IB Physics Tutor in Deira

An IB physics tutor in Deira is usually wanted for one of three reasons: Paper 1B data questions are losing marks that the student can clearly do on paper, Theme D fields has stopped making sense, or the Scientific Investigation has no viable research question six weeks before the school deadline. Each of those is a different job. IB Gram matches Deira students to a Diploma Physics specialist and teaches live, one to one, over video, on Gulf Standard Time, starting with a free trial lesson so you hear the diagnosis before you commit to anything.

  • Live one-to-one video lessons timed to Gulf Standard Time
  • Paper 1A, Paper 1B and Paper 2 drilled as separate skills
  • Scientific Investigation coached against criteria A to D only
  • A free trial lesson before any block of sessions is agreed

IB & IGCSE in Deira

Physics is not one subject, and that is why tuition for it goes wrong

A Deira student who is struggling in IB Physics is almost never struggling with physics as a whole. They are struggling with a specific thing: resolving forces on an incline, the sign convention in a potential-energy problem, reading a gradient off a log-log plot, or writing a conclusion that compares a measured value to an accepted one with a percentage discrepancy rather than the word "close". A general science tutor will respond to "my child is weak in physics" by going back to the beginning. A Diploma Physics specialist will ask to see the last two tests and the mark scheme, and will usually find that the student can do four of the five things the paper asked.

That distinction matters more under the 2023 Physics guide than it did under the old one. The syllabus is now organised as five themes rather than a core-plus-options structure, and the examination has two papers instead of three. Paper 1 arrives in two halves that test genuinely different skills: Paper 1A is multiple choice, Paper 1B is data analysis and experimental method. Paper 2 is short and extended response. A student can be strong on 1A, where a good instinct and a formula sheet carry you a long way, and lose heavily on 1B, where you have to decide what to plot, work out an uncertainty and explain why a line does not pass through the origin. Those are separable skills and they need separable practice.

The other half of the grade problem sits outside the examination hall. The Scientific Investigation is 20% of the final mark, it is worth 24 marks across four criteria, and it is the single component where a Deira student has the most control and typically the least guidance. School physics departments in Dubai are stretched: a teacher running DP1 and DP2 Physics alongside MYP Sciences has limited time to read a twelve-page draft closely and tell a student that the research question is unanswerable with the equipment available. That conversation, early, is worth more marks than any amount of past-paper drilling.

Geography is the reason this page exists. Deira and the surrounding districts — Al Garhoud, Al Mamzar, Hor Al Anz, Al Muteena, Al Qusais, Al Nahda — have no shortage of capable tutors, but they have very few Diploma Physics HL specialists, and the ones who exist are booked by families within a short drive of them. A parent in Hor Al Anz looking for someone who has marked the Scientific Investigation is choosing from whoever happens to be local and free at 5pm, which is a small pool for a narrow subject. Teaching over live video removes the constraint entirely: the question becomes who knows the 2023 guide, not who can reach Al Muteena before Maghrib.

So this page is written from the subject outwards. It sets out the five themes and what each one actually demands, breaks the examination down component by component with weightings and durations, lists where marks are lost topic by topic, explains the four Scientific Investigation criteria and the mark allocation behind each, and states plainly what a tutor is permitted to do with a student's own investigation under IB academic-honesty rules. The cost section quotes what the Dubai market charges, with the source for each band, so you can judge whether a quote you have been given is reasonable.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics tuition for a Deira family almost always sits inside one of these programmes, and the right starting point depends on which one. The notes under each are specific to Dubai schools and to what KHDA requires alongside the international curriculum.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme Physics

Two years, taken at Standard or Higher Level. Content is organised into five themes: Space, time and motion; The particulate nature of matter; Wave behaviour; Fields; and Nuclear and quantum physics. HL students take additional content inside each theme rather than a separate options paper. Assessment is Paper 1 at 36%, Paper 2 at 44% and the Scientific Investigation at 20%.

Dubai DP cohorts are small by subject. A school with 90 Diploma students may run a single combined SL and HL Physics class, which means HL content gets taught to a room where half the students will never sit it. That is the most common structural reason a Deira HL student falls behind without anything being wrong with their ability, and it is fixable with one targeted session a week.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme Sciences

Physics appears inside integrated or discrete MYP Sciences and is assessed on four criteria — knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, reflecting on the impacts of science — each marked out of eight against published descriptors rather than a percentage.

The MYP-to-DP transition is the sharpest step in Dubai physics teaching. MYP criterion C rewards a student who processes data and evaluates it in their own words; Paper 1B rewards a student who can calculate an absolute uncertainty and propagate it. A Deira student arriving in DP1 from MYP5 usually needs six to eight weeks of explicit uncertainty and graphing work before the first DP test is a fair measure of them.

IGCSE Physics as the route in

Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Physics 4PH1 are the two syllabuses most Dubai British-curriculum schools run. Both split into core and extended or tiered papers, and both are the prerequisite most Dubai schools apply before admitting a student to DP Physics HL.

Several schools in and around Deira run IGCSE to 16 and then offer the Diploma, so a Year 11 student in Al Qusais may be preparing 0625 papers in June and starting the 2023 Physics guide in September. Bridging those two in one summer is a defined piece of work: vectors, algebraic rearrangement and uncertainty notation, not more content.

DPDP1 into DP2

Scientific Investigation supervision

The individual investigation is a single scientific report of up to 3,000 words, assessed on research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. It is 20% of the Physics grade at both levels and is marked internally against IB criteria, then moderated.

The equipment available in a Dubai school laboratory shapes what a viable research question looks like. A Deira student with access to a light gate and a ramp can do excellent work on energy loss; a student planning something that needs a vacuum pump cannot. Checking feasibility against the actual laboratory, before the research question is fixed, prevents the most expensive mistake in the component.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Physics is the reason you are on this page, but Deira families rarely need only one subject. These are the areas a Diploma Physics tutor is most often asked to cover alongside it, with what each one actually assesses.

Physics: Theme A — Space, time and motion

SL and HL

Kinematics, forces and momentum, work, energy and power, with rigid body mechanics and special relativity added at HL. Marks are lost on sign conventions, on treating momentum as a scalar, and on answers that quote a speed without stating the frame of reference.

Physics: Theme B — The particulate nature of matter

SL and HL

Thermal energy transfers, the greenhouse effect, the gas laws, current and circuits, with thermodynamics at HL. The recurring error is confusing temperature with internal energy, and circuit questions where students apply a formula before deciding whether components are in series or parallel.

Physics: Theme C — Wave behaviour

SL and HL

Simple harmonic motion, the wave model, wave phenomena, standing waves and resonance, and the Doppler effect. Standing-wave questions reward a student who can count nodes and relate length to wavelength; most marks go on diagrams drawn without labelling the fixed ends.

Physics: Theme D — Fields

SL and HL

Gravitational fields, electric and magnetic fields, motion in electromagnetic fields, with electromagnetic induction at HL. This is the theme Deira students most often name as the point things stopped working, usually because field strength and potential are being used interchangeably.

Physics: Theme E — Nuclear and quantum physics

SL and HL

Structure of the atom, radioactive decay, fission, fusion and stellar processes, with quantum physics and nuclear binding energy at HL. Mass defect calculations fail on unit conversion more often than on physics; practising in MeV rather than joules fixes most of it.

Physics: Tools and the data booklet

SL and HL

Experimental technique, uncertainty, graphing and the mathematics the course assumes. Not a theme, but examined throughout Paper 1B. A student who knows where every equation sits in the data booklet saves several minutes a paper, and minutes are marks in Paper 2.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The usual companion to Physics HL. Differentiation and integration carry directly into kinematics and induction, so weak calculus shows up as a physics problem. Students taking Applications and Interpretation alongside Physics HL need the algebraic work done deliberately.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Taken with Physics by most Deira students aiming at engineering or medicine. Shares the same Scientific Investigation structure and the same four assessment criteria, so investigation coaching transfers between the two subjects almost completely.

IGCSE Physics 0625 and 4PH1

Core, Extended and tiered

The feeder qualification. Paper structures differ between Cambridge and Edexcel, and so does the practical assessment route, so the first question for a Year 11 student in Deira is which syllabus code their school actually entered them for.

Computer Science and Design Technology

HL and SL

Both share the Diploma's internal-assessment rhythm and both are commonly paired with Physics in Dubai schools. A student juggling two internal assessments in the same term needs a plan, not two separate tutors working in isolation.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Deira families structure Diploma Physics support. All of them are delivered live over video, one to one, with the same tutor each week unless you ask to change.

Weekly one-to-one through the course

One session a week across DP1 and DP2, tracking the school's own teaching order rather than a generic sequence. The tutor works from the student's class notes and tests, so the lesson addresses what was taught this week and what the last test showed was not understood.

  • Session is set against the school's scheme of work, not a fixed syllabus order
  • Each lesson opens with a question from the previous week's content
  • Past-paper questions introduced from the first term, not saved for the end
  • Short written feedback after each session so you can see the pattern

Component-targeted blocks

A fixed block aimed at one weakness: Paper 1B data analysis, Theme D fields, or extended-response technique in Paper 2. Useful when the student is broadly fine but one component is consistently costing them a grade. Blocks are usually six to eight sessions.

  • Diagnostic first session against a real marked paper
  • One component drilled to completion rather than everything touched lightly
  • Mark-scheme language taught explicitly: state, describe, explain, deduce
  • Ends with a timed component under exam conditions and a mark breakdown

Scientific Investigation supervision

Structured sessions across the investigation: feasibility of the research question against the school's actual equipment, design of the method, data handling and uncertainty, then feedback on the student's own draft against the four published criteria. The student writes every word.

  • Research question tested for feasibility before any data is collected
  • Uncertainty and graphing taught on the student's own measurements
  • Feedback given as questions against criteria A to D, never as rewritten text
  • Academic-honesty boundary explained to the student in the first session

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Deira

01

What a Deira parent is really asking when they search for an IB Physics tutor

The honest answer to the search is that an IB physics tutor in Deira will be teaching your child over live video, not arriving at a building in Al Rigga. IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; home tutoring is a service offered only in India. That is stated here rather than buried, because the alternative is a parent discovering it after a phone call. What you get instead is a Diploma Physics specialist chosen from the whole of the matched tutor pool rather than from the handful who could reach Deira by car at 5pm on a Tuesday.

For a subject as narrow as Diploma Physics, that trade is heavily in a Deira family's favour. The pool of tutors who have taught the 2023 guide, marked a Scientific Investigation against the published criteria and seen enough Paper 1B scripts to know which uncertainty errors recur is not large anywhere in the world, and it is certainly not concentrated in one district of old Dubai. Searching locally for a rare specialism produces either a long wait or a compromise: a competent general science tutor who will do a reasonable job on Theme A and guess at Theme E.

There is also a practical argument that only applies to this part of Dubai. The distances between Deira, Al Qusais, Al Nahda and Al Mamzar are short, and the afternoon journey times between them are not. A tutor travelling from Al Garhoud to Hor Al Anz at 3:30pm is in the car for twenty-five minutes each way, and that hour is in the hourly rate whether it is itemised or not. On video the session starts at the agreed minute, the whiteboard history from last week is still there, and a cancelled lesson can be moved to the next evening rather than lost.

What should decide this is the diagnosis, not the format. Book the trial lesson, hand the tutor the last marked physics test and the mark scheme, and listen to what they say about it. A specialist will tell you which of the five themes is actually weak, whether the problem is physics or algebra, and whether Paper 1B is dragging the grade down independently of everything else. If that conversation is vague, the format of the lesson was never the issue.

02

The five themes of the 2023 IB Physics guide, and what each one demands

The current Physics guide, first taught in 2023, replaced the old core-and-options structure with five themes labelled A to E, taught to both Standard and Higher Level students with additional HL content sitting inside each theme rather than in a separate paper. Running underneath all five is a strand the guide calls the Tools of physics: experimental technique, the use of technology, and the mathematics the course assumes. That strand is not a theme you revise, but it is examined constantly, and it is where a surprising share of the lost marks sit.

The practical consequence for a Deira student is that there is no longer an options paper to carry a weak theme. Under the previous structure a student could be shaky on one area and rescue the grade elsewhere. Now the content of all five themes is examinable in both papers, so a persistent gap in Theme D shows up twice. It also means the sequence a school teaches in matters: a school that leaves Theme E until the final term is asking its students to learn mass-defect calculations during the period they should be practising whole papers.

Below is the theme structure with the HL additions named and the recurring loss point for each. It is worth reading alongside your child's own scheme of work, because the gap between what the guide contains and what has actually been taught by February of DP2 is the single most useful thing a parent can establish before booking anything.

One warning about resources. Plenty of material circulating online is still written against the pre-2023 syllabus, with Paper 3 and the old options in it. A student revising from a question bank built for the previous guide will spend time on content that is no longer assessed and miss the new emphasis on data analysis in Paper 1B. Checking that a tutor is working from the current guide is a reasonable thing to ask in a trial lesson.

Paper 1A, Paper 1B and Paper 2: the assessment structure component by component

IB Physics is examined in two papers at both levels, and the weightings are identical: Paper 1 carries 36% of the grade, Paper 2 carries 44%, and the Scientific Investigation carries the remaining 20%. The durations differ by level — Higher Level papers are longer because there is more content and the extended-response demand is greater — but the proportions do not. A parent who understands only that is already ahead of most, because it immediately tells you that Paper 2 is where the grade is decided and that the investigation is worth more than a fifth of everything.

The structure inside Paper 1 is where the useful detail lives. Paper 1A is multiple choice. Paper 1B is a set of data-analysis and experimental-method questions built around a given investigation. These reward completely different behaviours. Paper 1A rewards speed, elimination and a sound physical instinct; a student can often get there without a full calculation. Paper 1B rewards exactly the opposite: slow, careful work on uncertainties, gradients, what to plot against what, and whether a systematic error would shift an intercept or a slope. Students who are good at one are frequently poor at the other, and a school report that says "B in physics" hides that completely.

Paper 2 is short and extended response across all five themes. The failure mode here is almost never ignorance. It is command-term discipline and time. A question that says "deduce" is asking for a conclusion with reasoning attached; a student who writes a description gets the description marks and loses the rest. A question worth six marks needs six distinct scoring points, and students routinely make three points very well and then run out of time on the last question because the first one was over-answered. Timed practice with the mark scheme beside the script is the only thing that fixes this, and it is the work a tutor can supervise most usefully.

The table sets out the components with durations and weightings, and names the specific skill each one is testing. Use it to decide where the available tuition hours should go. A Deira student losing four marks a paper on Paper 1B is losing roughly a grade boundary's worth from a component that can be taught in six focused sessions, which is a far better return than another pass through Theme A.

Where IB Physics marks are actually lost, topic by topic

  • Command terms answered at the wrong depth, costing marks across every theme
  • Unit and prefix slips on questions the student fully understood
  • Absolute and percentage uncertainty used interchangeably in Paper 1B
  • Field strength and potential conflated throughout Theme D
  • Mechanics attempted without a free-body diagram
  • Time spent over-answering early questions, leaving the last one unattempted

Mark loss in Diploma Physics is remarkably consistent, and almost all of it is diagnosable from two marked papers. The pattern repeats across cohorts and across schools, which is why a specialist can be useful quickly: they are not discovering your child's weaknesses from scratch, they are checking which items from a known list apply. Below is the list as it recurs in Dubai cohorts, in rough order of how much it costs.

The largest single category is command terms. The Diploma uses a defined vocabulary — state, describe, explain, deduce, determine, outline, discuss — and each one specifies a depth of response. A student who answers every question with the same register will systematically under-answer the "explain" questions and over-answer the "state" ones, losing marks at one end and time at the other. This is learnable in a few sessions and it transfers across all five themes at once, which makes it the highest-yield thing to fix first.

Second is unit and prefix discipline. Kilojoules treated as joules, megaelectronvolts treated as electronvolts, centimetres entered into a formula expecting metres: these cost full marks on questions the student understood completely. The repair is mechanical. Every numerical answer gets a unit written before the number is calculated, and every value gets converted on the line it is written down rather than in the student's head.

Third is the uncertainty and graphing cluster that Paper 1B is built on: absolute versus percentage uncertainty, which quantity to plot to get a straight line, what a non-zero intercept implies, and the difference between a systematic and a random error. Fourth, and specific to Theme D, is the conflation of field strength with potential — one a vector measured in newtons per kilogram or newtons per coulomb, the other a scalar energy per unit mass or charge. Fifth is the habit of starting a mechanics question without a free-body diagram, which turns a two-mark resolution into a guess.

None of these are intelligence problems and none of them require a longer course. They require someone to read a marked script carefully, name the specific error, and then set practice that cannot be completed without correcting it. That is the entire method, and it is why the first session with a Deira student is spent on their own papers rather than on a lesson plan written in advance.

05

The Scientific Investigation: four criteria, 24 marks, and the honesty line

The individual Scientific Investigation is 20% of the Physics grade at both Standard and Higher Level. It is a single report of up to 3,000 words on an investigation the student designs and carries out, marked by the school against four published criteria and then moderated by the IB. Each criterion carries six marks, for 24 in total. The criteria are the whole of the specification for this component, and a student who has not read them is writing blind.

The most expensive failures happen before any data is collected. A research question that cannot be answered with the equipment actually available, or that has no measurable independent variable, caps every criterion that follows: the design cannot be strong, the data cannot be sufficient, and the conclusion cannot be supported. Thirty minutes spent testing feasibility against the school laboratory's real apparatus is worth more than a week of writing. This is the single most useful thing a tutor can do on this component, and it has to happen early.

Uncertainty is the second cluster. A physics investigation is expected to carry uncertainties through from the instrument to the final result, to show error bars where they are meaningful, and to say something defensible about whether the trend survives them. Students frequently report a gradient to five significant figures from data measured with a ruler, which signals to a moderator that the uncertainty work was not understood. Evaluation then asks for improvements that are specific and physical — a different sensor, a longer run, a controlled variable that was not controlled — rather than the generic "repeat more times".

Now the boundary, stated plainly because it matters more than anything else on this page. Under IB academic-honesty rules the investigation must be the student's own work. A tutor may teach the underlying physics, explain what a criterion is asking for, ask questions about a draft, point out that an uncertainty has not been propagated, and model the method on different data. A tutor may not write the report, rewrite sections of it, supply a research question to be submitted as the student's own, or edit a draft into its final form. IB Gram tutors work inside that line and tell the student where it is in the first session. Any service offering a completed investigation is exposing the student to a malpractice finding that can cost them the Diploma.

What physics tuition costs in Deira, and what the travel premium actually buys

Start with the gap rather than the headline rate, because that is the figure that decides the format. Published market rates in Dubai put an in-home one-to-one visit at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour — Bestimate's 2026 Dubai tutoring cost table gives AED 180 to 350, and independent home tutors advertise AED 200 to 500. A qualified subject tutor working online sits lower: Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. The difference between those two bands is not a difference in teaching. It is the car.

In the Deira cluster that premium buys something specific and fairly small. A tutor travelling from Al Garhoud to Hor Al Anz or from Al Qusais into Deira at 3:30pm spends somewhere around fifty minutes in traffic for a sixty-minute lesson. Somebody pays for that hour, and the only question is whether it appears on the invoice as a travel charge or is folded into a higher rate. It also buys a smaller choice of tutor, because the only people who can take the appointment are the ones already close by — which for a subject as narrow as Diploma Physics HL is a real constraint rather than a theoretical one.

The rest of the market sits either side. Budget online tuition, typically delivered by university students, runs from about AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik advertising from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. Specialist IB, IGCSE and A Level tutors run AED 200 to 450 and above; TutorChase publishes AED 270 and Bestimate puts the specialist band at AED 200 to 450 or more. At the top, named and examiner-led tutors are advertised at AED 500 to 650 and beyond, with BartyED quoting AED 650. Monthly packages seen in the market include about AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions.

Those are market figures with their sources named, not IB Gram's price list. What a Deira family should take from them is a sense of where a quote sits: a Diploma Physics HL specialist quoting AED 120 an hour is probably not a Diploma Physics HL specialist, and one quoting AED 600 is charging a premium you should be able to see the reason for. For IB Gram's own figure, the free trial lesson and the follow-up conversation are the route; the trial is one lesson and does not commit you to a block.

Working backwards from the examination session for a Deira physics student

  • Twelve months out: investigation research question tested against real apparatus
  • Nine months out: data collected; Paper 1B practised weekly, not saved for revision
  • Six months out: first full Paper 2 sat under timing, with a mark breakdown
  • Three months out: whole papers only, marked against the published scheme
  • Six weeks out: repair the error pattern in the student's own scripts
  • Ramadan: sessions move to post-Iftar rather than being cancelled

UAE schools sit the May Diploma session, so a DP2 physics student's year runs backwards from there, and the internal deadlines arrive long before the papers do. The Scientific Investigation is normally collected by the school in the first months of DP2, which means the data is gathered in DP1 or the autumn term at the latest. A family that starts thinking about physics support in the spring of DP2 has already passed the point where 20% of the grade could be influenced. Specific IB session and results dates are not published here; confirm them with your school's IB coordinator or on ibo.org, because they are the kind of date a parent acts on.

For IGCSE students in the same household the calendar is different and worth separating. Cambridge International runs its IGCSE, O Level and International A Level examinations in a June series and a November series, and Dubai candidates sit those two. Cambridge also allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for the zone, because it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after consulting the wrong one. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November; the November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, June 2026 results reached students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026.

Working backwards from a May session, the useful structure for physics is roughly this. Twelve months out, the investigation research question should be tested for feasibility. Nine months out, data collection should be finished and Paper 1B skills should be in regular practice rather than left to revision. Six months out, the first whole Paper 2 should have been sat under timing, because the time-allocation problem only appears at full length. Three months out, practice shifts from topic sets to whole papers marked against the published scheme. Six weeks out, the work is error-pattern repair on the student's own marked scripts, not new content.

Ramadan falls inside this run and reshapes the week rather than pausing it. Dubai school hours shorten, energy drops in the afternoon, and the productive window moves to late evening after Iftar. Deira families routinely move sessions to 9pm or later during Ramadan, which is straightforward for a video lesson and considerably harder for an appointment that depends on someone driving across the city. Planning the shift in advance rather than cancelling four weeks of sessions is what keeps the backwards schedule intact.

KHDA, the Dubai school market, and the mandatory subjects running alongside DP Physics

Dubai's private schools are overseen by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which u.ae describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Abu Dhabi and Al Ain fall under ADEK, Sharjah under the Sharjah Private Education Authority, Ras Al Khaimah under its Department of Knowledge, and Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah under the federal Ministry of Education. It is worth knowing which body applies to your child's school, because inspection reports and fee decisions come from there and nowhere else. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation or licence from KHDA or any other regulator, and nobody offering tuition should imply otherwise.

The scale of the market is relevant to why specialist supply is thin. Dubai's private sector served 387,441 students across 227 private schools in 2024-25, offering seventeen different curricula, with UK curriculum at 37% of enrolment, Indian at 26%, American at 14% and the International Baccalaureate at 7%. That last figure is the key one for this page: IB is a minority programme in a very large market, so Diploma Physics specialists are a minority within a minority. KHDA also confirmed in May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees for 2026-27 under Dubai's economic incentives package, and the 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools — four UK curriculum and three IB — creating 16,846 new places.

Running alongside whatever curriculum a Deira school is licensed for, KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools, with requirements to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. The rules are specific: schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, and KHDA advises that any mandatory-subject lesson should run at least 25 minutes.

For a physics student this is a timetable fact with real consequences. Those mandatory periods occupy space in a DP2 week that is already carrying six subjects, an Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and an internal assessment in every science. When a Deira family asks why their child cannot find time to practise Paper 1B, the answer is often visible on the timetable rather than in the student's attitude. A single scheduled session that is protected, short and specific tends to survive that week better than an open-ended plan to revise more.

Tutor permits, verification, and what a Deira parent can check themselves

Private tutoring in the UAE is a permitted activity, not an unregulated one. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, and u.ae states that it is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you.

The application route is MoHRE's own service, listed as Issuance of a New Work Permit — Private Tutor Licensing, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system, with no fee listed and a stated completion time of two working days. That is a short, free, two-day process, which is why a tutor's inability to discuss it is informative. A tuition operation with premises and staff in Dubai is a different legal animal and needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, with initial approval first and annual renewal requested at least thirty days before expiry.

There is one more rule a Deira parent should know, because it is occasionally offered as a selling point. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. This has been press-reported rather than read from the current policy document, so verify it against ADEK directly if it matters to your decision. Either way, "your child's own teacher, privately" is not something to seek out.

What you can verify yourself, in order: that the tutor holds the MoHRE private tuition permit and will say so; that they are working from the 2023 Physics guide rather than the previous one; that they can describe criteria A to D of the Scientific Investigation without looking them up; that they will send written feedback after each session; and that any examiner status claimed can be evidenced. Nobody should be describing themselves as approved by the IB, KHDA or Cambridge, because those approvals are specific things issued to specific entities and a private tutor does not hold them.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Deira

Deira sits inside a dense cluster of older Dubai districts where school catchments overlap heavily and the afternoon traffic between them is the real constraint on session timing. These are the areas Deira physics students actually come from.

Deira

The historic commercial core on the eastern side of the Creek. Mostly apartments, high residential density, and a school run that spreads students across Al Garhoud, Oud Metha and Al Qusais rather than into one local school.

Al Garhoud

Immediately south of Deira and home to several long-established schools. Close enough that a Deira student may be home by 3:15pm, which makes a 4pm physics session realistic on a weekday without cutting into evening homework.

Al Mamzar

Coastal, quieter, villa-heavy, and on the Sharjah side of Deira. Families here often have one parent commuting into Sharjah, so later evening sessions after 7pm are requested more here than anywhere else in the cluster.

Hor Al Anz

Dense apartment blocks between Deira and Al Qusais. Journeys that look short on a map take twenty-five minutes at 3pm, which is exactly the window an in-home tutor would need to absorb and charge for.

Al Muteena

Long-settled residential streets just inland from the Deira Corniche. Students here commonly attend Indian-curriculum schools and sit IGCSE or the Diploma as a second-stage choice, so programme-transition questions come up often.

Al Qusais

A large schooling district with British and Indian curriculum schools side by side. A Deira family with two children may be running to two different boards in Al Qusais, which is a scheduling problem before it is an academic one.

Al Nahda

On the Dubai-Sharjah boundary with a heavy commuter population. Border traffic makes fixed in-person appointments fragile here; a video lesson that starts on time regardless is the practical answer.

Oud Metha and Karama

Across the Creek but inside the same school catchment pattern, with several large schools and a strong Diploma presence. Many Deira students cross the Creek daily for school and come home into the evening peak.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Deira

Deira, Al Garhoud and Al Mamzar

The schools closest to Deira run a mix of British, Indian and IB programmes, and some offer IGCSE at 16 before a Diploma or A Level split. Students we support attend schools in this cluster; the names are here so you can see which syllabus codes and programme structures are in play locally.

  • Deira International School
  • Deira Private School
  • Al Mawakeb School, Al Garhoud
  • St Mary's Catholic High School, Oud Metha
  • Dubai Gem Private School
  • Al Ittihad Private School, Al Mamzar

Al Qusais, Al Nahda and Hor Al Anz

A dense band of schools serving Deira's northern and eastern edges, weighted towards British and Indian curricula. Several run Cambridge IGCSE at 16, which is why physics tuition requests from this cluster split between 0625 and the Diploma themes.

  • The Westminster School, Al Qusais
  • Dubai Scholars Private School
  • Universal American School, Al Qusais
  • The Millennium School, Al Qusais
  • GEMS Legacy School, Al Qusais

Named schools are listed as local ecosystem context only; no affiliation, endorsement or relationship with IB Gram is implied, and inspection outcomes should be read on the KHDA website rather than here.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the component, not just the subject

A short form or message naming the level, the themes already taught, and what the last marked paper looked like. "Physics HL, Theme D, Paper 1B losing four marks a paper" produces a better match in a day than "needs help with physics" does in a week.

  2. 02

We match a Diploma Physics specialist

The match is made on subject and level rather than on location, because the lesson is delivered over video. For HL students we look specifically for someone who has taught the 2023 guide and marked the Scientific Investigation against the published criteria.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson with the papers in hand

One lesson, no block committed. Send the last marked physics test and the mark scheme beforehand. The tutor spends the session diagnosing rather than teaching a prepared topic, and you get a specific account of what is actually costing marks.

  4. 04

Agree a schedule that survives a Deira week

Set the weekly slot against school hours, the Creek crossing and any Al Qusais or Oud Metha school run. Agree now what happens during Ramadan and in the examination term, so the plan does not quietly collapse in its third month.

  5. 05

    Weekly sessions with written feedback

Each session works from the student's current class content and their own marked work, with a short written note afterwards naming what was covered and what to practise. Over a term that note becomes the record of whether the error pattern is actually changing.

  6. 06

    Review against the backwards calendar

At each term boundary, check progress against the milestones: investigation feasibility, data collected, first timed Paper 2, whole papers under the published mark scheme. If a milestone has slipped, the plan changes rather than the hours increasing.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched on the subject, not on the postcode

Deira's local supply of Diploma Physics HL specialists is thin, and that is not a criticism of the district — it is true of any single district for a minority programme. Teaching over video means your child is matched against the whole available pool rather than the small part of it that can drive to Hor Al Anz.

Component-level diagnosis from the first lesson

The trial session is spent on the student's own marked papers, naming which of the five themes is weak, whether Paper 1B is dragging independently, and whether the problem is physics or algebra. A plan built on that is shorter and cheaper than a plan built on a general impression.

The academic-honesty line stated to the student

On the Scientific Investigation the tutor teaches, questions and gives criteria-based feedback on the student's own draft. They do not write it, rewrite it or supply the research question. The student hears that boundary in the first session, which protects the Diploma they are working towards.

Rates you can compare against named sources

The market bands on this page carry the provider that published them, so you can see where any quote sits rather than taking a number on trust. IB Gram's own figure comes after the trial lesson, in conversation, not as a price list invented for a landing page.

Scheduling built for an old-Dubai week

The Creek crossing, the Al Nahda border traffic and the Ramadan shift to post-Iftar sessions are planned for rather than discovered. A video lesson starts at the agreed minute and can move to the next evening when a school event lands on it.

No claim we do not hold

IB Gram is not approved, accredited or licensed by KHDA, ADEK, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and this page names regulators only to explain what they do. There is no UAE office, no guaranteed grade, and no statistic here without a source attached to it.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Deira: your questions answered

How many marks is each paper worth in the current IB Physics course?+

Paper 1 carries 36% of the grade, Paper 2 carries 44%, and the Scientific Investigation carries 20%. Those weightings are the same at Standard and Higher Level; what differs is paper length, with HL Paper 1 running two hours against SL's hour and a half, and HL Paper 2 running two and a half hours against SL's hour and a half. The practical reading is that Paper 2 decides the grade and the investigation is worth more than a fifth of it, so a revision plan weighted entirely towards multiple-choice practice is misallocated from the start.

What is the difference between Paper 1A and Paper 1B in IB Physics?+

Paper 1A is multiple choice and Paper 1B is data analysis and experimental method built around a given investigation. They sit inside the same paper and the same time allowance but they test opposite behaviours. Paper 1A rewards speed, elimination and physical instinct, often without a full calculation. Paper 1B rewards slow, careful work on uncertainties, gradients, choice of axes and whether an error is systematic or random. Students are frequently strong on one and weak on the other, and a single grade on a report card hides that completely.

My child in Deira understands physics in class but loses marks in tests. Why?+

That pattern usually points at command terms rather than content. The Diploma specifies response depth through words like state, describe, explain and deduce, and a student who answers everything at the same register under-answers the explain questions and over-answers the state ones. The second common cause is time allocation: three questions answered beautifully and the last one left blank. Both are visible immediately in a marked script and both are fixable in a handful of sessions, which is why the trial lesson is spent reading papers rather than teaching a topic.

Which IB Physics theme do Deira students struggle with most?+

Theme D, Fields, is named more often than any other, and the reason is usually one specific confusion rather than the whole theme. Field strength and potential get used interchangeably, when one is a vector measured in newtons per kilogram or newtons per coulomb and the other is a scalar energy per unit mass or charge. Once that separation is secure, gravitational and electric field questions stop being guesswork. Theme E runs a close second, but there the losses are mostly unit conversion in mass-defect calculations rather than the underlying nuclear physics.

Can a tutor help with the Physics Scientific Investigation without breaking IB rules?+

Yes, within a clear boundary. A tutor may teach the underlying physics, explain what each criterion asks for, question a draft, point out that an uncertainty has not been propagated, and demonstrate a method on different data. A tutor may not write or rewrite the report, supply a research question for the student to submit as their own, or edit a draft into its final form. The investigation must be the student's own work. Any service offering a completed investigation puts the student at risk of a malpractice finding that can cost them the Diploma.

How are the 24 marks split across the Physics investigation criteria?+

Four criteria, six marks each. Research design covers the research question, the justified methodology and the controlled variables. Data analysis covers recording, processing and presenting data with uncertainties. Conclusion asks for a result justified by the data and related to accepted physics. Evaluation asks for strengths, limitations and specific realistic improvements. The report runs to a maximum of 3,000 words. Reading those four criteria before choosing a research question is the cheapest marks available on the component, and most students read them after the data is already collected.

Does IB Gram send a physics tutor to our apartment in Deira?+

No. IB Gram does not provide home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; in-home tutoring is offered only in India. Lessons for Deira families are delivered live, one to one, over video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time. For Diploma Physics that is an advantage rather than a compromise: the match is made from the whole specialist pool instead of the few tutors who could reach Deira by car at 5pm, and no part of the hourly rate is paying for a journey across the Creek in afternoon traffic.

What does the in-home travel premium actually add to a physics tutor's rate in Dubai?+

Published market rates put in-home one-to-one tuition at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour, against AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor working online. Bestimate's 2026 Dubai table gives AED 180 to 350 for home visits and independent home tutors advertise AED 200 to 500; Unitors publishes online IB tuition from AED 200. The gap is travel time and a locally restricted tutor pool, not better teaching. In the Deira cluster a tutor can spend close to an hour in traffic for a one-hour lesson, and somebody pays for that hour.

How many physics sessions a week does a Deira DP student usually need?+

One well-targeted session a week is the normal starting point, and it is enough for most students through DP1. Two becomes reasonable in the months before the examination session, or when a student is carrying both a weak component and an unfinished investigation. More than two a week rarely helps, because the limiting factor is the practice the student does between lessons rather than the teaching hours themselves. The useful test after six weeks is whether the specific error pattern in the marked scripts has changed, not whether the student feels more confident.

Is it too late to start physics tuition in the final term before the exams?+

It is late for the investigation, because that work is normally collected by the school months earlier, and 20% of the grade is settled by then. It is not late for the papers. Six to eight weeks of focused work on command terms, timing and the specific error pattern in a student's own marked scripts changes paper performance measurably, because those are mechanical faults rather than knowledge gaps. What does not work in a final term is attempting to reteach all five themes, so a late start has to be ruthless about which component is losing the most.

Which exam sessions do physics students in Dubai actually sit?+

Dubai IB schools sit the May Diploma session. For IGCSE, Cambridge International runs June and November series, and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states it is essential to use the correct timetable version for the zone, as it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong one. Confirm specific IB dates with your school's coordinator or on ibo.org, and always work from the live official timetable rather than a restated date.

Do physics tutors working with Deira families need a UAE permit?+

Yes. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through MoHRE. u.ae states it is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Applications go through MoHRE's Private Tutor Licensing service, which lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time. Anyone tutoring without the permit is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published.

Why does my child's Deira school teach Arabic and Islamic Education alongside the Diploma?+

Because KHDA requires it. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with requirements to be implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Schools must run separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes are strictly prohibited. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. For a DP2 physics student those periods are a real constraint on the week, which is worth seeing on the timetable.

Can one tutor cover Physics and Maths AA for a student in Deira?+

Sometimes, and it is worth asking, because the overlap is genuine: differentiation and integration carry directly into kinematics and electromagnetic induction, so weak calculus often presents as a physics problem. A tutor comfortable with both can fix the cause rather than the symptom. The caution is depth. Physics HL and Maths AA HL are each demanding enough that a tutor claiming full command of both should be asked which they have actually taught to Higher Level and for how long, rather than taken on the claim.

How do Ramadan and shortened school hours affect a physics tuition plan?+

They move it rather than pause it. Dubai school hours shorten during Ramadan, afternoon energy drops, and the productive study window shifts to late evening after Iftar. Deira families routinely reschedule sessions to 9pm or later for the month, which a video lesson accommodates easily and an appointment depending on a cross-city drive does not. The mistake is cancelling four weeks outright, because in a DP2 year that is a month of the backwards calendar lost. Agreeing the Ramadan timing in advance keeps the schedule intact.

What should we send a physics tutor before the first lesson?+

Three things, and they are worth more than a long description. First, the last marked physics test or paper with the mark scheme, because the lost marks are the diagnosis. Second, the school's scheme of work or a note of which themes have been taught, so the session addresses what is current rather than a generic order. Third, the school's internal deadline for the Scientific Investigation. With those in hand a trial lesson produces a specific plan; without them it produces a pleasant conversation and a guess.

Start with one lesson and the last marked paper

If your child is in a Diploma Physics class in or around Deira and the grade is not moving, the useful next step is small. Send the last marked paper, the mark scheme and a note of which themes have been taught, and take the free trial lesson. One session with a Diploma Physics specialist and the evidence in front of them will tell you whether the problem is Theme D, Paper 1B technique, command terms or the Scientific Investigation — and those are four different plans with four different costs. The trial is one lesson and commits you to nothing. Lessons run live over video, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time.
