IB Chemistry Tutor in The Greens

Quotes for an IB chemistry tutor in The Greens reach AED 650 an hour at the top of the Dubai market, and the obvious question is what the premium contains. This page answers it component by component: the organic mechanisms a generalist cannot teach, the Paper 2 extended responses where command terms decide marks, and the four criteria of the scientific investigation. Then it says where the premium buys nothing at all.

IB & IGCSE in The Greens

What you are buying at the top of the Chemistry market

Dubai's tutoring market has a visible ceiling and Chemistry sits close to it. Premium named tutors are advertised in the emirate at AED 500 to 650 an hour. Subject specialists for the Diploma, IGCSE and A Level are quoted from about AED 200 to 450 and upwards. Qualified subject tutors working online sit between roughly AED 150 and 300, and budget or university-student tutors from AED 45 to 150. Those are published market figures from Dubai rate cards and Bestimate's 2026 cost table for the emirate, not IB Gram prices.

A family in The Greens comparing the top and the middle of that range deserves a concrete answer rather than a reassurance. Three parts of Diploma Chemistry genuinely reward someone who has taught the course repeatedly. Organic mechanisms at Higher Level, where a curly arrow in the wrong place loses the mark even when the product is right. Paper 2 extended responses, where the command term dictates what counts as an answer and an explanation that stops one step early scores nothing. And the scientific investigation, which is assessed out of twenty-four marks across four criteria, only one of which is really about chemistry.

Everything else in the course is taught well at the middle of the market. The mole, reacting masses, bonding, energetics and equilibrium are standard content with abundant practice material, and a qualified subject tutor at AED 150 to 300 an hour covers them properly. A student who is behind on Structure 1 does not need a premium hour; they need twenty of the ordinary kind, used in order.

The 2023 Chemistry guide changed where the money should go, and many quotes have not caught up. The course is now organised around two themes, Structure and Reactivity, each with three topics, and the assessment from 2025 runs on Paper 1 at thirty-six per cent, split into a multiple-choice section and a data-based section, Paper 2 at forty-four per cent, and the scientific investigation at twenty per cent. The old habit of buying hours to drill recall fits an assessment model that no longer exists.

The practical scheme of work is the other thing families do not budget for. Standard Level carries forty hours and Higher Level sixty, and ten of those hours go to the collaborative sciences project, an interdisciplinary piece of work every Diploma science student completes. It is not separately graded, so it consumes time without producing a mark, which makes the weeks around it the worst possible moment to start tutoring from scratch.

What follows prices each of those components, says plainly which band of the market covers it, and ends with the number of hours the whole thing realistically takes. Every AED figure is the market's. IB Gram delivers all UAE lessons one-to-one over live video and makes no home visits in Dubai, because home visits are an India-only part of the service.

  • Premium Dubai rates reach AED 650 an hour; specialists AED 200-450+
  • Ten of the practical hours go to a project that carries no mark
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Four things a Greens parent might be buying when they ask for Chemistry help, priced and timed differently. Naming which one you need before asking for a rate is the difference between a sensible quote and an expensive guess.

HLAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Chemistry at Higher Level

Two years with a sixty-hour practical scheme of work, a two-hour Paper 1 and a two-and-a-half-hour Paper 2. Higher Level content is woven through the same six topics as Standard Level rather than bolted on, which means a student cannot simply skip the harder material: the additional depth appears inside equilibrium, acids and bases, electrochemistry and organic mechanisms.

Higher Level Chemistry is where tutoring spend concentrates in the Emirates Living cluster, because the schools near The Greens run small Higher Level groups and the organic mechanism work in the second year has no shortcut. Two sessions a week through Year 13 is the pattern that recurs, and it is the single largest line in a Diploma science budget.

SLAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Chemistry at Standard Level

The same two themes and six topics at reduced depth, with a forty-hour practical scheme, a ninety-minute Paper 1 and a ninety-minute Paper 2. The scientific investigation carries the same twenty per cent and the same twenty-four marks as at Higher Level, which makes it proportionally the better value place to spend tutoring hours.

Standard Level Chemistry is frequently over-bought in this community. Families quote for a specialist because the subject sounds hard, then spend the hours on the mole and bonding, which the middle of the Dubai market teaches perfectly well at AED 150 to 300. The specialist premium belongs on the investigation and on Paper 2 technique.

SIWritten in Year 12 or early Year 13

The scientific investigation

A single independent investigation, reported in up to three thousand words and assessed out of twenty-four marks across four equally weighted criteria: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Three of those four criteria reward scientific reasoning and writing rather than chemical content, which is why strong chemists frequently underperform on it.

This is the best-value purchase in Diploma Chemistry and the one most often left until the spring. A block of around six sessions in Year 12 covers the research question, uncertainty handling and feedback on the student's own drafts. Bought in the spring of Year 13 it competes with revision at the most expensive point in the calendar.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme sciences into Diploma Chemistry

Criterion-assessed integrated science, which measures something different from a timed chemistry paper. Students arriving in Year 12 with strong Middle Years Programme science grades can still be unprepared for the arithmetic density of Structure 1, because criterion-based marking rewards process and the Diploma papers reward accuracy under time.

Several campuses within reach of The Greens run the full IB continuum, so the transition happens without a change of school and without a change of report format. That hides the step. The cheapest intervention is a short bridging block on moles and reacting masses in the summer before Year 12, rather than remedial work in the December after it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Chemistry is one subject on the timetable and a dozen separately priceable skills in a mark scheme. These are the areas Greens families end up paying for, with the band of the Dubai market that covers each one adequately.

The mole and reacting masses

SL and HL, Structure 1

Moles, concentrations, limiting reagents, percentage yield and the ideal gas law. It is arithmetic-dense rather than conceptually hard, which means it responds to practice rather than to explanation, and the middle of the market teaches it entirely adequately.

Atomic structure and electron configuration

SL and HL, Structure 1

Isotopes, mass spectra, ionisation energies and orbital filling. Marks go missing on the explanation questions, where a student describes a trend correctly and omits the shielding or nuclear charge reason the mark scheme requires.

Bonding, structure and intermolecular forces

SL and HL, Structure 2

Ionic, covalent and metallic models, shapes of molecules and the hierarchy of intermolecular forces. The recurring loss is being asked to explain a physical property from a structure and answering with the structure alone, which earns half the marks at best.

Periodicity and classification

SL and HL, Structure 3

Periodic trends, functional groups, and the spectroscopic identification of compounds. The spectroscopy questions reward reading an unfamiliar spectrum rather than recalling a rule, and they are one of the components a generalist tutor tends to avoid.

Energetics: enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs energy

SL and HL, Reactivity 1

Enthalpy changes, Hess cycles, bond enthalpies and, at Higher Level, entropy and spontaneity. Signs and states are where the marks are lost, almost never the concept, and the fix is a drawing habit rather than more theory.

Equilibrium

SL and HL, Reactivity 2

Le Chatelier reasoning at both levels and equilibrium constant calculations at Higher Level. The Higher Level algebra defeats more students than the chemistry does, which makes it one of the places a specialist hour genuinely earns its premium.

Acids, bases and buffers

SL and HL, Reactivity 2

pH, strong and weak behaviour, titration curves and, at Higher Level, buffer calculations and indicator choice. Titration curve interpretation is high-yield and under-practised, since school practical time rarely allows enough repetitions.

Redox and electrochemistry

SL and HL, Reactivity 2 and 3

Oxidation states, half-equations, electrolysis and, at Higher Level, cell potentials and the Nernst-style reasoning the course expects. Half-equations in acidic and alkaline conditions are a reliable source of lost marks and a reliable thing to fix.

Kinetics and rate laws

SL and HL, Reactivity 2

Collision theory and rate graphs at both levels, with rate laws, orders of reaction and activation energy determination at Higher Level. Deducing an order from data is a data-handling skill, so it improves alongside the Paper 1B work rather than separately.

Organic chemistry and reaction mechanisms

SL and HL, Reactivity 3

Functional group reactions at both levels; nucleophilic substitution, electrophilic addition and the arrow-pushing conventions at Higher Level. This is the component where the gap between a specialist and a generalist is visible in a single session, because the conventions are either known precisely or not at all.

Uncertainties, data and graphs

SL and HL, assessed in Paper 1B

Significant figures, absolute and percentage uncertainty, error bars and gradient uncertainty. It is taught thinly in most schools, appears in both Paper 1B and criterion B of the investigation, and is among the cheapest marks available in the whole course.

Paper 2 extended response technique

SL and HL, 44% of the grade

Reading the command term, answering at the depth it requires, and stopping at the right point. Students lose more marks to writing the wrong kind of answer than to not knowing chemistry, and this is trainable in a handful of sessions with marked scripts.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Four ways to buy Chemistry support, each matched to a component rather than to a vague level of worry. All are delivered one-to-one over live video, with screen sharing for marked scripts and graph work.

A weekly hour through Year 12

Aimed at Structure 1 arithmetic and the uncertainty work schools teach thinly, this is the cheapest useful arrangement and it belongs at the middle of the market rather than the premium end. Its value depends on the student arriving with specific questions rather than a general sense of being behind.

  • Moles, concentrations and limiting reagents until they are automatic
  • Uncertainty and graph work, which Paper 1B assumes
  • A fixed weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time

Two hours a week at Higher Level in Year 13

The realistic plan for Higher Level in the second year, with one hour on organic mechanisms, equilibrium and electrochemistry and one on timed Paper 2 practice. It is the most expensive standing arrangement in Diploma Chemistry and the one most frequently started a term later than it should be.

  • Mechanisms taught by convention, not by analogy
  • Paper 2 answers written under time and marked against command terms
  • Higher Level equilibrium algebra treated as its own skill

A scientific investigation block

Around six sessions covering the research question, the variables, uncertainty handling, and feedback on drafts the student has written. It ends when the report is submitted. Run in Year 12 it banks a fifth of the grade at a predictable one-off cost.

  • A research question narrow enough to be measurable
  • Criteria explained letter by letter before any drafting
  • Feedback on the student's own work, never a supplied draft

A Paper 2 technique block

Four to eight sessions spent entirely on extended responses: reading the command term, answering at the required depth, and recognising when an explanation has stopped a step early. It is the highest-yield short block in the subject because Paper 2 carries forty-four per cent of the grade.

  • Real past questions, marked against the published criteria
  • Command terms treated as instructions rather than vocabulary
  • Scripts returned annotated so the pattern is visible

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in The Greens

01

What the premium end of the market actually contains

Start at the top and work down, because that is the order a worried parent in The Greens receives quotes in. The table below sets out each published band in the Dubai market, who charges it, what the hour plausibly contains, and the specific circumstance in which the premium is defensible. The point of reading it downwards is to notice how quickly the honest justification runs out.

At AED 500 to 650 an hour, what is being sold is usually scarcity and reputation. That is not fraudulent, and a tutor with a long waiting list may well be excellent, but the hour contains the same sixty minutes as one at AED 300. The test is whether the tutor can name the component they are being hired for before the first session. If the answer is general revision, the premium is buying a name.

At AED 200 to 450, the specialist band, the content of the hour changes in ways you can verify. A specialist will talk about curly-arrow conventions rather than about organic chemistry in general, will name command terms rather than describing exam technique, and will refer to the four investigation criteria by letter. Those three habits are what the premium over the middle of the market actually buys, and they map directly onto the components where marks concentrate.

Below that, at AED 150 to 300, is where most of Diploma Chemistry should be bought. The mole, bonding, energetics and Le Chatelier reasoning are standard content with abundant practice material and clear right answers. Paying specialist rates to drill them is the single most common overspend in this subject among families in the Emirates Living cluster. Every figure quoted here is a published Dubai market rate rather than ours.

The 2023 Chemistry guide, and what it changed about the bill

The current Chemistry course is organised around two themes rather than a list of options. Structure covers models of the particulate nature of matter, models of bonding and structure, and classification of matter. Reactivity covers what drives chemical reactions, how much and how fast and how far, and the mechanisms of chemical change. Higher Level material is integrated into those six topics rather than sitting in a separate section.

That integration matters commercially. Under the previous structure a parent could buy help with a named option and leave the rest alone. Now the additional Higher Level depth appears inside equilibrium, acids and bases, electrochemistry and organic mechanisms, so a tutor working with a Higher Level student has to know where each topic deepens. A tutor who last taught the earlier guide will cover the right subject and the wrong depth.

The table below maps the six topics and, for each, names the place students most often need help. Read the right-hand column rather than the middle one if you are deciding where money goes. Five of the six entries are about applying chemistry under specific conditions rather than about recall, which is why hours spent on memorisation produce so little movement in a mark.

One practical note on sources. The IB's own site is not reliably readable by automated tools, so nothing on this page states an IB examination or results date, and nothing here reproduces syllabus text, past papers or mark schemes. Those belong to the board. Take session dates and the current guide from your school's IB coordinator or from ibo.org directly, and treat any tutoring page quoting a Diploma date without a source with caution.

Paper 1A, Paper 1B and Paper 2: where the money goes

The assessment model from 2025 puts forty-four per cent of the Chemistry grade in Paper 2 and thirty-six per cent in Paper 1, which itself splits into a multiple-choice section and a data-based section. The scientific investigation carries the remaining twenty per cent. Those three numbers should drive a tutoring budget, and in most households they do not, because the hours get allocated by topic rather than by component.

Paper 1A, the multiple-choice section, rewards speed and arithmetic reliability. It is the cheapest component to improve because the fix is volume: enough timed questions that the common distractors become recognisable. A budget or mid-market tutor supplies that perfectly well, and a premium hour spent on it is money spent on supervision.

Paper 1B, the data-based section, is the opposite. It asks for significant figures, absolute and percentage uncertainty, error bars and gradient interpretation, and most schools teach those thinly because practical time is short. It is also the skill set criterion B of the investigation assesses, so hours spent here count twice. For a family wanting a single high-yield purchase, this is usually it.

Paper 2 is where the premium belongs. Extended responses are marked against command terms, and a student who writes a good explanation of the wrong kind scores nothing for it. Training that requires marked scripts and someone who knows what the criteria accept, which is precisely the specialist band of AED 200 to 450 an hour. Four to eight sessions on Paper 2 technique is the best-value premium purchase in the subject.

Organic chemistry, the topic families pay for twice

  • Standard Level rewards functional-group reactions; Higher Level rewards mechanisms
  • An arrow in the wrong place loses the mark regardless of the product
  • A memorised version has to be unlearned before conventions can be taught
  • Mechanisms and the investigation collide in the same term unless one is moved

Organic chemistry arrives late in the course and is examined as though it arrived early. At Standard Level the demand is largely functional-group reactions and naming. At Higher Level it becomes mechanisms: nucleophilic substitution, electrophilic addition, and the arrow-pushing conventions that show where electron pairs move. Those conventions are not a style preference. A curly arrow starting in the wrong place loses the mark even when the product written underneath is correct.

That is why families pay twice. The first purchase is a generalist who teaches the reactions as transformations to memorise, which produces a student who can predict products and cannot draw mechanisms. The second purchase, usually in the spring, is a specialist who has to undo the memorised version before teaching the conventional one. Buying the second one first costs less in total than buying both.

The diagnostic is quick and a parent can run it. Ask the student to draw the mechanism for the reaction of a halogenoalkane with a hydroxide ion and say which species is the nucleophile, where the arrow starts and what happens to the leaving group. A student who narrates the product confidently and cannot place the arrows has been taught the memorised version, and that is a specialist job rather than a practice job.

There is a scheduling point too. Organic mechanisms usually land in the second year, in the same months as the investigation deadline and the start of serious revision. A Greens family who front-loads the investigation into Year 12 arrives at that term with capacity. One who leaves both to the spring is buying specialist hours at the busiest point in the Dubai tutoring calendar, for two jobs at once.

05

The investigation, the collaborative project and the honesty line

The scientific investigation is assessed out of twenty-four marks across four criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The report runs to no more than three thousand words. Note what that distribution means. Only one of the four criteria is primarily about chemistry; the other three assess how a scientist designs, interprets and criticises work. Strong chemists lose marks on evaluation more than on anything else, because a limitations section written as an apology scores far below one written as analysis.

The collaborative sciences project sits alongside it. It is an interdisciplinary piece of work taking around ten hours of the practical scheme, which is forty hours at Standard Level and sixty at Higher Level. It carries no separate grade. Families should know it exists because it consumes time in a term where time is already short, not because it needs tutoring.

The boundary on investigation support is explicit. A tutor may challenge a research question until the student narrows it to something measurable, teach uncertainty propagation using other data, explain each criterion by letter, read a draft the student wrote and say where it falls short, and press on limitations the student has not noticed. No tutor at IB Gram will write the investigation, produce a draft for submission, or edit a report until the words stop being the student's.

That line protects the candidate. Submitting work a student did not produce is malpractice under the board's rules and the consequence falls on the candidate, not on the provider. Operations in this market do advertise finished assessed work at fixed prices; what they sell is risk, transferred to a sixteen-year-old. Any provider offering to supply a completed investigation should end the conversation.

06

Higher Level or Standard Level: what the step up costs in hours

The step from Standard to Higher Level Chemistry is not a proportional increase. Papers lengthen, with Paper 1 going from ninety minutes to two hours and Paper 2 from ninety minutes to two and a half. The practical scheme rises from forty hours to sixty. And the additional depth sits inside the same six topics, which means it is met continuously rather than as a block that can be scheduled.

In tutoring terms the difference is roughly double, and it concentrates in the second year. Students on Standard Level who are keeping pace typically need one weekly hour plus an investigation block. Higher Level students usually need one weekly hour in the first year, the same investigation block, and two hours a week from September of the second year once equilibrium algebra, electrochemistry and organic mechanisms are all live at once.

There is a decision here that is worth making on evidence rather than ambition. A student aiming at medicine or chemical engineering may need Higher Level for admission, and that settles it. A student taking Higher Level because it sounded better will spend two years and a substantial tutoring budget on depth they do not need, in a subject where the Standard Level grade would have served the application equally well.

A tutor's job in that conversation is to supply evidence rather than an opinion: here are the marks the student produces on Higher Level questions under time, here is where the losses concentrate. The decision belongs to the student and the school. Nobody should be promising a particular grade at either level, and a provider who does is making a claim they cannot stand behind.

07

Why a Greens family should not buy Chemistry on travel distance

The Greens sits beside a metro station with Sheikh Zayed Road on one side and Al Khail Road on the other, so a tutor can reach it more easily than most Dubai addresses. That convenience is exactly what makes the in-home option tempting and exactly why the arithmetic deserves a look. In-home one-to-one visits in Dubai are quoted from roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel inside the price, and advertised monthly packages of four two-hour visits run at AED 1,599 to 1,799.

Set that against the online rate for the same qualification level and the premium is visible. The extra is transport. For Chemistry specifically there is a second cost, because the usable weekday window in this community runs from about four o'clock, once buses and clubs are accounted for, until roughly half past seven. Mechanism work and graph interpretation need the student alert, and a session pushed to the back of that window by somebody else's drive is a worse session.

There is also a supply argument. Restricting the search to tutors who can reach Al Thanyah by half past four shrinks the pool to whoever is free in western Dubai at that hour. Removing the travel requirement widens it to everyone who teaches Higher Level organic mechanisms, which is the variable that actually changes a Chemistry grade. In a subject where the specialist skill is this narrow, that trade is clearly worth making.

To be unambiguous about the model: IB Gram has no office or centre in Dubai, and no tutor is sent to a UAE address. Home visits are an India-only service. The in-home rates quoted on this page belong to other providers and are shown so the premium can be seen rather than assumed.

08

Chemistry for medicine and engineering: what admissions actually asks

Higher Level Chemistry is a common requirement for medicine and for chemical and biomedical engineering, and it is frequently assumed to be a requirement for far more than that. The honest position is that the requirement belongs to the individual programme and the individual intake year. Check the published entry requirement for the specific course rather than relying on a general rule, because these change and because they differ markedly between jurisdictions.

Separately there is Ministry of Education equivalency, which recognises a foreign school certificate for use in the UAE. The published requirements differ by curriculum. On the British track a student must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education not counted among the five, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level. On the American track, mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test and English proficiency is met by a score of 5 in IELTS academic, 61 in TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the SAT reading and writing section.

No equivalency threshold for the International Baccalaureate is published on this page, because none has been read from a Ministry of Education source. One ranking competitor in this market states a GCSE subject count that does not match the Ministry clarification reported by Gulf Today; inheriting that error would be worse than publishing nothing. Take the Diploma figure from moe.gov.ae or the emirate's attestation authority.

Equivalency is not something a tutoring company performs, guarantees or accelerates, and tutoring is not a requirement for it, for university admission or for school progression. IB Gram describes the process and points to the official channel; the application is between the family and the authority.

09

How many Chemistry hours, and when to buy them

A straight answer is more useful than a range. Standard Level, for a student keeping pace, runs on one weekly hour across two years plus a six-session investigation block, which is roughly sixty to seventy hours in total. Higher Level runs on one weekly hour in the first year, the same investigation block, and two weekly hours from September of the second year, which comes to roughly ninety to a hundred and ten hours.

At the published Dubai specialist band of AED 200 to 450 an hour, Higher Level therefore sits in the high tens of thousands of dirhams across the Diploma, and Standard Level at roughly half of that. Those are market figures rather than ours, and the range is wide because the Dubai market's spread is wide. A sensible plan mixes bands rather than paying one rate for everything: mid-market hours for Structure 1 and bonding, specialist hours for mechanisms, Paper 2 technique and the investigation.

Timing changes the total more than negotiation does. The investigation bought in Year 12 is a one-off block at a quiet point in the calendar. The same work in the spring of Year 13 competes with revision and with organic mechanisms, at the busiest point in the tutoring year, and usually costs two or three times as much for a worse result. Front-loading is the only reliable discount available in this subject.

Six weeks out from a session, what a block can buy depends entirely on what already exists. Sound content with weak Paper 2 technique moves with marked scripts and timed practice. A genuine gap in equilibrium or mechanisms closes partly. The investigation cannot be touched at all, because a fifth of the grade was settled when the report went in. That asymmetry is the argument for the earlier purchase, made with numbers rather than urgency.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around The Greens

Chemistry rates do not vary across these communities. Higher Level cohort sizes do, and so does what families typically need, which is what the notes below describe.

The Views

Shares its Diploma campuses with The Greens, which means it shares the same small Higher Level Chemistry groups. Parents here most often ask about the second year, when organic mechanisms arrive and the gap between the top and the middle of a small class widens quickly.

The Meadows

Served by an established IB campus, so Chemistry questions here tend to be about the investigation rather than about content. That is the cheaper problem to solve: a defined block of sessions with a deadline rather than an open-ended weekly arrangement.

The Springs

Mostly British-curriculum at secondary, so Chemistry enquiries often come from families who moved to a Diploma school at sixteen. Students arriving from IGCSE 0620 or 4CH1 have the content but not the uncertainty and data-analysis work that Paper 1B assumes.

Emirates Hills

Where quotes at AED 500 an hour and upwards appear most often. The honest test is whether the tutor can name the component they are being hired for. A premium hour aimed at organic mechanisms or Paper 2 technique is defensible; one aimed at general revision is not.

Dubai Internet City

Apartment households where both parents commonly work late, so later Chemistry slots go first. The practical constraint is that practical-style discussion and graph work need the student alert, which makes a seven o'clock session less productive than it looks on a calendar.

Al Sufouh

Several long-standing Diploma campuses, some with Higher Level Chemistry groups in the single figures. A small group is not a criticism of a school; it is a structural reason why one-to-one support changes outcomes more in Chemistry than in a subject with a large cohort.

Al Barsha and Al Barsha South

The widest choice of Diploma schools within reach of The Greens and the widest spread of quoted Chemistry rates. Comparing two quotes from this belt without first confirming Higher or Standard Level is how families pay Higher Level prices for Standard Level work.

Jumeirah Village and Motor City

Newer campuses further down Al Khail Road with growing Diploma cohorts. Journey times make in-home Chemistry support expensive in evening minutes as well as dirhams, which is why online delivery is near-universal in this corridor.

Diploma campuses in the Emirates Living and Al Sufouh ring

The schools a Greens student is most likely to sit Higher Level Chemistry in. Worth asking each one how large this year's Higher Level Chemistry group is, because a group in the single figures leaves a struggling student with nobody at the same level to compare working with.

  • GEMS Wellington International School, Al Sufouh
  • Dubai American Academy, Al Barsha

Diploma campuses in Al Barsha South and further down Al Khail Road

Reachable from The Greens on a longer run, and the group most likely to be chosen for a specific Diploma subject combination rather than for proximity. Several run both Chemistry levels alongside Physics and Biology at Higher Level.

British-curriculum schools near The Greens offering A Level Chemistry instead

Students here sit A Level rather than Diploma Chemistry, which is a different assessment with different practical requirements. Families comparing the two routes should compare the assessment structures rather than the reputations, because the work the student does differs substantially.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Say which level and which component

Send four facts: Higher or Standard Level, the school, whether the scientific investigation has started, and which of the six topics the last school report flagged. Those four decide which band of the market you need and stop you paying specialist rates for work the middle of the market covers.

  2. 02

Use the free session as a diagnostic

One full session, free, with no card details taken to book it. The tutor works a past question and a short mechanism task with your child and reports which component is losing marks: Paper 1A speed, Paper 1B uncertainty, Paper 2 command terms, or genuine content gaps in a named topic.

  3. 03

    Mix the bands deliberately

Most families should be buying mid-market hours for Structure 1 arithmetic and bonding, and specialist hours only for organic mechanisms, Paper 2 technique and the investigation. Paying one rate for everything is how a Chemistry budget doubles without the mark moving.

  4. 04

    Book the investigation block early

Around six sessions in Year 12, with a submission deadline attached, covering the research question, uncertainty handling and feedback on the student's own drafts. Twenty per cent of the grade is banked at a predictable one-off cost instead of competing with revision and mechanisms in the spring.

  5. 05

    Review against marked scripts

Progress is judged on complete papers marked against the published criteria, not on how sessions felt. Each review names the component that improved and the one that did not, and where the evidence says a standing weekly hour is no longer earning its cost, that is what the review says.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The premium is explained, not assumed

This page names the three components that justify specialist rates in Chemistry and the ones that do not. Premium Dubai rates reach AED 650 an hour; a parent is entitled to know what the extra contains before agreeing to it, and most providers in this market never say.

Level stated before any rate

Every match says whether it covers Higher Level, Standard Level or both, and which of the six syllabus topics it teaches most often. That removes the mismatch that wastes a term, which is a tutor priced for Higher Level mechanisms who last taught Standard Level content.

Mechanisms taught by convention

Higher Level organic chemistry is assessed on arrow-pushing conventions, so it is taught that way rather than as reactions to memorise. This is the component where a specialist and a generalist produce visibly different results inside a single session.

Paper 1B treated as its own skill

Uncertainty, significant figures and gradient interpretation are taught thinly in most schools, appear in Paper 1B and are assessed again under criterion B of the investigation. Hours spent there count twice, which makes them the highest-yield purchase in the course.

A stated limit on investigation help

Tutors challenge research questions, teach uncertainty on other data and respond to drafts the student wrote. Nobody here produces a report or supplies a draft for submission. In a market where finished assessed work is advertised at fixed prices, that boundary protects the candidate.

Sources named, dates withheld where unverified

Rate bands come from published Dubai rate cards and Bestimate's 2026 cost table. Cambridge and Pearson dates come from the boards. No IB examination or results date appears on this page, because none has been confirmed from the IB's own site.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in The Greens: your questions answered

What does an IB Chemistry Higher Level specialist charge in Dubai?+

Published 2026 rates put Diploma, IGCSE and A-Level specialists at roughly AED 200 to 450 an hour and upwards, with premium named tutors advertised at AED 500 to 650. Qualified subject tutors working online sit between about AED 150 and 300, and budget or university-student tutors between AED 45 and 150. Those are market observations from Dubai rate cards and Bestimate's 2026 cost table, not IB Gram prices. What matters more than the band is which component the hour is aimed at.

Is the premium for a Chemistry specialist worth it over a general science tutor?+

For three parts of the course, yes. Higher Level organic mechanisms are assessed on arrow-pushing conventions that are either exact or worthless. Paper 2 carries forty-four per cent and is marked against command terms, so a good answer of the wrong kind scores nothing. And the scientific investigation is twenty-four marks across four criteria, three of which are not really about chemistry. For the mole, bonding, energetics and Le Chatelier reasoning, the middle of the market teaches them perfectly adequately.

How much does IB Chemistry tutoring cost a Greens family per term?+

A term is about twelve weeks, so one weekly hour is twelve sessions. At the published Dubai middle band of AED 150 to 300 an hour that is roughly AED 1,800 to 3,600 for the term; at specialist rates of AED 200 to 450 it is AED 2,400 to 5,400. Higher Level at two hours a week in the second year doubles it. A sensible plan mixes bands rather than paying one rate for every hour, which is where most of the overspend in this subject comes from.

Which Chemistry topics do Greens families end up paying for twice?+

Organic chemistry, almost always. The first purchase is a generalist who teaches the reactions as transformations to memorise, which produces a student who can predict products but cannot draw mechanisms. The second is a specialist who has to undo the memorised version before teaching the conventional one. Buying the specialist first costs less in total. Higher Level equilibrium algebra runs a close second, for the same reason: it is taught as chemistry when the obstacle is the mathematics.

Can an IB Chemistry tutor help with the Chemistry IA without crossing a line?+

Yes, and the limit is specific rather than vague. A tutor may challenge a research question until the student narrows it to something measurable, teach uncertainty propagation using unrelated data, explain each of the four criteria by letter, read a draft the student wrote and say where it falls short, and press on limitations the student has missed. No tutor here will write the report, produce a draft for submission, or edit one until the words stop being the student's own. Submitting work a candidate did not produce is malpractice.

How many Chemistry sessions does an HL student need before Paper 2?+

Four to eight sessions spent entirely on extended responses is the highest-yield short block in the subject, because Paper 2 carries forty-four per cent of the grade and runs two and a half hours at Higher Level. The sessions have to involve real past questions written under time and marked against the published criteria, with scripts returned annotated. Discussion of answers without marking is a cheaper product that looks similar. Ask which it is before booking.

Is IB Chemistry HL much harder to tutor than SL, and does it cost more?+

It costs roughly double in hours rather than in rate. Papers lengthen, with Paper 1 going from ninety minutes to two hours and Paper 2 from ninety minutes to two and a half, and the practical scheme rises from forty hours to sixty. The additional depth is integrated into the same six topics rather than sitting in a separate block, so it is met continuously. Most Higher Level students need two weekly hours from September of the second year; Standard Level students usually need one.

What does the collaborative sciences project involve, and can a tutor help?+

It is an interdisciplinary project taking around ten hours of the practical scheme, which is forty hours at Standard Level and sixty at Higher Level, and it carries no separate grade. Families should know it exists mainly because it consumes time in a term that is already crowded, not because it needs tutoring. A tutor's useful contribution is scheduling advice: move the scientific investigation earlier so the two do not collide with the start of serious revision.

Does organic chemistry need more tutoring hours than the other themes?+

At Higher Level, yes, and for a structural reason. It arrives late in the course and is assessed as though it arrived early, and the Higher Level demand is mechanisms rather than reactions. The arrow-pushing conventions have to be exact, so a student who narrates products confidently may still score nothing on a mechanism. A quick home test: ask your child where the arrow starts when a hydroxide ion reacts with a halogenoalkane, and what happens to the leaving group.

Do we need a Chemistry tutor with a lab, or is online enough?+

The assessed practical skills are data handling and investigation design rather than manipulation, and both work well over video with screen sharing. Uncertainty propagation, graph work with error bars, gradient interpretation and research-design critique are all done on a screen in school too. The physical practical work belongs to the school's forty or sixty-hour scheme. What a tutor adds is the analysis and write-up skill that criterion B and Paper 1B assess, and that needs a shared screen rather than a bench.

Which schools near The Greens offer DP Chemistry at Higher Level?+

Several Diploma campuses within fifteen to thirty minutes of The Greens run Chemistry at both levels, across the Emirates Living, Al Sufouh, Al Barsha and Jumeirah Village clusters. The more useful question to ask each school is how large this year's Higher Level Chemistry group is. The International Baccalaureate accounted for about seven per cent of Dubai private-school enrolment in 2024-25, which is why Higher Level science groups stay small even at large schools.

Do Dubai medical schools insist on Chemistry at Higher Level?+

Higher Level Chemistry is a common requirement for medicine and for chemical and biomedical engineering, but the requirement belongs to the individual programme and intake year rather than to a country. Check the published entry requirement for the specific course and year, because they change and differ between jurisdictions. Treat any tutoring page that states a universal rule as unreliable, and treat the claim that tutoring is required for admission as false urgency about a process the family controls.

Does an in-home Chemistry tutor in The Greens charge for travel time?+

Travel is inside the quoted price rather than itemised, which is why in-home rates in Dubai sit higher. The market quotes in-home one-to-one visits from roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour, with monthly packages of four two-hour visits advertised at AED 1,599 to 1,799. Against online rates at the same qualification level the difference buys transport. In this community it also costs evening minutes from a window that runs from about four o'clock to half past seven. IB Gram does not make home visits in Dubai.

What is the smallest sensible block of IB Chemistry tutoring to buy?+

Four sessions, aimed at one named component. The two blocks that reliably pay for themselves are Paper 1B data handling, which also feeds criterion B of the investigation, and Paper 2 extended-response technique, which addresses forty-four per cent of the grade. Both are short, both are measurable, and both end. Open-ended weekly arrangements started without a diagnosis are where Chemistry budgets grow without the mark moving, so start with the free diagnostic session.

How does the 2023 Chemistry syllabus change what we are paying to fix?+

The course is now built on two themes, Structure and Reactivity, with three topics each, and the Higher Level depth is integrated into those topics rather than kept in a separate section. That means a Higher Level student cannot schedule the harder material as a block, and a tutor who last taught the earlier guide will cover the right subject at the wrong depth. The assessment also shifted: Paper 1 at thirty-six per cent now splits into multiple choice and data-based sections, so recall drilling buys less than it used to.
