IB & IGCSE in Deira

The comparison that decides what a tutor should teach

Parents in Deira ask for an IGCSE science tutor and are usually surprised to be asked which science and which award. It is not pedantry. A student entered for Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences sits a different syllabus from one entered for Physics, Chemistry and Biology separately, with narrower content and a different set of papers, and a tutor revising separate-science material with a Co-ordinated candidate will spend weeks on topics that will never appear. That error is common, expensive and entirely preventable by one question to the school.

There are three entry patterns in Dubai schools. The separate sciences, where a student takes Physics, Chemistry and Biology as three qualifications with three sets of papers — Cambridge codes 0625, 0620 and 0610, or Pearson 4PH1, 4CH1 and 4BI1. The double award, where all three sciences are covered in one qualification worth two grades, which is Cambridge 0654 Co-ordinated Sciences or Pearson's double award equivalent. And the single combined award, Cambridge 0653, covering all three in one qualification worth one grade. Larger schools, including several in the Al Qusais cluster near Deira, run two of these patterns side by side in the same year group.

The second comparison is practical assessment, which differs by board as well as by award. Cambridge sciences carry a separate practical component, sat either as a practical test or as an alternative-to-practical written paper, and which of the two a school enters for is a school decision a parent can simply ask about. Pearson assesses practical skills within the written papers rather than through a separate component. Revision material for one is not revision material for the other, and the alternative-to-practical paper in particular has a question style that repeats across series and is therefore unusually learnable.

The third comparison is consequence. Three separate sciences keeps the widest set of post-16 options open, including A Level or Diploma sciences in all three subjects. A double award keeps most of them open. A single combined award narrows them, and a family should know that before Year 10 rather than after results. For Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track the requirement is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic education, so how the sciences count towards that five is worth establishing with the school.

IB Gram delivers all UAE tuition online, one-to-one, over live video with a shared whiteboard. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. For science there is an honest limit worth stating at the outset: we teach theory, calculations, written explanation and data analysis, and we cannot handle apparatus for your child. Laboratory work belongs to the school. What tutoring adds is making a student's practical experience earn marks on paper.

Separate sciences

Physics, Chemistry and Biology as three qualifications with three grades. Cambridge codes 0625, 0620 and 0610; Pearson 4PH1, 4CH1 and 4BI1. The fullest content in each subject, three sets of papers, and three practical components where the board requires one.

This is the pattern for students aiming at medicine, engineering or any science-heavy post-16 route, and it occupies three timetable blocks rather than two. In a Dubai week that already carries mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and social studies lessons, it is a real workload decision.

0654Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences, double award

All three sciences in one syllabus producing two grades. Content is narrower than the separate sciences in each discipline while the standard of written explanation expected is the same. Tiered into Core and Extended like the separate subjects.

Common in larger Dubai schools where students take nine or ten subjects, because it delivers two science grades in two timetable blocks rather than three. The commonest tutoring error in this part of Dubai is revising separate-science material for a 0654 candidate.

0653Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge Combined Science, single award

All three sciences in one syllabus producing one grade, with the narrowest content of the three patterns. It satisfies a science requirement and is the lightest option in a crowded timetable.

Suitable where a student's post-16 plans do not involve science, and limiting where they might. If there is any chance of an A Level or Diploma science, raise this with the school in Year 9 or early Year 10, because the entry is difficult to change later.

4SD0Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson double award science

Pearson's combined route covering all three sciences for two grades, with practical skills assessed within the written papers rather than through a separate practical component. Question style tends towards fewer, longer items than the Cambridge equivalent.

Where a Deira school runs Pearson, ask whether the science entry is the double award or the separate 4PH1, 4CH1 and 4BI1 codes, since both exist in the city and the papers differ in length and distribution.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below are the content areas across the three sciences, with a note on what each demands in writing. Which of them are on your child's paper depends entirely on the award code, which is why that comes first.

Physics: electricity and circuits

All awards; deeper in 0625 and 4PH1

Current, potential difference, resistance, series and parallel circuits and electrical power. The topic with the widest gap between confidence and marks, because students can recite relationships and then cannot reason about what happens to the rest of a circuit when one component changes.

Physics: forces, motion and energy

All awards

Speed, acceleration, graphs of motion, Newton's laws, moments, work, power and energy transfers. Graph interpretation carries real marks: students read values correctly and fail to say what a gradient or an area under a line represents.

Physics: waves, thermal and magnetism

All awards; more in the separate entry

Reflection, refraction, the electromagnetic spectrum, specific heat capacity and electromagnetic induction. Explanation questions here reward a sequence of cause and effect, and students who write a definition instead of a mechanism lose the marks.

Chemistry: moles and quantitative work

Extended and Higher tiers particularly

Relative masses, the mole, reacting masses, concentration and titration calculations. Marks go missing on units and rounding rather than on chemistry, and on answers given without working that would otherwise have earned method credit.

Chemistry: bonding, structure and the periodic table

All awards

Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding, giant structures and periodic trends. The written failure is naming a general force rather than the specific interaction, and giving a trend without the reason the mark scheme wants alongside it.

Chemistry: acids, redox, electrolysis and organic

All awards; organic deeper in the separate entry

Acid reactions, oxidation and reduction, electrolysis products and the basics of organic families. Electrolysis questions require products at both electrodes with a reason, and half-equations where the tier demands them.

Biology: cells, transport and enzymes

All awards

Cell structure, diffusion, osmosis, active transport and enzyme action. Osmosis questions are a reliable mark loss because students describe water moving to where there is more of something rather than using water potential language correctly.

Biology: human physiology and plant processes

All awards

Digestion, circulation, breathing, excretion, photosynthesis and transpiration. Content-heavy and highly improvable in a short block, because the marks sit in using the exact term the scheme requires rather than in conceptual understanding.

Biology: inheritance, variation and ecology

All awards

Genetic crosses, variation, natural selection, food webs and nutrient cycles. Genetic cross questions reward a correctly laid out diagram with gametes shown, and students who work it mentally lose the method marks.

Practical and data-handling skills

All awards, assessed differently by board

Variables, apparatus selection, tabulation, graph plotting, anomalies and sources of error. In Cambridge this is a separate component sat as a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper; in Pearson it is assessed inside the written papers. Either way the question types repeat across series and are learnable.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, compared on what each can do for a science student. All lessons are online, one-to-one, over live video with a shared whiteboard both people write on.

One science at a time, weekly

A single protected weekly slot in whichever science is weakest, carried across a term. Compared with rotating between three, it produces one measurable grade change rather than three shallow improvements, and it fits a Dubai week that cannot absorb three sessions.

  • One science, chosen from marked work
  • Follows the school's scheme of work for that award
  • Written answers marked against the scheme
  • Reviewed at the next school assessment

Practical-skills block

Three or four sessions on variables, tabulation, graph plotting, anomalies and sources of error, aimed at the Cambridge practical component or at the practical questions inside Pearson papers. Compared with content teaching, it is narrower, cheaper and more reliably effective, because the question types repeat.

  • Targets the practical test or alternative-to-practical paper
  • Works entirely on paper and on supplied data
  • Question types drilled across several series
  • Cannot and does not replace school laboratory work

Weekend timed-paper session

Friday or Saturday morning, sitting a complete paper on the correct award code to time and marking it together. Compared with a weekday session, it is the only slot long enough, and in an apartment it is often the only genuinely quiet academic hour of the week.

  • Full paper, correct code and tier, to time
  • Marked question by question against the scheme
  • Fortnightly is usually sufficient
  • Produces the evidence the weekday session acts on

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Deira

01

Separate sciences, double award or single award

This is the comparison that determines what a tutor should be teaching, and the one families most often cannot answer. Three entry patterns exist in Dubai schools and they are genuinely different qualifications rather than three difficulty settings of one.

The separate sciences give three grades from three syllabuses with the fullest content in each discipline, and occupy three timetable blocks. Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences, code 0654, gives two grades from one syllabus covering all three sciences with narrower content in each, in two timetable blocks. Cambridge Combined Science, 0653, gives one grade from the narrowest content of all. Pearson's double award equivalent works like 0654 in structure while differing in paper style. All of the Cambridge options are tiered into Core and Extended.

The point that costs families money is that narrower content means different papers, not easier versions of the same papers. A 0654 candidate revising from separate-science resources will study topics that cannot appear on their paper while possibly missing the specific emphasis their own syllabus places on others. The standard of written explanation expected does not drop with the content, so a student on a double award still has to name the specific interaction, give the trend with its reason, and explain a mechanism rather than define a term.

What a parent should do takes two minutes. Ask the school for the award code and the tier for science, in writing. Then give that code to any tutor before the first session and ask them whether they have taught it. A tutor who says they teach all the sciences at all levels has not answered the question.

Comparing the practical assessment routes

Practical assessment is where the two boards diverge most sharply, and where a Deira family in an apartment with no laboratory has the most to gain from understanding the difference. It is also the most learnable part of the whole science entry.

Cambridge sciences carry a separate practical component, and a school enters candidates either for a practical test, sat in the laboratory under examination conditions, or for an alternative-to-practical written paper that tests the same skills on paper. Which one your child sits is a school decision, and it is the single most useful thing to ask about, because the preparation differs completely. The alternative-to-practical paper asks about apparatus choice, variables, tabulation, plotting, anomalies and improvements, and those question types repeat across series with remarkable consistency, which makes them drillable in a way content questions are not.

Pearson does not use a separate practical component in its International GCSE sciences; practical skills are assessed within the written papers through questions about method, data and evaluation. The skills tested are similar, the context in which they appear is not, and revision material designed for a Cambridge alternative-to-practical paper is not the right preparation for a Pearson paper, nor the reverse.

Two consequences follow. First, a practical-skills block is one of the best-value purchases in IGCSE science for either board, because the material is narrow and repetitive and most students have never practised it deliberately. Second, this is work that can be done entirely online: variables, tabulation, graph plotting and error analysis need paper and data rather than apparatus. What no tutoring can supply is the laboratory experience itself, which belongs to the school.

Comparing the three sciences on where each is hard

Families often ask which science their child should be tutored in and expect the answer to be the one with the lowest grade. A better question is which one is hard in a way that tutoring can fix quickly, because the three sciences fail differently and respond to different work.

Physics is hard because it requires reasoning rather than recall. A student can know every relationship in electricity and still be unable to say what happens to the current elsewhere in a circuit when one resistance changes. The marks sit in explanation sequences and in interpreting graphs — what a gradient represents, what an area under a line means. That is teachable, and it transfers across topics, which makes physics a good target for a single term of weekly work.

Chemistry is hard because of precision. The content volume is manageable and the mark schemes are unforgiving: a named interaction rather than a general force, a trend with its reason, a correct sign, products at both electrodes with a justification, units and sensible rounding on every calculation. A chemistry grade often moves faster than a parent expects once presentation is fixed, because the underlying understanding was already there.

Biology is hard because of volume and terminology. There is more to know than in the other two and the marks turn on using the exact term the scheme requires — water potential rather than more water, active transport rather than movement. It is the most improvable of the three in a short block before an examination, which is why a late intervention in biology is more defensible than a late intervention in physics. The table sets the three side by side.

04

What each route lets your child do at 16

The consequence comparison is the one families make last and should make first, because the science entry is decided in Year 9 or early Year 10 and is difficult to change afterwards. A Deira student's post-16 options sit either at an A Level school in Al Qusais or Bur Dubai or at an IB Diploma school across the Creek in Al Garhoud or Dubai Festival City, and both have expectations about the science entry behind an application.

Three separate sciences keeps everything open: A Level or Diploma sciences in any of the three, including the Higher Level Chemistry that medicine, dentistry and pharmacy applications generally expect. A double award keeps most routes open, and schools will often accept it for one or two post-16 sciences, though a student arrives with less content behind them and the first term is harder. A single combined award narrows the field considerably and can close post-16 science entirely at some schools.

Nobody should read that as an instruction to take three separate sciences. Three sciences occupy three timetable blocks in a Dubai week that also carries mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and social and moral studies lessons, and a student struggling across three is worse placed than one doing well on a double award. The right comparison is between a student's realistic capacity and their realistic plans, made honestly with the school in Year 9.

One further point on equivalency. For Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track the published requirement is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one Advanced Level subject at no less than E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. How a double or combined award counts towards the five is a question for the school and, ultimately, for the Ministry; verify it on moe.gov.ae rather than relying on any tutoring website, including this one.

Comparing the cost of supporting one science against three

This is where the comparison becomes a budget. A student taking three separate sciences has three times the content and three sets of papers, and a family's instinct is to support all three. The arithmetic and the week both say otherwise.

Published Dubai rates, read in October 2026 and attributed: budget online generalists advertise from AED 33 to 52 an hour at Tutopiya and AED 45 to 65 at EdFlik; qualified subject tutors online sit at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE tuition from AED 150; specialists are quoted AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate's Dubai rate table in the same range; in-home one-to-one runs AED 180 to 350 per Bestimate and up to AED 500 for independent home tutors. Bestimate's monthly estimates for one weekly hour are AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-range and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist examination-year work.

Run those against a twelve-week term. One science supported weekly at the qualified band is roughly AED 1,800 to 3,600. Three sciences supported weekly at the same band is roughly AED 5,400 to 10,800, and requires three evenings a week that a Dubai Year 11 student does not have alongside eight or nine other subjects. The alternative shape — one science weekly, a practical-skills block covering all three, and fortnightly weekend timed papers — costs closer to the single-science figure and addresses all three entries, because practical skills and written-explanation discipline transfer across the sciences in a way content does not.

That is the genuinely useful finding on this page for a family with three science entries. Buy the transferable things once rather than the content three times. These are market figures rather than IB Gram's prices; we quote after a free trial lesson against a written plan with a term total.

Comparing what a good science session contains

  • A good science hour is mostly the student writing, not the tutor explaining
  • Answers should be marked aloud against the scheme, with the credited phrase named
  • Past papers must come from the correct award code and board
  • Ask your child what they were asked to do differently; silence is the answer

Two science tutors charging the same rate can deliver very different hours, and the difference is visible to a parent who knows what to look for. This comparison is worth running during a free trial.

A weaker session looks like a lesson: the tutor explains a topic, the student listens, worked examples appear on screen, and everybody leaves feeling the hour was productive. Nothing in that sequence tests whether the student can produce a creditable written answer, which is the only thing the examination measures. The student will report that the tutor explained it well, and the next marked paper will look the same as the last one.

A stronger session is mostly the student working. They attempt a question in writing, the tutor watches the answer appear and stops them at the point where the mark would be lost, and then the answer is marked aloud against the scheme with the specific credited phrase named. Over an hour that might cover three or four questions rather than a topic, and it produces one nameable behaviour to change. Ask your child afterwards what the session asked them to do differently; if there is no answer, it was a lesson rather than a correction.

Two further things to compare. Whether the tutor uses past papers from the correct award code and board, which you can check by asking to see the paper used. And whether written work is marked against the official scheme or simply checked for right answers, which is the difference between discovering that a method mark was missing and discovering that the final number was wrong.

07

Why the award code decides the revision material

This section exists because the mistake it describes is the most common and most wasteful one in IGCSE science tutoring, and it is made with good intentions by competent tutors who were never told the award code.

Revision resources are written for specific syllabuses. A guide aimed at Cambridge 0620 Chemistry covers organic chemistry, moles and electrolysis at a depth that a 0654 Co-ordinated Sciences candidate will not meet. A 0653 Combined Science candidate's content is narrower again. Work through the wrong guide and a student spends weeks on material that cannot be examined while the specific emphases of their own syllabus go unpractised — and then performs worse than their effort deserved, which damages confidence as well as the grade.

The same applies across boards. Pearson papers distribute marks across fewer, longer questions than Cambridge papers, and Pearson assesses practical skills inside the written papers rather than through a separate component. A student drilling a Cambridge alternative-to-practical paper in preparation for a Pearson entry is practising a paper that does not exist on their timetable.

The fix is one email to the school asking for the award code, the tier and the practical route for science, and then handing that information to any tutor before the first session. Ask the tutor to name the papers your child will sit on that code. If they can, the hour will be spent on the right material; if they cannot, no amount of teaching skill will put that right.

08

What a Deira address changes for science specifically

Most of what this page compares is independent of where a family lives, but two things are specific to this district and worth naming.

The first is that there is no laboratory at home, anywhere, and in dense apartment housing there is not even a kitchen table free for a demonstration. That sounds like a disadvantage and is mostly a clarification: the laboratory part of IGCSE science is the school's job under any arrangement, in a villa or a flat, and no in-home tutor arriving in Deira is bringing apparatus either. What a family can do at home is the data-handling, tabulation, plotting and error-analysis work that the practical component actually examines on paper, and that needs nothing but a desk and a printed data set.

The second is the quiet hour. Students travel out of Deira to school in Al Qusais, Bur Dubai or across the water, arriving home late and variably, and in a full flat the hour when a room is free moves from day to day. A session set to a fixed arrival estimate fails; one set from the real arrival, or moved to a Friday or Saturday morning, holds. This is also why a weekend timed-paper session works well here: a complete science paper takes well over an hour with marking, which is unrealistic on a school evening and straightforward on a quiet morning.

Ask the school about supervised study rooms as well. Most Dubai secondaries run them after hours free of charge and they are badly under-used, and for a student whose obstacle is space rather than teaching they are worth more than an additional paid session. The Metro running through Deira makes them reachable independently, which is a genuine advantage this district has over the villa suburbs.

09

Why the delivery answer is the same across all three entries

Having compared the entry patterns, the practical routes, the three sciences and the costs, it is worth noting what none of those comparisons changed.

Whatever the award code, the requirement is a tutor who has taught that code and can mark a written answer against the scheme. That is a supply problem rather than a geography problem: specialist supply in Dubai is thin and distributed by where tutors live, and a radius around Deira is a poor filter for a syllabus code. Matching from the whole available pool is what makes it possible to say yes to a 0654 Extended request one week and a 4PH1 request the next.

Whatever the award code, the session has to happen at an hour the student is genuinely available in a quiet room, which in this district varies day to day. And whatever the award code, the working surface needs to show the question, the student's written answer and the correction together, with the previous week's work retrievable — which a shared whiteboard does and a single sheet of paper does not.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. The honest limit is apparatus, which belongs to the school under any arrangement. Everything else in IGCSE science — theory, calculations, written explanation, data analysis and the whole of the practical-skills component as it is examined on paper — is work that an online one-to-one hour does at least as well as any other format, and from a far larger pool of people who have actually taught the code on your child's entry form.

Nearby areas we cover around Deira

Geography changes the session time and the study space rather than the science. These are the districts a Deira science student moves between.

Deira

Dense apartment blocks with both Metro lines nearby. Students travel out to school, arrival home is late and variable, and there is no laboratory at home, so practical skills work has to be done on paper and on data.

Al Qusais and Al Nahda

The adjacent school district with the largest rolls nearby, and where Co-ordinated and Combined Science entries are most common. Early dismissals and a slow return across the airport road.

Hor Al Anz and Al Muteena

Residential blocks with several schools within a short drive and the shortest journeys in this set. A 4:30pm session is realistically achievable from here on a school day.

Al Mamzar and Abu Hail

Quieter coastal streets with Deira Private School in that direction. Predictable journey times make a fixed weekly science slot easier to hold across a term.

Bur Dubai and Oud Metha

Long-established schools across the Creek, many entering students for the separate sciences. Two crossings a day makes this the longest routine commute for a Deira household.

Al Garhoud and Dubai Festival City

South of the Creek, carrying two large international schools and the nearest IB provision, which matters for students comparing A Level sciences with Diploma sciences.

Al Rigga and Naif

The commercial core, where households sit above shops and evening noise runs late. Weekend mornings carry more of the sustained work here than weekday evenings.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Ask the school for the award code

One email: which science award, which tier, and which practical route. Separate sciences, 0654, 0653 or a Pearson code, Core or Extended, practical test or alternative-to-practical. That answer determines what revision material is useful and is the cheapest quality control available.

  2. 02

    Send a marked script

The most recent marked science paper tells us whether marks are going to content, written precision, calculation presentation or practical-skills questions. Those are four different pieces of work, and the script usually identifies which within a page.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson, one per subject

One free trial lesson per subject before any payment. Ask the tutor to name the papers your child will sit on their award code, and watch whether the hour is mostly the student writing or mostly the tutor explaining.

    Buy the transferable things once

If three sciences are in play, we will usually propose one science weekly plus a practical-skills block and fortnightly timed papers, rather than three weekly sessions. Practical skills and written-explanation discipline transfer across the sciences; content does not.

    Reviewed on a timed paper

The review point is a complete paper on the correct award code, sat to time and marked together. If the score moved we pick the next target; if it did not we change the method or the tutor and say which we think it was.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to the award code

0654 is not the separate sciences and 0653 is narrower again. We ask for the code before matching, because the single most wasteful error in IGCSE science tutoring is revising separate-science material for a double or combined award candidate.

The practical route treated as a question

Cambridge candidates sit either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper, and Pearson assesses practical skills inside the written papers. Which one your child faces changes the preparation completely, and almost nobody asks.

Transferable work bought once

For a student with three science entries, practical skills and written-explanation discipline are the same work in all three. We would rather sell one science weekly plus a shared practical block than three weekly sessions a Dubai week cannot hold.

Honest about apparatus

We cannot handle equipment for your child, in Deira or anywhere else, and neither can a visiting tutor. Laboratory work is the school's. What we do is make the data a student generated earn marks on paper, which is what the practical component actually tests.

Rates with sources, compared by shape

Every AED figure here names its publisher and is dated October 2026, and the cost table compares supporting one science against three over a twelve-week term rather than quoting an hourly number with no context.

Claims we do not make

No regulator or board approval, no school partnership, no promise about a grade or score, no self-published ratings, and no statistic without a source. Where the published record has a gap, such as how a double award counts for equivalency, we point you at the Ministry rather than guess.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Deira: your questions answered

Is Co-ordinated Sciences easier than taking three separate sciences?+

It is narrower, which is not the same as easier. Cambridge 0654 covers all three sciences in one syllabus producing two grades, with less content in each discipline than 0625, 0620 and 0610 carry, but the standard of written explanation expected does not drop. A 0654 candidate still has to name the specific interaction, give a trend with its reason and explain a mechanism rather than define a term. It occupies two timetable blocks instead of three, which is usually the real reason a school recommends it.

What is the difference between 0654 and 0653?+

Both cover all three sciences in a single syllabus, but 0654 Co-ordinated Sciences produces two grades and 0653 Combined Science produces one, with 0653 carrying the narrowest content of any IGCSE science route. The practical consequence is post-16: three separate sciences keeps every A Level and Diploma science open, a double award keeps most open with a harder first term, and a single combined award often restricts or closes post-16 science entirely. Establish which your child is on in Year 9 or early Year 10.

How do I find out my child's science award code?+

One email to the school asking for three things: the award code for science, the tier, and the practical route. The answer will be separate sciences with codes such as 0625, 0620 and 0610, or Pearson's 4PH1, 4CH1 and 4BI1, or a combined route such as 0654 or 0653, with Core or Extended attached. Hand that answer to any tutor before the first session and ask them to name the papers your child will sit. It is two minutes of work that prevents weeks of wasted revision.

What is the alternative-to-practical paper and how is it prepared for?+

It is a written component Cambridge schools may enter candidates for instead of the laboratory practical test, testing the same skills on paper: apparatus choice, variables, tabulation, plotting, anomalies and suggested improvements. Because the question types repeat across series with unusual consistency, it is one of the most drillable components in the whole entry, and most students have never practised it deliberately. Three or four sessions on it is among the best-value purchases available in IGCSE science, and it needs no apparatus.

Does Pearson have a separate practical exam for sciences?+

No. Pearson International GCSE sciences assess practical skills within the written papers through questions on method, data and evaluation rather than through a separate component. The skills tested are similar to Cambridge's but the context in which they appear is not, and Pearson papers tend towards fewer, longer questions. A student preparing for a Pearson entry using Cambridge alternative-to-practical material is practising a paper that does not exist on their timetable.

If we can only tutor one science, which should it be?+

Whichever the marked papers show is weakest at the upper tier, with a tilt towards physics if the choice is close. Physics is hard because it requires reasoning rather than recall, and the explanation and graph-interpretation skills that fix it transfer into chemistry and biology answers. Biology is the most improvable in a short block close to the examinations, because its marks turn on exact terminology. Chemistry often moves quickest once calculation presentation and named interactions are fixed.

Should we support all three sciences at once?+

Almost never, on both arithmetic and timetable grounds. Three weekly sessions at the published qualified band of AED 150 to 300 an hour comes to roughly AED 5,400 to 10,800 across a twelve-week term, and requires three evenings a Dubai Year 11 week does not have alongside eight or nine other subjects. The better shape is one science weekly, a practical-skills block covering all three, and fortnightly weekend timed papers — because practical skills and explanation discipline transfer where content does not.

Why does my child lose marks in biology despite revising hard?+

Usually terminology rather than understanding. Biology mark schemes credit the exact term — water potential rather than more water, active transport rather than movement, specific named structures rather than descriptions — and a fluent paragraph that avoids the required word scores poorly. The fix is a condensed definition set plus command-term discipline, drilled on past-paper questions and marked against the official scheme. It is one of the fastest grade movements available in the subject and it is not achieved by re-reading the textbook.

What makes physics harder than the other two sciences?+

It asks for reasoning rather than recall. A student can know every relationship in electricity and still be unable to say what happens to the current elsewhere in a circuit when one resistance changes, because that requires following a consequence rather than retrieving a fact. The other recurring loss is graph interpretation: reading a value correctly and then failing to say what the gradient or the area under the line represents. Both are teachable and both transfer, which makes physics worth a term of weekly work rather than a late block.

Can science tutoring work at all without a laboratory?+

For everything the written papers examine, yes. Theory, calculations, written explanation, data handling, tabulation, graph plotting and error analysis all need paper and data rather than apparatus, and that includes the whole of the practical-skills component as it is tested on an alternative-to-practical paper or inside Pearson papers. Laboratory work itself belongs to the school under any arrangement — a visiting tutor in Deira is not bringing equipment either. What tutoring adds is making the data a student generated earn marks.

How can I tell a good science session from a bad one?+

By how much of it the student spends writing. A weaker session is a lesson: the tutor explains, the student listens, everybody feels productive, and the next marked paper looks like the last one. A stronger session has the student attempting questions in writing while the tutor stops them at the point the mark would be lost, then marks the answer aloud against the scheme naming the credited phrase. Ask your child what they were asked to do differently; if there is no answer, it was a lesson.

Does a double award count towards UAE equivalency?+

That is a question for the school and ultimately the Ministry rather than for a tutoring provider. The published British-track requirement is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one Advanced Level subject at no less than E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. How a two-grade double award is treated within those five should be verified on moe.gov.ae or with the emirate's attestation authority before you plan around it.

When is the right time to change a science entry?+

Year 9 or very early Year 10, because the entry pattern determines two years of teaching and the school builds timetable sets around it. By Year 11 the decision is effectively fixed, and a student unhappy with their entry is better served by working on performance within it than by pursuing a change that will not be granted. If your child has any chance of post-16 science, raise the question before sets are allocated rather than after the first disappointing report.

Will a science tutor come to our flat in Deira?+

Not from us. All UAE lessons are online, one-to-one, over live video with a shared whiteboard, and IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; that is part of our India service. For science the honest position is that no in-home tutor brings apparatus either, so the laboratory part belongs to the school under any arrangement, while everything the written papers test works at least as well online. In-home tutoring exists in the Dubai market at AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel.

What does science tutoring cost for a Deira family?+

Published October 2026 figures: qualified subject tutors online AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150; specialists AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270; budget online generalists AED 33 to 65, suitable for supervision rather than mark-scheme work. Bestimate's monthly estimates for one weekly hour run AED 240 to 600 budget, AED 600 to 1,200 mid and AED 1,000 to 2,000 plus for examination-year specialists. Those are market rates; we quote after a free trial.

Where can my child sit a full science paper if the flat is busy?+

A weekend morning at home is the commonest answer, since a complete paper plus marking takes well over an hour and is unrealistic on a school evening after a long commute. Beyond that, ask the school about supervised study rooms after hours, which most Dubai secondaries run free of charge and which are badly under-used. The Metro running through Deira makes them reachable independently, which is a genuine advantage this district has over the villa suburbs for an older student.

Start with the award code, not the subject

Separate sciences, a double award or a single combined award are three different qualifications, and a tutor working from the wrong one will spend weeks on material your child cannot be examined on. Send the code, the tier, the practical route and a recent marked script, and you will get a plan that names one science to work weekly and, if three entries are in play, the transferable practical and explanation work to buy once rather than three times. The first lesson is free, one per subject, before any payment. Lessons are online, one-to-one, over live video, in Gulf Standard Time.
