IB Home Tutor in Nad Al Sheba

Most families looking for an IB home tutor in Nad Al Sheba are not shopping for a format. They are trying to fix a specific loss of marks and cannot see where it is happening. This page is written around the syllabus rather than around the service: which component each Diploma subject is actually assessed on, which command terms decide the mark, where Nad Al Sheba students lose marks in the sciences and in mathematics, and how past papers should be used on a syllabus that has changed.

  • Component weightings given per subject group, not in general terms
  • IB command terms taught as the mark-scheme vocabulary they are
  • Internal assessment criteria named by letter with mark allocations
  • Trial session at no cost, worked on your child's marked script

IB & IGCSE in Nad Al Sheba

The Diploma is lost in components, not in subjects

A Diploma report that says 4 in Chemistry tells a parent almost nothing. The grade is an aggregate of a multiple-choice paper, a data-based paper, an extended-response paper and an internal investigation, each weighted differently, each failing for different reasons. A student can know the chemistry and still arrive at a 4 because every six-mark question was answered as a description, or because the investigation lost nine of its twenty-four criterion marks on evaluation. Until somebody opens the components, nobody is fixing anything.

That is the work this page describes. Nad Al Sheba families sit within a short drive of several established Diploma schools, and the enquiries we receive from this community are rarely about missing content. They are about a student who understands the material in conversation and underperforms on paper. In almost every case the diagnosis turns out to be one of four things: command-term misreading, calculation presentation, internal-assessment criteria nobody translated, or past-paper practice done without a mark scheme.

Take command terms first, because they are the cheapest fix in the programme. The IB publishes a defined vocabulary and the verb in the question tells the examiner what to award. State wants a bare answer. Outline wants a brief account. Explain requires the reason as well as the effect. Discuss requires a balanced review of several arguments. Evaluate requires judgement against stated criteria. A capable student who answers every verb as though it said describe will produce fluent, informed work and score consistently in the middle bands.

Then calculation presentation. In Mathematics the method marks exist independently of the answer, so a student who writes a chain of numbers and arrives correctly can score less than one who sets out reasoning and makes an arithmetic slip. In the sciences the same applies with units, significant figures and uncertainties attached. Nad Al Sheba students in strong cohorts frequently lose these marks for years without anyone naming the habit, because their final answers are right often enough to mask it.

Third, the internal assessment. Every Diploma subject carries one, usually worth twenty per cent of the grade, and every one is marked against lettered criteria with published mark allocations. The sciences investigation is assessed on research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, six marks each. The mathematics exploration is assessed on presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics. Students who have never read those descriptors routinely submit good work that was never aimed at them.

Fourth, past papers. Working through old papers without the mark scheme is revision theatre. Working through them with the scheme, marking honestly, and recording which criterion or which command term failed is the single most productive hour available in DP2. On several subjects the syllabus has changed recently, so older papers need to be used selectively rather than chronologically, and knowing which parts are still live is part of what a specialist is for.

On format: lessons for Nad Al Sheba families are delivered one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, because visiting tutors are a service we run only in India. The section further down prices what the Dubai in-home market charges and what that premium buys, so the comparison is made with numbers rather than with adjectives.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Nad Al Sheba sits beside both IB continuum schools and British-curriculum schools, so students arrive at the Diploma from two quite different places. The programme a child comes from decides what the first six weeks of tutoring should actually do.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

The IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects across six groups, three at Higher Level and three at Standard, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and creativity, activity and service. Twenty-four points come from the subjects and up to three more from the core, giving a ceiling of forty-five. Most of the diagnostic work on this page concerns the subject components, because that is where thirty-nine of the forty-five points are decided.

Diploma students in Dubai also carry the Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies requirements KHDA places on all private schools in the emirate regardless of licensed curriculum, with instructional time calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. A Nad Al Sheba DP2 week is therefore tighter than the six-subject list implies, which is why tutoring slots here need to be placed rather than merely booked.

MYP-DPAge 16 · Entry to DP1

Arriving from the Middle Years Programme

Students from the MYP bring strong research habits, comfort with documented process and experience of criterion marking, which makes internal assessments easier for them than for their peers. What they commonly lack is procedural fluency: the drilled, repetitive accuracy the Diploma papers demand under time pressure. The first block of tutoring should be arithmetic and algebraic routine, not study skills.

Several schools near Nad Al Sheba run the full IB continuum, so a sizeable share of local DP1 students have never sat a timed external examination of any kind. Building examination stamina is a separate job from teaching content, and it should be scheduled as one.

IGCSE-DPAge 16 · Entry to DP1

Arriving from IGCSE or Year 11 British

The mirror image. These students are fluent in timed papers and accurate under pressure, and they struggle with the extended independent work: the exploration, the investigation, the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge. They have rarely been asked to design their own research question or evaluate their own method. The gap is real, nameable and closes in a term if it is addressed in DP1 rather than discovered in DP2.

The transition also changes the mathematics vocabulary. A student fluent in IGCSE Extended methods meets the graphic display calculator as an assessed tool rather than a convenience, and Paper 1 at Diploma level is sat without one, which catches out students who learned to lean on it.

COREAcross DP1 and DP2

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Three of the forty-five points, and disproportionately stressful for the time they occupy. The Extended Essay runs to a 4,000-word ceiling and is assessed largely on the quality of the research question and the engagement with the process. The TOK essay has a 1,600-word ceiling and the exhibition a 950-word one. Students lose marks on scope rather than on intelligence: questions too broad to answer in the words available.

Supervision sits with a member of staff at your child's school, and an outside tutor works alongside that rather than replacing it. A tutor may question, challenge and give feedback on the student's own writing. A tutor may not write or complete any part of the essay, and no provider should offer to.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below are the Diploma subjects we are asked for most often from this part of Dubai, each with the component that carries the marks and the specific place students lose them. Bring a marked paper and the conversation starts here rather than at the end of a diagnostic month.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Paper 1 is sat without a calculator, which exposes algebraic fluency precisely. At Higher Level Paper 3 presents two extended problem-solving investigations where the first few marks are accessible and the later parts require sustained reasoning. The exploration carries 20%, and its marks are lost on reflection and mathematical communication rather than on the mathematics itself.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

More modelling, more statistics, heavier calculator use. The losses cluster around interpreting output in context: a student produces a regression line and then says nothing about what it means for the situation described. Higher Level Paper 3 rewards students who write about their model, not just about their numbers.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Paper 1 splits into multiple choice and a data-based section; Paper 2 carries the extended responses and the larger weighting. Organic mechanisms, energetics arithmetic and significant-figure discipline cost the most marks. The data booklet is provided and under-used: students who have not practised with it lose time they cannot recover.

Physics

HL and SL

The data-based section of Paper 1 is the most improvable part of the subject and the least revised. Uncertainties, gradients and unit prefixes account for a large share of avoidable losses, and a physics grade is frequently limited by the mathematics course the student chose rather than by their physics.

Biology

HL and SL

Content volume is the visible problem and precision is the real one. Six-mark questions require named structures, named processes and stated directions of movement; general accounts earn a fraction of what is available. The investigation rewards a tightly controlled design over an ambitious one.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper 1 is an unseen guided analysis and Paper 2 a comparative essay on studied texts. The individual oral is assessed on the link between a global issue and specific extracts. Students lose marks by writing about the text rather than about the writer's choices and their effect.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagrams are marks, correctly labelled on both axes with the shift explained in words. At Higher Level Paper 3 is quantitative and is where the grade is most often decided. The internal assessment commentaries fail on the link between the article and the syllabus concept rather than on the economics.

Business Management

HL and SL

Tool application is everything: the question does not ask what a tool is, it asks what the tool shows about the stimulus organisation. Evaluation marks require a judgement with a stated basis, and that final paragraph is the one most candidates omit under time pressure.

History

HL and SL

Source work on Paper 1 is a technique with defined moves: origin, purpose, content, value and limitation. Higher Level Paper 3 demands regional depth that cannot be improvised. The internal assessment is a structured historical investigation with its own sections, each separately assessed.

Psychology

HL and SL

Studies must be used as evidence rather than recounted. The highest-scoring answers name a study briefly and spend the remaining words on what it demonstrates and where it is limited, which is the opposite of how most students revise.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

A 1,600-word essay on a prescribed title and a 950-word exhibition built on three objects. Marks are lost to scope: titles answered in general terms rather than through specific, contrasting examples from two areas of knowledge.

The Extended Essay

Core

Four thousand words, and the research question decides the grade before any writing happens. Questions that are too broad cannot be answered inside the limit, and no amount of good prose rescues them. The reflection sessions with the supervisor carry marks of their own.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of subject work, chosen by what the marked evidence says rather than by preference. Each targets a different component.

Component repair, weekly

A standing hour on the component the marked papers identify as weakest: the data-based section, Paper 3, the unseen analysis, the quantitative paper. Work is done on real questions with the mark scheme open, and the student marks their own attempt before the tutor does, which is where the learning actually sits.

  • One component at a time, named explicitly
  • Student marks first, tutor marks second, the gap is the lesson
  • Command-term discipline embedded in every answer
  • Reviewed against school assessments every few weeks

Internal assessment supervision block

Four to six sessions placed at the school's own internal deadlines, working against the published criteria by letter. The tutor questions the research design, points out where a conclusion is not supported by the data, and gives feedback on the student's own draft. The student writes every word.

  • Criteria named and translated before any drafting
  • Research design challenged early, when changing it is still cheap
  • Evaluation and reflection treated as the marks they are
  • Academic-honesty boundary stated to the student in session one

Past-paper programme for DP2

A structured run through live-syllabus papers under timed conditions, marked to the scheme, with a record of which command term or criterion failed each time. The output is a pattern rather than a score, and the pattern is what tells you where the remaining weeks should go.

  • Only papers that match the current syllabus content
  • Timed, then marked, then re-attempted on the failed question type
  • A written log of failure modes rather than a list of percentages
  • Suits DP2 from the mock results onwards

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Nad Al Sheba

01

What an IB home tutor in Nad Al Sheba is actually hired to fix

  • A grade is an aggregate; the diagnosis lives in the components
  • A DP1 drop after strong IGCSE results is usually the transition
  • Mocks below classwork point at command terms, not at content
  • A stalled internal assessment usually has a question that is too broad

The search phrase is about a format and the problem never is. Families in Nad Al Sheba contact us with one of four situations: a DP1 student whose first reports came back two grades below their MYP or IGCSE level, a DP2 student whose mocks did not match their classwork, an internal assessment deadline approaching with no draft worth submitting, or a Higher Level subject chosen in DP1 that now looks like a mistake. None of those is solved by proximity.

Each of them is solved by reading a marked script. A DP1 collapse after a strong Year 11 is almost always the transition rather than the content: a student who sat IGCSE papers accurately now faces extended independent work, or a student from the MYP now faces timed accuracy. Mocks below classwork point at command terms or at examination stamina. A stalled internal assessment points at a research question that was never narrow enough to answer.

This is the honest answer to the home-tutor question. What a family in Nad Al Sheba needs is not somebody within driving distance; it is somebody who knows which component is failing and what the mark scheme awards there. The Dubai market will sell you either. The rest of this page is written so you can tell the difference before you pay for a term, and so you can audit what any tutor is doing for you after you have. Ask any tutor to name the failing component in writing after the second session; one who still talks only about the subject, rather than about Paper 1, Paper 3 or the internal assessment, has not started the diagnosis yet.

02

Diploma components, subject group by subject group

The weightings below are published by the IB and they should govern how tutoring hours are allocated. The most common misallocation we see is a student spending every session on content recall for a paper worth a third of the grade, while the internal assessment worth a fifth receives nothing until a fortnight before submission. The second most common is Higher Level students ignoring Paper 3 entirely until the mocks reveal it.

Read the table as a budget rather than as information. If your child's weakest component carries the largest weighting, the plan is obvious. If their weakest component carries ten per cent, the honest advice may be to leave it and work elsewhere. Either way the decision requires the numbers, and a surprising number of Diploma families have never seen them laid out for the subjects their child actually takes. Sort the components into two buckets before you plan anything: the share of the grade marked inside the school, and the share marked externally in the June or November session. The internally marked share is the part still open to influence in DP2, because drafts and deadlines are negotiable in a way that an examination timetable is not. The externally marked share rewards technique work started early and almost nothing started late.

One caution on precision. The IB revises subject guides on a rolling cycle, and weightings and component names change with them. Everything here matches the structure Nad Al Sheba schools are currently teaching, but the authoritative source is your child's subject guide, held by the school. Ask the coordinator for the current version before building a revision plan on any figure, including these ones.

Command terms: the vocabulary that decides the mark

The IB publishes command terms and groups them by the level of thinking they require. The verb is not decoration. It is the instruction to the examiner about what to credit, and a mark scheme written for discuss will not award marks to an answer that describes, however accurate the description. This is the single most reliable cause of a capable student scoring in the middle bands across several subjects at once.

The pattern is easy to spot once you look for it. Ask your child to read a six-mark question aloud and say what the verb is asking for before answering. Students who have never been taught the distinction will answer explain and evaluate identically. Students who have will produce visibly different shapes of answer: a causal chain for one, a weighed judgement with a stated basis for the other.

Fixing it is a technique job measured in weeks, not a content job measured in terms, which makes it the best-value work in the whole Diploma. It also transfers across every subject group simultaneously, so a student who learns to read command terms in Biology stops losing the same marks in History. The table sets out the terms that cost Nad Al Sheba students the most, with what an examiner is looking for in each case. Keep a one-page list of the command terms that appear most often in your child's written feedback and check it against the current subject guide. Where the teacher's shorthand and the guide differ, the guide wins: it is the document the examiner was trained against.

Where Nad Al Sheba students lose marks in the Diploma sciences

The data-based section of Paper 1 is the most improvable part of a Diploma science and almost nobody revises it. It tests graph reading, gradient calculation, uncertainty handling and the ability to say what a data set does and does not support. None of that requires remembering the syllabus, which means marks are available to a student who is behind on content, and lost by a student who is ahead on it but has never practised the skill.

Significant figures and units are the next layer. Science mark schemes award the final mark for a correctly expressed answer, and a correct number with the wrong number of significant figures or a dropped prefix does not get it. Students in strong Nad Al Sheba cohorts lose these marks for two years, because their answers are right often enough that no teacher flags the habit, and the cost appears only in aggregate at the end.

The scientific investigation is the third. It is worth twenty per cent and assessed on four criteria — research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation — with six marks each. Students pour effort into the practical work and the write-up of results, then lose heavily on evaluation, which asks for the limitations of the method and improvements that are specific rather than generic. More apparatus would help is not a mark. Naming the uncontrolled variable and how it would be controlled is.

The data booklet is the quiet fourth. It is provided in the examination and students who have not worked with it routinely spend minutes locating constants and relationships they should be able to find instantly. Practising with the booklet in hand, on timed questions, converts directly into marks and costs nothing but the habit.

05

Where Nad Al Sheba students lose marks in Diploma mathematics

  • Paper 1 is sat with no calculator at SL and HL
  • Method marks are awarded independently of the final answer
  • Higher Level Paper 3 carries 20% and is the least practised component
  • Exploration marks are lost on reflection and communication, not on mathematics

Paper 1 is sat without a calculator at both levels, and that single fact explains most of the Diploma mathematics problems we are asked to solve in this part of Dubai. Students arriving from IGCSE or from the MYP have usually learned to reach for a calculator at the first sign of arithmetic. Removing it exposes fraction work, surd manipulation, factorising and index laws, and a student can know every topic on the syllabus and still fail to finish the paper.

Method marks are the second theme. A mark scheme awards credit for setting up the correct expression, for the correct substitution, for the correct manipulation, independently of whether the final number is right. A student who writes only a line of working and a final answer surrenders all of those when the arithmetic slips. Teaching a student to write reasoning they consider unnecessary is unglamorous work and it is worth several grade boundaries.

At Higher Level, Paper 3 is the component that decides grades. It presents two long investigations where the opening parts are approachable and the later parts require sustained argument across a problem the student has not seen before. It is also the component most often left unpractised until the mocks, which is when families typically contact us. Six weeks of Paper 3 work in DP2 is a defensible purchase; two weeks is triage.

The exploration completes the picture. Twenty per cent of the grade, assessed on presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics. The mathematics is rarely the problem. Reflection is, because students describe what they did rather than what they learned about the mathematics, and mathematical communication is, because notation is inconsistent and variables are never defined.

06

Languages, humanities and the core: the other half of the Diploma

In Language A the recurring fault is writing about the text rather than about the writer. Paper 1 presents an unseen passage with a guiding question, and the marks sit in the analysis of specific choices and their effect on a specific reader. A student who paraphrases the passage accurately and comments generally on its mood will score consistently in the middle. The individual oral fails for a related reason: a global issue asserted rather than demonstrated through the chosen extracts.

In Economics and Business Management the losses are mechanical and therefore cheap to fix. Diagrams must be fully labelled on both axes with the shift explained in words beside them; an unlabelled diagram earns nothing however correct its shape. Evaluation requires a judgement with a stated basis, which is the paragraph students omit when time runs short, and it is usually the paragraph carrying the top band. At Higher Level, the quantitative paper in Economics is where a grade is most often decided.

In History, Paper 1 source work is a defined technique: origin, purpose, content, then value and limitation derived from the first three. Students who describe what a source says, without saying what kind of source it is or why it was produced, lose most of the available marks on a component they could have been drilled for. Higher Level Paper 3 requires regional depth that cannot be improvised in the final weeks.

The core is where the three remaining points sit. The TOK essay runs to 1,600 words on a prescribed title and the exhibition to 950 words on three objects, and the Extended Essay to 4,000. All three are decided by scope: a question narrow enough to answer in the words available. A tutor can challenge a question, test whether it is answerable and give feedback on the student's own writing. A tutor may not write or complete any part of the essay, and the student should hear that said plainly at the start.

07

The internal assessment: criteria, letters and the line

Every Diploma subject carries an internal assessment, and every one is marked against lettered criteria with published mark allocations. This is public information that a large share of students have never been shown. They produce work aimed at what they imagine a good piece looks like, when the marks are awarded against a specific list, and the gap between those two things is where twenty per cent of the grade quietly disappears.

The arithmetic is worth stating. A sciences investigation is twenty-four criterion marks across four criteria. Losing three marks on evaluation and two on data analysis is five of twenty-four, which is a fifth of that component and four per cent of the final subject grade. Across three sciences, that is the difference between a Diploma total that reaches a university offer and one that does not, and it was all available to a student who read the descriptors in advance.

The honesty boundary is simple and we say it out loud in the first supervision session. A tutor may question a research design, point out that a conclusion is not supported by the data presented, explain what an evaluation criterion is asking for, and give feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor may not write the internal assessment, may not draft the exploration, and may not edit either to completion. That is malpractice under IB rules and the consequence falls on the student, not on the tutor.

A provider offering completed coursework should be refused on that basis alone, and they exist in this market. Our position is a differentiator rather than a limitation: a student who has been talked through a criterion understands it for the next assessment too, and there are five more of those coming.

In-home or online for a Nad Al Sheba Diploma student

Parents using this search phrase deserve the market position stated rather than deflected. Dubai prices an in-home one-to-one visit at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour, against AED 150 to 300 for an equivalent qualified tutor working online, with IB and A Level specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above. Advertised monthly in-home packages of four two-hour sessions have run at AED 1,599 to 1,799. The premium is travel time converted into fee.

For a Diploma student the premium also buys a narrower choice, and the narrowing matters more here than at any other level. The specific need is rarely a tutor, it is a tutor who knows Higher Level Paper 3 in Analysis and Approaches, or the current sciences investigation criteria, or Higher Level Economics Paper 3. The set of people with that expertise who will also drive to Nad Al Sheba on a Tuesday evening is small, and may be empty. Choosing from it means choosing on geography.

IB Gram does not sell home visits in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE; visiting tutors are a service we operate only in India. Diploma sessions for Nad Al Sheba families run one-to-one over live video to Gulf Standard Time, with the student's own marked script shared on screen. For component repair that format is better than a kitchen table, because the paper, the mark scheme and the student's redraft can all be visible simultaneously, which is exactly how this work is done.

Past papers used properly on a syllabus that has changed

  • Timed first, self-marked second, tutor-marked third
  • Log the failure mode, not the percentage
  • Six logged papers reveal a pattern no lesson observation will
  • Older papers need filtering against the current guide, not working through in order

Most Diploma students work through past papers and most do it in a way that produces very little. The pattern is familiar: attempt a paper untimed, check the answers, note the score, move on. That measures the student and teaches nothing. The productive version is timed, then self-marked against the scheme before anyone else sees it, then logged by failure mode: command term misread, method not shown, criterion misunderstood, content gap, ran out of time.

After six papers logged that way, a pattern appears that no amount of lesson observation would produce. One student loses eleven marks to unshown method and two to content. Another loses everything on the final extended-response question because they reach it with four minutes left. Those two students need completely different plans, and the log is what tells you which you have. It is also the cheapest diagnostic instrument in the Diploma, because it costs the student's own time rather than a tutor's hour.

The syllabus caveat is important in the sciences and in mathematics particularly, where recent guide revisions mean older papers contain content that is no longer examinable and omit components that now exist. Working chronologically backwards through a decade of papers therefore wastes effort and, worse, builds confidence on questions that will not appear. Knowing which older papers remain useful and which sections of them to skip is a genuine part of what subject expertise buys.

One practical limit: we do not supply papers, mark schemes or subject guides. Those are published by the International Baccalaureate and are available to your child through their school and the coordinator. We work from the material the student legitimately holds, and we reference the official sources rather than reproducing them.

Where we tutor

Nad Al Sheba and the central corridor

Students on this page live across the belt of communities that share the Nad Al Sheba and Sobha Hartland school clusters. The detail that changes between them is the school day and the evening commute, which decides when subject work can realistically happen.

Nad Al Sheba 1 to 4

Villa communities with short runs to the schools on their own boundary, which is why a 4:30pm session is realistic here where it is not further west. Diploma students from this pocket often sit three Higher Levels.

Meydan

Immediately adjacent and sharing the same schools, so the assessment calendars are identical and the internal deadlines land in the same weeks. Families frequently compare notes across the two communities.

Mohammed Bin Rashid City

A newer corridor with longer internal drives than the map suggests. Later starts, from 5:30pm, are the norm for Diploma students living here.

Sobha Hartland

Reached across the creek road, with its own school provision inside the community. A noticeable number of students here are on the bilingual Diploma route, which changes the language-group brief entirely.

Business Bay and Downtown Dubai

Apartment households with students commuting out to the Nad Al Sheba cluster. The return journey is the constraint, and 6:00pm slots are common.

Al Quoz and Al Quoz 4

Mixed housing with quick access to the central corridor schools. Enquiries from here skew towards Higher Level sciences and mathematics together.

Al Jaddaf and Culture Village

Close to the creek-side schools, which makes an early-evening slot straightforward. Bilingual and continuum provision nearby shapes the subject mix we see.

Nad Al Hamar and Ras Al Khor

The eastern edge of this catchment, with students split between the central corridor and the eastern suburbs. Scheduling here benefits most from a fixed weekly slot rather than a flexible one.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Nad Al Sheba

Nad Al Sheba and Meydan

Established private schools on or inside the community boundary running British and International Baccalaureate routes. Students we support attend schools in this cluster, and the internal assessment deadlines they work to are set by those schools rather than by the IB, which is why a tutoring plan has to be built around a specific calendar.

  • Repton School Dubai
  • GEMS Modern Academy
  • Kent College Dubai
  • Dubai Modern Education School

Sobha Hartland and the creek side

A few minutes north along the creek road, with British, IB and bilingual Diploma provision. Families regularly consider schools in both clusters, which is how siblings in one villa end up on different programmes with different assessment vocabularies.

  • Hartland International School
  • North London Collegiate School Dubai
  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai
  • Deira International School

Schools are named as context for the Nad Al Sheba education market; IB Gram claims no affiliation, partnership or endorsement with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send a marked script, not a report

The most useful thing you can send is one recently marked paper or internal assessment draft with the teacher's annotations on it, plus the subject and level. That single document usually tells us more than a term of grade summaries, because it shows where marks were available and not awarded.

  2. 02

A diagnostic session at no cost

The first session is free and is spent on that script. The tutor identifies the failure mode — command terms, method presentation, a criterion, examination timing or a genuine content gap — and tells you which, in writing. Those five need different plans and different numbers of hours.

  3. 03

Name the component the hours will target

We agree which component the work is aimed at and why, using the published weightings for your child's actual subjects. If the weak component carries ten per cent of the grade and a stronger one carries forty, we will say that the obvious target is not the obvious one.

  4. 04

Work on the student's own material

Sessions use your child's school assessments, their internal assessment drafts and papers they legitimately hold, with the mark scheme open. We do not substitute generic worksheets, and we do not distribute IB papers, mark schemes or subject guides, which are the organisation's to publish.

  5. 05

Review on marked evidence every few weeks

Every four to six weeks we look at the failure-mode log and the school's own assessments and recommend continuing, switching component, or stopping. A plan that cannot show which marks it has recovered is not a plan worth renewing.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Component-level diagnosis before any schedule

A Diploma grade is an aggregate of differently weighted parts, so the first job is naming which part is failing. We do that on a marked script in the first session and tell you in writing, because a tutoring plan built on a subject name rather than a component is a guess with an invoice attached.

Criteria and command terms taught as the mark scheme states them

Internal assessment criteria have letters and published mark allocations, and command terms are instructions to the examiner. Both are public and both are routinely unread. Translating them is short work with a long return, and it transfers across every subject your child takes.

A tutor chosen for the component, not the commute

Online delivery means the pool for Higher Level Paper 3 in Analysis and Approaches is everyone who teaches it, rather than the handful willing to drive to Nad Al Sheba in the evening. For a narrow Higher Level need, that difference decides whether a suitable tutor exists at all.

An explicit academic-honesty boundary

A tutor questions, challenges, explains criteria and gives feedback on the student's own work. We do not write, draft or edit to completion any internal assessment, exploration, Extended Essay or TOK essay. Under IB rules that is malpractice and the consequences fall on your child.

No reproduction of board material

Subject guides, past papers and mark schemes are published by the International Baccalaureate and should be obtained through your child's school and coordinator. We reference and explain them and cite the official source; we do not host or distribute them.

The permit position, stated without being asked

Private tuition in the UAE operates under a MoHRE private tutor work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. Ask any tutor to show theirs. IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK or Ministry of Education approval and claims none.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Nad Al Sheba: your questions answered

My child understands the subject but the Diploma grades do not show it. Where is that going wrong?+

Four causes account for most cases. Command terms misread, so every verb is answered as though it said describe. Method not shown, so mark schemes cannot award the credit that exists independently of the final answer. Internal assessment criteria never translated, so twenty per cent of the grade was aimed at nothing in particular. Or examination timing, where the final extended-response question is reached with minutes left. All four are visible on a single marked script, which is why we ask for one before quoting any plan.

Which Diploma component is the most improvable for the hours spent?+

In the sciences, the data-based section of Paper 1. It tests graph reading, gradients, uncertainties and what a data set supports, none of which requires syllabus recall, so marks are available even to a student who is behind on content. In mathematics, method presentation on Paper 1. In the humanities, source technique on History Paper 1 and diagram labelling in Economics. All of those are habits rather than knowledge, and habits move in weeks where content takes terms.

What exactly are the criteria on a Diploma sciences investigation?+

Four, each worth six marks, giving twenty-four in total: research design, data analysis, conclusion, and evaluation. Research design wants a focused question with named and controlled variables and a method somebody else could repeat. Data analysis wants processing with uncertainties carried through. Conclusion wants a judgement the data actually supports, related to accepted science. Evaluation wants specific limitations of the method with specific realistic improvements, which is where most students lose the most, because generic suggestions earn nothing.

Why does my child lose marks when their final answers are correct?+

Because a large share of Diploma marks are method marks, awarded for setting up the correct expression, substituting correctly and manipulating correctly, regardless of the number at the end. A student who writes two lines and a correct answer collects fewer of those than one who sets out reasoning and slips on arithmetic. In the sciences the same pattern appears with units, significant figures and prefixes: the final mark is for a correctly expressed answer, and a right number wrongly expressed does not earn it.

Is Higher Level Paper 3 worth paying for separately?+

In mathematics, usually yes. It carries twenty per cent of the Higher Level grade, presents two extended investigations on unfamiliar problems, and is the component most often left unpractised until the mocks reveal it. Six weeks of structured Paper 3 work in DP2 is a defensible purchase with a clear target. Two weeks before the papers is damage limitation. In Economics and History the equivalent third papers carry even heavier weightings, so the same logic applies with more urgency.

How should a DP2 student actually use past papers?+

Timed first, self-marked against the scheme second, and tutor-marked third, with a written log of the failure mode for each lost mark: command term, method not shown, criterion misunderstood, content gap, or time. After six papers logged that way a pattern appears that no amount of lesson observation would produce, and the pattern decides where the remaining weeks go. Checking answers and recording a score measures the student and teaches nothing, which is how most students spend the time.

Do older past papers still work after a syllabus revision?+

Partly, and the filtering matters. Recent guide revisions in the sciences and mathematics mean older papers contain content no longer examinable and omit components that now exist, so working chronologically backwards through a decade wastes effort and builds confidence on questions that will not appear. Knowing which older papers remain useful, and which sections to skip inside them, is a real part of what subject expertise buys. Your child's coordinator holds the current subject guide, which is the authority on what is live.

What can a tutor legitimately do with an Extended Essay?+

Question the research question hard, which is where the grade is actually decided, and test whether it can be answered inside 4,000 words. Explain what the assessment criteria reward. Point out where an argument is asserted rather than evidenced, and give feedback on writing the student has produced. What a tutor may not do is write or complete any part of it, or edit it to completion. Supervision sits with a member of staff at the school, and an outside tutor works alongside that rather than in place of it.

My child is in DP1 and the first reports dropped two grades from Year 11. Is that normal?+

It is common and it is usually structural rather than academic. A student fluent in IGCSE papers now faces extended independent work they have never been asked for: a research question of their own, a method of their own, an evaluation of their own. A student from the MYP faces the opposite problem, meeting timed accuracy for the first time. Identify which transition your child is in, because the two need opposite first blocks, and treating one as the other wastes a term.

Does the maths course my child chose limit their science grade?+

It can, particularly in Physics. The data-based and calculation-heavy parts of a Diploma science assume comfort with rearrangement, standard form, logarithms and gradient work, and a student on the lighter mathematics route can hit a ceiling in Physics that looks like a physics problem and is not. The practical consequence is that a physics tutoring plan sometimes starts with mathematics. We will say so if that is what the marked script shows, even though it is not what the enquiry asked for.

How many marks is it actually worth translating the criteria?+

More than most families expect. A sciences investigation is twenty-four criterion marks. Dropping three on evaluation and two on data analysis is five of twenty-four, which is a fifth of a component worth twenty per cent, so roughly four per cent of the final subject grade. Repeat that across three sciences and it is the difference between a Diploma total that clears a university offer and one that does not. Reading the descriptors in advance costs one session.

Can the individual oral be prepared for, or is it improvised?+

It is highly preparable, and students who treat it as a conversation underperform. The assessment rewards a clear global issue genuinely demonstrated through the chosen extracts, with specific textual detail used as evidence rather than mentioned. The failure mode is asserting the issue and then summarising the texts. Structured preparation means choosing extracts that actually carry the issue, building the argument around specific lines, and rehearsing to time so the closing analysis is not lost.

What does the data booklet change about science revision?+

It changes what is worth memorising and what is worth practising. Constants and relationships that are provided in the examination do not need committing to memory, but finding them quickly under time pressure does need rehearsing. Students who have never worked with the booklet lose minutes locating what they should find instantly, and those minutes come out of the extended-response questions at the end of the paper. Practising timed questions with the booklet open converts directly into marks and costs nothing.

Is an in-home Diploma tutor in Nad Al Sheba better than an online one?+

The Dubai market charges roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour for in-home visits against AED 150 to 300 for an equivalent qualified tutor online, and that gap is travel priced into the hour. For Diploma work the bigger cost is the narrowing: the people who know Higher Level Paper 3 or the current investigation criteria and will also drive to Nad Al Sheba in the evening are few. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; sessions run over live video to Gulf Standard Time with the marked script on screen.

Will a tutor supply IB past papers and mark schemes for us?+

No. Subject guides, past papers and mark schemes are published by the International Baccalaureate and are available to your child through their school and the Diploma coordinator. Reproducing or distributing them is a copyright matter and, for unreleased material, an academic-integrity one. We work from the papers and schemes the student legitimately holds, cite the official source when we reference anything, and point you to the coordinator for material you do not have.

Send one marked script and the diagnosis is most of the work

If a Diploma student in Nad Al Sheba is underperforming, the thing standing between you and a plan is not a tutor. It is knowing which component is losing the marks and why. Send one recently marked paper or internal assessment draft with the subject and level, and the trial session will tell you whether the fault is command terms, method presentation, a criterion nobody translated, examination timing or genuine content. Those five need different plans and very different numbers of hours, and you should know which one you are buying before you buy it.
