IB Chemistry Tutor in Al Wasl

An IB chemistry tutor in Al Wasl is usually called in for one of three reasons: energetics and equilibrium have stopped making sense, Paper 1 keeps coming back lower than the student expected, or the scientific investigation has stalled. All three are syllabus problems with syllabus answers. IB Gram matches Al Wasl students to Chemistry specialists at Higher or Standard Level, one-to-one over live video, on Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Al Wasl

Chemistry is the subject where understanding and marks separate most

Diploma Chemistry produces a specific and frustrating pattern. Students who can describe a reaction mechanism accurately, who can explain why an equilibrium shifts, who clearly understand the chemistry, come back from a paper with a 4 or a 5. Their parents in Al Wasl reasonably conclude that something is wrong with the teaching or with the effort. Usually neither is true. The gap is in conversion: the student knows the chemistry and does not know what the mark scheme is paying for.

That is not a vague complaint. It is specific and it is diagnosable from a marked script in about twenty minutes. Paper 1 is multiple choice, and the losses there are overwhelmingly on the quantitative items, where a student who could do the calculation with working guesses it without. Paper 2 rewards answers that state the assumption the student has silently made, that give the sign on an enthalpy change, that carry units through and quote significant figures consistently. The scientific investigation is marked against criteria that students frequently have not read, with the heaviest losses in the evaluation.

The syllabus itself has a shape worth understanding too, because it changes how revision should be organised. Chemistry is built around two organising concepts, structure and reactivity, with the content threaded through them rather than presented as a list of separate topics. That structure is an advantage for a student who uses it: a question about why a reaction happens is usually a question about structure in disguise, and recognising that saves time under pressure.

This page therefore works through the subject rather than around it. Component by component, what each one is testing and where the marks go. The topics that cost most, with the specific error in each. The data booklet, which is provided in every paper and routinely ignored. Paper 1 and Paper 2 treated as separate skills. The investigation, criterion by criterion. How practical work is handled when tuition is online. And the cost picture in dirhams, with sources, because nobody else in this market publishes it.

On delivery and scheduling, two plain statements. IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE addresses; home visits are a service we run in India only. Chemistry teaching for Al Wasl families happens one-to-one over live video with a shared workspace, which handles mechanisms, structures and calculations well because both people can draw. And the Al Wasl week has real constraints in it: schools in this cluster finish between roughly 2.30pm and 3.15pm, Al Wasl Road is slow from four to six, and the mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies lessons KHDA requires occupy periods and generate homework of their own. A session placed without accounting for any of that is the one that gets cancelled, and a cancelled session in a cumulative subject costs more than a missed hour.

Diploma Chemistry, Higher and Standard Level

A group four science assessed through two written papers and a scientific investigation. Higher Level carries additional content and longer papers; Standard Level covers the common core. Both are organised around structure and reactivity, and both provide a data booklet and periodic table in every examination.

Al Wasl students take Chemistry at the IB continuum schools in Al Safa and Umm Suqeim or after switching from IGCSE at sixteen. International Baccalaureate students made up around seven per cent of Dubai private enrolment in the 2024-25 KHDA figures, so Higher Level Chemistry cohorts at any single school here are small, which is exactly why a local specialist is hard to find.

SELECTAges 15-16 · Year 11

Choosing Chemistry at Higher Level

The level decision, made before the Diploma starts. Higher Level Chemistry is a requirement or a strong preference for medicine, pharmacy, chemical engineering and several biosciences, which means it is frequently chosen for destination rather than for enjoyment. That is a legitimate reason and a reason to check the workload honestly first.

Families in the Al Wasl catchment often make this decision alongside the choice between A Levels and the Diploma, since several schools here offer both. Taking Higher Level Chemistry and two other Higher Level sciences is a heavy combination that a Year 11 student rarely has the information to assess.

MYPAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

MYP Sciences, the year before

Criterion-assessed science covering the three disciplines, strong on investigation design and lighter on quantitative work than the Diploma assumes. Students arriving from MYP generally handle the scientific investigation well and find moles calculations and energetics harder than expected.

MYP sciences are taught at the IB continuum schools within a short drive of Al Wasl. The useful intervention for an MYP student heading into Diploma Chemistry is quantitative: moles, concentration and stoichiometry practised to fluency over the summer before Diploma 1 begins.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Chemistry, the other entry route

Cambridge 0620 or Pearson Edexcel 4CH1, at Core or Extended tier. Students from this route arrive with solid calculation technique and structured exam habits, and meet two unfamiliar things in Diploma Chemistry: mechanisms explained rather than recalled, and a research investigation they design themselves.

Most of the Jumeirah-side secondaries around Al Wasl run IGCSE Chemistry before the post-16 split. An Extended-tier grade with comfortable moles work is the realistic preparation for Higher Level Chemistry; a Core entry is not, and that is a Year 10 conversation rather than a Year 12 one.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The Chemistry topics that produce the most tutoring requests from Al Wasl families, each with the error that actually costs the marks rather than a general note on difficulty.

Stoichiometry and the mole concept

HL and SL

The arithmetic foundation of the subject. Losses come from limiting-reagent questions answered on the wrong reactant and from percentage-yield work where the theoretical yield was computed from the excess rather than the limiting species.

Energetics and thermochemistry

HL and SL

Enthalpy sign conventions and Hess cycles. The most common single error in the subject is an enthalpy change given with the wrong sign, which the scheme treats as a wrong answer however correct the magnitude.

Chemical kinetics

HL more deeply

Rate equations, orders of reaction and the Arrhenius relationship at Higher Level. Students read graphs correctly and omit the statement of units on the rate constant, which is a required part of the answer.

Equilibrium

HL and SL

Le Chatelier reasoning is usually sound; the equilibrium constant calculations are where marks go, particularly when initial rather than equilibrium concentrations are substituted into the expression.

Acids and bases

HL and SL

pH and weak-acid calculations, buffers and titration curves at Higher Level. Losses cluster in the approximations: students apply a weak-acid assumption without stating it, and the scheme wants the assumption named.

Redox processes and electrochemistry

HL and SL

Half-equations, cell potentials and electrolysis. Standard electrode potentials sit in the data booklet, and students who do not use it reliably lose marks on questions designed to be answered with it.

Organic chemistry and mechanisms

HL more deeply

Nucleophilic substitution, elimination and electrophilic addition. Curly arrows must start and end in the right places, and a mechanism with correct products and sloppy arrows scores below one with careful arrows.

Atomic structure and periodicity

HL and SL

Ionisation energy trends and electron configuration. Explanation questions here are answered with a restated trend rather than a reason, which is the single most repeated pattern in Paper 2 across the sciences.

Bonding and structure

HL and SL

Intermolecular forces and shapes of molecules. Boiling-point comparison questions need the specific force named and the reason given, not simply an assertion that one molecule is more polar.

Data processing and uncertainties

HL and SL

Propagating uncertainty and quoting significant figures consistently. These marks appear in both papers and in the investigation, and they are among the easiest in the subject to recover with deliberate practice.

The scientific investigation

HL and SL

A student-designed investigation marked against criteria. The research question is usually too broad, which quietly limits several criteria at once, and the evaluation is treated as an apology rather than an analysis.

Data booklet and periodic table technique

HL and SL

Provided in every paper and genuinely examinable. Students who have never practised finding a value under time pressure lose marks on questions written specifically to be answered from the booklet.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of Chemistry support, all delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time in a shared workspace where both people can draw structures and mechanisms.

Weekly work through the two years

One tutor, one weekly slot, running across Diploma 1 and 2. Chemistry is cumulative: energetics assumes stoichiometry, equilibrium assumes energetics, and organic mechanisms assume bonding. A gap left in Diploma 1 reappears as an apparently unrelated failure a year later, which is why sustained work beats intensive rescue.

  • 60 or 90 minutes at a fixed weekly time
  • Aligned to the school's own sequence and laboratory schedule
  • Data booklet practice built into calculation work
  • Written notes after each session

Investigation coaching

A short block around the scientific investigation: narrowing the research question until it is answerable with the apparatus available, reading the criteria properly, and feedback on the student's own draft given as questions. The tutor does not write, rewrite or complete any part of it, and makes that explicit to the student.

  • Research question narrowed to what the equipment allows
  • Criteria read line by line against the draft
  • Uncertainty treatment checked, not supplied
  • Deadlines mapped to the school's internal calendar

Paper programme before the May session

Full papers sat to time and marked against the published scheme, with Paper 1 and Paper 2 practised as the distinct skills they are. Lost marks are logged by cause so that the final weeks attack the real problem rather than the assumed one.

  • Paper 1 timed with no partial credit available, as in the exam
  • Paper 2 marked for assumptions, signs, units and significant figures
  • Error log by cause, reviewed weekly
  • Fixed session count ending with the series

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Wasl

01

What an IB Chemistry grade is actually made of

Three components produce the grade, and they reward different things. Students and parents tend to treat Chemistry as one skill measured three ways. It is closer to three skills measured separately, and a student can be strong in one and weak in another without that being visible in an overall grade.

Paper 1 is multiple choice and allows no partial credit. A student who understands a calculation but works too slowly to complete it will mark an answer they have reasoned towards rather than computed, and will be wrong about a third of the time on precisely the items they could have got right. The remedy is speed on standard quantitative routines rather than more content, and it is one of the few genuinely quick wins in the subject.

Paper 2 is where the mark scheme becomes visible. It pays for stated assumptions, correct enthalpy signs, units carried through and significant figures used consistently. It penalises explanation questions answered by restating the trend the question gave you. A student can lose a band's worth of marks across this paper without getting a single piece of chemistry wrong, which is the single most important thing for an Al Wasl parent to understand before deciding what tutoring should work on.

The scientific investigation is the most controllable component, because it is produced over months with draft feedback available rather than in a sealed room. It is also the one students most often leave until the time available no longer permits doing it properly. The table sets the three out with where each one bleeds.

02

Structure and reactivity: how the syllabus is organised

Diploma Chemistry is organised around two unifying ideas rather than as a list of discrete topics. Structure covers the models of matter, bonding, and the classification of substances. Reactivity covers what drives reactions, how fast they go and how far. The content is threaded through those two, which is more useful than it sounds, because it tells a student where to look when a question seems unfamiliar.

Most apparently novel Paper 2 questions are a familiar idea in unfamiliar clothing. A question asking why one compound has a higher boiling point than another is a structure question, and the answer is a named intermolecular force plus a reason. A question asking why a reaction proceeds at one temperature and not another is a reactivity question, and the answer involves energy distribution. A student who reflexively classifies the question before answering it writes better answers, because the classification tells them which vocabulary the mark scheme expects.

Revision organised the same way also travels better than topic-by-topic revision. Working through bonding, intermolecular forces and physical properties as one block makes the connections explicit, and the connections are what Paper 2 tests. Working through them as three separate chapters a fortnight apart produces students who can recall each and cannot link them, which is exactly the student who understands chemistry and scores a 5.

The practical consequence for tutoring is the order of work. A tutor who starts with the topic the student names as hardest is often starting in the wrong place, because the difficulty usually sits one layer below. Organic mechanisms that will not stick are frequently a bonding problem. Equilibrium calculations that keep going wrong are frequently a stoichiometry problem. Finding the layer underneath is most of the diagnostic value of a first session.

03

The topics that cost Al Wasl students the most marks

Chemistry losses are not evenly distributed. A small number of topics account for a large share of the marks that go missing, and the error inside each is specific enough to be named. That specificity is what makes the subject tractable: a student is rarely bad at Chemistry in general and usually making four or five identifiable mistakes repeatedly.

Energetics leads the list, and the sign on an enthalpy change leads energetics. A correct magnitude with the wrong sign is a wrong answer, and students who understand exothermic and endothermic perfectly well still drop the sign under time pressure. Equilibrium follows, where initial concentrations find their way into an expression that wanted equilibrium concentrations. Acids and bases follow that, where a weak-acid approximation is applied without being stated and the scheme wanted it stated.

Organic chemistry behaves differently. Students usually know the products and lose marks on the mechanism presentation: curly arrows starting from the wrong place, or from an atom rather than from a bond or a lone pair. This is a drawing convention rather than chemistry, and it is learnable in two sessions, which makes it a high-return place to start.

Across all of them sits a layer of presentational loss: units omitted, significant figures inconsistent within one answer, uncertainties not propagated. Those marks appear in both papers and in the investigation, and recovering them requires no new chemistry at all. The table pairs the topic with the error and the fix.

04

The data booklet is part of the exam

  • Learn what the booklet contains before memorising anything
  • Practise locating values under time pressure, not at leisure
  • Electrode potential sign conventions are a recurring trap
  • Bond enthalpies are averages, which some answers require stating
  • An hour spent on the booklet early repays itself across both papers

A data booklet and a periodic table are provided in every Chemistry examination, and a meaningful number of questions are written to be answered from them. Students who have not practised using them under time pressure lose those marks, not because they do not know the chemistry but because they do not know where the value lives or trust themselves to find it quickly.

The specific skills are mundane and worth drilling. Locating a standard electrode potential and getting the sign convention the right way round. Finding a bond enthalpy and recognising that it is an average rather than a specific value, which matters in some answers. Reading an infrared absorption range and matching it to a functional group. Picking the right constant from several that look similar under pressure. Each of those takes seconds for a practised student and costs a minute or two for an unpractised one, and a minute or two multiplied across a paper is a grade.

The booklet also changes what revision should include. There is no value in memorising anything the booklet provides, and students waste real hours doing it. There is substantial value in knowing precisely what it does and does not contain, because that determines what must be learned and what can be looked up. Going through the booklet page by page once, early, is an hour that pays for itself repeatedly.

In an online session this is straightforward to practise, since both people can look at the same booklet page and the same question simultaneously. It is one of several places where screen-based teaching is at no disadvantage, and a shared workspace where a tutor can watch a student search for a value is arguably better than sitting beside them, because the search itself becomes visible and correctable.

05

The scientific investigation, criterion by criterion

The investigation is a student-designed piece of practical research, marked against criteria with published descriptors and mark allocations. Students who have not read the descriptors are guessing at what is being rewarded, and in Chemistry specifically the guess is usually wrong, because the criteria reward design reasoning and evaluation far more heavily than students expect and reward the quantity of data much less.

The failure that does the most damage is a research question too broad for the apparatus and time available. It caps several criteria at once: the method cannot be focused, the data cannot support a clear conclusion, and the evaluation has nothing specific to evaluate. Narrowing the question is almost always the most valuable hour a tutor spends on an investigation, and it has to happen before the practical work rather than after it.

The second failure is the evaluation, which students write as a list of apologies. Limited time, small sample, imprecise equipment. That earns little. The descriptor wants the effect of a specific limitation on the specific conclusion drawn, and a realistic improvement that would address it. One sentence of that form outperforms a page of generic regret, and most students have never been shown the difference.

On the honesty boundary, which matters here as much as anywhere in the Diploma: a tutor may explain the criteria, model an investigation on an unrelated question, check whether a method can actually answer the question posed, and read a draft and respond with questions. A tutor may not write, rewrite or edit any part of it. Some operators in this market sell completed internal assessments outright; a student who buys one risks a malpractice finding and the Diploma itself, and no grade justifies that.

INVESTIGATION CRITERIA - WHAT EACH CREDITS AND WHERE IT GOES WRONG

06

Practical chemistry when the tutoring is online

This is the reasonable objection to online science tuition, and it deserves a direct answer rather than reassurance. Laboratory work stays at school, where the apparatus, the chemicals and the supervision are. No tutoring arrangement, in-home or online, substitutes for a school laboratory, and anyone implying otherwise is overselling.

What a tutor works on is the part of practical chemistry that is examined on paper, and that part is substantial. Variable control and why a particular control matters for a particular reaction. Uncertainty propagation through a calculation. Reading a results table for a trend and distinguishing it from noise. Identifying which source of error actually affected the conclusion rather than listing every possible one. Evaluating a method's fitness for a stated purpose. All of those are written skills assessed in both papers and in the investigation.

In practice this is where a large share of the recoverable marks sit, because practical reasoning is taught less explicitly than content. A student who has done the experiment and cannot write about its limitations precisely loses marks in a place that has nothing to do with manual skill. Working on exactly that is a reasonable use of a session and does not need a bench.

There is a documentation point too. The investigation requires raw data, processing and a written account, and students regularly return from a laboratory session with data recorded too thinly to work with: no uncertainties noted, no record of the apparatus used, no observation of anything that went wrong. Agreeing before the practical what to write down converts a laboratory hour into usable evidence, and that conversation is one of the most valuable things a tutor can have with a Chemistry student.

07

What Chemistry support costs in Dubai, and what a parent can verify

Chemistry is one of the subjects where the specialist premium is real, because the pool of people who can teach Higher Level to examiner depth is small. Here is the market picture with its sources, so that any quote you receive has a context. A qualified online subject tutor in Dubai is published at AED 150-300 an hour, with Unitors listing IB from AED 200 and IGCSE from AED 150. Specialist IB, IGCSE and A Level work is quoted at AED 270 by TutorChase, with Bestimate's specialist band at AED 200-450 and above, and BartyED publishing AED 650 at the premium end.

At the budget end, EdFlik advertises from AED 45-65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33-52, which generally means a university student. For Standard Level content catch-up that can be adequate. For Higher Level work the thing being bought is the diagnosis inside the hour rather than the hour itself, and diagnosis is what the cheaper tier usually lacks. In-home visits are quoted at AED 180-350 by Bestimate and AED 200-500 by independent home tutors, with travel inside that figure.

Monthly, Bestimate's estimates for a weekly one-hour arrangement run AED 240-600 at the budget end, AED 600-1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Published packages in this market include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599-1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Those are other providers' own figures with their own dates, not an IB Gram price list.

Two things a parent can check independently in a single afternoon. Ask for a written hourly rate and whether travel sits inside it. And ask the provider to describe, before you pay, what they would look at first in your child's marked Paper 2. A provider who answers that question specifically is selling diagnosis; one who answers it with reassurance is selling hours. IB Gram's own position is a free trial lesson first and a fee discussed once the level and the problem are known.

Fitting Chemistry into an Al Wasl Diploma week

A Diploma student taking Higher Level Chemistry in this cluster is carrying a heavy week before any tutoring is added. Six subjects with homework, laboratory sessions with write-ups, the investigation, Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay, a Creativity Activity Service commitment, and the mandatory UAE subjects KHDA requires of all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum.

Those mandatory subjects are not a small factor. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies occupy real periods. KHDA calculates instructional time on a 40-minute lesson unit, permits schools to vary lesson length provided the weekly total is met, and advises that any mandatory-subject lesson runs at least 25 minutes. Separate classes are required for Arab and non-Arab students in several of them, with combined classes strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ.

On timing, schools in this cluster finish between roughly 2.30pm and 3.15pm and arrival home along Al Wasl Road lands between about 3.30pm and 4.15pm, with the road at its slowest from four to six. For Chemistry specifically, later is worse than it is for a discussion subject: calculation work and mechanism drawing both degrade sharply when a student is tired. A 5pm start is the practical default, and a weekend morning is better than a 7pm weekday slot for anything quantitative.

Two further realities to plan for rather than discover. During Ramadan sessions typically move to after Iftar, which online delivery handles without anyone travelling, though quantitative work is better placed in the morning if the school day is shortened. And during the mock fortnight most students are better served pausing weekly sessions and sitting papers than adding an hour to an impossible week.

Where Al Wasl Chemistry students actually study, and how the geography of this cluster affects a weekly science session. Availability of a Higher Level Chemistry specialist is city-wide rather than local, for the reasons the notes give.

Al Wasl

A long strip along Al Wasl Road. Diploma students here are spread across the IB continuum schools and the Jumeirah secondaries, so Higher Level Chemistry classmates are often at different schools from each other.

Al Safa

Adjoining to the south and the location of Jumeirah Baccalaureate School and several British secondaries. A large share of Al Wasl Chemistry students sit in a laboratory with an Al Safa address.

Jumeirah 2 and 3

Seaward, with an overlapping school set. Beach Road at pick-up pushes weekday sessions later, which matters for a science session because tired students handle calculations badly.

Jumeirah 1

Northern end, closer to Jumeirah English Speaking School. Shorter journeys home make an earlier slot workable, which is worth something for a subject that is calculation-heavy.

Al Bada'a and City Walk

Inland and apartment-dense, with more students at central Dubai schools where A Level Chemistry is the more common post-16 science. Different qualification, similar failure modes.

Al Manara

Feeds Kings' School Dubai and Raffles World Academy in Umm Suqeim, both with sizeable sixth forms. Longer drives each way, and the strongest case locally for taking travel out of the arrangement.

Umm Suqeim

Where several schools on the Al Wasl shortlist sit, including IB continuum provision. Diploma science cohorts here are large enough that Higher Level demand is visible but still small in absolute terms.

Al Quoz 1

Across Sheikh Zayed Road and the working edge of the cluster. Higher Level Chemistry specialists are no more available here than anywhere else in Dubai, because the constraint is the size of the cohort nationally.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Name the level

Higher or Standard. It is the first question because Higher Level Chemistry carries additional content and a longer paper, and the gap between a 5 and a 7 at Higher Level sits almost entirely in material Standard Level never covers. A tutor comfortable at Standard Level is not automatically comfortable above it.

  2. 02

    Send a marked Paper 2

Not a report. A marked Paper 2 shows whether the marks are going on unstated assumptions, enthalpy signs, missing units, inconsistent significant figures or genuinely absent content. Those need different work, and a report card cannot distinguish between them however carefully it is written.

  3. 03

A free trial lesson with the specialist

One full session online, no cost, no card, in a shared workspace where both people can draw structures and mechanisms. Afterwards you get a written view of where the marks are leaving. If the problem turns out to sit one layer below the topic your child named, we will say which layer.

  4. 04

Sequence against the school's laboratory and deadline calendar

The investigation has school deadlines, laboratory access is scheduled, and the May session is fixed. Work follows that order rather than a generic plan: investigation first in Diploma 1, papers first in the final term, and a conversation before each practical about what data to record.

  5. 05

Weekly notes and an error log by cause

A short note after each session on what was covered, and once paper work begins a running log of lost marks sorted into causes. The log makes the last two months efficient and gives you an independent way to judge whether the sessions are achieving anything.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Level-matched Chemistry specialists

Higher Level Chemistry cohorts at individual Dubai schools are small, so the specialist pool is small and city-wide. Matching by subject and level rather than by distance from Al Wasl Road is the only way to reach it, and an in-home requirement cuts it to whoever is both qualified and nearby.

Mark-scheme behaviour taught explicitly

Stated assumptions, enthalpy signs, units carried through, consistent significant figures, and explanation questions answered with a reason rather than a restated trend. A student can lose a band across Paper 2 without getting any chemistry wrong, and that is recoverable without learning new content.

The data booklet practised, not ignored

It is provided in every paper and questions are written to be answered from it. We go through what it contains once, early, then practise finding values under time pressure, which also stops students memorising things the booklet would have given them.

A shared workspace that draws

Mechanisms, structures and energy profiles all need drawing, and both people drawing in the same space works well on screen. A tutor can also watch a student search the data booklet, which makes the search itself visible and correctable in a way sitting beside them does not.

The investigation handled within the rules

Criteria explained, scope questioned, drafts answered with marginal questions. No writing, no rewriting, no editing to completion. One operator in this market sells finished internal assessments; a student who buys one risks the Diploma, and we say so on the page.

Honest about limits and status

No UAE home visits, no Dubai office, no approval claimed from the IB, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoHRE or the Ministry of Education, no grade promised, and no IB past papers or mark schemes supplied. Home visits are an India-only service. School laboratory work cannot be replaced by any tutor.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Wasl: your questions answered

My child understands chemistry and keeps getting a 5. What is going wrong?+

Almost certainly conversion rather than comprehension, and a marked Paper 2 will show it in twenty minutes. The usual pattern is marks lost to an enthalpy sign, to an approximation applied without being stated, to units omitted from a rate constant, and to explanation questions answered by restating the trend the question supplied. None of that is a chemistry failure. A student can lose a band across Paper 2 without getting a single piece of chemistry wrong, and recovering those marks requires no new content at all.

Is Higher Level Chemistry genuinely much harder than Standard Level?+

Yes, and the difference is located rather than general. Higher Level carries additional content and a longer paper, and the extra material is where a 5 and a 7 separate: deeper kinetics with rate equations and the units that go with them, buffer and titration-curve work in acids and bases, and more demanding organic mechanisms. Standard Level is a serious qualification accepted for many courses. A student who takes Standard Level and performs strongly is usually better placed than one who takes Higher Level and cannot cope with the extension.

Which Chemistry topics should a tutor start with?+

Usually not the one the student names as hardest, because the difficulty generally sits one layer below. Organic mechanisms that will not stick are often a bonding problem. Equilibrium calculations going wrong are often a stoichiometry problem. Energetics confusion is frequently a sign-convention habit rather than a conceptual gap. Finding the layer underneath is most of the diagnostic value of a first session, and it is why the session starts with a marked script rather than with a topic list.

Why does my child keep losing marks on Paper 1 multiple choice?+

On the quantitative items, almost always, and almost always because of speed. Paper 1 offers no partial credit, so a student who understands a calculation but works too slowly to finish it will mark the answer they reasoned towards rather than computed, and will be wrong a meaningful share of the time on exactly the questions they could have secured. The fix is speed on standard calculation routines rather than more content, and it is one of the quicker wins available in the subject.

How important is the Chemistry data booklet?+

More important than most students treat it. A data booklet and periodic table are provided in every Chemistry examination, and a meaningful number of questions are written to be answered from them. The skills are mundane and worth drilling: finding an electrode potential with the sign convention the right way round, locating a bond enthalpy and knowing it is an average, matching an infrared range to a functional group. Going through the booklet once, early, also stops students memorising things it would have given them.

Can a tutor help with the Chemistry scientific investigation?+

Within a clear boundary, and the boundary should be stated to the student at the outset. A tutor may explain the criteria, model an investigation on an unrelated question, check whether the proposed method can actually answer the question, and read a draft and respond with questions. A tutor may not write, rewrite or edit any part of it. The most valuable legitimate help is early: narrowing the research question until the apparatus and time available can genuinely answer it, which is where most weak investigations were decided.

How are practical skills taught if the lessons are online?+

The laboratory work stays at school, where the apparatus and supervision are, and no tutoring arrangement replaces that. What a tutor works on is the examined part: variable control and why a specific control matters, uncertainty propagation, reading a results table for trend against noise, identifying which error actually affected the conclusion, and evaluating a method against its stated purpose. Those are written skills assessed in both papers and in the investigation, and a large share of recoverable marks sits in them.

Will a Chemistry tutor come to our home in Al Wasl?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run in India only. Chemistry sessions here are one-to-one over live video in a shared workspace where both people can draw mechanisms, structures and energy profiles. For this subject the format works well, and watching a student search the data booklet on a shared screen is arguably more useful than sitting beside them, because the search becomes visible and correctable.

What should my child write down during a school practical to use later?+

More than most students do. Raw data with uncertainties noted rather than rounded values. The apparatus actually used, including its precision. Anything that went wrong or behaved unexpectedly, because that is the material a good evaluation is built from. Any deviation from the planned method. Students regularly return from a laboratory session with data too thin to process properly, and agreeing in advance what to record converts a laboratory hour into usable evidence rather than a vague memory.

How many Chemistry sessions a week do Diploma families in Al Wasl start with?+

One is normal, moving to two in the final term or when the investigation and paper practice both need attention at once. The limit is the student's capacity to do the work between sessions rather than the budget. A full Paper 2 takes well over an hour to sit and roughly as long again to review properly, and a student booked three times a week has no space left to produce the evidence those sessions exist to diagnose. More contact hours past that point produces less progress.

What time of day suits a Chemistry session for a family near Safa Park?+

Earlier than you might think, because quantitative work degrades with tiredness faster than discussion does. Schools here finish between roughly 2.30pm and 3.15pm and arrival home at the southern end of Al Wasl lands between 3.30pm and 4.15pm, with the road slowest from four to six. A 5pm start is the practical default. For anything calculation-heavy a weekend morning beats a 7pm weekday slot, and online delivery means no tutor's journey has to be accommodated either way.

Is Higher Level Chemistry required for medicine or pharmacy?+

It is commonly specified or strongly preferred for medicine, pharmacy, chemical engineering and several biosciences, but requirements are set by each individual course and vary between universities and countries. The only reliable method is to build the shortlist and read each course's own stated entry requirements, including for UAE universities, rather than relying on a general rule. Do that in Year 11 while the level choice is still open, because discovering a requirement in Year 13 is an expensive way to learn it.

My child is coming into Diploma Chemistry from IGCSE. What is the gap?+

Two things, both predictable. Mechanisms have to be explained rather than recalled, which is a different kind of thinking from the structured recall IGCSE rewards, and curly-arrow conventions have to be learned properly because the scheme marks the drawing as well as the products. And the scientific investigation is self-designed rather than prescribed, which is unfamiliar territory for a student used to following a method sheet. Both are addressable in the first term if they are identified then rather than in the spring.

Can you supply IB Chemistry past papers, mark schemes or the data booklet?+

No. Those documents belong to the IB, and reproducing or distributing them is a copyright problem rather than a grey area. Your child's school has legitimate access and can provide what is needed, and sessions work from material the student already holds. Be cautious with any site offering a downloadable bundle of IB assessment material, since distributing it is something they have no right to do, which is a reasonable signal about how the rest of the service is run.

What happens if no Higher Level Chemistry specialist is available?+

We tell you plainly rather than assigning a general science tutor and hoping. Higher Level Chemistry is one of the thinner categories in this market, and it tightens further during exam terms when specialists are fully committed. You get a clear statement that we do not currently have the right person, a realistic estimate of how long a match would take, and a suggestion for the interim, which is sometimes the school's own department. A mismatched science tutor costs a term.

Does IB Gram hold any IB or KHDA accreditation for teaching Chemistry?+

No. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licensing or partnership from the IB, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoHRE or the Ministry of Education, has no office or centre in the UAE, and is not an IB World School. A tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai would need a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, which is a specific thing issued to a specific kind of business, and we do not hold one. Treat any provider claiming board accreditation as a provider making a checkable claim.

Send a marked Paper 2 and name the level

Those two things are enough to start properly. The level decides which specialist fits; the marked script decides what the first month works on, and it usually points somewhere different from the topic a student would have named. A free trial lesson costs nothing and typically shows within an hour whether the marks are leaving through signs, assumptions, units, significant figures or genuinely missing content. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time in a shared workspace where both people draw, scheduled around the Al Wasl school run, the laboratory timetable and the mandatory-subject homework rather than around a drive.
