IB Physics Tutor in Dubai Festival City

Hiring an IB physics tutor in Dubai Festival City is partly a timetable problem. Physics is the Diploma subject most likely to involve a double period, an after-school lab session and an investigation deadline that lands in the same fortnight as everything else. This page maps the week a Diploma physics student in Al Badia, Festival Boulevard or Nad Al Hamar actually has, then fits live one-to-one video lessons into it on Gulf Standard Time rather than into a slot a car can reach.

  • Sessions placed around lab afternoons and double periods
  • The five syllabus themes named, not described as comprehensive coverage
  • Investigation support is feedback on your child's own work only

IB & IGCSE in Dubai Festival City

The physics week a Dubai Festival City Diploma student actually has

Start with the timetable, because physics is the Diploma subject most likely to break a tidy tuition plan. Secondary dismissal at the schools Dubai Festival City families use lands between about 2.15pm and 3.30pm. On top of that, a Diploma physics student frequently has a double period that leaves them genuinely tired, a practical session that overruns, and in many schools an after-school science or robotics commitment one afternoon a week. None of this appears on a report, and all of it decides which evenings are usable.

Then the journey. A bus from a Garhoud or Festival City campus reaches Al Badia in minutes and Al Khawaneej or Al Warqa in thirty-five to fifty. Add the half hour for food that every experienced tutor builds in, and the realistic earliest start for a Diploma student is around four o'clock in the inner communities and five or later in the outer ones. For physics specifically, a late evening slot is a poor purchase: the subject asks for sustained algebraic reasoning, and that is the first thing a tired student loses.

Now the investigation. The scientific investigation carries 20 per cent of the physics grade and its internal deadlines are set by the school, not by the board. Those deadlines cluster, because every Diploma science subject sets one and the Extended Essay sits nearby. A family that discovers in February that three deadlines land in the same fortnight has a scheduling emergency that money cannot fully solve. Asking the school for the dates in September is free and is the single most useful planning act available.

Against all of that, an in-home tutor has to arrive inside a narrow window having crossed Garhoud Bridge or the Dubai-Al Ain interchange at the worst hour. The lesson starts when the traffic allows and the missing fifteen minutes come out of the teaching rather than the fee. IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we offer only in India. Lessons here are live one-to-one video on Gulf Standard Time, which means the session starts at the time you booked it.

For physics the online format has a specific advantage beyond punctuality. Physics teaching is mostly working through problems line by line, and a shared screen puts the same working in front of both people at the same size, with the tutor able to annotate the exact line where a unit was dropped or a rearrangement went wrong. A past-paper mark scheme can be opened alongside the student's own attempt. Across a table, the tutor is reading upside down.

The rest of this page sets out the five themes of the current syllabus, what each paper component asks, how the investigation criteria work, where marks go missing in this subject specifically, and how to place sessions in a week that already contains a double period and a lab afternoon.

At a glance

  • Realistic weekday start: around 4pm in Al Badia, 5pm or later from Al Mizhar and Al Khawaneej
  • Physics often carries a double period and an after-school commitment that compress the week further
  • The scientific investigation is 20 per cent of the grade and its deadlines are set by the school
  • Ask for every science and Extended Essay internal deadline in September, not in February
  • A shared screen shows the same working to both people, which matters more in physics than in most subjects
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics arrives in the Diploma from one of two directions and the step feels different depending on which. These are the stages and what each one leaves a student ready or unready for.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme sciences

Integrated or discrete sciences assessed against four criteria, A to D, each on a 1 to 8 scale. The investigating criterion is where MYP most closely resembles what the Diploma will ask for, and it is also the criterion students most often treat as a write-up rather than as a designed piece of work.

A Dubai Festival City student arriving at Diploma physics from MYP usually has sound investigation instincts and uneven mathematics. The gap is almost never conceptual physics; it is rearranging formulae, handling indices and standard form, and manipulating units, all of which are maths skills doing physics work.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE physics or combined science

Cambridge 0625 or Pearson 4PH1 for separate physics, or a combined science entry covering all three subjects more narrowly. Students arriving from a combined entry meet substantially more content in the Diploma than those who sat separate physics, which is worth knowing before DP1 starts rather than in November.

Several schools near Dubai Festival City run IGCSE before splitting at 16, so this is the commoner route locally. The honest warning is that a grade 8 in IGCSE physics does not predict comfort in Diploma physics, because the Diploma's demand for extended written reasoning is new rather than harder.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme physics

Five themes covering space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. Assessed by Paper 1, which contains a multiple-choice section and a data-analysis section, and Paper 2 of structured and extended-response questions, plus a scientific investigation worth 20 per cent.

Higher Level adds content across the themes and raises the extended-response demand. Deira International School runs the IB continuum to Diploma and GEMS Modern Academy at Nad Al Sheba is a long-established Diploma centre, so most physics requests in this corridor come from students at one of a handful of schools with broadly similar timetable shapes.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

This grid is the current physics syllabus split into what sessions are actually bought for, with the part of each theme that costs marks. Take any three to a prospective tutor and ask them to talk about where students go wrong.

Space, time and motion

HL and SL

Kinematics, forces, work and energy, momentum, and circular motion and gravitation. The theme where marks are most often lost to a free-body diagram drawn carelessly, because a missing force makes every line after it wrong however good the algebra is.

The particulate nature of matter

HL and SL

Thermal physics, the gas laws, current and circuits. Circuit questions reward a student who redraws the circuit before calculating, and punish one who starts substituting into formulae from the diagram as printed on the paper.

Wave behaviour

HL and SL

Simple harmonic motion, wave models, superposition, standing waves and the Doppler effect. Interference and diffraction questions are where the algebra is manageable and the physical reasoning is not, so explanation marks go missing more than calculation marks.

Fields

HL and SL

Gravitational, electric and magnetic fields, potential, and electromagnetic induction at Higher Level. Field questions reward sign conventions and consistency; students who treat the minus sign as decoration lose marks they have otherwise earned.

Nuclear and quantum physics

HL and SL

Structure of the atom, radioactive decay, nuclear fission and fusion, and quantum phenomena. Usually taught late in DP2, which makes it the theme most likely to be met under time pressure and therefore the commonest late-booking request.

Data analysis and uncertainties

HL and SL

Graph drawing, gradient and intercept interpretation, absolute and percentage uncertainty, and propagation. This appears in the data-analysis section of Paper 1 and inside the investigation, and it is the single most under-prepared skill in Diploma physics.

Extended-response technique

HL especially

Multi-mark written answers requiring a chain of physical reasoning rather than a calculation. Students lose marks by describing an effect without naming the mechanism, and by writing three sentences that each repeat the first in different words.

The scientific investigation

HL and SL, 20 per cent

An independent investigation on a question of the student's own choosing, marked against published criteria. Thin evaluation and a research question that is too broad to answer with the available equipment are the two commonest and most expensive failures.

Mathematics for physics

HL and SL

Rearranging formulae, indices and standard form, trigonometry, logarithms and gradients. A student who is not fluent here will appear weak across all five themes, because the same gap resurfaces in each of them wearing different clothes.

Practical skills and apparatus reasoning

HL and SL

Choosing apparatus, identifying systematic and random error, suggesting improvements. Assessed in written form on the papers as well as in the investigation, which means it can be taught and practised without a laboratory bench.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes that fit a physics week rather than fighting it. All run as live one-to-one video lessons on Gulf Standard Time, with working and mark schemes shared on screen.

The non-lab afternoon slot

One fixed weekly hour on the afternoon that carries no double period and no after-school science commitment. Finding that afternoon is the first job, and it usually requires looking at the actual timetable rather than asking the student, who will say every day is equally busy and be wrong.

  • Placed on the lightest science afternoon of the week
  • Early enough that sustained reasoning is still available
  • Same tutor across the term, because physics is cumulative
  • Reviewed after mocks and cut if the subject has stabilised

Weekend problem-solving block

Ninety minutes to two hours on a weekend morning, where there is no school-run constraint and no competing homework. This is the right place for full past-paper sections, for extended-response practice and for anything that needs an unbroken stretch of attention rather than a tired hour.

  • Full Paper 2 sections attempted under timing, then marked
  • Data-analysis practice with real graph drawing
  • Works for students in Al Khawaneej or Al Warqa with long routes
  • Two subjects can share one weekend morning

Investigation support, scheduled backwards

Two or three sessions timed against the school's own internal deadline: one at the research-question stage, one on the method and apparatus reasoning, one on a complete draft. The tutor reads what the student has written and says where it falls short against the criteria. The tutor does not write or complete any part of it.

  • Research question narrowed to something answerable with the apparatus
  • Uncertainty treatment planned before data is collected, not after
  • Evaluation discussed explicitly, since it is the thinnest section in most reports
  • No drafting, editing to completion or supplied material

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai Festival City

01

Finding the afternoon a physics session can actually live on

Ask for the timetable, not the student's opinion. A Diploma physics student will tell you every afternoon is busy, and the timetable will show that one of them carries a single period and no practical. That afternoon is where the weekly session belongs, and locating it is a ten-minute job that most families never do because the question is never framed this way.

The specific conflicts to look for are three. A physics double period, after which a student has done two hours of the subject and is a poor candidate for a third. A timetabled practical session, which frequently overruns and which leaves the student with a write-up to begin that evening. And an after-school commitment, whether that is a science club, a sports fixture or a Creativity, Activity, Service obligation, which eats the whole window rather than part of it.

Against those, map the journey. Al Badia students are home within minutes of dismissal; Mirdif and Al Warqa students on a multi-stop route are thirty to forty minutes behind them; Al Mizhar and Al Khawaneej students closer to fifty. Then add the half hour for food and decompression. The table below shows how those two things combine into a usable start time for each community, which is the number a booking should be made against.

One further consideration specific to physics. Because the subject depends on sustained algebraic reasoning, the quality of a 7.30pm session is noticeably lower than that of a 4.30pm one for the same student. That is not true of every subject; vocabulary recall and essay planning survive a tired hour reasonably well. For physics, a weekend morning block is often a better purchase than a second weekday evening, and it costs the same.

The five themes, and what each one demands

The current IB physics syllabus is organised into five themes: space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. Higher Level covers additional content within those themes rather than a separate list. Your child's teacher holds the subject guide, which is the authority on exactly what sits where, and we do not reproduce board documents, so ask for the school's copy and work from it.

What the themes demand differs more than their names suggest. Space, time and motion is largely algebraic and rewards clean free-body diagrams. The particulate nature of matter contains the circuit work, which rewards redrawing a circuit before calculating anything. Wave behaviour is where physical reasoning carries more marks than algebra, so a student who is strong at calculation and weak at explanation will look suddenly worse here.

Fields is the theme where sign conventions matter most and where students most often lose marks they have genuinely earned, by treating a minus sign as a typographical detail. Nuclear and quantum physics is usually taught last, which means it is met in DP2 under time pressure and is the commonest subject of a late tuition request. A family that knows this in September can plan for it instead of reacting in March.

For a tutoring plan the useful consequence is that a diagnosis should be theme-specific rather than general. A student is rarely weak at physics; they are weak at explanation-heavy questions, or at circuits, or at anything involving uncertainty. Two marked papers sorted by theme and by question type will usually show one dominant pattern, and a plan aimed at that pattern costs less than one aimed at the subject as a whole.

What each paper component actually asks

Diploma physics is assessed by two written papers and the scientific investigation. Paper 1 contains a multiple-choice section and a data-analysis section. Paper 2 contains structured and extended-response questions. The investigation is internally assessed against published criteria and carries 20 per cent of the final grade. For the exact weightings and durations at your child's level, use the school's copy of the subject guide rather than any website, including this one.

The component most students under-prepare is the data-analysis section of Paper 1. It asks for graph drawing and interpretation, gradient and intercept reasoning, and handling of absolute and percentage uncertainty. These are learnable procedures, they appear every series, and almost nobody practises them deliberately because they do not feel like physics. A short block on this one component is the best-value physics purchase available.

Paper 2's extended-response questions are the Higher Level discriminator. A multi-mark answer wants a chain of physical reasoning in which each step follows from the last and names a mechanism. What students write instead is three sentences restating the first in different words, which earns one mark and looks like three. Teaching the difference takes marked practice with a mark scheme open beside the attempt, which is exactly what a shared screen makes easy.

Multiple choice deserves a note of its own. It is the section students assume needs no preparation and it is where careless reading costs the most marks per minute. The useful drill is not more content but a timed set followed by a discussion of every wrong answer, asking what the distractor was designed to catch. Most students find the same two or three traps catching them repeatedly, which is a fixable pattern rather than a knowledge gap.

04

The investigation, scheduled backwards from the school's deadline

The scientific investigation carries 20 per cent of the physics grade and the deadline that governs it is set by the school. This is the single most important scheduling fact in Diploma physics, because every other science subject sets one too and the Extended Essay sits in the same stretch of the calendar. Three internal deadlines in one fortnight is a routine occurrence and a predictable one, and the fix is to ask for all of them in September.

Working backwards is straightforward once the date is known. A complete draft should exist two to three weeks before the deadline, so that feedback can be acted on rather than merely received. Data collection has to finish before that, which means the method and the apparatus reasoning must be settled earlier still, and the research question earlier than that. A question chosen two weeks before the deadline produces a report that cannot score well whatever the student does with it.

The two expensive failures are both avoidable at the planning stage. The first is a research question too broad to answer with available equipment, which produces data that cannot support a conclusion. The second is uncertainty treatment planned after the data is collected, which usually means it cannot be done properly at all. Both are conversations rather than lessons, and both belong at the start where they are cheap.

The boundary here is absolute. A tutor may discuss the research question, explain each criterion, model a comparable investigation on a different topic, read a draft your child has written and say where it falls short, and teach citation. A tutor may not write, draft, complete, rewrite or supply any part of it. The report is declared as the student's own work and moderated by the IB, so the consequence of anything else lands on your child, not on whoever was paid.

Where physics marks are actually lost

  • Check the unit explicitly on every answer until it becomes automatic
  • Standard layout: formula, substitution, answer with unit, every time
  • Extended response needs a causal chain, not three restatements
  • A four-session uncertainty block usually outperforms four sessions on content

Four patterns account for most of it, and only one is about not knowing physics. The first is units and standard form. A student computes correctly, writes the number, and omits or mismatches the unit, or leaves an answer in the wrong power of ten. This is an arithmetic and habit problem, it appears in every theme, and it is fixed by marked practice in which the unit is checked explicitly every single time.

The second is compressed working. A multi-step calculation written as two lines cannot be awarded method marks, because the method is not visible. Students do this to save time and lose more than they save. Teaching a standard layout, formula written out, substitution shown, answer with unit, takes one session and pays back across both papers for two years.

The third is explanation that names no mechanism. An extended-response question asking why something happens wants a causal chain. What arrives is a description of what happens, three times. This is the Higher Level discriminator and the hardest of the four to fix, because it requires the student to be shown the mark scheme repeatedly until they can see which of their sentences earned nothing.

The fourth is uncertainty, which sits in both the data-analysis section and the investigation and is the most neglected skill in the subject. Absolute uncertainty, percentage uncertainty, propagation through a calculation, and what an uncertainty implies about a conclusion. None of it is conceptually hard and almost none of it is practised deliberately. For most students a four-session block here moves more marks than four sessions on any theme.

06

Practical skills without a laboratory bench

  • Most practical marks are awarded for written reasoning, which is teachable remotely
  • The school's laboratory is the right place for the apparatus; a tutor should not try to replace it
  • Graphs and uncertainties are easier to teach on a shared screen than across a table
  • No tutoring substitutes for a student who is missing the practical sessions themselves

Parents reasonably ask how practical work can be supported when the tutor is not in the room. The answer is that most of the practical marks in Diploma physics are awarded for reasoning that is expressed in writing, not for manipulating apparatus. Choosing an appropriate instrument, identifying systematic versus random error, explaining why a measurement was repeated, suggesting a specific improvement rather than a generic one: all of that is taught and practised on paper.

The laboratory itself belongs to the school, and it should. Your child has access to equipment, to a teacher who knows it, and to technicians who maintain it. A tutor who offered to replicate that would be offering something worse than what the student already has. What a tutor adds is the thinking either side of the bench: designing the investigation properly before it runs, and interpreting the data honestly afterwards.

Data analysis is where online delivery is genuinely superior. A student's graph can be shown on screen and annotated, the line of best fit discussed, the gradient computed and its units reasoned about, and the uncertainty bars drawn in while both people watch. Done across a table, the tutor is reading a graph upside down and pointing at it from the wrong side, which is a surprisingly large practical difference.

One honest limitation. A student who has not actually used the apparatus will write about it less convincingly than one who has, and no amount of tutoring substitutes for having done the practical. If your child is skipping laboratory sessions, that is the problem to solve first, and it is a conversation with the school rather than a purchase from us.

07

Higher Level or Standard Level, and what follows from it

Higher Level physics covers additional content within the same five themes and demands more extended written reasoning. It is the extended-response demand rather than the extra content that catches students, because the content can be learned and the reasoning habit has to be built. A student who is comfortable with Standard Level calculation and uncomfortable writing a four-sentence causal explanation will find Higher Level harder than the syllabus difference suggests.

The consequence of the choice sits in university admissions, and requirements are set by individual institutions and courses rather than by any general rule. Engineering, physics and some computer science programmes commonly specify Higher Level physics or a Higher Level science. Medicine and life sciences usually specify chemistry and biology instead. The reliable method is to read the admissions page for the specific course in the specific year and to involve the school's university counsellor early.

For UAE routes, Ministry of Education equivalency is a separate matter from a university's own entry requirements. For the British track, the sourced requirement is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic education, plus one Advanced Level subject at no less than grade E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. For the IB Diploma we publish no points figure, because none has been read on an official Ministry source.

The tutoring consequence is about timing rather than about level. If Higher Level physics is required by a target course, the money belongs in DP1 building the reasoning habit while there is time for it to become automatic. If it is not required, Higher Level physics chosen for its appearance on a transcript will consume tutoring hours for two years and deliver nothing that needed to be delivered. Ask before the choice is locked.

Starting from Dubai Festival City, and the limits we state

  • Send the level, the current themes, the investigation deadline and the timetable
  • Free trial lesson, then a written note sorted by theme and component
  • No home visits in the UAE, no UAE office, no board or regulator approval claimed
  • No IB dates published here; the school's IB coordinator holds the real calendar

Send four things: the level, the themes currently being taught, the school's internal deadline for the scientific investigation, and a photograph of the week's timetable. The timetable is the item nobody sends and the one that most improves the plan, because it shows which afternoon carries the double period and which is free. We then match a tutor to the level and run a free trial lesson as live one-to-one video on Gulf Standard Time, at no cost.

Afterwards you receive a written note setting out where marks are being lost, sorted by theme and by component rather than described in general terms, and a recommended shape. For many physics students that shape is a four-session uncertainty and data-analysis block followed by extended-response practice, rather than weekly cover across all five themes. For a Higher Level student in DP1, a weekly slot across both years is frequently the right answer and we will say so.

The limits, stated plainly. IB Gram does not run home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India. There is no UAE office, centre or branch, and we claim none. We hold no IB, regulator or board approval. We publish no IB examination or results dates, because the IB's own site blocks automated checking and an unverified date a parent plans around is worse than silence. We do not supply subject guides, past papers or mark schemes as downloads.

And the investigation boundary, once more, because it is the thing this market bends most often. A tutor may discuss the question, explain the criteria, model a comparable investigation on a different topic, read your child's own draft and say where it falls short, and teach citation. A tutor may not write, draft, complete or supply any part of it. Ask every provider you consider to put that in writing, and keep the reply.

Where we tutor

The physics week by community

These notes are about time rather than property: when a Diploma physics student in each community is realistically free, and what that does to the choice of tutor.

Al Badia

Shortest journeys in the cluster and the only community where a 3.45pm physics session is genuinely achievable on a non-lab day. That matters because physics rewards the earlier window, when a student can still hold a four-step rearrangement in their head.

Festival Boulevard and Marsa Al Khaimah

Apartments beside the mall, with retail traffic slowing late-afternoon access. Fine for an online slot and unreliable for a visiting one. Turnover in these buildings also makes tutor continuity worth asking about, which matters in a cumulative subject.

Nad Al Hamar

Long school runs put arrival close to 5pm, so the usable physics window is narrow. Families here benefit most from booking the slot in advance rather than looking for one in October, because the early-evening hours fill across the whole emirate.

Mirdif

A large catchment with its own IB continuum school. Bus routes from Garhoud-area campuses run thirty to forty minutes, so a Mirdif student at a Festival City school is in the later window even though the two areas are close in distance.

Al Mizhar and Al Khawaneej

The longest bus routes in the cluster and arrival often close to 5pm. For physics specifically this pushes work into the hours when sustained reasoning is hardest, which is an argument for weekend blocks rather than more weekday hours.

Al Warqa and Al Rashidiya

Dense housing with heavy local school traffic at dismissal. Plenty of physics tutors from other curricula, but a tutor who has not taught the current Diploma themes will not know where the data-analysis marks sit or what the investigation is marked on.

Dubai Silicon Oasis

Large British-curriculum provision nearby and a younger population. Good supply for IGCSE physics and thin supply for Diploma Higher Level, which is the pattern across the emirate rather than a feature of this neighbourhood.

Dubai International Academic City

University campuses, which keeps the budget tutoring band supplied. Undergraduate physicists and engineers can drill the mathematics for physics effectively, and are not the right people for investigation criteria or extended-response technique.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai Festival City

Dubai Festival City and Garhoud

Deira International School runs the IB continuum through to the Diploma and Universal American School offers it on an American spine. Both will have Diploma physics cohorts with double periods and laboratory sessions in the timetable, which is why the first question about a physics tutoring slot is which afternoon the labs fall on.

Most Higher Level physics requests along this corridor come from these schools, and their internal investigation deadlines are the dates that drive tuition timing.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the timetable, not just the subject

A photograph of the week shows which afternoon carries the physics double period, which carries a practical, and which is genuinely light. That one image places the session better than any conversation about availability, and it takes a parent thirty seconds to send.

  2. 02

Ask the school for every internal deadline

The scientific investigation deadline, the deadlines for the other sciences, and the Extended Essay milestones. These cluster, and knowing the cluster in September turns a February emergency into a plan. The school will give you all of them in one reply if you ask for them together.

  3. 03

Take the free trial lesson on a light afternoon

One live one-to-one video session at no cost, placed on the afternoon you intend to book rather than at a weekend hour that flatters everybody. Physics asks for sustained reasoning, so the trial should test whether your child can give it at that time of day.

  4. 04

Start with uncertainties and data analysis

For most Diploma physics students this four-session block moves more marks than four sessions on any single theme, because the procedures are finite and almost nobody practises them deliberately. It also feeds directly into the investigation, so the same hours do two jobs.

  5. 05

Review after mocks, sorted by component

A marked mock is free diagnostic data. Sort the lost marks by component rather than by theme: multiple choice, data analysis, structured, extended response. Most students show one dominant weakness, and the next block should aim at it rather than at general revision.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Built around the physics timetable

Double periods, practical sessions and after-school commitments decide which evenings exist, and nobody asks about them. A live video lesson starts when it is booked, which makes the earlier window usable, and physics is the Diploma subject that benefits most from the earlier window.

Matched to the level, not the subject

Higher Level physics is distinguished by its extended-response demand rather than by extra content, and a tutor comfortable with Standard Level calculation is not automatically the right match. We ask which level before matching and expect the tutor to talk about the difference.

Uncertainties taught as a component

Absolute and percentage uncertainty, propagation, and what an uncertainty implies about a conclusion sit in both Paper 1 data analysis and the investigation. It is the most neglected skill in Diploma physics and the cheapest to fix, which is why it goes first in most plans.

Investigation support with a written boundary

Question narrowing, criteria explanation, a comparable model on a different topic, and feedback on your child's own draft. No drafting, no completing, no supplied material. The report is moderated by the IB and declared as the student's work, so that boundary protects your child.

Honest about what online cannot do

The school's laboratory is the right place for apparatus and a tutor should not pretend to replace it. What a tutor adds is the reasoning either side of the bench. A student skipping practical sessions has a problem to solve with the school, not a purchase to make.

No borrowed authority and no predictions

We explain what KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoHRE and the Ministry of Education govern and claim approval from none of them. We publish no IB dates, because the IB's site blocks automated checking, and we make no grade predictions, because nobody honestly can.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai Festival City: your questions answered

When can a physics session fit around a Dubai Festival City school week?+

On the afternoon that carries no physics double period and no practical session, which is usually one specific day and is visible on the timetable rather than obvious to the student. Start times run from about 3.45pm in Al Badia to 5pm or later from Mirdif, Al Mizhar and Al Khawaneej once bus routes and a half hour for food are allowed for. Physics benefits more than most subjects from the earlier window, because sustained algebraic reasoning is the first thing a tired student loses.

Which themes does a Dubai Festival City physics student cover across DP1 and DP2?+

Space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. Higher Level covers additional content within those same themes rather than a separate list. Your child's teacher holds the subject guide, which is the authority on exactly what sits where, and we do not reproduce board documents, so work from the school's copy. Nuclear and quantum physics is usually taught last, which makes it the commonest late tuition request.

How much of the IB physics grade is the scientific investigation?+

Twenty per cent, and the deadline governing it is set by the school rather than by the board. That matters because every Diploma science sets one and the Extended Essay milestones sit nearby, so three internal deadlines in a single fortnight is routine. Ask the school for all of them in September. A complete draft should exist two to three weeks before the deadline so that feedback can be acted on rather than simply received.

How far can a tutor go in helping with the physics investigation report?+

With the thinking, yes; with the writing, never. A tutor may narrow a research question until it is answerable with available apparatus, explain each criterion, discuss systematic and random error, model a comparable investigation on a different topic, and read a draft your child has written and say where it falls short. A tutor may not write, draft, complete or supply any part of it. The report is moderated by the IB and declared as your child's own work.

How can practical physics be supported if the tutor is not in the room?+

Most practical marks in Diploma physics are awarded for reasoning expressed in writing: choosing an appropriate instrument, distinguishing systematic from random error, explaining a repeat, suggesting a specific improvement. All of that is taught on paper. The laboratory belongs to the school, where the equipment and the technicians are, and a tutor who offered to replace it would be offering something worse. Graph and uncertainty work is actually easier on a shared screen than across a table.

Why does my child calculate correctly in physics but still lose marks?+

Usually units and compressed working. An answer written without its unit, or left in the wrong power of ten, loses the mark however good the arithmetic was. A multi-step calculation written as two lines cannot be awarded method marks because the method is not visible. Teaching a standard layout of formula, substitution, answer with unit takes about one session and pays back across both papers for two years. Both are habits rather than knowledge gaps.

What is the data-analysis section of Paper 1 and how do we prepare for it?+

It asks for graph drawing and interpretation, gradient and intercept reasoning, and handling of absolute and percentage uncertainty, including propagation. These are finite learnable procedures that appear every series, and almost nobody practises them deliberately because they do not feel like physics. A four-session block on this one component usually moves more marks than four sessions on any single theme, and it feeds directly into the scientific investigation as well.

What makes Higher Level physics harder than Standard Level?+

Additional content within the same five themes, plus a much heavier extended-response demand, and it is the second of those that catches students. A multi-mark written answer wants a causal chain in which each step follows from the last and names a mechanism. Students instead write three sentences restating the first, which earns one mark and looks like three. Content can be learned in weeks; the reasoning habit takes months, which is why Higher Level support belongs in DP1.

Do tutors travel to homes in Al Badia or Mirdif for physics lessons?+

No. IB Gram does not run home visits anywhere in the UAE; that service exists only in India. For physics the online format is better rather than merely more convenient, because teaching the subject is mostly working through problems line by line. A shared screen puts the same working in front of both people at the same size, lets the tutor annotate the exact line where a unit was dropped, and allows a mark scheme to sit beside the student's own attempt.

Which themes do Dubai Diploma students most often need help with?+

Fields and nuclear and quantum physics, for different reasons. Fields is where sign conventions matter most and where students lose marks they have otherwise earned by treating a minus sign as decoration. Nuclear and quantum physics is usually taught last, so it arrives in DP2 under time pressure with mocks and investigation deadlines competing for the same weeks. Wave behaviour is a close third, because it rewards physical reasoning in words rather than calculation.

Is a grade 8 in IGCSE physics a good predictor of Diploma physics?+

Less than parents expect. A strong IGCSE grade shows the content was learned, and Diploma physics asks for something partly new: extended written reasoning, uncertainty treatment, and an independent investigation marked against criteria. Students arriving from a combined science entry rather than separate physics meet substantially more content as well. The honest check is whether the student can write a four-sentence causal explanation, not whether they can do the calculations.

How many weekly physics sessions suit a Dubai Festival City Diploma student?+

One, in almost every case, placed on the right afternoon. A second weekday evening is usually worse value than a weekend morning block, because physics depends on sustained reasoning and a 7.30pm session delivers less than a 10am one. Where a Higher Level student is genuinely behind, the better answer is a longer weekend block plus the weekday hour rather than three tired evenings. Review it after the mocks and cut if the subject has stabilised.

Does weak maths cause weak physics grades?+

Frequently, and it is the commonest misdiagnosis in the subject. Rearranging formulae, handling indices and standard form, trigonometry and gradients are mathematics doing physics work. A student without fluency there appears weak across all five themes, because the same gap resurfaces in each of them wearing different clothes. Fixing the mathematics first often lifts physics without anybody being paid to teach physics, which is why a diagnosis should look at both.

Do universities require Higher Level physics for engineering?+

Many do, and some accept alternatives, and requirements are set course by course and change between admissions cycles, so no tutoring page should give you a rule. Engineering, physics and some computer science programmes commonly specify Higher Level physics or a Higher Level science. Open the admissions page for the specific course in the specific year and involve the school's university counsellor early. Separately, Ministry of Education equivalency is a different matter from a university's own entry requirements.

What should the first month of physics tuition produce?+

Three things, none of them a grade. Your child should know which component is costing them marks, stated as multiple choice, data analysis, structured questions or extended response. You should hold a written note sorted that way. And one habit should visibly change, most often writing the unit on every answer or laying out working so method marks can be awarded. Grade movement takes longer, and a provider that opens with a prediction has told you how it sells.

Place the session, then fix the component

Physics is the Diploma subject where the timetable does most of the damage: a double period, a practical that overruns, and an investigation deadline that lands beside two others. So send a photograph of the week along with the level and the school's investigation deadline. We will place a live one-to-one video session on the afternoon that can actually carry it, run the free trial at no cost, and come back with a written note sorted by component rather than by theme. For most students the first block is uncertainties and data analysis, and it is the cheapest marks on the paper.
