IB Physics Tutor in Al Warqa

Parents looking for an IB physics tutor in Al Warqa are usually asking one question: is there anybody near me who actually knows this syllabus? The honest answer for this part of Dubai is that the number is small, the syllabus changed recently, and plenty of competent physicists are still teaching the version with options and a third paper. This page sets out what the current course contains and how to test whether somebody knows it. Lessons run one-to-one over live video.

IB & IGCSE in Al Warqa

Is there anybody near Al Warqa who knows IB Physics properly?

Taken literally, the answer is probably not, and it is worth explaining why rather than arguing with the question. Al Warqa has no IB school inside it. The schools immediately around the community, in Al Warqa'a and Al Qusais, are largely CBSE and British. The nearest IB Diploma teaching sits in Mirdif and Dubai Festival City, twenty to thirty minutes away at pickup time, and teachers at those schools cannot be paid to tutor students enrolled there. So the resident pool of people within a short drive who teach Diploma physics at Higher Level is genuinely tiny.

The second part of the answer is harder and more useful. Knowing physics and knowing this physics course are different things, and the gap widened when the syllabus was revised. The current guide organises content into five themes rather than the old topic-plus-options structure, removes the optional units and the third paper, and replaces the old practical scheme with a single scientific investigation assessed on four criteria. A physicist who last taught the previous version will teach your child content they no longer need and miss the structure they are actually assessed against.

That gives a parent a practical test, and it takes thirty seconds. Ask which theme covers fields, how many papers there are at Higher Level, and what the four investigation criteria are called. A tutor currently teaching this course answers instantly. One who mentions options, or a Paper 3, is describing a syllabus your child is not sitting. That question is worth more than any list of degrees, and it is the one almost nobody asks.

On delivery, stated plainly: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. Home visits are a service we run only in India. Al Warqa physics lessons are one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. For this subject the format is well matched to the work, because most dropped physics marks are in graphs, uncertainties and written explanation, all of which are better addressed with a student's own script on a shared screen and a mark scheme open beside it.

The rest of this page is written so the test can be applied. The five themes and what sits in each. Paper weightings and durations. The content that exists only at Higher Level, which is where a mismatched tutor becomes obvious. The investigation criteria with their mark allocations. Where marks actually go, specifically rather than generally. And an honest account of availability, including how long a Higher Level match usually takes and what happens when nobody suitable is free. Everything here is checkable against the subject guide your child's school works from, and it should be: a tutoring page is not an authority on an IB syllabus, and the school's own documents and the IB coordinator are. What a page like this can usefully do is give a parent the vocabulary to ask better questions, so the first paid hour starts from a diagnosis rather than from a conversation about how physics makes a teenager feel.

Diploma Programme Physics

Available at Higher and Standard Level, with content organised into five themes and assessed by two written papers plus the scientific investigation, which carries twenty per cent. Higher Level includes additional content within each theme rather than separate units, so the depth increases across the whole course rather than in one bolt-on section.

Al Warqa Diploma physicists travel to Mirdif or Festival City, which puts a realistic session at 17:15 or later. Physics tolerates a late start better than mathematics does for recall work, and worse for anything involving unfamiliar derivation, so the slot should be chosen with the week's topic in mind.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1 to MYP 5

Middle Years Programme Sciences

Assessed against four criteria each marked 0 to 8: A knowing and understanding, B inquiring and designing, C processing and evaluating, D reflecting on the impacts of science. There is no external examination, and the report grade is a conversion from criterion totals rather than a test average.

Criterion B is the direct ancestor of the Diploma investigation's research design criterion, and criterion C of its data analysis. A student with weak B and C in MYP 5 will meet the same weakness in the Diploma investigation eighteen months later, which is the cheapest predictable problem to fix early in this whole subject.

IGCSE Physics, as the other route in

Cambridge 0625 or Pearson 4PH1, tiered Core and Extended in Cambridge, with either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper. Many Al Warqa students arrive in Diploma Physics from this route rather than from MYP, and the gap is different in character.

An IGCSE Extended candidate arrives with strong recall and calculation and no experience of extended written explanation or of designing an investigation. Four to eight weeks of focused work usually covers it, provided somebody names the gap rather than assuming the transition takes care of itself.

Career-related Programme

Diploma courses combined with a career-related study, a reflective project and a personal and professional skills course. A student can take Diploma Physics within it, which keeps the subject and its assessment intact while reducing the total load.

Named here because a student struggling with Higher Level Physics inside a full six-subject Diploma has options besides buying more physics hours, including dropping to Standard Level. A tutor who never raises either is selling time rather than advising.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Physics is one subject and five themes, and a tutor needs to know which theme your child is currently in. These notes name each theme and where marks go inside it.

Theme A: Space, time and motion

HL and SL

Kinematics, forces, momentum, work and energy, with rigid body mechanics and relativity extending the theme at Higher Level. Marks go on free-body diagrams drawn carelessly and on momentum problems where the system is never defined, both of which are habit faults.

Theme B: The particulate nature of matter

HL and SL

Thermal physics, the gas laws, current and circuits. The recurring loss is circuit analysis under time pressure: students who can state Kirchhoff's laws cannot apply them to an unfamiliar network, which is a practice problem rather than a knowledge one.

Theme C: Wave behaviour

HL and SL

Simple harmonic motion, wave models, superposition, standing waves and the Doppler effect, with further treatment at Higher Level. Phase relationships and the distinction between intensity and amplitude are where answers go wrong consistently.

Theme D: Fields

HL and SL

Gravitational, electric and magnetic fields, potential and induction, with substantially more at Higher Level including field and potential gradients. This is the theme where Higher Level depth is most visible, and the one a tutor teaching the old syllabus will organise incorrectly.

Theme E: Nuclear and quantum physics

HL and SL

Structure of the atom, radioactive decay, fission and fusion, with quantum physics and nuclear binding extended at Higher Level. Decay calculations are straightforward; the extended explanation questions about models and evidence are where marks are lost.

Uncertainties and error analysis

HL and SL, across all themes

Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, propagation through calculations, and uncertainty in gradients. Examined throughout rather than as a topic, which is why students who have never been taught it properly lose marks on every paper rather than in one place.

Graph work and data analysis

HL and SL

Linearising relationships, reading gradients from axis values, error bars and lines of maximum and minimum gradient. The single most reliable source of recoverable marks in the subject, and the one most often treated as a skill students should already have.

Command terms and extended explanation

HL and SL

State, describe, explain, outline, discuss and compare each demand a distinct answer shape. A student who explains when asked to state wastes time; one who states when asked to explain loses the marks entirely. Twenty minutes of teaching and a term of enforcement.

The scientific investigation

HL and SL

Twenty per cent of the grade, a single report assessed on four criteria each worth six marks: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The student designs it, runs it, analyses it and writes it. A tutor teaches the criteria and reviews their drafts.

Mathematics for physics

HL and SL

Logarithms, trigonometry, vectors and, for Higher Level, comfort with rearranging multi-variable relationships. Students taking Applications and Interpretation mathematics alongside Higher Level Physics sometimes need explicit support here, and it is rarely identified as the actual problem.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements matched to three different physics problems. All run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and none involves travel to an Al Warqa address.

Weekly support through the themes

One session a week moving with the school's scheme of work, so the tutor is consolidating the theme currently being taught rather than running a parallel course. The most useful version of this starts in the first term of Year 12, because Higher Level depth in fields and in waves builds on earlier themes being secure.

  • Follows the school's own order through the five themes
  • Uncertainties and graph work taught alongside, not separately
  • Command-term discipline enforced in every written answer
  • Reviewed each reporting cycle against the school's marks

A graphs, uncertainties and technique block

Six to eight sessions on the skills examined across every paper rather than on any single theme: uncertainty propagation, linearising relationships, gradients from axis values, error bars, and the written explanation questions that reward structure. This is the highest-yield block in the subject for a student who knows the content.

  • Targets the marks lost on every paper rather than in one topic
  • Student's own scripts annotated live against a mark scheme
  • Finite, with a stated number of sessions
  • Suitable from the middle of Year 12 onwards

A scientific investigation block

Six to eight sessions on the investigation, started before the school's first internal deadline so the research question can still change. The tutor teaches the four criteria in the examiner's wording, questions whether the design can produce analysable data, and comments on the student's own draft. The student designs, runs, analyses and writes it.

  • Four criteria explained with their six-mark allocations
  • Research question pressure-tested for feasibility early
  • Feedback on the student's own draft only
  • Ends on a stated date rather than rolling onward

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Warqa

01

The thirty-second test for whether a tutor knows this syllabus

  • Which theme contains fields? A current tutor answers instantly
  • How many written papers at Higher Level? Two, not three
  • What are the four investigation criteria? Research design, data analysis, conclusion, evaluation
  • What will you refuse to do with the investigation? The answer should be immediate

Ask three questions before anything else. Which theme contains fields? How many written papers are there at Higher Level? What are the four scientific investigation criteria called? Somebody currently teaching this course answers all three without pausing. Somebody who last taught the previous version will reach for topic numbers, mention the optional units, or describe a third paper, and you will have learned in half a minute what a CV would never have told you.

This matters more in physics than in most subjects because the revision was structural rather than cosmetic. Content is now organised into five themes rather than a core plus options. The optional units are gone, and with them the third paper. The old practical scheme, with its separate internal assessment and group project, has been replaced by a single scientific investigation assessed against four criteria worth six marks each. A tutor working from the old structure will spend your money teaching a shape that no longer exists.

The second test is about level. Higher Level physics is not Standard Level with harder questions: additional content sits inside the themes, most visibly in fields, and a tutor comfortable at Standard Level may be genuinely out of their depth at Higher. Ask directly which level they have taught, in which theme, and how recently. A straight answer is worth more than a confident general one.

The third test is about the investigation. Ask what the tutor will not do with it. The right answer arrives immediately and is specific: no design, no data, no analysis, no writing, no editing that changes authorship. A provider who hesitates, or who offers to help produce a report, is offering something that puts an IB registration at risk. Research for these pages found a Dubai provider selling completed Internal Assessments outright, which is malpractice under IB rules and falls on the candidate rather than the seller.

02

The five themes, and what Higher Level adds inside each

Theme A, space, time and motion, covers kinematics, forces, momentum and energy, extended at Higher Level into rigid body mechanics and relativity. Theme B, the particulate nature of matter, holds thermal physics, the gas laws and electric circuits. Theme C, wave behaviour, covers simple harmonic motion, wave models, superposition, standing waves and the Doppler effect. Theme D, fields, treats gravitational, electric and magnetic fields together with potential and induction. Theme E, nuclear and quantum physics, covers atomic structure, decay, fission, fusion and quantum ideas.

The structural point for a parent is that Higher Level content sits inside the themes rather than beside them. There is no separate Higher Level section a student can skip to. That changes how support should be sequenced: a Higher Level student weak in theme A mechanics will struggle in theme D fields, because the energy and potential reasoning carries straight across. A tutor who treats the themes as independent modules will produce sessions that each make sense and a student who cannot connect them.

Theme D is where the difference between a competent physicist and a competent IB physics teacher shows most clearly. Fields, potential and induction are taught in many curricula with different emphases and different notation, and the Diploma expects a particular treatment of field and potential gradients and a particular style of explanation. A tutor from another system will teach the physics correctly and the answers wrongly, and the student will not know which part was the problem.

One practical note for Al Warqa families: schools do not all move through the themes in the same order. Before the first session, ask the school which theme is current and which comes next. A tutor consolidating this week's content is worth considerably more than one running a parallel course that arrives at fields three months after the class did.

Papers, weightings and what each one rewards

Both levels sit two written papers plus the investigation. Paper 1 is worth thirty-six per cent and comes in two parts: a multiple-choice section and a data-based and experimental section. Paper 2 is worth forty-four per cent and carries the structured and extended-response questions. The scientific investigation is the remaining twenty per cent. Higher Level papers are longer than Standard Level ones, and the weightings are the same at both levels.

The split matters because the two parts of Paper 1 reward different preparation entirely. The multiple-choice section rewards breadth and speed, and is improved by wide question practice rather than by deep study of any theme. The data-based and experimental section rewards exactly the skills most schools have least time to drill: reading a table, spotting a controlled variable, identifying a source of systematic error, and interpreting a graph that has been linearised.

Paper 2 is where command terms decide the grade. A student who writes a paragraph when asked to state has lost time they needed later in the paper; a student who writes a sentence when asked to explain has lost the marks outright. This is not a knowledge problem and it responds to a term of enforcement rather than to more content. It is also entirely visible on a marked script, which is why two marked papers are the first thing worth sending.

A caution about dates rather than papers. Secondary sources circulate IB examination and results dates, but ibo.org blocks automated access and no IB session date in this project has been confirmed from the IB itself. UAE schools sit the May session. Any specific date your family acts on should come from the school's IB coordinator or from ibo.org directly, not from a tutoring page, and that includes this one.

The scientific investigation, criterion by criterion

Twenty per cent of the physics grade sits in one report, assessed against four criteria each worth six marks, for twenty-four in total: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The student designs the investigation, carries it out, analyses the data and writes the report. Knowing that the four criteria carry equal weight changes how time is spent, because students overwhelmingly over-invest in the practical work and under-invest in evaluation, which is worth exactly as much.

Research design is where most Al Warqa students lose marks, and the cause is almost always scope. A question that cannot produce enough data points, or whose independent variable cannot be varied meaningfully with available equipment, caps the mark before the first measurement is taken. This is also the only criterion that is cheap to fix and impossible to fix late: once the data is collected, a badly scoped question stays badly scoped.

Data analysis rewards correct processing with uncertainties carried through, and graphs that are genuinely interrogated rather than merely drawn. Conclusion rewards an interpretation that engages with accepted physics and with the actual data rather than with what the student hoped to see. Evaluation rewards honest identification of methodological weaknesses and realistic improvements, and it is routinely treated as a closing formality by students who have just spent ten hours on the experiment.

The boundary on support is firm and worth stating in full, because this is the part of the market where providers misbehave. A tutor may teach the four criteria in the examiner's wording, explain what twenty-four marks are made of, question whether a research question can produce analysable data, teach uncertainty propagation and graph technique, and comment on a draft the student has written. No tutor at IB Gram designs an investigation, supplies or processes data, writes a section, or edits until the authorship changes. The report carries the student's own declaration.

Where physics marks actually go in Al Warqa scripts

  • Uncertainty losses of one or two marks spread across every data question
  • Gradients counted in grid squares instead of read from the scale
  • Error bars drawn and then ignored when extracting a gradient
  • Command terms treated as interchangeable on extended responses
  • A mathematics gap presenting as a physics problem

Uncertainties first, because they are examined everywhere rather than in one place. Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, propagation through products and powers, and uncertainty in a gradient. A student who has never been taught this systematically loses one or two marks on nearly every data question across both papers, and the total is large enough to move a grade while being invisible on any single question.

Graphs second. Gradients measured by counting grid squares rather than reading axis values. Axes without units. Lines of best fit forced through the origin because it feels right. Error bars omitted, or drawn and then ignored when the gradient is extracted. Linearising a relationship so that a straight-line graph can be used at all, which is a specific technique and not an obvious one. All of this is teachable in a handful of sessions and most of it is never taught deliberately.

Command terms third. The extended-response questions on Paper 2 reward a particular shape of answer for each command, and students who have not been shown the difference write what they know rather than what was asked. Explain requires a mechanism; describe requires observable features; outline requires brevity. A term of enforcement with a marked script each week fixes this more reliably than any amount of content revision.

Fourth and least discussed: the mathematics. Higher Level Physics assumes comfort with logarithms, trigonometry and rearranging multi-variable relationships, and a student taking Applications and Interpretation mathematics alongside it sometimes meets a genuine gap. It presents as a physics problem and is not one. Identifying it early saves months of the wrong kind of tutoring, and it is the kind of thing a marked script reveals immediately.

06

Availability, honestly: how long a physics match actually takes

Higher Level Physics is one of the narrower specialisms in this market, and claiming instant availability would be dishonest. For an Al Warqa family the realistic pattern is this: Standard Level Physics is usually matched within a few days. Higher Level Physics takes a little longer, often up to a week, because the pool of tutors genuinely comfortable with theme D at Higher Level is smaller than the pool who teach physics.

Where a specialist is not free, there are three honest responses and we use all three. Give a date rather than a reassurance, so a family can decide whether to wait. Offer a named alternative where one genuinely helps, such as a Chemistry or Mathematics specialist for a block on uncertainties, graph technique and data analysis, which transfer directly and which many physics students need more than they need theme content. Or decline, which is the right answer when neither applies.

There is a disclosure that belongs here too. Where no UAE-based specialist covers a requirement, the match may be a specialist elsewhere teaching at Gulf Standard Time. That is said before anything is booked rather than discovered later, and it changes nothing about the delivery because the delivery was never going to be in-person in this country. Two competitor pages researched for this project route UAE parents to non-UAE phone numbers without saying so, which is the version of this we are trying not to be.

Finally, the eligibility constraint that reduces apparent supply. A teacher cannot be paid to tutor students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit carries a code of conduct barring service to students affiliated with the tutor's own school. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff are reported to prohibit it explicitly. So the physics teacher at your child's school in Festival City is not an option, however convenient it would be.

How practical physics works when the lessons are online

  • Practical work stays at school, with the school's equipment and supervision
  • Research question pressure-tested before equipment is booked
  • Uncertainty propagation and graph work taught on the student's own data
  • Paper 1B data-based questions suit a shared screen and a mark scheme

The question deserves a direct answer rather than reassurance. The practical work for the scientific investigation happens at school, with the school's equipment and under the school's supervision, which is where it belongs and where the student's authorship is visible. Nothing about online tutoring changes that, and no tutor should be involved in collecting the data.

What online support does well is everything around the practical. Pressure-testing the research question before the equipment is booked, so the design can actually produce analysable data. Teaching uncertainty propagation on the student's own measurements. Working through the graph: linearising the relationship, plotting with error bars, extracting a gradient with its uncertainty, and interrogating what the gradient means physically. Then reading the four criteria alongside the student's own draft and asking the questions that produce a real evaluation.

The data-based and experimental section of Paper 1 is, if anything, better taught remotely than in a laboratory. It is a paper exercise: a table, a graph, a described method, and questions about controlled variables, systematic error and interpretation. Working through those with a shared screen and a mark scheme open is precisely the right setting, and it is the section schools have least time to drill because a class of twenty in a laboratory is doing something else.

Where a student genuinely needs hands-on demonstration to understand a concept, the honest position is that online support is a partial fit and the school laboratory is the better place for it. Saying that costs us the occasional enquiry. It is better than taking money for an arrangement that was never going to deliver what the family was imagining, which is a pattern this market has rather too much of.

From MYP Sciences or IGCSE Physics into the Diploma

Two different students arrive in Diploma Physics in Al Warqa, and they need different things. The MYP student has been marked against four criteria, two of which, inquiring and designing and processing and evaluating, are direct ancestors of the Diploma investigation's research design and data analysis criteria. If those were weak in MYP 5, they will be weak in the investigation, and that is the single most predictable and cheapest problem to address early in this subject.

The IGCSE student arrives from Cambridge 0625 or Pearson 4PH1 with a different profile: strong recall, solid calculation, comfortable with structured questions, and no experience of extended written explanation or of designing an investigation from a blank page. Four to eight weeks of focused work usually covers the gap, provided somebody names it. Left unnamed, it shows up as a disappointing first Diploma report that everybody attributes to the course being harder.

A third arrival pattern matters in this community because of the local school mix. Students coming from CBSE physics often have stronger algebraic manipulation and less experience of uncertainty treatment and of writing explanations to a command term. That is a specific, short piece of work, and it is wasted effort to treat it as a general transition difficulty requiring a year of weekly support.

In all three cases the diagnosis comes from marked work rather than from the curriculum the student came from. Two scripts from the first Diploma term show whether the issue is content, uncertainties, graphs, command terms or mathematics, and each of those is a different and much shorter purchase than the open-ended weekly arrangement families usually start with.

Where we tutor

Al Warqa and where physics teaching actually lives

Each note says what the area contributes to the supply of IB physics teaching, which is the question behind a near-me search even when it is not asked that way.

Al Warqa'a 1 to 5

No IB school inside the community and a resident teaching population weighted towards CBSE and British curricula. Excellent physics teachers, trained on different syllabuses and different assessment.

Al Qusais

The nearest dense school cluster and the nearest dense teacher population, again largely CBSE and British. Ten to fifteen minutes away and still unlikely to produce somebody teaching the current IB guide.

Mirdif

Uptown International School runs the IB continuum, so this is the closest genuine IB physics teaching. Staff there cannot be paid to tutor their own enrolled students, which removes most of the apparent advantage.

Dubai Festival City

Deira International School and Universal American School carry Diploma cohorts. Same constraint applies, and the return drive across the creek at six in the evening is why in-home arrangements here are fragile.

Dubai Academic City

University campuses and Dubai English Speaking College. A real source of physics graduates for budget-tier support, and a thin source of people who know the Diploma investigation criteria.

Dubai Silicon Oasis

Engineers and technical graduates in quantity. Strong on the physics, weak on the assessment, which is exactly the mismatch that produces pleasant sessions and an unchanged grade.

Al Mizhar and Al Khawaneej

Villa communities east of Al Warqa with the same shortage of resident IB physics teaching and the same reason to match on syllabus rather than on distance.

Nad Al Hamar

Quick access to Ras Al Khor Road and almost no resident Diploma-level science teaching. Convenient geographically, irrelevant to the actual constraint.

School ecosystem

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Apply the thirty-second test

Ask any prospective tutor which theme contains fields, how many written papers there are at Higher Level, and what the four investigation criteria are called. Somebody teaching this course answers instantly. Somebody mentioning options or a third paper is describing a syllabus your child is not sitting.

  2. 02

Confirm the level and the current theme

Higher or Standard, and which theme the school is teaching now and next. A tutor consolidating this week's content is worth more than one running a parallel course that reaches fields three months after the class did.

  3. 03

    Send two marked physics scripts

Recent and annotated. Uncertainty losses, graph technique, command-term faults and a hidden mathematics gap are all visible within minutes, and each points to a different and shorter piece of work than open-ended weekly support.

  4. 04

Take the free trial and get an estimate

The trial should end with a named weakness, the reason marks are lost there, and an estimate in weeks. Run it at the hour you intend to keep, which for most Al Warqa addresses is 17:15 or later on a weeknight.

  5. 05

Book the investigation block before the first deadline

Twenty per cent of the grade, four criteria, twenty-four marks, and a research question that cannot be rescued once the data is collected. The block belongs before the school's first internal deadline, while scope can still change.

The technique marks treated as the priority

Uncertainties and graph work are examined across every paper and drilled least at school. A block on propagation, linearising and gradient extraction is usually worth more per hour than any amount of theme revision.

A firm line on the investigation

We teach the four criteria, pressure-test the research question and comment on the student's own draft. No tutor here designs the investigation, supplies or processes data, writes a section, or edits until authorship changes.

No unverified IB dates published

ibo.org blocks automated access, so no IB session or results date in this project is confirmed from the IB itself. UAE schools sit the May session; any date you act on should come from your school's IB coordinator or ibo.org directly.

Availability stated before you book

Standard Level is usually matched within days, Higher Level can take a week, and theme D at Higher Level is narrower still. You get a date, a named alternative, or an honest decline rather than a reassurance.

Online one-to-one, with scripts annotated live

Al Warqa physics lessons run one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with the student's own graphs and working marked up against a scheme. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that is an India-only service.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Warqa: your questions answered

Is there an IB physics tutor near me in Al Warqa who teaches Higher Level?+

Within a short drive, very probably not. Al Warqa has no IB school, the surrounding schools in Al Warqa'a and Al Qusais are largely CBSE and British, and the nearest Diploma physics teaching sits in Mirdif and Festival City twenty to thirty minutes away. Teachers at those schools cannot be paid to tutor their own enrolled students. Matching by level and theme over live video reaches a far deeper pool than any radius drawn around this community, which is why availability rather than distance is the right filter.

How do I tell whether a physics tutor knows the current IB syllabus?+

Ask three questions. Which theme contains fields? How many written papers are there at Higher Level? What are the four scientific investigation criteria called? A tutor currently teaching this course answers instantly: theme D, two papers, and research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. One who reaches for topic numbers, mentions the optional units, or describes a third paper is describing the previous structure. Thirty seconds of questions tells you more than any list of qualifications.

What are the five themes in IB Physics?+

Theme A, space, time and motion, covering kinematics, forces, momentum and energy. Theme B, the particulate nature of matter, covering thermal physics, gas laws and circuits. Theme C, wave behaviour, covering simple harmonic motion, superposition, standing waves and the Doppler effect. Theme D, fields, covering gravitational, electric and magnetic fields with potential and induction. Theme E, nuclear and quantum physics. Higher Level content sits inside each theme rather than in a separate section, which is why sequencing support matters.

What is the scientific investigation worth on an Al Warqa student's physics grade?+

Twenty per cent, from a single report assessed against four criteria worth six marks each, for twenty-four in total: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Because the four carry equal weight, time should be distributed accordingly, and students almost always over-invest in the practical work and under-invest in evaluation. A badly scoped research question caps the mark before the first measurement, which is why the design conversation has to happen before data collection rather than after.

Where do IB Physics students lose the most marks?+

Uncertainties, because they are examined everywhere rather than as a topic: one or two marks lost on nearly every data question adds up to a grade while remaining invisible on any single answer. Then graph technique, especially gradients counted in grid squares instead of read from axis values, and error bars drawn and then ignored. Then command terms on extended responses, where explain, describe and outline each demand a different answer shape. All three are visible on a marked script within minutes.

Can a tutor help with my child's physics investigation?+

Within firm limits. A tutor may teach the four criteria in the examiner's wording, explain what the twenty-four marks are made of, question whether a research question can produce analysable data, teach uncertainty propagation and graph technique on the student's own measurements, and comment on a draft the student has written. No tutor should design the investigation, supply or process data, write a section, or edit until authorship changes. The report carries the student's declaration, and a malpractice finding falls on them.

How does practical physics work if lessons are online?+

The practical work stays at school with the school's equipment and supervision, which is where the student's authorship is visible and where it belongs. Online support covers everything around it: pressure-testing the research question before equipment is booked, teaching uncertainty propagation on the student's own data, linearising the relationship and extracting a gradient with its uncertainty, then reading the criteria alongside their draft. The data-based section of Paper 1 is a paper exercise and is arguably better taught on a shared screen than in a laboratory.

Does Higher Level Physics need a different tutor from Standard Level?+

It is genuinely different rather than merely longer. Additional content sits inside each theme, most visibly in fields, and the papers are longer at the same weightings. The practical consequence for tutoring is that a tutor comfortable at Standard Level may be out of their depth at Higher, particularly in theme D. Ask directly which level they have taught, in which theme, and how recently. A straight answer is worth more than a confident general one about physics.

My child moved from IGCSE Physics and the first Diploma report was poor. Why?+

Usually a predictable gap rather than the course being harder. A Cambridge 0625 Extended or Pearson 4PH1 candidate arrives with strong recall and calculation and no experience of extended written explanation or of designing an investigation from a blank page. Four to eight weeks of focused work normally covers it. Left unnamed, it presents as a general struggle and gets treated with a year of weekly support when what was needed was command-term work and one investigation conversation.

Could the real problem be maths rather than physics?+

Often, and it is rarely identified. Higher Level Physics assumes comfort with logarithms, trigonometry and rearranging multi-variable relationships. A student taking Applications and Interpretation mathematics alongside it sometimes meets a genuine gap that presents as a physics weakness. A marked script shows it quickly: the physics reasoning is sound and the algebra breaks. Treating it as physics means months of the wrong tutoring, which is why the first session should start from scripts rather than from a description.

How long does it take to find a Higher Level physics tutor for an Al Warqa student?+

Standard Level is usually matched within a few days. Higher Level often takes up to a week, and theme D at Higher Level is narrower still. Where nobody suitable is free, you get a date rather than a reassurance, so you can decide whether to wait. Sometimes the better answer is a block on uncertainties, graphs and data analysis with a Chemistry or Mathematics specialist, which transfers directly. Where neither works, declining is the honest response.

Can my child's own physics teacher tutor them privately?+

No. A teacher cannot be paid to provide private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit carries a code of conduct barring service to students affiliated with the tutor's own school. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff are reported to prohibit it explicitly, though the current policy wording should be verified at the source. However convenient it would be, it is not an available option and should not be arranged.

When are the IB Physics exams, and can you tell us the dates?+

UAE schools sit the May session. Beyond that, we will not publish specific dates, and you should be wary of any page that does. ibo.org returns an error to automated access, so no IB session or results date in this project has been confirmed from the IB itself, and secondary sources disagree. Get the dates from your school's IB coordinator or from ibo.org directly. A wrong date on a tutoring page is the kind of error a family acts on, which makes it worse than no information.

Should we buy weekly physics support or a short technique block?+

It depends on what the marked scripts show. If the content is understood and the losses are in uncertainties, graphs and command terms, a six to eight session technique block is the highest-yield purchase in the subject and has a clear end date. If the content itself is thin, weekly support moving with the school's scheme of work is the right arrangement, and it should start in the first term of Year 12 because Higher Level depth in fields assumes earlier themes are secure.

Test the tutor in thirty seconds, then send two scripts

Ask which theme contains fields, how many papers there are at Higher Level, and what the four investigation criteria are called. Then send two recently marked physics scripts and tell us the level and the current theme. The free trial lesson will tell you whether the marks are going on uncertainties, graph technique, command terms, content or mathematics, and roughly how many weeks the specific repair takes. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. Nothing is promised about a grade, no IB dates are published unverified, and nobody travels to a UAE address because we do not offer that here.
