IB Maths Tutor in Dubai Festival City

An IB maths tutor in Dubai Festival City is usually hired for one of four reasons: Paper 1 without a calculator, Paper 3 at Higher Level, the exploration, or a route chosen in Year 11 that no longer fits. This page prices each of those jobs separately, in AED, with the market bands attributed. Lessons reach Al Badia, Festival Boulevard and the eastern suburbs as live one-to-one video on Gulf Standard Time, matched to Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation rather than to maths in general.

  • Matched to AA or AI and to the exact level, never to maths generally
  • Paper weightings and durations stated, not described as significant

IB & IGCSE in Dubai Festival City

What an IB maths tutor is actually being paid to fix

Break the cost down by job rather than by month, because IB mathematics is four separate problems wearing one subject name. The first is Paper 1 in Analysis and Approaches, which is sat without a calculator and which exposes any student who has been leaning on a graphic display calculator for routine algebra. The second is Paper 3, which exists only at Higher Level and asks for sustained reasoning across an extended problem rather than recall. The third is the exploration, worth a fifth of the final grade. The fourth is a route decision taken before Year 12 that is now the wrong one.

Each of those costs a different amount to address, and that is the useful way to think about a budget. A Paper 1 algebra weakness is a procedural fix: six to eight focused sessions of non-calculator practice, marked, with the errors classified. A Paper 3 weakness is slower, because sustained reasoning is a habit rather than a technique. Exploration support is short and front-loaded by design. A route mismatch is not a tutoring problem at all in the first instance; it is a conversation with the school.

The market bands are the ones published across Dubai and read in October 2026. Unitors advertises IB tuition from AED 200 an hour. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts IB, IGCSE and A-Level specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, and TutorChase publishes AED 270. The budget online band sits at AED 33 to 52 at Tutopiya and AED 45 to 65 at EdFlik. In-home one-to-one is quoted at AED 180 to 500 because travel sits inside the figure. None of these is an IB Gram price.

Where Dubai Festival City families most often waste money in this subject is on the wrong course. A tutor advertising IB maths who is strong in Applications and Interpretation will teach an Analysis and Approaches student competently for weeks before the mismatch shows, because the two courses share plenty of content. What they do not share is the emphasis: AA leans on algebraic manipulation, calculus and proof, AI on modelling, statistics and technology-led reasoning. Ask which one before you book, and ask the tutor to say how they differ.

IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we offer only in India. For Al Badia and the eastern suburbs, lessons are live one-to-one video on Gulf Standard Time. For mathematics specifically that format is better rather than merely cheaper: a shared screen shows the same working to both people at the same size, a non-calculator question can be annotated line by line as the error appears, and the graphic display calculator screen can be shown directly rather than described.

The rest of this page sets out what each paper is worth, where marks actually go missing by topic, what the exploration criteria reward, what each of those fixes costs against the market bands, and which route UAE and overseas admissions expect. It is written to be used, so take the paper weightings to your child's maths teacher and check them against the school's own copy of the subject guide.

At a glance

  • Four separate jobs: Paper 1 non-calculator, Paper 3 at HL, the exploration, and the route decision
  • The exploration carries 20 per cent of the final grade in both AA and AI, at both levels
  • Market bands, October 2026: AED 33-65 budget; AED 150-300 qualified; AED 200-450+ specialist
  • AA and AI are different courses; a tutor strong in one is not automatically right for the other
  • A route mismatch is a conversation with the school before it is a tutoring purchase
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Mathematics runs through every IB programme and changes shape at each transition, which is where most Dubai Festival City families discover a gap. These are the three stages and what each one actually demands.

PYPAges 3-12 · Pre-KG to Year 6

Primary Years Programme mathematics

Number, pattern, shape, space and data handling taught through units of inquiry, with no external examination. The mathematical content is modest; the valuable habit built here is explaining a method out loud, which is exactly what criterion-based marking will ask for three years later.

For Dubai Festival City families this is where times-table and mental-arithmetic fluency should be settled. A student who reaches Middle Years without automatic recall will spend Diploma Paper 1 preparation relearning it under time pressure, at four or five times the hourly rate. The cheapest maths tuition anyone ever buys is in Year 4.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme mathematics

Assessed against four criteria, A to D, each on a 1 to 8 scale, with the totals converted to a 1 to 7 grade. Criterion A is knowing and understanding, and it is the one most parents assume is the whole subject. The investigating-patterns and applying-in-context criteria are where students with good arithmetic routinely lose bands.

MYP mathematics in Dubai is also where the Diploma route is effectively decided, because standard and extended mathematics in Years 9 and 10 feed naturally into AI and AA respectively. A family thinking about Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level should be asking about this in Year 9, not Year 11.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme mathematics

Two courses, each at Higher and Standard Level. Analysis and Approaches emphasises algebraic fluency, calculus and proof, with Paper 1 sat without a calculator. Applications and Interpretation emphasises modelling, statistics and technology, with the calculator permitted throughout. Both carry a mathematical exploration worth 20 per cent, and Higher Level in both adds a Paper 3.

Deira International School runs the IB continuum through to Diploma, so a Dubai Festival City student may make this choice inside the same campus they have attended for years. That continuity is an advantage, and it also means the route decision is often made on momentum rather than on an honest look at which course suits the student.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

This grid is the IB mathematics syllabus broken into the topics tuition is actually bought for, with where the marks go in each. Take it to a prospective tutor and ask them to talk about any three.

Number and algebra

AA and AI, SL and HL

Sequences, series, exponents, logarithms, binomial expansion, and at AA HL proof and complex numbers. This is the topic that decides Paper 1 in AA, because every manipulation has to be exact without a calculator. Errors here are almost always procedural rather than conceptual.

Functions

AA and AI, SL and HL

Domain and range, composite and inverse functions, transformations, and rational functions at Higher Level. Marks are lost on domain restrictions that students treat as decoration, and on sketches drawn without the asymptotes that carry the marks.

Geometry and trigonometry

AA and AI, SL and HL

Triangles, circular functions, identities and equations, with vectors at AA HL. Trigonometric equations are the commonest place a student finds some of the solutions and loses the rest by not considering the full interval required.

Calculus

AA SL and HL, AI at a lighter weighting

Differentiation, integration, kinematics and, at AA HL, techniques including substitution and parts plus differential equations. The AA HL calculus questions in Paper 2 are where the long structured marks sit, and where untidy intermediate working costs method marks.

Statistics and probability

AI SL and HL heavily; AA more lightly

Data presentation, regression, probability distributions and hypothesis testing in AI. The AI student's commonest loss is interpretation: a correctly computed regression described in words that say nothing about the context earns the calculation and loses the rest.

The mathematical exploration

All four courses, 20 per cent

An independent piece of mathematics on a topic of the student's choosing, marked against five criteria covering presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and the use of mathematics. The commonest failure is a topic too large to handle properly in the space available.

Paper 1 technique, AA

SL and HL

Sat without a calculator, which is a separate skill from doing the mathematics. Exact values, surds, fractions and clean algebraic steps. Students who have practised only with a calculator in hand lose marks they could do, which makes this the highest-return thing to drill.

Paper 3, Higher Level only

AA HL and AI HL

An extended problem-solving paper where each part builds on the last, so an early error propagates. The skill is sustained reasoning and reading ahead, and it is the component that responds least well to last-minute preparation.

Graphic display calculator skills

All four courses

Solving equations, finding intersections, regression, distributions and numerical calculus on the device. Weak calculator skills cost marks in AI and in AA Paper 2, and over-reliance on the device hides the algebra gap that then surfaces in AA Paper 1.

MYP to DP transition mathematics

Year 11 into Year 12

The step into either Diploma course assumes fluent algebraic manipulation, confident handling of indices and surds, and comfort rearranging formulae. A student who met those topics but never automated them will feel the Diploma as a sudden difficulty rather than a gradual one.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes, matched to the four jobs described above. All are delivered as live one-to-one video lessons on Gulf Standard Time, with the calculator and the working visible on a shared screen.

Non-calculator drilling block

Six to eight sessions aimed squarely at Analysis and Approaches Paper 1. Every question is attempted without a calculator, marked, and the errors classified as sign errors, index errors, fraction errors or method errors. Classification is the point: a student who knows which of the four they make can stop making it.

  • Exact values, surds and fractions until they are automatic
  • Errors classified rather than simply corrected
  • Short, defined end point, so the cost is bounded
  • The highest-return block in AA at either level

Weekly one-to-one across the course

The standard arrangement for a student carrying Higher Level mathematics across DP1 and DP2. Mathematics builds cumulatively more than any other Diploma subject, so continuity with one tutor is worth more here than elsewhere. Ask about continuity before booking rather than after a handover in February.

  • Same tutor across both Diploma years where possible
  • Paced to the school's own scheme of work
  • Paper 3 strategy introduced early, not in the final term
  • Pausable around mock weeks without losing the slot

Exploration support, front-loaded

Two or three sessions at the topic-choosing and question-setting stage, where a bad choice is still cheap to correct, and one session on a complete first draft. The tutor reads what your child has written and says where it falls short against the criteria. The tutor does not write, draft or complete any part of it.

  • Topic scoped to something finishable, which is most of the battle
  • Criteria read aloud against the student's own draft
  • Personal engagement and reflection discussed explicitly
  • No drafting, editing to completion or supplied material

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Dubai Festival City

Each tutor below is listed against a named maths course and level: Analysis and Approaches at Higher or Standard Level, or Applications and Interpretation at Higher or Standard. The distinction is not administrative. A tutor fluent in AI statistics and modelling is not automatically the person for an AA HL proof question, and the reverse holds too.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai Festival City

01

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation

This is the decision that determines everything else, and it is made in Year 11 by students who often cannot articulate the difference. Analysis and Approaches emphasises algebraic fluency, calculus and proof, and its Paper 1 is sat without a calculator. Applications and Interpretation emphasises modelling, statistics and technology-led problem solving, with the calculator permitted throughout both papers. Both exist at Higher and Standard Level, and both carry a mathematical exploration worth a fifth of the grade.

The common error is treating AI as the easier course. It is not easier; it is different. An AI Higher Level student handles substantial statistics, regression and distributions, and has to interpret results in context, which is a demanding and distinct skill. What AI does not demand is the exact non-calculator manipulation that AA Paper 1 lives on. A student with weak algebra and strong interpretive instincts may genuinely be better served by AI and should not be talked out of it.

The reverse error is choosing AI to avoid difficulty and discovering a closed door later. Some university programmes, particularly in engineering, mathematics, physics and economics at competitive institutions, specify Analysis and Approaches or set a Higher Level mathematics requirement that AI Standard Level does not meet. Requirements vary by institution and change, so the only reliable method is to read the admissions page for the specific course and the specific year, and to involve the school's university counsellor early.

For a Dubai Festival City family the practical sequence is: ask the school which course the student is currently tracked towards, ask why, and then test the assumption against two or three target degree subjects rather than against a general sense of ambition. If a change is warranted, the window is the end of Year 11 and the very start of Year 12. After that the cost of switching rises sharply, in both tuition and lost ground.

02

What each paper is worth and how long it runs

Weightings are the most useful thing a parent can know and the thing almost no tutoring page states. At Standard Level in both courses, Paper 1 and Paper 2 each carry 40 per cent of the final grade and the exploration carries 20 per cent. At Higher Level in both courses, Paper 1 and Paper 2 each carry 30 per cent, Paper 3 carries 20 per cent and the exploration carries 20 per cent. Check those against your child's school copy of the subject guide, because the guide is the authority and we do not reproduce it.

Durations follow the same pattern. Standard Level Papers 1 and 2 run for ninety minutes each. Higher Level Papers 1 and 2 run for two hours each, and Paper 3 for one hour. The arithmetic worth doing is this: at Higher Level, Paper 3 and the exploration together carry 40 per cent of the grade and occupy one hour of examination plus a piece of coursework. That is a very large share of the grade sitting in the two components students prepare for least.

This is where a cost argument becomes concrete. If 20 per cent of the grade sits in a sixty-minute paper that responds to strategy and practice, then a block of sessions aimed at Paper 3 is better value than the same number of sessions spread across general revision. The same logic applies to the exploration, where a handful of well-timed hours at the question-setting stage can move a criterion band that an entire term of content teaching will not touch.

The table below is the version to put on the fridge. Read the final column as the honest tutoring priority rather than as a recommendation to buy more. For many students the correct conclusion is that Paper 2 is already fine, that Paper 1 needs a short drilling block, and that nobody has yet thought about Paper 3 at all. That is a cheaper plan than weekly cover across everything, and a better one.

Where IB maths marks actually go missing, topic by topic

  • Four repeatable habits account for most lost marks before content gaps do
  • Classify errors from two marked papers before buying any hours
  • Marked timed practice fixes reading habits; explanation does not
  • One sentence of context after every statistical result is the cheapest AI fix available

Most lost marks in Diploma mathematics are not caused by not knowing the mathematics. They are caused by four repeatable habits, and naming them is most of the fix. The first is sign and index slips under time pressure, which is a Paper 1 problem in Analysis and Approaches specifically. The second is working shown so compressed that method marks cannot be awarded, which is a Paper 2 problem at both levels.

The third is answering less than the question asked. A trigonometric equation question that specifies an interval wants every solution in that interval; a student who finds two and stops has done the mathematics and lost the marks. A function sketch wants the asymptotes and intercepts, not a plausible curve. These are reading habits, and they respond to marked practice rather than to explanation.

The fourth is interpretation, which is the AI student's version of the same problem. A regression is computed correctly, a correlation coefficient is quoted, and then the written answer says nothing about what it means for the context in the question. The calculation marks arrive and the interpretation marks do not. Teaching a student to write one honest sentence about context after every statistical result is a cheap intervention with a visible effect.

The diagnostic method that works is unglamorous. Take the student's last two marked papers, classify every lost mark into one of those four buckets plus a fifth for genuine content gaps, and count. Most students produce a strongly skewed distribution, and the plan then writes itself. A tutor who starts by doing this rather than by teaching topic one is a tutor who intends to make the hours count.

04

The mathematical exploration: a fifth of the grade, marked on five criteria

The exploration is an independent piece of mathematics written by the student on a topic of their own choosing, and it carries 20 per cent of the final grade in all four courses. It is marked against five criteria covering presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection, and the use of mathematics. Your child's teacher holds the current criteria and mark allocations in the subject guide; ask for them and work from the school's copy, because we do not reproduce board documents.

The commonest failure has nothing to do with mathematical ability. It is a topic too large to handle properly in the space available, chosen because it sounded impressive. A narrow question answered thoroughly outscores a grand question answered superficially, every time, because the criteria reward depth of engagement and quality of reflection rather than ambition of subject matter. Fixing a topic choice takes one conversation and saves a term of frustration.

The second commonest failure is reflection treated as a conclusion. Criterion-based reflection means engaging honestly with what the mathematics did and did not show, what assumptions were made, and what a further investigation would change. A paragraph that restates the result in different words scores in the lowest band. This is teachable quickly and almost never taught, because it does not feel like mathematics.

The boundary matters more here than anywhere else in the course. A tutor may discuss topic choice, explain each criterion, model a comparable exploration on a different topic, read a draft your child has written and say where it falls short, and teach citation. A tutor may not write, draft, complete, rewrite or supply any part of it. The work is declared as the student's own and moderated by the IB, so the consequence of anything else lands on your child.

05

What maths tuition costs, priced by the job

Hourly bands are the market's language and jobs are the parent's, so here is the translation. The bands first: budget online tuition at AED 33 to 52 from Tutopiya and AED 45 to 65 from EdFlik; a qualified online subject tutor across the market at roughly AED 150 to 300, with Unitors advertising IB from AED 200; specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270; in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 500 with travel included; and a premium tier at AED 650 from BartyED. All published by those providers and read in October 2026.

Now the jobs. A non-calculator drilling block for AA Paper 1 is six to eight sessions and does not need the top of the market, because the work is repetitive marked practice with error classification. Paper 3 strategy does need a specialist, because a tutor who has not worked through extended problem-solving papers cannot teach reading ahead. Exploration support is three or four hours total but wants someone who knows the criteria. Route advice is usually free and belongs with the school.

That breakdown is why a monthly subscription is the wrong default for mathematics. Bestimate's monthly estimate for an exam-year specialist at one weekly hour is AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above, and a two-year weekly commitment at that level is a serious sum. Several students need exactly that. Many need a block, a gap, another block and an intensive, which costs considerably less and is pointed at the components carrying the marks.

None of the figures above is an IB Gram rate. Our terms follow the free trial lesson and a diagnostic conversation, because quoting one hourly number across MYP number work and AA Higher Level Paper 3 would be misleading in both directions. What the table does is let you price a plan before you talk to anybody, and check any quote you already hold against what the market publishes.

Which maths route universities actually want

This is where a cost decision becomes a consequence decision, and where honesty is more useful than reassurance. Requirements are set by individual institutions and courses, they differ between countries, and they change between admissions cycles. So nobody should be telling a Dubai Festival City family a general rule. What we can say is which questions to ask and where the answers live.

For UAE universities, the first thing to establish is Ministry of Education equivalency, which is separate from a university's own entry requirements. For the British track the sourced requirement is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic education, plus one Advanced Level subject at no less than grade E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. For the IB Diploma we publish no points figure, because none has been read on an official Ministry source, and verification belongs on moe.gov.ae.

For overseas admissions, maths-heavy degrees in engineering, mathematics, physics, computer science and economics are the ones most likely to specify Analysis and Approaches or a Higher Level mathematics grade. Medicine, life sciences and most humanities subjects are usually more flexible. The reliable method is to open the admissions page for the specific course, in the specific year, and to check whether AI Standard Level satisfies it. The school's university counsellor does this for a living.

The practical point for tuition spending is sequencing. If a target degree requires Higher Level mathematics, the money belongs in DP1 building the fluency to survive it, not in DP2 rescuing a student who should have switched. If no target degree requires it, then Higher Level AA chosen for prestige is an expensive decision that will consume tutoring hours for two years. Ask the question before the route is locked, because afterwards every answer costs more.

QUESTIONS TO SETTLE BEFORE LOCKING A MATHS ROUTE
QuestionWho holds the answerWhy it changes the tuition plan
Which course is my child currently tracked towards, and why?The school's maths departmentMomentum, not fit, decides this more often than parents expect
Do the target degrees specify AA or Higher Level maths? Each university's course admissions pageDetermines whether HL fluency is worth two years of support
Does AI Standard Level satisfy those requirements? The same admissions pages, course by courseSometimes yes, which saves a great deal of money
What does MoE equivalency require for the chosen track?moe.gov.ae and the attestation authoritySeparate from a university's own entry requirements
When is the last point a switch is realistic? The schoolEnd of Year 11 or very early DP1; later costs far more
07

The graphic display calculator: tool or hiding place

  • Run the paper-only test: expand, rearrange, add algebraic fractions
  • Calculator over-reliance is an AA Paper 1 problem that hides until DP2
  • Under-taught calculator skills cost AI marks in both papers
  • A shared screen shows the tutor the exact keystroke, which a table does not

A graphic display calculator is required equipment in both Diploma mathematics courses, and how a student uses it is one of the better predictors of their Paper 1 grade in Analysis and Approaches. Used well it solves equations, finds intersections, runs regressions and handles distributions quickly, freeing attention for the reasoning. Used as a crutch it conceals an algebra gap for two years and then the gap arrives, fully grown, in a paper where the device is not allowed.

The diagnostic is simple enough for a parent to run. Ask the student to expand and simplify a bracketed expression, rearrange a formula for a different variable, and add two algebraic fractions, all on paper. A fluent AA student does those without hesitation. A student who reaches for the calculator or stalls has a Paper 1 problem regardless of what their Paper 2 marks look like, and that is worth knowing in DP1 rather than in the spring of DP2.

The opposite failure is real too, particularly in Applications and Interpretation. Students who have never been taught the device properly lose marks in both papers because they cannot run a regression or read a distribution efficiently, and then spend time they do not have doing by hand what the calculator exists to do. Calculator skills are teachable in a few sessions and are among the clearest returns on a tutoring hour in AI.

For online lessons this is an advantage rather than a limitation. The calculator screen can be shown directly on a shared screen, so the tutor sees exactly which menu the student is in and which keystroke went wrong, rather than watching a device across a table and guessing. Several of the commonest calculator errors are invisible to someone sitting beside the student and obvious to someone looking at the same screen.

Starting from Dubai Festival City, and the limits we state

  • Name the course: AA HL, AA SL, AI HL or AI SL. It changes the match entirely
  • Send two marked papers; the error classification costs nothing and decides the plan
  • Free trial lesson, written note, then a decision about hours
  • No home visits in the UAE, no UAE office, no board approval claimed

Send four things: which of the four maths courses your child is in, which paper is going wrong, the last two marked papers if you have them, and the hour the student is genuinely at a desk. The marked papers are the most valuable item, because the error classification can be done before any money is spent. We then match a tutor to that exact course and level and run a free trial lesson as live one-to-one video on Gulf Standard Time, at no cost.

Afterwards you receive a written note setting out where the marks are going, sorted into the four habit categories plus genuine content gaps, with a recommended shape and number of hours. For many students that recommendation is a short block rather than a weekly booking. Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is the one course where a two-year weekly arrangement is often genuinely right, and we will say which situation you are in.

The limits, plainly. IB Gram does not run home visits in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service. There is no UAE office, centre or branch. We hold no IB, regulator or board approval and claim none. We publish no IB examination or results dates, because the IB's own site blocks automated checking and an unverified date is worse than silence; your child's IB coordinator holds the real calendar. We do not supply subject guides, past papers or mark schemes as downloads.

And the boundary on the exploration, once more, because it is the thing most often bent in this market. A tutor may discuss the topic, explain each criterion, model a comparable piece on a different subject, read your child's own draft and say where it falls short, and teach citation. A tutor may not write, draft, complete or supply any part of it. Ask every provider you consider to put that in writing, and keep the reply.

Where we tutor

Where IB maths tuition reaches around Dubai Festival City

These notes describe the local mathematics tutoring market rather than the neighbourhoods themselves: how deep supply runs, and at which level it thins out.

Al Badia

Closest to Deira International School, so local tutors here are more likely to recognise the IB continuum and the MYP criteria that precede the Diploma. Supply is reasonable at Middle Years level and thin for Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, which is the pattern across the emirate.

Festival Boulevard and Marsa Al Khaimah

Apartment communities where tenancy turnover affects tutor continuity more than availability. For a two-year Diploma maths commitment, continuity matters more than in any other subject, because the course builds on itself from the first term to the last.

Nad Al Hamar

Villas with long school runs, so a visiting maths tutor arrives late in the afternoon by default. Mathematics is the subject least suited to a tired evening slot, which makes the earlier online window genuinely more valuable here than elsewhere.

Mirdif

The deepest tutoring market in the eastern suburbs, with an IB continuum school of its own. Standard Level maths support is readily found locally. Higher Level AA, and Paper 3 preparation specifically, is where even Mirdif families end up looking beyond the neighbourhood.

Al Mizhar and Al Khawaneej

Low-density villa communities with long bus routes. Local maths supply is sparse at every Diploma level, and families here reach the conclusion that an online specialist is simply the better option earlier than most in the cluster.

Al Warqa and Al Rashidiya

Established housing with a mix of curricula, so plenty of mathematics tutors trained on CBSE or British specifications. Strong teachers, but a tutor who has never taught the AA exploration criteria will not know what the 20 per cent is actually marked on.

Dubai Silicon Oasis

Dense and young, with a large British-curriculum school nearby. Good supply for IGCSE mathematics and much thinner supply for the two Diploma courses, which are a different specification with a different assessment structure.

Dubai International Academic City

University campuses, which is why the AED 33 to 65 budget band exists in this emirate. Undergraduate mathematicians are genuinely useful for drilling non-calculator algebra, and genuinely unsuited to exploration criteria or Paper 3 strategy.

Dubai Festival City and Garhoud

Deira International School runs the IB continuum through to the Diploma, and Universal American School offers the Diploma on an American spine. How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the course and the paper

Analysis and Approaches Higher Level Paper 1 is a different request from Applications and Interpretation Standard Level Paper 2. Those two facts determine the tutor, the shape of the work and the band it needs, and they take one line to supply. Without them, the first session is spent on reconnaissance you have paid for.

  2. 02

Send the last two marked papers

Every lost mark gets classified: sign and index slips, compressed working, answering less than the question asked, missing interpretation, or a genuine content gap. Most students produce a strongly skewed result, and the plan then writes itself. This is the cheapest diagnostic step available and it happens before any booking.

  3. 03

    Take the free trial lesson

One live one-to-one video session at no cost, with the tutor matched to the exact course and level. Expect timed questions and a conversation about method rather than a pitch. If the match is wrong, say so afterwards and it changes before any money is involved.

  4. 04

Buy the block, not the subscription

A non-calculator drilling block, a Paper 3 strategy block, three or four hours on the exploration. Mathematics responds well to defined blocks with measurable outputs. Higher Level Analysis and Approaches is the one course where a weekly arrangement across both Diploma years is frequently the right answer instead.

  5. 05

Check the route against two target degrees

Before DP1 ends, open the admissions pages for two courses your child is considering and check what they require of mathematics. If Higher Level is needed, the tutoring plan is about fluency. If it is not, a Higher Level course chosen for prestige will consume hours for two years with nothing at the end that required them.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to one of four courses, not to maths

AA HL, AA SL, AI HL and AI SL assess different things, and a tutor strong in modelling and statistics is not automatically right for non-calculator algebra and proof. We ask which course before matching, because the mismatch takes weeks to surface and the term is gone by then.

Weightings and durations stated

Paper 1 and Paper 2 carry 40 per cent each at Standard Level, 30 per cent each at Higher, with Paper 3 and the exploration at 20 per cent each at Higher Level. Knowing that redirects spending towards the components carrying marks instead of across general revision.

Error classification before purchase

Two marked papers, every lost mark sorted into one of five categories, done before a booking. Most students turn out to have one dominant failure mode rather than a general weakness, and a plan aimed at it costs less than a plan aimed at everything.

Exploration support with a written boundary

Topic scoping, criteria explanation, a comparable model on a different subject, and feedback on your child's own draft. No drafting, no completing, no supplied material. The exploration is moderated by the IB and declared as the student's own work, so that boundary protects your child.

Rates published with their sources

Every AED band on this page belongs to a named provider and was read in October 2026. Three of six researched competitors publish no price at all and two quote US dollars to families who transact in dirhams, which makes a sourced table the cheapest differentiator available.

Honest about route advice

Whether a target degree requires Analysis and Approaches is a question for the university's own admissions page and the school's counsellor, not for a tutoring company. We will tell you to ask them, and we will not publish a general rule that changes between institutions and between years.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai Festival City: your questions answered

What is the difference between IB Maths AA and AI for a Dubai Festival City student?+

Analysis and Approaches emphasises algebraic fluency, calculus and proof, and its Paper 1 is sat without a calculator. Applications and Interpretation emphasises modelling, statistics and technology, with the calculator permitted throughout. Both run at Higher and Standard Level and both carry a mathematical exploration worth 20 per cent. AI is not the easier course; it is a different one, demanding substantial statistics and genuine interpretation. A student with weak algebra and strong interpretive instincts may be better served by it.

How much does an IB maths tutor cost around Dubai Festival City?+

Market figures rather than ours, all published and read in October 2026: Unitors advertises IB tuition from AED 200 an hour; Bestimate's table puts IB specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above; TutorChase publishes AED 270; budget online runs AED 33 to 52 at Tutopiya and AED 45 to 65 at EdFlik; in-home one-to-one is AED 180 to 500 with travel inside the figure. Our own terms follow the free trial lesson and a diagnosis, because the four maths courses need different things.

What is Paper 3 in IB mathematics and does my child sit it?+

Paper 3 is an extended problem-solving paper sat only at Higher Level, in both Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation. It runs for one hour and carries 20 per cent of the final grade, and each part builds on the last, so an early error propagates through everything after it. It responds least well of any component to last-minute preparation, which is why strategy work belongs in DP1 and DP2 rather than in the final weeks before the papers.

How much is the maths exploration worth and what is it marked on?+

It carries 20 per cent of the final grade in all four Diploma mathematics courses. It is marked against five criteria covering presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and the use of mathematics. Your child's teacher holds the current criteria and mark allocations in the subject guide, and that is the copy to work from. The commonest failure is a topic too large to handle properly, chosen because it sounded impressive, and it is fixed in one conversation.

Can a tutor help write the mathematical exploration?+

No. A tutor may discuss topic choice, explain each criterion, model a comparable exploration on a different topic, read a draft your child has written and say where it falls short, and teach citation properly. A tutor may not write, draft, complete, rewrite or supply any part of it. The exploration is declared as the student's own work and moderated by the IB, so anything else is malpractice and the consequence falls on your child rather than on whoever was paid.

Why does my child do well in Paper 2 but badly in Paper 1?+

Almost always because Paper 1 in Analysis and Approaches is sat without a calculator, and the student has been doing the mathematics with a device in hand for years. The underlying knowledge is fine; the exact manipulation is not automatic. Run the test yourself on paper: expand a bracketed expression, rearrange a formula, add two algebraic fractions. If any of those causes hesitation, a six to eight session non-calculator drilling block is the highest-return purchase available in this subject.

Does a tutor come to our home in Al Badia for maths lessons?+

No. IB Gram does not run home visits anywhere in the UAE; that service exists only in India. Mathematics is the subject where online delivery is most clearly better rather than merely cheaper. A shared screen shows the same working at the same size to both people, a non-calculator question can be annotated line by line as the error appears, and the graphic display calculator screen can be displayed directly instead of described across a table.

When should a Diploma student start maths tutoring?+

In DP1 if the target is Higher Level, because mathematics builds cumulatively more than any other Diploma subject and a gap in the first term reappears in every term after it. For a Standard Level student coping with the content, a short block aimed at one named weakness is usually enough, timed around the school's mock window. Starting in the spring of DP2 with a structural algebra gap is the most expensive version of this purchase and the least likely to succeed.

Which IB maths course do UAE and overseas universities prefer?+

It depends entirely on the course and the institution, and requirements change between admissions cycles, so no tutoring page should give you a general rule. Maths-heavy degrees in engineering, mathematics, physics, computer science and economics are the ones most likely to specify Analysis and Approaches or a Higher Level grade. Open the admissions page for the specific course and year, check whether AI Standard Level satisfies it, and involve the school's university counsellor early rather than late.

Is it too late to switch from AA to AI, or the other way?+

The realistic window is the end of Year 11 and the very start of DP1, and after that the cost of switching rises sharply in both tuition and lost ground. The decision sits with the school, so that is the first conversation. Before having it, check what two or three target degrees actually require of mathematics, because a switch made to avoid difficulty can close a door and a switch made for prestige can consume two years of tutoring hours.

How many sessions does a non-calculator weakness take to fix?+

Typically six to eight, if they are structured as marked practice with the errors classified rather than as general revision. The classification is what makes it work: sign errors, index errors, fraction errors and method errors are different problems, and a student who knows which one they make can stop making it. A term of weekly general maths support usually does not fix this, because the non-calculator practice never becomes the explicit point of the hour.

What should we send a tutor before the first maths session?+

Four things. Which of the four courses your child is in, AA or AI and Higher or Standard. Which paper or component is going wrong. The last two marked papers, which are the single most valuable item because every lost mark can be classified before any money is spent. And the hour your child is realistically at a desk, allowing for the school run from Al Badia, Nad Al Hamar or Mirdif. Those four lines shorten the diagnosis by weeks.

Does weak calculator skill cost marks in Applications and Interpretation?+

Yes, in both papers, and it is one of the clearest returns on a tutoring hour in that course. A student who cannot run a regression, read a distribution or find an intersection efficiently loses time they do not have and then attempts by hand what the device exists to do. Calculator technique is teachable in a few sessions. On a shared screen a tutor can see exactly which menu the student is in, which is not possible across a table.

Is Higher Level maths worth it if no target degree requires it?+

Often not, and almost nobody will tell you so. Higher Level Analysis and Approaches chosen for prestige consumes tutoring hours across two years and risks a grade that helps nothing, while a confident Standard Level result in the right course leaves time for the subjects that do carry the application. Check what two or three target degrees actually require before the route is locked. If none specifies Higher Level mathematics, that is a real finding and worth acting on.

Do you publish IB maths exam dates for Dubai schools?+

No, deliberately. The IB's own site blocks automated checking, so no IB session or results date in this project has been confirmed from the IB itself, and a date a parent plans around is the worst possible thing to get wrong. UAE schools sit the May examinations; your child's IB coordinator holds the actual windows and the internal deadlines, including the exploration deadline, which is the one that affects tuition timing most. For Cambridge and Pearson, sourced dates do exist elsewhere on this site.

Price the component, not the subject

IB mathematics is four jobs with one name, and the grade sits unevenly across them: at Higher Level, Paper 3 and the exploration together carry 40 per cent. So the useful question is not what a maths tutor costs per hour but which component is leaking marks and what the smallest fix for it looks like. Send the course, the paper and two marked papers. The error classification costs nothing, the free trial lesson costs nothing, and the written note that follows will tell you whether you need a block, a term or a conversation with the school.
