IB MYP Tutor in The Greens

Parents looking for an IB MYP tutor in The Greens usually ask one question first: is there anyone nearby who actually knows this syllabus? The honest answer is that there are far fewer than for IGCSE, because the Middle Years Programme has almost no past papers, is marked against four criteria rather than a percentage, and cannot be taught by someone working from a textbook. This page gives you the questions that separate the two.

  • Criteria named by letter for your child's subject group, before booking
  • No MYP past-paper bank is offered, because almost none exists
  • Free trial lesson first, with no card details taken to book it
  • One-to-one over live video; home visits are an India-only service

IB & IGCSE in The Greens

Why nobody near you seems to know this programme

The scarcity is real and it has a cause. The Middle Years Programme is a five-year framework rather than an examined syllabus. There is no public question bank to work from, no mark scheme to memorise, and no standard textbook that maps onto what a school actually assesses. A tutor who has spent a decade teaching Cambridge IGCSE has nothing transferable except the subject content itself, and in the MYP the subject content is the smaller half of the grade.

What is being assessed instead is four criteria per subject group, each marked on a band from zero to eight. In mathematics those criteria are knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. In sciences they are knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. A student can be fluent in the mathematics and score poorly, because two of the four criteria are not about getting answers right.

That is why the usual Dubai tutoring conversation fails here. A parent reports a grade 4 in MYP 4 sciences. A tutor hears a weak student and offers content revision. The actual problem is often criterion C, processing and evaluating, where the student records data accurately and never evaluates the method. Thirty hours of content teaching will not move that number, and the family will conclude that tutoring does not work when what failed was the diagnosis.

The second reason the programme feels opaque is the grade itself. Criterion levels are added to a total out of thirty-two and converted to a final grade from one to seven using published boundaries, so a child with three strong criteria and one weak one can sit a whole band below where their work feels. Parents reading a report without that mechanism explained cannot tell whether a grade 5 reflects a gap in knowledge or a gap in reflective writing.

Then there is eAssessment, which is optional and which many schools do not enter candidates for at all. Where it does happen it involves on-screen examinations in some subject groups, teacher-moderated ePortfolios in others, and the Personal Project. A family who assumes their child will sit MYP examinations, and a family who assumes they will not, are both sometimes wrong, and the only way to know is to ask the school directly.

This page is written to make you a harder customer. It sets out the criteria by subject group, five questions that reveal within a minute whether a tutor has taught the programme, how criterion levels become a report grade, what may and may not be done on the Personal Project, and what the step into the Diploma actually requires. All IB Gram lessons in the UAE are delivered one-to-one over live video; home visits are a service offered only in India.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Four distinct jobs sit under the phrase MYP tutoring, and they need different people. The year level matters as much as the subject, because what the criteria demand changes substantially between MYP 1 and MYP 5.

MYP1-3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

MYP 1 to 3, the early years

The three years where habits are set rather than grades decided. Criterion-based marking is introduced gradually, approaches-to-learning skills are taught explicitly, and students meet key concepts, related concepts and global contexts for the first time. Support here is usually about study skills and written communication rather than about subject content.

For families in The Greens the useful intervention at this stage is narrow and cheap: teaching a child to read a task sheet, identify which criterion is being assessed and answer that criterion. Students who learn that in MYP 2 stop losing bands in MYP 4 for reasons that have nothing to do with ability.

MYP4-5Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

MYP 4 and 5, the upper years

Two years where the criteria tighten, mathematics splits into standard and extended routes in many schools, and the Personal Project arrives. Report grades here feed subject choices for the Diploma or for a move to another curriculum, so a band lost to weak reflective writing has consequences beyond the report.

This is where almost all MYP tutoring demand in the Emirates Living cluster sits. The common pattern around The Greens is a student performing well on criterion A and losing bands on the investigative and reflective criteria, which is a teachable gap and not a content problem.

PPAges 15-16 · Year 11

The Personal Project in MYP 5

An independent project with a product and a report, assessed in the current guide against three criteria, each marked from zero to eight. Students are assigned a supervisor at school, and that supervision is part of the assessment framework. The project is as much about documenting a process as about the thing produced.

Personal Project enquiries peak in the autumn term in this community, usually when a student has chosen an ambitious product and has not recorded the process behind it. The honest help available is coaching on planning and reflection; the school supervisor remains the person who oversees the work.

IDUAges 11-16 · across MYP 1-5

Interdisciplinary units and the community project

Units that combine two or more subject groups and are assessed against their own interdisciplinary criteria, plus the community project that many schools run in MYP 3 or 4. Both are assessed on synthesis and process rather than on subject recall, which is why strong single-subject students sometimes find them harder than the subjects themselves.

These are the tasks Greens parents most often do not know how to help with, because they look like group work and are marked like research. A single session on how the interdisciplinary criteria differ from the subject criteria is usually enough to change how a student approaches them.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Eight subject groups, plus three things that sit across them. Each group has its own four criteria, which is the detail that decides whether a tutor is useful or merely knowledgeable about the subject.

Language and literature

MYP 1-5

Assessed on analysing, organising, producing text and using language. Students who read widely still lose bands on organising, because the criterion rewards a visible structure rather than good sentences, and on analysing, which asks for the effect of a choice rather than the identification of it.

Language acquisition

MYP 1-5, by phase

Four criteria covering listening, reading, speaking and writing, assessed at a phase level rather than a year level. The phase matters more than the age, and families regularly discover a child has been placed in a phase that no longer matches their fluency in either direction.

Individuals and societies

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating and thinking critically. The critical thinking criterion is where most bands are lost, because it asks for evaluation of a source or an argument and students supply description and context instead.

Sciences

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Two of those four are about the inquiry cycle, so a student who knows the science and writes a thin method or no evaluation sits well below their apparent level.

Mathematics, standard and extended

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Investigating patterns is the criterion that surprises families most: it requires generalising a rule and justifying it, which is closer to proof than to calculation.

Arts

MYP 1-5

Investigating, developing, creating or performing, and evaluating. Three of the four criteria are documentation rather than performance, which means a talented student with a thin process journal scores below a methodical one. This is the clearest example of process being the assessed object.

Physical and health education

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, planning for performance, applying and performing, and reflecting and improving performance. It carries written assessment that parents rarely anticipate, and the planning and reflecting criteria behave like any other written task.

Design

MYP 1-5

Inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution and evaluating. The design cycle is the assessment, so a working product with no documented research and testing cannot score highly. Students used to being graded on outcomes find this counter-intuitive.

Interdisciplinary learning

MYP 1-5

Units combining two or more subject groups, assessed against interdisciplinary criteria on synthesis and reflection rather than subject recall. Strong single-subject students often score lower here than they expect, because the skill being measured is connection rather than knowledge.

Approaches to learning skills

MYP 1-5, across all groups

Thinking, communication, social, self-management and research skills, taught explicitly and embedded in task design. They are not separately graded, but they are what the investigative and reflective criteria actually measure, which makes them the highest-leverage thing a tutor can work on.

The Personal Project

MYP 5

A product and a report assessed in the current guide against three criteria, each from zero to eight, with a school-assigned supervisor. Planning and reflection carry the weight; the product itself is evidence rather than the assessment. A tutor's role is coaching, strictly within the supervision framework.

Arabic and Islamic Education alongside the MYP

MYP 1-5, Dubai requirement

Mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with KHDA requiring separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students because expectations and the language of instruction differ. They sit on the timetable beside the eight MYP groups and carry their own workload.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Four ways to buy MYP support, each matched to a different problem. All are delivered one-to-one over live video, with screen sharing for task sheets, rubrics and the student's own marked work.

A criterion clinic, two or three sessions

The student brings a marked task and the rubric, and the sessions are spent working out exactly which criterion lost the bands and what the next band up requires in writing. It is short, cheap and it is the right first purchase for most MYP families in this community.

  • The school's own rubric and the student's own marked work
  • One criterion isolated rather than the whole subject reviewed
  • Ends with a rewritten section the student produced themselves

Weekly subject support in MYP 4 and 5

A standing hour for a student who has genuine content gaps as well as criterion problems, usually in mathematics or sciences where the Diploma step is coming. It works when the tutor alternates between content and the written criteria rather than treating the subject as content alone.

  • Content and criteria alternated rather than taught separately
  • Fixed weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time
  • Reviewed each reporting period against the criterion levels

Personal Project coaching inside the supervision framework

Sessions on scoping a feasible project, keeping a process journal that evidences planning, and writing a reflection that addresses the criteria. The school-assigned supervisor remains the person overseeing the work, and nothing produced here is written for the student.

  • Scope narrowed to something achievable and documentable
  • Process journal treated as assessed evidence, which it is
  • Feedback on the student's own writing, never a supplied draft

A bridging block from MYP 5 into the Diploma

Four to eight sessions in the summer before Year 12, aimed squarely at what changes: timed papers, non-calculator technique in Analysis and Approaches, command terms in the sciences, and writing to length under time pressure. Bought here, it costs a fraction of remedial work in December.

  • Timed conditions introduced before the Diploma does
  • Command terms taught as instructions rather than vocabulary
  • One or two subjects only, chosen on evidence

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in The Greens

01

What the criteria actually are, subject group by subject group

Everything in the Middle Years Programme follows from the criteria, so a parent who knows them by letter can read a report properly. Each of the eight subject groups has four, and each criterion is marked on a band from zero to eight against published descriptors. The descriptors are specific: the difference between a level 5 and a level 7 is usually a named quality of reasoning or communication rather than a quantity of correct content.

The table below sets out the criteria for six of the groups. Read your child's row and then read their last marked task. In most cases the lost bands are concentrated in one criterion and the parent has been told, accurately but unhelpfully, that the student needs to work harder. Knowing that the loss sits in criterion D, thinking critically, or criterion B, inquiring and designing, converts that into something a tutor can actually address.

Two patterns recur across the groups. First, at least two of the four criteria in every group are about process, communication or evaluation rather than about subject knowledge, which is why content revision so often fails to move a grade. Second, those process criteria are the transferable ones: a student who learns to write an evaluation in sciences usually improves in individuals and societies without further help.

Descriptors are published by the programme and are held by the school, which supplies the task-specific clarifications students are actually marked against. Nothing on this page reproduces them, and the right source is your child's subject teacher or the school's assessment policy rather than any tutoring site.

Five questions that reveal whether a tutor knows the MYP

This is the practical answer to the question at the top of the page. You cannot assess a tutor's MYP knowledge from a profile, because subject qualifications look identical whether or not the person has taught this framework. You can assess it in about three minutes of conversation, using the five questions in the table below. Each one has an answer that is impossible to improvise.

The most revealing is the fourth. A tutor who offers a bank of MYP past papers either does not understand the programme or is selling IGCSE material relabelled. Outside the optional eAssessment specimen materials, there is almost nothing of the kind, and that absence is a defining feature of the framework rather than a gap in anyone's resources. A tutor who says so plainly has taught it.

The second question is nearly as good. Statements of inquiry combine a key concept, one or more related concepts and a global context, and they shape what a task is actually asking for. A tutor who treats a statement of inquiry as a lesson title will coach the subject and miss the task. One who can explain how it narrows the expected response has sat in the planning meetings where these are written.

None of this is about credentialism. It is about not paying for thirty hours of content teaching when the lost bands sit in a criterion that content teaching does not touch. The questions cost nothing to ask and they are the single most useful thing on this page.

03

From criterion levels to a report grade

  • Four criteria, each 0 to 8, so a maximum total of 32
  • The total converts to a 1 to 7 grade, not to a percentage
  • Ask the school for criterion levels, not just the report grade
  • Hire against the criterion two or more bands below the others

This is the mechanism that makes MYP reports hard to read. Each of the four criteria in a subject group is marked from zero to eight, so the maximum criterion total is thirty-two. That total is then converted into a final grade from one to seven using published boundaries. The conversion is not a percentage, and treating it as one produces exactly the wrong conclusions about what to fix.

Work through a case. A student scores seven in criterion A, seven in criterion C, six in criterion B and two in criterion D. Their knowledge is strong, their communication is strong, and their total is twenty-two. The grade that follows sits well below what three of the four criteria suggest, and a parent reading only the grade will reasonably assume a general weakness. The actual weakness is one criterion, and it is a writing problem.

The reverse case also exists and is worth guarding against. A student with four level-five criteria has a respectable total and no obvious problem, which is a fair description of a student who is doing everything adequately. Tutoring there has a lower return than in the first case, because there is no single band to recover, and an honest provider should say so rather than sell a standing weekly hour.

The actionable version is simple. Ask the school for the criterion levels rather than the grade, which they hold for every assessed task. Look for the criterion that is two or more bands below the others. That criterion, in that subject group, is what a tutor should be hired for, and a clinic of two or three sessions is usually the right size of purchase.

04

The Personal Project, and the line a tutor must not cross

The Personal Project in MYP 5 is an independent piece of work with a product and a report, assessed in the current guide against three criteria, each marked from zero to eight. Students are assigned a supervisor at school and that supervision is part of the framework. Most of the available marks are for planning and reflection rather than for the product, which is why ambitious products with thin documentation score poorly and modest products with excellent process journals score well.

The legitimate help is real and useful. A tutor can press a student to narrow an unmanageable idea into something achievable and documentable. They can explain what the planning criterion expects to see in a process journal, and why a journal written retrospectively reads differently from one kept as the work happened. They can read a reflection the student wrote and say where it describes rather than evaluates, and they can ask the questions that turn description into evaluation.

The line is absolute and it is worth stating in plain words. No tutor at IB Gram will write the Personal Project, produce a draft for submission, or edit a report until the words are no longer the student's. Submitting work a student did not produce is malpractice under programme rules and the consequence falls on the student, not on the provider. Operations in this market do advertise finished assessed work; what they sell is risk transferred to a fifteen-year-old.

There is a practical point about the supervisor too. The school supervisor is the person who oversees the project and signs off on the academic honesty declaration, so anything a tutor does should be visible to and consistent with that supervision. A tutor who suggests working around the supervisor is describing something other than tutoring.

05

eAssessment: what is sat, and whether your school enters it

MYP eAssessment is the optional route to the IB MYP Certificate at the end of MYP 5, and the first thing to establish is whether your child's school enters candidates for it at all. Many do not, and a school report grade is unaffected either way. Asking the question directly is more reliable than inferring from whether the school is an IB continuum campus.

Where it does happen, two formats run in parallel. On-screen examinations, taken in two-hour sessions, cover language and literature, sciences, mathematics, individuals and societies, and interdisciplinary learning. Teacher-moderated ePortfolios cover language acquisition, the arts, design, and physical and health education. The Personal Project is moderated separately. The on-screen examinations are the only part of the whole programme that resembles a timed written paper.

That difference changes what preparation means. An ePortfolio is built across the year and cannot be revised for in the ordinary sense; the useful work is doing the coursework well as it happens. An on-screen examination can be prepared for, and the specimen material published for it is the closest thing to an MYP past paper that exists. A tutor who conflates the two will prepare the wrong half of the entry.

The table below sets this out. Treat the last two rows as the ones to act on: confirm with the school whether eAssessment is happening, and understand that the certificate requires the full set rather than a selection. Nothing on this page reproduces specimen material, which belongs to the programme and should be accessed through your school.

MYP 5 into the Diploma: the gap you are really buying help with

A large share of MYP enquiries from The Greens are not really about the MYP. They are about the step into the Diploma, asked a year early by parents who can see it coming. That is a sensible thing to worry about, because the step is real and it is almost entirely about assessment format rather than about content.

Criterion-based marking rewards process, communication and reflection over extended tasks. Diploma papers reward accuracy and command-term discipline under time. A student who has spent five years producing considered written work and almost no timed papers arrives in Year 12 with the knowledge and without the exam habits, and the first set of Diploma marks reads as a collapse in ability when it is a collapse in format familiarity.

Mathematics is the sharpest case. In most MYP schemes a calculator is routinely available, and Analysis and Approaches sits Paper 1 without one at both levels. The sciences are nearly as sharp: the Diploma courses assess uncertainty handling, data analysis and command terms in a way the MYP inquiry cycle approaches from a different angle. Language and literature shifts from analysis against criteria to guided analysis and comparative essays written to length under time.

The cheapest intervention is a bridging block of four to eight sessions in the summer before Year 12, aimed at one or two subjects and at format rather than content. Families who buy that arrive in September with the step already taken. Families who wait buy remedial work in December, at a busier point in the calendar, having already absorbed a set of marks that damaged a child's confidence unnecessarily.

Which schools around The Greens run the MYP

Only IB continuum campuses run the Middle Years Programme, and they are a minority of the schools within reach of The Greens. Dubai held 387,441 students across 227 private schools in 2024-25, offering seventeen different curricula, with the UK curriculum at thirty-seven per cent of enrolment and the International Baccalaureate at seven. That seven per cent share is the reason MYP cohorts are small and MYP-experienced tutors are scarce.

The nearest continuum campuses to The Greens sit in The Meadows and towards Emirates Hills, with others along the Umm Suqeim and Al Barsha stretch and in Jumeirah. Families from this community therefore either have a short run to an MYP school or a long one, with very little in between. Programme offerings do change, so confirm with the school rather than relying on any third-party list, this one included.

KHDA, which u.ae describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate, inspects annually on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak and publishes the reports. For an MYP parent the subject-level commentary is the part worth reading, since a school can be strong overall and thin in one subject group. Dubai is also adding seven new private schools for 2026-27, three of them International Baccalaureate, which creates 16,846 new places.

One more thing a Greens family should know. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, including the IB continuum campuses, and KHDA requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students because expectations and the language of instruction differ. They sit alongside the eight MYP subject groups on the timetable, and for those subjects the use of different or additional content without prior Ministry permission is strictly prohibited.

08

What MYP support costs, and why it prices differently

Published 2026 rates across Dubai put budget and university-student online tutoring at roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, qualified subject tutors online at about AED 150 to 300, and subject specialists from around AED 200 to 450 and upwards, with premium named tutors at AED 500 to 650. Bestimate's Dubai cost table puts a single weekly hour at AED 240 to 600 a month at the budget end and AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle. Those are market figures rather than IB Gram prices.

MYP support prices differently from Diploma support for a reason that cuts in the family's favour. Diploma tutoring is often a two-year standing commitment because there are papers to prepare for continuously. MYP problems are usually narrow and criterion-shaped, which makes a clinic of two or three sessions the right purchase rather than a weekly hour. The total spend is therefore smaller, provided the diagnosis is right.

The exception is MYP 4 and 5 in mathematics or sciences where a genuine content gap exists alongside the criterion problem, and the Diploma is two years away. There a weekly hour across a year is defensible, because the content has to be built rather than corrected. Even then the hours should alternate between content and the written criteria rather than treating the subject as content alone.

In-home visits are quoted in Dubai from roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel inside the price, and advertised monthly packages of four two-hour visits run at AED 1,599 to 1,799. Against online rates at the same level, the difference buys transport. IB Gram has no Dubai office and makes no home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India, and the in-home figures here belong to other providers and are shown so the premium is visible.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around The Greens

MYP availability, not price, is what varies across these communities, because only the IB continuum campuses run the programme. Each note records what families there actually ask about.

The Meadows

Home to one of the nearest IB continuum campuses, so this is where most Greens MYP enquiries originate. Requests concentrate on MYP 4 and 5 mathematics and sciences, almost always about the investigative and reflective criteria rather than about content.

Emirates Hills

Served by an IB continuum campus on the Springs and Meadows side, with families who often intend the full Diploma. Enquiries here are frequently forward-looking: what the MYP 5 to Diploma step requires rather than what this term's grade means.

The Views

Shares schools with The Greens, so it shares the same MYP cohort. The common question here is how a criterion level converts into a report grade, which is the single most useful thing a parent can have explained before a parents' evening.

The Springs

Mostly British-curriculum at secondary, which means enquiries from here are often about moving the other way: whether a child leaving the MYP can slot into IGCSE at Year 10 or Year 11, and what the content gap looks like.

Dubai Internet City

Apartment households where later slots are needed. Personal Project coaching works well in an evening slot because it is discussion rather than computation, which makes it one of the few MYP tasks that does not suffer at seven o'clock.

Al Sufouh and Umm Suqeim

Several IB continuum campuses sit along this stretch, which makes it the densest MYP belt within reach of The Greens. Language acquisition phase placement is a recurring question from this group.

Al Barsha

Both IB continuum and British-curriculum campuses, so families here sometimes have two children on two different frameworks. The practical consequence is that one child's tutoring plan tells you nothing useful about the other's.

Jumeirah and Jumeirah Village

Further out along the coast and down Al Khail Road, with IB continuum campuses in both directions. Journey times are the reason online delivery is standard for MYP support in these corridors rather than an alternative to it.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the criterion levels, not the grade

Ask the school for the criterion levels behind the report grade and send those, with the subject group and the MYP year. A criterion two or more bands below the others is a specific, fixable problem; a grade on its own tells a tutor almost nothing useful about what to do.

  2. 02

    Ask us the five questions

Before booking, put the questions from this page to whoever you speak to. A tutor who can name your child's four criteria by letter, explain a statement of inquiry and say that MYP past papers barely exist has taught the programme. One who offers a past-paper bank has not.

  3. 03

Use the free session on a marked task

The trial is a full session with no card details taken. The most productive use is the student's most recent marked task plus the rubric, because that lets the tutor identify the criterion losing the bands and show what the next band up requires in writing.

Buy the clinic before the weekly hour

Two or three sessions on one criterion is the right size of purchase for most MYP families. A standing weekly hour is defensible in MYP 4 and 5 mathematics or sciences where content has to be built as well as corrected, and it should be reviewed at every reporting period.

  5. 05

Plan the Diploma step a year early

If the Diploma is the destination, book a bridging block for the summer before Year 12 rather than remedial sessions for the December after it. Four to eight sessions on timed technique, non-calculator work and command terms costs a fraction of the alternative and protects a child's confidence.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Criteria named by letter before you book

Every match states which MYP subject groups and year levels they have taught and can name the four criteria for your child's group. That one check removes the commonest waste in this market, which is paying for content teaching when the lost bands sit in a process criterion.

No past-paper bank, because almost none exists

Outside the optional eAssessment specimen material there is very little MYP past-paper provision, and anyone offering a bank of it is selling relabelled IGCSE questions. Saying so costs us a sales line and saves you a wasted term.

The grade mechanism explained, not assumed

Four criteria from zero to eight, a total out of thirty-two, converted to a grade from one to seven. Parents who understand that can read a report and identify the single criterion to work on, which is usually a two or three-session job rather than a year-long one.

A stated limit on Personal Project help

Tutors narrow a scope, explain what the planning criterion expects of a process journal and respond to reflections the student wrote. Nobody here produces a report or supplies a draft, and nothing is done that the school-assigned supervisor could not see.

The Diploma step treated as a format problem

The MYP 5 to Diploma gap is overwhelmingly about timed papers, non-calculator technique and command terms rather than about content. Naming it that way means a short summer block often does the work that a term of remedial sessions is otherwise sold for.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in The Greens: your questions answered

Is there anyone near The Greens who actually knows the MYP syllabus?+

Fewer people than for IGCSE, and the reason is structural rather than local. The Middle Years Programme has no public question bank, no standard mark scheme and no textbook that maps onto what a school assesses, so experience teaching IGCSE transfers only the subject content. Removing the travel requirement widens the pool from whoever is free in western Dubai at half past four to everyone who has actually taught the framework, which is the variable that matters here more than in almost any other subject.

Why is an MYP tutor harder to find than a DP tutor in Dubai?+

Because the Diploma has papers, past papers and published weightings, and the MYP has criteria and task-specific descriptors held by each school. A Diploma tutor can prepare from public material; an MYP tutor has to understand how units are planned and how criterion descriptors are applied. The International Baccalaureate accounted for about seven per cent of Dubai private-school enrolment in 2024-25, and MYP cohorts are a subset of that, so the pool of experienced teachers is genuinely small.

How do I check whether a tutor really understands MYP criteria?+

Ask four things. Which criteria does my child's subject group use, by letter? What is a statement of inquiry and how does it shape a task? How does a criterion level of five become a report grade? And what MYP past papers exist? The last one is the clearest test: the honest answer is almost none outside eAssessment specimen material, and anyone offering a past-paper bank is selling relabelled IGCSE questions.

What do MYP criteria A to D actually assess?+

They differ by subject group, which is the detail most parents are never told. In mathematics they are knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. In sciences they are knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. In language and literature they are analysing, organising, producing text and using language. Each is marked on a band from zero to eight against published descriptors.

How does the MYP 1-8 scale convert to a school report grade?+

Each of the four criteria in a subject group is marked from zero to eight, so the maximum criterion total is thirty-two, and that total converts to a final grade from one to seven using published boundaries. It is not a percentage. A student scoring seven, seven, six and two has strong knowledge and communication and a total of twenty-two, which produces a grade well below what three of the four criteria suggest. Ask the school for the criterion levels rather than the grade.

What may an MYP tutor legitimately do on the Personal Project?+

Narrow an unmanageable idea into something achievable and documentable. Explain what the planning criterion expects of a process journal, and why one written retrospectively reads differently from one kept as the work happened. Read a reflection the student wrote and say where it describes rather than evaluates. No tutor here will write the Personal Project, produce a draft for submission, or edit a report until the words stop being the student's own, and the school-assigned supervisor remains the person overseeing the work.

Is MYP eAssessment compulsory for a student in The Greens?+

No. It is the optional route to the IB MYP Certificate at the end of MYP 5, and many schools do not enter candidates at all. Ask your school directly rather than inferring from the fact that it runs the continuum. Where it happens, on-screen examinations of two hours cover language and literature, sciences, mathematics, individuals and societies and interdisciplinary learning, while language acquisition, the arts, design and physical and health education are assessed by teacher-moderated ePortfolio. School report grades are unaffected either way.

Which schools around The Greens run the MYP?+

Only IB continuum campuses, which are a minority of the schools within reach. The nearest sit in The Meadows and towards Emirates Hills, with others along the Umm Suqeim and Al Barsha stretch and in Jumeirah, so families from this community face either a short run or a long one with little in between. Programme offerings do change, so confirm with the school rather than relying on any third-party list. Schools are named on this page as context only, with no affiliation implied.

My child is moving from MYP 5 to the Diploma. What is the gap?+

Format rather than content, almost entirely. Five years of criterion-based marking rewards process, communication and reflection over extended tasks; Diploma papers reward accuracy and command-term discipline under time. Mathematics is the sharpest case, since Analysis and Approaches sits a non-calculator paper at both levels and MYP work routinely allows a calculator. Four to eight sessions in the summer before Year 12 on timed technique and command terms costs a fraction of remedial work in December.

Does MYP tutoring cost more or less than DP tutoring in Dubai?+

Usually less in total, and the reason favours the family. Diploma support is often a two-year standing commitment because papers need continuous preparation. MYP problems are usually narrow and criterion-shaped, so a clinic of two or three sessions is the right purchase rather than a weekly hour. Hourly rates are the same market: roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online and AED 200 to 450 and upwards for a specialist, on published 2026 Dubai rates.

Is there past-paper practice for MYP, like there is for IGCSE?+

Almost none, and this is one of the defining differences between the two frameworks. The MYP assesses task-specific work against criterion descriptors held by the school, so there is no public bank of questions and no mark scheme to drill. The nearest equivalent is the specimen material published for the optional on-screen eAssessments, obtained through your school. Useful practice therefore means working on your child's own marked tasks against the rubric, which is exactly what a criterion clinic does.

How often should an MYP 4 student have tutoring?+

Less often than most families assume, and for a shorter period. If the problem is one criterion sitting two or more bands below the others, two or three sessions on that criterion usually does it, and a standing weekly hour would be buying reassurance. A weekly hour becomes defensible in MYP 4 and 5 mathematics or sciences where there is a genuine content gap and the Diploma is approaching, and even then the hours should alternate between content and written criteria.

Does the MYP prepare a child for IGCSE if we change school?+

The content overlaps substantially and the assessment does not. A student moving from MYP 4 into Year 10 or Year 11 IGCSE has usually met most of the subject material but has written very few timed papers, and on the Cambridge sciences they will also meet a practical or alternative-to-practical paper format that the MYP inquiry cycle approaches differently. The useful preparation is a short block on timed technique and paper structure rather than content revision.

How do Arabic and Islamic Education fit alongside the MYP?+

They sit on the timetable beside the eight MYP subject groups. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, including IB continuum campuses, and KHDA requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students because expectations and the language of instruction differ. For those subjects, the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry is strictly prohibited, so support must work with the school's own material.

What should I send a tutor before the first MYP session?+

Four things, and none of them is a report grade on its own. The subject group and the MYP year level. The criterion levels behind the grade, which the school holds for every assessed task. The most recent marked task together with the rubric the student was marked against. And the statement of inquiry for the current unit if it is available. With those, a first session can identify the criterion losing the bands rather than spending the hour working out what the problem is.

Send the criterion levels and ask the five questions

The most useful thing you can do before booking anything is get the criterion levels behind your child's report grade from the school, and then ask whoever you speak to the five questions on this page. If they can name the four criteria for your child's subject group by letter, explain how a statement of inquiry shapes a task, and tell you plainly that MYP past papers barely exist, they have taught this programme. Send us the subject group, the year level, the criterion levels and the most recent marked task, and the free first session will go on identifying the band that is missing rather than on finding out what the question is. All UAE lessons are one-to-one over live video.
