IB Physics Tutor in The Greens

An IB physics tutor in The Greens has to fit into a narrow afternoon. Secondary buses turn into Al Thanyah Third between roughly 15:30 and 16:30, homework starts, and the useful window is what is left. IB Gram matches your child with one specialist who teaches the 2023 Physics guide — Themes A to E, Paper 1A, Paper 1B and the scientific investigation — over live video, in Gulf Standard Time, at a slot that survives the school run rather than fighting it.

  • One named Physics specialist, not a general science tutor rotated weekly
  • Taught on the 2023 Physics guide, in which Paper 3 no longer exists
  • Live video lessons in Gulf Standard Time, never a home visit
  • A trial lesson before any payment, booked in your real afternoon slot

IB & IGCSE in The Greens

The real constraint in The Greens is the clock, not the subject

Parents in The Greens rarely start by asking whether their child needs help with Physics. They already know. What they ask is when a lesson could possibly happen. The Greens sits inside Al Thanyah Third, a low-rise grid of apartment blocks wrapped around Emirates Golf Club, with one artery in from Sheikh Zayed Road and another from Al Khail. Secondary school buses reach the community in a band that runs from about 15:30 to 16:30, depending on which school and which loop. By the time a fifteen-year-old has eaten, the afternoon is half gone.

That single fact decides more about tutoring outcomes here than any claim a provider can make about teaching quality. A session scheduled at 16:00 because it suited the tutor will be missed, moved or sat through in a daze roughly every third week. A session scheduled at 16:45, after the Dubai British School loop has cleared Al Thanyah, holds. The difference between those two bookings is the difference between twenty-eight lessons in a school year and eighteen.

Physics punishes gaps more than most Diploma subjects, which is why the timing matters this much. The 2023 course is cumulative: the kinematics and energy work in Theme A underpins the circular motion and gravitation in Theme D, and the wave treatment in Theme C reappears inside the quantum material in Theme E. A student who misses three consecutive weeks in February does not simply lose three weeks of content. They lose the scaffolding for the HL extension topics that arrive in the second year, and they discover it in a mock paper.

The other half of the problem is supply. The Greens has a dense population of international families and a thin population of people who have actually taught Diploma Physics. Chemistry and Maths tutors are findable within a short drive. A Physics specialist who can explain why a gradient of a velocity-time graph carries an uncertainty, and who knows that Paper 3 was retired with the 2023 guide, is a much rarer animal in any one neighbourhood. Searching by distance narrows the pool to whoever is nearby; searching by syllabus does not.

So IB Gram does the opposite of a proximity search. Lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time, and the tutor is chosen for the course your child is sitting rather than for the postcode they live in. Nobody drives anywhere. The afternoon window that exists after the bus is the window the lesson uses, and the specialist is the right specialist whether they are in Dubai, Mumbai or Manchester.

What follows is specific to this community: the schools The Greens feeds, the finish times those schools run, the realistic session windows that survive them, the assessment structure your child is being measured against, and the places Physics marks quietly leak away.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics sits at the end of a long run-up. A Greens student arriving in DP1 has usually come through MYP Sciences at Emirates International School Meadows or Dubai International Academy, or through IGCSE Physics at Dubai British School or Dubai College. Each route leaves a different gap.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme Physics

The two-year course assessed on the 2023 guide. Five themes — Space, time and motion; The particulate nature of matter; Wave behaviour; Fields; Nuclear and quantum physics — plus a compulsory scientific investigation worth a fifth of the grade. HL students take the same themes with additional depth and sit longer papers. Paper 1 splits into a multiple-choice section and a data-and-experimental section; Paper 2 is short answer and extended response.

Among the schools a Greens family realistically chooses between, Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills, Emirates International School Meadows and GEMS Wellington International School all run Diploma Physics. Cohort sizes at HL are small, often a single teaching group, which means a student who falls behind in Theme D has nobody sitting next to them in the same position to compare notes with.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1 to 5

Middle Years Programme Sciences

The feeder course for most IB Physics students. MYP Sciences is marked against four criteria — knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science — each scored out of eight. It builds experimental design and data handling early, but it carries very little of the algebraic manipulation that Diploma Physics assumes from week one.

Emirates International School Meadows and Dubai International Academy both run the MYP through to Year 11, so a large share of Greens students enter DP1 from criterion-based marking rather than from an examination. The jump that catches them is not the content. It is being asked to rearrange an equation under time pressure without a criterion rubric explaining what good looks like.

CPAges 16-19

Career-related Programme

A smaller IB route that pairs Diploma courses with a career-related study and a reflective project. A CP student may take Physics SL as one of their Diploma courses, which means the same papers and the same scientific investigation but a different surrounding workload and a different set of deadlines competing for the same afternoon.

The Career-related Programme is offered by only a handful of Dubai schools, so a Greens family on this route is usually travelling further for school than their neighbours. That longer journey compresses the available afternoon further, and it is the main reason CP Physics students here tend to book the Friday short-day slot.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

The IGCSE Physics run-up

Not an IB programme, but the course most British-curriculum Greens students arrive from. Cambridge 0625 and Pearson 4PH1 both build strong recall and formula handling. Neither asks a student to propagate an uncertainty through a calculation, and neither requires the extended written reasoning that Paper 2 rewards at Diploma level.

Dubai British School Emirates Hills, Dubai College and Kings' School Al Barsha all feed Greens households, and all run IGCSE before splitting towards A Level or the Diploma. A student moving from a grade 8 or A* in 0625 into Physics HL often meets their first real difficulty around uncertainties, which no IGCSE paper examined.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

A Physics tutor is useful in proportion to how precisely they can name what is going wrong. The units below are the teachable blocks of the 2023 course as a tutor plans them, rather than a chapter list, and each carries its own characteristic failure.

Theme A — Space, time and motion

SL and HL, with HL extension

Kinematics, forces, work, energy and momentum, then circular motion and, at HL, rotational dynamics and special relativity. The theme that everything later depends on. Students who cannot resolve a force on an incline reliably in DP1 will struggle with fields in DP2, because the geometry is the same problem in a different costume.

Theme B — The particulate nature of matter

SL and HL, with HL extension

Thermal physics, the gas laws, the kinetic model, and at HL the thermodynamic treatment with entropy. Marks here are usually lost to units and to confusing temperature with internal energy. The arithmetic is gentle, which makes students careless with it.

Theme C — Wave behaviour

SL and HL, with HL extension

Simple harmonic motion, wave characteristics, superposition, standing waves and the Doppler effect, with diffraction and resolution added at HL. The theme most often taught well and examined badly: students can define a node and still not interpret an unfamiliar interference sketch in Paper 1B.

Theme D — Fields

SL and HL, with HL extension

Gravitational, electric and magnetic fields treated as one idea, plus electric circuits and electromagnetic induction. This is where most Diploma Physics students in Dubai first ask for help. Field lines, potential and potential energy get blurred together, and the sign conventions are unforgiving.

Theme E — Nuclear and quantum physics

SL and HL, with HL extension

Radioactive decay, nuclear binding energy, fission and fusion, the photoelectric effect and, at HL, the quantum and nuclear structure extension. Arrives late in DP2 when revision has already begun, so it is routinely the least secure theme in a mock paper.

Paper 1A technique

SL 30 questions · HL 40 questions

Multiple choice across all five themes with no partial credit. Scoring here is a trainable skill distinct from physics knowledge: elimination, order-of-magnitude checks and recognising distractors built from a common algebraic slip. Many students lose more in Paper 1A than in any single theme.

Paper 1B data and experimental skills

SL and HL

Unseen apparatus, unseen data, graphs to draw and gradients to interpret with uncertainties attached. Nothing in the MYP or in IGCSE prepares a student for this. It is the single highest-return thing to drill with a tutor, because the skills transfer directly into the scientific investigation.

Paper 2 extended response

SL 1h30 · HL 2h30

Short answers building into multi-part questions that cross themes. Command terms decide the mark: explain, deduce, outline and determine each demand a different shape of answer. Students who write everything they know for every verb run out of time in the final third of the paper.

The scientific investigation

SL and HL, identical task

One student-designed investigation, around ten hours of class time, a 3,000-word ceiling, marked on four criteria for a total of 24. Twenty per cent of the final grade, decided months before the examinations and almost entirely recoverable with structured feedback on the student's own drafts.

Mathematics for Physics

Alongside AA or AI

Logarithms for decay, small-angle approximations, vector resolution, unit algebra and rearranging before substituting. Physics HL students taking Maths AI rather than AA meet this gap most sharply. A Physics tutor who ignores the maths will keep re-teaching the same topic.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of booking work in The Greens, and they are shaped by the bus timetable rather than by a package menu. All of them are delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.

One weekly session, placed after the bus

The default for a DP1 student who is coping but drifting. One sixty- or ninety-minute session a week, fixed on the same day, placed late enough that the bus delay does not eat it. The tutor works a term ahead of the school's scheme so the lesson lands before the topic is taught rather than after the test.

  • Fixed slot, usually 16:45 or later for Al Sufouh and Al Barsha schools
  • Agenda set from the school's own scheme of work, not a generic plan
  • Paper 1B data questions used as the weekly warm-up
  • Written note after each session naming what was covered and what to practise

Twin sessions through the mock run

Dubai schools run Diploma mocks in the winter and again in the spring. Two sessions a week for six to eight weeks around those windows lets a tutor cover a theme and then mark a timed paper on it. The second session each week is spent on the student's own script, not on new content.

  • One teaching session and one marking session each week
  • Timed Paper 1A sets under examination conditions
  • Command-term audit on every Paper 2 answer the student writes
  • A ranked list of the three themes costing the most marks

Investigation clinics

Short, intensive blocks around the scientific investigation. The tutor reads what the student has produced, points at the criterion the work is missing, and sends them back to it. No text is supplied and no section is authored for them — the entire value here is the student learning to see their own work the way a moderator will.

  • Research question narrowed until a controlled-variable list is possible
  • Uncertainty propagation checked through to the gradient
  • Conclusion tested against a published value
  • Evaluation rewritten by the student from named limitations

Short-day and holiday intensives

Friday is a short school day across Dubai, and the Eid and winter breaks open up real daytime hours. Intensives use those gaps for the work that does not fit a weekday hour: a full Paper 2 under timed conditions, a whole theme rebuilt, or the mathematics underneath Physics repaired from the ground up.

  • Friday afternoon two-hour blocks during term
  • Full-length papers sat and marked in the same day
  • Theme D rebuilt from field lines upward where needed
  • Scheduled around travel, since many Greens families leave for part of each break

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in The Greens

01

What time can an IB Physics session actually start in The Greens?

  • Watch your actual bus drop for two weeks before committing to a slot
  • Regent International School pupils need no bus and can start earliest
  • Al Sufouh and Al Barsha loops usually push the start to 17:00
  • A session ending by 18:15 protects homework time and sleep

For most Greens households the honest answer is 16:30 at the earliest, and 16:45 if the school sits in Al Sufouh or Al Barsha. Dubai secondary timetables generally finish between 14:45 and 15:15, buses load for ten to fifteen minutes, and the run back into Al Thanyah Third takes between fifteen and forty minutes depending on the loop and the day. Add a meal and the first workable hour begins in the middle of the afternoon.

The variation inside that band is larger than parents expect. Regent International School sits inside The Greens itself, so its students are home before many buses have left their yards. Emirates International School Meadows runs a short loop and is usually the earliest bus back. Dubai College and GEMS Wellington International School are further west along Al Sufouh Road, and their loops arrive last. A single booking time cannot serve all of them, which is why a provider that offers fixed class times rather than fixed slots loses Greens students at the same rate every term.

The table below gives indicative windows for the schools this community feeds. Treat them as a starting point for a conversation rather than as published timetables: finish times differ by year group, co-curricular commitments move the bell, and bus routes are redrawn at the start of each academic year. The only number that matters is the one on your own route, and the reliable way to find it is to watch the drop time for two weeks before fixing a slot.

One more piece of arithmetic is worth doing before booking. A ninety-minute session starting at 16:45 ends at 18:15, which leaves a Diploma student their own evening for homework and sleep. A ninety-minute session starting at 18:00 ends at 19:30, by which point a DP2 student who was up at six has very little left. Later is not safer. The window immediately after the bus, before the day closes down, is the one that produces work.

The IB Physics course your child is actually sitting

Physics was rewritten for first teaching in 2023, and the version many tutors still describe no longer exists. The old options — astrophysics, imaging, relativity as an option block — are gone. Paper 3 is gone. In their place sit five themes taught to both levels, with the Higher Level course adding depth rather than separate option material, and a single internal assessment called the scientific investigation.

The assessment weighting is worth memorising because it changes where effort should go. Paper 1 carries 36% of the grade and is split into a multiple-choice section and a data-and-experimental section sat inside the same time allowance. Paper 2 carries 44% and is where the long reasoning lives. The scientific investigation carries the remaining 20% and is finished long before the examination session. A student who treats the investigation as a side task has handed away a fifth of the grade before the first paper is opened.

The practical difference between SL and HL is not a different syllabus. It is 240 taught hours against 150, additional depth inside each theme, and considerably longer papers. Paper 2 runs for an hour and a half at SL and two and a half hours at HL. That extra hour is not generosity; it is more extended-response marks, and stamina in the final forty minutes is a genuine differentiator in HL results.

This matters when you are choosing a tutor. Ask them which theme contains gravitational potential, or whether Paper 1B is sat separately. A tutor working from the pre-2023 course will answer the first question with an option number and the second with a yes. Neither answer is compatible with the course your child is actually taking, and the gap will not show up until a mock paper.

Where Physics marks leak away, theme by theme

  • Theme A: hidden vector geometry rather than unfamiliar content
  • Theme B: temperature confused with internal energy, and unit slips
  • Theme C: definitions secure, unfamiliar interference diagrams not
  • Theme D: potential, potential energy and field strength blurred together
  • Theme E: taught late in DP2, so it is the weakest theme in most mocks
  • Paper 2: command terms mismatched to answer length

Physics marks are rarely lost to not knowing the physics. They are lost to a small set of repeated technical failures, and each one is diagnosable from a single marked script. A tutor who cannot name which of them your child is doing is guessing, and a term of guessing costs more than the lessons did.

In Theme A the recurring loss is vector resolution under pressure. A student who can resolve a force on an incline when asked to resolve a force on an incline will often fail to recognise the same geometry inside a question about a banked curve or a pendulum. The fix is not more kinematics. It is twenty questions in which the geometry is hidden, until the recognition becomes automatic.

Theme D produces the largest single bleed in most Dubai cohorts. Gravitational potential, gravitational potential energy and field strength are three different quantities with three different units, and students who learn them as three similar formulae will mix them in any question that does not label which is wanted. Electric circuits add a second failure: internal resistance is taught once, appears in Paper 2 regularly, and is forgotten by almost everyone who has not been made to derive it.

Across every theme the quietest loss is command terms in Paper 2. State, outline, explain, deduce, determine and discuss ask for different amounts of writing and different kinds of reasoning. A student who writes a paragraph for every state and a sentence for every explain will be marked down twice: once for the missing reasoning and once for the time they no longer have. Marking a student's own script against the command terms, line by line, moves more marks in a fortnight than a month of new content.

04

The scientific investigation: a fifth of the grade, settled before the exams

The scientific investigation is the part of IB Physics most open to improvement and most often left until it is too late. It is one investigation of the student's own design, around ten hours of class time, with a 3,000-word ceiling and four marking criteria worth six marks each. Twenty-four marks in total, scaled to a fifth of the final grade, and unlike the examinations it can be revised, reconsidered and rebuilt before submission.

Dubai cohorts lose marks here in a predictable pattern, and most of it is visible in the research question. A question like 'how does temperature affect resistance' cannot be answered within ten hours because it does not specify a material, a range or a method of measurement. Criterion A asks for a design another student could repeat, and a broad question makes that impossible. Narrowing the question is usually the single highest-value hour a tutor spends on an investigation.

Criterion B is where physics students with good laboratory habits still lose marks. Uncertainties get recorded neatly in the raw data table and then vanish. They do not appear as error bars, they are not propagated into the gradient, and the final value arrives without a range attached. A moderator reading that sees a student who has collected data rather than analysed it. Criterion D compounds the problem: an evaluation that says 'human error' names nothing and therefore earns little.

The boundary a tutor works inside here is firm and worth stating plainly. The investigation must be the student's own work. A tutor may teach uncertainty propagation, may explain what each criterion rewards, may read a draft and say which criterion is unmet, and may ask the questions that make a student see their own gap. A tutor may not supply text, may not author a section, and may not hand over a method. IB academic-honesty rules make that distinction an expulsion risk for the student, not a stylistic preference.

Friday short days, Ramadan and the Dubai revision calendar

  • Friday short days are the only real daytime block during term
  • Agree a post-Iftar Ramadan slot in advance rather than cancelling weekly
  • Investigation deadlines land in DP2 autumn and winter, not in exam term
  • Take every session and results date from the IB or your school coordinator

The UAE working and school week runs Monday to Friday with a short Friday, and that single structural fact is underused by every family who schedules tutoring as though it were a five-full-day week. Friday afternoon is the only genuine daytime block during term. A two-hour Friday session can hold a full timed Paper 2 and its marking, which no weekday hour between the bus and bedtime can.

Ramadan reorganises the day again. School hours shorten, energy drops through the afternoon, and the productive hours move either very early or to after Iftar. Families in The Greens who try to hold a 16:45 slot through Ramadan generally lose half of it. Moving the session to a post-Iftar evening window for those weeks, and agreeing that in advance rather than cancelling week by week, keeps the thread intact. A tutor who cannot shift timezone-wise for a month is the wrong tutor for a UAE family.

Counting backwards from the examination session is the part almost nobody does. Dubai schools sitting the May session run internal deadlines for the investigation and for the extended essay through the autumn and winter of DP2, with mocks in between. By the time the May papers arrive, the internal 20% has been locked for months. The work that moves a Physics grade therefore has to happen a long way before the revision period that parents instinctively plan for.

A note on dates. IB session and results dates are published by the IB itself and by your school's IB coordinator, and they change. This page deliberately publishes none of them. Cambridge and Pearson publish their own International GCSE timetables, which matter if a younger sibling is in Year 11, and those should be read from the board's live timetable page rather than from any tutoring site, including this one.

06

Practical skills when the lesson is on a screen

The reasonable objection to online Physics teaching is practical work, and it deserves a straight answer rather than reassurance. Your child's practical scheme of work belongs to their school. The laboratory is at school, the apparatus is at school, and the ten hours of investigation time are timetabled at school. No tutor, online or otherwise, replaces that, and any provider implying they can is describing something that is not theirs to offer.

What a tutor can do is the part schools have least time for: the analysis. Paper 1B does not test whether a student can clamp a boss head. It tests whether they can read unfamiliar apparatus from a diagram, identify what was controlled, decide which quantity to plot against which to get a straight line, draw error bars that mean something, and extract a gradient with an uncertainty attached. Every one of those is a screen activity. Shared datasets, a spreadsheet both people can see, and a graph built live are better teaching tools for this than a bench would be.

Screen sharing also makes a specific kind of feedback possible that is awkward in person. A tutor can open the student's own graph, zoom into the line of best fit, and show exactly where the chosen scale has thrown away two significant figures. They can replay a recorded explanation of uncertainty propagation three times before the next session. Both of those are routine online and clumsy across a kitchen table.

The honest limit is this: a student who has not been attending their school practicals will have a gap that tutoring narrows rather than closes. The first conversation with a tutor should establish how much laboratory time has actually happened, because the plan for a student with a full practical folder and a student with three loose sheets is not the same plan.

07

What a tutor may and may not touch on assessed work

  • Permitted: teaching, criterion explanation, draft feedback, questioning, modelling on other data
  • Not permitted: supplying text, authoring sections, handing over methods or datasets
  • The consequence of malpractice falls on the student, not the website
  • Ask any prospective tutor the night-before-deadline question

This section exists because the search results your child's friends are using include sites selling finished internal assessments. Those sites are not an edgy shortcut. Under IB academic-honesty rules, submitting work that is not your own is malpractice, and the consequence falls on the student rather than on the website. A Diploma can be withheld. It is worth saying out loud to a sixteen-year-old under deadline pressure, because they will meet the offer.

The permitted boundary is wide and genuinely useful. A tutor may teach the underlying physics, explain what each marking criterion rewards, model the analysis on a different dataset, read a student's draft and name the criterion that is unmet, question a conclusion until the student sees the hole in it, and teach the mathematics of uncertainty until it is automatic. All of that improves marks and all of it is legitimate, because the thinking stays with the student.

The forbidden side is narrow and absolute. A tutor does not supply sentences for submission, does not author a method, does not hand over a dataset, and does not edit a draft into something the student could not have produced. The same line applies to the extended essay and to theory of knowledge. If a provider's offer is that something arrives finished, the offer is malpractice regardless of how it is described.

There is a practical test a parent can apply. Ask the tutor what they would do if your child sent a half-written investigation at ten at night with a deadline the next morning. The right answer is a list of questions sent back and an honest statement that the remaining work is the student's to do. Any answer that involves the tutor producing content is the wrong answer, and hearing it early saves a great deal of trouble later.

08

KHDA reports, and what they tell you about a physics department

Dubai's private schools are overseen by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which inspects them annually and publishes the outcome on a six-band scale running from Outstanding down to Very Weak. Dubai's private sector held 227 schools serving 387,441 students in 2024-25 across seventeen curricula, with International Baccalaureate programmes accounting for seven per cent of enrolment against thirty-seven per cent on the UK curriculum. That mix is why a Greens apartment block contains students on three different science courses.

An inspection report is more useful to a parent than its headline band. The reports break attainment and progress down by subject and by phase, which means a school rated Very Good overall can carry a science department whose secondary progress is only Good. If you are trying to work out whether your child's difficulty with Theme D is personal or structural, that breakdown answers the question better than a parents' group chat does.

KHDA also sets requirements that shape the timetable your tutoring has to fit inside. Arabic, Islamic Education and social and moral studies are mandatory in Dubai private schools whatever international curriculum the school is licensed to teach, with instructional time calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit. For an IB student those lessons occupy periods that are not available for Physics, which is part of why the Diploma feels compressed in Dubai schools specifically.

A word on what a regulator relationship is and is not. KHDA inspects and licenses schools, and it issues educational services permits to training institutes that operate premises in Dubai. IB Gram holds no such permit, claims no regulatory approval, and operates no centre in the UAE. Any tutoring provider describing itself as approved by KHDA, by ADEK, by the Ministry of Education or by the IB should be asked to show the permit number, because the claim is specific and checkable.

Where we tutor

The afternoon window across the golf-club communities

The Greens shares bus contracts, roads and school rolls with the communities around Emirates Golf Club. Each one has a slightly different clock, and that clock is what decides whether a booked slot survives the term.

The Views

Directly across the fairway from The Greens, on the same Al Thanyah Third turn-off and frequently on the same bus loops. Views families hold almost the identical afternoon window, which is why the 16:30 and 17:30 Physics slots are the first to fill across both communities.

Dubai Marina

Marina buses queue at Interchange 5 before they reach Al Thanyah, so a Marina sibling often lands home fifteen to twenty minutes later than a Greens one. Households split across both areas usually settle on a 17:00 start for everybody.

Jumeirah Lake Towers

A short run down Sheikh Zayed Road, though the Jumeirah Islands turn adds minutes from 15:45. JLT students at Dubai British School Emirates Hills and Emirates International School Meadows often share the same bus contract as Greens pupils.

Jumeirah Beach Residence

Traffic along The Walk from 16:00 makes any fixed arrival time unreliable here, which is one practical reason JBR Diploma students take an online slot immediately after the bus drop rather than waiting for a later evening window.

Emirates Hills

Dubai International Academy sits in Emirates Hills, making this the shortest school journey in the cluster for Greens pupils. DIA Diploma students commonly want 17:00 because co-curricular sessions run past the final bell twice a week.

The Springs

Dubai British School Emirates Hills has a Springs address and takes a substantial Greens intake. Its British secondary timetable finishes a little later than the IB schools nearby, pushing the realistic Physics start towards 16:45.

The Meadows

Emirates International School Meadows runs the IB continuum from PYP through to the Diploma, and its Greens loop is usually the earliest back into Al Thanyah. Meadows students have the widest choice of afternoon slots in the cluster.

Barsha Heights

Across the tram line from The Greens and close enough that some families walk. Physics students here attend the Al Barsha and Al Sufouh schools, and they use the same post-bus window as their Greens neighbours.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in The Greens

The Greens, The Views and the golf-club side

The schools a Greens household realistically chooses between, all within a short bus run. Between them they cover the full IB continuum and the British route to IGCSE, which is why Physics students in one apartment block can be sitting three different courses.

  • Regent International School
  • Emirates International School – Meadows
  • Dubai British School Emirates Hills
  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills
  • Emirates International School Jumeirah

Al Sufouh and Al Barsha, one interchange away

The second ring of schools Greens families use, reached along Al Sufouh Road or Umm Suqeim Street. Journey times here are longer and less predictable, so Physics sessions for students at these schools usually sit at 17:00 or later.

  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Dubai College
  • American School of Dubai
  • Dubai American Academy
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Repton School Al Barsha
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the timetable, not just the subject

The first message that helps is the one that includes the school, the year group, the bus drop time and whether the student is SL or HL. Those four facts decide which tutors can be offered at all, because a slot nobody can attend is not a match however good the teaching is.

  2. 02

A short diagnostic on Paper 1B

Before any teaching, the student works through a small set of unseen data questions while the tutor watches. This is the fastest way to see whether the problem is content, mathematics, uncertainty handling or examination technique, and it takes about half an hour rather than three lessons of discovery.

  3. 03

A trial lesson in the slot you actually want

The trial runs at the real time on the real day, not at a convenient demonstration hour. If 16:45 on a Tuesday is the slot, that is when the trial happens, because a trial at eleven on a Saturday tells you nothing about whether a tired Diploma student will engage after a bus ride.

  4. 04

A written plan against the five themes

After the trial you receive a plan naming which themes will be covered in which order, how the school's own scheme has been accounted for, and where the scientific investigation sits in the calendar. A plan you can read is a plan you can hold a tutor to.

  5. 05

Fortnightly review, and a swap if the fit is wrong

Every two weeks there is a short note on what moved and what did not. Personality mismatches happen and are nobody's failure. Asking for a different tutor costs nothing and should happen at week three rather than at week twelve, when a term has already gone.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The tutor is chosen for the syllabus, not the postcode

Searching for a Physics specialist within driving distance of Al Thanyah Third produces a short list. Searching the whole pool for someone who has taken cohorts through the 2023 guide produces a better one. Online delivery is what makes the second search possible at all.

Sessions are built around the bus, not the calendar

Slots are placed after the actual drop time for your actual route, with Friday short days and Ramadan handled in advance. Attendance is the variable that most affects results, and attendance is a scheduling problem before it is a motivation problem.

One specialist, continuously

The same tutor through both Diploma years, holding the thread from Theme A in DP1 to the Theme E material that arrives late in DP2. Rotating tutors re-diagnose the same problems every few months and lose the history that makes targeted teaching possible.

Assessed work is supported, never supplied

Teaching, criterion explanation and feedback on the student's own drafts, with a clear line that is never crossed. This is a deliberate difference from the sites in these search results that sell completed internal assessments, and it protects the student's diploma.

Market rates stated as market rates

Published hourly bands in Dubai come from competitors and from independent cost surveys, and this page attributes them as such rather than presenting them as a price list. What IB Gram charges is discussed in the consultation, against the actual number of sessions a student needs.

No claimed approvals, no invented numbers

IB Gram holds no KHDA permit, operates no UAE centre, and publishes no satisfaction percentage or tutor headcount it cannot evidence. Everything factual on this page is either attributable to a named source or framed as indicative.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in The Greens: your questions answered

What time can an IB Physics lesson start if my child takes a school bus home to The Greens?+

For most routes, 16:30 is the earliest workable start and 16:45 is safer. Dubai secondary timetables finish between roughly 14:45 and 15:15, buses load for ten to fifteen minutes, and the run into Al Thanyah Third takes fifteen to forty minutes. Students at Regent International School, which sits inside The Greens, can start earlier because they need no bus. Students at Dubai College or GEMS Wellington International School in Al Sufouh usually need 17:00. The reliable method is to watch your own drop time for two weeks and then fix a slot ten minutes after the latest arrival you saw.

Has IB Physics Paper 3 really been removed from the course?+

Yes. The Physics guide for first teaching in 2023 restructured the course into five themes taught at both levels and removed the separate option paper entirely. Assessment is now Paper 1, split into a multiple-choice section and a data-and-experimental section, carrying 36% of the grade; Paper 2 carrying 44%; and the scientific investigation carrying 20%. A tutor who talks about option topics or about preparing for Paper 3 is working from the previous course. Ask any prospective Physics tutor this question directly, because the answer tells you within a sentence whether they have taught the current syllabus.

My son is at Dubai International Academy and finds Theme D fields impossible. Is that usual?+

It is the most common sticking point in Diploma Physics, and it is usually a naming problem rather than a conceptual one. Field strength, potential and potential energy are three distinct quantities with three sets of units, and students who learn them as three similar equations cannot tell which a question wants. Electric circuits add internal resistance, which is taught once and then assumed. The fix is narrow and quick: separate the three quantities explicitly, derive rather than memorise, and work through unlabelled questions until recognition is automatic. Most students need three or four focused sessions, not a term.

How many hours of IB Physics tutoring does a Greens student typically need before mocks?+

It depends entirely on the diagnosis, which is why an honest answer starts with a diagnostic rather than a package. A DP1 student drifting in one theme often needs six to eight sessions. A DP2 student whose mock revealed losses across Themes C, D and E, plus weak Paper 1A technique, is looking at two sessions a week through a six to eight week block. A student whose real problem is the mathematics underneath Physics may need a longer run. Any provider quoting a fixed hour count before seeing a marked script is guessing at your expense.

Can a tutor help with the Physics scientific investigation without crossing an academic-honesty line?+

Yes, and the permitted work is substantial. A tutor can teach uncertainty propagation, explain what each of the four criteria rewards, model an analysis on an unrelated dataset, read a draft and name which criterion is unmet, and question a conclusion until the student sees the gap themselves. What a tutor must never do is supply sentences for submission, author a section, or hand over a method or dataset. The thinking and the words stay with the student. That line is what keeps the diploma safe, and it is worth asking any tutor to state it before you book.

Does my child need laboratory equipment at home for online IB Physics lessons?+

No. The practical scheme of work and the ten hours of investigation time belong to your child's school, where the apparatus is. Tutoring covers the part schools have least time for, which is analysis: reading unfamiliar apparatus from a diagram, deciding what to plot to get a straight line, drawing meaningful error bars, and extracting a gradient with an uncertainty attached. All of that is better done on a shared screen with a live spreadsheet than at a bench. The first session should establish how much laboratory time has actually happened, because that changes the plan.

How are uncertainties and error bars examined in IB Physics?+

They appear in two places and they carry real weight in both. Paper 1B presents unseen data and asks a student to process it, which routinely means propagating an uncertainty into a gradient and stating a final value with a range. Criterion B of the scientific investigation marks the same skill on the student's own data, and this is where most marks are lost: uncertainties get tabulated once and then disappear, with no error bars on the graph and no range on the result. Neither Cambridge nor Pearson IGCSE examines this, so it is genuinely new in DP1.

Is Physics HL worth taking if my child wants to study engineering at a UAE university?+

Physics HL is the conventional route and most engineering faculties treat it as the expected preparation, usually alongside Mathematics Analysis and Approaches. What matters more than the general answer is the specific entry page of the specific programme, because requirements vary between institutions and between engineering disciplines, and they are revised. Read the university's own admissions page and, if the student needs certificate equivalency, the Ministry of Education's own guidance. No tutoring provider should tell you what a university requires, and tutoring is not a requirement for any admissions process.

Do The Greens and The Views share the same tutoring slots?+

In practice yes, and that is worth knowing before you book. The two communities sit either side of Emirates Golf Club on the same Al Thanyah Third approach, frequently on the same school bus loops, and they feed the same set of schools. Demand for the 16:30 and 17:30 Physics windows therefore peaks across both at once, and those are the first slots to disappear each September. Families who fix a slot in the first fortnight of term get the window they want; families who wait until after the first assessment generally take what is left.

What happens to our Physics sessions during Ramadan in The Greens?+

School hours shorten, afternoon energy drops, and a 16:45 slot that worked in January stops working. The approach that holds is to agree the Ramadan arrangement before the month begins rather than cancelling week by week: either an early slot before school pressure builds or a post-Iftar evening session. Both are normal for UAE families and both are workable online, since no travel is involved. A tutor who cannot move within the day for a month is the wrong tutor for a household in Dubai, and this is a fair question to ask at the trial.

Should my child take Physics HL alongside Mathematics Applications and Interpretation rather than Analysis and Approaches?+

It is possible and some students do it successfully, but it creates a workload a tutor has to plan around. Physics HL leans on algebraic manipulation, logarithms for decay, small-angle approximations and vector resolution, and Analysis and Approaches builds those explicitly while Applications and Interpretation takes a different route. A student pairing Physics HL with Applications usually needs part of their Physics time spent on the mathematics itself. That is manageable when it is planned for and expensive when it is discovered in DP2. Discuss the combination with the school's IB coordinator before the choice is locked.

What do Physics tutors charge per hour around The Greens and Dubai Marina?+

Published market rates in Dubai, taken from providers' own pages and from independent cost surveys, run roughly AED 45 to AED 150 an hour for budget or university-student online tutoring, AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified subject tutor online, AED 180 to AED 500 for an in-home visit including travel, and AED 200 to AED 450 or more for an IB or A Level specialist. Those are market figures attributed to their sources, not an IB Gram price list. Our own rates are discussed in the consultation against the number of sessions actually needed.

Does IB Gram send a Physics tutor to our apartment in The Greens?+

No. All UAE tutoring is delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. Home visits are a service IB Gram offers only in India, and there are no home visits in Dubai. That is a deliberate choice rather than a limitation: it means the Physics specialist matched to your child is chosen from the whole pool rather than from whoever can reach Al Thanyah Third before six. For a subject with as few genuine Diploma specialists as Physics, the trade of travel for expertise is the one that moves grades.

My daughter is resitting Physics in a later session. Can a tutor pick that up mid-course?+

Yes, and a resit is one of the clearer tutoring briefs because the evidence already exists. The starting point is the component breakdown from the previous session: a student who lost marks mainly in Paper 1A needs technique work, one who lost them in Paper 2 needs command-term and extended-response work, and one whose internal mark was weak has a different problem again. The internal assessment mark usually carries forward, so confirm with your school's IB coordinator what has to be resubmitted before planning any sessions around it.

What does a KHDA inspection report actually tell me about a school's science teaching?+

More than the headline band does. KHDA inspects Dubai private schools annually and publishes outcomes on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak, but the reports break attainment and progress down by subject and by phase. A school rated Very Good overall can hold a secondary science department whose progress is only Good, and that detail is published. If you are trying to judge whether a difficulty with Theme D is your child's or the department's, the subject-level breakdown in the report answers it better than any parent group chat.

Fix the slot first, then the physics

The useful next step for a Greens family is small. Note the actual bus drop time for your route, note whether your child is SL or HL, and find the most recent marked Physics script in the bag. With those three things a tutor can tell you within one conversation whether the problem is content, mathematics, uncertainty handling or examination technique, and which of the five themes is costing the most. The trial lesson then runs at the real time on the real day, so you can see whether a tired Diploma student engages after a bus ride. Everything is online, one-to-one, in Gulf Standard Time, and nobody drives anywhere.
