IB MYP Tutor in Al Wasl

An IB MYP tutor in Al Wasl spends most of the hour on something the report card never names: the criterion letter. Middle Years Programme marks are not percentages. Every task is judged against lettered criteria scored out of 8, and a student in Al Wasl who writes beautifully but never answers criterion D loses the same marks every term. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with the task sheet and the criterion descriptors open on screen for both people.

  • Criterion-by-criterion work, named A to D in the student's own subject
  • All eight MYP subject groups, from MYP 1 through to MYP 5 eAssessment
  • Personal Project coaching that keeps the work the student's own
  • Free trial lesson on a real task sheet before any payment

IB & IGCSE in Al Wasl

MYP marks are letters and eights, and that changes what tutoring is for

The first thing to understand about the Middle Years Programme is that it does not mark the way the school report implies. There is no running percentage. Each subject is assessed against four lettered criteria, each one scored from 0 to 8, and the four scores are added and converted to a grade from 1 to 7 using published boundaries. A student can be strong on two criteria and weak on two and come out looking mediocre, with nobody in the household able to say which half was the problem.

That is the gap an IB MYP tutor in Al Wasl is genuinely useful for. The criteria are published, they are specific, and they are different in each subject group. In MYP Mathematics they are knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. In MYP Sciences they are knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Those are not the same skill asked four ways; they are four separate things, and a student who has only ever been taught the first one will plateau at the same grade indefinitely.

Al Wasl families meet this most often in two places. The first is MYP 4, when tasks get longer and the criteria that reward process rather than recall start to dominate. The second is MYP 5, where eAssessment and the Personal Project arrive together and the student discovers that the thing being judged is their documentation of their thinking, not only the output. Both are coachable, and both are badly served by generic homework help.

The subject-level detail is where this page spends its time, because that is what the brief for this page asks for and because it is the thing the Al Wasl market does not publish. Competitor pages for Dubai MYP tutoring treat the programme as a label. None of the pages we examined names a single criterion letter, and none explains that a criterion is marked against a descriptor with specific verbs in it. A parent who reads the descriptor for criterion C in their child's subject learns more in five minutes than a term of parents' evenings provides.

On delivery, be clear from the start: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, and home visits are a service we run only in India. MYP tuition for Al Wasl runs online, one-to-one, over live video. For criterion work this is not a compromise but an advantage, because the task sheet, the descriptor table and the student's own draft can all sit on a shared screen while the tutor points at the exact sentence that is not earning the mark.

The pages next to this one take different routes through the same neighbourhood. The Al Wasl science and physics pages work from the exam calendar and the paper structure; the home-tutor pages compare Al Wasl with the communities either side of it. This page works from the assessment model, because for a Middle Years student the assessment model is the thing nobody has explained.

At a glance

  • Each MYP subject is assessed against four lettered criteria, each scored 0 to 8
  • The four criterion scores total 32 and convert to a 1 to 7 grade by published boundaries
  • Criterion names differ by subject group, so the skills being judged differ too
  • MYP 5 adds on-screen eAssessment and ePortfolio routes alongside the Personal Project
  • The Personal Project is assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting, not on the object produced
  • Lessons are online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time, around the Al Wasl school run
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The Middle Years Programme spans five years in most Dubai schools, and the tutoring question changes sharply between the start and the end of it. Naming the year your child is actually in prevents a lot of wasted money.

MYP1-3Ages 11-14 · MYP 1-3

MYP 1 to 3, the early years

Eight subject groups, criterion-referenced from the first term, with shorter tasks and more scaffolding. Students at this stage usually understand the content and lose marks on the shape of the response: no statement of inquiry referenced, no reflection, no evaluation of method. These are habits of writing rather than gaps in knowledge, which is why they are cheap to fix here and expensive to fix later.

In Al Wasl most MYP 1 to 3 students are in an IB continuum school a short drive away, which means the school day ends early enough for a weekly session without a long commute. This is the stage at which families almost never book a tutor, and the stage at which a single term of criterion work pays for itself most clearly.

MYP4Ages 14-15 · MYP 4

MYP 4, where the criteria start to bite

Tasks lengthen, the process criteria carry more weight, and subject choices begin narrowing towards the Diploma. Mathematics splits into standard and extended routes in many schools, and sciences begin to separate. The student who has coasted on recall meets criterion B in sciences or criterion D in mathematics and discovers that nobody ever taught them how to design an investigation or justify a real-world application.

This is the most common point at which an Al Wasl household first asks for MYP help. The usual presentation is a grade that has slipped from a 6 to a 5 with no obvious cause, and the usual finding is two criteria carrying the whole loss. One session with the mark breakdown in front of us normally identifies which two.

MYP5Ages 15-16 · MYP 5

MYP 5, eAssessment and the Personal Project

The final year carries the Personal Project plus, in schools that offer it, MYP eAssessment through on-screen examinations and ePortfolios leading to the IB MYP Certificate. Deadlines cluster, and the Personal Project process journal has to be maintained across months rather than produced at the end. The commonest failure is a good project with thin documentation of planning and reflection.

Al Wasl students in MYP 5 are often simultaneously deciding between the Diploma and A Levels, because several schools in the Al Safa and Jumeirah cluster run one route and not the other. That decision and the Personal Project land in the same months, which is why the autumn term of MYP 5 is the busiest slot we are asked for here.

MYP-DPAges 16-17 · MYP 5 into DP1

The MYP to Diploma bridge

The Diploma asks for things the MYP deliberately does not: timed written examinations with heavy recall, Higher Level depth in three subjects, and an Internal Assessment judged against criteria that look familiar but are marked far more strictly. The gap is widest in mathematics and the sciences, where DP1 assumes algebraic fluency that criterion-referenced MYP tasks did not force.

For Al Wasl families moving from an MYP school into a Diploma school, the useful window is the summer between MYP 5 and DP1. Six to eight sessions of algebra and examination-style practice in that window removes most of the first-term shock, and it costs less than remediation in DP1 does.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the MYP subject groups, with the criterion letters that apply in each and the places Al Wasl students most often lose marks. Read the ones your child studies; the criterion names are the vocabulary the rest of this page uses.

MYP Mathematics

Standard and extended, MYP 1-5

Criteria A knowing and understanding, B investigating patterns, C communicating, D applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Most lost marks sit in B and D: students who can compute will not generalise a pattern into a rule, and will not justify the degree of accuracy of a real-world answer.

MYP Sciences

Integrated or separate, MYP 1-5

Criteria A knowing and understanding, B inquiring and designing, C processing and evaluating, D reflecting on the impacts of science. Criterion B is the usual gap: a research question stated without variables, a method without a control, a hypothesis that is a prediction with no reasoning attached.

MYP Language and Literature

MYP 1-5

Criteria A analysing, B organising, C producing text, D using language. Strong readers often lose criterion A marks by retelling the text instead of analysing how a choice creates an effect, and criterion B marks by writing without a visible structure the examiner can follow.

MYP Language Acquisition

Phases 1-6, MYP 1-5

Criteria A listening, B reading, C speaking, D writing, assessed by phase rather than by year group. Students placed in the wrong phase lose marks that look like weak language and are really a placement problem, which is worth checking before booking any tutoring at all.

MYP Individuals and Societies

MYP 1-5

Criteria A knowing and understanding, B investigating, C communicating, D thinking critically. Criterion D is where the grade is decided: sources have to be evaluated for origin, purpose, value and limitation, and most students summarise the source instead of judging it.

MYP Design

MYP 1-5

Criteria A inquiring and analysing, B developing ideas, C creating the solution, D evaluating. The design cycle is the assessment, so a working product with no documented research, specification or testing against that specification scores poorly however good the product is.

MYP Arts

Visual, performing, MYP 1-5

Criteria A investigating, B developing, C creating or performing, D evaluating. The process portfolio carries much of the mark, and students who make good work without recording their experimentation and their response to feedback cap themselves on A and B.

MYP Physical and Health Education

MYP 1-5

Criteria A knowing and understanding, B planning for performance, C applying and performing, D reflecting and improving performance. Written criteria A, B and D carry marks that surprise sporting students and their parents, since performance alone touches only criterion C.

MYP Interdisciplinary units

MYP 1-5

Assessed with its own criteria on disciplinary grounding, synthesising and reflecting. Students treat these units as a lighter task; they are marked as a separate set of criteria and can move a reported grade, so they deserve the same preparation as any single-subject assessment.

MYP Personal Project

MYP 5

Assessed on planning, applying skills, and reflecting, with the process journal as the main evidence. The object produced is not what earns the grade; the documented thinking around it is, which is why a strong maker with a thin journal often scores below a modest maker with a full one.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of MYP support cover almost everything Al Wasl households ask for, and the right one depends on whether the problem is a subject, a criterion or a project deadline.

Weekly one-to-one on one subject

A 60-minute session each week on a single MYP subject, worked against the criterion descriptors and the school's own task sheets. The tutor reads the marked task, identifies which criterion lost the marks, and teaches that skill directly rather than reteaching content the student already holds.

  • Fixed weekday slot, usually from 4.30pm for Al Wasl households
  • Driven by the school's own task sheets and marked work
  • Each session names the criterion being worked on
  • Session recordings available for the student to revisit

Criterion repair across subjects

Some students lose marks on the same criterion in three different subjects, because the underlying skill is one skill. Investigating in sciences, investigating in individuals and societies and investigating patterns in mathematics all ask for a researchable question and a structured method. A short block on that skill moves several grades at once.

  • Scoped from the marked work in two or three subjects at once
  • Targets the shared skill, not each subject separately
  • Usually four to six sessions with a stated finish point
  • Ends with the student applying it to a live school task

Personal Project supervision

Fortnightly sessions across the project window, focused on the process journal and the report rather than on the product. The tutor asks the questions a supervisor asks, checks that planning and reflection are being recorded as they happen, and reviews the student's own writing. The student does the project; nobody else touches it.

  • Fortnightly 60-minute sessions across the project window
  • Journal reviewed as evidence, not written for the student
  • Report structure mapped to the assessment criteria
  • Longer weekend slots available, which suit journal review

The MYP 5 to DP1 summer bridge

A six to eight session block in the summer between MYP 5 and the first Diploma year, concentrated on algebraic fluency, timed written response and the recall load the Diploma assumes. This is the cheapest intervention available to a family facing the transition, and it is bought by far fewer households than need it.

  • Runs through the UAE summer for families staying in Dubai
  • Algebra and timed written response are the two priorities
  • Introduces Diploma command terms before DP1 starts
  • Includes an honest view on Higher Level subject choices

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Wasl

01

What the criterion letters actually ask for, subject by subject

No competitor page in this market names a single MYP criterion. That is a strange omission, because the criteria are the assessment and they are published. A parent who reads the descriptor for the criterion their child is losing marks on usually understands the problem immediately, and often recognises it as something the child has been doing wrong for two years without anybody isolating it.

The pattern across subject groups is worth seeing whole. Criterion A is almost always knowing and understanding, which is the closest thing the MYP has to a traditional recall mark. Criterion B is typically process: inquiring and designing in sciences, investigating patterns in mathematics, investigating in individuals and societies, developing ideas in design. Criterion C is usually communication or production, and criterion D is usually evaluation, reflection or application to a real context.

That structure explains a common Al Wasl parent experience. A child who is good at school in the conventional sense scores well on A, respectably on C, and poorly on B and D, producing a middling overall grade that nobody can account for. The grade is not a verdict on ability; it is a verdict on two specific untaught skills. Teach the structure of a research question and the structure of a reflection, and two criteria move at once.

The table below sets the criteria out by subject group so a parent can find their child's subject and read the four things being judged. The descriptors themselves are in the IB's subject guides, which belong to the IB and which schools hold; ask your child's coordinator for the relevant descriptor table rather than relying on a third-party summary, including this one.

02

How four scores out of eight become a grade out of seven

Each criterion is marked from 0 to 8 against level descriptors, which means the maximum total for a subject is 32. That total is then converted to a grade from 1 to 7 using boundaries the IB publishes and schools apply. The arithmetic matters because it tells a family where the marginal mark is cheapest to win.

Consider a student sitting on 6, 4, 6, 4 across the four criteria. The total is 20. The two weak criteria are costing eight marks between them, and moving each by two levels adds four marks to the total. Compare that with pushing criterion A from 6 to 8, which is hard, competitive and worth two marks. Almost always the cheapest marks available are on the criterion the student scores lowest on, and almost always the student wants to practise the one they already do well.

The second consequence is that a single bad task does not sink a grade in the way a bad test does under a percentage system. Criterion scores are judged on best-fit across the body of work in the reporting period, which schools interpret according to their own assessment policy. That is a reason to ask the school how it determines the reported criterion level rather than to assume the last task decides it.

What a tutor does with this is simple and specific. We look at the marked tasks, find the criterion with the lowest level, read the descriptor for the level above, and teach exactly the difference between where the student is and where that descriptor sits. That is a narrow, finishable piece of work, and it is far more useful than general subject revision.

MYP 5: eAssessment, ePortfolios and the Certificate

In the final MYP year some schools enter students for MYP eAssessment, which combines on-screen examinations with ePortfolios and leads to the IB MYP Certificate. Other authorised MYP schools do not enter candidates at all and instead report school-based grades. Those two situations produce completely different final years, and the first useful question for any Al Wasl family in MYP 4 is which one their school runs.

Where eAssessment applies, the on-screen examinations are a genuinely different experience from the task-based assessment of earlier years. They are time-bounded, they present unfamiliar stimulus material, and they reward students who can read a prompt quickly and structure a response under pressure. A student who has produced excellent extended work across four years can still be unprepared for that, because nothing in MYP 1 to 4 necessarily practises it.

The ePortfolio route works the other way. It rewards sustained documentation: evidence of process, of experimentation, of response to feedback, gathered over months. Students lose marks here not because the work is weak but because the record of the work is thin. A tutor's job in an ePortfolio subject is mostly to keep asking whether the evidence exists yet, which is unglamorous and effective.

Either way, the practical advice for an Al Wasl household is the same. Establish in MYP 4 which route applies, ask the coordinator what the internal deadlines are, and put them in a household calendar. The commonest avoidable disaster in MYP 5 is not weak work; it is a deadline that arrived while a family assumed there was another term.

04

The Personal Project, and where honest help stops

  • Planning, applying skills and reflecting are the assessed criteria, not the product
  • The process journal has to be built as the work happens, not reconstructed later
  • A tutor questions, reviews and teaches; the student writes every word
  • Fortnightly supervision across the window beats intensive help at the end

The Personal Project is assessed on planning, on applying skills, and on reflecting. The object the student makes is evidence, not the grade. This catches out capable students constantly: a beautifully finished product with a journal written in the last fortnight scores below a modest product with months of recorded thinking behind it.

The process journal is therefore the centre of the work. It needs to show the goal being set and refined, the research being done and judged, the obstacles being met and responded to, and the student's own assessment of what they achieved against what they intended. None of that can be reconstructed convincingly after the fact, which is why supervision across the whole window beats intensive help at the end.

Here is the boundary, stated plainly because the market around us is not always clear about it. A tutor may ask the questions a supervisor asks, point out where the journal has no evidence of a criterion, read the student's draft report and say which section does not meet the descriptor, and teach the skills the project needs. A tutor may not write any part of the project, the journal or the report, and may not dictate sentences for a student to transcribe. The work has to be the student's own, and the consequences of it not being so fall on the student.

One seller in this market advertises completed Internal Assessments at a published price. Treat any similar offer about a Personal Project the same way: as a reason to stop the conversation. The grade is not worth the risk, and a student who has outsourced the project enters the Diploma without the skills the project exists to build.

05

The MYP to Diploma gap, named subject by subject

The Middle Years Programme and the Diploma are both IB programmes and they assess almost opposite things. The MYP asks for process, documentation, reflection and application, assessed over extended tasks. The Diploma asks for recall under time pressure, technical fluency and Higher Level depth, assessed mostly by terminal written examinations with one Internal Assessment per subject. A student who has thrived under the first model can struggle badly in the first term of the second.

The gap is widest in mathematics. MYP mathematics rewards investigation and communication; Diploma Mathematics Analysis and Approaches assumes algebraic manipulation is automatic and spends its time on calculus, functions and proof. A student who has always had time and a calculator meets Paper 1 without one, and the problem looks like weak mathematics when it is really absent fluency.

In the sciences the gap is content volume and quantitative work. Diploma Chemistry and Physics carry substantially more material than MYP sciences, examined in timed papers with command terms the MYP does not use in the same way. In the humanities and languages the gap is narrower, because extended writing transfers well, but timed essay writing still has to be practised specifically.

For an Al Wasl family the actionable version is this: identify the two subjects your child intends to take at Higher Level, and spend the summer between MYP 5 and DP1 on the specific fluency those two assume. Six to eight sessions is usually enough. It is the single best-value block in this entire page, and almost nobody books it.

What MYP tutoring costs in Dubai, cheapest option first

Work up from the bottom of the market, because for Middle Years support the cheap end is more often adequate than it is at Diploma level. Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65; the budget online and university-student band overall runs AED 45 to 150. For an MYP 1 to 3 student who needs homework structure and someone to check that a reflection has actually been written, that band can genuinely be enough.

Above it, qualified online subject tutors run AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. This is the band where criterion-level work becomes realistic, because it requires a tutor who has read the subject guide rather than one who knows the content. For MYP 4 and 5, and for anything touching eAssessment or the Personal Project, this is the honest starting point.

The specialist band, AED 200 to 450 and above, is quoted by TutorChase at AED 270 and by Bestimate at AED 200 to 450 plus; premium named or examiner-led tutors reach AED 500 to 650, with BartyED publishing AED 650. In-home one-to-one visits, travel included, sit at AED 180 to 500, with Bestimate quoting AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors reaching AED 500. On monthly figures, Bestimate's estimates for weekly one-hour sessions are AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year work; advertised packages include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions.

Each of those figures belongs to the provider named beside it. None is an IB Gram rate, and we do not put a price list on a landing page because the answer depends on the subject group, the year and the number of weeks. For context a parent can check independently, KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in Dubai private school fees for 2026-27, under an economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total.

Online delivery, and the Al Wasl afternoon it has to fit into

IB Gram does not sell home visits in the UAE; home tutoring is a service we offer only in India, and MYP tuition for Al Wasl is delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. For criterion work that format carries a specific advantage worth spelling out, rather than being defended as an acceptable substitute.

Criterion assessment is about documents. A task sheet, a descriptor table, a marked draft, a process journal entry. All four can be on a shared screen simultaneously, with the tutor's cursor on the exact sentence that fails the descriptor and the student's own typing visible as they revise it. In a room with a single sheet of paper, that comparison is much harder to hold. Screen sharing is the right tool for this particular job.

The Al Wasl timing picture is favourable. The neighbourhood sits close to its main IB and British secondaries, so arrival home is earlier than in most Dubai communities and a 4.30pm start is usually workable, with 4pm possible from the Safa Park end. Middle Years students have shorter concentration spans than Diploma students, so a focused 60 minutes early in the afternoon beats a 90-minute session at 7pm. Avoiding a commute at both ends is most of what makes that possible.

The trade-offs should be stated rather than glossed. A younger MYP student may need a parent in the room for the first sessions to stay on task. Handwritten mathematics working needs a visible writing surface, so a tilted phone or a document camera is worth setting up before the first paid lesson. And a household with a weak connection should find that out on the free trial. None of those is fatal and all are easier to solve in advance than in week three.

08

KHDA, the mandatory subjects, and the shape of an MYP week in Dubai

KHDA, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in Dubai, and it inspects private schools annually on a six-band scale. Elsewhere in the country the map differs: ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in Abu Dhabi, the Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge does the same there, and the Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah.

For a Middle Years student in Dubai the mandatory subject rules shape the week directly. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA's requirements had to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year, or April 2026 for schools whose year begins in April. Schools must organise separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited.

KHDA also sets the language of instruction: Standard Arabic for Islamic Education for Arabs and for Arabic as a first language, Arabic as the primary language for Social Studies for Arab students, and the school's licensed-curriculum language for non-Arabs in Islamic Education and in moral, social and cultural studies. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length if total weekly time is met, and any mandatory subject lesson is advised to run at least 25 minutes. For the mandatory subjects, using different or additional content without prior Ministry of Education permission is strictly prohibited.

Put together with eight MYP subject groups, this is a full week. Dubai's private sector is also expanding: the 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places, after six opened in 2025-26 and enrolment rose 6%. For a parent planning tutoring, the operational conclusion is modest and reliable: one protected hour a week on a named criterion outperforms an ambitious schedule the household cannot keep.

09

Permits, and what an Al Wasl parent is entitled to ask

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit, and asking about it is reasonable rather than rude. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 Regarding the Introduction of Private Tuition Work Permits. It is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students.

MoHRE's service page is titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing. It lists no fees and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so any figure circulating online should be treated as unverified until a parent can find it on an official source.

A related point applies specifically to Middle Years families, who are often tempted by the idea of their child's own subject teacher. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for Abu Dhabi private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with their own school. That is press-reported and worth verifying against the current policy, but it is a clear enough signal to avoid the arrangement.

Finally, the distinction between an individual tutor and an institution. A tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, with initial approval first and a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps. IB Gram holds no such permit and operates no UAE premises. We are an online matching platform, and describing ourselves as anything else would be a misrepresentation rather than marketing.

Where we tutor

Al Wasl and the communities that share its school run

MYP sessions are booked around arrival home, and arrival home depends on the route. These are the communities around Al Wasl we are asked about, with what the timing actually allows in each.

Al Wasl

The Al Wasl Road corridor between Safa Park and the Jumeirah side. Short runs to the local IB and British secondaries mean a 4.30pm MYP session is realistic most weekdays, which suits the shorter attention span of a younger Middle Years student.

Al Safa 1

Across Sheikh Zayed Road, sharing the same catchment. Households here often have one child in MYP and one in IGCSE, so the common booking is two different subjects in consecutive slots on the same evening.

Al Safa 2

Bordering Al Quoz 1, with slightly longer inland runs. Saturday morning sessions are used heavily here, which works well for Personal Project supervision because a longer slot suits journal review.

Jumeirah 1

Older villa stock near the beach road. Beach Road congestion makes 3.30pm unrealistic in the cooler months, so MYP slots from here usually start at 4.45pm or later.

Jumeirah 2

School-dense, with primaries inside the community. A younger MYP 1 or 2 student is often home an hour before an older sibling, which is the one case where an early 3.45pm slot genuinely works.

Jumeirah 3

Towards Umm Suqeim and Al Manara. Longer school runs push the first workable slot to 5pm, and MYP 5 families here more often choose a weekend slot for Personal Project work.

Umm Suqeim

Short along the coast, slow inland at peak. Middle Years students here frequently fit tutoring on Friday afternoon, which is a better match for a 60-minute criterion-focused session than a tired Tuesday evening.

Al Manara

Inland of Umm Suqeim near Al Khail Road. The standard pattern is one weekday evening plus one weekend morning, which fits a subject plus Personal Project split cleanly.

City Walk and Pearl Jumeira

Apartment living with a younger demographic, so proportionally more MYP than Diploma enquiries. Lessons are usually taken in a bedroom, and a document camera or a tilted phone helps for handwritten mathematics working.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Wasl

IB continuum schools serving Al Wasl

Students we support attend these schools. For MYP the relevant question is whether the school offers MYP eAssessment leading to the IB MYP Certificate, because some authorised MYP schools do not enter candidates for it and that changes what MYP 5 looks like entirely.

  • Jumeirah Baccalaureate School, Al Safa
  • Emirates International School Jumeirah
  • Raffles World Academy, Umm Suqeim
  • Dubai International Academy, Al Barsha
  • GEMS World Academy, Al Barsha
  • Safa Community School, Al Quoz 1

British-curriculum neighbours Al Wasl families also consider

Where the comparison lands when a family is weighing MYP against IGCSE at fourteen. Named here as market context only. KHDA inspects Dubai private schools annually and publishes a band for each on a six-point scale, and the current band on KHDA's own listing is the figure to check.

  • Jumeirah College, Al Safa
  • Jumeirah English Speaking School, Jumeirah
  • Horizon English School, Al Safa
  • Safa British School
  • Dubai College, Al Sufouh
  • Kings' School Dubai, Umm Suqeim

Named schools appear as context for the Al Wasl education market only; IB Gram claims no affiliation, partnership or endorsement from any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the subject group and the marked work

The two things that make a plan possible are which MYP subject group your child studies and a recent marked task with the criterion levels on it. Year group alone tells us almost nothing, because the same year contains students with completely different criterion profiles.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson on a real task sheet

The trial runs on your child's own task sheet rather than as an introductory conversation, so you can watch the tutor locate the criterion that lost the marks. No payment and no card are required to book it, and if the fit is wrong we will try a different tutor.

  3. 03

A criterion profile, not a general assessment

The first session produces a short written note naming which criterion letters are low, what the descriptor one level above asks for, and which skill will be taught first. That note is the plan, and it makes progress checkable rather than a matter of impression.

  4. 04

Fixed slots on Gulf Standard Time

Sessions are booked on GST around the Al Wasl school run, typically from 4.30pm on weekdays with weekend mornings available for Personal Project work. During Ramadan slots shift later, including post-Iftar timings, and that is agreed in advance rather than improvised.

  5. 05

Progress measured on the next marked task

The test of a block is whether the targeted criterion level moved on a real school assessment. We ask to see the next marked task and compare. If the level has not moved, the plan changes or the tutor does, rather than the block simply continuing.

  6. 06

An honest answer when we cannot cover it

Some MYP combinations are narrow, particularly in language acquisition phases and specific arts disciplines. If nobody suitable is free in your window we will say so rather than putting a generalist in the slot, and we will tell you where the tutor is based.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We work in criterion letters, not in topic lists

Every session names the criterion it is about. That is the vocabulary the MYP marks in, and it is the reason a block of tutoring can be judged as successful or not rather than merely felt to be useful.

The subject guide is the reference, not a textbook

Criterion descriptors differ by subject group, and a tutor working from a general textbook cannot target them. Our match is on whether the tutor has taught the specific subject group against its own published criteria.

The Personal Project stays the student's work

Supervision means questioning, reviewing and teaching. Nobody writes a journal entry or a report section for a student. We state that explicitly because providers in this market openly sell the opposite.

Market rates published with their sources

Every AED figure here carries the provider that published it, so you can verify it independently. Three of the six strongest pages in this market publish no price at all, and two quote in USD, a currency UAE families do not transact in.

The MYP to Diploma gap named honestly

We say which subjects the transition actually hurts and what closes the gap, including the summer bridge most families never buy. That is more useful than implying the two programmes are a smooth continuum, which they are not.

Regulatory facts you can check at source

Permit, regulator and mandatory-subject statements here come from u.ae, web.khda.gov.ae and mohre.gov.ae. Where a document can be revised, we tell you to read the live version rather than trusting a figure copied onto a page.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Wasl: your questions answered

What exactly is the MYP marked on, if there are no percentages?+

Each MYP subject is assessed against four lettered criteria, A to D, and each criterion is marked from 0 to 8 against published level descriptors. The four scores add to a maximum of 32, which is converted to a reported grade from 1 to 7 using published boundaries. The criterion names differ by subject group: in mathematics they are knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Ask your child's coordinator for the descriptor table for their subjects. It is the single most useful document a Middle Years parent can read.

My child's MYP grade dropped from a 6 to a 5 and nobody can tell me why. What do I do?+

Ask for the criterion-level breakdown rather than the grade. Almost every unexplained MYP grade drop turns out to be two specific criteria falling while the other two hold, and the two that fall are usually the process and evaluation criteria rather than knowledge. Once you know which letters are low, read the descriptor for the level immediately above and you will usually recognise the problem. That is a narrow and finishable piece of work for a tutor, which is why a diagnostic session on marked tasks is worth more than a term of general subject help.

Which MYP criteria do students in Al Wasl most often lose marks on?+

The process and evaluation criteria, consistently. In sciences that is criterion B, inquiring and designing, where a research question appears without variables and a method without a control. In mathematics it is criterion B, investigating patterns, and criterion D, applying mathematics in real-life contexts, where students compute correctly but will not generalise or justify. In individuals and societies it is criterion D, thinking critically, where sources are summarised instead of evaluated. All three are structural writing skills rather than content gaps, which is why they respond quickly to direct teaching.

How much does an IB MYP tutor in Al Wasl cost per hour?+

Market figures in Dubai, each attributed to its publisher: budget online and student tutors run AED 45 to 150, with Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65. Qualified online subject tutors sit at AED 150 to 300, Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. IB specialists are quoted at AED 200 to 450 and above, TutorChase at AED 270. Bestimate's monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions are AED 240 to 600 budget and AED 600 to 1,200 mid-range. None of these is an IB Gram price; ask for a quote after the free trial, against a stated plan.

Does my child's school enter students for MYP eAssessment?+

Some authorised MYP schools do and some do not, and the answer changes the whole of MYP 5. Where eAssessment applies, it combines on-screen examinations with ePortfolios and leads to the IB MYP Certificate; where it does not, the school reports its own criterion-based grades. Ask the MYP coordinator directly, ideally while your child is in MYP 4 rather than MYP 5. If on-screen examinations are coming, timed response under pressure needs practising specifically, because nothing in the earlier MYP years necessarily builds it.

Can a tutor help with the MYP Personal Project without doing it for my child?+

Yes, and the distinction is sharp. A tutor can ask the questions a supervisor asks, point out where the process journal holds no evidence of a required criterion, read your child's own draft report and say which section falls short of the descriptor, and teach the research or technical skills the project needs. A tutor cannot write any part of the journal, the report or the project, and must not dictate sentences for a student to transcribe. Any provider offering to produce the project is offering an academic-integrity breach whose consequences fall on your child.

What is the Personal Project actually assessed on?+

Planning, applying skills, and reflecting. The object your child makes is evidence, not the grade. That is why a beautifully finished product with a journal written in the final fortnight can score below a modest product with months of recorded thinking behind it. The journal needs to show the goal being set and refined, research being judged rather than collected, obstacles being met, and the student assessing what they achieved against what they intended. None of that reconstructs convincingly after the fact, so supervision across the whole window matters more than help at the end.

How big is the jump from MYP 5 to the IB Diploma?+

Larger than the shared IB branding suggests, because the two programmes assess nearly opposite things. The MYP rewards process, documentation and application over extended tasks; the Diploma rewards recall and technical fluency under timed examination conditions. The gap is widest in mathematics, where Analysis and Approaches assumes automatic algebraic manipulation and includes non-calculator papers, and in the sciences, where content volume rises sharply. Six to eight sessions in the summer between MYP 5 and DP1, aimed at the two intended Higher Level subjects, removes most of the first-term shock.

What time can an MYP session start for a family in Al Wasl?+

Al Wasl sits close to its main IB and British secondaries, so arrival home is earlier than in most Dubai communities and a 4.30pm start works on most weekdays, with 4pm possible from the Safa Park end. From Jumeirah 3 and Umm Suqeim the first realistic slot drifts to 5pm. Middle Years students concentrate better earlier, so one focused hour in the late afternoon beats a longer evening session. Slots are booked on Gulf Standard Time and shift later during Ramadan, including post-Iftar timings, agreed in advance.

Can one tutor cover several MYP subjects at once?+

Often the better answer is one tutor working on one criterion across several subjects. Students frequently lose marks on the same underlying skill in three places: inquiring and designing in sciences, investigating in individuals and societies, and investigating patterns in mathematics all ask for a researchable question and a structured method. A short block on that single skill can move several reported grades together. Where the problem is genuinely subject-specific content, a specialist in that subject group is the right choice instead.

Is my child in the right MYP language acquisition phase?+

It is worth checking before buying any tutoring, because a placement problem looks exactly like weak language. Language acquisition is assessed in phases rather than by year group, with criteria A listening, B reading, C speaking and D writing. A student placed above their actual level loses marks across all four criteria and reads the result as personal failure; one placed below plateaus. Ask the coordinator which phase your child is in and on what evidence. If the placement looks wrong, that conversation is more valuable than a term of lessons.

Why would an Al Wasl family choose online MYP tutoring over someone local?+

Criterion work is document work, and documents live better on a shared screen than on a single sheet of paper between two people. The task sheet, the descriptor table, the marked draft and the journal entry can all be visible at once, with the tutor's cursor on the sentence that is not earning the mark. The pool argument matters too: accepting live video means choosing from everyone who has taught that specific MYP subject group against its own criteria, not only from those willing to drive to Al Wasl at 4.30pm.

Will IB Gram send an MYP tutor to our home in Al Wasl?+

No. IB Gram does not provide in-home visits anywhere in the UAE; home tutoring is a service we run only in India. Every UAE lesson is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with screen sharing, a shared whiteboard and a session recording your child can revisit. We target the home-tutor phrasing because that is what parents search for, and then answer it honestly instead of implying a service we do not sell. The in-home market does exist in Dubai and is quoted at AED 180 to 500 an hour if you prefer that format.

How do the mandatory UAE subjects fit alongside eight MYP subject groups?+

They sit on top of them. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with KHDA requiring separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and calculating instructional time on a 40-minute lesson unit. With eight MYP subject groups already in the timetable, the week is genuinely full. That is the practical reason one protected weekly hour on a named criterion works better than an ambitious multi-session plan.

Do MYP interdisciplinary units really affect my child's grade?+

They are assessed against their own separate criteria on disciplinary grounding, synthesising and reflecting, and they are reported. Students routinely treat them as a lighter task because they do not belong to a single subject, then lose marks on exactly the reflective and synthesising elements the unit exists to test. Prepare them the way you would prepare any assessed task: read the criteria, check what evidence each one needs, and make sure the written response addresses all of them rather than describing the activity that was done.

Is a tutor allowed to tutor my child if they teach at their school?+

Treat it as an arrangement to avoid. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for Abu Dhabi private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit carries a code of conduct that also bars serving students affiliated with their own school. That is press-reported and worth verifying against the current policy document, but the direction is unambiguous. Separately, any private tutor needs the MoHRE permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, which is granted free of charge for two years.

Find the criterion letter, then book the trial

The useful first step costs nothing. Find a recent marked MYP task and look for the criterion levels on it, A to D, each out of 8. Identify the lowest one. Then ask your child's coordinator for the descriptor table and read the level immediately above where your child sits. That paragraph is the whole of the work in front of you, and it is usually narrower than a parent expects. Book a free trial lesson on that same task sheet and watch whether the tutor can explain the difference in a way your child recognises. Lessons run online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time, around the Al Wasl school run.
