IB PYP Science Tutor in Dubai

An IB PYP science tutor in Dubai costs less per hour than a Diploma specialist and is a different job entirely. Market rates for qualified primary teaching online run roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour; a visiting tutor in Dubai costs AED 180 to AED 500 once travel is priced in. Every IB Gram lesson is one-to-one on live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time, and built around the unit of inquiry your child's school is actually running this term.

  • Every lesson is live one-to-one video, timed to Gulf Standard Time
  • AED figures here are attributed market bands, not an IB Gram price list
  • The tutor explains and questions; your child records and writes it up
  • One free 45-minute trial lesson per family, with no card details taken

What primary science support costs in Dubai, and what moves that number

Nobody in this market publishes a price for primary science. Three of the six pages that rank for Dubai tutoring queries quote no figure at all, and the two that do quote US dollars. So start with the hour. Across Dubai in late 2026, a university-student helper advertises from about AED 45 to AED 150, a qualified teacher working online sits between AED 150 and AED 300, a tutor who drives to your community charges AED 180 to AED 500 with the travel priced in, and a named or examiner-tier tutor can publish AED 650. Those are other providers' figures, dated and attributed in the table below. They are the market you are shopping in.

The second number is the one that decides whether the first one was worth paying. Primary science is not a syllabus with papers at the end of it. In the IB Primary Years Programme, science runs through the units of inquiry as conceptual content and as a set of skills: questioning, predicting, fair testing, recording, concluding. A Grade 3 child can score well on a worksheet about the water cycle and still believe that clouds are made of steam. A tutor who charges AED 220 an hour and leaves that belief intact has sold you nothing, however pleasant the hour was.

That is why a primary science hour is priced on a different thing from a Diploma hour. With a Diploma student you are buying content depth and examination technique against a published mark scheme. With a nine-year-old you are buying diagnosis. The teacher has to find the one sentence in your child's head that is wrong, build the correct chain of reasoning in the child's own words, and then get the child to write it down in a form a primary teacher would accept. A chemistry graduate who has never taught Year 4 can take an hour to discover that the problem is not science at all but the word 'because'.

Dubai adds three specific pressures to that. The emirate runs 227 private schools serving 387,441 students across seventeen curricula, and only about a fourteenth of that enrolment is on an International Baccalaureate programme, so an IB primary parent is a minority inside a majority-British and majority-Indian market. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees would not rise for 2026-27, which means household education budgets are, unusually, not being squeezed from that direction this year. And Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies are mandatory in every Dubai private school whatever its licensed curriculum, so a primary timetable is already fuller here than it would be in London or Mumbai.

What follows is the honest version. The AED bands with their sources. The four science strands and the misconception each one tends to leave behind. What really moves a quote up or down, with the question that tests each claim. Why your lesson runs on live video and what that saves you. And what the Year 6 step into MYP Sciences costs to close if you leave it until September.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

An IB primary parent in Dubai is making decisions that reach past primary. These are the programmes a Dubai science learner moves through, and what each one changes about the kind of support worth buying.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Science is not timetabled as a separate subject in most PYP schools. It is carried inside six transdisciplinary themes, of which 'How the world works' is the science-heavy one, and it is assessed formatively through the work your child produces rather than by examination. Teachers report against learning outcomes and the approaches to learning, so a report can run to several pages without a single mark on it. Content is organised around key concepts such as form, function, causation and change.

In Dubai the PYP sits inside a school that must also deliver Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and KHDA inspects the whole school annually on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak. Practically, that means your child's science week is shorter than the unit planner suggests, and an inspection report tells you about the school's teaching of science across a year group, not about your own child.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP Sciences is marked against four criteria, each out of eight: knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. The jump that catches Dubai families is not content but form. A child who has spent six years explaining ideas in conversation is suddenly marked on a written method, a table with units in the headers, a graph with a line of best fit and a paragraph that evaluates its own reliability.

Several Dubai schools run the full IB continuum, so a child can move from PYP to MYP without changing site. Others stop at Year 6, which means a transfer into a British Year 7 and a sudden split into Biology, Chemistry and Physics with separate teachers. The Dubai complication is timing: places in the continuum schools in Al Barsha and Mirdif move early, and the decision is usually made in the autumn of Year 5.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

The Diploma sciences each carry an internally assessed investigation worth a fifth of the final grade, plus written papers that reward precise command-term reading. Nothing about the Diploma needs to be bought at primary level. It matters here only because the skills that decide a Diploma science grade, mainly designing a fair test and writing an evaluation that names its own weaknesses, start forming in a PYP unit about melting ice.

Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, three of them International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places across the emirate. For a current PYP family that changes the odds on Diploma places in seven years' time, which is a reasonable thing to factor into a primary school decision and a poor reason to buy Diploma-level tutoring now.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE and Pearson International GCSE

The alternative route out of primary in Dubai, taken by a large share of the emirate's enrolment. Science is sat either as three separate sciences, each with its own syllabus code, or as Coordinated or Combined Science. Papers are tiered: Core caps the grade, Extended opens the full range. It matters to a PYP parent because a move out of the IB continuum at Year 7 or Year 10 lands here.

British-curriculum schools account for the largest share of Dubai private-school enrolment, so the IGCSE route is the one most of your child's neighbours are on. If you expect to transfer, the practical gap to close is written scientific method and the use of standard measurement, both of which a PYP child can practise years earlier at no extra cost.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Primary science in the PYP is organised by strand and by skill rather than by subject. These are the pieces a tutor can actually work on with a Dubai primary learner, and what tends to be wrong inside each.

Living Things

PYP early years to Year 6

Life cycles, habitats, classification, plant structure and, in the upper primary years, human body systems. The recurring problem is agency: children explain biology as though organisms choose. Seeds 'decide' to grow, plants 'eat' soil. A session replaces the story with a chain the child can say out loud, then checks it against a labelled diagram they draw themselves.

Materials and Matter

PYP early years to Year 6

Properties of materials, solids, liquids and gases, mixing, dissolving, and reversible against irreversible change. Dissolving and melting collapse into one idea in most primary heads, and sugar stirred into water is widely believed to be gone. A kitchen scale and two weighings fix that in ten minutes, because the child sees conservation of mass rather than being told about it.

Forces and Energy

PYP Year 1 to Year 6

Push and pull, friction, magnetism, light, sound, simple circuits and energy transfer. Two beliefs survive almost every primary school: heavy things fall faster, and a battery holds electricity that is used up and disappears. Both are testable at home with objects a Dubai family already owns, which is why this strand works unusually well over video.

Earth and Space

PYP Year 2 to Year 6

Day and night, the seasons, the water cycle, rocks and soils, and weather. The seasons are the single most persistent error in primary science: children say summer is hotter because the Earth is closer to the sun, which in a Gulf climate is reinforced by lived experience. A lamp, a tilted globe and a screen share settles it.

Scientific Inquiry and Fair Testing

All PYP year groups

Asking a testable question, predicting with a reason, changing one variable, keeping the rest the same, and concluding from the measurement rather than from the expectation. This is the skill the MYP will mark and the PYP only reports on, so it is the highest-value thing a primary tutor can build. Most children can run a test and almost none can say what they held constant.

Measurement, Tables and Graphs

PYP Year 2 to Year 6

Reading a scale, choosing a sensible unit, repeating a reading, putting units in a table header rather than in every cell, and plotting with the independent variable on the horizontal axis. It looks like maths and is marked as science. A child who writes '14' with no unit loses the mark in the MYP and is simply corrected in the PYP, which is why it is never fixed.

Explanation Writing and Science Vocabulary

PYP Year 1 to Year 6

Turning a correct idea into a sentence a teacher can credit. The usual blocker is the connective: 'because', 'so that' and 'which means' are the difference between a description and an explanation. For English-as-an-additional-language learners, who are a large part of Dubai's primary intake, this is where the science mark is actually lost.

Design, Technology and Making

PYP Year 1 to Year 6

Building something to meet a stated need, testing it, then changing one feature and testing again. Dubai schools often run this inside 'How we organise ourselves' or a makerspace slot. The tutoring value is the iteration loop, because children build once, declare success and stop, which is exactly the habit the MYP design and evaluation criteria penalise.

Mathematics Inside Science

PYP Year 3 to Year 6

Averages from repeated readings, simple ratios, estimating before measuring, and reading between the marks on a scale. A surprising number of primary science errors are arithmetic errors wearing a lab coat. Diagnosing which of the two is failing takes one session and saves a term of the wrong support.

PYP Exhibition Research Skills

Final PYP year

Choosing a line of inquiry narrow enough to answer, finding a source a ten-year-old can actually read, saying what the source is and who wrote it, and separating what was found from what was thought. A tutor may teach all of that. A tutor may not choose the question, write the text or make the slides, and this page says so for a reason.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Primary science support comes in a small number of sensible shapes. Picking the wrong one is the commonest way a Dubai family spends money without changing anything.

Weekly 45 minutes, one-to-one on live video

The default for a child between Year 1 and Year 5. Forty-five minutes is long enough to run a short fair test, talk through what happened and write two sentences about it, and short enough that a primary learner is still present at the end. The slot stays the same each week, in Gulf Standard Time, so it survives the school term rather than being renegotiated.

  • Same tutor, same weekday, same time, booked term by term
  • Agenda set by your child's current unit of inquiry
  • A short written note after each session saying what was taught and what was still wrong
  • Rescheduling the same week is usually possible, because nobody is travelling to get there

Unit-linked block before a summative task

Four to six sessions mapped onto one unit of inquiry, timed to finish a week before the summative assessment or the student-led conference. Useful when a report has flagged one area and the family does not want an open-ended commitment. The block starts with the school's central idea and lines of inquiry, and ends with the child explaining the unit back without notes.

  • Scoped to one unit, with a stated finish date
  • First session is diagnosis, not teaching
  • Written handover at the end so the next unit does not start from zero
  • Costed as a block rather than per hour, so the planning time is visible

Exhibition-year research and presentation support

For the final primary year only. The work is skills teaching: narrowing a line of inquiry, judging whether a source is usable, structuring a talk, rehearsing the questions an adult audience will ask. The boundary is stated in advance and in writing, because the Exhibition is assessed as the child's own work and a tutor who crosses that line creates a problem for the school rather than solving one for you.

  • The child chooses the question; the tutor stress-tests it
  • Source evaluation taught with sources the child found
  • Presentation rehearsal with recorded playback
  • Nothing written, designed or produced by the tutor at any point

Holiday intensives across the UAE summer break

Dubai's summer break runs long enough for a primary child to lose fluency in measurement and written method. Two or three short sessions a week through July and August hold the ground rather than teaching new content, and they are the cheapest hours in the year to buy because nothing is urgent. Families moving schools in September use this slot to close a method gap before term starts.

  • Shorter and more frequent than term-time sessions
  • Focused on method and vocabulary, not new units
  • Scheduled around travel, including sessions from another timezone
  • Block prices in this market are typically discounted against the weekly rate

01

What a Dubai parent is actually buying when they search for a PYP science tutor

An IB PYP science tutor in Dubai is a primary teacher who works inside your child's current unit of inquiry and is paid to find and fix a specific misunderstanding. Market rates for that, online and one-to-one, run roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour at the qualified-teacher tier as of October 2026. IB Gram delivers it as live video, one-to-one, in Gulf Standard Time. We do not offer home visits in the UAE; that is a service we run only in India, and this page is explicit about it rather than quiet.

The search phrase hides a decision most parents have not consciously made. There are three different purchases sitting behind it. The first is homework company: somebody to sit with a child while the unit sheet gets finished. The second is content catch-up: somebody to teach the science the child missed because they joined in January from another system. The third is skill building: somebody to make a nine-year-old competent at fair testing and written explanation so the MYP does not come as a shock. All three are legitimate. They cost different amounts, they take different numbers of weeks, and only one of them changes anything after the tutoring stops.

Dubai makes the first purchase unusually tempting, because the city is full of capable graduates willing to supervise homework for AED 60 an hour and the result looks like progress. Books get finished. Worksheets come back complete. Nothing in the child's reasoning has moved. The test for whether you bought the third thing instead is embarrassingly simple: ask your child to explain the last unit to you without the book, and listen for whether they use the word 'because' correctly.

The rest of this page is written to make that decision cheaply. The AED bands are published with their sources so you can compare any quote you receive. The strand table names the misconception each area of primary science tends to leave behind, so you can test a tutor's diagnosis in one question. And the section on the Year 6 step tells you what the gap costs to close if it is still open when MYP Sciences starts.

02

What primary science support costs in Dubai, band by band

  • Attributed market bands, not IB Gram pricing, read October 2026
  • Travel is the single largest price driver in the in-home band
  • Top-of-market rates buy examination seniority a primary learner does not need
  • Divide any monthly package by the number of hours before comparing it to an hourly rate

Every figure in the table below was published by somebody else, and the right-hand column says who. None of them is an IB Gram price. We quote after a free trial lesson, because the honest answer depends on year group, how many weeks you want and whether the Exhibition is involved, and a fake single number would be less useful than the bands.

Read the bands as a function of two things: how much primary teaching experience you are buying, and whether anybody has to travel. The travel element is the largest single cause of price difference in this market. A tutor crossing Dubai at 4.30pm commits ninety minutes of their day to deliver sixty minutes of teaching, and that ratio is inside the AED 180 to AED 500 band whether or not it appears on the invoice. Online delivery removes it, which is why the qualified-teacher band online starts below where the in-home band starts.

The second pattern worth noticing is that the top of the market is a poor purchase at primary level. A tutor publishing AED 650 an hour is selling examination seniority. A seven-year-old who thinks dissolving and melting are the same thing does not need seniority; they need somebody who will put a kitchen scale on the table and weigh the glass twice. Spending at the top of the band in primary usually buys the wrong expertise at the right price.

A note on monthly packages, which is how a lot of Dubai providers prefer to sell. Advertised packages in this market include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Divide before you compare: the second of those is a higher hourly rate than it looks, and two hours is far too long for a primary science session regardless of price.

Science in the PYP lives inside the units, not on the timetable

If you ask a Dubai PYP school when science happens, you may not get a time. In most PYP schools science is not a standalone lesson. It is conceptual content distributed through six transdisciplinary themes, and it surfaces most heavily in 'How the world works' and 'Sharing the planet'. A unit begins with a central idea, breaks into lines of inquiry, and finishes with a summative assessment that may be a presentation, a model or a piece of writing rather than a test. The science sits inside all of that, which is why a parent can read a whole report and not know whether their child understands evaporation.

This has a direct consequence for tutoring. A tutor who arrives with a generic primary science scheme is working against your school rather than with it. The useful first question from any provider is not 'what year group?' but 'what is the current central idea, and what are the lines of inquiry?'. Those two sentences are usually on the school's parent portal or in the termly unit letter. Hand them over before session one and the first hour is teaching rather than archaeology.

The second consequence concerns what gets assessed. Because the PYP reports against learning outcomes and the approaches to learning rather than marks, the thing your child is graded on in practice is the quality of their thinking made visible: the question they asked, the way they planned the test, the record they kept, the explanation they gave. A tutor can work on every one of those directly. Content gaps close quickly at primary level. Skill gaps do not, and they are the ones that follow a child into the MYP.

Worth knowing about Dubai specifically: because KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies in every private school whatever its licensed curriculum, the transdisciplinary week in a Dubai PYP classroom carries more fixed subject time than the IB framework alone implies. Teachers compress. Units that run six weeks elsewhere run five here. If your child is one of the slower processors in the room, that compression is frequently the real problem, and no amount of extra science content fixes it. Pace does.

04

The four science strands and the misconception each one leaves behind

Primary science misconceptions are unusually well documented and unusually consistent. The same wrong ideas appear in a Grade 4 classroom in Al Barsha and in a Year 4 classroom in Manchester, because they are sensible inferences from everyday experience rather than carelessness. That consistency is useful to a parent: it means you can test whether a tutor knows the territory by asking what they expect to find before they have met your child.

The table below sets out the four content strands as Dubai PYP schools generally cover them, the belief that tends to survive each one, and what a single session can do about it. The third column is the diagnostic one. A tutor who can name the misconception is a tutor who will look for it. A tutor who talks only about 'building confidence in science' will reteach the unit and leave the belief untouched.

The fifth row is the one that matters most over a child's school career. Scientific inquiry is a skill, not a topic, and in the PYP it is reported on rather than marked. It arrives in the MYP as two of the four assessment criteria, each worth eight marks, and by the Diploma it is a fifth of the grade. A child who learns at nine to change one variable and keep the rest the same is being given something that pays for a decade. That is the single best use of a primary science hour in this market, and almost nobody sells it, because it is harder to demonstrate to a parent than a finished worksheet.

One caution on how to use this table. Do not read it to your child as a list of things they have wrong. Primary misconceptions are dislodged by evidence the child collects, not by correction from an adult, and a nine-year-old told they are wrong about the seasons will simply learn to repeat the right words. The test of whether a misconception has actually gone is whether the child can predict correctly in a situation they have not seen before.

05

Doing real science over live video with what a Dubai kitchen already contains

  • Apparatus list sent the day before, drawn from ordinary household items
  • The child handles the equipment and reads the measurement, not the tutor
  • No flames, no chemicals beyond vinegar and bicarbonate, nothing from a cleaning cupboard
  • Where an adult is needed for a step, the plan says so before the session starts

The objection parents raise most often about online primary science is practical work, and it deserves a straight answer rather than reassurance. A video lesson is not a school laboratory and nobody should pretend otherwise. What it is, for primary science specifically, is better than most parents expect, because almost all PYP science practicals use household objects in the first place. Dubai apartments and villas contain everything the four strands need: a kitchen scale, measuring jugs, ice, salt, a torch, a few magnets, string, paper, a phone camera and a set of identical glasses.

The working method is simple and it changes who does the work. The tutor does not demonstrate while the child watches. The child sets the test up on their own table with the camera pointed at it, the tutor asks what is being changed and what is being kept the same, and the child takes the readings and says them out loud. This is the opposite of a classroom practical, where one confident child usually handles the apparatus and the rest observe. A one-to-one video session makes passivity impossible, which is the real argument for it at primary level.

There are genuine limits and it is better to name them. Anything requiring a flame, a chemical beyond kitchen vinegar and bicarbonate, a microscope or a sealed electrical supply is out. Dissection is out. Precision measurement below a gram or a millimetre is out. For a PYP child none of those exclusions bites, because the strands do not require them. By MYP Sciences they begin to, and that is one of the honest reasons a secondary science student needs their school laboratory and not only a tutor.

A short safety note that matters in a Dubai household. Sessions never involve the child using the hob, hot water above hand temperature, sharp blades or anything from a cleaning cupboard. Where a step needs an adult, the session plan says so in advance so a parent or a household helper can be nearby for two minutes rather than for the whole lesson. Apparatus lists go out the day before, so nothing is hunted for during paid time.

06

Seven things that move a Dubai primary science quote, and the question that tests each

Quotes for primary tutoring in Dubai vary by a factor of ten for work that looks identical in an advert. Most of that spread is explicable, and every item in the table below is something you can ask about on a phone call before any money moves. The fourth column is the point: each question has an answer that either lands immediately or does not, and a provider who cannot answer in a sentence is usually not pricing what they think they are pricing.

The item parents underestimate is planning time. A tutor who reads your school's unit planner, central idea and lines of inquiry before the first session is spending unpaid time to make the paid time work. Some providers bill that visibly, some absorb it into the hourly rate, and some simply do not do it. All three are defensible positions. What is not defensible is a provider who claims to plan from the school's unit and then opens a generic workbook in session one, which you will know about within ten minutes.

The item parents overestimate is the sibling discount. Two children in the same household share the administration of a booking and almost none of the teaching, so an honest household rate is modest. A provider offering half price for a second child is either padding the first price or planning to teach two different year groups in one session, which at primary level produces two half-taught children rather than one well-taught one.

Finally, the Exhibition premium is real and it is not about difficulty. The final primary year carries an assessed piece of work that must be the student's own, and supervising that properly means knowing exactly where teaching stops. A tutor who charges more for Exhibition-year support and can tell you in advance what they will refuse to do is pricing judgement. A tutor who charges the same and offers to 'help put the presentation together' is cheaper for a reason you do not want.

A tutor driving across Dubai against 45 minutes on live video

This page targets a search a lot of Dubai parents type, and some of them mean a person in the room. The honest position is worth stating in full. IB Gram does not send a tutor to a UAE address; home visits are a service we run only in India, and nothing on this page should be read as an offer of one. What we run for Dubai families is one-to-one live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time, with the same tutor each week. The comparison below is not a sales argument dressed as a table; the in-home option wins two of the five rows.

Where a visiting tutor genuinely wins is physical presence with a very young or very distractible child, and the ability to look at a messy exercise book without anybody photographing it. For a child in FS2 or Year 1 who cannot yet read independently, an adult in the room is a real advantage and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. By Year 3 the advantage has usually inverted, because what the child needs is the right teacher rather than the nearest one.

Where online wins is tutor matching and schedule survival. The pool of people who can teach PYP science well and will drive to Dubai Investments Park for a 4.30pm slot is small. The pool who can teach it well on video is not. Over a term, the second difference compounds: a session that needs no travel gets rescheduled inside the same week when a swimming gala appears, and a session that needs a car across Al Khail Road at 4pm is usually lost.

On cost, the arithmetic is not subtle. The Dubai in-home band published by other providers runs AED 180 to AED 500 an hour with travel inside it. The online qualified-teacher band runs AED 150 to AED 300. For a family budgeting a fixed monthly figure, that difference is typically two or three extra sessions a term, or the same number of sessions with a better-matched teacher. Both are better outcomes than a shorter commute for an adult who is not your child.

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies around a primary science week

Dubai parents often discover the mandatory subjects only when a report arrives with an Arabic grade on it. The federal position is that private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, and must follow the Ministry's general regulations. KHDA's own mandatory-subject guidance requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social and Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with those requirements implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year.

Two details in that guidance change how a primary week actually feels. First, schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes for the two groups are prohibited because the curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ. Second, the required instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided the weekly total is met, and the guidance advises that any mandatory subject lesson runs at least 25 minutes. That is a real block of fixed time inside a transdisciplinary timetable.

KHDA also requires Standard Arabic as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education and for Arabic as a first language, and Arabic as the primary language for Social Studies for Arab students, with the school's licensed-curriculum language used for non-Arabs in Islamic Education and in moral, social and cultural studies. And teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic are required to hold appropriate KHDA approval to teach those subjects. For the mandatory subjects, using different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is prohibited, which is why a tutor should work from the school's own material in these subjects rather than importing a scheme.

What this means for a science-focused tutoring plan is mostly about sequencing. If a child is struggling in Arabic as an additional language and in written science explanation at the same time, the language work usually comes first, because the science mark in a Dubai primary classroom is frequently lost in the sentence rather than in the idea. Where a family wants both, it is better bought as two specialists in two slots than as one hour that claims to cover both.

From PYP science into MYP Sciences: the Year 6 step and what it costs to close late

  • Write the method before the practical, not a description after it
  • Units belong in table headings, not in every cell
  • Independent variable on the horizontal axis, with a line of best fit
  • A conclusion names the data and then names what was unreliable about it

The handover out of primary is where most of the money in this market is eventually spent, and almost all of it is spent later than it needed to be. A PYP child arrives in MYP Sciences having spent years explaining ideas out loud and being reported on narratively. They are then marked against four criteria out of eight each, two of which are about designing an investigation and processing its results. The content is not the problem. The form is.

Concretely, here is what changes in the first term of Year 7 for a child who has come through the PYP. Method has to be written before the practical rather than described after it. Tables need units in the headings. Graphs need axes chosen by the student, with the independent variable on the horizontal axis and a line of best fit rather than dot-to-dot. Conclusions have to refer to the data and then say what was unreliable about it. Each of those is a small, teachable, mechanical skill. Together they are the difference between a 4 and a 6 in the first reporting cycle, and they have nothing to do with how well the child understands science.

The cost asymmetry is the argument for doing it early. In the final primary year, this is one strand of an ordinary weekly session at the primary rate, folded into work the child is already doing. In the first term of MYP, it becomes remedial work at the secondary rate, competing with new content, while the child is also adjusting to separate teachers and a timetable. Families who close the method gap in Year 6 generally stop tutoring in Year 7. Families who wait usually do not.

For Dubai families there is a second version of this step: leaving the IB continuum at Year 7 for a British-curriculum school, which is a common move here given how much of the emirate's enrolment is British-curriculum. That transition needs the same written method work plus a vocabulary shift, because the receiving school will split science into Biology, Chemistry and Physics with three teachers and an expectation of subject-specific terminology from the first week. The preparation is identical. Only the destination changes.

Where we tutor

Where Dubai PYP families book from, and what the school run does to a 4pm session

Session timing is the most practical thing an online tutor can get right, and it is set by where you live and which school your child attends. These are the communities most Dubai primary enquiries come from and what they mean for scheduling.

Al Barsha and Al Barsha South

The densest cluster of IB continuum schools in the emirate. Buses out of Al Barsha South can reach a Jumeirah villa well after 4pm in term time, so a Grade 2 child is frequently too tired for a 4pm slot; 5.15pm works far better and 6.30pm is too late.

Emirates Hills, The Meadows and The Springs

Long compound drives and a single gated entrance mean the gap between the bus arriving and a child sitting down is ten minutes, not two. Families here often prefer a 45-minute session at 5pm and a second shorter slot at the weekend rather than one long hour.

Mirdif

Short school runs and several IB continuum options nearby, so Mirdif families can genuinely start at 4pm. The constraint is the opposite one: siblings in different year groups and a single laptop, which is why back-to-back 45-minute slots are the common booking here.

Al Jaddaf and Dubai Healthcare City

Apartment living, so a quiet room for a science session has to be negotiated with the rest of the household. A headset and a cleared table matter more here than anywhere else in Dubai, and a 5.45pm slot after the younger sibling's bedtime routine tends to hold.

The Sustainable City and Dubai Investments Park

A long drive back from almost everywhere, which pushes sessions past 5.30pm during the week. These households are also the ones where an outdoor fair test is easiest to run, because the courtyards and the urban farm give a primary child something real to measure.

Umm Suqeim, Al Safa and Jumeirah

A mix of IB and British primary schools within a few minutes of each other, so cousins and neighbours are often on different curricula entirely. Parents here ask the most comparison questions, and the useful answer is usually about written method rather than content.

Dubai Hills Estate and Nad Al Sheba

Newer communities with newer schools and a lot of recent arrivals mid-year. A child who joined a PYP school in January from a different system is the typical enquiry, and the first session is usually diagnostic rather than taught.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

Close to several schools, so the commute is short and the 4pm slot is viable. Many families here are on a two-income schedule with no adult home before 7pm, which makes the weekend morning session the realistic one.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Al Barsha, Al Barsha South and Emirates Hills

The part of Dubai where an IB primary parent has the most choice and the most comparison to make. Several of these schools run the whole continuum from the early years to the Diploma, which changes the Year 6 conversation completely: the question becomes whether to stay rather than where to go.

  • Dubai International Academy Al Barsha
  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills
  • GEMS World Academy Dubai
  • Dwight School Dubai
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Bloom World Academy

Mirdif, Al Jaddaf and the southern communities

A spread-out cluster where a PYP family's nearest school and their chosen school are often not the same place. Journeys are longer, sessions start later, and the enquiries skew towards upper primary and the Exhibition year rather than the early years.

  • Uptown International School
  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai
  • Fairgreen International School
  • Greenfield International School
  • Raffles World Academy
  • Deira International School

Schools are named here as context for the Dubai primary market only; no affiliation, endorsement or relationship with any school or school group is implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the unit, not just the year group

The enquiry form asks for the current central idea and lines of inquiry, the school and the year group. Those three things decide which tutor is the right match far more reliably than a general statement that science is hard. If you do not have the unit letter to hand, the school's parent portal almost always does.

  2. 02

A free 45-minute trial lesson, one per family

The trial is a real diagnostic session, not a sales call. The tutor sets a short task from the current unit, watches how your child reasons through it, and ends by telling you plainly what they found. No card details are taken to book it and there is one trial per family.

  3. 03

You get the diagnosis in writing before you decide

After the trial you receive a short written note: what your child can do, the specific misconception or skill gap found, how many sessions the tutor thinks it needs and what they would work on first. If the answer is that tutoring is not the right purchase right now, the note says that instead.

  4. 04

Pick the shape, then lock the slot

Weekly 45 minutes, a unit-linked block, Exhibition-year support or a summer intensive. The slot is fixed in Gulf Standard Time and stays with the same tutor, because a primary child who has to rebuild rapport every fortnight makes slower progress than one who does not.

  5. 05

A short note after every session

Each session ends with two or three lines to you: what was taught, what the child could do unaided by the end, and what is still wrong. It is deliberately short enough to read on a phone and specific enough to raise at a parent-teacher meeting.

  6. 06

Review at six sessions, and say stop if it is time

At six sessions we review against the original diagnosis. Sometimes the answer is to continue, sometimes to switch to a different specialism such as Arabic or reading, and sometimes to stop because the gap has closed. A provider who never recommends stopping is not reviewing anything.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Primary teaching is treated as its own skill

A tutor who can carry a Diploma chemistry class is not automatically the right person for a seven-year-old. Matching for a PYP science enquiry starts from primary experience and the ability to teach through questions rather than explanation, then looks at subject depth second.

The AED figures on this page are somebody else's

Every rate quoted here is attributed to the provider that published it, with the month we read it. We do not publish an invented price list for primary science, and we quote only after a trial lesson has established what is actually needed.

The academic-honesty line is written down in advance

In the Exhibition year the work must be the student's own. A tutor teaches research skill, stress-tests the question and rehearses the presentation. A tutor does not choose the topic, write the text, make the slides or produce any part of the submission, and that boundary is agreed before the first session.

You are told when tutoring is the wrong purchase

Some primary science enquiries are reading enquiries, some are language enquiries and some are pace enquiries that a conversation with the class teacher would solve. The trial lesson exists partly to find that out, and the written diagnosis says so when it is the case.

Delivery is stated plainly, not implied

Lessons for UAE families are one-to-one on live video in Gulf Standard Time. We do not offer home visits in the UAE; that service exists only in India. No page on this site implies a tutor will arrive at a Dubai address, because none will.

The session is built around your school's unit

Tutors read the central idea and lines of inquiry before session one and work inside them. Where the school's sequence and the child's gap disagree, you are told which one the sessions are following and why, rather than discovering it from your child in week four.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What does an hour of IB PYP science support cost in Dubai at the moment?+

Published market rates in Dubai in October 2026 put a generalist homework helper at AED 45 to AED 150 an hour, a qualified teacher working online at AED 150 to AED 300, a tutor who travels to your community at AED 180 to AED 500 with travel inside the price, and a named or examiner-tier tutor as high as AED 650. Those are other providers' figures, attributed in the rate table on this page. IB Gram quotes after a free trial lesson, because the honest number depends on the year group, the number of weeks and whether the Exhibition year is involved.

Is a science specialist worth paying more for when my child is only nine?+

Usually not in the way parents expect. At primary level the scarce skill is not science depth but diagnosis: finding the one wrong sentence in a child's head and replacing it with evidence the child collected themselves. A primary-trained teacher with solid general science nearly always outperforms a subject graduate with no primary experience for a nine-year-old. Pay more for primary pedagogy, for planning against your school's unit, and for Exhibition-year judgement. Paying at the top of the Dubai market buys examination seniority, which is the wrong expertise for this age group however good it is.

My son's school teaches science inside units of inquiry, so what does a tutor follow?+

The school's current central idea and lines of inquiry, which are usually on the parent portal or in the termly unit letter. A good provider asks for those before the first session rather than asking only for a year group. Science in the PYP is distributed across six transdisciplinary themes, with 'How the world works' carrying the heaviest science content, so a generic primary science scheme will pull against what the class is doing. Hand over the unit letter and the first hour becomes teaching rather than guesswork about what your child is meant to be learning.

Which of the PYP science strands causes the most trouble in Dubai classrooms?+

Earth and space, specifically the seasons, is the most persistent. Children reason that summer is hotter because the Earth is closer to the sun, and a Gulf climate makes that inference feel obviously right. Materials and matter runs a close second, because dissolving and melting collapse into one idea and stirred sugar is believed to have gone. Forces produces the belief that heavy objects fall faster. All three are fixable in a session or two with household apparatus, provided the child collects the evidence rather than being told the correct answer.

Can practical science actually happen in a live video lesson?+

For primary science, yes, because the strands use household objects anyway. A kitchen scale, measuring jugs, ice, salt, a torch, magnets, string and a phone camera cover most of what a PYP unit needs. The method matters more than the kit: the child sets the test up on their own table with the camera on it, takes the readings and says them aloud, while the tutor asks what is being changed and what is being held constant. Flames, chemicals, microscopes and sealed electrical supplies are out, and none of the four PYP strands requires them.

Do we need to buy equipment before the first science session?+

No. An apparatus list goes out the day before each session and is drawn from what a Dubai household already owns: glasses of the same size, a kitchen scale, a measuring jug, ice, cooking oil, bicarbonate of soda, vinegar, a torch, tape and paper. If a session needs something genuinely unusual, it is swapped for something that is not. Nothing is bought, and nothing is hunted for during paid time. Where a step needs an adult nearby for two minutes, the plan says so in advance so somebody can be available.

How many sessions before a PYP report says something different?+

Report cycles are slow, so the report is a poor early signal. A specific misconception usually shifts in one to three sessions and is testable immediately: ask your child to predict what will happen in a situation they have not seen. A skill such as fair testing or writing a conclusion takes six to ten sessions to become automatic, because it has to survive a week without practice. If you want a faster read than the report, ask the class teacher at the next meeting whether the written explanations have changed.

Is group science tutoring cheaper than one-to-one for a Grade 4 child?+

Cheaper per hour and often more expensive per outcome. Groups of two to four work well for vocabulary, revision games and the social side of talking about science, and they are poor at diagnosis, because the whole value of a primary science session is finding the one belief this particular child holds. In a group the confident child handles the apparatus and the quiet one watches, which is the exact passivity a one-to-one video session makes impossible. For a stuck Grade 4 learner, fewer one-to-one sessions usually beat more group hours.

Does somebody teaching primary science privately in Dubai need a MoHRE permit?+

Yes. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone offering private tutoring without a permit is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no figure should be quoted at you. Applications go through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system.

How is science in the PYP different from science in a British primary school?+

Mostly in how it is organised and reported. A British primary school timetables science, teaches a defined national curriculum sequence and reports against age-related expectations. A PYP school distributes the same kind of content through transdisciplinary units, builds it around key concepts such as causation and change, and reports narratively against learning outcomes and approaches to learning. Children from both systems end up knowing similar science. The difference families notice on transfer is written method and subject-specific vocabulary, which the British route expects earlier and more formally.

Should we spend on science now or wait until the MYP starts?+

If the gap is skills rather than content, now is far cheaper. Writing a method before the practical, putting units in table headings, choosing axes and evaluating reliability are all mechanical skills that cost one strand of an ordinary primary session to build. The same work in the first term of MYP Sciences becomes remedial, is charged at secondary rates and competes with new content while the child adjusts to separate teachers. If the gap is pure content, waiting is defensible, because primary content gaps close quickly once the child is motivated.

What should I ask before agreeing an AED rate for primary science?+

Four questions sort the market quickly. Which year groups have you taught, and under which curriculum? Will you read our school's central idea and lines of inquiry before the first session? Is a 45-minute price three-quarters of your hourly rate, or close to the full hour? And in the Exhibition year, what will you refuse to do? Answers that arrive in a sentence tell you the provider has priced the work. Answers about confidence, passion and bespoke programmes tell you the hour has not been thought about.

Does the Dubai school fee freeze change what we should budget for tutoring?+

It changes the context rather than the tutoring price. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not increase for the 2026-27 academic year, under an economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion. For a household that had planned for a fee rise, that is unallocated budget rather than a reason to spend it. The sensible use of it at primary level is a short diagnostic block rather than an open-ended weekly commitment, because primary gaps are usually specific and close faster than a yearly plan assumes.

How do Arabic and Islamic Education lessons affect when a science session can start?+

They lengthen the fixed part of the school day rather than the school day itself. KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social and Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools whatever the licensed curriculum, with instructional time calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit and a recommendation that no mandatory lesson runs under 25 minutes. Schools absorb that by compressing transdisciplinary time, so children often arrive home with less consolidation than the unit plan implies. In practice it argues for a shorter, later session rather than an early long one.

What does the free trial science lesson actually cover, and is a card needed?+

It is 45 minutes, one per family, and no card details are taken to book it. The tutor sets a short task from your child's current unit, watches how they reason, probes one likely misconception and finishes by telling you what they found. You then get that in writing: what your child can do unaided, the specific gap, and how many sessions it is likely to need. If the honest answer is that tutoring is not what this child needs right now, the note says so and nothing follows.

Start with the diagnosis, then decide what the hour is worth

Primary science money is wasted in a specific and avoidable way: a pleasant hour that finishes the worksheet and leaves the wrong idea in place. The way to avoid it is to find out what your child actually believes before agreeing a rate. Book the free 45-minute trial, send us the current central idea and lines of inquiry, and you will get a written diagnosis you can use whether or not you book anything further. Lessons run one-to-one on live video in Gulf Standard Time, with the same tutor each week, and the AED bands on this page are the market you can measure any quote against.
