IGCSE Home Tutor in Al Wasl

Families searching for an IGCSE home tutor in Al Wasl usually have a villa, a dining table and two or three children at different stages, and they are picturing one person arriving on a Tuesday to handle all of it. This page takes that picture apart honestly: what the in-home market on this corridor charges, what it costs per child, what the neighbouring districts offer that Al Wasl does not, and why IB Gram teaches these students online instead.

IB & IGCSE in Al Wasl

The villa, the dining table and the arithmetic underneath

Al Wasl is a villa and compound district running along Al Wasl Road, close to the Al Safa school cluster and a few minutes from Jumeirah and City Walk. Households here are often larger than in the apartment districts nearby, with two or three school-age children at different stages, and the mental image behind this search reflects that: a tutor who comes to the house, works at the dining table, sees one child and then the next, and solves the week in a single visit. It is an appealing picture and it is worth examining on the numbers before anybody commits to it.

The published rates in this market are the place to start, because the per-child figure is what actually decides a household budget. In-home one-to-one work in Dubai is quoted at AED 180 to 350 an hour in Bestimate's 2026 rate table, with independent home tutors quoting AED 200 to 500, and monthly in-home packages advertised at AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour sessions. Qualified subject tutors working online sit at AED 150 to 300. For one child, the in-home premium is a single journey. For two children in different subjects it is two journeys by two different specialists, or one generalist covering both, which is the compromise families make without noticing they have made it.

That compromise is the real cost. An IGCSE candidate is entered for eight to ten subjects across one or two examination boards, and the subjects that genuinely need paid teaching are rarely the same for two siblings. A single visiting tutor who can cover Year 8 mathematics and Year 11 chemistry to specification level is an unusual person; what families more often get is somebody competent in one and approximate in the other. The approximate half is the half that was paid for at a premium, and it is the half that does not move a grade.

IB Gram's position, stated at the top. Tuition for UAE families is delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. There are no home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India. An Al Wasl household therefore gets a different specialist per child per subject, each matched on the specification rather than on willingness to drive, and two children can be taught back to back on the same evening by two different people without anyone arranging a route. The comparison is laid out below with the published figures attached so a family can disagree with the conclusion if they want to.

What follows is the detail an Al Wasl parent can use today: how this district genuinely compares with the three next to it, the practicalities of in-home tutoring that nobody writes about, the per-child cost arithmetic for one, two and three children, how to triage eight to ten subjects down to a fundable list, how tuition centres and school clinics fit in, what to ask any tutor before the first session including the permit question, and the limits of what we will claim.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

An Al Wasl household with several children is usually spanning three or four stages at once. These are the stages, with what each one genuinely needs bought and what it does not.

KS3Ages 11-14

Years 7 to 9, before the IGCSE course

Content-led teaching with internal assessment, and no external examinations. Almost nothing here is irreversible, which makes it the cheapest stage at which to fix anything and the stage most often over-tutored. A younger sibling receiving weekly sessions because an older one needs them is a common and avoidable line in a household budget.

In this corridor the one genuinely consequential thing in these years is the evidence that feeds the Year 9 or Year 10 tier decision in mathematics and the sciences. A single diagnostic session in Year 9 is worth more than a term of weekly ones, because it addresses the decision rather than the term, and the decision has a shadow that reaches sixth form.

IGCSEAges 14-15

Year 10, the first IGCSE year

The two-year course starts, tier placements are decided and the evidence for them accumulates. Cambridge syllabuses in mathematics and the sciences run Core and Extended routes; Pearson Mathematics A runs Foundation and Higher tiers. The route determines which papers are sat and which grades can be awarded.

Al Wasl families consistently start support in Year 11 and consistently wish they had started in Year 10, and the reason is tiering rather than content. A ceiling set on an entry form cannot be lifted by a tutor later. Ask the school which tier each science and mathematics entry sits in, what evidence it rests on, and when the window to revisit it closes.

IGCSEAges 15-16

Year 11, the examination year

Mocks in winter and often again in spring, entry deadlines settled, practical components to prepare, then the series itself. Eight to ten subjects, six or more science papers for a separate-science candidate, and a revision calendar that cannot be completed, which makes subject triage the central decision of the year.

This is the year the search for a home tutor usually happens, and it is the year in which the one-visit model fails hardest. A Year 11 candidate needs specification-specific help in two subjects and a written timetable in the rest; a generalist covering four subjects at a premium rate is the most expensive way to buy the least useful version of that.

MOEAt the end of school

Ministry of Education equivalency

The federal process that recognises a foreign secondary certificate. For the British track a student must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, and submit proof of one accredited Advanced Level subject at E or two Advanced Subsidiary Level subjects at the same grade.

Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects, which matters in Dubai where both are mandatory in every private school. One competitor ranking for these searches states six subjects, which does not match the published rule. IB Gram neither performs equivalency nor guarantees any outcome in it, and no tutoring is required for it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The IGCSE subjects an Al Wasl household is most often juggling, with a straight answer on whether each one usually justifies a paid hour.

Mathematics

Cambridge 0580 or 0607 · Pearson 4MA1

Almost always worth funding where there is a weakness, because algebraic fluency underpins the sciences as well, and because tier placement rests on it. The specific gain is speed: a student who rearranges an equation slowly loses marks across four subjects, not one. Establish which of the three specifications applies before the first session.

Chemistry

Cambridge 0620 · Pearson 4CH1

The science most worth funding if only one can be. The quantitative chain from moles through concentration to titration arithmetic breaks at a link the student cannot locate alone, and a revision guide will not find it. One diagnostic session usually does, which makes this a short intervention rather than an open-ended one.

Physics

Cambridge 0625 · Pearson 4PH1

Responds to short frequent practice on formula handling, units and graph reading rather than to long sessions, which is a scheduling fact worth knowing. Electricity and the wave vocabulary account for most losses. Often addressable with one block of work plus a written practice schedule rather than weekly hours all year.

Biology

Cambridge 0610 · Pearson 4BI1

The highest recall volume and the subject least likely to need a tutor. A structured retrieval timetable moves biology more reliably than weekly sessions do. What does need teaching is command-term discipline and the data-interpretation questions, which surprise students who treated the subject as memorisation.

English Language

Cambridge 0500 or 0510 · Pearson 4EA1

Frequently requested and frequently the wrong purchase. Marks move on structure, on answering the question asked and on timing rather than on vocabulary or reading more widely. Two or three sessions on essay structure plus marked timed practice usually achieves what a term of weekly conversation does not.

Combined and double-award science

Cambridge 0653 or 0654 · Pearson 4SD0

The route for students taking science as one or two subjects. Content is reduced rather than easier and the revision calendar is genuinely lighter, which is sometimes the right answer for a candidate carrying ten subjects. Past-paper practice must come from the combined specification, not from the separate-science papers.

Business, Economics and ICT

Cambridge 0450, 0455, 0417 · Pearson 4BS1, 4EC1, 4IT1

Case-study subjects where the technique is applying terminology to the specific scenario rather than reciting it. That is teachable in a small number of sessions and then practised alone, which makes these poor candidates for weekly year-long support and good candidates for a short block.

Modern languages

French, Spanish, Arabic as a first or additional language

The one area where regular short sessions genuinely beat blocks, because speaking and listening need frequency. Availability varies by language and level, and Arabic at a high level is better served in Dubai than in most markets. Oral components need a tutor who will conduct them rather than discuss them.

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies

KHDA requirement · all Dubai private schools

Mandatory in every Dubai private school regardless of licensed curriculum, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab pupils and prescribed languages of instruction. They occupy real homework time in an examination year and are excluded from the Ministry of Education's five-subject equivalency count.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Four arrangements an Al Wasl household is choosing between, described including the ones IB Gram does not sell. All of ours run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.

One specialist per child per subject, online

What IB Gram delivers. Each child is matched to a tutor on the specification their school entered rather than on geography, and two children can be taught back to back on the same evening by two different specialists without anyone arranging a journey. Market rate for qualified subject tutors working this way is AED 150 to 300 an hour.

  • Matched on board, syllabus code and tier, not on driving distance
  • Different specialist per child, scheduled on the same evening if wanted
  • A session moves within the week when a mock timetable changes

One visiting tutor covering several children

Described because it is the model behind the search, not because we sell it. The appeal is one journey and one person; the cost is that the same tutor rarely knows Year 8 mathematics and Year 11 chemistry to specification level. Published in-home rates run AED 180 to 350 in Bestimate's 2026 table and AED 200 to 500 among independent tutors.

  • One journey, one relationship, one point of contact
  • Specification depth across several stages is the compromise
  • IB Gram does not provide home visits in the UAE; that service is India-only

Tuition centres and group classes

Several operate within reach of this corridor and the per-hour cost is lower, with the parent driving instead of the tutor. Group delivery teaches content a student has not been taught, which is sometimes exactly the need after a staff absence. It cannot provide the individual diagnosis that moves a Year 11 grade.

  • Lower cost per hour; ask the group size before comparing rates
  • Good for content gaps, weak for individual examination technique
  • Fixed timetable, so it competes with school revision sessions

School provision, which is already paid for

Most Dubai private schools run subject clinics, lunchtime help, after-school revision and past-paper libraries, and parents in this district routinely do not know what exists. One email to the head of year establishes it, and it frequently removes a third of the intended spend before any tutor is hired.

  • Ask what clinics exist and whether your child is on an intervention list
  • Ask whether the department marks past papers for individual students
  • Use it for content; buy paid hours for individual diagnosis

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Wasl

01

What an Al Wasl household is actually picturing

  • One visiting tutor means one journey and a compromise on specification depth
  • A half-hour added to a sibling's session is supervision billed as teaching
  • Back-to-back online sessions give each child a specialist without any travel

The search phrase describes a specific arrangement, and it is worth saying out loud because nobody in this market examines it. A tutor arrives at the villa on a weekday evening, works with the Year 11 for an hour at the dining table, then spends thirty minutes with the Year 8, answers a question from the Year 6 on the way out, and leaves. One journey, one invoice, one relationship, and a parent who can be in the kitchen rather than in a car. In a villa district with several children per household, that is a genuinely attractive proposition and it is why this search exists.

Three things about it do not hold up. The first is specification depth: the person who can teach Pearson 4CH1 chemistry to a Year 11 at grade-9 level is unlikely to be the same person who should be handling Year 8 mathematics, and a tutor who claims both across four curricula is describing availability rather than expertise. The second is pricing: published in-home rates in Dubai run AED 180 to 500 an hour against AED 150 to 300 online, and the premium is a car. The third is attention: a half-hour tacked onto the end of another child's session is supervision, not teaching, and it gets billed as the latter.

The alternative is less tidy and works better. Each child is matched to a specialist on the specification their school actually entered, the sessions sit back to back on the same evening if that suits the household, and nobody travels. The Year 11 gets somebody who knows the board; the Year 8 gets forty minutes aimed at one thing; the Year 6 probably needs nothing at all, which is the part of the conversation most providers will not have. The rest of this page sets out the comparison with the figures so the trade can be judged rather than taken on faith.

02

Al Wasl against Al Safa, Jumeirah 1 and City Walk

Four districts, all within about fifteen minutes of each other, and four separate searches that return four different pages. The table below sets out what genuinely differs for an IGCSE family, and the honest finding is that only two of the columns vary meaningfully: housing, which changes whether in-home tutoring is even practical, and the length of the school run. The supply of tutors who know a specific syllabus code at Year 11 level does not vary, because the four districts share Al Wasl Road, Jumeirah Beach Road and the same cluster of schools in Al Safa.

Al Wasl's distinctive feature in this group is household size and housing type. A villa has a room that can be used, which makes in-home tutoring physically possible in a way it often is not in a City Walk apartment with three children and one study. That is a real difference and it is the reason this district produces more of these searches than its neighbours do. It is also the reason the per-child arithmetic matters more here: the model being considered is usually a multi-child one.

What does not differ, and is worth checking rather than assuming, is the specialist pool. Dubai had 387,441 private-school pupils across 227 schools in 2024-25 offering seventeen different curricula. Filter for somebody who has taught a specific Cambridge or Pearson specification at Year 11 level, is free on a particular weekday evening, and will drive to this corridor, and the list is short in every one of these four districts. The practical test for any provider, including this one, is to ask how many of their tutors have taught your child's exact syllabus code in the last two academic years.

The practicalities nobody writes about: who is in the room

  • A tutor and a teenager should not be alone behind a closed door
  • Siblings are the main reason dining-table sessions underperform
  • Name the room, name the hour, and tell the other children it is not available
  • A headset and a defined hour handle interruption better than a shared table

In-home tutoring carries a set of domestic questions that no page in this market addresses, and they are worth thinking through whichever delivery model a family chooses. The first is supervision. A tutor working with a fifteen-year-old in a villa should not be alone with them behind a closed door, and the sensible arrangement is a room with a door open and an adult in the house. Families who have not considered this in advance tend to improvise, which is how a session ends up at the kitchen table with two siblings and a television nearby.

The second is attention. Siblings are the main reason a dining-table session underperforms: a Year 11 working on titration arithmetic with a Year 8 asking questions across the table is not having an hour of teaching. Where in-home tutoring works well, the household has set up a specific space, a closed hour and an understanding that the hour is not interruptible. That is achievable and it takes deliberate effort, and it is more effort in a house with three children than most families anticipate when they book.

Online delivery changes the shape of both problems rather than removing them. The session happens in a room the family chooses, with the door as open or closed as they prefer and a parent able to hear it from the next room, and the whole lesson is on a screen rather than in a private conversation. Siblings still interrupt, but a headset and a defined hour handle it better than a shared table does. The practical advice applies either way: name the room, name the hour, and tell the other children that it is not available. A family that does that gets more from a cheaper arrangement than one that does not gets from an expensive one.

04

The per-child arithmetic for one, two and three children

Household cost is the figure that decides this, and it is not the hourly rate. The table below works it through for one, two and three children using published Dubai market bands, because that is the calculation an Al Wasl family is doing in their head without the numbers in front of them. In-home one-to-one is quoted at AED 180 to 350 an hour by Bestimate's 2026 rate table and AED 200 to 500 by independent home tutors, with monthly in-home packages advertised at AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour sessions. Online qualified subject tutors sit at AED 150 to 300.

The arithmetic produces one counterintuitive result and one obvious one. The obvious one is that in-home costs more per hour. The counterintuitive one is that the in-home premium per child falls as the number of children rises only if a single tutor covers all of them, which is precisely the arrangement that compromises specification depth. If each child needs their own specialist, in-home means several journeys and the premium multiplies rather than dividing. Families usually solve this by accepting a generalist, and the saving is then paid for in the Year 11's chemistry grade rather than in cash.

Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session give the other useful frame: AED 240 to 600 for budget provision, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year work. A household funding one subject per child for two children is therefore looking at a mid-market figure in the low thousands per month, and funding four subjects across three children is looking at a figure that will not survive the term. That is the arithmetic behind the triage section below, and it is why the honest recommendation is almost always fewer subjects than a family came prepared to buy.

05

Nine subjects, one budget: the triage that has to happen first

An IGCSE candidate is entered for eight to ten subjects, and funding a weekly hour in each at the published band of AED 150 to 300 produces a figure no household should pay. More importantly, no Year 11 student can absorb it: a child with eight hours of tutoring a week on top of a full school timetable and mandatory Arabic and Islamic Education homework is not learning, they are attending. The first decision is therefore which subjects to fund, and it has to be made from marked work rather than from which subjects the student says they dislike.

The triage sorts subjects into three categories. Needs teaching: the student does not have the content or has a structural gap they cannot locate, which in this corridor is most often chemistry and mathematics. Needs timed practice: the student knows the content and loses marks to timing, command terms or carelessness, which is biology and the case-study subjects more often than not. Needs nothing: the student is secure and the anxiety belongs to the household rather than to the subject. Most Year 11 candidates end up with two in the first category, three in the second and the rest in the third.

The table below sets out how to tell which is which, using evidence a parent already has. The test is always the marked script rather than the predicted grade, because a predicted grade is a summary and a script is data. Where a student has not sat anything under timed conditions, that is itself the finding: the first purchase is a past paper and a mark scheme rather than a tutor. A provider who recommends weekly sessions in four subjects before seeing any marked work is not diagnosing anything.

06

Tuition centres, group classes and the provision you already pay for

  • Email the head of year: what provision exists, and is my child on an intervention list
  • Group classes are for content gaps, not for individual examination technique
  • Ask the group size before comparing a centre's hourly rate with one-to-one
  • Buy in order: school provision, then groups, then one-to-one diagnosis

Before buying one-to-one hours, two cheaper options deserve proper consideration. The first is the school. Dubai private schools are fee-paying, well resourced and inspected annually by KHDA, and most run subject clinics, lunchtime help, after-school revision and past-paper libraries. Parents in this district frequently do not know what exists because it was announced once in September. One email to the head of year, asking what is available in each subject and whether the child is on any intervention list, routinely changes the budget more than any rate negotiation.

The second is a tuition centre or group class, of which several operate within reach of this corridor. The per-hour cost is lower, the parent drives instead of the tutor, and the delivery is genuinely useful for one specific thing: content a student has not been taught, which happens after a staff absence or a mid-year move. What a group cannot do is read one student's own written answers each week and name the habit costing them marks, because those habits differ between students. Ask how many students will be in the room before comparing any rate.

The honest sequencing, then, is school provision first, group classes for content gaps second, and one-to-one for individual diagnosis third. A family that works through that order spends less and gets more than one that starts at the expensive end. It also means the paid hour, when it is finally bought, is aimed at the thing only a paid hour can do. A provider whose first recommendation is weekly one-to-one across several subjects has skipped two cheaper steps that would have worked, and the family will not discover that until February.

07

Verifying the person who will teach your child

  • MoHRE private tuition permit: free of charge, two years, Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • No fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted by anyone
  • Do not arrange private tuition by a teacher at the child's own school
  • Ask for board, code, tier, practical arrangement, and what they want to see first

Only one competitor page in the researched corpus touches licensing, in a single subheading, and it is the most useful check available to an Al Wasl parent. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation introduced the private tuition work permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and MoHRE's own service is called 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing', applied for through the ministry's smart app, website and e-services system with a two-working-day completion time listed. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18.

Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No schedule of amounts has been published, a figure circulating online could not be verified, and so none is quoted here. There is a second point on the same theme. Do not arrange for a child to be tutored privately by a teacher at their own school: the permit carries a code of conduct, and in Abu Dhabi ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit paid private tuition of students enrolled at the teacher's own school. That rule is press-reported and should be verified against the current ADEK document, but the principle is sound across the UAE and we do not make such arrangements.

Beyond the permit, four questions separate a specialist from a generalist and take two minutes. Which board and syllabus code have you taught this subject under, and in which of the last two academic years. Which tier, Core or Extended, Foundation or Higher. For a science, has the school entered a practical test, an alternative-to-practical paper, or a specification that examines practical skills inside the written papers. And what will you ask to see before the first session. A tutor who wants the marked script and the school's topic list is diagnosing. A tutor who asks only for the subject and the year group is not.

08

Online delivery from an Al Wasl address, and the limits

  • Online, one-to-one, Gulf Standard Time; UAE home visits are not offered
  • A different specialist per child, back to back on one evening if wanted
  • Coverage limits published by subject and tier before any payment
  • No regulator accreditation, no UAE premises, no guaranteed grades

Lessons for UAE families are delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, with the student's own script, the correct board's past paper and the published mark scheme on screen together. Nobody is sent to an Al Wasl address: IB Gram does not provide home visits anywhere in the UAE, and in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India. For a multi-child household the specific advantage is scheduling. Two or three children can each have a different specialist on the same evening, half an hour apart, and a cancellation or a mock timetable change moves one session rather than unpicking a route.

Availability is finite and we publish where. Mathematics and the sciences at Extended or Higher tier in a narrow weekday window may take several days to fill; less commonly taught languages and ab initio levels take longer. Standard subjects, the case-study options and English Language are usually matched in two or three days. When the first choice is not available we say so and name the alternative: a different hour with the right specialist, a tutor whose specialism is adjacent with the limitation stated, or a short wait. No competitor page in this market publishes a coverage limit at all, which is why this one is written down and can be held against us.

The claims this page declines to make. IB Gram is not approved, accredited, certified or licensed by KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge, Pearson or the IB organisation; a KHDA educational services permit belongs to training institutes with premises and we hold none. There is no IB Gram office, centre or branch in the UAE. We do not reproduce or supply syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables; we reference them and link the official source. We do not perform or guarantee Ministry of Education equivalency and do not suggest tutoring is required for it. And no tutor can guarantee a grade, because the board marks the papers and sets the boundaries after the examination.

Where we tutor

Al Wasl and the three districts it is weighed against

This is the comparison an Al Wasl family makes without writing it down. These are the districts, with what each genuinely offers that the others do not for an IGCSE household.

Al Wasl

Villas and compounds with the shortest school run in this group to the Al Safa cluster. Larger households, more siblings per family, and therefore more pressure on the one-visit model. The space for an in-home tutor exists here in a way it does not in the apartment districts, which is exactly why the question comes up.

Al Safa

The densest school cluster in the corridor, with both major examination boards represented across its campuses. A family here has the shortest commute of all four districts and the same small pool of specialists willing to travel, because it is the same road network.

Jumeirah 1

Established villas with the oldest British-curriculum provision nearby and well-understood option and tiering conventions among parents. Strong on local knowledge, no additional local supply of specification-specific tutors at Year 11 level.

City Walk

Low-rise apartments and townhouses immediately north, with no secondary campus inside the district. Families there face the same tutor catchment and a smaller practical case for in-home visits, because apartment living makes a quiet room and a spare hour harder to arrange.

Jumeirah 2 and Jumeirah 3

Villas running west along the coast with primary provision nearby and secondary a slightly longer run. Widening a search here adds housing and school options and does not add specification-specific tutors, since the same teachers already serve the whole corridor.

Umm Suqeim

Two substantial campuses including an IB continuum school, and the longest afternoon return in this group. Students travelling here from Al Wasl have less weekday evening left, which pushes sessions to 17:30 and makes weekend mornings the better slot for timed papers.

Al Manara and Al Quoz

Inland, with a mix of newer campuses and a different school profile. Relevant to an Al Wasl family mainly as an alternative school search area rather than as a source of tutors, and worth including if specification or board availability is the deciding factor.

La Mer and Pearl Jumeira

Coastal and residential with no secondary schools of their own. Included because Al Wasl families search the coast as part of the same mental map, and because the in-home travel premium quoted to these addresses is the highest in the group.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Wasl

Al Safa and Al Wasl campuses, the shortest run from this district

Both major examination boards appear across these schools and some split boards by subject. Establish the board, syllabus code, tier and practical paper from the school's option documentation before hiring anybody, and ask for the entry deadline in writing.

  • Jumeirah English Speaking School, Jumeirah
  • Jumeirah College, Al Safa
  • Jumeirah Primary School, Al Safa
  • Horizon English School, Al Safa
  • Safa British School
  • Latifa School for Girls, Al Safa

Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim and Al Sufouh campuses

The second ring, with IB continuum provision alongside British-curriculum schools and a longer afternoon return. Cambridge International Mathematics appears more often at the continuum schools, which matters to any tutor planning a mathematics programme.

  • Jumeirah Baccalaureate School, Al Safa
  • Emirates International School Jumeirah
  • Raffles World Academy, Umm Suqeim
  • Kings' School Dubai, Umm Suqeim
  • Dubai College, Al Sufouh
  • Dubai English Speaking College

Schools are named as context for the Al Wasl catchment and the boards available nearby. IB Gram has no affiliation with, endorsement from or partnership with any of them, and board choices should be confirmed with the school.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Email the school before you email us

Ask what subject clinics, revision sessions and past-paper provision exist for each child and whether they are on an intervention list. That answer routinely removes a third of the intended spend. Send us what came back and the plan is built around the gap rather than over the top of it.

  2. 02

Send the four facts per subject, per child

Board, syllabus code, tier and any optional papers, for every subject you are considering. All four are in the school's option documentation. A tutor without them will prepare the wrong papers very competently, and in a multi-child household the facts differ between siblings more often than families expect.

  3. 03

Triage from marked scripts, not predicted grades

One short diagnostic per candidate subject using work the student has actually had marked. The output is a ranked list in three categories: needs teaching, needs timed practice, needs nothing. In this corridor a typical Year 11 ends up with two in the first category and three in the second.

  4. 04

A free 55-minute lesson for the child and subject that ranked first

No charge and no card details. The tutor works from a past paper on the correct specification, watches the working rather than the answers, and writes a short note classifying the problem. Where two children both rank high, we say which one the first funded hour should go to and why.

  5. 05

Schedule siblings back to back, review at the mock

Different specialists, half an hour apart on the same evening, so one adult covers the whole household's tutoring from one room. At the mock each funded subject is reassessed: continue, move to timed practice only, or stop. A subject dropping out in February because it is done is the intended outcome.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The per-child arithmetic published

A table on this page works the cost through for one, two and three children using named published Dubai rates, because that is the calculation an Al Wasl household is doing anyway. Three of the six researched competitors in this cluster publish no price at all and two quote US dollars, which is not a currency a Dubai family transacts in.

A specialist per child rather than one generalist

The person who can teach a Year 11 a specific Pearson or Cambridge specification to the top grades is rarely the right person for a Year 8. Online delivery lets each child have their own, back to back on the same evening, which is the thing a single journey cannot provide at any price.

Advice on which child needs nothing

In a multi-child household the honest answer usually includes at least one child who does not need paid support. We say so. A provider that recommends sessions for every child in a villa is selling a package rather than diagnosing three students.

Cheaper options named first

School clinics and past-paper provision you already pay for, then group classes for content gaps, then one-to-one for individual diagnosis. Working through that order spends less and achieves more, and skipping the first two steps is the most common avoidable cost in this district.

The permit question made usable

The MoHRE private tuition permit, its two-year validity, its absence of a fee, the official application route and the categories eligible are all set out so a parent can check any tutor from any provider. We also say what IB Gram is not: unaccredited by every regulator and board, and holding no UAE premises.

Coverage limits written down

Higher and Extended tier mathematics and sciences in a narrow weekday window take days rather than hours to fill, and less common languages take longer. No competitor page in the researched set discloses a coverage limit anywhere, and several route UAE parents to overseas telephone numbers instead.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Wasl: your questions answered

We have a villa with space for a tutor. Does IB Gram still only teach online?+

Yes. IB Gram does not provide home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India. The space is genuinely an advantage for an Al Wasl household and it is the reason this search is more common here than in the apartment districts nearby, but it does not change the two things that decide outcomes: whether the tutor knows the exact specification, and whether each child gets their own specialist. Published Dubai in-home rates of AED 180 to 500 an hour sit above the AED 150 to 300 online band, and the difference is a journey rather than a better lesson.

Is an in-home IGCSE tutor better value for two children than for one?+

Only if one tutor can genuinely teach both, and that is the catch. Spreading a single journey across two children does reduce the premium per child, but two siblings rarely need the same subjects at the same stage, and a tutor who covers Year 8 mathematics and Year 11 chemistry to specification level is an unusual person. What families more often get is depth in one and approximation in the other, and the approximate half was the expensive half. If each child needs their own specialist, in-home means two journeys and the premium multiplies instead of dividing.

Who should be in the room when a tutor works with a Year 10 student?+

An adult should be in the house and the door should not be closed, whichever delivery model you choose. That is a straightforward safeguarding position and worth deciding in advance rather than improvising, because improvising is how a session ends up at the kitchen table with two siblings nearby. With online delivery the lesson happens in a room the family picks, audible from the next room, and the whole session is on a screen. Either way the practical advice is the same: name the room, name the hour, and tell the other children that the hour is not available.

Does an Al Wasl address get us a wider choice of IGCSE tutors than City Walk would?+

No. The two districts sit on the same road network, feed the same school cluster in Al Safa and therefore draw on the same group of teachers. What an Al Wasl villa does change is whether an in-home visit is practical at all, which is a real difference and the reason this question comes up here more than next door. The pool of people who have taught a specific Cambridge or Pearson syllabus at Year 11 level and are free on a particular evening is short in both districts. Ask any provider how many of their tutors have taught your child's exact code recently.

How many of our child's nine IGCSE subjects actually need a tutor?+

Usually two. Triage from marked scripts, not predicted grades, sorts subjects into three categories: needs teaching, where content is missing or a structural step is broken and the student cannot locate it; needs timed practice, where the content is known and marks go to timing, command terms or carelessness; and needs nothing. In this corridor a typical Year 11 candidate ends up with two subjects in the first category, three in the second and the rest in the third. Funding four or more weekly is almost always a sign that the triage has not been done.

Is a tuition centre in this corridor cheaper than one-to-one for IGCSE?+

Per hour, yes, and the parent drives instead of the tutor. A group is genuinely useful for content a student has not been taught, which happens after a staff absence or a mid-year move. What it cannot do is read one student's own written answers each week and name the specific habit costing them marks, because those habits are individual: state symbols for one student, command-term discipline for another. Ask how many students will be in the room before comparing rates, and use groups for content gaps rather than for examination technique in Year 11.

What should we ask a tutor before the first session?+

Five things, and they take two minutes. Which board and syllabus code have you taught this subject under, and in which of the last two academic years. Which tier. For a science, has the school entered a practical test, the alternative-to-practical paper, or a specification that examines practical skills inside the written papers. Can you show your MoHRE private tuition work permit. And what do you want to see before we start. A tutor who asks for the marked script and the school's topic list is diagnosing; one who asks only for the subject and the year group is not.

Can our child's own class teacher tutor them privately?+

Do not arrange it. The MoHRE private tuition permit carries a code of conduct, and in Abu Dhabi ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tuition to students enrolled at their own school. That particular rule is press-reported and should be verified against the current ADEK policy document, but the principle holds across the UAE and the conflict of interest is obvious regardless of emirate. A teacher at your child's school can, of course, help your child during school hours through the clinics and intervention the school already provides, and that is free.

What happens if the tutor is unwell, or we travel over a school break?+

A session moves rather than cancelling, which is a practical advantage of online delivery rather than a claim about teaching. A family travelling for a school break takes the slot with them as a time-zone adjustment, and a tutor unavailable one week is covered by moving the session within the week rather than losing it. Over a thirty-week year that difference is typically several sessions kept, which is worth more in cash terms than most hourly-rate negotiations achieve and considerably more in continuity, which is where most of the value in a two-year course sits.

Do tutors charge more for Year 11 than for Year 10?+

The published Dubai bands do not generally separate the two: qualified subject tutors online are quoted at AED 150 to 300 and specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above across IGCSE work. What changes is the number of hours a plan needs and the scarcity of good slots. In February and March the early-evening hours fill and the tutors with current specification experience are already committed, so a Year 11 family booking late pays the ordinary rate for a worse hour. Starting in Year 10 is also cheaper in total, because tier decisions can still be influenced then.

How can we tell whether a tutor actually knows the specification?+

Ask them something only somebody who has taught it would know. For a Cambridge science, which paper the school has entered for the practical component and what the difference means for preparation. For mathematics, whether the student is on 0580, 0607 or 4MA1 and what changes between them. For any subject, which topics the specification places in which paper. A tutor who answers those without looking anything up has taught the course. One who says the subject is the subject regardless of board is describing general competence, which is not what a Year 11 candidate needs.

Can siblings in Year 8 and Year 11 share one tutor?+

They can share a provider and should not share a session or, usually, a tutor. The content, the pace and the target are different, and a shared hour becomes supervision of one child while the other is taught. The arrangement that works in a multi-child household is different specialists scheduled back to back on the same evening, which online delivery makes trivial because nobody is travelling between them. One adult then covers the whole household's tutoring from one room, which is the practical benefit families were hoping a single visiting tutor would deliver.

Is it worth paying for English Language tutoring at IGCSE?+

Often not in the form families imagine. Marks in English Language move on structure, on answering the question that was asked, and on timing, rather than on vocabulary or reading more widely. Two or three sessions on essay and response structure, followed by timed practice marked against the specification's own criteria, typically achieves what a term of weekly discussion does not. Where a student is working in English as an additional language and is entered for a first-language specification, that is a different situation and regular sessions are justified; establish which specification applies before deciding.

What does a trial lesson actually prove?+

Less than families hope and more than nothing. It shows whether the tutor and the student can work together, whether the tutor watches the working rather than marking answers, and whether they can name the problem precisely by the end of the hour. It cannot show whether marks will move, because that takes four or five sessions and at least one marked paper. The useful output of a trial is the written note afterwards: if it classifies the problem specifically and says what would change in a term, the tutor is diagnosing. If it is encouraging and vague, it is not.

If we can only fund one subject, which should it be?+

Mathematics or chemistry, in most cases in this corridor, and for different reasons. Mathematics because algebraic fluency carries into the sciences, so one subject's worth of work raises marks in three or four papers, and because tier placement rests on it. Chemistry because the quantitative chain breaks at a link the student cannot find alone and a single diagnostic session locates it, which makes it a short intervention with a large effect. The wrong answer is to fund the subject the student complains about most, which is usually the one they are avoiding rather than the one costing the most marks.

Work out the household plan, not just the tutor

Send the school, the year group, and the board, syllabus code and tier for each subject you are worried about, for each child. Tell us what the school already provides. We will triage from marked scripts rather than predicted grades, say which child and which subject the first funded hour should go to, and name the children who do not need paid support at all. The first 55-minute lesson carries no charge and takes no card details, and siblings can be scheduled back to back with different specialists on the same evening. The cost tables above are published so an Al Wasl family can check the arithmetic themselves.
