IB MYP Tutor in Nad Al Sheba

Hiring an IB MYP tutor in Nad Al Sheba usually starts with a report full of numbers out of 8 that nobody has explained. This page explains them: the four criteria per subject, the 32-mark total, how it converts to a 1-7 grade, and what a band descriptor asks for that a 5 does not provide. It also compares MYP against IGCSE at sixteen, because schools in this district offer both. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Nad Al Sheba

A report full of numbers out of 8, and what to do with it

The Middle Years Programme produces the least legible school report in the Dubai market. A parent receives a set of numbers out of 8 against criteria labelled A to D, a converted grade from 1 to 7, and commentary written in programme language. Most families in Nad Al Sheba read the converted grade, note whether it went up or down, and put the report away. The criterion levels underneath it are where the useful information is, and they are specific enough to act on.

Each MYP subject is assessed against four criteria, each marked out of 8, giving 32 marks that convert to a 1-7 grade through published boundaries. The criteria differ by subject group but the structure does not. A student at 6, 6, 6 and 3 and a student at 5, 5, 5 and 5 can land on the same converted grade while needing entirely different help: the first has one broken criterion and three strong ones, the second has a consistent ceiling. Buying generic subject tutoring for the first case is close to useless.

This page is also a comparison, because Nad Al Sheba is a district where the comparison is live. Repton School Dubai, Kings' School Nad Al Sheba and Hartland International School sit inside or beside the district running British secondary routes to IGCSE, while GEMS Modern Academy and Swiss International Scientific School Dubai run IB continuums through MYP. Families here genuinely choose between the two at eleven and sometimes revisit the choice at fourteen, which makes an honest comparison more useful than an argument for either.

Dubai held 387,441 private-school students across 227 schools in 2024-25, offering seventeen different curricula, with the UK curriculum at 37% of enrolment, Indian at 26%, American at 14% and the IB at 7%. The emirate's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, three of them International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places. So the IB share is growing from a small base, which means MYP cohorts in individual schools remain modest and specialist MYP tutoring supply stays correspondingly thin on the ground.

IB Gram delivers tuition to UAE families as one-to-one lessons over live video, and does not send tutors to addresses in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. For a thirteen-year-old that trade is worth naming honestly: a tutor in the room notices drift faster than one on a screen. What the screen buys is a tutor who has read the actual MYP criteria for that subject group, which is a narrower thing to find locally than a general subject tutor.

One practical instruction before the detail. Ask the school for the subject guide criterion descriptors for whichever subject is causing concern, and bring them to the first conversation along with the last report. Schools will supply them and almost no parent asks. With the descriptor in front of you, the conversation stops being about whether your child is good at the subject and becomes about which band their work reached and what the next band up asks for that it did not provide. That is a question a thirteen-year-old can usually answer themselves once somebody reads them the words.

  • Each MYP subject is marked on four criteria out of 8, totalling 32 marks
  • The 32 marks convert to a 1-7 grade through published boundaries
  • The Personal Project in the final MYP year is marked on three criteria over 24 marks
  • MYP runs eight subject groups plus service as action and approaches to learning
  • Schools in this district offer both MYP and IGCSE routes to sixteen
  • Sessions are live one-to-one video on Gulf Standard Time, never a home visit
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

MYP sits between two other programmes and beside an alternative, and a Nad Al Sheba family will meet all four within one school search. These are the four, described by what each one asks of a student rather than by its aims.

PYPAges 3-12 · Pre-KG to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Transdisciplinary units of inquiry with no terminal assessment, ending in the exhibition — the first extended independent project most children produce. Strong PYP reporting can coexist with insecure written number work and spelling, because the programme assesses inquiry and communication rather than drilled accuracy. The useful diagnostic before MYP is whether the child can explain a method aloud and then write it down.

In Dubai, PYP runs alongside KHDA's mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies, required in every private school regardless of the licensed curriculum. For families new to the emirate, Arabic as a timetabled subject from a standing start is often the first tutoring request, and it is cheapest to address in the PYP years rather than in MYP.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5, Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups, each assessed on four criteria out of 8 for a 32-mark total converting to a 1-7 grade. Interdisciplinary units, service as action and approaches to learning run across the whole programme. The final year carries the Personal Project, marked on three criteria over 24 marks, and in some schools MYP eAssessment leading to the MYP Certificate.

Nad Al Sheba sits beside schools running MYP straight into the Diploma within one building, so the pacing is set internally and the transition is invisible from outside. The hidden consequence is examination experience: a student assessed through criteria-based tasks for five years meets their first two-hour paper in DP1 with no practice at pacing one.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE, the alternative at the same age

Terminal examinations in eight to ten separate subjects, graded by the board, with tiering in some subjects and a published syllabus code for each. Where MYP assesses skills against criteria continuously, IGCSE assesses content under timed conditions at the end. Neither is harder; they reward different students and produce different habits.

Several schools in and around Nad Al Sheba run IGCSE and then split students towards A Level or the IB Diploma at sixteen. A family choosing between MYP and IGCSE at eleven is therefore not choosing their child's post-sixteen route, which is a common misunderstanding and worth correcting before it drives the decision.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, a 4,000-word Extended Essay and CAS. Both MYP and IGCSE students enter it, arriving with opposite strengths: MYP students are comfortable with extended independent work and unused to timed papers, IGCSE students the reverse. Identifying which profile your child has is the most useful preparation available.

UAE schools sit the May session. No specific IB session or results date appears on this page, because ibo.org blocks automated checking and no date in this project has been confirmed from the IB itself. Confirm every one with your school's IB coordinator or on ibo.org directly rather than from a search result.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

MYP runs eight subject groups, each with its own four criteria. Below are the groups as Nad Al Sheba students meet them, described by which criterion most often holds a grade down rather than by the content covered.

Language and literature

MYP 1-5, four criteria

Analysing, organising, producing text and using language. The criterion that most often sits low is organising: students with good ideas and weak structure cap at a 5 regardless of insight. Essay planning taught explicitly, with a paragraph purpose stated before writing, moves this criterion faster than more reading does.

Language acquisition

MYP 1-5, four criteria, phased

Listening, reading, speaking and writing, assessed within a phase rather than a year group. Students lose marks by producing accurate but unambitious language, because the descriptors reward range alongside accuracy. Knowing which phase the student is being assessed in is essential and parents are rarely told.

Individuals and societies

MYP 1-5, four criteria

Knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating, and thinking critically. Thinking critically is the usual ceiling: a student who describes two viewpoints without evaluating them has met the lower descriptors only. Source evaluation taught as a routine rather than an instinct is the specific fix.

Sciences

MYP 1-5, four criteria

Knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Inquiring and designing is where marks concentrate and where schools have least time: naming variables, justifying a control and writing a testable hypothesis are learnable in three sessions.

Mathematics

MYP 1-5, four criteria, standard and extended

Knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Communicating is the quiet killer: correct working with no explanation, undefined variables and unlabelled graphs cap the criterion. The extended route in the later years is the one that prepares a student for Higher Level Diploma maths.

Arts

MYP 1-5, four criteria

Knowing and understanding, developing skills, thinking creatively, and responding. The process journal carries more weight than students expect, and a strong final piece with a thin journal scores below a modest piece with a documented process. That is the single most useful thing to tell an arts student in MYP 4.

Physical and health education

MYP 1-5, four criteria

Knowing and understanding, planning for performance, applying and performing, and reflecting and improving performance. Written components are genuinely assessed, which surprises families who treat the subject as practical only, and the planning and reflecting criteria are where grades are made.

Design

MYP 1-5, four criteria

Inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, and evaluating. Entirely process-assessed: the design cycle has to be evidenced at each stage, and a finished product with undocumented development cannot reach the upper bands however good it looks. Documentation discipline is the whole subject.

Interdisciplinary units

MYP 1-5, assessed separately

Units drawing on two or more subject groups with their own criteria, including evaluating and reflecting on interdisciplinary learning. Students treat them as a double dose of two subjects rather than as a distinct task with its own descriptors, which is why able students sometimes score oddly low on them.

The Personal Project

Final MYP year, three criteria, 24 marks

Planning, applying skills, and reflecting, each out of 8. Assessed on the process journal and the report rather than on the product, which students consistently misread. A beautifully made product with a thin journal cannot reach the top bands; a modest product with rigorous documentation can.

Approaches to learning

Across all five years

Thinking, communication, social, self-management and research skills, woven into subject criteria rather than graded separately. Self-management is the one that most often explains a capable student's mediocre report: deadlines missed, drafts not kept, journals written retrospectively the night before.

Arabic within the MYP timetable

Required in Dubai private schools

KHDA requires Arabic in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with separate classes organised for Arab and non-Arab students. Depending on the school this may be assessed as language acquisition, as language and literature, or alongside the MYP structure as a mandatory subject.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

MYP support takes three shapes, and the right one depends on which criterion is low rather than on which subject. All three are live one-to-one video sessions with a named tutor who works from the criterion wording.

Criterion-focused weekly session

One subject, one weekly slot on Gulf Standard Time, aimed at the specific criterion that is holding the converted grade down. A student at 6, 6, 6 and 3 does not need more subject content; they need the one criterion unpicked, which is usually communication, organising or thinking critically rather than knowledge.

  • Starts from the criterion levels on the last report
  • Works the criterion wording, not the textbook chapter
  • Tracks the school's current unit and next assessed task
  • A free trial lesson before anything is booked

Personal Project support blocks

Scheduled around the school's internal milestones rather than weekly, through the final MYP year. The tutor reads the student's own process journal and report against the three criteria and gives written feedback on planning, the skills evidence and the quality of reflection. Nothing is written or produced for the student.

  • Goal and success criteria tested for feasibility early
  • Process journal reviewed as the assessed document it is
  • Feedback mapped to the three criteria and their 24 marks
  • No text, product or journal content supplied

Pre-Diploma bridge sessions

For MYP 5 students heading into DP1, aimed squarely at the two things MYP does not drill: timed written examination and the extended independent writing the Diploma assumes. Usually a short run in the final two terms rather than an ongoing arrangement, and often in maths or a science rather than across the board.

  • Timed paper practice under a real clock
  • Extended writing to a word limit with a plan first
  • Maths extended-route content for Higher Level entry
  • Ends when the Diploma starts

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Nad Al Sheba

These tutors teach Middle Years Programme subjects to students across Dubai's central corridor, working to the published criteria rather than to a textbook. Each will ask for the criterion levels on the last report before teaching anything, because a student scoring 6, 6, 6 and 3 needs something very different from one scoring 5 across the board.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Nad Al Sheba

01

MYP against IGCSE at sixteen

This is the comparison a Nad Al Sheba family actually makes, because schools within a few kilometres of each other offer both and the choice is real. It is usually presented to parents as a philosophy question — inquiry and skills against content and examinations — which is accurate and not very useful. The practical differences are more concrete than that.

MYP assesses continuously against four published criteria per subject, each out of 8, with the 32 marks converting to a 1-7 grade. Nothing is externally examined unless the school enters students for MYP eAssessment. IGCSE assesses content under timed conditions at the end of two years, graded by an exam board, with a syllabus code and in some subjects a tier that caps the grade. One produces students comfortable with extended independent work; the other produces students comfortable with a clock.

Neither is harder and neither closes the Diploma. Both routes feed into DP1 and into A Level. What differs is the habit each leaves behind, and that habit is worth planning around rather than discovering. An MYP student entering the Diploma has never sat a two-hour paper. An IGCSE student entering the Diploma has never written 4,000 words or kept a process journal. Each gap is addressable in the final year of the respective programme and expensive to address later.

The decision also has a UAE administrative dimension. Ministry of Education equivalency rules for the British track are published in detail — five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than E or grade 3, Arabic and Islamic education excluded, plus one Advanced Level subject at E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. No IB equivalency figure is published on a source this project could verify, so a family for whom UAE university entry is the likely route should check the current requirement for their child's qualification on moe.gov.ae directly rather than take any page's word for it.

02

How MYP marking works, and how to read the report

Each MYP subject has four criteria, labelled A to D, each marked out of 8 against published descriptors. The four add to 32, and that total converts to a 1-7 grade using boundaries the school applies. The descriptors are not secret; they are published in the subject guides and most schools will supply them on request. Almost no parent asks, which is the gap this section exists to close.

The reason the criterion levels matter more than the converted grade is arithmetic. A student at 6, 6, 6 and 3 scores 21. A student at 5, 5, 5 and 5 scores 20. The converted grades may be adjacent and the two students have nothing in common: one has three strong criteria and one broken one, the other has a consistent ceiling. The first needs one specific intervention of three or four sessions. The second needs a term of subject work.

The criteria that most often sit low across subject groups are the ones about expression and evaluation rather than knowledge. Communicating in mathematics. Organising in language and literature. Thinking critically in individuals and societies. Inquiring and designing in sciences. Evaluating in design. In every case the student knows the material and has not met the descriptor's demand, which is a different problem from not knowing the material and has a much faster fix.

So the first action for any Nad Al Sheba parent holding an MYP report is to ask the school for the criterion descriptors for the subject in question, read the level-7-8 band aloud with the child, and ask them to say in their own words what it requires that their work did not provide. Most students can answer that in five minutes once they have read the words. Most have never read the words.

The Personal Project: three criteria, twenty-four marks, one journal

The Personal Project in the final MYP year is the piece of work students most consistently misunderstand, and the misunderstanding is simple: they believe they are being assessed on the product. They are not. It is marked on three criteria — planning, applying skills, and reflecting — each out of 8 for a total of 24, and the evidence for all three sits in the process journal and the report.

The practical consequence is counterintuitive and worth saying to a student in MYP 5 early. A beautifully made product with a thin, retrospective journal cannot reach the upper bands, because there is no evidence of planning or of skills applied. A modest product with a rigorous journal — decisions recorded as they were taken, difficulties documented, skills identified and evidenced — can. Students find this unfair for about a week and then find it liberating.

The failure mode is almost always self-management rather than ability. The journal is written the night before submission from memory, which produces reflection that reads as description because there is nothing recorded to reflect on. The fix is procedural: a fixed ten minutes after each working session, with a date, a decision and a difficulty recorded. A tutor can enforce that rhythm and check the journal periodically against the criteria.

What a tutor may and may not do here deserves stating plainly. A tutor may discuss whether a goal is achievable in the time available, help the student write success criteria they can actually test against, explain what each criterion asks for, and give written feedback on the journal and report the student has written. A tutor may not choose the goal, make or contribute to the product, write any part of the journal or report, or edit either to completion. The declaration on the submitted work is the student's.

MYP into DP against IGCSE into DP

Both routes arrive at the Diploma and both arrive with a gap, but the gaps are opposite and that is genuinely useful to know a year in advance. The comparison matters in this district because several schools run MYP straight into DP internally while others run IGCSE and then offer the Diploma as one of two sixth-form options.

The MYP student arrives comfortable with extended independent work, with documented process, with criteria-based feedback and with research skills. They arrive without examination technique: five years of criteria-based tasks, however demanding, do not teach a student to pace a two-hour paper, to decide in ninety seconds which optional question to answer, or to abandon a question and come back. In DP1 that shows up as a capable student with mediocre test results.

The IGCSE student arrives the other way round. Examination technique is secure, timing is drilled, and command terms are familiar. What is missing is sustained independent work: nothing in Years 10 and 11 required 4,000 words, a documented process over six months, or a self-chosen research question. In DP1 that shows up as a strong test performer whose internal assessments and Extended Essay stall.

Both gaps are cheap to close in the final year of the preceding programme and expensive to close in DP1, when six subjects and five components are already competing. For an MYP 5 student in Nad Al Sheba that means timed paper practice during the final MYP year, particularly in maths and the sciences. For a Year 11 IGCSE student it means one extended piece of writing to a word limit, planned and drafted properly, which no part of their curriculum will otherwise require.

Approaches to learning, and the capable student with a poor report

  • Approaches to learning are assessed inside subject criteria, not separately
  • Self-management failures present as subject weaknesses and get mistreated as such
  • One shared fortnightly plan listing assessed tasks and their criteria
  • Ten minutes of dated journal entry after each working session
  • A draft two days early, so feedback has something to work with

The most common MYP case in this corridor is not a student who cannot do the work. It is a capable student whose report sits at 4s and 5s because of how the work arrives: late, undrafted, unplanned, with the journal written retrospectively and the research done the evening before. MYP calls these approaches to learning, and the relevant one is self-management.

Approaches to learning are not graded separately. They are woven into the subject criteria, which is why their absence shows up as a subject problem and gets treated as one. A student losing marks on the organising criterion in language and literature usually has an outlining problem rather than a writing problem. A student losing marks on inquiring and designing in sciences often has a planning problem rather than a science problem. Buying subject content for either case is buying the wrong thing.

What works is procedural and slightly boring. A single shared planning document for the fortnight ahead, with assessed tasks and their criteria listed. Ten minutes of journal entry after each working session, dated, naming one decision and one difficulty. A draft produced two days before a deadline rather than on it, so there is something to give feedback on. None of that requires a subject specialist, which is worth saying because it means some MYP problems are cheaper to fix than parents fear.

Where a tutor adds value is enforcement and modelling rather than instruction. A weekly slot that opens with the plan and closes with the journal creates a rhythm the student will not create alone at thirteen. Over a term that rhythm moves several criteria at once across several subjects, which is a better return than a term of content work in one of them.

06

What MYP tutoring costs, and why the market barely prices it

MYP is the least-priced segment of the Dubai tutoring market. The competitor pages researched for this project price IB broadly or price the Diploma specifically; almost none distinguish MYP, and three of six publish no price at all. So a Nad Al Sheba parent researching MYP support is working from figures that were quoted for something else, and it is worth knowing which something.

The published bands, read in October 2026, belong to whoever published them: budget online or undergraduate tutoring AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52; a qualified subject tutor online AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200; an IB specialist AED 200 to 450 or more, TutorChase publishing AED 270; in-home one-to-one AED 180 to 500 including travel; and a premium end reaching AED 650 at BartyED.

For MYP specifically the specialist premium is harder to justify than it is for Higher Level Diploma subjects, with one exception. Ordinary subject content at MYP level is within reach of a competent qualified tutor, so the middle band is usually the right purchase. The exception is criteria work and the Personal Project, where somebody who has actually read the subject guide descriptors is doing a different job from somebody teaching the topic, and that experience is not reliably present at the lower bands.

Monthly, Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end and AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle, with specialist exam-year support at AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more — a band that mostly does not apply to MYP, because MYP has no terminal exam year unless the school enters eAssessment. Packages seen include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions. Ask about session length, VAT and what happens if you stop after one lesson.

MYP eAssessment, and whether your school uses it

Most parents in this district have never heard of MYP eAssessment, and a significant number of MYP students never meet it, because entering students is the school's choice rather than a programme requirement. It is worth establishing which case your child is in, because it changes whether the final MYP year contains an external examination at all.

Where a school enters students, eAssessment provides on-screen examinations in a set of subjects alongside moderated ePortfolios, leading to the MYP Certificate. Where a school does not, the final MYP year is assessed internally against the same criteria and the student leaves with school reports and the Personal Project rather than an externally certified qualification. Both are legitimate; they are not equivalent documents.

The practical question for a Nad Al Sheba family is one email to the school: does my child sit MYP eAssessment, in which subjects, and when. If the answer is yes, the final MYP year contains the examination practice that MYP is otherwise criticised for lacking, and the DP1 transition is correspondingly easier. If the answer is no, that gap is real and should be closed deliberately with timed practice during MYP 5.

There is also a comparison worth drawing for families weighing MYP against IGCSE. A student who sits eAssessment leaves MYP with external certification and examination experience; a student who does not leaves with neither, which is the single strongest practical argument IGCSE has in this comparison. Knowing which version of MYP your school runs makes the choice between programmes a real decision rather than an abstract one.

Arabic and the mandatory subjects inside an MYP week

MYP already runs eight subject groups, and in Dubai those sit alongside subjects the emirate requires. KHDA mandates Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and its published requirements were to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year, or April 2026 for schools whose year begins in April.

The organisational rules are specific and worth knowing, because families moving into Nad Al Sheba from outside the region frequently meet them for the first time. For Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs, and KHDA states that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited due to the different curriculum expectations and language of instruction. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arabs and for Arabic as a first language.

There is a timetable arithmetic that MYP parents feel more acutely than most, because MYP's eight subject groups are already broad. KHDA calculates mandatory-subject instructional time on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided the weekly total is met, and it advises that any mandatory-subject lesson runs at least 25 minutes. Those minutes come out of a week that also has to hold eight subject groups, interdisciplinary units and service as action.

For tutoring there is one firm constraint. KHDA states that for the mandatory subjects, the use of any different or additional content without prior Ministry of Education permission is strictly prohibited. So support for Arabic, Islamic Education or Social Studies works within the school's own approved material rather than bringing in an alternative syllabus, and any provider offering a parallel curriculum for those subjects is offering something that does not fit the rules.

  • Shorter sessions: 45 minutes rather than 60 for MYP students
  • Earlier slots: 15:30 or 16:00, achievable in the in-district communities
  • The free trial lesson is the test of whether the format suits the child

Everything else on this page argues from criteria and comparison. This section argues from the thing parents of younger students actually worry about, which is whether a thirteen-year-old will engage with a tutor on a screen. It deserves a straight answer rather than a reassurance.

Presence matters more at this age than at seventeen. A tutor in the room notices a wandering attention faster, and a parent can see the session happening. Those are genuine advantages and the market charges roughly AED 50 to 150 an hour extra for them. For a student who needs supervision as much as teaching, that premium can be the right purchase, and IB Gram does not sell it — we do not offer home visits in the UAE, and that service exists only in India.

What a screen gives in exchange is specific to MYP. The criterion descriptors can be open beside the student's own work, which is the whole method for criteria-based teaching. A shared document holds the fortnightly plan and the project journal where both tutor and student can see them between sessions. And the tutor is drawn from the whole timezone, which matters because somebody who has read the MYP subject guide descriptors for the relevant subject group is a narrow profile to find within a twenty-minute drive of any one district.

The practical mitigations for a younger student are worth naming. Shorter sessions: 45 minutes beats 60 at this age. Earlier slots: 15:30 or 16:00 rather than after dinner, which is achievable in Nad Al Sheba and Sobha Hartland where the schools sit inside the community. Camera on, shared screen, and a parent within earshot for the first few sessions. And the free trial lesson, which is the only honest way to find out whether a particular child works in this format before anything is paid.

From a 5 to a 7: what the top band actually asks for

The question most Nad Al Sheba MYP parents want answered is how a 5 becomes a 7, and there is a real answer that is not more effort. The published descriptors change in kind between the middle and upper bands, not in degree, and a student working harder at what earned a 5 will earn a slightly better 5.

Across subject groups the upper bands consistently ask for three things the middle bands do not. Independent judgement rather than reported content: an evaluation reached and defended rather than two viewpoints described. Consistency under less scaffolding: the same quality when the task is open as when it is structured. And explicit reasoning made visible: the thinking shown on the page rather than implied by a correct conclusion.

That translates into specific, slightly unglamorous practice. Ask the student, after any piece of work, what judgement they reached and what their best evidence for it was. Give them one task a fortnight with the scaffolding deliberately removed. Require a sentence explaining each step rather than only the steps. None of that is subject content, which is why a term of content teaching rarely moves a 5 to a 7 while a term of this often does.

One caution, because it matters more than any technique. Nobody can promise a grade, and no honest tutor will put a number on an outcome. What can be promised is a named diagnosis, specific practice against a published descriptor, and a written note each session saying what was worked and what comes next. A provider promising a particular grade is telling you something about themselves at no charge, and the researched set for this market contains several.

Where we tutor

Nad Al Sheba and the communities around it

What differs across this block of communities is the school run and the programme their schools run. For an MYP family both matter, because the programme decides the help needed and the commute decides when it can happen.

Nad Al Sheba

Repton School Dubai, Kings' School Nad Al Sheba and GEMS Modern Academy inside the district, between them covering both the British route and an IB continuum. Short school runs make a 15:30 session realistic, which suits a younger student's concentration.

Sobha Hartland

Hartland International School and North London Collegiate School Dubai sit inside the community. Easiest scheduling of the block, and the most common MYP request from here is Personal Project support in the final year.

Meydan

Newer stock around the racecourse with many families in their first or second UAE year. Mid-programme arrivals are frequent, and a student joining MYP 3 from a national curriculum needs the criteria explained before anything else.

Mohammed Bin Rashid City

District One villa plots with long internal roads and limited exits onto Al Khail. Pick-up traffic absorbs twenty minutes inside the community, which matters more for a younger student whose useful window closes earlier in the evening.

Al Quoz and Al Quoz 4

Mixed residential and industrial, with longer journeys to the Nad Al Sheba schools. Weekday starts land after 17:00, which for an MYP student usually means a shorter session rather than a later one.

Business Bay

Apartments and short commutes, with students mostly at Downtown and Al Jaddaf schools. Evening slots work here, and a 45-minute criterion-focused session suits that window better than a long content block.

Downtown Dubai

No school on site, so every family drives out and back. For MYP the narrow after-school window argues for fortnightly longer sessions around assessment deadlines rather than a thin weekly hour.

Al Jaddaf and Culture Village

Swiss International Scientific School Dubai anchors this end with a bilingual IB continuum from the early years. Requests from here often involve the written communication criteria rather than subject content.

DIFC

Few families, almost all in apartments with long parental working days. Weekend sessions dominate, and for a younger student that is often better anyway: a Saturday morning beats a Tuesday at 20:00.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Nad Al Sheba

Nad Al Sheba and Sobha Hartland

Schools inside or beside the district, between them covering an IB continuum through MYP and British routes to IGCSE. A family comparing the two programmes at eleven is usually comparing schools from this short list.

  • GEMS Modern Academy
  • Repton School Dubai
  • Kings' School Nad Al Sheba
  • Hartland International School
  • North London Collegiate School Dubai

The IB continuum schools across the corridor

Schools running the IB across more than one programme, which is where most MYP enquiries from this page originate. Several of them also run the Diploma, so the MYP-to-DP transition happens internally.

  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai
  • Dubai International Academy Al Barsha
  • Deira International School
  • GEMS Wellington Academy Silicon Oasis
  • Safa Community School
  • Dubai Heights Academy

Schools are named as context for the neighbourhood's education options; IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement relationship with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the criterion levels, not the grade

The useful opening message gives the subject, the MYP year, and the four criterion levels from the last report. A student at 6, 6, 6 and 3 and one at 5, 5, 5 and 5 may share a converted grade and need entirely different help. If you have the subject guide descriptors, send those too; if not, the school will supply them.

  2. 02

    A free diagnostic trial lesson

One live session spent reading the relevant criterion descriptor with the student and looking at a recent piece of their own work against it. The purpose is to establish whether the gap is content, expression or self-management. You get a written note naming which and what the next few sessions should target. No payment is involved.

  3. 03

Work the criterion, not the chapter

Where one criterion is low, sessions work that criterion's demand directly: paragraph purpose for organising, variable naming for inquiring and designing, explanation of steps for communicating in mathematics. Three or four sessions on the actual descriptor usually moves it, where a term of topic revision does not.

  4. 04

Set the fortnightly plan and the journal rhythm

A shared document listing the assessed tasks for the fortnight and their criteria, opened at the start of each session, plus ten minutes of dated journal entry after each working session. At thirteen that rhythm will not appear on its own, and over a term it moves several criteria across several subjects at once.

  5. 05

    Protect the Personal Project early

In the final MYP year, the goal and success criteria are tested for feasibility before work starts, and the journal is reviewed periodically as the assessed document it is. The single most common failure is a journal written retrospectively, which produces reflection that reads as description because nothing was recorded.

  6. 06

    Bridge into the Diploma deliberately

If DP1 is next, the final MYP terms add the one thing the programme does not drill: timed written papers under a real clock, particularly in maths and the sciences. It is a short block rather than an ongoing arrangement, and it ends when the Diploma starts.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We start from the criterion levels

The converted 1-7 grade hides the information. Four criteria out of 8 each, totalling 32, is where the diagnosis lives, and a single broken criterion among three strong ones is a three-session problem rather than a term-long one.

The descriptors are read, not paraphrased

Criteria-based teaching means having the published descriptor open beside the student's own work and asking what the upper band requires that this did not provide. Most MYP students have never read the words, which is the cheapest gap on this page to close.

The Personal Project treated as a journal, not a product

Three criteria over 24 marks, all evidenced in the process journal and report. A beautiful product with a thin journal cannot reach the upper bands. We enforce the journal rhythm and give feedback on the student's own writing, and produce none of it.

Honest about what video costs at thirteen

Presence matters more at this age, and we do not sell it in the UAE — home visits are an India-only service. Shorter sessions, earlier slots and the free trial lesson are how that trade is managed rather than argued away.

The right band, not the top one

Ordinary MYP subject content sits within a competent qualified tutor's reach, so the middle market band is usually the right purchase. The specialist premium is worth paying for criteria work, the Personal Project and the Diploma bridge, and we say which is which.

No guarantees and no borrowed credentials

Nobody can promise a grade and we do not. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoHRE, the Ministry of Education or the IB, and claims none; regulators are explained here because parents need to understand them.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Nad Al Sheba: your questions answered

Is the MYP tutoring delivered in Nad Al Sheba or online?+

Online, one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE addresses; home visits are a service we run only in India. For a younger student that trade is worth naming: presence matters more at thirteen than at seventeen, and we do not sell it here. What the format buys instead is a tutor who has read the published criterion descriptors for that subject group, which is a narrow profile to find within a short drive of any one district.

What do the numbers out of 8 on my child's MYP report mean?+

Each MYP subject is assessed against four criteria, labelled A to D, each marked out of 8 against published descriptors, giving 32 marks that convert to a 1-7 grade using boundaries the school applies. The criterion levels carry more information than the converted grade. A student at 6, 6, 6 and 3 has one broken criterion among three strong ones; a student at 5, 5, 5 and 5 has a consistent ceiling. Those need completely different help and may show the same grade.

Should we choose MYP or IGCSE for our child at eleven?+

Both lead to the Diploma and to A Level, so the choice is about habits rather than doors. MYP assesses continuously against four published criteria per subject and leaves students comfortable with extended independent work and unpractised at timed papers. IGCSE assesses content under exam conditions and leaves the reverse. One question changes the comparison materially: ask whether the MYP school enters students for eAssessment, because without it there is no external examination before the Diploma.

Which MYP criterion is usually the one holding a grade down?+

Across subject groups it is consistently the criteria about expression and evaluation rather than knowledge. Communicating in mathematics, where correct working is given with no explanation. Organising in language and literature, where good ideas arrive unstructured. Thinking critically in individuals and societies, where two views are described and neither evaluated. Inquiring and designing in sciences, where variables go unnamed. In each case the student knows the material and has not met the descriptor's demand.

How is the Personal Project actually marked?+

On three criteria — planning, applying skills and reflecting — each out of 8 for a total of 24, with the evidence drawn from the process journal and the report rather than from the product. Students consistently misread this and invest in the product. A beautifully made outcome with a thin, retrospective journal cannot reach the upper bands because there is no evidence of planning or skills in use; a modest outcome with a rigorous dated journal can.

How do we stop the process journal being written the night before?+

Make it procedural rather than motivational. Ten minutes after each working session, with a date, one decision taken and one difficulty met. That is the whole system, and it produces the evidence the reflecting criterion needs, because reflection on recorded decisions reads as evaluation while reflection on remembered ones reads as description. At fourteen the rhythm will not appear unprompted, so a weekly session that opens with the plan and closes with the journal is what enforces it.

My child is clearly capable but the MYP report is mediocre. Why?+

Usually self-management rather than ability. Approaches to learning are assessed inside the subject criteria rather than separately, so late, undrafted, unplanned work presents as a subject weakness and gets treated as one. A student losing marks on organising generally has an outlining problem, not a writing problem. The fix is a fortnightly plan listing assessed tasks with their criteria, and a draft produced two days early so there is something to give feedback on.

What is MYP eAssessment and does every school use it?+

It is the optional external component of MYP: on-screen examinations in a set of subjects alongside moderated ePortfolios, leading to the MYP Certificate. Entering students is the school's decision rather than a programme requirement, so plenty of MYP students never meet it. Ask the programme coordinator whether your child sits it, in which subjects, and when. If the answer is no, the final MYP year contains no external examination, and that gap is worth closing with timed practice.

Will my child struggle in DP1 coming from MYP?+

In one specific way, and it is addressable. MYP students arrive comfortable with extended independent work, documented process and criteria-based feedback, and arrive without examination technique — five years of criteria-based tasks do not teach pacing a two-hour paper or deciding quickly between optional questions. That shows up in DP1 as a capable student with mediocre test results. Timed paper practice in the final MYP year, particularly in maths and the sciences, closes it cheaply.

How much does MYP tutoring cost in Dubai?+

The market barely prices MYP separately, so figures quoted for IB usually mean the Diploma. Bands read in October 2026: AED 45 to 150 an hour for budget online tutoring, with EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52; AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online, Unitors publishing IB from AED 200; AED 200 to 450 or more for an IB specialist, TutorChase publishing AED 270. For ordinary MYP content the middle band is usually the right purchase.

Does a 5 become a 7 by working harder?+

No, and that is why effort alone frustrates students at this level. The published descriptors change in kind between the middle and upper bands: the upper ones ask for independent judgement rather than reported content, consistency when the task is unscaffolded, and reasoning made visible on the page. A student working harder at what earned a 5 earns a slightly better 5. The practice that moves it is naming a judgement and its evidence after every piece of work.

How does MYP mathematics prepare a student for Higher Level Diploma maths?+

It depends on whether the student took the extended route in the later MYP years, which is the one that carries the content Higher Level assumes. The communicating criterion matters here too: MYP maths rewards defining variables, labelling graphs and explaining steps, which is exactly what the Diploma's mathematical exploration is marked on. Students strong on investigating patterns and weak on communicating tend to struggle most with that exploration, and that is visible from the MYP report.

Why is Arabic on the timetable alongside eight MYP subject groups?+

KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with requirements to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Schools must organise separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes are strictly prohibited. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, inside a week already holding eight subject groups.

Can a tutor use a different Arabic or Islamic Education syllabus?+

No. KHDA states that for the mandatory subjects, the use of any different or additional content without prior Ministry of Education permission is strictly prohibited. So support for Arabic, Islamic Education or Social Studies has to work within the school's own approved material rather than bringing in an alternative programme. Any provider offering a parallel curriculum for those subjects is offering something that does not fit the rules, which is worth knowing before paying for it.

Will a 45-minute session really be enough?+

For an MYP student it is often better than an hour. Concentration at this age falls away before the clock does, and a focused 45 minutes on one criterion with the descriptor open beats 60 minutes that drifts into conversation. Earlier slots help too: 15:30 or 16:00 is achievable for families whose school sits inside Nad Al Sheba or Sobha Hartland, and an alert student at 16:00 outperforms a tired one at 19:00 by a wide margin.

Can you guarantee my child's MYP grade will improve?+

No, and nobody honest will. What can be committed to is a named diagnosis from the criterion levels, specific practice against the published descriptor rather than against a topic, and a written note after each session saying what was worked and what comes next. The researched set of competitors in this market includes providers promising specific outcomes and publishing self-asserted ratings; both are claims a parent should treat as information about the provider rather than about the outcome.

Send the criterion levels and we can be specific

The fastest way to use an IB MYP tutor in Nad Al Sheba is to skip the converted grade and send the four criterion levels from the last report, with the subject and the MYP year. From those we can usually say in one message whether this is a single broken criterion worth three sessions, a consistent ceiling worth a term, or a self-management pattern that will move several subjects at once. The first lesson is a free diagnostic spent reading the descriptor alongside your child's own work, with a written note afterwards naming what to target.
