IB Chemistry Tutor in Nad Al Sheba

An IB chemistry tutor in Nad Al Sheba should be able to name the trap before the student falls into it. This page is written from the syllabus rather than around it: the Structure and Reactivity themes, the sign conventions that cost two marks at a time, what the data booklet gives you and what must be memorised, how organic mechanisms are marked, and the past-paper strategy the current syllabus allows. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

Chemistry marks are lost in specific places, and they are nameable

Chemistry is the Diploma science where a student can understand the material well and still score two grades below their ability, because the subject punishes imprecision more than it punishes ignorance. A sign the wrong way round in an enthalpy calculation. A state symbol missing from an ionic equation. An explanation of a trend that describes the trend instead of explaining it. A mechanism drawn correctly with an arrow starting from the wrong place. Each of those costs one or two marks, and a paper contains a dozen opportunities for them.

That is why this page is written from the syllabus outward. Rather than describing what a chemistry tutor does in general, it sets out the specific places where marks go missing in the current Structure and Reactivity course, what the mark scheme is actually looking for in each case, what the data booklet supplies and what has to be in the student's head, and how to use the limited stock of past papers that exist for a syllabus with only a few sittings behind it.

Nad Al Sheba sits in a dense school corridor. Repton School Dubai, Kings' School Nad Al Sheba and GEMS Modern Academy are inside the district; Hartland International School and North London Collegiate School Dubai are in Sobha Hartland; Swiss International Scientific School Dubai is at Al Jaddaf. Dubai held 387,441 private-school students across 227 schools in 2024-25, with the IB at around 7% of enrolment among seventeen licensed curricula. Chemistry Higher Level is one of the more popular Diploma sciences, which means class sizes are reasonable and individual attention on mechanism detail is still scarce.

A syllabus note that matters for tutoring. The course was restructured into two organising themes, Structure and Reactivity, replacing the older numbered-topic and options arrangement, and Higher Level extension content is examined inside those themes alongside the core rather than in a separate paper. A tutor still teaching from the old structure will cover the right chemistry in the wrong order and will leave a Higher Level student thinking the extension material is a later problem. It is not: it appears in the same questions.

IB Gram delivers tuition to UAE families as one-to-one lessons over live video, and does not send tutors to addresses in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Chemistry gains something specific from that format. Mechanisms, lattice diagrams, titration curves and energy profiles are drawings, and a shared screen keeps the student's own drawing, the examiner's wording and a corrected version side by side without anything being redrawn or passed across a table.

One instruction worth following before any of it. Bring the most recent marked piece of written chemistry — a topic test, a mock paper, a returned equation question — rather than a report card. A grade says how large the gap is; the annotations say whether the student is losing marks to content they never met, to wording the scheme does not accept, or to running out of minutes on the back page of Paper 2. In chemistry the second of those is by far the most common, and it is also the cheapest to fix.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Four stages shape a Diploma chemistry grade, and the habits that decide it are formed earlier than most families expect. These are the stages Nad Al Sheba students pass through, described by the chemistry demand each one creates.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

MYP Sciences

Four criteria out of 8 each, including scientific inquiry and reflection on the impacts of science. The chemistry-relevant warning sign is a student who scores well on knowing and understanding and poorly on communicating: chemistry marks turn on precise written explanation more than any other science, and a student who can do the chemistry but writes loosely will lose marks from DP1 onwards.

In several schools around Nad Al Sheba, MYP runs straight into the Diploma, so the school controls pacing and the transition is invisible from outside. The specific gap this creates in chemistry is the mole: MYP treats quantitative chemistry lightly, and DP1 assumes fluency with it from the first weeks of the Reactivity themes.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Chemistry as the alternative route

Cambridge 0620 or Pearson 4CH1 depending on the school. Students arriving in DP1 from IGCSE chemistry have met bonding, the mole and basic organic chemistry, and have been trained to give more detail than an IB mark scheme awards. They also arrive with no exposure to the sign conventions in energetics, which is the first real trap of DP1.

Students in this corridor arrive in Diploma chemistry from both IGCSE and MYP, often in the same class. The two groups fail differently: IGCSE students over-write and over-rely on remembered phrases, MYP students under-specify. A tutor should ask which route the student came by in the first session, because the correction runs in opposite directions.

IB Chemistry, Diploma Programme

Two organising themes. Structure covers the particulate nature of matter, bonding and structure, and the classification of matter. Reactivity covers what drives reactions, how much and how fast and how far, and the mechanisms of chemical change. Paper 1 carries 36%, Paper 2 carries 44% and the investigation carries 20%. Standard Level runs 150 teaching hours, Higher Level 240.

UAE schools sit the May session. Dubai Diploma students also carry KHDA's mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies lessons alongside six subjects, Theory of Knowledge and CAS, which compresses laboratory time as well as study time. No specific IB date appears on this page; confirm each with your school's IB coordinator or on ibo.org.

What the chemistry grade is for

Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, chemical engineering and most life-science degrees specify chemistry, frequently at Higher Level with a minimum grade. That makes chemistry the Diploma subject where a one-grade shortfall most often changes an outcome, and it is why families in this corridor treat it with more urgency than they treat other subjects.

Read the published prerequisite for the specific programme and institution rather than relying on a general rule, because requirements differ and are revised. Separately, Ministry of Education equivalency governs applications to universities inside the UAE, and no IB points threshold is published on a source this project could verify — check moe.gov.ae directly.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Chemistry is one subject with two themes and a short list of places where marks reliably disappear. Below are the syllabus areas Nad Al Sheba students bring, each described by the trap rather than by the content list.

Structure 1: Models of the particulate nature of matter

HL and SL, HL extension included

The mole, concentration, gas behaviour and the ideal gas equation, plus atomic structure and electron configuration. The trap is unit handling: a concentration in grams per cubic decimetre fed into a calculation expecting moles produces a confident wrong answer that the method marks cannot rescue.

Structure 2: Models of bonding and structure

HL and SL, HL extension included

Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding, intermolecular forces, shapes of molecules and at Higher Level formal charge and hybridisation. Students lose marks by naming a force rather than explaining its strength relative to another, which is almost always what the question asked for.

Structure 3: Classification of matter

HL and SL, HL extension included

The periodic table, periodicity, trends, and organic and inorganic classification. Trend questions are where description substitutes for explanation most often: stating that atomic radius decreases across a period scores nothing without the nuclear charge and shielding reasoning behind it.

Reactivity 1: What drives chemical reactions?

HL and SL, HL extension included

Enthalpy, Hess cycles, bond enthalpies, entropy and Gibbs free energy at Higher Level. The sign convention is the single most expensive trap in the course: exothermic negative, bond breaking endothermic, and a Hess cycle traversed the wrong way producing an answer correct in magnitude and wrong in sign.

Reactivity 2: How much, how fast and how far?

HL and SL, HL extension included

Reaction rates, collision theory, equilibrium, the equilibrium constant and at Higher Level rate laws and the Arrhenius relationship. Le Chatelier questions reward naming which way the position shifts and why in terms of the system's response, not merely restating the stress applied.

Reactivity 3: Mechanisms of chemical change

HL and SL, HL extension included

Proton transfer, acids and bases, electron transfer and redox, electrochemical cells, and organic mechanisms. Mechanism marks are awarded for curly arrows starting from the correct electron source and ending at the correct destination, so a correct product drawn with sloppy arrows scores partially at best.

Organic chemistry

HL and SL, substantially extended at HL

Functional groups, nomenclature, reaction pathways, and at Higher Level nucleophilic substitution routes, elimination and stereochemistry. Conditions and reagents carry marks: a correct transformation without the reagent and condition named is an incomplete answer, and students routinely learn the pathway and not the conditions.

Acids, bases and pH calculations

HL and SL, HL extension included

Strong and weak behaviour, pH and pKa, buffers and titration curves at Higher Level. The common loss is treating a weak acid as fully dissociated, and the second is reading a titration curve without identifying the half-equivalence point, which is where the pKa is read from.

Redox and electrochemistry

HL and SL, HL extension included

Oxidation states, half-equations, voltaic and electrolytic cells and at Higher Level electrode potentials and the Nernst-style reasoning. Half-equations must balance for charge as well as atoms, and most lost marks here are charge imbalance rather than conceptual error.

The data-based section of Paper 1

Part of the 36% Paper 1

Experimental data, graphs, uncertainty and evaluation of method, structurally predictable and under-practised in most schools. Uncertainty propagation and reading a gradient with error are mechanical once taught, which makes this the best return on tutoring time in the subject.

The scientific investigation

20% at both levels

An individual experimental or data-based investigation marked on four criteria over 24 marks with a 3,000-word limit. In chemistry the recurring weakness is a research question that cannot be answered by the method chosen, which is a design fault no amount of good data collection repairs.

Spectroscopy and instrumental analysis

HL and SL, extended at HL

Infrared, mass spectrometry and proton nuclear magnetic resonance used together to deduce a structure. The data booklet supplies the reference values, so the examined skill is interpretation and combination rather than recall — which makes it one of the most learnable mark sources in the course.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Chemistry support takes three shapes, and the right one depends on whether the diagnosis is content, precision or the investigation. All three are live one-to-one video sessions with a named tutor working to the current syllabus.

Weekly theme session

One tutor, one weekly slot on Gulf Standard Time, working the theme the school is currently on. For Higher Level students the extension content is taught inside each theme as the papers examine it, rather than saved for a separate push, because extension questions appear beside core ones and sometimes within the same question.

  • Level and current theme confirmed before the first session
  • Sign conventions and state symbols enforced from the start
  • Tracks the school's scheme of work and next assessment
  • A free trial lesson before anything is booked

Mechanism and precision blocks

Three or four sessions on the places chemistry punishes imprecision: curly arrow origins and destinations, state symbols in ionic equations, conditions and reagents on organic pathways, charge balance in half-equations. Each is a habit rather than a concept, and habits respond to drilling in a way that explanation alone does not.

  • The student's own written answers marked strictly against the scheme
  • Arrow origin and destination corrected on a shared screen
  • Conditions and reagents tested as part of every pathway
  • The block ends after three or four sessions

Investigation feedback sessions

Scheduled around the school's internal deadlines rather than weekly. The tutor reads the student's own draft against the four criteria and gives written feedback on whether the research question can be answered by the method, on data treatment, on the conclusion and on the evaluation. Nothing is written, designed or supplied.

  • Research question tested against the method before data collection
  • Feedback mapped to the four criteria and their 24 marks
  • The 3,000-word limit checked against the current subject guide
  • No text, data or analysis produced for the student

Structure and Reactivity: what the current syllabus actually contains

The course is organised into two themes rather than numbered topics with options, and understanding that shape changes how revision should be built. Structure covers three areas: models of the particulate nature of matter, models of bonding and structure, and the classification of matter. Reactivity covers three more: what drives chemical reactions, how much and how fast and how far, and the mechanisms of chemical change.

The organising idea is that reactivity is explained by structure, so questions deliberately cross between the two. A question about why one compound reacts faster than another is a Reactivity question answered with Structure content. Students who revise the six areas as six separate blocks find the papers harder than they should, because the papers were written on the assumption that the connections are the point.

Higher Level extension content sits inside these themes and is examined alongside the core, which has a scheduling consequence worth stating plainly. A Higher Level student cannot secure the core and then add the extension, because a single Paper 2 question can require both. Any revision plan that treats extension material as a separate later block is building in a failure mode, and that is still a common way for it to be taught.

For a tutoring plan the practical reading of the table below is this: find which theme the student's lost marks cluster in, then find whether the loss is content or precision. The two have different remedies, and chemistry produces far more precision losses than any other Diploma science. A student losing marks across all six areas evenly almost always has a precision problem rather than six content problems.

The mark-scheme traps, named one by one

Chemistry examiners mark to very specific wording, and the gap between an answer a teacher would accept and an answer the scheme awards is wider in this subject than in physics or biology. Most students in Nad Al Sheba lose a consistent set of marks across every paper they sit, and the set is small enough to list and drill.

The expensive ones share a feature: the chemistry is right and the expression is incomplete. An enthalpy value correct in magnitude and wrong in sign. An ionic equation without state symbols. A trend described rather than explained. A mechanism whose product is correct but whose arrows begin in the wrong place. A half-equation balanced for atoms and not for charge. None of these indicate a student who does not understand chemistry; all of them cost marks every single time.

Drilling them works because they are habits. The method is to mark the student's own written answers strictly, against the actual scheme, with the student watching, and to award nothing where the scheme awards nothing. That lands harder than any explanation. A student who has watched a correct answer score two out of four because a state symbol was missing does not omit state symbols again.

The table below is the list worth working through in the first month of any chemistry support, whatever the student's level. It takes three or four sessions and it applies to every paper they will ever sit, which makes it unusually good value compared with another pass through a theme.

The data booklet: what is given and what must be learned

Students are issued a data booklet in the examination, and a surprising number of them do not know what is in it. That has two costs. They waste revision hours memorising values that will be supplied, and they arrive in the hall unable to find the table they need quickly enough. Both are solvable in a single session and almost nobody does it.

What the booklet supplies, broadly, is reference data: the periodic table, physical constants, enthalpy and bond data, electrode potentials, acid and base constants, and the spectroscopic reference values used for infrared, mass spectrometry and proton nuclear magnetic resonance. What it does not supply is anything requiring judgement — definitions, mechanism conditions, reagents, qualitative test results, naming conventions and the reasoning that connects any of it.

The practical exercise is to sit the student down with the booklet their school issues and have them find, under time pressure, the five tables they will most often need. The spectroscopy section in particular rewards familiarity: structure-deduction questions combining infrared, mass spectra and proton nuclear magnetic resonance are among the most learnable mark sources in the course precisely because the reference values are given and the examined skill is interpretation.

A note on materials generally. We reference and link official sources at ibo.org and do not host, reproduce or distribute IB syllabus documents, data booklets, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables; they are the board's copyright and some are unreleased. Your school issues the booklet and holds licensed access to papers, and a session works from those copies rather than from anything we supply.

Organic chemistry: pathways, conditions and arrows

  • Reagents and conditions carry marks alongside the product
  • Curly arrows must begin at a lone pair or a bond, not at an atom
  • Learn pathways as one labelled map, redrawn from memory each session
  • Test by giving a start and an end and asking for the route
  • Stereochemistry at HL is a drawing problem, not a definition problem

Organic chemistry decides more Higher Level chemistry grades than any other part of the course, and it is the part students most often learn at half depth. The usual pattern is a student who knows that an alcohol can be converted to a carboxylic acid and cannot say with what, under what conditions, or by what mechanism. The pathway alone is worth a fraction of the available marks.

Three things carry the marks. First, reagents and conditions, named specifically: the scheme does not accept a vague oxidising agent where a named reagent and a condition were required. Second, mechanism arrows, which must start at the electron source — a lone pair or a bond — and end where those electrons go. A correct product with arrows from the wrong origin scores partially at best. Third, at Higher Level, the distinction between substitution routes and the structural factors that decide which one operates.

The way to learn it is as a map rather than a list. Build a single diagram of functional groups with the arrows between them labelled with reagent and condition, have the student redraw it from memory each session, and test it by giving them a start and an end and asking for the route. On a shared screen that diagram can be built up over several sessions and kept, which works better than a page in a notebook that gets rewritten and lost.

Stereochemistry at Higher Level is the other recurring gap, and it is usually a visualisation problem rather than a knowledge problem. Students can state what an enantiomer is and cannot identify one in a drawn structure under time pressure. Drawing practice, not definition practice, is the fix, and it is another case where a screen beats paper because the same structure can be rotated and redrawn without starting again.

Past papers on a syllabus with a short history

  • Current-syllabus papers are scarce; spend them deliberately
  • One timed section, marked line by line, beats a whole untimed paper
  • Sort every lost mark: content, precision, slip, timing
  • Older papers are useful only where the content survived the restructuring
  • Papers come from the school or the board, never from us

The current Structure and Reactivity syllabus has only a few sittings behind it, which changes past-paper strategy in a way most revision advice has not caught up with. There is not an unlimited stock of papers on this specification, so they cannot be used the way a student uses IGCSE papers — front to back, generously self-marked, as a way of filling time.

The correct approach is to treat the available current-syllabus papers as scarce and expensive, and to spend them deliberately. Sit one section under real timed conditions. Mark it against the official scheme line by line. Sort every lost mark into content not known, precision lost, calculation slip, or ran out of time. Only then decide what the next fortnight is for. A paper burned without being marked properly has taught the student how it feels to sit a paper, which they already knew.

Specimen material and older papers still have uses, with a caveat. Questions on content that survived the restructuring are perfectly good practice, and the mark schemes from earlier series still show how examiners reward precision, which is the transferable lesson. Questions on content that moved or was removed are a waste of a student's evening and occasionally teach something now wrong. A tutor who knows the specification can separate the two quickly; a student cannot.

The materials themselves come from the school's licensed access or the board's own platform. We reference ibo.org and do not host, reproduce or distribute papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables or subject guides, because they are copyright and some are unreleased. Where a student needs a paper, the right route is the school's chemistry department, who have it legitimately and usually have a view on which ones are worth sitting.

06

The chemistry investigation, criterion by criterion

A fifth of the chemistry grade is an individual investigation marked on four criteria over 24 marks, with a 3,000-word limit on the write-up. In chemistry the recurring failure is not poor data collection. It is a research question that the chosen method cannot answer, a design fault that no quality of execution repairs and that is visible to the tutor in five minutes and invisible to the student for six weeks.

The classic version is a question about a rate or an equilibrium position with a method that measures something only loosely related to either, often because the equipment available suggested the method and the question was fitted to it afterwards. The order matters: question first, then method, then a check that the method produces data capable of answering the question. Reversing that order is the single most common way a chemistry investigation lands in the middle band.

The other reliable losses sit in evaluation. Chemistry investigations invite specific limitations — heat loss, incomplete reaction, impure reagent, a concentration assumed rather than standardised — and a student who writes about human error in general has written a sentence that scores nothing. Naming the limitation, its direction and its effect on the numerical result is what the criterion asks for.

The honesty line is firm. A tutor may discuss whether a question is answerable by a method, explain what each criterion asks for, and give written feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor may not design the experiment, produce or clean the data, write any part of the text, or edit it to completion. The declaration on the submitted work is the student's. One page ranking in this market sells completed internal assessments outright, which puts the student at risk rather than the seller.

What chemistry tuition costs, specialist band first

Begin at the top of the market, because chemistry is one of the subjects where the specialist band is genuinely doing different work. An IB specialist in Dubai runs AED 200 to 450 or more an hour, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table giving 200 to 450 plus. The premium end reaches AED 500 to 650 and above, with BartyED publishing AED 650. All figures read in October 2026 and all belonging to whoever published them.

Below that, a qualified subject tutor online runs AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200 and IGCSE from AED 150. Budget online tutoring runs AED 45 to 150, EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. In-home one-to-one runs AED 180 to 500 including travel, with Bestimate at 180 to 350 and independent home tutors at 200 to 500.

What the specialist band buys in chemistry specifically is the ability to name the trap. Marking a mechanism for arrow origin, spotting that an investigation's research question cannot be answered by its method, knowing that a Higher Level question has quietly required extension content inside a core-looking stem — that is experience of the mark scheme rather than knowledge of chemistry. Plenty of people with chemistry degrees cannot do it, and the rate bands in this market broadly reflect that rather than reflecting prestige.

Monthly, Bestimate's estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Packages published in the market include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home visits. Ask any provider three things before booking: the session length behind the rate, whether VAT is included, and what happens if you stop after one lesson.

A subject made of drawings, taught on a shared screen

Chemistry is unusually well suited to video delivery, and the reason is not cost. It is that most of what a chemistry session produces is drawings: mechanisms, lattice structures, energy profiles, titration curves, orbital diagrams, structural formulae. A shared screen keeps the student's own attempt, the examiner's expected version and the correction visible together, and nothing has to be redrawn or turned around.

Marking works better too. The official scheme's wording sits beside the student's answer on one screen, both people reading the same line at the same time. That is how precision gets taught: not by being told that state symbols matter, but by watching a correct answer score two out of four in real time because they were missing. On paper, with one copy of the scheme between two people, that moment is diluted.

What video genuinely loses is presence. A tutor in the room notices drift faster and a parent can see the session happening, which matters more for a fifteen-year-old than for a seventeen-year-old. The market charges roughly AED 50 to 150 an hour extra for that, which across a two-year Diploma in one subject runs into several thousand dirhams. It is a real trade and worth making consciously.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that service exists only in India. The table below therefore sets out reasoning behind an existing decision rather than a sales case. The last column is the district part: traffic around Nad Al Sheba, Meydan and Mohammed Bin Rashid City at 15:00 decides what time a travelling tutor can actually begin a session that needs an alert student.

Laboratory time, the mandatory subjects and a compressed week

Chemistry needs laboratory time, and laboratory time competes with everything else in a Dubai Diploma timetable. That competition is sharper here than most international comparisons allow for, because KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and those lessons sit inside the same week as six Diploma subjects, Theory of Knowledge and CAS.

KHDA's published arrangements are specific. Instructional time for the mandatory subjects is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided the weekly total is met, and it is advised that any mandatory-subject lesson runs at least 25 minutes. Schools must organise separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes are strictly prohibited because of the different curriculum expectations and language of instruction.

For a chemistry student that arithmetic has a practical consequence. A student who misses laboratory sessions — through illness, travel, or a timetable clash with a mandatory lesson — loses something an outside tutor cannot replace, because the school runs the practical programme and nobody else does. The right response is to protect laboratory attendance ahead of almost everything else and to put the investigation's data collection early, before the term gets crowded.

Where tutoring does fit is around the laboratory rather than inside it: preparing the thinking before a practical so the time at the bench is productive, and working on the write-up afterwards against the criteria. That division is worth being explicit about with any provider. Anyone offering to supply practical results or produce data for an investigation is offering something that is not tutoring and that puts the student's declaration at risk.

The chemistry grade and what it is for

Chemistry is the Diploma subject where a single grade most often changes an outcome, because medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, chemical engineering and most life-science degrees specify it, frequently at Higher Level with a minimum grade attached. That is why families in Nad Al Sheba treat a disappointing chemistry report with more urgency than a disappointing report in a subject with no prerequisite riding on it, and the urgency is rational.

The right way to use that is precision rather than panic. Read the published prerequisite for the specific programme at the specific institution, because requirements differ between universities and are revised. A student who needs a 6 and is predicted a 5 has a defined gap and roughly a known number of marks to find; a student who needs a 7 for a single competitive programme has a different conversation, including about whether to apply more broadly.

There is a separate UAE step that is often confused with admissions. Ministry of Education equivalency converts a school-leaving qualification into something UAE authorities recognise and governs applications to universities inside the country. The British-track rules are published: five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than E or grade 3 with Arabic and Islamic education excluded, plus one Advanced Level subject at E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. For the American track, English requires IELTS 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or SAT 450 reading-writing, and mathematics requires SAT Math of at least 450.

No IB equivalency figure appears on this page, deliberately. The source that sets out those British and American requirements states no IB points threshold, so publishing one would be invention, and one ranking competitor already publishes the wrong subject count for the British track. Check moe.gov.ae or your emirate's attestation authority. IB Gram does not perform, submit or guarantee any part of equivalency, and tutoring is not a requirement for it — any suggestion otherwise is false urgency about a regulatory process.

Where we tutor

Nad Al Sheba and the central corridor

Students on this page come from across the corridor, and the practical difference between communities is the clock rather than the chemistry. These are the areas and what changes with each.

Nad Al Sheba

Repton School Dubai, Kings' School Nad Al Sheba and GEMS Modern Academy inside the district. Short school runs mean a 15:30 session is realistic, which suits mechanism drilling because it needs an alert student rather than a long one.

Sobha Hartland

Hartland International School and North London Collegiate School Dubai sit inside the community. Easiest scheduling in the corridor, which helps during the investigation window when two shorter sessions a week work better than one long one.

Meydan

Newer stock around the racecourse with many families in their first or second UAE year. Mid-course arrivals are common, so requests here often start with a theme audit against the school's scheme of work before any teaching.

Mohammed Bin Rashid City

District One villa plots with long internal roads and limited exits onto Al Khail. Pick-up traffic absorbs twenty minutes inside the community, which rules out an early slot for a travelling tutor and not for a video session.

Al Quoz and Al Quoz 4

Mixed residential and industrial with longer journeys to the Nad Al Sheba and Barsha schools. Weekday starts land after 17:00, so weekend sessions carry more of the organic mechanism work for students here.

Business Bay

Apartments, short commutes, and students mostly at Downtown and Al Jaddaf schools. Evening slots after 19:00 are normal and suit a focused 45 minutes on titration curves or half-equations.

Downtown Dubai

No school on site, so every family drives out and back. The gap between arriving home and dinner is narrow, and during DP2 that gap becomes the investigation schedule rather than a convenience.

Al Jaddaf and Culture Village

Swiss International Scientific School Dubai anchors this end with a bilingual IB continuum. Chemistry requests from here more often involve the exact wording of explanations, because precision in a second language is harder to assess from a school report.

DIFC

Few families, almost all apartments with long parental working days. Weekend sessions dominate, and live video is the only format that survives a 20:00 start on a school night.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Say the level, the theme and the lost marks

Name Higher or Standard Level, which of the six syllabus areas the school is currently on, and what prompted the search. A marked script is worth more than a report: it shows whether the losses are content, precision or timing, which are three different purchases rather than three degrees of the same one.

  2. 02

    A free diagnostic trial lesson

One live session spent marking the student's own written answers strictly against the official scheme rather than teaching a topic. It is designed to separate content gaps from precision losses, because chemistry produces more of the second than any other Diploma science. You get a written note naming which. No payment is involved.

  3. 03

    Run the precision block first

Where the diagnostic points at signs, state symbols, arrow origins or charge balance, the first purchase is three or four sessions drilling those habits. They apply to every paper the student will ever sit, which makes them better value than another pass through a theme, and the block ends rather than running on.

  4. 04

Weekly sessions following the school's themes

The tutor asks for the current area and the next assessment each week. For Higher Level students the extension content is taught inside each theme rather than saved up, because a single Paper 2 question can require core and extension material together and often does.

  5. 05

Test the investigation question before the data

The highest-value single intervention in chemistry is checking, before any measurement, that the chosen method can actually answer the research question. A design fault is visible to a specialist in five minutes and invisible to a student for six weeks, and no amount of careful data collection repairs it afterwards.

  6. 06

    Spend the current-syllabus papers deliberately

The specification has only a few sittings behind it, so the available papers are scarce. Sessions use them a timed section at a time, marked line by line, with every lost mark sorted into content, precision, slip or timing before the next fortnight's plan is set.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The trap named before the student meets it

Enthalpy signs, missing state symbols, trends described rather than explained, arrows from the wrong electron source, half-equations unbalanced for charge. These are nameable, drillable and worth marks on every paper, and the first month of support works through them.

Taught as Structure and Reactivity

The current syllabus is two themes with Higher Level extension examined inside them, not numbered topics plus options. A tutor still teaching the old structure covers the right chemistry in an order the papers were not written for, and leaves extension material looking like a later problem.

The data booklet read before the exam

Students waste revision memorising values the booklet supplies and then cannot find the table they need under time pressure. One session on what is given and what must be learned redirects a term of misplaced effort, particularly towards organic conditions and reagents.

Design faults caught before the data

The commonest chemistry investigation failure is a research question the chosen method cannot answer. That is visible in five minutes to someone who has marked investigations and invisible to a student for six weeks, so the check happens before any measurement.

Every AED figure with its source

The bands on this page are attributed to the provider or rate table that published them and dated to October 2026. Three of six researched competitors publish no price at all and two quote in US dollars, which is not a currency UAE families transact in.

No borrowed credentials, no invented dates

UAE schools sit the May session and no specific IB date appears here, because ibo.org blocks automated checking. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoHRE, the Ministry of Education or the IB, and claims none.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Nad Al Sheba: your questions answered

Are the chemistry lessons given in Nad Al Sheba or online?+

Online, one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE addresses; home visits are a service we run only in India. Chemistry suits the format unusually well because most of a session produces drawings — mechanisms, energy profiles, titration curves, structural formulae — and a shared screen keeps the student's attempt, the examiner's expected version and the correction visible together, rather than redrawn in one notebook and passed back and forth across a table.

Why does my child lose marks when their chemistry answers look right?+

Because chemistry schemes mark very specific wording, and the usual losses are precision rather than ignorance. An enthalpy value correct in magnitude and wrong in sign. An ionic equation without state symbols. A periodicity trend described instead of explained with nuclear charge and shielding. A mechanism whose product is right and whose arrows start in the wrong place. A half-equation balanced for atoms and not charge. Each costs one or two marks, every paper, and all of them are drillable habits rather than concepts.

What is actually in the chemistry data booklet?+

Reference data: the periodic table and relative atomic masses, physical constants, enthalpy and bond data, standard electrode potentials, acid and base constants, and the spectroscopic reference values for infrared, mass spectrometry and proton nuclear magnetic resonance. What it does not contain is anything requiring judgement — definitions, organic reagents and conditions, qualitative test results, naming conventions or reasoning. So organic chemistry is where memorisation effort belongs, and spending revision hours on values the booklet supplies is wasted time.

How is the IB chemistry grade divided between components?+

Paper 1 carries 36% and splits into a multiple-choice section and a data-based section. Paper 2 carries 44% in structured extended response. The scientific investigation carries 20% at both Standard and Higher Level. Standard Level courses run 150 teaching hours and Higher Level 240. Because a fifth of the grade is written coursework completed before the exams, it is the most controllable part of the course and the part most often treated as administration.

What goes wrong most often in a chemistry internal assessment?+

A research question the chosen method cannot answer. It usually happens because the available equipment suggested a method and the question was fitted to it afterwards, which is the reverse of the right order. That design fault is visible to an experienced marker in five minutes, invisible to the student for six weeks, and not repairable by careful data collection. The other reliable loss is evaluation written as generic human error rather than a named limitation with its direction and numerical effect.

How should my child learn organic chemistry pathways?+

As one labelled map rather than a list of reactions. Build a single diagram of functional groups with every arrow labelled with its reagent and its conditions, have the student redraw it from memory each session, then test by giving a starting compound and a target and asking for the route. Conditions and reagents carry marks alongside the product, and most students learn the pathway and not the conditions, which is why they score partially on questions they feel they knew.

Does the Higher Level extension content need separate revision?+

No, and treating it that way builds in a failure. The current syllabus examines Higher Level extension material inside the Structure and Reactivity themes alongside the core, so a single Paper 2 question can require both and often does. A Higher Level student cannot secure the core and add the extension later. Any revision plan or tutor that keeps them separate is working from the older options-based structure, which is a reasonable thing to check before hiring anybody.

There are not many past papers on this syllabus. How should we use them?+

Treat them as scarce. Sit one section under real timed conditions, mark it against the official scheme line by line, and sort every lost mark into content not known, precision lost, calculation slip or ran out of time before deciding what the next fortnight is for. Older papers are still useful where the content survived the restructuring, and their mark schemes still show how examiners reward precision, but questions on moved or removed content waste an evening.

Can online tutoring help with laboratory work?+

Not with the practical itself. The school runs the laboratory programme, the equipment and the supervised data collection, and no outside tutor replaces that. What a tutor can do is the thinking around it: deciding what the practical needs to produce before the student is at the bench, and working the write-up against the four criteria afterwards. Anyone offering to supply results or produce data is offering something that is not tutoring and that puts the student's declaration at risk.

What does paying for a specialist rather than a general tutor actually buy?+

In chemistry, the ability to name the trap. Marking a mechanism for arrow origin, spotting that an investigation's method cannot answer its question, recognising that a core-looking Paper 2 stem has quietly required Higher Level extension content — that is mark-scheme experience rather than chemistry knowledge, and plenty of chemistry graduates do not have it. Market bands run AED 200 to 450 or more for an IB specialist against AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor, read October 2026.

My child is strong at chemistry but slow. What can be done in eight weeks?+

Timing is one of the recoverable losses, so quite a lot. The drill is timed sections rather than whole papers, with a rule about when to leave a question and come back, and explicit practice at the end of Paper 2 where the heaviest questions sit and most students arrive with no minutes left. If the marked script shows the student writing paragraphs for two-mark questions, that habit alone is often worth a grade boundary and takes about three sessions to break.

How does the mandatory-subject timetable affect chemistry in Dubai?+

KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with instructional time calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit and schools advised that any mandatory-subject lesson runs at least 25 minutes. Those minutes sit inside a week already holding six Diploma subjects, Theory of Knowledge and CAS, which squeezes laboratory time. The practical response is to protect laboratory attendance and put investigation data collection early in the term.

Which spectroscopy questions are worth revising for?+

Structure-deduction questions that combine infrared, mass spectrometry and proton nuclear magnetic resonance. They are among the most learnable marks in the whole course, because the data booklet supplies the reference values and the examined skill is interpretation and combination rather than recall. Students avoid them because three techniques look like three topics. In practice it is one procedure applied in a fixed order, and two or three sessions of practice makes it reliable.

Does my child need chemistry at Higher Level for medicine?+

Most medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and chemical engineering programmes specify chemistry and many specify it at Higher Level with a minimum grade, but requirements differ between institutions and are revised, so read the published prerequisite for the specific programme rather than relying on a general rule. For universities inside the UAE there is a separate Ministry of Education equivalency step, and no verified IB points threshold exists to quote, so check moe.gov.ae directly rather than any tutoring site.

Will a tutor read my child's investigation draft?+

Yes, and give written feedback on it against the four criteria — whether the research question is answerable by the method, whether uncertainties are carried through, whether the conclusion compares numerically with an accepted value, and whether the evaluation names limitations with direction and effect. What a tutor will not do is design the experiment, produce or clean data, write any part of the text, or edit it to completion. That boundary is stated to the student at the start, because the declaration is theirs.

How quickly can a Higher Level chemistry tutor be arranged?+

Usually within a few days for a Higher or Standard Level chemistry match, since it is among the better-subscribed Diploma sciences. Narrower requests take longer: a tutor with investigation-marking experience in a specific area, or one covering chemistry and Higher Level maths together. Where the match is not available in a given term you get a date or a straight no rather than a generalist with the right label, because a generalist is discovered in session three and the term is gone by then.

Send a marked script, not a report card

Chemistry marks disappear in nameable places, so the fastest way to use an IB chemistry tutor in Nad Al Sheba is to show where yours are going. Send the level, the theme the school is on and the most recent marked piece of written work. The first lesson is a free diagnostic spent marking the student's own answers strictly against the official scheme, which separates content gaps from precision losses — and in chemistry the second is far more common. You get a written note naming which, and the AED bands above are on the page with their sources so the comparison is yours to make.
