IB MYP Tutor in Al Warqa

Hiring an IB MYP tutor in Al Warqa is a five-year spending decision disguised as a single lesson. The Middle Years Programme has no public examination for most students, so families cannot benchmark progress and tend to buy support reactively, year after year, from MYP 1 through to the Personal Project. This page prices the whole run: what a criterion-led subject actually needs, which years repay the money and which do not, and where Al Warqa households routinely overpay.

  • Criterion-level coaching, not generic content revision
  • Personal Project supervision inside the academic-honesty line
  • Year-by-year spend map from MYP 1 to MYP 5
  • First session at no charge, with a written diagnosis

Why MYP tutoring costs more than it should, and how to stop that

Middle Years Programme tutoring is bought differently from IGCSE tutoring, and that difference is expensive. An IGCSE parent buys a tutor for a known examination with a known date. An MYP parent buys a tutor because a report arrived with a 5 on it and nobody in the house can say whether 5 is acceptable. Without an external benchmark, the arrangement tends to continue indefinitely. We meet Al Warqa families who have paid for weekly support in the same subject for three consecutive years with no mechanism for deciding when to stop.

At the rates Dubai providers publish, a weekly session with a qualified online tutor runs AED 150 to 300 an hour, which is AED 600 to 1,200 a month. Repeat that across two subjects for the five years of the programme and the arithmetic reaches a figure most parents have never totalled. The point is not that it is too much money. The point is that MYP spending rarely has an exit condition attached, and spending without an exit condition is the most reliable way to waste it.

The second structural reason MYP tutoring misfires is that the marks are not content marks. Each subject is assessed against four criteria, lettered A to D, each scored out of eight, and each describing a skill rather than a body of knowledge. A science criterion asks whether the student can design a controlled investigation; a mathematics criterion asks whether they can communicate a solution clearly; an individuals and societies criterion asks whether sources were evaluated for bias. A tutor who spends an hour revising the content of the unit may leave every one of those strands untouched.

This is why a middling MYP report so often coexists with a child who clearly knows the material. The grade is held down by one criterion, usually the same one term after term, and nobody has named it. Diagnosing which letter is the problem takes a single session with the marked task sheet in hand. It is also, in our experience of Al Warqa families, the cheapest intervention available in the entire programme, because once a student understands what criterion C is asking for, they can usually supply it.

Al Warqa sits among large eastern-suburb cohorts, and that shapes the specific gap here. In a subject group where a teacher writes criterion-level feedback for well over a hundred students, the feedback that arrives is necessarily brief. Parents read a row of numbers out of eight and a sentence of comment. What is missing is somebody translating that into an instruction the student can act on this week. That translation is a short job, not a five-year subscription.

Everything below is priced, with the source for each band, and written for the Middle Years Programme specifically rather than borrowed from a Diploma page. Lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE addresses; visiting tutors are a service we operate only in India, and the in-home comparison further down shows what the Dubai market charges for that and what it buys.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The Middle Years Programme runs five years and changes character twice inside them. What a tutor should be doing in MYP 2 bears little resemblance to MYP 5, and paying the same rate for the same shape of lesson throughout is the commonest budgeting error we see in the eastern suburbs.

MYP 1-3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Middle Years Programme, early years

Eight subject groups, interdisciplinary units, and the first exposure to criterion-based marking. Tutoring here should be rare and short. The useful purchase is not weekly subject support but two or three sessions teaching a student how to read a criterion descriptor and write to it, because that skill transfers across all eight groups and lasts the full five years. Families who buy weekly content tutoring at this stage are usually paying to fix something that is not broken.

Dubai schools vary widely in how much criterion-level feedback they return at this stage, and in the largest Al Warqa and Al Qusais cohorts it is necessarily brief. Ask to see a marked task sheet with the strand descriptors attached before deciding any tutoring is needed at all.

MYP 4-5Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Middle Years Programme, upper years

Subject choice narrows, the mathematics splits into standard and extended pathways in most schools, and grades start to carry weight for Diploma Programme course selection. This is where tutoring money earns its keep, particularly in mathematics and sciences, because the criteria now demand sustained independent work. A weekly slot in one or two subjects is defensible here in a way it is not three years earlier.

In Dubai, upper-MYP grades feed directly into whether a student is accepted onto Higher Level courses in DP1 at their own school. Al Warqa families moving a child between an IB continuum school and a British-curriculum school at this point should expect the entire assessment logic to change, not just the timetable.

MYP PPAge 15-16 · MYP 5

The MYP Personal Project

An independent project completed in the final MYP year, assessed against criteria covering planning, applying skills and reflecting. Students lose marks on the process documentation rather than on the product, because the process journal is written retrospectively in a weekend. A defined block of four to six supervision sessions, spread across the year rather than clustered at the end, is the single most cost-effective MYP purchase.

The project is supervised by a member of staff at the school, and an outside tutor works alongside that supervision rather than replacing it. A tutor may question, challenge and give feedback on the student's own work. Writing any part of the project or the journal would breach IB academic-honesty rules and put the student at risk.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

The step into the Diploma Programme

The transition is the point where MYP spending either pays off or reveals what was skipped. Students arrive in DP1 from the MYP with strong research and communication habits and, frequently, a gap in procedural fluency because the MYP rewarded explanation over drill. The fix is a short bridging block in the summer before DP1, which costs a fraction of a remedial term in the autumn.

Dubai students entering the Diploma also pick up Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies obligations that KHDA requires of all private schools in the emirate regardless of curriculum, so the DP1 week is tighter than the course list suggests.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The Middle Years Programme organises learning into eight subject groups rather than discrete examined subjects. Below is each group with the criterion that most often holds an Al Warqa student's grade down, because that is where tutoring money should go.

Language and Literature

MYP 1-5

Analysing is the criterion that stalls. Students summarise the text and then offer an opinion, where the strand asks for the effect of a specific choice by the writer on a specific reader. Producing text and using language are usually sound; the analytical strand is the one costing marks, and it responds quickly to marked paragraphs.

Language Acquisition

Phases 1-6

Phase placement matters more than effort. A student working hard in a phase above their comfort will score low on comprehension strands regardless of input. Tutoring is worth buying only after the phase has been checked with the school, which is a free conversation that families skip.

Individuals and Societies

MYP 1-5

Investigating and the evaluation of sources carry the losses. Students describe what a source says rather than what it is worth, and never state provenance, purpose or limitation. This is a technique gap, fixable in a handful of marked tasks, and expensive to leave until MYP 5.

Sciences

MYP 1-5

Inquiring and designing is the criterion that sinks otherwise capable students. A hypothesis with no reasoning behind it, variables unnamed, and a method nobody could repeat will score poorly even where the practical work was executed well. The strand rewards planning documentation, which is teachable.

Mathematics

Standard and Extended

Communicating is where marks vanish. Correct answers presented without working, notation, units or a line of reasoning cannot earn the upper bands of the criterion. The content is rarely the issue in Al Warqa cohorts; the presentation of reasoning almost always is.

Design

MYP 1-5

The design cycle is the whole assessment: inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, evaluating. Students build the product and neglect the documentation, which is where most of the available marks sit. A short block on the cycle is better value than ongoing weekly support.

Arts

Visual and performing

Developing skills and thinking creatively are assessed through the process portfolio rather than the finished piece. Students who perform or paint well and document nothing score in the middle bands, which surprises families every single year.

Physical and Health Education

MYP 1-5

Planning for performance and reflecting on performance are written criteria in a practical subject, and a capable athlete can be marked down for not evidencing either. Worth knowing before a parent concludes the grade reflects ability on the field.

Interdisciplinary units

MYP 1-5

Assessed separately against their own criteria, requiring students to synthesise two subject groups. Marks are lost where the work stays inside one discipline and the synthesis is asserted rather than demonstrated.

Approaches to Learning

Cross-programme

Not graded directly but embedded in every criterion: research skills, self-management, thinking, communication, social skills. Most of what a good MYP tutor actually teaches sits here, which is why the gains show up across several subjects at once rather than in the one you paid for.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three purchase shapes suit the Middle Years Programme, and they cost very different amounts. The mistake is buying the third shape when the first would have done.

The criterion diagnostic: two to three sessions

A short block with the marked task sheets and the subject's criterion descriptors in front of the tutor. The output is a written statement of which letter is holding the grade down and what the student must do differently. At market mid-rates this is a few hundred dirhams once, and for many Al Warqa families it is the whole intervention.

  • Works from the school's own marked tasks, not generic material
  • Names the strand, not just the subject
  • Produces an instruction the student can act on this week
  • Often ends the arrangement rather than beginning one

Personal Project supervision block

Four to six sessions spread across MYP 5, timed to the project milestones rather than bunched before the deadline. The work is process documentation: goal setting, research records, the journal kept as it happens, and the reflection written against the criteria. The tutor questions and gives feedback; the student writes every word of it.

  • Spaced to the school's own milestone calendar
  • Journal built contemporaneously, not reconstructed
  • Reflection written against published criteria language
  • Strict academic-honesty line stated to the student at session one

Weekly subject support in the upper years

A standing hour in one or two subjects through MYP 4 and 5, usually mathematics, sciences or language and literature. Defensible at this stage because the criteria now require sustained independent work and the grades affect Diploma course access. At published Dubai rates this runs AED 600 to 1,200 a month per subject.

  • One or two subjects at most, chosen on marked evidence
  • Reviewed every six weeks with a stated condition for stopping
  • Includes bridging work towards Diploma Programme demands
  • Not recommended below MYP 4 except for a specific diagnosed gap

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Warqa

01

What an MYP tutor in Al Warqa costs, and why the bill behaves differently

  • Budget online tuition in Dubai starts around AED 45-65 an hour
  • Qualified online subject tutoring: AED 150-300 an hour
  • Specialist IB support: AED 200-450 and above
  • Premium named or examiner-led tutors reach AED 650 and are rarely needed in the MYP

The hourly rates in Dubai do not change because a programme is called the Middle Years Programme. Reading across the providers that publish figures, in October 2026 the market ran from AED 45 at the budget end to AED 650 for premium named tutors, with qualified subject tutors at AED 150 to 300 and specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above. What changes is the duration of the commitment. An IGCSE arrangement ends with the June series. An MYP arrangement has no natural end at all.

That is the hidden cost. Two subjects supported weekly at mid-market rates is roughly AED 1,200 to 2,400 a month, and across five years of the programme the total is a figure most families have never written down. We are not arguing that the money is badly spent in every case; we are arguing that it should be spent against a stated condition. Before you begin, write down what has to change for the sessions to stop. If you cannot write it, the diagnosis is not finished.

The second difference is what the hour should contain. In the MYP, a session spent revising the content of the current unit frequently leaves all four assessment criteria untouched, because the criteria measure skills. A session spent on one criterion with the marked task sheet open can move a grade without covering any new content at all. The rate card is the same. The value is entirely in which of those two sessions you bought.

Five years priced out: where MYP money repays and where it does not

Treating the Middle Years Programme as one undifferentiated block of tutoring years is how households end up with the figures in the table below. The programme changes shape twice, and the right spend in MYP 2 is close to zero while the right spend in MYP 5 is concentrated and specific. Mapping it year by year turns a vague monthly outgoing into a plan with start and end points.

The early years repay short, skill-focused intervention and punish standing weekly slots. An eleven-year-old who has just met criterion marking for the first time needs somebody to explain what a descriptor is and how to write to one. That is two or three sessions. What they do not need is a tutor re-teaching the content of units their school is teaching perfectly well, which is the arrangement most families drift into because it is the one that is easy to buy.

The upper years invert that. By MYP 4 the criteria demand independent investigation, sustained written reasoning and documented process, and the grades begin to decide which Diploma courses a student can access at their own school. A weekly slot in one or two subjects is defensible here. So is a Personal Project block in MYP 5 and a bridging block in the summer before DP1, which is the cheapest insurance available against a remedial autumn term.

The arithmetic in the table uses the published mid-market band of AED 150 to 300 an hour throughout, so you can substitute your own rate and recalculate. What it is intended to show is not a recommended total but the difference between a planned five years and an unplanned one.

Why content tutoring is usually the wrong purchase in the MYP

  • Ask for the marked task sheet with the strand descriptors attached
  • Identify the repeated low letter before buying any hours
  • Criterion skills transfer across subject groups; content does not
  • A confident child with an unchanged report means the wrong strand was taught

A Middle Years Programme grade is built from four criterion marks, each out of eight, each describing a skill. In sciences the strands cover inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. In mathematics they cover knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. None of those is a list of facts. A student can know everything in the unit and score in the middle bands on three of the four.

This is why the familiar Dubai tutoring product — an hour re-explaining the current topic — so often produces a confident child and an unchanged report. The hour was spent on knowing and understanding, which was already the student's strongest strand. The grade was being held down by communicating, which nobody looked at. Parents then conclude that more hours are needed, and the spending escalates in exactly the wrong direction.

The fix is cheap and begins with a document. Every MYP task comes with the criterion strands and the band descriptors the teacher marked against. Put that sheet in front of a tutor who knows the programme and the diagnosis takes most of one session. In the large eastern-suburb cohorts, where written feedback per student is necessarily short, that translation step is the whole of what an outside tutor usefully adds.

There is a second-order benefit worth paying for. Criterion skills transfer. A student who learns to evidence a method in sciences will evidence a method in design, and a student who learns to communicate reasoning in mathematics will communicate it in individuals and societies. One strand properly fixed tends to move several reports, which is not something content tutoring can claim.

04

What each criterion is worth, and what a low one looks like

Every MYP subject group is assessed against four criteria lettered A to D, each marked from zero to eight, giving thirty-two marks that the school converts to a one-to-seven grade using published boundaries. The letters mean different things in different subject groups, which is why a parent cannot read across from one report line to another, and why a tutor needs the subject's own descriptors rather than a general sense of the programme.

The practical value of knowing this is diagnostic. A student scoring sixes and sevens on criterion A and threes on criterion C is not a weak student; they are a student with one unaddressed skill. In our experience of eastern-suburb cohorts the recurring culprits are narrow: evidencing a method in sciences, communicating reasoning in mathematics, evaluating sources in individuals and societies, and analysing effect rather than summarising content in language and literature. Ask for the criterion marks themselves at every reporting cycle, not only the converted one-to-seven grade. Some Dubai schools publish the A to D breakdown only when a parent requests it, and without it a family is negotiating about a single number that hides the four marks behind it.

The table below sets out, for the subject groups we are asked about most from Al Warqa, the strand that most commonly holds a grade down and what a tutor should actually be doing about it. It is deliberately specific. A plan that says more practice is not a plan, and at AED 150 to 300 an hour it is not a plan worth paying for either.

MYP CRITERIA BY SUBJECT GROUP - THE STRAND THAT USUALLY COSTS THE GRADE

The Personal Project: the MYP 5 block worth paying for

The Personal Project is the one place in the Middle Years Programme where a defined block of paid supervision reliably returns more than it costs. The reason is structural: the project is assessed on process rather than on the finished product, and the process evidence is the part students neglect. A beautifully built outcome with a journal written in one weekend scores poorly, and students are genuinely surprised by that every year.

What the assessment rewards is a clear goal with criteria for success stated at the outset, a research record that shows how decisions were made, evidence of the skills applied along the way, and a reflection that measures the outcome against the criteria the student set. All four of those are documentation habits. They cost almost nothing to build if the support is spread across the year and a great deal to reconstruct if it is not.

The academic-honesty line here is absolute and we state it to the student in the first session. A tutor may ask questions, challenge a weak goal, point out that a journal entry asserts something it does not evidence, and give feedback on the student's own writing. A tutor may not write the project, draft the journal, or edit the reflection to completion. Under IB rules that is malpractice and the consequences fall on the student, not on the tutor. Any provider offering to produce the work should be declined on that basis alone.

Practically, four to six sessions placed at the school's own milestones — goal setting, mid-project review, draft reflection, final check — is the shape that works. Spread that way it is a modest one-off cost against a component that appears on the MYP record and, more usefully, teaches the independent-project habits the Diploma Programme will demand twice over in the Extended Essay.

06

Where Al Warqa families overspend on the Middle Years Programme

  • Review every six weeks against a marked task, not against a feeling
  • Diagnose each child separately before buying for all of them
  • Premium examiner rates buy little in an internally assessed programme
  • Bridge to the Diploma in summer rather than repair it in autumn

The first overspend is the standing slot nobody reviews. An arrangement begun in MYP 2 because a report looked disappointing can still be running in MYP 5, at AED 600 to 1,200 a month, with no mechanism for deciding whether it is working. The remedy is a date in the calendar every six weeks and a marked piece of work to look at. If the strand that prompted the arrangement is no longer the low one, the arrangement has done its job.

The second is buying for the wrong child in the house. MYP reports are harder to read than percentage reports, and anxiety transfers easily from one sibling to another. We see households supporting three children weekly when the marked evidence justified it for one. Ask for the diagnostic on each child separately, and be prepared for the answer that two of them do not need anything.

The third is paying premium rates for a programme with no external examination. An examiner-led tutor at AED 650 an hour has expertise in marking external papers. The MYP, for most Dubai students, is marked internally by their own teachers against published criteria. The expertise that matters is familiarity with those criteria and with how the school applies them, which sits comfortably in the AED 150 to 300 band.

The fourth is leaving the Diploma transition to chance and then paying for a remedial autumn. Students arriving in DP1 from the MYP typically bring strong research and communication habits and thinner procedural fluency, because the programme rewarded explanation over repetition. Six to ten sessions in the summer on the algebra, calculation or essay-timing demands of their intended Higher Level subjects costs a fraction of catching up once DP1 has started.

07

Online, in-home and group support compared for Al Warqa

  • Market in-home rate: AED 180-500 an hour, driving included in the figure
  • Market qualified online rate: AED 150-300 an hour for the same hour of teaching
  • MYP tutor supply in the eastern suburbs is thin, so geography is the wrong filter
  • Criterion work suits a shared screen better than a kitchen table

Parents searching for an MYP tutor in Al Warqa generally picture someone arriving at the villa, so the market position deserves a direct answer. Dubai prices in-home one-to-one visits at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour against AED 150 to 300 for an equivalent qualified tutor working online, and advertised in-home monthly packages of four two-hour sessions have run at AED 1,599 to 1,799. The difference is travel time converted into fee.

For the Middle Years Programme that premium buys less than it does elsewhere, because the tutor pool it restricts you to is already thin. MYP provision in the eastern suburbs is sparser than British-curriculum provision, so the number of tutors who both know criterion marking in a specific subject group and will drive to Al Warqa on a weekday evening is small. Choosing on geography in a thin market means choosing on the wrong variable.

IB Gram does not sell home visits in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE; visiting tutors operate only in India. Sessions for Al Warqa families run one-to-one over live video to Gulf Standard Time, with the student's own marked task sheets shared on screen, which is the format that actually suits criterion work: the descriptor, the marked task and the student's redraft all visible at once. Group classes, meanwhile, suit content revision and cannot do criterion diagnosis at all, so they are a poor substitute for the two-session purchase this page recommends most often.

08

eAssessment, the MYP record and what any of it is worth

Some Dubai schools enter MYP 5 students for IB eAssessment, producing an externally validated MYP Certificate; many do not, and run the programme to its final year assessed entirely internally. Which of those your child's school does changes the shape of MYP 5 completely, and it is worth asking the coordinator directly rather than inferring it. Families who assume there is an external examination and then discover there is not have usually bought tutoring on a false premise. Whichever route the school has taken, get the answer in writing at the start of MYP 4, because the entry decision is made for a whole cohort and is rarely revisited for one student.

Where eAssessment is in play, the preparation resembles conventional examination preparation and the usual rules apply: past material, timing, command language, and the discipline of answering the question asked. Where it is not, the only marks that exist are the ones your child's own teachers award against the published criteria, and the tutoring brief is entirely about meeting those descriptors in the work the school sets.

Either way, the MYP record is not what a university will read. Its value is internal and immediate: it decides which Diploma courses the school will let a student take, and it builds or fails to build the habits the Diploma then tests. That is the honest frame for any spending decision in these five years. Money spent on a habit that carries into DP1 is money that works twice. Money spent to move a single internal grade from a five to a six, with nothing structural changed, works once and then stops.

Where we tutor

Al Warqa and the eastern-suburb MYP catchment

Middle Years Programme provision in this part of Dubai is thinner than British-curriculum provision, so families travel further for it and the catchment stretches wider than for IGCSE. These are the communities our MYP students come from.

Al Warqa 1 to 4

Predominantly villa households, many with children on Indian-curriculum or British routes, so MYP families here are often the only ones on their street dealing with criterion marking and have nobody local to compare notes with.

Mirdif

The nearest substantial IB continuum provision to Al Warqa. A large share of our eastern-suburb MYP enquiries come from this pocket, and the briefs are usually about the Personal Project or upper-MYP mathematics.

Al Mizhar

Longer bus runs and a mixed curriculum picture. Families here more often have siblings on different programmes, which makes a single tutor covering two assessment systems genuinely useful.

Al Khawaneej

Larger plots, longer drives and a noticeable number of students who commute out of the eastern suburbs entirely for IB provision, arriving home well after five.

Nad Al Hamar

Quick access across Ras Al Khor to the central corridor schools, which widens the realistic school choice and therefore the number of assessment calendars we see from one neighbourhood.

Al Qusais

Very large year groups on other curricula, with MYP students in the minority. Criterion-level feedback per student is thinnest where cohorts are biggest, which is the whole argument for an outside reader.

Dubai Silicon Oasis

Apartment and villa mix, with students split across the Silicon Oasis and Mirdif school clusters. Upper-MYP mathematics is the most requested subject from this area.

International City

Cost sensitivity is highest here and the enquiry is usually for a short diagnostic block rather than a standing weekly slot, which is generally the right instinct for the MYP.

Mirdif and Al Mizhar, the continuum provision

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the marked task, not the report card

The report tells us a grade. The marked task sheet, with the criterion strands and band descriptors the teacher used, tells us why. Send one or two of those along with your child's subject group and year, and the diagnosis can start in the first session rather than the third.

  2. 02

A diagnostic session at no cost

The first session is free and is spent naming the strand that is holding the grade down. You receive that in writing. For a meaningful number of Al Warqa families this is also the last session, because the instruction the student needed was a short one and the school is already doing the rest.

  3. 03

Decide the shape before the schedule

A two-session criterion diagnostic, a Personal Project supervision block, and a standing weekly slot in upper MYP are three different purchases at three different prices. We say which one the evidence supports, including when the answer is none of them, and the indicative cost at published market rates.

Write down the condition for stopping

Before the first paid session we agree what has to change for the arrangement to end: a specific criterion mark on a specific kind of task. This is the step that separates a plan from a subscription, and it is the single most useful thing on this page for a family at the start of a five-year programme.

Review every six weeks on marked evidence

At each review we look at marked work and recommend continuing, moving to another subject, or stopping. A tutor who never recommends stopping is not advising you. If the strand that prompted the arrangement is no longer the low one, we will say the work is done.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Criterion-first, not content-first

Sessions work from your child's marked tasks and the subject group's published strand descriptors, because that is what the grade is actually built from. An hour of content revision in the MYP frequently leaves all four assessed skills untouched, which is how families end up paying more for less movement.

A stated exit condition on every arrangement

The Middle Years Programme has no external examination date to end a tutoring arrangement, so we write the ending into the beginning. You will know before the first invoice what has to change for the sessions to stop, which is the discipline this programme lacks by design.

The Personal Project line is drawn out loud

A tutor questions, challenges and gives feedback on your child's own work. We do not write, draft or edit to completion any project, journal or reflection submitted for assessment. Under IB academic-honesty rules the consequences of that fall on the student, and any provider offering it should be refused.

No published syllabus material supplied

Subject guides, criterion documents and assessment material are published by the International Baccalaureate and should be obtained from the organisation or from your child's coordinator. We reference and explain them; we do not reproduce or distribute them.

The permit question answered without evasion

Private tuition in the UAE runs on a MoHRE private tutor work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years. Ask any tutor to show theirs. IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK or Ministry of Education approval and makes no claim to any.

Advice that reduces the invoice

On a page about five years of spending it would be inconsistent to recommend weekly sessions for every child who arrives with a middling report. Where the marked evidence does not support paid support, we say so, and we have ended arrangements on that basis.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Warqa: your questions answered

How much should we budget for MYP tutoring in Al Warqa over the whole programme?+

Less than most families end up spending, if it is planned. At published Dubai rates of AED 150 to 300 an hour, a weekly slot is AED 600 to 1,200 a month per subject. Our recommendation for the eastern suburbs is near-zero standing spend in MYP 1 to 3 beyond a one-off criterion diagnostic, a single weekly subject in MYP 4 and 5 chosen on marked evidence, a Personal Project block of four to six sessions, and a short bridging block before DP1. That shape typically totals a fraction of five unplanned years.

Why did a term of weekly tutoring not change my child's MYP grade?+

Almost always because the hour was spent on the wrong criterion. MYP subjects are marked against four strands, each out of eight, and each one measures a skill rather than a body of knowledge. If the sessions covered content and the grade was being held down by communicating or by inquiring and designing, the report will not move however many hours you buy. Ask what strand each session addressed. If the tutor cannot name one, the diagnosis never happened and you were paying for revision your school had already delivered.

Is it worth paying for MYP support in Year 7 or Year 8?+

Rarely as a standing arrangement. What is worth buying at that age is two or three sessions teaching the student how to read a criterion descriptor and write to it, because that skill applies to all eight subject groups and lasts the full five years. Weekly content tutoring for an eleven-year-old whose school is covering the units competently is the clearest example of MYP overspending we see in Al Warqa households. Keep the money for MYP 4 and 5, where the criteria demand sustained independent work and the grades start to matter.

What does Personal Project supervision cost, and is it a good buy?+

Four to six sessions spread across MYP 5 at mid-market rates comes to roughly AED 600 to 1,800 in total, and it is one of the few MYP purchases we recommend without hesitation. The project is assessed on process, and students lose marks on documentation rather than on the outcome they built. Support spaced across the year builds the journal and the research record as they happen, which costs very little. Reconstructing them in the final fortnight costs a great deal and still scores poorly.

Can a tutor help write my child's Personal Project?+

No, and you should not accept an offer to. A tutor may question a weak goal, point out where a journal entry asserts something it does not evidence, and give feedback on writing the student has produced. Writing, drafting or editing the project to completion is malpractice under IB academic-honesty rules and the consequences fall on the student. Any provider advertising a completed project should be declined on that basis. We state this line to the student directly in the first supervision session so there is no ambiguity later.

Do we need separate tutors for the eight MYP subject groups?+

No, and the question points at the overspending risk in this programme. Much of what a good MYP tutor teaches sits in the approaches-to-learning skills shared across every group: research records, self-management, structuring written reasoning, documenting a process. One tutor working on the recurring low strand will usually move several reports at once. Buy a second subject specialist only where the marked evidence names a specific content gap, not because four of the eight report lines look average.

What is MYP eAssessment and does it change what we should pay for?+

It is the optional externally validated route at the end of MYP 5, leading to an IB MYP Certificate. Some Dubai schools enter candidates and many do not. It changes the brief completely: where eAssessment applies, preparation looks like conventional examination work with timing and command language mattering; where it does not, the only marks that exist are internal ones awarded against published criteria. Ask your child's coordinator which applies before buying anything for MYP 5, because families regularly plan for an examination that is not happening.

Which MYP subject most often needs paid support in the upper years?+

Mathematics, followed by sciences. In mathematics the recurring loss is the communicating criterion: correct answers with no notation, no units and no visible reasoning cannot reach the upper bands. In sciences it is inquiring and designing, where hypotheses arrive without reasoning and variables go unnamed. Both are presentation-of-thinking problems rather than content problems, which is good news for a budget because they respond to a handful of properly marked tasks rather than to a year of lessons.

Is an in-home MYP tutor in Al Warqa worth the extra money?+

The Dubai market charges roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour for in-home visits against AED 150 to 300 for an equivalent qualified tutor online, and the gap is travel priced into the hour. For the Middle Years Programme the premium buys less than usual, because provision in the eastern suburbs is thin and insisting on someone who will drive to Al Warqa narrows an already small pool of tutors who know criterion marking in your child's subject group. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; sessions run over live video to Gulf Standard Time.

How do we know when to stop paying for MYP tutoring?+

Write the condition down before you start. A usable one names a strand and a task type: criterion C at six or above on two consecutive mathematics investigations, for instance. Then review marked work every six weeks against it. Because the MYP has no external examination date, nothing else will end the arrangement for you, and an unreviewed weekly slot can run for years. A tutor who never recommends stopping is selling rather than advising, and that is worth noticing early.

Our two children are in MYP 3 and MYP 5. Should we support both?+

Diagnose them separately and expect different answers. MYP 5 with a Personal Project and Diploma course selection ahead is a reasonable place to spend; MYP 3 with a competent school and no repeated low strand usually is not. Anxiety about one child's report transfers easily to a sibling, and we regularly meet Al Warqa households paying for three weekly slots where the marked evidence supported one. One tutor can cover both children in consecutive sessions if the subject groups are compatible, which reduces switching cost without pretending two children fit in one hour.

Why does my child score highly on criterion A and poorly on criterion C?+

Because those letters measure different things, and your child has one skill and not the other. Criterion A in most subject groups rewards knowing and understanding, which is what traditional schooling trains. The later criteria reward investigation, communication of reasoning, evaluation and reflection, which are taught less explicitly and assessed heavily. A gap of that shape is a good outcome diagnostically: it is narrow, it is nameable, and it is usually fixed by a small number of marked tasks rather than by a change of school or a year of lessons.

Does the MYP record matter to universities later?+

Not directly. What it decides is internal and immediate: which Diploma Programme courses your child's own school will permit them to take, particularly at Higher Level, and how well prepared they are for the independent work the Diploma demands. That is the honest frame for spending in these five years. Money that buys a habit carrying into DP1 — documented research, reasoned written method, a project managed over months — works twice. Money that lifts one internal grade with nothing structural changed works once.

How does the Dubai mandatory-subject requirement affect an MYP week?+

It fills more of it than the subject list suggests. KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with instructional time calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit and separate classes organised for Arab and non-Arab students. An MYP student in Al Warqa therefore carries eight subject groups plus those obligations, and the realistic amount of discretionary evening study time is smaller than parents assume. Plan the week before adding a tutoring slot to it.

What if no MYP specialist is available in our child's subject group?+

We tell you rather than substituting a general tutor and hoping. MYP criterion marking in a specific subject group is a narrower skill than it sounds, and a tutor who does not know the strands will spend the hour on content. If no UAE-based tutor matches, we look across our wider pool, including tutors in India teaching the same programme to Gulf Standard Time. If that still does not produce a match, we say the need is unmet and suggest asking the school coordinator what internal support exists.

Buy the diagnosis, then decide whether to buy anything else

If your child is in the Middle Years Programme at a school near Al Warqa and the reports are not what you hoped, the useful first purchase is not a weekly slot. It is one session with the marked task sheet open, naming the criterion that is holding the grade down and what to do about it this week. Send the subject group, the year and one marked task, and the trial session is at no cost. A meaningful number of families get an answer that costs them nothing further, and on a page about five years of spending that outcome is the point rather than an embarrassment.
