The specification is set by the school, not by the district
  • British-curriculum campuses here most often enter 0580 or 4MA1
  • IB continuum schools are where 0607 is most likely to appear
  • A school move within this corridor can change the examination silently

This is the part of the neighbourhood comparison that is worth researching, as distinct from the part that is not. Tutor supply does not vary between Al Wasl, Al Safa, Jumeirah and City Walk, because the four districts share a road network and the same cluster of schools. What does vary is which mathematics examination a child will sit, and that is determined entirely by the school rather than by the address. Two families living a street apart can have children on 0580 Extended and 0607 Core respectively, with different papers, different content lists and different grade ranges.

The pattern across this corridor is broadly predictable without being reliable enough to assume. The British-curriculum campuses in Al Safa and Jumeirah most often enter Cambridge 0580 or Pearson 4MA1. The IB continuum schools, including the one in Al Safa and those in Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim, are where Cambridge 0607 International Mathematics is most likely to appear, because its use of graphing technology aligns with the Diploma's approach. The selective campuses further west are more likely to offer an additional mathematics qualification alongside the main entry.

Where this matters practically is in school moves, which are common in this corridor. A student moving between two schools a few minutes apart can move between specifications without anyone flagging it, and the practice material, the topic sequence and sometimes the route all change. A parent making such a move should ask the receiving school for the code, the route and the papers entered, and should expect a short period of adjustment that is not a decline in ability. Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places, so moves of this kind are likely to become more rather than less frequent.

04

Where IGCSE mathematics marks are actually lost

Mathematics losses are more predictable than in any other subject, which makes diagnosis fast and makes a marked script far more useful than a predicted grade. The table below lists the recurring ones with the topic area they sit in and the fix. Read it with a script in front of you: almost every student in this corridor will show three or four of these patterns and none of the others, and the three or four are the whole plan.

Two of them deserve emphasis because they are mistaken for ability problems. The first is unshown method. Mark schemes award method marks for identifiable written steps, so a student who works mentally and records only an answer forfeits credit even when the answer is right, and in a multi-step question that can be most of the marks. Parents reading a low mark on a script full of correct answers reasonably conclude the marking was harsh. It was not; the working was not there to credit.

The second is speed. A student who reaches correct answers slowly will run out of time on a paper designed for somebody who reaches them quickly, and the symptom is unanswered questions at the end rather than wrong answers in the middle. That is not a knowledge gap and no amount of reteaching fixes it. It is fixed by timed sets on routine technique until rearrangement, fractions, indices and ratio work are automatic, which is a matter of frequency over weeks rather than of explanation.

05

The non-calculator problem, and what number sense really means

  • A non-calculator paper makes arithmetic an examined skill, not a background one
  • The list is short and closed: tables, fractions, conversions, index laws, roots, estimation
  • Estimation catches misplaced decimals, which are among the cheapest marks on the paper
  • Ten self-marked minutes a day for a term does not require a paid tutor

Where a specification includes a paper sat without a calculator, number work becomes an examined skill rather than a background habit, and this catches out a particular kind of student: the one who understands the mathematics perfectly and has outsourced all arithmetic since Year 7. That student can explain how to find a reverse percentage and cannot carry out the division. Their understanding is genuine and their mark is low, and the gap is entirely repairable with practice that most students regard as beneath them.

Number sense in practical terms is a small, closed list: times tables to automaticity, fraction arithmetic including mixed numbers, decimal and fraction conversion, index laws, square and cube numbers and roots, and the ability to estimate an answer well enough to notice when a result is implausible. That last item is the most valuable and the least taught. A student who estimates before calculating catches the misplaced decimal point and the wrong-order-of-magnitude answer, which are among the cheapest marks available on any paper.

The way to build it is unglamorous and does not require a tutor. Ten minutes of mental arithmetic daily, written down, self-marked, for a term. Families can run that themselves and most do not, which is why it reliably appears as a finding in a diagnostic session. A tutor is genuinely useful for diagnosing which part of the list is weak, because a student cannot see their own gap, and then for checking progress every few weeks. Paying for weekly hours to drill times tables is not a sensible use of AED 150 to 300, and we will say so.

06

What a Year 11 mathematics plan looks like with eight weeks left

  • Count the usable weeks honestly; eight calendar weeks is usually five or six
  • Three strands in parallel: daily number work, one weekly timed paper, one session
  • Work the dominant loss category, not the topic that produced the most errors
  • Name the two topic areas being abandoned, in writing

Eight calendar weeks is usually five or six usable ones once the mock fortnight, a school trip, the mandatory Arabic and Islamic Education homework and any family travel are deducted. A plan built on eight will fail in week four and the household will conclude the student did not try. A plan built on five that names what is being abandoned will hold. For mathematics specifically the abandonment decision is easier than in other subjects, because the mark distribution across topics is knowable: a student can be told which two topic areas to leave alone.

The shape that works has three strands running in parallel rather than in sequence. Ten minutes of number and algebra practice daily, self-marked, because fluency is built by frequency and cannot be blocked. One timed paper a week on a weekend morning, marked against the published mark scheme for the correct specification and route, with every lost question re-attempted a few days later. And one weekly session, if one is funded, working the loss category that dominated the previous week's paper rather than the topic that produced the most errors.

That last distinction is what separates a plan from a revision timetable. If a student lost fourteen marks and eleven of them were unshown method or arithmetic slips, the next session is about method and arithmetic regardless of which topics those marks happened to sit in. Topic-led revision in the final weeks spreads effort evenly across a specification and consolidates nothing. Category-led revision concentrates it on the three or four habits that are costing marks everywhere, and those habits change within weeks once they are named and counted.

07

What you are actually buying, and what it costs

  • The paid hour buys diagnosis, marking and correction of working; the rest is free
  • Market bands: AED 150-300 qualified online, AED 180-500 in-home with travel
  • Bestimate's mid-market monthly estimate for a weekly hour: AED 600-1,200
  • Email the head of mathematics before buying anything

The useful way to think about the spend in this subject is to ask what the paid hour does that a free hour cannot. For mathematics the answer is narrow and specific: it diagnoses, it marks, and it corrects working as it is produced. Everything else a family can do alone. Daily number practice is free. Past papers are available through the school. A mark scheme is published. What is not free is somebody looking at one student's working and naming the three habits costing them marks, and then checking in a fortnight whether those habits have changed.

Priced against the market, that is a modest and defined purchase. Published Dubai bands put qualified subject tutors working online at AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors advertising IGCSE from AED 150, specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above with TutorChase at AED 270 and BartyED at AED 650, and budget online provision at AED 33 to 52 from Tutopiya and AED 45 to 65 from EdFlik. In-home one-to-one is quoted at AED 180 to 350 in Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table and AED 200 to 500 by independent home tutors. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market. Those are published figures belonging to the named companies, and KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that Dubai private school fees would not rise for 2026-27.

Before any of that, establish what the school provides. Dubai private schools are fee-paying and well resourced, and most run mathematics clinics, lunchtime help, after-school sessions and past-paper libraries. One email to the head of mathematics asking what exists and whether the child is on an intervention list changes the budget more than any rate negotiation will. A family that uses the free provision for content and buys one paid hour for diagnosis and marking spends a fraction of what a four-hour weekly arrangement costs and gets more from it.

08

Online delivery, availability and the claims we decline

  • Online, one-to-one, Gulf Standard Time; UAE home visits are not offered
  • Annotated working on a shared screen is what changes a method habit
  • Matches usually possible in two or three days; 0607 is the narrower pool
  • No accreditation claimed, no UAE premises, no guaranteed grades

Lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, with the student writing on a shared screen and the tutor annotating each line as it appears. IB Gram does not provide home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India. For mathematics the online format is better rather than merely cheaper, because the object being corrected is the working, and an annotated page persists and can be revisited the following week while a spoken correction across a table does not.

Availability in IGCSE mathematics is the most comfortable of any subject we cover: a match on the correct specification and route is usually possible within two or three days, including at Extended or Higher tier. The exceptions are a narrow weekday window in February and March, when the 17:00 to 19:00 slots fill across Al Wasl, Al Safa, Jumeirah and City Walk simultaneously, and Cambridge 0607 where the pool is smaller because fewer schools enter it. Where we cannot cover a request we say so and name the alternative rather than substituting a tutor prepared for a different specification.

The claims declined. IB Gram is not approved, accredited, certified or licensed by KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge or Pearson; a KHDA educational services permit belongs to training institutes with premises and we hold none. There is no IB Gram office, centre or branch in the UAE. Private tuition in the UAE requires a MoHRE work permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years, and tutoring without one carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws with no published schedule of amounts, so none is quoted. We do not reproduce or supply syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables; we reference them and link the official source. Every examination date must come from the school and the board's own timetable for the correct administrative zone. And no tutor can guarantee a grade.

Where we tutor

Which mathematics specification each district near Al Wasl tends to enter

The meaningful difference between Al Wasl and the districts around it, for a mathematics family, is which specification the local schools enter. Tutor supply is shared across the whole corridor. These are the areas.

Al Wasl

Villas and compounds with no substantial secondary campus, so the specification depends entirely on the school chosen. The shortest school run in this group, which makes both a 17:00 weekday session and a weekend morning paper realistic without a long journey either way.

Al Safa

The densest school cluster in this part of Dubai, with British-curriculum campuses and one IB continuum school. Both Cambridge specifications and Pearson appear across these schools, so two neighbours in Al Safa can have children sitting different mathematics examinations in the same week.

Jumeirah 1

Long-established British-curriculum provision where specification choices have been stable for years. That stability is genuinely useful: parents already in the community know which code is used and which tier conventions apply, which makes the information easy to confirm.

Jumeirah 2 and Jumeirah 3

Villas running west with primary provision nearby and secondary a slightly longer run. The specification is settled by the destination school rather than by the home address, which is why a move within the corridor can change a child's examination without anybody mentioning it.

City Walk

Low-rise apartments immediately north with no secondary campus. Students there sit the same mathematics papers as Al Wasl students because they attend the same schools, which is the clearest illustration that the district is not the variable that matters here.

Umm Suqeim

Two substantial campuses including an IB continuum school, and the district where Cambridge 0607 International Mathematics is most likely to appear rather than 0580. The longest afternoon return in this group, pushing weekday sessions towards 17:30.

Al Sufouh

Selective British campuses alongside IB continuum provision, twenty to thirty minutes out. Students here more often take an additional mathematics qualification alongside the main one, which changes the shape of a Year 11 workload considerably.

Al Manara and Al Quoz

Inland, with newer campuses and a different school profile. Relevant to a mathematics family mainly where a specific specification or an additional mathematics option is wanted and is not available at the nearer schools.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Wasl

Al Safa and Jumeirah campuses, the shortest run from Al Wasl

Both Cambridge specifications and Pearson appear across this cluster and some schools split boards between mathematics and the sciences. Ask for the code, the route and the paper structure for your child's year of entry, and for the entry deadline in writing.

  • Jumeirah English Speaking School, Jumeirah
  • Jumeirah College, Al Safa
  • Jumeirah Primary School, Al Safa
  • Horizon English School, Al Safa
  • Safa British School
  • Latifa School for Girls, Al Safa

Umm Suqeim, Al Sufouh and Al Barsha campuses

The second ring, with IB continuum provision where Cambridge 0607 is more common, alongside selective British sixth forms where an additional mathematics qualification is more likely to be offered. Confirm both with the school rather than assuming from the school type.

  • Jumeirah Baccalaureate School, Al Safa
  • Emirates International School Jumeirah
  • Raffles World Academy, Umm Suqeim
  • Kings' School Dubai, Umm Suqeim
  • Dubai College, Al Sufouh
  • Dubai English Speaking College

Schools are named as context for the mathematics specifications used within the Al Wasl catchment. Entries change year to year and must be confirmed with the school; IB Gram has no affiliation with, endorsement from or partnership with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Email the school for the code and the route

Cambridge 0580, Cambridge 0607 or Pearson 4MA1, and whether the entry is Core, Extended, Foundation or Higher. Ask which papers are entered and which permit a calculator for your child's year of entry. One message, and it determines every past paper the student should be working from for the rest of the course.

  2. 02

Ask what the school already provides

Mathematics clinics, lunchtime help, after-school sessions, a past-paper library, and whether your child is on an intervention list. Most Dubai schools run more than parents realise, because it was announced once in September. This frequently removes a third of the intended spend before any tutor is hired.

  3. 03

Send one marked paper with the working visible

Not a predicted grade. A marked script shows whether the losses are method marks, arithmetic, misread question types, diagram habits or timing, and those five lead to different plans. If nothing has been sat under time, that is the finding and the first purchase is a paper and a mark scheme.

  4. 04

    A free 55-minute diagnostic lesson

No charge and no card details. The tutor gives routine technique under time and one multi-step question, watches the working line by line, then writes a short note naming the three habits costing marks and saying what five or six usable weeks can realistically change.

  5. 05

Run three strands and taper at the end

Ten self-marked minutes of number and algebra daily, one timed paper on a weekend morning marked by loss category, and one weekly session on the dominant category. Volume falls rather than rises in the last fortnight. All three are published above, so a family can run them without buying anything.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The code established before the first session

Exactly one syllabus code appeared across the entire seven-page area cluster researched for this project. A student entered for 0607 working through 0580 papers is preparing a different examination, and that mismatch is usually discovered at a mock. We ask for the code, the route and the papers entered before planning anything.

The route conversation parents are not having

Core and Foundation entries cap the grade range and cast a shadow over sixth-form mathematics and science options. We set out what to ask the school, what evidence the placement rests on and when the window closes, because no teaching lifts a ceiling that was set on an entry form.

Diagnosis from the working, not the answers

Mark schemes credit written steps, so a student who works mentally forfeits method marks even when the answer is right. On a shared screen the tutor annotates each line as it appears, which catches the skipped step at the moment it is skipped rather than after a paper is marked.

Category-led revision rather than topic-led

If eleven of fourteen lost marks were unshown method and arithmetic slips, the next session is about method and arithmetic whatever topics those marks sat in. Topic-led revision in the final weeks spreads effort evenly and consolidates nothing, which is why the loss categories are published on this page.

The free work named as free

Daily number practice, past papers from the school, published mark schemes and the school's own clinics cost nothing. The paid hour buys diagnosis, marking and correction of working, and we would rather say that plainly than sell four weekly hours to a family who needed one.

Coverage and limits stated

IGCSE mathematics is our most comfortable subject for availability, usually matched in two or three days, with Cambridge 0607 the narrower pool and February evenings the tight window. We hold no regulator or board accreditation, have no UAE premises, and quote no examination date that has not come from the board.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Wasl: your questions answered

Which IGCSE mathematics specification is my child entered for?+

Ask the head of year or the mathematics department, because three are in use within a few minutes of Al Wasl and the answer is not inferable from the school type. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics is 0580, Cambridge IGCSE International Mathematics is 0607, and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A is 4MA1, with Mathematics B as a further Pearson specification. Ask for the code, the route, and which papers are entered for your child's year of entry. That single email determines every past paper the student should work from for the remainder of the course.

Our school entered 0607 rather than 0580. What changes for us?+

They are separate syllabuses rather than variants. 0580 is the standard Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics specification and the one most widely entered by British-curriculum schools in this corridor. 0607, International Mathematics, includes a graphics-calculator component and an investigation element, and is used more often by schools running an IB continuum because its approach to technology aligns with the Diploma's. The question styles differ, the practice material differs, and a student prepared for one is not prepared for the other. Confirm which components your school enters, since that determines whether investigation work needs its own preparation.

Is a calculator allowed in every IGCSE mathematics paper?+

No, and the position differs between specifications and has been revised over time, so confirm the current arrangement for your child's year of entry with the school rather than assuming it from an older past paper. Where a non-calculator paper exists, arithmetic becomes an examined skill: times tables, fraction work, conversions, index laws, roots and estimation all have to be automatic. Where calculators are permitted throughout, the examined skill shifts towards operating the device efficiently and not rounding prematurely. Both are trainable, and they are trained differently, which is why the paper structure has to be established first.

What grade can a Core or Foundation candidate actually be awarded?+

A restricted range: the top grades are not attainable on the lower route in any of these specifications. That is a feature of tiering rather than a marking decision, and it is set when the entry is made. The practical consequence reaches well beyond the certificate, because A Level and IB Diploma mathematics and science courses assume higher-route content and do not reteach it. If the placement now looks wrong, the conversation with the school is about the evidence and the entry deadline, which sits months before the papers. A tutor cannot raise a ceiling fixed on an entry form.

Can the tier still be changed in Year 11?+

Sometimes, with the school's agreement and before the entry deadline, which is the governing date and sits months ahead of the examinations. Ask the mathematics department three things: which route the child is on, what evidence the placement rested on, and when the window closes. Bring a marked script rather than an opinion, because that is the evidence the department works from. If the deadline has passed the honest answer is that the route is fixed for this series, and the remaining options are to maximise within it or to consider the next series.

Which mathematics topics cost students in this corridor the most marks?+

Algebraic manipulation first, where sign errors and faulty rearrangement recur because intermediate steps are not written. Then fraction, index and surd arithmetic, where the method is right and the number work fails. Then ratio, proportion and reverse percentage, where the question type is misread rather than the mathematics misunderstood. Then trigonometry and geometry, where the diagram was not drawn or labelled. Statistics procedures are usually half remembered rather than unknown. Almost every student shows three or four of these patterns and none of the others, which makes a marked script the fastest diagnostic available.

Does the IGCSE mathematics grade decide whether the Diploma is possible?+

The grade matters less than the route and the speed. Both Diploma mathematics courses assume higher-route content, and Analysis and Approaches assumes it comfortably because one of its papers is sat without a calculator. A strong grade obtained slowly is a warning rather than a reassurance, since the Diploma moves faster and allows less revisiting. Ask the sixth form what it requires in writing, subject by subject, rather than relying on assumptions, because requirements differ between schools and between the two Diploma mathematics courses.

How much mathematics does a student need before Higher Level sciences?+

More than the science syllabuses state, because they assume rather than teach it. Rearranging a formula with three variables quickly, handling standard form, reading a gradient, converting units and working with proportional relationships all appear in Diploma physics and chemistry from the first term, often before the mathematics course has covered them formally. A student who does these slowly will lose science marks that look like science gaps. One block of algebra work in the summer before Year 12 raises marks in two or three subjects at once, which makes it the best-value mathematics work available.

Should an Al Wasl student add Additional Mathematics in Year 11?+

Only where the main entry is already secure, and then it is genuinely useful. Cambridge 0606 and the Pearson Further Pure specification introduce calculus and more advanced algebra, which is good preparation for A Level mathematics or Diploma Analysis and Approaches. The cost is real workload in an examination year already carrying eight to ten subjects. A student struggling with the main specification should not be taking an additional one, and a student comfortable with it will find the extra content eases the transition at sixteen considerably.

How do we practise number sense without a calculator?+

Ten minutes a day, written down and self-marked, for a term. The list is short and closed: times tables to automaticity, fraction arithmetic including mixed numbers, decimal and fraction conversion, index laws, square and cube numbers and their roots, and estimating an answer well enough to notice an implausible result. That last item is the most valuable and the least taught, because estimation catches the misplaced decimal point and the wrong order of magnitude. None of this requires a paid tutor, and paying AED 150 to 300 an hour to drill times tables is not a sensible purchase.

What should eight weeks of mathematics work actually contain?+

Three strands in parallel rather than in sequence, built on five or six usable weeks once the mock fortnight, trips, mandatory Arabic and Islamic Education homework and travel are deducted. Ten self-marked minutes of number and algebra practice daily, because fluency is built by frequency and cannot be blocked. One timed paper a week on a weekend morning, from the correct specification and route, marked against the published mark scheme with each loss categorised and every lost question re-attempted days later. And one weekly session on whichever loss category dominated the previous paper.

Is one mathematics session a week enough in Year 11?+

For most students, yes, and the shape matters more than the count. Where speed rather than knowledge is the problem, two half-length sessions often outperform one long one, because automaticity comes from frequency. What makes a single weekly session sufficient is what happens between them: ten minutes of daily practice and one marked paper a week. A student who does neither of those will not progress on three sessions a week either, which is why the first diagnostic establishes whether the household can sustain the independent work before more hours are recommended.

Do the schools near Al Wasl all use the same mathematics specification?+

No, and that is the one genuine difference between the districts around Al Wasl. The British-curriculum campuses in Al Safa and Jumeirah most often enter Cambridge 0580 or Pearson 4MA1, while the IB continuum schools in Al Safa, Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim are where Cambridge 0607 is most likely to appear. Two families living a street apart can have children sitting different examinations with different content lists. A move between schools within this corridor can therefore change the specification without anybody flagging it, so ask the receiving school for the code and the route.

Should we use a tutor or just a past-paper schedule?+

Both, in that order of importance. The past-paper schedule does the work: papers from the correct specification and route, sat under time, marked against the published mark scheme, with every lost question re-attempted days later. The tutor does what the schedule cannot, which is look at one student's working and name the three habits costing marks, because a student cannot see their own skipped steps. A family that runs the schedule and buys one hour for diagnosis and marking spends a fraction of a four-hour weekly arrangement and usually gets more from it.

What is the cheapest way to raise an IGCSE mathematics mark?+

In order: email the head of mathematics and use the clinics and past-paper provision the school already runs; start ten self-marked minutes of number and algebra practice daily; sit one timed paper a week from the correct specification and mark it by loss category rather than for a score; then buy one diagnostic hour to have the three dominant habits named. That sequence costs very little and addresses the things that actually move a mathematics mark. It is also the sequence most providers will not recommend, because three of the four steps involve not paying anybody.

Get the code, then get the diagnosis

Send the specification code and the route from the school, the year group, and one marked paper with the working visible rather than a predicted grade. Tell us what the mathematics department already provides. The first 55-minute lesson carries no charge and takes no card details, and in it the tutor will give routine technique under time plus one multi-step question, watch the working line by line, and write a short note naming the three habits costing marks. The three strands and the loss categories are published above, so a family that would rather run them alone with the school's past papers can do exactly that.
