IB & IGCSE in Deira

What the course is, before anyone talks about tutoring

IB Chemistry is the Diploma subject where the gap between understanding and marks is widest. Students who can explain a concept out loud still lose marks in writing, because the mark scheme rewards a particular kind of precision: a direction and a reason, a correct unit, a state symbol, a named interaction rather than a vague force. A tutor who only teaches content will not close that gap. A tutor who works from mark schemes will.

The course itself is organised around two organising concepts, each with three themes. Structure covers models of the particulate nature of matter, models of bonding and structure, and the classification of matter. Reactivity covers what drives chemical reactions, how much and how fast and how far, and the mechanisms of chemical change. Higher Level carries additional content within those themes rather than extra themes, and sits longer papers. Running alongside is a practical scheme of work and the internally assessed scientific investigation, which carries 20 per cent of the final grade on its own.

That last number is the one Deira families most often underrate. The scientific investigation is a single piece of work of up to 3,000 words, marked against four criteria worth six marks each, and it is worth as much as a substantial slice of the written examinations. A student who produces a strong investigation and an average set of papers finishes above a student with the reverse profile, and the investigation is the part a family can actually plan for, because its deadline is set by the school and known a year ahead.

Locally, the picture is this. Deira is dense apartment housing north of the Creek, and most Diploma students here travel across the water to Al Garhoud or Dubai Festival City, arriving home around 4pm to 4:30pm. The IB accounts for roughly 7 per cent of Dubai private school enrolment against 37 per cent for the UK curriculum, and Chemistry at Higher Level is among the thinnest specialisms in the city, so a family needing one should ask early rather than urgently.

IB Gram delivers all UAE tuition online, one-to-one, over live video with a shared whiteboard. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. For chemistry the practical consequence is worth stating honestly: we can teach the theory, the calculations, the mechanisms, the data analysis and the investigation write-up, and we cannot handle apparatus for your child. Practical work is the school's job and is part of the course's required practical scheme; what tutoring adds is the ability to read a data set and write about it the way the mark scheme wants.

SLAges 16-19 · DP1 to DP2

Chemistry at Standard Level

The common core of all six themes, with a smaller practical hour requirement and shorter papers than Higher Level. The assessment comprises Paper 1, which contains a multiple-choice section and a data-based section, Paper 2 of short and extended response questions, and the scientific investigation at 20 per cent.

Standard Level Chemistry is a common choice for Deira students heading for business, environmental or social science routes who need a science. It is also the level where a qualified subject tutor in the mid price band is usually sufficient, with specialist help reserved for the investigation.

HLAges 16-19 · DP1 to DP2

Chemistry at Higher Level

Additional higher level content within each of the six themes, a larger practical hour requirement, and longer papers. The additional material is not bolted on at the end; it is woven through energetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, redox and organic chemistry, which is why an SL-only tutor is a poor match for HL work.

Higher Level Chemistry is the standard requirement for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and chemical engineering applications from the UAE, which is why demand for it in Dubai outstrips supply. Request a specialist weeks before the need becomes urgent rather than in the fortnight before a deadline.

IADP1 into DP2

The scientific investigation

A single internally assessed piece of up to 3,000 words carrying 20 per cent of the grade, marked against four criteria — research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation — each worth six marks for a total of 24. It is the one part of the course whose deadline is known a year in advance.

This is where paid support has the clearest legitimate value and the clearest boundary. A tutor may test whether a research question can generate usable quantitative data, teach the chemistry, read the criteria with the student and mark a complete draft. A tutor may not write it, produce the data, or edit it into their own prose.

PRACDP1 to DP2

The practical scheme of work

A required programme of laboratory work running across both years, including a collaborative sciences project undertaken with students of other science subjects. It is school-delivered and cannot be replaced by any tutoring arrangement, online or in person.

Ask the school how its practical hours are logged and when the collaborative project falls, because it is scheduled rather than continuous and families are regularly surprised by it. Confirm the hour requirements for your child's level with the teacher.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below are the syllabus themes and sub-topics as the current guide organises them, with a note on what each demands in writing rather than in understanding. This is the list a tutor should be able to discuss without prompting.

Structure 1: Models of the particulate nature of matter

SL and HL, with additional HL content

The particulate nature of matter, the nuclear atom, electron configurations, counting particles by mass through the mole, and ideal gases. Electron configuration questions reward precise notation and nothing else, and mole calculations are where significant figures and units begin costing marks that understanding cannot recover.

Structure 2: Models of bonding and structure

SL and HL, with additional HL content

The ionic model, the covalent model, the metallic model, and how models translate into materials. The commonest written failure is naming a vague force instead of the specific interaction: a mark scheme wants hydrogen bonding, or London dispersion forces, not strong intermolecular forces.

Structure 3: Classification of matter

SL and HL, with additional HL content

Classification of the elements through the periodic table and classification of organic compounds through functional groups. Periodicity questions require a trend, a reason and a comparison; students give the trend and stop, which loses two thirds of the available credit.

Reactivity 1: What drives chemical reactions?

SL and HL, with additional HL content

Measuring enthalpy changes, energy cycles, energy from fuels, and entropy and spontaneity. Sign conventions are the trap: bond enthalpy calculations, Hess cycles and the relationship between free energy change and spontaneity all punish a dropped negative sign with the whole mark.

Reactivity 2: How much, how fast, how far?

SL and HL, with additional HL content

The amount of chemical change, the rate of chemical change, and the extent of chemical change. Equilibrium answers need a direction of shift and a reason referencing the change made; rate questions need collision theory language rather than a restatement that the reaction goes faster.

Reactivity 3: Mechanisms of chemical change

SL and HL, with additional HL content

Proton transfer reactions, electron transfer reactions, and electron sharing and electron-pair sharing reactions. Mechanism marks are awarded for curly arrows starting at the correct electron source and ending at the correct destination, which is a drawing skill as much as a chemical one.

Organic chemistry across the themes

SL and HL, with substantially more at HL

Functional groups, reaction pathways and, at Higher Level, considerably more mechanism work. Students treat organic chemistry as memorisation and then meet an unfamiliar molecule. Teaching the pattern — what each functional group does under what conditions — is faster and more durable than learning pathways by rote.

Data-based and unfamiliar-context questions

SL and HL

A section of Paper 1 is data-based, and extended questions in Paper 2 routinely use contexts no textbook covers. These reward reading the stem carefully and applying a known principle to a new case, and they are the questions where strong recall and weak application separate most visibly.

Calculations across the course

SL and HL

Titration, limiting reagents, percentage yield, enthalpy, equilibrium constants and pH. The chemistry is usually right and the presentation loses marks: no units, wrong significant figures, or an answer given without the working that would have earned method credit.

The investigation write-up

SL and HL

Research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, each worth six marks. Evaluation is the criterion most often underscored, because students list generic weaknesses rather than naming a specific limitation, its effect on the data, and a realistic improvement.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, chosen by what the marked work shows rather than by preference. All lessons are online, one-to-one, over live video with a shared whiteboard both people write on.

Weekly theme work

One protected slot a week working through the themes in the order the school teaches them, with past-paper questions on each as it is covered rather than saved for the end. Chemistry builds, so a bonding gap left in DP1 reappears in organic mechanisms and equilibrium a year later.

  • Follows the school's scheme of work
  • Past-paper questions on each theme as it is taught
  • Written answers marked against the scheme, not just checked
  • Reviewed at each school assessment

Investigation block

Four to six sessions across the investigation timeline: testing the research question for feasibility, teaching the chemistry it needs, reading the four criteria with the student, and marking a complete draft against them. Protects 20 per cent of the grade for a small number of hours.

  • Research question tested for usable quantitative data
  • Criteria read before any writing begins
  • A complete draft marked, never rewritten
  • No data supplied and no text drafted by the tutor

Mark-scheme block after mocks

Six to eight sessions driven by the marked mock scripts, working on written precision: command-term discipline, calculation presentation, mechanism drawing and data-based question technique. This is where understanding gets converted into marks.

  • Starts from the scripts, not the syllabus
  • Targets the one trap costing most marks
  • Timed sections sat and marked together
  • Stops when the marks stop moving

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Deira

01

The six themes, and what each demands in writing

The current Chemistry guide organises the course under two concepts, Structure and Reactivity, each with three themes. Naming them matters because it is the fastest way to establish whether a prospective tutor has taught the course as it currently stands rather than an older version of it, and because it lets a parent see where their child's marked work is actually failing.

Structure 1 covers models of the particulate nature of matter: the particulate model, the nuclear atom, electron configurations, counting particles by mass through the mole, and ideal gases. Structure 2 covers models of bonding and structure: the ionic, covalent and metallic models and how those models translate into materials. Structure 3 covers classification of matter: the periodic table as a classification of elements, and functional groups as a classification of organic compounds.

Reactivity 1 asks what drives chemical reactions, covering enthalpy changes, energy cycles, energy from fuels, and entropy and spontaneity. Reactivity 2 asks how much, how fast and how far: the amount of chemical change, the rate of chemical change, and the extent of chemical change. Reactivity 3 asks about mechanisms: proton transfer, electron transfer, and electron sharing and electron-pair sharing reactions. Higher Level adds content within these themes rather than appending new ones, which is precisely why a tutor who has only taught Standard Level is a weak match for Higher Level work.

The table sets each theme against what the mark scheme actually wants from a written answer in it. That column is the useful one, because a student who understands bonding and writes strong intermolecular forces will be marked as though they did not.

The assessment, component by component

Chemistry is assessed through two written papers and the scientific investigation. Paper 1 contains a multiple-choice section and a data-based section. Paper 2 contains short-answer and extended-response questions. The scientific investigation carries 20 per cent of the final grade. Higher Level papers are longer and carry the additional higher level content. Confirm the exact weightings for your child's cohort with their teacher, since the subject guide has been revised and published weightings should come from the school rather than from any website.

Each component fails in its own way, which is why a single revision strategy underperforms. The multiple-choice section punishes misreading and rewards elimination technique, and students who have never practised it under time pressure lose marks they could not lose on content grounds. The data-based section rewards careful reading of axes, units and uncertainties, and students treat it as a reading exercise rather than a chemistry one. Paper 2 extended responses reward command-term discipline: an explain answer that describes, or a deduce answer with no reasoning shown, loses marks regardless of how correct the chemistry underneath is.

The investigation is different in kind. It is marked against four criteria — research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation — worth six marks each for twenty-four in total, within a 3,000-word limit. Nothing about it is time-pressured, which means every mark lost in it was lost to planning rather than to performance. That makes it the most controllable 20 per cent in the subject and the part most worth spending tutoring money on early.

A practical note for parents: ask to see which component your child's marked mocks actually dropped marks in, as a proportion rather than in total. Families frequently buy content teaching when the scripts show a multiple-choice or data-based technique problem, which is a different and much shorter piece of work.

03

The mark-scheme traps that recur every session

This is the most useful section on the page for a student already working hard. These traps cost marks in every examination series, they are the same traps every year, and they have nothing to do with how well a student understands chemistry. A tutor who works from mark schemes will name them in the first session; a tutor who works from a textbook will not see them at all.

The first is naming a general force where the scheme wants a specific interaction. Hydrogen bonding, London dispersion forces, dipole-dipole interactions — these are the credited terms. Strong intermolecular forces earns nothing, and students write it constantly because it feels like the right register. The second is a periodicity or trend answer that gives the trend without the reason and the comparison. The scheme usually wants three things and students supply one.

The third is sign convention in energetics. Bond enthalpies, Hess cycles and free energy relationships all turn on signs, and a dropped negative produces a numerically wrong answer that the scheme cannot credit even where the method was sound. The fourth is equilibrium language: the scheme wants the direction of shift and the reason tied to the change imposed, and students write that the equilibrium adjusts. The fifth is calculation presentation — missing units, wrong significant figures, or a final answer with no working, which forfeits the method marks that would otherwise have survived an arithmetic slip.

The sixth is mechanism drawing. Curly arrow marks are awarded for arrows beginning at the correct electron source — a lone pair, a pi bond, a bond being broken — and ending at the correct destination. A mechanism that is conceptually right and drawn loosely scores badly. All six are habits, all six are teachable in weeks rather than terms, and together they typically account for more lost marks than any content gap.

Organic chemistry: pattern rather than memorisation

  • Teach functional-group behaviour, not pathway lists
  • Reagents and conditions select which reaction happens
  • Mechanism marks depend on where the arrow starts and ends
  • Six well-aimed sessions usually changes the whole feel of the topic

Organic chemistry is where most Deira Chemistry students decide the subject is impossible, and the reason is almost always that they are memorising rather than learning the pattern. Learned as a list of named reactions, organic chemistry is an unbounded memory task and the first unfamiliar molecule defeats it. Learned as functional-group behaviour under given conditions, it is a small number of rules applied repeatedly.

The structure to teach is this. Each functional group has a characteristic reactivity: it is electron-rich or electron-poor, it has a site that attracts attack or a site that donates. Reagents and conditions determine which of its available reactions occurs. Pathways are then derivable rather than remembered, because the student asks what this group does to that group rather than recalling a diagram. At Higher Level, where mechanism work expands considerably, the same framing carries: a mechanism is a sequence of electron movements, each with a reason.

Mechanism marks follow from the drawing, which is why a chemistry session needs a working surface where both people can draw. Curly arrows are awarded for starting at the correct electron source and finishing at the correct destination, with intermediates shown where the scheme requires them. A student who knows what happens but draws the arrow from the wrong atom gets no credit, and that is a correctable drawing habit rather than a conceptual failure.

The practical sequence we would use with a student stuck in organic chemistry: two sessions establishing functional-group behaviour as a framework, two sessions deriving rather than recalling pathways, and two sessions drilling mechanism drawing against mark schemes. Six sessions, and the subject usually stops feeling like memory work.

05

Calculations: where the chemistry is right and the marks are not

Calculation questions in IB Chemistry are unusual in that most lost marks are not chemistry errors. A student who can set up a titration calculation correctly and then presents it without units, to the wrong number of significant figures, or with no working shown, loses marks that no amount of further content teaching will recover. This is the single easiest category of marks to get back.

The recurring cases are predictable. Titration and limiting-reagent problems, where the moles are computed correctly and the final answer is not rounded as the data allows. Percentage yield and atom economy, where the formula is misremembered under pressure. Enthalpy from bond enthalpies and from Hess cycles, where sign errors dominate. Equilibrium constant calculations, where students substitute initial rather than equilibrium concentrations. And pH and acid-base work, where the logarithmic relationship is applied in the wrong direction.

The method that fixes all of them is mechanical and slightly tedious: a fixed layout used every time. State the relationship, substitute with units carried through, compute, then round to the significant figures the least precise datum allows, and state the unit. Students resist this because it feels slower; it is slower for the first fortnight and then faster, because the layout prevents the error rather than catching it afterwards.

Worth noting for parents comparing tutors: ask a candidate what significant-figure rule they apply to a calculated answer and why. A specialist answers immediately, in terms of the precision of the supplied data. A generalist says to use three, which is a guess that happens to be right often enough to hide the fact that it is a guess.

The scientific investigation, criterion by criterion

Twenty per cent of the grade sits in a single piece of work of up to 3,000 words, assessed against four criteria worth six marks each. Unlike the papers, nothing about it is time-pressured, which means every mark lost in it was lost to planning. That is why it belongs at the front of a tutoring plan rather than the back.

Research design, the first criterion, rewards a focused research question with identified and justified variables and a method capable of generating sufficient relevant data. The commonest failure is a question too broad to be answered with the apparatus available in a school laboratory, chosen because it sounded interesting. Data analysis rewards appropriate processing with uncertainties carried through and presented clearly; students process correctly and then omit uncertainty treatment entirely.

Conclusion rewards an interpretation justified by the data and compared against the accepted scientific context, which means a student has to find and cite a literature value rather than simply state what their graph showed. Evaluation is the criterion most consistently underscored across cohorts, because students list generic weaknesses — human error, more trials would help — instead of naming a specific limitation, explaining its effect on their particular data, and proposing a realistic improvement.

A workable timeline, allowing for the school's own internal deadline being earlier than families expect: topic candidates in DP1 term two, research question tested for feasibility by the end of DP1, data collected and processed over the following months, a complete draft early in DP2 term one, then revision after supervisor feedback. Ask the Diploma coordinator for the internal deadline in writing at the start of DP1.

07

Using past papers properly

Most Chemistry students use past papers badly, in a specific and fixable way: they attempt questions, check the answers, feel reassured or discouraged, and move on. Nothing in that sequence tells them why a mark was lost, which is the only information that changes anything.

The method that works has three steps. First, attempt the question under time, without notes, and write the answer out in full even when it feels obvious, because the written form is what is marked. Second, mark it against the official mark scheme rather than against the answer, awarding marks point by point and noting which specific credited phrase was absent. Third, classify the loss: content not known, command term ignored, presentation fault, or question misread. Those four need different responses, and a student who does not classify ends up re-reading the textbook regardless of which one applies.

The classification is what a tutor adds most efficiently. A student cannot see a missing method step in their own work, because the omission is invisible to the person who made it. An hour spent on a marked script with somebody reading it in mark-scheme language usually produces one named behaviour to change, and changing one behaviour reliably recovers more marks than another pass through a theme.

On sourcing: reference the official specimen and past materials through the school and the board's own channels rather than collecting unofficial copies. Reproducing or distributing board material is a copyright matter, and the school already has legitimate access to what a student needs.

08

What chemistry support costs, and which component it should target

Published Dubai rates, read in October 2026 and attributed. Tutopiya advertises from around AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65, online and generally generalist. Qualified subject tutors online sit at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IB tuition from AED 200. Specialists are quoted AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate's Dubai rate table in the same range. BartyED publishes AED 650 at the named or examiner-level end. In-home one-to-one runs AED 180 to 350 per Bestimate, with independent home tutors quoted to AED 500.

The useful question is not which band but which component the money should target, because chemistry fails in component-specific ways. A budget-band hour cannot teach command-term discipline or mark-scheme precision, because the person delivering it has not marked against a scheme. A qualified-band hour teaches theme content well and is the right place for most Standard Level work. A specialist-band hour is what diagnosis, investigation feasibility and Higher Level additional content actually require, and a family should buy fewer of those rather than cheaper ones.

Two chemistry-specific notes on value. The investigation is 20 per cent of the grade and its deadline is known a year ahead, so four specialist sessions aimed at it early is the highest-return purchase in the subject. And the in-home premium of roughly AED 50 to 150 an hour buys proximity in a subject where a shared digital whiteboard is a better surface for mechanism drawing than paper, since both people can draw and the board is saved between sessions. Advertised monthly packages show roughly AED 799 for eight online sessions against AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions.

Those are market figures, not IB Gram's prices. We quote after a free trial lesson, before any payment, against a written plan with a total on it, because an investigation block and a year of Higher Level theme work are different purchases.

What an online chemistry tutor can and cannot do

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. In chemistry that limitation deserves a straight answer rather than a slogan, so here is the honest division of labour.

What online one-to-one teaching does well, and in some respects better than paper: mechanism drawing on a shared whiteboard where both people draw and the board is saved between sessions; data analysis with the student's own spreadsheet and graphs on screen; marking a written answer line by line against a scheme with the annotations retained; and working through a calculation while watching the student's layout appear, which is the moment the error becomes visible. For a subject whose marks turn on written precision, that is the right working surface.

What it cannot do is handle apparatus. Practical skills are developed in the school laboratory as part of the required practical scheme of work, including the collaborative sciences project, and no tutoring arrangement replaces that. What a tutor can do around it is make the practical work count for marks: interpreting results the student generated, teaching uncertainty treatment, and turning a laboratory session into an investigation write-up that satisfies the four criteria.

There is also the Deira-specific point. Students here travel across the Creek to school and arrive home late and variably, and in dense apartment housing the quiet hour moves from day to day. A session set from dismissal time fails; one set from arrival, or moved to a weekend morning when the flat is quieter, holds. Where a tutor in the room is genuinely needed for other reasons, the Dubai market supplies it at the rates above and a family should use it.

10

The honesty boundary on the investigation

The scientific investigation is among the most commonly outsourced pieces of Diploma coursework, and at least one operation competing for searches like this sells completed internal assessments. The asymmetry is stark: the fee is paid once, the malpractice finding attaches to the student, and the possible consequence is the loss of the Diploma. The seller carries nothing at all.

Legitimate paid help is substantial and clearly bounded. A tutor may challenge whether a research question is answerable with school apparatus and sufficient to generate usable quantitative data. They may teach the chemistry the investigation rests on. They may read the four criteria with the student so they know what evaluation actually means in marking terms. They may mark a complete draft against those criteria and explain what a supervisor's comment requires. They may insist on a timeline that fits the school's internal deadline.

A tutor may not write or draft any part of it, produce the data analysis for the student to insert, supply data the student did not collect, invent an uncertainty treatment, or edit the text until the prose is theirs rather than the student's. The working test is whether the student can explain, unprompted, why each decision and each sentence is in the document. If they cannot, it should not be there.

This is better teaching as well as safer. A student who has been made to defend their own research question and write their own evaluation has learned something that transfers to the Extended Essay and to university laboratory work. A student handed a finished investigation has learned nothing and carries a risk on their record until somebody notices.

Nearby areas we cover around Deira

Geography affects the session time rather than the chemistry. These are the districts a Deira chemistry student travels between and what each does to the afternoon.

Deira

Dense apartment blocks with both Metro lines nearby. Students travel out to school, so sessions are set from arrival home, and the sustained work — full papers, investigation drafting — usually moves to a weekend morning.

Al Garhoud and Dubai Festival City

Across the Creek, carrying the nearest IB Diploma provision at Deira International School and Universal American School. Arrival home in Deira from here is realistically 4pm to 4:30pm.

Hor Al Anz and Al Muteena

Residential blocks with the shortest journeys in this set, and the one part of the district where a 4:30pm session is realistically achievable on a school day.

Al Mamzar and Abu Hail

Quieter coastal streets with predictable journey times, which makes a fixed weekly chemistry slot easier to hold across a full term than for families crossing the Creek twice daily.

Al Qusais and Al Nahda

The adjacent large-roll school district, mostly other curricula at 16. Students moving from here into the Diploma arrive with an IGCSE chemistry base and a predictable set of gaps.

Bur Dubai and Oud Metha

Long-established schools across the Creek. Two crossings a day makes this the longest routine commute for a Deira household, pushing sessions to 5:30pm or later.

Al Rigga and Naif

The commercial core, where households sit above shops and evening noise runs late. Weekend mornings carry more of the work here than weekday evenings.

Where most Diploma chemistry students from this part of Dubai actually study, since the nearest IB provision sits across the Creek rather than inside Deira itself.

  • Deira International School
  • Universal American School
  • Al Mawakeb School Al Garhoud
  • Dubai English Speaking School

Deira, Al Mamzar and Hor Al Anz

The schools closest to home, mostly running other curricula at 16. Families choosing Higher Level Chemistry for a medicine application are usually choosing a school move as well.

  • Deira Private School
  • Al Diyafah High School
  • Al Sadiq Islamic English School
  • New Indian Model School

Al Qusais and Bur Dubai

The large-roll districts east and south, mostly IGCSE at 16. A substantial share of Deira Diploma chemistry students came through these schools with a Cambridge or Pearson science background.

  • Dubai Scholars Private School
  • The Millennium School Dubai
  • The Indian High School Dubai
  • St Mary's Catholic High School

Schools are named only as local context so families can place themselves. IB Gram has no affiliation with, and claims no endorsement from, any school listed.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Say the level and send a marked script

Standard or Higher Level, the year of study, and the most recent marked paper or investigation draft. The script is the brief: it usually shows within a page whether the problem is content, command terms, presentation or data-based technique.

  2. 02

    Ask us about the themes

During the trial, ask the tutor to name the six syllabus themes and say what the mark scheme wants in a bonding question. A specialist does both without hesitation. It is the fastest way to establish that they have taught the course as it currently stands.

  3. 03

    Free trial lesson before payment

One free trial lesson before any payment, with the marked work open and the investigation question to hand if there is one. Ask the tutor what significant-figure rule they apply to a calculated answer and why; the answer is diagnostic.

  4. 04

    One target per block

The plan names one target — a theme, a trap, a component, or the investigation — the school assessment it is aimed at, and the evidence that will show it worked. If the investigation is still open, that is almost always where we would start.

  5. 05

    Reviewed on marked writing

The review point is a written answer or a timed section marked against the scheme, not a session count. We say whether the target behaviour changed, and if it did not, whether we think the problem was the method, the pace or the match.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The syllabus named, not gestured at

Three Structure themes and three Reactivity themes, with the sub-topics set out. A parent can use that list to establish whether a prospective tutor has taught the current course, which no amount of profile reading will tell them.

Mark schemes, not textbooks

Most lost marks in this subject are written-precision failures rather than content gaps: a vague force, a missing reason, a dropped sign, a mechanism arrow from the wrong atom. We publish the six recurring traps and work from scripts rather than chapters.

The investigation treated as 20 per cent

A fifth of the grade sits in a piece of work with no time pressure and a deadline known a year ahead, which makes every mark lost in it a planning failure. Four early specialist sessions aimed at it is the highest-return purchase in the subject.

Honest about practicals

We cannot handle apparatus for your child, and we say so. Laboratory work belongs to the school's required practical scheme. What we add is turning the data a student generated into a write-up that satisfies the four criteria.

Level-matched, not subject-matched

Higher Level content is woven through all six themes rather than appended, so a Standard Level tutor is a poor match for Higher Level work. We match on the level and will give you a date rather than substitute when a Higher Level specialist is not free.

Rates with sources and a target

Every AED figure here names its publisher and is dated October 2026, and the spend table says which component each band should be aimed at. Buying the wrong band for the job is the commonest waste in this subject, in both directions.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Deira: your questions answered

What are the six themes in IB Chemistry?+

The course is organised under two concepts. Structure 1 covers models of the particulate nature of matter, including the nuclear atom, electron configurations, the mole and ideal gases. Structure 2 covers the ionic, covalent and metallic bonding models and how they translate into materials. Structure 3 covers classification: the periodic table and functional groups. Reactivity 1 asks what drives reactions, through enthalpy, energy cycles, fuels and entropy. Reactivity 2 asks how much, how fast and how far. Reactivity 3 covers mechanisms: proton transfer, electron transfer and electron sharing.

Why does my child understand chemistry but still lose marks?+

Because the mark scheme rewards written precision rather than understanding. Six traps account for most of it: writing strong intermolecular forces instead of naming hydrogen bonding or London dispersion forces; giving a trend without the reason and comparison; dropping a sign in an energetics calculation; writing that an equilibrium adjusts instead of naming the direction and the cause; omitting units or working from a calculation; and drawing mechanism arrows from the wrong atom. All six are habits, and all six are fixable in weeks.

How much is the chemistry internal assessment worth?+

The scientific investigation carries 20 per cent of the final grade, marked against four criteria — research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation — worth six marks each for twenty-four in total, within a 3,000-word limit. Confirm the weighting for your child's cohort with their teacher. Unlike the papers nothing about it is time-pressured, so every mark lost in it was lost to planning. That makes it the most controllable fifth of the grade in the subject.

Which investigation criterion do students score worst on?+

Evaluation, consistently. It rewards naming a specific limitation, explaining its effect on that student's particular data, and proposing a realistic improvement. Students instead list generic weaknesses — human error, more trials would help — which earns very little. The second weakest is usually conclusion, where the criterion requires comparison against the accepted scientific context, meaning a literature value has to be found and cited rather than simply stating what the graph showed.

My child finds organic chemistry impossible. Is it fixable?+

Usually, and quickly, because the problem is nearly always method rather than ability. Students memorise named reactions, which is an unbounded memory task that collapses at the first unfamiliar molecule. Taught as functional-group behaviour — each group is electron-rich or electron-poor, and reagents and conditions select which reaction happens — pathways become derivable rather than recalled. Two sessions on the framework, two deriving pathways and two drilling mechanism arrows usually changes how the whole topic feels.

What exactly earns a mark in a mechanism question?+

Curly arrows that start at the correct electron source and end at the correct destination, with intermediates shown where the scheme requires them. The source is a lone pair, a pi bond or a bond being broken, and an arrow drawn loosely between two molecules earns nothing even where the student knows what is happening. This is why a chemistry session needs a surface both people can draw on, and it is a correctable drawing habit rather than a conceptual failure.

How should my child use past papers for chemistry?+

Three steps. Attempt the question under time and write the answer out in full, because the written form is what is marked. Mark it against the official mark scheme point by point, noting which credited phrase was absent, rather than checking the final answer. Then classify the loss as content, command term, presentation or misreading, because those four need different responses. Students who skip the classification re-read the textbook whichever applies. Get papers and schemes through the school's own legitimate access.

Can online chemistry tutoring work without a laboratory?+

For everything except handling apparatus, yes, and for some things better than paper. Mechanism drawing on a shared whiteboard where both people draw and the board is saved between sessions, data analysis with the student's own graphs on screen, and marking written answers line by line against a scheme all work well. Practical skills belong to the school's required practical scheme of work, including the collaborative sciences project, and no tutoring replaces that. What tutoring adds is making the data count for marks.

Is a Standard Level chemistry tutor suitable for Higher Level?+

Generally not. Higher Level content is woven through all six themes rather than appended at the end, with the additional material concentrated in energetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, redox and organic chemistry. A tutor who has taught only Standard Level will not know where the Higher Level boundary sits and will over-teach some topics while missing others. Ask any candidate which level they have taught, by name, and do not accept the subject title as an answer.

What significant figures should a calculated chemistry answer use?+

As many as the least precise piece of supplied data allows, which is the rule the mark scheme applies and the answer a specialist gives immediately. A generalist tends to say three, which is right often enough to hide that it is a guess. This is worth asking any prospective tutor during a trial, because the answer indicates whether they have marked work against a scheme. Rounding faults are among the cheapest marks in the subject to recover.

When should the chemistry investigation question be settled?+

Topic candidates in DP1 term two and the research question tested for feasibility by the end of DP1, with data collection and processing over the following months and a complete draft early in DP2 term one. The school's internal deadline, not any external window, is the one that binds, and it is usually earlier than families expect, so ask the Diploma coordinator for it in writing at the start of DP1. A question too broad for school apparatus discovered late is the most expensive error available.

How long does it take to find a Higher Level chemistry tutor in Dubai?+

Up to a week or two in normal conditions and longer around mock season, because Higher Level Chemistry is one of the thinnest specialisms in the city. The IB accounts for roughly 7 per cent of Dubai private school enrolment against 37 per cent for the UK curriculum, so science specialists who have actually taught the Higher Level course are scarce everywhere, not just in one district. Request early, and if the deadline is tight we will give you a date rather than substitute a Standard Level tutor.

Does my child need Chemistry HL for medicine?+

Higher Level Chemistry is the standard expectation for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and chemical engineering applications, and it is the main reason demand for it in Dubai outstrips supply. Requirements vary by institution and country, so check two or three specific target courses rather than relying on a general rule, and check whether a second Higher Level science is also expected. No tutoring is required for any admissions process, and nobody can promise a particular grade or outcome.

Will a chemistry tutor come to our apartment in Deira?+

Not from us. All UAE lessons are online, one-to-one, over live video with a shared whiteboard, and IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; that is part of our India service. For chemistry the whiteboard genuinely suits the subject, since mechanism drawing and calculation layout need a surface both people can write on with the work preserved between sessions. In-home tutoring exists in the Dubai market at AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel for families who want it.

What does chemistry tutoring cost and what should it target?+

Published October 2026 figures: qualified subject tutors online AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200, which suits Standard Level theme content and multiple-choice or data-based technique. Specialists AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270, which is what Higher Level content, diagnosis and investigation work actually require. Budget online generalists AED 33 to 65, suitable only for homework supervision. Buy fewer specialist hours aimed at the investigation rather than many cheap ones.

Can a tutor help with the investigation without risking malpractice?+

Yes, within a clear line. A tutor may test whether a research question is answerable with school apparatus and can generate usable quantitative data, teach the chemistry it rests on, read the four criteria with the student, mark a complete draft against them, explain a supervisor comment and enforce a timeline. A tutor may not write or draft any part of it, produce the data analysis, supply data, invent an uncertainty treatment, or edit it into their own prose. The test is whether the student can explain every decision unprompted.

Send a marked script and the investigation question

Those two documents answer most of what a chemistry plan needs. The script shows whether marks are going to content, command terms, calculation presentation or data-based technique, and those are four different pieces of work. The investigation question shows whether a fifth of the grade is already secure or still at risk. Tell us the level and the year alongside them, and you will get one target and an honest statement of what the time available can achieve. The first lesson is free, before any payment. Lessons are online, one-to-one, over live video on a shared whiteboard, in Gulf Standard Time.
