IB MYP Tutor in Dubai Festival City

The hardest thing about finding an IB MYP tutor in Dubai Festival City is that almost everybody treats the Middle Years Programme as generic middle school. It is not: every subject is marked against four criteria on a 1 to 8 scale, and the totals convert to a 1 to 7 grade through published boundaries. A tutor who cannot name the criteria for your child's subject will teach content competently and leave the marks where they were. This page gives you the questions to ask, then delivers live one-to-one video lessons on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Matched to the subject group and to the criteria, not to a year level
  • Criterion letters explained so an MYP report finally makes sense
  • Personal Project support is supervision and questioning, never drafting
  • Live one-to-one video on Gulf Standard Time, no travel in the rate

Why MYP tutoring goes wrong, and what to ask instead

An MYP report arrives with a 1 to 7 grade and four letters beside it, and most parents read the grade and ignore the letters. The letters are the useful part. Every MYP subject is assessed against four criteria, A to D, each marked on a scale from 1 to 8, and the totals are converted to the reported grade using boundaries published in the subject guide. A student can be strong on two criteria and weak on two and come out with a middling grade that explains nothing.

This is where tutoring in Dubai routinely misfires. A parent sees a grade 4 in sciences and books a science tutor, who teaches the current unit thoroughly. The student's knowledge improves and the grade does not move, because the marks were being lost on the criterion covering inquiry and design, or on the one covering reflection on the impact of science, and nobody looked. Three months of competent teaching aimed at the wrong criterion is a real and common outcome.

So the question to ask a prospective tutor is not whether they know the subject. It is whether they can name the four criteria for that subject and say what each one assesses. A tutor who has taught MYP answers in a sentence. A tutor who has taught middle school generally will talk about the subject instead, which is the tell. You do not need any knowledge of the programme yourself to hear the difference, which is why this page is built around questions.

There is also a scarcity point worth being honest about. The International Baccalaureate accounted for 7 per cent of private school enrolment in Dubai in 2024-25, against 37 per cent on the UK curriculum and 26 per cent Indian, so the MYP teaching pool is a small slice of a large market. Applying a driving radius to that slice, and then an available after-school hour, leaves very few people in the eastern suburbs who have actually marked against these criteria.

IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we offer only in India. For Al Badia, Festival Boulevard, Nad Al Hamar and Mirdif the delivery is live one-to-one video on Gulf Standard Time. The reason that matters for MYP specifically is that the useful session involves reading the student's own marked work against a criterion descriptor, and a shared screen puts the task sheet, the rubric and the student's attempt side by side for both people.

What follows is the detail: the eight subject groups and the criteria each uses, how the 1 to 8 marks become a 1 to 7 grade, how the Community Project and Personal Project timelines work, what MYP eAssessment is, and where the real gap sits when a student moves from MYP into the Diploma.

At a glance

  • Every MYP subject uses four criteria, A to D, each marked 1 to 8
  • Criterion totals convert to the reported 1 to 7 grade using published boundaries
  • Marks are usually lost on one or two criteria, not across the subject
  • Ask a prospective tutor to name the criteria for your child's subject before booking
  • IB enrolment was 7 per cent of Dubai's private market in 2024-25, so the MYP pool is small
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

MYP spans five years and changes substantially across them, and what tutoring should do differs at each end. These are the stages that matter for a Dubai Festival City family.

MYP 1-3Ages 11-14

MYP Years 1 to 3, roughly Years 7 to 9

The years where criterion-referenced habits are formed. Students meet the four-criteria structure, learn what an inquiry question looks like, and either do or do not develop the habit of reflecting on their own work in writing. The Community Project typically sits at the end of this phase, in MYP 3 or 4 depending on the school.

This is the cheapest and most effective place for a Dubai Festival City family to intervene, because nothing is at stake in certificate terms and the habits built here carry into MYP 5 and then into the Diploma. A term aimed at how to write a reflection is a small purchase with a long return.

MYP 4-5Ages 14-16

MYP Years 4 and 5, roughly Years 10 and 11

Subjects become more demanding and the criteria descriptors expect more independence. The Personal Project runs through MYP 5 and is assessed against its own criteria. Schools that enter students for MYP eAssessment do so at the end of MYP 5, leading to the IB MYP Certificate for those who meet the requirements.

This is also where the Diploma route is effectively decided, because standard and extended mathematics streams in MYP 4 and 5 feed into Applications and Interpretation and Analysis and Approaches respectively. A family thinking about Higher Level mathematics should be asking about the stream now rather than in Year 11.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme, after MYP

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. The step up is less about content than about external examination technique, which MYP does not emphasise, and about mathematical fluency, which MYP assesses but does not drill.

Deira International School runs the IB continuum through to the Diploma, so a Dubai Festival City student may move from MYP 5 to DP1 within the same campus. That continuity helps, and it also means the transition gap is sometimes assumed to be smaller than it is, particularly in mathematics and in written science explanations.

MoEAll year groups

Mandatory UAE subjects alongside MYP

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are required in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum. KHDA required these arrangements to be in place by the start of the 2025-26 academic year, or April 2026 for schools whose year begins in April, with instructional time calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit.

KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and states that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited. Support in these subjects works from the school's approved material, because using different or additional content needs prior Ministry permission.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the MYP subject groups, with what the criteria in each actually ask for. Pick your child's weakest two and ask any prospective tutor to talk about the criteria rather than the topic.

Language and Literature

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover analysing, organising, producing text and using language. Students lose bands on analysing, because they summarise what a text says rather than examining how it achieves its effect. A tutor who marks against the descriptor rather than reading for general quality is what moves this.

Language Acquisition

MYP 1-5, by phase

Criteria cover comprehending spoken and visual text, comprehending written and visual text, communicating, and using language. Students are placed in phases rather than year groups, so the first useful question is which phase your child is in, not which year.

Individuals and Societies

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating and thinking critically. Thinking critically is where most bands are lost: a student presents two views and does not evaluate them, which is a specific omission rather than a general weakness.

Sciences

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. The last of those surprises parents most, and it is assessed, so a student who writes nothing about impact leaves a whole criterion scoring low.

Mathematics

MYP 1-5, standard and extended

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Students with strong arithmetic routinely lose bands on investigating patterns, because generalising and justifying a rule is a different skill from calculating.

Design

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, and evaluating. Design is the subject where process documentation carries the marks, so a good final product with a thin design folder scores badly, which frustrates capable students every year.

Arts

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, developing skills, thinking creatively and responding. As in Design, the process journal is heavily weighted, and students who produce strong work without documenting how they got there lose bands they cannot recover later.

Physical and Health Education

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, planning for performance, applying and performing, and reflecting and improving performance. Written planning and reflection are assessed alongside performance, which is why a strong athlete can still receive a middling grade.

The Personal Project

MYP 5

An independent project with its own criteria covering planning, applying skills and reflecting. It runs across MYP 5 with a supervisor at the school. Support means supervision, questioning and feedback on the student's own process journal, never contributing to the product or the report.

Interdisciplinary units

MYP 1-5

Units assessed against their own criteria covering evaluating, synthesising and reflecting across two or more subject groups. Students often treat these as a double workload rather than a distinct assessment, which costs bands in the synthesising criterion specifically.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes that suit criterion-referenced work. All run as live one-to-one video lessons on Gulf Standard Time, with the task sheet, the rubric and the student's own work on a shared screen.

A single report-reading session

One session in which the tutor goes through your child's MYP report and marked tasks and tells you which criterion is costing the grade. For a large share of families this is the whole purchase: once the weak strand is named, the student and the school can address it without a term of paid lessons.

  • Criterion profile read against the subject descriptors
  • A written note naming the weak strand in plain words
  • Often ends the engagement, which is the point
  • Starts with the free trial lesson, so it costs nothing

Criterion-targeted block

Four to six sessions aimed at one criterion in one subject: investigating patterns in mathematics, reflecting on impacts in sciences, thinking critically in individuals and societies, analysing in language and literature. Each of these is a teachable skill with a recognisable shape, and progress is visible on the next marked task.

  • One criterion, one subject, measurable on the next task
  • The student's own marked work used as the material
  • Defined end point, so the cost is bounded
  • Repeatable on a second criterion once the first lifts

Personal Project supervision support

Two or three sessions across MYP 5 timed against the school's milestones: one on the goal and the inquiry, one on the process journal, one before submission. The tutor questions, explains criteria and gives feedback on what the student has written. The tutor does not contribute to the product or draft the report.

  • Goal narrowed to something achievable and documentable
  • Process journal habits established early rather than reconstructed late
  • Criteria read aloud against the student's own entries
  • No drafting, no product contribution, no supplied material

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Dubai Festival City

The tutors below teach MYP subjects and are listed against a subject group rather than a year. MYP marking is criterion-referenced, so the useful match is somebody who can read your child's criterion profile and say which strand is costing the band, rather than somebody who simply knows the topic being taught that term.

01

Reading an MYP report properly

Take the report and find the four criterion marks for the subject you are worried about. Each is on a 1 to 8 scale. Add them and you have a total, usually out of 32 in a subject with four criteria, which the school converts to the reported 1 to 7 grade using boundaries published in the subject guide. Your child's teacher holds that guide and can show you the boundary table; we do not reproduce board documents, so ask for the school's copy.

The pattern in the four marks is the whole diagnosis. A student with marks of 7, 6, 3 and 3 and a student with 5, 5, 5, 4 may receive similar grades and have entirely different problems. The first has two specific weaknesses that can be named and taught. The second is uniformly middling and needs something broader. Booking a subject tutor without looking at this distinction is how families spend a term on the wrong thing.

The criterion names are the next layer. In sciences, a low mark on the criterion covering inquiring and designing is a different problem from a low mark on the one covering reflecting on the impacts of science. The first means the student does not know how to frame a testable question or plan a method; the second means they are writing nothing at all about implications, which is often simply because nobody told them it was assessed.

This is why the first useful session in MYP tutoring is frequently a reading session rather than a teaching session. An hour spent going through the report and two or three marked tasks against the descriptors tells a parent more than a term of content coverage, and it is cheap because it is one hour. Several families go no further than that, which is a perfectly good outcome and the reason the free trial lesson exists.

02

The eight subject groups and what their criteria ask for

MYP organises learning into eight subject groups: language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical and health education, and design. Each group has its own four criteria with its own descriptors, and the four are not variations on knowing the subject. They separate knowledge from process, from communication, and from reflection or application.

The practical consequence is that a student can be excellent at a subject and middling at the subject as MYP assesses it. The clearest example is design, where process documentation carries substantial weight: a student who builds a good solution and keeps a thin design folder scores badly, and no amount of making better things will fix it. Arts works similarly through the process journal. Capable students find this genuinely unfair until it is explained to them.

Mathematics has its own version of the mismatch. The criterion covering investigating patterns asks the student to generalise a rule and justify it, which is a different activity from calculating accurately. A student with fluent arithmetic and no experience of writing a justification will lose a band there consistently, and the repair is short and specific rather than a term of mathematics teaching.

Sciences has the criterion parents least expect, covering reflection on the impacts of science. It is assessed, it has its own descriptor, and students who write nothing about implications are leaving an entire criterion at the bottom of the scale. In most cases this is not inability; it is that nobody explained that a paragraph about impact was required. One session fixes it permanently.

Questions that reveal whether a tutor knows MYP

Because MYP is the least widely understood of the three programmes, credential claims are the least informative here. Ask about the structure instead. A tutor who has taught and marked MYP answers these quickly. One who has taught middle school generally will answer about the subject, which is the distinction you are listening for and which requires no knowledge of the programme on your part.

Start with four. Name the four criteria for this subject and say what each assesses. What is each criterion marked out of? How does a school convert those marks to the reported grade? And which criterion do students in this subject most often lose bands on, and why? A specialist produces concrete answers; a generalist produces reassurance.

Then the programme-level questions. What is the difference between the Community Project and the Personal Project, and when does each sit? What is an interdisciplinary unit assessed on? What is MYP eAssessment and does this school use it? And what would you do with my child's process journal, exactly? That last one matters, because the honest answer is read it and ask questions, never write in it.

Finally the operational ones, which apply to any tutor in the UAE. Do you hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, which u.ae states is granted free of charge for two years? Will you teach every session or could it be reassigned? And what would make you tell me you are not the right tutor for this student? Write the answers down, because a week later every provider sounds alike in memory.

04

The Community Project and the Personal Project

MYP carries two independent projects. The Community Project usually sits in MYP 3 or MYP 4 depending on the school and is linked to service in the community. The Personal Project runs through MYP 5 and is the larger of the two, with its own criteria covering planning, applying skills and reflecting, and a supervisor appointed at the school. Both are assessed, and both depend heavily on documentation rather than on the visible outcome.

That emphasis on documentation is the thing families most often discover too late. A student who builds something impressive and keeps no process journal has very little evidence to be assessed against, and the journal cannot be reconstructed convincingly at the end. Establishing the journal habit in the first weeks is therefore worth more than any amount of help later, and it costs almost nothing because it is a routine rather than a skill.

The second common failure is a goal too large to achieve or document in the time available. A Personal Project goal chosen for ambition rather than feasibility produces a thin report regardless of effort, because the criteria reward evidence of planning and reflection rather than scale. Narrowing the goal is a single conversation at the start, and it is the highest-value support available on either project.

The boundary here is strict and it is where this market most often bends. A tutor may discuss the goal, explain each criterion, ask the questions a good supervisor would ask, model a comparable project on a different topic, read what the student has written and say where it falls short, and teach citation. A tutor may not contribute to the product, draft the report, or write in the process journal. The project is the student's own work and is declared as such.

MYP eAssessment and the MYP Certificate

  • Some schools enter MYP 5 for eAssessment and the MYP Certificate; others report internally
  • Where it applies, on-screen examination practice becomes relevant in MYP 5
  • Where it does not, the criterion profile and the Personal Project are the focus
  • Ask the school directly; the answer reshapes the whole final-year plan

Some schools enter MYP 5 students for MYP eAssessment, which combines on-screen examinations with moderated ePortfolios and can lead to the IB MYP Certificate for students who meet the requirements. Others do not, and report MYP grades internally instead. Which applies to your child's school changes what MYP 5 looks like substantially, and many parents do not know which they are in.

Where eAssessment applies, MYP 5 acquires an external examination element that the rest of the programme does not have, and that is a different kind of preparation: timed, on-screen, with its own question styles. A student who has been assessed only through coursework-style tasks for four years meets a new format in the final year, and the useful tutoring there is practice with the format rather than more content.

Where eAssessment does not apply, MYP 5 remains criterion-referenced throughout and the Personal Project is the main set-piece. In that case the sensible tutoring focus is the criterion profile and the project, and there is no examination technique to build until DP1. Buying examination practice in that situation is spending on a skill that is not being assessed.

So ask the school one question: does this school enter students for MYP eAssessment and the MYP Certificate? The answer is a single line and it reshapes the whole MYP 5 plan. It is also a useful test of a prospective tutor, because somebody who has worked in MYP schools in Dubai will know that practice varies and will ask you the same question before proposing anything.

06

The MYP to Diploma gap, subject by subject

Students moving from MYP 5 into DP1 generally arrive with good inquiry instincts and two specific weaknesses. The first is mathematical fluency: MYP assesses mathematics against criteria including real-life application, and it does not drill algebraic manipulation to automaticity. A student who reaches the Diploma unable to rearrange formulae without hesitation will feel Analysis and Approaches as a sudden difficulty rather than a gradual one.

The second is examination technique. Unless the school uses eAssessment, an MYP student may have had very little experience of timed external papers with mark schemes behind them. The Diploma is substantially externally examined, and command terms, working-out conventions and time management are all new skills rather than improved ones. This is the gap that most often produces a disappointing first DP1 report in a capable student.

On the other side, MYP students usually arrive better prepared than their peers for internal assessment work. Four years of criterion-referenced tasks, process journals and reflection means the Diploma's internal assessments and the Extended Essay feel familiar in structure, even where the content is harder. That is a genuine advantage and worth saying, because the transition is often described as uniformly difficult when it is actually uneven.

For tutoring, the implication is about timing and target. The useful purchase is in the spring and summer between MYP 5 and DP1, aimed at mathematical fluency and at what a timed paper requires. That is a short, well-defined window and a cheap intervention relative to rescuing a Higher Level subject in DP2. It is also the window almost nobody uses, because nothing is failing yet.

Verifying the person, and the regulator map

  • MoHRE private tuition work permit: free for two years, so ask about it directly
  • No official fine schedule exists; distrust any site quoting a penalty amount
  • Regulators differ by emirate: KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, RAK Department of Knowledge, MoE
  • IB Gram holds no regulator or IB accreditation and claims none

Private tutoring in the UAE requires a permit. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and u.ae states that it is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. Those tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws.

No schedule of fine amounts is published anywhere official, so this page quotes none and you should treat any figure you read elsewhere as unverified. The application route is MoHRE's own private tutor licensing service, which lists no fees and a two-working-day completion time through the smart app, website and e-services system. Because the permit is free, a tutor without one has saved nothing by skipping it.

Regulation of schools sits with the emirate. In Dubai the Knowledge and Human Development Authority is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education. In Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools. Sharjah's Private Education Authority and Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge regulate private education in those emirates, and the Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah.

A provider that calls itself KHDA approved is not offering a loose compliment; it is invoking a KHDA Educational Services Permit, which is issued to training institutes with premises in Dubai and requires annual renewal requested at least 30 days before expiry. IB Gram holds no such permit, holds no IB accreditation, and does not claim either. Ask every provider you consider the same question and compare the answers rather than the adjectives.

08

Starting from Dubai Festival City, and what we will not do

  • Send the four criterion marks; they are the diagnosis
  • Ask the school whether it enters students for MYP eAssessment
  • Free trial lesson, then a written note naming the weak criterion
  • No home visits in the UAE, no UAE office, no IB or regulator accreditation claimed

Send the subject, the MYP year, the four criterion marks from the most recent report, and one or two marked tasks if you have them. Those criterion marks are the single most useful thing a parent can supply, because the pattern across the four is the diagnosis. Add whether the school enters students for eAssessment, and the hour your child is genuinely at a desk after the bus from Al Mizhar or the queue out of Festival City.

We match a tutor to the subject group and run a free trial lesson as live one-to-one video on Gulf Standard Time, at no cost, with the task sheet, the rubric and the student's own work on a shared screen. Afterwards you receive a written note naming which criterion is costing the grade and what the repair looks like. For a good number of families that note is the whole value, and the engagement ends there. That is a success rather than a lost sale.

The limits, stated. IB Gram does not run home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India. There is no UAE office, centre or branch, and we claim none. We hold no IB or regulator accreditation. We do not supply MYP subject guides, task banks or assessment criteria documents as downloads, because reproducing them is not ours to do; your child's teacher holds the school's copy and that is the one to work from.

And on the projects, the boundary again, because it is the most-bent rule in this market. A tutor may question, explain criteria, model a comparable project on a different topic, read what the student has written and say where it falls short, and teach citation. A tutor may not contribute to the product, draft the report or write in the process journal. Ask any provider to put that in writing before money moves, and keep the reply.

Where we tutor

How thin MYP supply actually is nearby

These notes describe the local tutoring market rather than the neighbourhoods: who is realistically available for criterion-referenced MYP work, and where that runs out.

Al Badia

Closest to Deira International School, which runs the IB continuum, so local tutors here are the likeliest in the cluster to have encountered MYP criteria. That is a low bar and still the best local position available in eastern Dubai.

Festival Boulevard and Marsa Al Khaimah

Apartment communities with turnover that affects continuity. For MYP the continuity question is about the tutor knowing the student's criterion profile, which takes a few sessions to build and is lost entirely in a mid-year handover.

Nad Al Hamar

Long school runs put a visiting tutor in the evening window. MYP work often involves reading and discussing the student's own marked tasks, which survives a later hour better than mathematics does, so the evening slot is less costly here than in some subjects.

Mirdif

Uptown International School runs the IB continuum in Mirdif, so this is the one neighbouring community with a genuine local MYP presence. Supply is still thin relative to British-curriculum tutoring, which is simply a function of how small the IB cohort is.

Al Mizhar and Al Khawaneej

Low density, long bus routes, and almost no local MYP tutoring supply. Families here reach the online conclusion fastest and are usually right to, because the alternative is a generalist who has never seen a criterion descriptor.

Al Warqa and Al Rashidiya

Established housing with many tutors trained on British and Indian curricula. Capable teachers, and MYP criterion marking is genuinely unfamiliar territory for most of them, which is the specific risk this page is written to expose.

Dubai Silicon Oasis

Large British-curriculum provision nearby, which means plenty of IGCSE supply and very little MYP supply. A tutor who teaches Year 10 IGCSE well is not thereby equipped to read an MYP 4 criterion profile, and the two are frequently conflated.

Dubai International Academic City

University campuses nearby, which keeps the budget tutoring band supplied. Undergraduate tutors can help with content and homework supervision at MYP level, and are not the people to interpret a criterion-referenced report.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai Festival City

Dubai Festival City and Garhoud

Deira International School runs the IB continuum from the early years through MYP and into the Diploma, which makes it the main source of MYP tutoring requests in this immediate area. Universal American School offers the Diploma on an American spine, so its middle years are structured differently, and that distinction matters when matching a tutor.

Mirdif, Nad Al Sheba and the eastern suburbs

Uptown International School runs the IB continuum in Mirdif and GEMS Modern Academy at Nad Al Sheba is a long-established IB school. Between them these two account for most of the MYP requests along this corridor, and their Personal Project timelines are the dates that shape MYP 5 tutoring.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send the four criterion marks

Not the 1 to 7 grade, the four marks behind it. The pattern across them is the diagnosis: two high and two low means specific nameable weaknesses, while four middling marks usually points at written communication rather than at content. This single piece of information changes what should be bought.

  2. 02

    Ask the school about eAssessment

Does the school enter MYP 5 students for eAssessment and the MYP Certificate, or does it report internally? The answer reshapes the final year: with eAssessment there is on-screen examination technique to build, and without it there is not, so examination practice would be spending on an unassessed skill.

  3. 03

Use the free trial as a report-reading session

One live one-to-one video session at no cost in which the tutor reads the criterion profile and two marked tasks against the descriptors and names the weak strand. For many families this is the entire purchase, and we would rather it ended there than sell a term that is not needed.

  4. 04

Buy a criterion block, not a subject

Investigating patterns in mathematics, reflecting on impacts in sciences, thinking critically in individuals and societies: each is a teachable skill with a recognisable shape and a four to six session repair. Progress is visible on the next marked task, which makes the purchase testable rather than impressionistic.

  5. 05

Establish project habits early in MYP 5

The process journal routine in the first weeks, and a goal narrowed to something achievable and documentable. Those two things are worth more than any amount of help later, because a journal cannot be reconstructed convincingly at the end and a goal cannot be shrunk once the time is spent.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Criterion-first, not content-first

MYP marks four criteria on a 1 to 8 scale and converts the total to a 1 to 7 grade. Most lost marks sit in one or two criteria, so a plan that starts by naming the weak strand costs less and works better than a term of competent content coverage aimed at the wrong thing.

You get questions to test any tutor

Name the criteria, say what each is marked out of, explain the difference between the Community Project and the Personal Project, say what you would do with a process journal. Concrete questions with concrete answers, usable on us as readily as on anyone else.

Honest about how thin MYP supply is

IB enrolment was 7 per cent of Dubai's private school market in 2024-25, so the pool of people who have actually marked against MYP criteria is small, and smaller again within driving distance of Al Khawaneej. We say so rather than implying unlimited local coverage.

A written boundary on both projects

Questioning, criteria explanation, a comparable model on a different topic, and feedback on what the student has written. No product contribution, no drafting, no writing in the process journal. The project is declared as the student's own work and the consequence of anything else lands on them.

The transition gap named before it bites

MYP students usually arrive at DP1 strong on internal assessment and weak on algebraic fluency and timed examination technique. The cheap intervention is the spring and summer before DP1, which almost nobody uses because nothing has failed yet.

No borrowed authority

We explain what KHDA, ADEK, SPEA and the Ministry of Education each govern and claim accreditation from none of them, because IB Gram holds none. We do not supply IB documents as downloads, and we will not call a tutor an examiner without evidence.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai Festival City: your questions answered

What do the four letters on my child's MYP report in Dubai actually mean?+

They are the four criteria that every MYP subject is assessed against, each marked on a 1 to 8 scale. The school adds those marks and converts the total to the reported 1 to 7 grade using boundaries published in the subject guide, which your child's teacher holds. The pattern across the four is the useful information: two high and two low marks point to specific nameable weaknesses, while four middling marks usually indicate something broader, often written communication.

Why has content tutoring not moved my child's MYP science grade?+

Most likely because the lost marks sit in a criterion the tutoring never touched. MYP sciences separates knowing and understanding from inquiring and designing, from processing and evaluating, and from reflecting on the impacts of science. A student can improve their knowledge considerably and still score at the bottom of the reflecting criterion because they are writing nothing about impacts at all. Nobody had told them it was assessed, and one session usually fixes it permanently.

How do I test whether a Dubai Festival City tutor really knows MYP?+

Ask them to name the four criteria for your child's subject and say what each assesses. Ask what each criterion is marked out of and how a school converts those marks to the reported grade. Ask which criterion students in that subject most often lose bands on. A tutor who has marked MYP answers in sentences with specifics; one who has taught middle school generally answers about the subject instead, which is the distinction you are listening for.

Is there an MYP tutor near Al Badia or Mirdif who understands the criteria?+

Possibly, and the pool is genuinely small. IB enrolment was 7 per cent of Dubai's private school market in 2024-25, so the MYP teaching workforce is a thin slice of a large market, and applying a driving radius plus an available after-school hour reduces it further. Al Badia and Mirdif are the best-placed communities in this corridor because both sit near IB continuum schools. Elsewhere in the eastern suburbs, local supply for criterion-referenced work is sparse.

What is the difference between the Community Project and the Personal Project?+

The Community Project usually sits in MYP 3 or MYP 4 depending on the school and is linked to service in the community. The Personal Project runs through MYP 5, is the larger of the two, and is assessed against its own criteria covering planning, applying skills and reflecting, with a supervisor appointed at the school. Both depend heavily on documentation rather than on the visible outcome, which is the thing families most often discover too late to act on.

Can a tutor help my child with the MYP Personal Project?+

With questioning and feedback, yes; with producing it, never. A tutor may help narrow the goal to something achievable and documentable, explain each criterion, ask the questions a good supervisor would ask, model a comparable project on an unrelated topic, and read what the student has written and say where it falls short. A tutor may not contribute to the product, draft the report or write in the process journal. The project is declared as the student's own work.

Does a tutor visit homes in Nad Al Hamar for MYP lessons?+

No. IB Gram does not run home visits anywhere in the UAE; that service exists only in India. For MYP the online format suits the work particularly well, because the useful session involves reading the student's own marked task against the criterion descriptor. A shared screen puts the task sheet, the rubric and the attempt side by side at the same magnification for both people, which is awkward to arrange across a kitchen table.

My child is good at design but gets a middling MYP grade. Why?+

Because in MYP design the process documentation carries substantial weight alongside the solution itself. The criteria separate inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution and evaluating, so a strong final product with a thin design folder scores badly. Capable students find this genuinely unfair until it is explained. The repair is establishing folder habits early in a unit rather than reconstructing documentation afterwards, which cannot be done convincingly.

Does our school enter students for MYP eAssessment, and does it matter?+

Ask the school, because practice varies across Dubai and it reshapes the final year. Where eAssessment applies, MYP 5 gains an external on-screen examination element with moderated ePortfolios, leading to the IB MYP Certificate for students who meet the requirements, and examination technique becomes worth practising. Where it does not, MYP 5 remains criterion-referenced throughout and the Personal Project is the main set-piece, so examination practice would be spending on an unassessed skill.

What is the real gap between MYP 5 and DP1 for a Dubai student?+

Two things. Algebraic fluency, because MYP assesses mathematics against criteria including real-life application but does not drill manipulation to automaticity, so a student may reach the Diploma unable to rearrange formulae without hesitation. And timed examination technique, which MYP rarely requires unless the school uses eAssessment. On the other side, MYP students usually arrive unusually well prepared for internal assessment and reflective writing, which is a real advantage.

When should a Dubai Festival City family buy MYP tutoring?+

Earlier than most do, and in smaller amounts. MYP 1 to 3 is where criterion-referenced habits form and nothing is at stake in certificate terms, so a term aimed at how to write a reflection or a justification is a small purchase with a long return. The other high-value window is the spring and summer between MYP 5 and DP1, aimed at algebraic fluency and timed papers, which almost nobody uses because nothing has failed yet.

Why does my child lose marks in MYP maths despite good arithmetic?+

Almost always on the criterion covering investigating patterns, which asks the student to generalise a rule and justify it. That is a different activity from calculating accurately, and a student who has never been taught to write a justification will lose a band there consistently while getting the numbers right. The repair is short and specific: a four to six session block on generalising and justifying, using the student's own marked tasks as the material.

Do Arabic and Islamic Education affect an MYP timetable in Dubai?+

They occupy school timetable space, yes. KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students and a prohibition on combining the two groups. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. Support in these subjects works from the school's approved material, because using different or additional content requires prior Ministry permission.

Does an MYP tutor in the UAE need a licence?+

Yes. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and u.ae states it is granted free of charge for two years, covering registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Those tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, although no schedule of amounts is published. Since it costs nothing, ask the question directly.

What should one MYP tutoring session realistically achieve?+

Quite a lot, if it is spent reading rather than teaching. An hour going through the report and two or three marked tasks against the criterion descriptors will usually identify which strand is costing the grade and why. That is often the whole of what a family needs, and the student and the school can act on it without further paid lessons. Where more is needed, it should be a block aimed at that one criterion rather than general subject cover.

Read the criteria before you buy the lessons

The reason MYP tutoring disappoints so often in this part of Dubai is that the money gets aimed at the subject when the marks are being lost in a criterion. So send the four criterion marks from the last report, one or two marked tasks, and whether the school enters students for eAssessment. The free trial lesson costs nothing and can be used as a report-reading session, after which you will have a written note naming the weak strand in plain words. If that note is all you need, that is the right outcome.
