IB MYP Tutor in Deira

An IB MYP tutor in Deira has to work from the criteria, not from a textbook chapter. Every one of the eight MYP subject groups is marked against four lettered criteria, each scored out of eight, and a Deira household juggling three languages at home needs to know which letter is costing the grade. We teach that one-to-one over live video, in the hour after the Al Khaleej Road traffic settles.

IB & IGCSE in Deira

Your child is not being marked out of 100, and that changes everything

The single most common mistake a Deira parent makes with the Middle Years Programme is reading an MYP report as though it were a percentage. It is not. In every one of the eight MYP subject groups, a student is assessed against four criteria labelled A, B, C and D, and each criterion is scored on a band from 0 to 8. Those four scores are added to a maximum of 32, and the school then converts that total into a grade from 1 to 7 using published grade boundaries. A child can be strong on three criteria and weak on one and still come home with a 4. The report will not tell you which letter went wrong unless you ask, and most parents do not know there is a letter to ask about.

This is the whole case for a specialist IB MYP tutor in Deira rather than a general secondary tutor. A general tutor hears "my son is getting 5s in Sciences" and starts re-teaching cells and circuits. An MYP tutor asks for the four criterion scores, sees Criterion B at 3 and Criterion A at 7, and understands immediately that the problem is not knowledge of science at all. Criterion A is Knowing and understanding. Criterion B is Inquiring and designing. The student knows the content perfectly well and cannot write a method with a controlled variable in it. Re-teaching the content would have been eight wasted hours.

Deira adds a second layer that most of Dubai does not. The district's households are genuinely multilingual, and MYP Language acquisition is placed in one of six phases rather than by year group. A Grade 8 student in Deira might sit Arabic in Phase 2 and French in Phase 4, or arrive from a school in Kochi or Manila and be placed in a phase that does not match what they can actually do. Phase placement controls the command terms on the task, the length of the text they are expected to handle and the ceiling on what Criterion C and D can award. Getting the phase conversation right with the school is often worth more than a term of tuition.

We are an online tutoring platform, and for families in the UAE every lesson is delivered one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not run home visits anywhere in the UAE; that is a service we provide only in India. For MYP work this is not a compromise. A criterion-marked task is a document on a screen, and the useful hour is one where a tutor and a student look at the task-specific clarification side by side, annotate the student's own draft against each descriptor, and rewrite one paragraph together. That works better shared on a screen than read upside-down across a Karama dining table.

What follows is the detail a Deira parent actually needs: the four criteria for all eight subject groups in one table, how 32 raw marks become a grade, what the task-specific clarification document is and why it is the most under-used page in the programme, how the Personal Project is marked, what the market charges for MYP support in dirhams, and where the honesty line sits on a project a student must own themselves. There is no sign-up required to read any of it.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Deira families usually arrive at MYP tutoring from one of three directions: a child already in MYP 1-3 with uneven criterion scores, an MYP 5 student facing the Personal Project, or a family deciding whether MYP 5 or IGCSE is the better route into a Diploma.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Five years across eight subject groups: Language and literature, Language acquisition, Individuals and societies, Sciences, Mathematics, Arts, Physical and health education, and Design. Every group is assessed against four criteria scored 0-8. There is no externally set syllabus content list in the way IGCSE has one; the school builds units against the MYP framework, which is precisely why tutoring has to start from the unit planner and the task, not from a textbook.

Dubai schools running MYP are inspected by KHDA on the same six-band scale as every other private school in the emirate. A handful of Deira-adjacent schools run MYP as the middle-school phase before the Diploma; others run a British middle school and switch to IGCSE. Ask which your child's school does before assuming either.

MYP5Ages 15-16 · MYP 5

MYP Year 5 and the Personal Project

The final MYP year carries the Personal Project, which is assessed on three criteria - Planning, Applying skills, and Reflecting - each scored 0-8 for a total of 24. The project is supervised, not taught. Students keep a process journal, and the journal is the evidence base for Criterion A and Criterion C. Most lost marks in the Personal Project are journal marks, not product marks, and that is fixable in a handful of sessions if it is caught early enough.

In Deira the Personal Project season collides with the heaviest part of the Dubai social calendar and, in some years, with Ramadan. Families who schedule project supervision sessions for the first half of the MYP 5 year rather than the second consistently have a calmer spring.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

The two-year Diploma that MYP 5 feeds into: six subjects across six groups, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. The jump from criterion-referenced MYP marking to Diploma mark schemes with command terms and fixed weightings is the gap most MYP 5 students feel in their first DP1 term, especially in Mathematics and the sciences.

Several Dubai schools accept an MYP 5 student directly into DP1 without IGCSE. That route is legitimate, but it means the student has never sat a two-hour externally marked paper under exam conditions, and the first set of DP1 mocks is often a shock worth preparing for deliberately.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE as the alternative route

The British route many Deira schools take instead of MYP 4 and 5: externally examined subjects with published syllabus codes, graded 9-1 or A*-G depending on board. Content is specified; marking is on mark schemes rather than criteria. A student moving from MYP 3 into IGCSE Year 10 gains clarity and loses the inquiry-led assessment they are used to, and the first term usually needs explicit work on exam technique.

For UAE Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, five accredited IGCSE or GCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3 are required, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from that count. That rule is worth knowing before a subject is dropped in Year 10.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

MYP tutoring is organised by subject group rather than by named subject, because the criteria belong to the group. Below is what each group's four criteria actually reward, and the criterion a Deira student most often loses marks on.

Sciences

MYP 1-5

Criteria A Knowing and understanding, B Inquiring and designing, C Processing and evaluating, D Reflecting on the impacts of science. Criterion B is the usual weak point: students write a method without naming the independent, dependent and controlled variables, and the descriptor requires all three. Criterion D asks for the implications of the science, which is a different kind of writing altogether.

Mathematics

MYP 1-5, standard and extended

Criteria A Knowing and understanding, B Investigating patterns, C Communicating, D Applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Criterion B is where strong calculators collapse: it wants a pattern described, a general rule stated and the rule justified, and a correct answer without a general rule scores low. Criterion C penalises missing working and unlabelled diagrams.

Language and literature

MYP 1-5

Criteria A Analysing, B Organizing, C Producing text, D Using language. Criterion A is the hardest to fake: it asks for analysis of how the writer's choices create effect, not for what the text is about. Plot summary scores in the lowest band however fluent the writing. Criterion D covers register, grammar and vocabulary range.

Language acquisition

Phases 1 to 6

Criteria A Listening, B Reading, C Speaking, D Writing - four separate skills, each 0-8. Phase placement sets the difficulty of the text and the task. A Deira student placed too high loses marks on B and D for reasons that have nothing to do with effort. Arabic as an additional language is the most common case in this district.

Individuals and societies

MYP 1-5

Criteria A Knowing and understanding, B Investigating, C Communicating, D Thinking critically. Criterion D is the grade-mover: it wants sources evaluated for origin, purpose, value and limitation, and interpretations weighed against each other. Most students describe sources instead of evaluating them, which caps the criterion in the middle bands.

Design

MYP 1-5

Criteria A Inquiring and analysing, B Developing ideas, C Creating the solution, D Evaluating. This is the group parents most often dismiss and the one that most often drags a grade. The design cycle has to be documented: a research plan, a design brief, specifications written as testable criteria, and a test of the solution against those exact specifications.

Arts

Visual arts, music, drama · MYP 1-5

Criteria A Investigating, B Developing, C Creating or performing, D Evaluating. The process journal carries A, B and D, which means three of the four criteria are won or lost in a document most students treat as an afterthought. A technically accomplished final piece with a thin journal scores far lower than parents expect.

Physical and health education

MYP 1-5

Criteria A Knowing and understanding, B Planning for performance, C Applying and performing, D Reflecting and improving performance. Criteria A, B and D are written work: anatomy and physiology knowledge, a training plan with measurable goals, and reflection against those goals. A fit student can score poorly here, and often does.

Interdisciplinary units

All MYP years

Assessed on its own criteria - Evaluating, Synthesising and Reflecting - and reported separately from the eight subject groups. Students are asked to combine two disciplines to produce something neither could produce alone. The common failure is writing two parallel essays rather than one synthesised argument, which is a structural fix rather than a content one.

The Personal Project

MYP 5

Criteria A Planning, B Applying skills, C Reflecting - three criteria, 24 marks. The process journal is the evidence for A and C. The product is only one part of B. Students who build something impressive and journal nothing lose two-thirds of the available marks, and that is the single most predictable grade loss in the whole programme.

Service as action

MYP 1-5

Not graded on criteria, but required, recorded and reported. Schools expect documented reflection against learning outcomes. Tutoring here is limited to helping a student articulate what they actually learned rather than listing what they did, which is a short piece of work with a real effect on a report comment.

Approaches to learning

All MYP years

Five ATL skill categories - communication, social, self-management, research and thinking - taught through subject units rather than separately. Self-management and research are the two that show up as criterion losses elsewhere: a student who cannot cite a source loses Individuals and societies Criterion D marks for a reason nobody has told them about.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Deira families use MYP tuition. The right one depends on whether the problem is a single criterion, a whole subject group, or a project with a deadline attached.

Single-criterion repair

A short block aimed at one lettered criterion in one subject group - Sciences Criterion B, say, or Individuals and societies Criterion D. The tutor works from the student's own returned task and the task-specific clarification, rewrites one response together against the descriptor, then sets a second task to check the fix held. Short, cheap and the highest-yield use of MYP tuition there is.

  • Starts from a marked task the school has already returned
  • Two to four sessions is typical
  • Progress is checkable against the next school task
  • Delivered online, one-to-one, over live video

Weekly subject-group support

A standing hour each week in one subject group, following the school's unit planner rather than a tutor's own scheme of work. The tutor asks for the unit's statement of inquiry and key concept at the start of each unit, so the teaching matches what will actually be assessed. This suits students whose criterion scores are evenly low rather than spiky.

  • Same tutor, same hour, each week in Gulf Standard Time
  • Built around the school's current MYP unit
  • Covers all four criteria across the unit rather than one
  • Session notes after each lesson

Personal Project supervision support

Help with the process around an MYP 5 Personal Project: narrowing the goal so it is achievable, writing the success criteria, keeping a journal that evidences Criterion A and Criterion C, and planning the report. The student does the project and writes the report. A tutor coaches process, asks questions and gives feedback, and never produces any part of the submitted work.

  • Goal and success criteria sharpened in the first session
  • Journal reviewed against Criterion A and C descriptors
  • Report planned by the student, questioned by the tutor
  • Clear written boundary on what a tutor will not do

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Deira

01

All eight MYP subject groups and their four criteria, in one place

Every MYP subject group has exactly four assessment criteria, labelled A to D, and every criterion is marked 0 to 8. What changes between groups is what those letters mean, and no school hands parents a single sheet listing all thirty-two of them. That omission is why so much MYP tutoring in Dubai is aimed at the wrong thing. If you know only one fact from this page, make it this: ask your child's teacher which letter the marks were lost on, then look it up in the table below.

Read down the Criterion B column and a pattern appears. In Sciences it is Inquiring and designing. In Mathematics it is Investigating patterns. In Individuals and societies it is Investigating. In Design it is Developing ideas. Across half the programme, Criterion B is the criterion that asks a student to produce a plan or a line of inquiry rather than an answer. That is a single transferable skill, and a student weak on Criterion B in one group is very often weak on it in three. One tutor working on that skill can move several reported grades at once, which is the most efficient thing MYP tuition ever does.

Criterion D is the other recurring theme, and it is almost always the reflective or evaluative one: Reflecting on the impacts of science, Applying mathematics in real-life contexts, Thinking critically, Evaluating. Students who are confident and quick tend to score well on A and C and badly on D, because D rewards slowing down and weighing something. Students who are thoughtful but disorganised show the opposite shape. Either pattern is visible the moment you have the four numbers, and invisible if all you have is a grade from 1 to 7.

A practical note for Deira households with more than one child in MYP: the criteria are the same across year groups, so the vocabulary you learn for a Grade 7 student still applies to a Grade 10 one. The descriptors get harder, the letters do not change. That makes this table worth keeping.

How 32 raw marks become a grade from 1 to 7

  • Four criteria x 8 marks = 32 before boundary conversion
  • Best-fit and most-recent evidence, not a mean of every task
  • Not every criterion is assessed in every unit
  • eAssessment is a school-level choice - ask which route applies

Four criteria at 8 marks each gives a maximum of 32. The school then applies MYP grade boundaries to convert that total into a reported grade of 1 to 7. The conversion is not linear and it is not a percentage, which is why parents who do the arithmetic themselves get confused. A total in the low twenties out of 32 is a solid grade 5 or 6 in most conversions, not the 70 per cent that a percentage mindset would read as mediocre.

The second thing to understand is that a criterion is not marked once and averaged. Over a unit or a reporting period the teacher gathers several judgements on each criterion and applies a best-fit, most-recent-evidence approach rather than a mean. That has a direct consequence for tutoring: an early weak task is recoverable in a way an early low exam mark is not. If Criterion C was a 3 in September and a 6 in November, the November judgement is what counts. Starting tuition in the middle of a reporting period is therefore less wasteful in MYP than it would be in an examined course.

Third, not every criterion is assessed in every unit. A unit might assess Sciences A and C only, with B and D coming in the next unit. So a criterion that looks absent from a report is often just not yet assessed that period. Ask for the assessment map for the year if the school publishes one; it tells you when each letter is coming and lets you time a block of tuition to land before the task rather than after it.

For MYP 5 students whose school uses IB eAssessment, the final MYP Certificate grade comes from on-screen examinations and ePortfolios marked by the IB rather than from the school's own criterion judgements. Not every school opts in. The route your school uses changes the whole plan for the final year, and it is a one-question conversation with the MYP coordinator.

03

The task-specific clarification: the page that tells you the answer

  • Ask for the task sheet and the task-specific clarification, not the textbook
  • Highlight the command verbs in the target band before writing
  • Write a one-line plan that uses each verb once
  • Compare the plan against the clarification before any drafting starts

For every assessed MYP task, a teacher is expected to produce a task-specific clarification: the generic criterion descriptors rewritten in the language of that particular task. Where the generic Sciences Criterion B descriptor says the student "designs a logical, complete and safe method", the clarification for a specific investigation will say what a complete method looks like for that investigation. It is, in effect, the mark scheme written in advance and handed to the student.

Most students do not read it. A substantial share of the MYP tutoring hours bought in Dubai are spent explaining something the clarification already said. When a Deira family starts with us, the first request is always the same: send the task sheet and the clarification, not the textbook. Fifteen minutes reading those two documents with a student usually locates the problem precisely, and sometimes removes the need for most of the block that was about to be booked.

There is a useful exercise here that costs nothing. Before the student writes anything, have them highlight every verb in the clarification for the band they are aiming at - describe, explain, justify, evaluate, outline - and then write a one-line plan that uses each of those verbs once. The gap between what the student planned to write and what the clarification asked for is the grade, nearly every time. For a student who is strong on content and middling on marks, this single habit tends to move two criteria at once.

If a task comes home without a clarification, that is a fair thing to ask about. It is a normal part of MYP assessment practice, not an unusual request, and asking for it signals to the school that the household is reading the criteria rather than the grade.

04

Language acquisition phases, and the Deira household with three languages in it

MYP Language acquisition does not run by year group. It runs in six phases, and a student is placed in the phase that matches their current proficiency in that language regardless of age. Phases 1 and 2 are emergent, 3 and 4 are capable, 5 and 6 are proficient. A Grade 9 student can legitimately be in Phase 2 Arabic and Phase 5 French at the same time. The four criteria stay the same - Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing - but the texts, the task length and the expected register all scale with the phase.

This matters more in Deira than in most Dubai districts because the households here are genuinely multilingual, and because a child's home language is frequently not the language of instruction nor the additional language they are placed in. Three recurring situations: a student with strong conversational Arabic from the neighbourhood placed in a low phase and bored; a student with no Arabic at all placed by year group rather than by proficiency and drowning; and a student who moved mid-year from a school using a different phase scale and whose placement was never re-examined.

Placement is a school decision and we do not make it. What a tutor can usefully do is diagnose honestly. Give a student a Phase 3 reading task and a Phase 5 reading task in the same hour and the right phase becomes obvious very quickly. That evidence, written down, is a far better basis for a conversation with the MYP coordinator than a parent's impression, and the conversation is often worth more than the tuition that follows it.

There is also a KHDA layer sitting on top. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools whatever international curriculum the school is licensed for, and KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies - combined classes for both groups are prohibited because the curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ. For an MYP family, that means Arabic may appear twice in the week in two different forms, and it is worth being clear which one a report comment refers to.

The Personal Project, and why the journal is two-thirds of the mark

  • Three criteria, 24 marks: Planning, Applying skills, Reflecting
  • Sixteen of the 24 marks rest on the journal and the report
  • Success criteria must be testable, not aspirational
  • A tutor coaches process and gives feedback; the student produces every submitted word

The MYP Personal Project is assessed on three criteria - A Planning, B Applying skills, C Reflecting - each marked 0 to 8 for a total of 24. Read that again, because it is the fact that changes behaviour: only one of those three criteria is about the thing the student makes. Planning and Reflecting together are 16 of the 24 marks, and both are evidenced primarily through the process journal and the report.

The predictable failure is a student who spends four months building something genuinely impressive - a short film, an app, a community event - and keeps no usable record of how they did it. The product earns well on Criterion B and the other sixteen marks have almost nothing to point at. The reverse also happens: a modest product with a rigorous journal and honest reflection scores far better than parents expect, and students find that counter-intuitive until it is explained.

What a tutor can legitimately do here is narrow. We help a student sharpen a goal so it is specific enough to be achievable, write success criteria that can actually be tested rather than admired, set up a journal habit that takes ten minutes a week, and ask the questions that produce reflection rather than description. We do not choose the project, make any part of the product, write any part of the report, or edit a draft into a finished piece. The report must be the student's own work, and under IB academic honesty rules anything else puts the student at risk, not us.

Timing is the other lever. A Personal Project supported in the first term of MYP 5 costs a handful of sessions and runs calmly. The same project supported three weeks before the deadline costs more, achieves less, and pushes a tutor towards a line we will not cross. Deira families who book this early are consistently the ones who need the fewest hours.

06

MYP 5 into DP1: the three gaps that actually cause trouble

Most Deira MYP students are heading for the Diploma, and the transition has a reputation for being smooth because both are IB programmes. In practice three specific things bite, and all three are addressable in the final MYP term rather than discovered in the first DP1 report.

The first is examination stamina. MYP assessment is coursework-shaped: tasks, investigations, projects, with feedback cycles. The Diploma ends in externally marked papers written under timed conditions, and a student who has never written for ninety minutes without a break finds the first mock brutal regardless of how well they know the content. The fix is mechanical and unglamorous: timed practice, starting with thirty minutes.

The second is mathematics. MYP Mathematics is assessed on criteria that reward investigation and real-world application. Diploma Mathematics, in either Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, is assessed on papers that reward accurate algebraic manipulation and correct calculator use under time pressure. A student with strong Criterion B investigation marks and shaky algebraic fluency has a gap that is invisible in MYP reporting and very visible in DP1. Extended MYP Mathematics narrows it; standard MYP Mathematics into Higher Level Analysis and Approaches widens it considerably.

The third is command terms. The Diploma publishes a defined list of command terms per subject - state, describe, explain, analyse, evaluate, discuss - each with a specific expected response. MYP students are used to criterion descriptors, which are related but not the same vocabulary. Spending two sessions explicitly on command terms before DP1 starts is one of the cheapest interventions available, and it pays back across all six subjects rather than one.

What MYP tutoring costs around Deira, and what each band actually buys

Start with the cheapest thing in the market and work up, because that is the order a Deira household actually shops in. Platform tutoring with university-student tutors is advertised from around AED 33 to 52 an hour by Tutopiya and from AED 45 to 65 by EdFlik. At that level you are buying homework supervision and a second explanation of something a teacher already taught. For a student whose Criterion A is fine and whose Criterion B is a 3, that is not the purchase that helps.

The next band up is a qualified subject tutor working online, which Unitors publishes from AED 150 an hour for IGCSE and from AED 200 for IB. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table puts IB, IGCSE and A-Level specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above. In-home one-to-one visits, which include the tutor's travel, are quoted at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate and up to AED 500 by independent home tutors; TutorChase publishes AED 270, and BartyED sits at AED 650 for premium named tutors. Monthly packages seen across the market run from around AED 799 for eight online sessions to AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions.

What those figures mean for MYP specifically is a bit different from the examined courses, because the useful purchase is often small. A single-criterion repair block is two to four sessions. Personal Project process support, started early, is four to six. You are not usually buying a two-year programme. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session - AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market, AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year work - describe the recurring commitment, and most MYP families should be at the lower end of that range for a shorter period.

None of these are IB Gram prices and we do not publish a rate card on a landing page. They are what the market charges, taken from each provider's own published figures as read in October 2026, so that you can judge any quote you receive, including ours, against something real. Two things worth knowing before you pay anyone: ask whether the rate is per hour or per lesson, and ask what happens if you stop after one session. Those two answers separate the providers quickly.

The in-home question, answered honestly for a Deira flat

Parents in Deira search for a home tutor for sensible reasons. A flat is quieter to supervise than a drive across the creek, a younger sibling cannot be left alone, and a tutor in the room is visible in a way a tutor on a screen is not. Those are real arguments and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Here is the position stated plainly: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. Home visits are a service we provide only in India. For Deira, and for every other UAE address, lessons are one-to-one over live video. We say that before anyone pays rather than after, because two competitors in this market route UAE parents to overseas phone numbers without disclosing where the tutor actually sits.

The case for online in this specific district is not a cost argument, although the travel premium in the market data above is real. It is a supply argument. MYP is a minority curriculum in the Deira, Al Qusais and Al Nahda belt, and a specialist in MYP Design criteria or MYP 5 Personal Project supervision who happens to live within a twenty-minute drive of Al Muteena may simply not exist. Insisting on physical proximity narrows the pool to whoever is nearby, which for a niche MYP requirement often means accepting a generalist. Online removes the constraint and lets you pick on criterion expertise instead of on postcode.

The practical gains are smaller and still worth naming. A fixed hour that does not move because of traffic on Al Ittihad Road. A screen where the task sheet, the clarification and the student's draft sit side by side, annotated and saved. A recording or a set of notes a parent can read later. For criterion-marked work, which is almost entirely document work, these are not consolation prizes.

KHDA, mandatory UAE subjects, and the hours they take from the MYP week

  • KHDA oversees private education quality in Dubai; six inspection bands
  • 387,441 students across 227 private schools in 2024-25; IB is 7 per cent of enrolment
  • Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral studies are mandatory regardless of curriculum
  • Mandatory-subject time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, minimum advised 25 minutes

In Dubai, private schools are overseen by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. KHDA inspects on a six-band scale from Outstanding down to Very Weak. Dubai's private sector was 387,441 students across 227 schools in 2024-25, offering seventeen different curricula, with UK curriculum at 37 per cent of students, Indian at 26 per cent, US at 14 per cent and International Baccalaureate at 7 per cent. That last figure explains a lot about why MYP specialists are thin on the ground in a district like Deira: IB is a minority curriculum, and MYP is a subset of it.

The mandatory subject rules are the part that affects an MYP timetable directly. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral studies are required in all Dubai private schools whatever international curriculum the school is licensed for, and KHDA's requirements were to be implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided the total weekly time is met, and KHDA advises that any mandatory subject lesson should run at least 25 minutes. Schools must also ensure that all teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold the appropriate KHDA approval to teach those subjects.

Two consequences for planning. First, those lessons occupy real hours in a week that also has to carry eight MYP subject groups, and a student struggling across several criteria may be struggling with load rather than with any single subject. Looking at the actual timetable before booking tuition sometimes produces a better answer than tuition. Second, for the mandatory subjects the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is prohibited, which is a genuine constraint on how any tutoring in those subjects can be described.

One more thing on inspection bands, because Deira parents read them closely when choosing a school. A band describes a whole school across many measures. It does not tell you whether that school's MYP Design teaching is strong or whether its Language acquisition phase placement is careful. For those questions the useful source is other parents in the same year group, and the MYP coordinator.

Permits, honesty and the things we will not do

  • MoHRE private tuition work permit: free of charge, valid two years, Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • Applied for via the MoHRE smart app, website or e-services; two working days stated
  • No published fine schedule, so no figure should be quoted to you
  • IB Gram holds no regulator or examination-board accreditation and no UAE premises

Private tutoring in the UAE runs on a permit. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. MoHRE's own service page is titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, lists no fees, states a two-working-day completion time, and is applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you by anyone.

A Deira parent can therefore ask any prospective tutor a direct question - do you hold a MoHRE private tuition work permit - and the answer is checkable. One further point worth knowing: in Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct likewise bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Anyone offering you your child's own class teacher privately is offering something they should not.

On our own position, three statements. IB Gram is not approved, accredited, licensed or partnered by KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge International or Pearson, and anybody in this market claiming otherwise should be asked for a permit number. We hold no office, centre or branch in the UAE. And we do not publish a satisfaction percentage or a star rating, because we cannot produce the underlying data with a sample size and a method attached, and a number without those things is decoration.

The academic honesty line is the one that matters most in MYP, because the Personal Project is the obvious pressure point. A tutor teaches, questions, reviews and gives feedback on work the student has produced. A tutor does not write, co-write, edit to completion or produce any part of a Personal Project, an interdisciplinary task, a process journal or any other submitted assessment. We also do not supply IB, Cambridge or Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or subject guides as downloads; we cite them and link to the official source, because reproducing them is somebody else's copyright.

Where we tutor

Deira and the districts around it

Deira sits on the north side of Dubai Creek, and the practical question for a tutoring schedule is which crossing a family uses and when. Each neighbourhood below has its own afternoon shape, and the session time that works is different in each.

Deira

Dense, older and genuinely mixed. Flats rather than villas, which means a study space that is shared and an evening session that has to fit around other people in the room. Early-evening slots fill first here.

Al Mamzar

The quieter northern edge, close to the Sharjah boundary and to Al Ittihad Private School Al Mamzar. Families here often have a Sharjah-side commute in play, which pushes useful session times later into the evening.

Hor Al Anz

A short hop from Deira proper with heavy through-traffic in the late afternoon. Students here are overwhelmingly in Indian-curriculum or British-curriculum schools, with MYP households in the minority and specialist local tutors correspondingly scarce.

Al Muteena

Residential, walkable, and close enough to Deira's school cluster that a child may get home before four. That makes the 4.30pm slot realistic, which is unusual in this part of Dubai and worth claiming early in the term.

Al Garhoud

Across the creek side of the airport, home to Deira International School and Al Mawakeb Al Garhoud. Shorter school runs than most of old Dubai, and the most concentrated IB presence close to Deira.

Al Qusais

A large school cluster of its own - Westminster School, The Millennium School, Dubai Scholars - mostly British and Indian curricula. MYP families here are usually commuting out of the district to reach an IB school.

Al Nahda

Straddling the Dubai-Sharjah line, with the longest and least predictable afternoon commute in this set. Online sessions here are not a convenience argument; they are the only way to protect a fixed weekly hour.

Bur Dubai and Karama

The other side of the creek, reachable in fifteen minutes or fifty depending on the hour. Many Deira MYP students have siblings at schools here, which is why one shared device and a staggered schedule comes up so often.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Deira

Deira, Al Garhoud and Al Mamzar

The closest cluster to a Deira address, and the one holding most of the IB provision in this part of Dubai. A student in MYP here is typically at an IB continuum school; a student at a British school nearby will be heading for IGCSE instead, and the tutoring brief is completely different.

  • Deira International School
  • Al Ittihad Private School, Al Mamzar
  • Al Mawakeb School, Al Garhoud
  • The Indian Academy, Dubai
  • Dubai Scholars Private School

Al Qusais and Al Nahda

A dense British and Indian curriculum belt where MYP is the exception rather than the rule. Families from these neighbourhoods often drive across to an IB school, which is exactly the households for whom a fixed online hour is worth more than a nearby tutor.

  • Westminster School, Dubai
  • The Millennium School, Dubai
  • GEMS Legacy School
  • New Indian Model School, Dubai

Oud Metha and Bur Dubai, across the creek

The nearest large school cluster on the south side, and where many Deira families have a second child enrolled. Useful context when planning a household timetable rather than a single student's hour.

  • The Indian High School, Dubai
  • St Mary's Catholic High School
  • Dubai Gem Private School
  • Ambassador School, Al Mankhool

Schools are named here as the educational context of this district only; IB Gram has no affiliation with, endorsement from, or commercial relationship with any school listed.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the task, not the textbook

Share the marked MYP task, the task-specific clarification and the four criterion scores if you have them. Fifteen minutes with those three documents locates the problem more precisely than an hour of conversation. If the clarification was not sent home, ask the school for it - it is a normal request.

  2. 02

    A free trial lesson, criterion-first

One session at no cost, with the tutor you would continue with. The hour is spent diagnosing which lettered criterion is costing the grade and showing the student what the descriptor actually asks for. You get a written note of what was found, whether or not you book anything further.

  3. 03

Agree a short block, not a year

Most MYP problems are two to six sessions. We say so, and we would rather you bought four sessions that fix Criterion B than a standing year that fixes nothing in particular. Weekly support makes sense when criterion scores are evenly low across a subject group.

  4. 04

Fix the hour to the Deira afternoon

Pick a slot that survives the real commute from your child's school, not an optimistic one. Families in Al Muteena and Al Garhoud can often hold 4.30pm; Al Nahda and Al Mamzar households are usually better served after six. The hour is in Gulf Standard Time and does not move for traffic.

  5. 05

Check it against the next school task

The test of MYP tutoring is the next criterion judgement from the school, not the tutor's opinion. We tell you which criterion we worked on and what to look for on the next returned task. If it did not move, say so and we will change the tutor or the approach.

  6. 06

    Stop when it is fixed

A criterion repair block ends. If the MYP 5 Personal Project is coming, that is a separate short piece of work with its own timing, best started in the first term. Nobody here benefits from an open-ended booking that nobody is measuring.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We start from the criterion, not the topic

The first question is which lettered criterion lost the marks. For a Deira family who has only ever seen a grade from 1 to 7, that reframing alone often changes what they buy. Re-teaching content when Criterion B is the problem is the most common waste of money in MYP tutoring.

All eight subject groups, including the ones parents dismiss

Design and Physical and health education are criterion-marked written subjects for three of their four criteria, and they drag reported grades more often than families expect. We cover the groups that general tutors do not touch, because a 3 in Design Criterion A costs exactly as much as a 3 in Sciences.

Honest about where the tutor sits

Every UAE lesson is online, one-to-one, over live video, and we say it before payment. IB Gram does not run home visits in the UAE. Two providers in this market route UAE parents to overseas numbers without disclosing delivery; we would rather lose the booking than do that.

A hard line on assessed work

We coach the process on a Personal Project and we do not produce any part of it. That is a boundary, written down, and it protects the student: under IB academic honesty rules the consequence of crossing it falls on them. One competitor in this SERP sells completed Internal Assessments outright.

Figures attributed, or not published

Every AED range on this page carries the provider who published it and the month it was read. We publish no satisfaction percentage, no star rating and no tutor headcount, because we cannot attach a sample size and a method to any of them.

A schedule built for this side of the creek

Session times are set against the actual Deira and Al Nahda afternoon rather than a generic 4pm slot. A fixed hour that holds every week is worth more over a term than a nominally convenient one that moves twice a month.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Deira: your questions answered

What exactly do the four MYP criteria mean in my child's subject?+

Every MYP subject group has four criteria labelled A to D, each marked 0 to 8, but the letters mean different things in different groups. In Sciences they are Knowing and understanding, Inquiring and designing, Processing and evaluating, and Reflecting on the impacts of science. In Mathematics they are Knowing and understanding, Investigating patterns, Communicating, and Applying mathematics in real-life contexts. The table earlier on this page lists all eight groups. Ask your child's teacher which letter the marks were lost on; that single answer usually redirects the tutoring entirely.

Why does my child's MYP report show a 5 when they get most answers right?+

Because MYP is criterion-referenced, not percentage-based. Four criteria at 8 marks each give a total out of 32, which the school converts to a grade from 1 to 7 using published boundaries. Getting answers right mostly feeds Criterion A, Knowing and understanding. The other three criteria reward method design, communication and evaluation, and a student can be excellent on content and weak on all three. Ask for the four separate criterion scores. The shape of those four numbers tells you what to work on; the grade does not.

What is a task-specific clarification and should we have been given one?+

It is the generic criterion descriptors rewritten in the language of a particular task, which makes it effectively the mark scheme handed out in advance. Producing one is normal MYP assessment practice. If a marked task came home without it, asking the school is a reasonable request rather than a complaint. Reading it with your child before they write is the highest-value fifteen minutes available in the whole programme, and in our experience a good share of booked MYP tutoring hours are spent explaining something the clarification already said plainly.

How are the MYP language acquisition phases decided for a child in Deira?+

By proficiency in that language, not by year group. There are six phases: 1 and 2 emergent, 3 and 4 capable, 5 and 6 proficient. A student can sit in Phase 2 for one language and Phase 5 for another at the same time. Placement is the school's decision. What a tutor can do is diagnose honestly by setting tasks from two different phases in one session, which produces written evidence you can take to the MYP coordinator. In multilingual Deira households, a misplacement is a common and fixable cause of low Reading and Writing scores.

Can a tutor help with the MYP Personal Project without crossing the honesty line?+

Yes, within clear limits. The Personal Project is marked on three criteria - Planning, Applying skills, Reflecting - worth 24 marks, and sixteen of those rest on the process journal and the report. A tutor can help narrow the goal, write testable success criteria, build a journal habit and ask the questions that produce genuine reflection. A tutor cannot choose the project, make any part of the product, write or edit any part of the report. Crossing that line is an IB academic honesty breach, and the consequence lands on the student.

Is the MYP harder than IGCSE for a student in Dubai?+

They are hard in different ways, which is why the comparison rarely helps. IGCSE specifies content and examines it externally, so a student knows what to learn and has to perform on the day. MYP specifies skills through criteria and assesses them continuously, so a student has to understand how they are being judged across eight subject groups at once. Organised students who dislike exams often prefer MYP. Students who learn content readily but struggle with sustained coursework usually find IGCSE a cleaner fit. Your child's school decides which route it runs.

My child is in MYP 5 and going into DP1 next year. What should we fix now?+

Three things, in this order. Examination stamina, because MYP assessment is coursework-shaped and the Diploma ends in timed papers - start at thirty minutes and build. Algebraic fluency, because MYP Mathematics rewards investigation while Diploma Mathematics rewards accurate manipulation under time pressure, and that gap is invisible on an MYP report. And command terms, because the Diploma publishes a defined list per subject with specific expected responses. Two sessions on command terms before DP1 begins pays back across all six subjects rather than one.

How many sessions does MYP tutoring usually take to show something?+

Less than families expect. A single-criterion repair - Sciences Criterion B, say - is typically two to four sessions, because the student usually already knows the content and has never read the descriptor. Personal Project process support started in the first term of MYP 5 is four to six. Weekly standing support makes sense only when criterion scores are evenly low across a whole subject group rather than spiky. We would rather sell you four sessions that move one criterion than a year that moves nothing measurable.

What does MYP tutoring cost in Dubai, and how do I judge a quote?+

Market rates read in October 2026: Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 at the budget end; Unitors publishes from AED 200 for IB; Bestimate's Dubai rate table puts specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above and in-home visits at AED 180 to 350; BartyED sits at AED 650. Those are the market, not our prices. When you get a quote, ask two questions: is the rate per hour or per lesson, and what happens if we stop after one session. The answers separate providers fast.

Do you send an MYP tutor to our flat in Deira?+

No. IB Gram does not provide home visits anywhere in the UAE; that is a service we offer only in India. Every UAE lesson is one-to-one over live video, and we state that before you pay rather than after. For criterion-marked work the online format is genuinely better suited: the task sheet, the clarification and the student's own draft sit side by side on a shared screen, get annotated together and can be revisited. The real argument, though, is supply - an MYP Design or Personal Project specialist within a twenty-minute drive of Deira may not exist.

Does my child have to take Arabic alongside the MYP in a Dubai school?+

Yes. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the international curriculum the school is licensed for, under KHDA requirements implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. KHDA also requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Note that this mandatory Arabic is a different thing from MYP Language acquisition Arabic, and report comments can refer to either.

Does every MYP 5 student sit IB eAssessment?+

No - it is a school-level choice. Where a school opts in, the final MYP Certificate grade comes from on-screen examinations and ePortfolios marked by the IB rather than from the school's own criterion judgements, which changes the whole plan for the final year. Where a school does not, the MYP record is school-assessed against the criteria. This is a one-question conversation with your MYP coordinator and it should happen before the final year starts, because the two routes need different preparation and different timing for any tuition.

Does an MYP tutor working with a Deira family need a UAE permit?+

Yes. Private tutoring in the UAE requires the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through its smart app, website or e-services. Anyone tutoring without a permit is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no figure should be quoted.

Why is Design dragging my child's MYP grades when the project looked good?+

Because three of Design's four criteria are documentation rather than making. Criterion A is Inquiring and analysing, B is Developing ideas, C is Creating the solution and D is Evaluating. The design cycle has to be evidenced: a research plan, a design brief, specifications written so they can actually be tested, and a test of the finished solution against those exact specifications. A beautiful outcome with no documented specification scores badly on A, B and D. This is one of the quickest MYP fixes available and usually needs two or three sessions.

Can one tutor cover several MYP subject groups for the same student?+

Sometimes, and it depends on whether the problem is content or criterion. If a student is weak on Criterion B across Sciences, Mathematics and Individuals and societies, that is one transferable skill - producing a plan or line of inquiry rather than an answer - and a single tutor working on it can move several reported grades. If the problem is subject content in two unrelated groups, you want two specialists. We will tell you which case you are in during the free trial rather than selling the convenient answer.

We are moving to Deira mid-year from an IB school abroad. What should we check first?+

Three things in the first fortnight. Language acquisition phase placement, because a transfer is usually placed by default rather than by assessment and the wrong phase caps Reading and Writing marks for reasons unrelated to effort. The school's assessment map, so you know which criteria are being assessed in the current reporting period and can time any tuition to land before the task. And whether the school runs MYP eAssessment in the final year. All three are questions for the MYP coordinator, and none of them cost anything.

Start with the four numbers, then decide

If you take one thing from this page, make it the question: which lettered criterion lost the marks? Ask your child's teacher, get the four scores out of 8, and the right tutoring decision usually becomes obvious - often a short block rather than a standing commitment. If you want help reading them, book the free trial lesson. One hour, the tutor you would continue with, spent on the marked task and the task-specific clarification, and a written note of what was found whether or not you book anything else. Lessons for Deira families are one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time around the real afternoon commute.
