IB MYP Tutor in Nad Al Hamar

Parents looking for an IB MYP tutor in Nad Al Hamar usually start from a report they cannot interpret: four criteria levels out of eight, a grade out of seven, and no indication of what to do next. This page translates all of it against the MYP calendar, from MYP 1 through the Personal Project to the first term of the Diploma. Teaching is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, never at a UAE address.

  • The MYP 5 year mapped, including eAssessment and the Personal Project
  • Standard against extended mathematics decided with the Diploma in view

IB & IGCSE in Nad Al Hamar

A report nobody explains, and five years that decide the Diploma

The Middle Years Programme runs across eight subject groups: language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical and health education, and design. Each subject is assessed against four criteria, each criterion carries a level from zero to eight, and the four are combined to a total out of thirty-two which converts to a grade from one to seven using published boundaries. That is the whole machinery, and almost no school explains it to parents in a form they can act on.

The reason it matters is that the four criteria measure different things, and a student can be strong on two and weak on two while receiving a middling overall grade that reveals nothing. A science student who knows the content thoroughly and cannot design an investigation will show a high level on knowing and understanding and a low one on inquiring and designing. The remedy for that student is not more science. It is three sessions on experimental design, and the report already said so to anyone who could read it.

The second thing the programme does, quietly, is set up the Diploma. Two MYP decisions carry forward with real force. The first is standard or extended mathematics in MYP 4 and 5, which largely determines whether Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is realistic two years later. The second is whether a student has ever genuinely produced long-form independent work, which the Personal Project in MYP 5 is designed to force and which predicts how the Extended Essay and the internal assessments will go.

The calendar inside MYP is gentler than the Diploma's but it is not empty. MYP 5 carries the Personal Project with school-set deadlines across the year, and in schools that run eAssessment it carries on-screen examinations and ePortfolios leading to the MYP Certificate. The years before that carry the gradual accumulation of the skills those tasks assess, which is why MYP support bought in MYP 3 or 4 is worth more per hour than the same money spent in a panic in MYP 5.

Nad Al Hamar is a residential district on the eastern side of Dubai, between the Ras Al Khor sanctuary and the Dubai-Al Ain Road. There is no school inside the district, and MYP children travel out to the IB continuum schools in Mirdif and the Festival City cluster, reaching home between about 3.50pm and 4.35pm. Teaching is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE, because home tutoring is a service we run in India only. For a younger student the practical consequence is that sessions should be shorter and earlier than a Diploma student's, which the online format makes easy to arrange.

At a glance

  • Each MYP subject is assessed on four criteria, each carrying a level from zero to eight
  • The four levels sum to thirty-two and convert to a grade from one to seven
  • A middling overall grade can hide two strong criteria and two weak ones
  • Standard or extended mathematics in MYP 4 largely decides whether AA Higher Level is viable
  • The Personal Project in MYP 5 predicts how the Extended Essay will go two years later
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three stages inside the Middle Years Programme generate requests from the eastern suburbs, and the useful work differs sharply between them.

MYP 1-3Ages 11-14 · MYP 1-3

Years 7 to 9

The years in which criteria-based habits are formed: justifying an answer, investigating a pattern rather than computing one, communicating with correct terminology, and applying a concept to an unfamiliar context. Support here is cheap, infrequent and compounds, because every later assessment in both MYP and the Diploma rewards the same habits.

Dubai private schools deliver the mandatory UAE subjects alongside the MYP, because KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies regardless of the licensed curriculum. Those sit in the timetable and families planning extra tutoring on top of eight MYP subject groups routinely forget to count them.

MYP 4-5Ages 14-16 · MYP 4-5

Years 10 and 11

Subject choices narrow, mathematics splits into standard and extended, and MYP 5 carries the Personal Project. Schools running eAssessment add on-screen examinations and ePortfolios leading to the MYP Certificate. This is the stretch where a vague report becomes consequential, because the Diploma subject and level choices are made at the end of it.

Eastern-suburb continuum schools set their Personal Project deadlines across MYP 5 rather than at the end, with a proposal, a process journal and a product or outcome falling at different points. Those dates, rather than any published IB date, are what a plan has to be built against.

Into DPAges 15-16 · The summer between

MYP 5 into DP1

The step is in volume of independent work and in the shift from criterion descriptors to mark schemes. A student used to being rewarded for process meets papers that reward precise answers and specific command terms. Six to eight weeks of bridging work, particularly in mathematics and the sciences, removes most of the first-term difficulty.

Families here often travel for a long summer, which makes bridging work awkward in person and straightforward over video across time zones. For a student moving from MYP standard mathematics into any Diploma mathematics course, this block is the single highest-value purchase in the sequence.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The eight MYP subject groups, with the criterion that most often causes the trouble in each.

Mathematics

Standard and extended in MYP 4-5

Four criteria, with investigating patterns the one that separates students. It asks for generalisation from specific cases, which is a different activity from calculating, and it is the criterion that predicts Diploma readiness more reliably than any overall grade.

Sciences

MYP 1-5, integrated or separate

Knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Inquiring and designing is where content-strong students lose levels, because designing a fair test is a skill nobody teaches them directly.

Language and literature

MYP 1-5

Analysing, organising, producing text, and using language. Organising is the common gap: students have ideas and present them without a structure that the reader can follow, which costs levels across every task in the subject.

Language acquisition

Phases rather than year groups

Listening, reading, speaking and writing, assessed by phase rather than by age, which confuses parents comparing children in the same year. Progress depends on exposure volume more than on explanation, which shapes what tutoring can usefully do.

Individuals and societies

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating, and thinking critically. Thinking critically is the criterion that rewards evaluating a source rather than summarising it, and it is the direct ancestor of Diploma essay marks in history and economics.

Design

MYP 1-5

Inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, and evaluating. Heavily process-driven: students who build something good and document the process thinly score far below what the product suggests.

Arts

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, developing skills, thinking creatively, and responding. The process journal carries more weight than students expect, and a strong performer who keeps no record of development loses levels on two criteria out of four.

Physical and health education

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, planning for performance, applying and performing, and reflecting and improving performance. Written and reflective components exist and are frequently neglected by students who assume the subject is entirely practical.

The Personal Project

MYP 5

Assessed against its own criteria, covering planning, applying skills and reflecting, each marked out of eight. The process journal and the reflection carry a large share, and the quality of the product matters less than students and parents assume.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three MYP arrangements that suit a younger student's week, all one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

Single-criterion work

A short block aimed at one criterion rather than one subject: investigating patterns in mathematics, inquiring and designing in sciences, organising in language and literature. Narrow, measurable against the next assessed task, and usually finished in four to six sessions.

  • Criterion chosen from the report rather than from the overall grade
  • Practised on the kinds of task the school actually sets
  • Measured against the next assessed task's level, not against a feeling
  • Ends when the level moves, not after a fixed number of hours

Personal Project process support

Spread thinly across MYP 5 rather than concentrated at the end: a session at the proposal stage, one on keeping the process journal usefully, one midway on applying skills, and one before the final reflection. The journal and the reflection carry more weight than the product.

  • Proposal tested for whether it can generate real development
  • Process journal habits set early, which cannot be reconstructed later
  • Questions on the student's own journal and draft, never writing for them
  • Timed against the school's own checkpoints, not a generic schedule

Summer bridge into DP1

Six to eight weeks before the Diploma begins, aimed at the shift from criterion descriptors to mark schemes. Mathematics and the sciences carry most of the gap, and the work is algebraic fluency, command-term precision and the volume of independent writing the Diploma assumes.

  • Algebraic manipulation and function notation for any maths route
  • Command terms introduced before the Diploma uses them
  • Independent writing at Diploma length and structure
  • Runs across time zones for families travelling for the summer

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Nad Al Hamar

01

Reading an MYP report so it tells you what to do

An MYP report gives four criterion levels per subject, each from zero to eight, and an overall grade from one to seven derived from their total out of thirty-two. Parents read the grade and stop, which is understandable and loses most of the information. The grade is a summary; the four levels are a diagnosis. Two students with the same grade can need entirely different interventions, and the report already distinguishes them.

The pattern to look for is unevenness. A science student at level seven on knowing and understanding and level three on inquiring and designing is not weak at science. They have never been taught to design a fair test, which is a specific, teachable, four-session problem. A language and literature student strong on analysing and weak on organising has ideas and no structure, which is also specific and also quick. A mathematics student strong on knowing and understanding and weak on investigating patterns is fluent and cannot generalise, and that one matters most because it predicts the Diploma.

Even levels across all four tell a different story. A student at level four on everything is not hiding a specific gap; they are performing consistently at a middling standard, and that responds to subject teaching rather than to criterion work. A student at level seven on everything needs extension rather than support, and the honest advice to their parents is often to spend the money elsewhere.

The second thing to look for is movement between reporting periods. A level that has fallen is more informative than a level that is low, because something changed. Usually it is the task type: a student who scored well on a structured task and poorly on an open investigation has met a criterion they cannot yet access. That is the conversation to have with the subject teacher, and it is a more productive one than asking generally how the child is doing.

02

The four criteria in each subject group, named

Each MYP subject group has its own four criteria, and they are not interchangeable between subjects. This is the single most useful page of information a parent of an MYP student can hold, because it converts a report into a vocabulary the school will recognise. Asking a teacher how to raise criterion B in sciences is a different and far more productive conversation than asking how to improve at science.

In mathematics the four are knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. In sciences they are knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. In language and literature they are analysing, organising, producing text, and using language. In individuals and societies they are knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating, and thinking critically.

In language acquisition the four map onto listening, reading, speaking and writing, assessed by phase rather than by year group, which is the usual source of confusion when parents compare two children of the same age in different phases. In design they are inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, and evaluating. In arts they are knowing and understanding, developing skills, thinking creatively, and responding. In physical and health education they are knowing and understanding, planning for performance, applying and performing, and reflecting and improving performance.

The practical pattern across all eight groups is that two of the four criteria in each subject reward process and documentation rather than performance. Students who are good at the subject and poor at recording what they did lose levels in every group, and it is the commonest systematic underperformance in the programme. It is also among the easiest things to fix, because it is a habit rather than an ability.

The MYP 5 year, and what eAssessment adds

MYP 5 is the year with structure, and families are often surprised by how much of it is deadline-driven. The Personal Project runs across the whole year with school-set checkpoints. Subject assessment continues against the criteria. And in schools that offer it, eAssessment adds on-screen examinations and ePortfolios that lead to the formal MYP Certificate. Not every IB school runs eAssessment, so the first question is whether yours does, because the year looks materially different either way.

Where eAssessment runs, the on-screen examinations reward something the Diploma papers do not: a strong emphasis on process, justification and the application of concepts to unfamiliar material, assessed in a digital format. A student can do well in these and still be underprepared for Diploma papers, which reward precise answers to specific command terms. That mismatch is worth knowing in advance, because a strong MYP 5 result can create false confidence going into DP1.

The autumn term of MYP 5 is the useful window for anything structural: criterion habits, the Personal Project proposal, and the standard-or-extended mathematics decision if it is still open. By the spring the Personal Project is due and the examinations are close, and the honest work is finishing what exists rather than starting anything. A parent reading this in the autumn has options that a parent reading it in April does not.

One practical note on the certificate. The MYP Certificate requires satisfactory completion of the programme's requirements including the Personal Project and, where it runs, eAssessment. It is not a prerequisite for Diploma entry at most schools, which means a family weighing effort between the Personal Project and preparation for the Diploma should ask their own school what the certificate is worth to them specifically rather than assume.

The Personal Project, stage by stage, and where help stops

The Personal Project is assessed against its own criteria covering planning, applying skills and reflecting, each carrying a level out of eight. The crucial fact, which students consistently refuse to believe, is that the product matters less than the documentation of how it came about. A student who builds something impressive and keeps a thin process journal will score below a student whose product is modest and whose planning, skill development and reflection are thoroughly evidenced.

That has a timing consequence. The process journal cannot be reconstructed at the end, and a journal written retrospectively in one weekend reads exactly like one written retrospectively in one weekend. The highest-value intervention in the whole project is a single session near the start about how to keep the journal usefully: what to record, how often, and what counts as evidence of a skill being developed rather than merely used.

The second highest-value intervention is at the proposal stage, testing whether the chosen project can actually generate development. A project that applies a skill the student already has produces nothing to document under applying skills. A project with no identifiable success criteria produces nothing to reflect against. Both are fixable in an hour at the start and effectively unfixable in April.

The boundary is tighter here than anywhere else in the Middle Years Programme, because the project is the student's own by design. A tutor may explain what each criterion rewards, discuss whether a proposal can generate real development, demonstrate what a well-kept journal looks like using an entirely different project, and read the student's own journal and report and ask questions. A tutor may not choose the project, make the product, write or rewrite the report, or construct the journal. The student is the person a malpractice finding falls on.

Standard or extended mathematics, and the Diploma consequence

  • Extended mathematics keeps Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level realistically open
  • Standard mathematics leads comfortably to Applications and Interpretation at either level
  • Standard into Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is possible and a hard first year
  • Investigating patterns is the criterion that predicts this, and it is visible from MYP 3
  • The summer bridge is the cheapest fix if the decision has already been made

This is the MYP decision with the longest reach and the least discussion. In MYP 4 and 5 mathematics splits into standard and extended, and the split is not merely about pace. Extended mathematics covers additional content and, more importantly, demands the algebraic fluency that the Diploma's Analysis and Approaches course assumes from the first week. A student who takes standard mathematics and then chooses Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level arrives with a gap that is visible in the first term and expensive to close then.

The honest mapping is roughly this. Extended mathematics keeps every Diploma route open, including Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level. Standard mathematics is a comfortable route into Applications and Interpretation at either level and into Analysis and Approaches at Standard Level with some bridging. Standard mathematics into Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is possible and is a genuinely hard first year, and families should go into it knowingly rather than discover it in October of DP1.

The criterion to watch is investigating patterns. A student who scores well on knowing and understanding and poorly on investigating patterns is fluent at procedures and weak at generalisation, which is precisely the skill the extended route and then Analysis and Approaches both demand. That pattern, visible in MYP 3, is a more reliable signal than any overall grade, and it is actionable: generalisation can be taught, and four to six sessions on it in MYP 3 or 4 changes what is available later.

For a family in Nad Al Hamar whose child is already in MYP 5 with standard mathematics and Diploma ambitions in a quantitative subject, the practical answer is the summer bridge. Six to eight weeks on algebraic manipulation, function notation and trigonometric identities before DP1 begins is the cheapest version of this problem, and it is far cheaper than a term of remediation in the autumn alongside five other new subjects.

06

MYP into the Diploma, subject by subject

The transition is not uniform across subjects, and knowing where the steps are tells a family where to spend. Mathematics has the largest step, because of the algebraic fluency question and because Diploma papers reward precise answers where MYP rewarded process. The sciences have a moderate step: MYP students arrive with better investigation instincts than IGCSE students, thanks to criteria B and C, and with less quantitative practice.

Language and literature has a smaller step than expected, because the analytical habits MYP builds transfer well, though the volume and the formality of Diploma writing increase sharply. Individuals and societies transitions well for the same reason: thinking critically in MYP is the direct ancestor of Diploma essay evaluation marks. Language acquisition depends entirely on phase reached, and a student in a lower phase choosing a Diploma language B course at Higher Level should check that mapping with the school rather than assume.

The step that catches almost everyone is the sheer volume of independent long-form work. MYP produces one Personal Project across a year; the Diploma produces an Extended Essay, a Theory of Knowledge essay and exhibition, and an internal assessment in every subject, most of them clustered in DP2. A student who found the Personal Project difficult to organise will find that cluster much harder, and that is the single most useful predictive signal a parent has.

Which suggests the best use of MYP 5 and the summer following it. Not content coverage, which the Diploma will teach anyway, but the two things it assumes: algebraic fluency and the ability to plan, draft and finish an extended piece of work without being chased. Both are teachable, both take weeks rather than terms, and both are cheaper now than in DP2.

Scheduling for a younger student in Nad Al Hamar

MYP students are between eleven and sixteen, which changes the scheduling arithmetic considerably compared with a Diploma candidate. They come home from the Mirdif and Festival City schools between about 3.50pm and 4.35pm, and the useful window is earlier and shorter than a sixteen-year-old's. A forty-five minute session at 5pm or 5.30pm achieves more than a sixty-minute session at 7pm, and attention rather than content is the binding constraint.

Frequency also works differently. For a younger MYP student, two short sessions a week beat one long one for almost everything, because the habits being built, justifying an answer, recording a process, structuring a piece of writing, are habits rather than knowledge. For MYP 4 and 5 students the pattern moves closer to the Diploma shape, with sixty minutes once a week and ninety when a piece of work needs reading and discussing.

The amount is also smaller than families expect. An MYP student who is coping does not need tutoring, and a tutor who says so is giving better value than one who proposes a programme. The genuinely useful purchases in this programme are narrow: four to six sessions on one criterion, a handful of sessions spread across the Personal Project year, and the summer bridge. Continuous weekly support across five years is rarely the right answer and is a large amount of money.

Ramadan shortens school days and brings door times forward by an hour or more, which for a younger student actually opens up a good early-afternoon slot. Families generally choose either that or a post-Iftar session for older MYP students, and both work over video in a way they would not with a tutor crossing the eastern suburbs at Iftar. Agree the pattern before the month rather than improvising in week two.

08

What MYP support costs, and when not to buy it

MYP tutoring sits at the lower end of the market because the content is less specialised than Diploma work, and families should take advantage of that rather than paying Diploma rates. Budget online platforms advertise from roughly AED 33 to 65 an hour, with Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65, and for criterion habit work with a younger student that band can be entirely adequate. A qualified subject tutor online is quoted at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200.

Where the higher band earns its place in MYP is narrow: the standard-or-extended mathematics decision, the Personal Project proposal and journal, and the summer bridge into Diploma mathematics. Those three benefit from somebody who knows what comes next, and somebody who does not will give advice that sounds reasonable and points the wrong way. For everything else in the programme, a competent generalist at a lower rate is the sensible purchase.

Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour arrangement run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end and AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle, and an online package of about AED 799 a month for eight sessions suits the twice-weekly short-session pattern that younger students need. In-home visits in Dubai are quoted at AED 180 to 500 an hour once travel is absorbed, which for MYP work is a large premium on a session that could be forty-five minutes on a screen.

The honest advice is to buy less than you were planning to. An MYP student who is coping needs nothing. One with an uneven criterion pattern needs four to six sessions on the weak criterion. One in MYP 5 needs a handful spread across the Personal Project year. One heading into Diploma mathematics from the standard route needs the summer bridge. That is a small total across five years, and a provider proposing continuous weekly support throughout the programme is selling a subscription rather than solving a problem.

Nad Al Hamar

Residential streets off Nad Al Hamar Road with no school inside the district. Quiet in the early evening, which suits a younger student's shorter session at 5pm better than a Diploma student's 6.30pm slot.

Mirdif

The nearest IB continuum provision, with MYP running from the primary years upward. Twenty minutes off-peak and thirty-five at pickup, so a 5.30pm start is realistic and a 5pm one often is not.

Dubai Festival City

Large international schools with IB provision and the slowest exit in the area at 3pm. Shorter journey than Mirdif and still a drive rather than a walk.

Al Warqa

Mostly British and Indian curriculum schools, so a family here comparing an MYP report with a neighbour's IGCSE predictions is comparing two different assessment philosophies.

Al Mizhar and Al Khawaneej

Outer villa communities with long internal roads and late arrivals. For a younger student this pushes sessions to 5.30pm or 6pm and argues for forty-five minutes rather than sixty.

Al Rashidiya

Immediately north, sharing bus routes with parts of Nad Al Hamar. The extra stop costs about ten minutes, which matters more for an eleven-year-old than for a sixteen-year-old.

Academic City

South along the Dubai-Al Ain Road with senior schools and university campuses. Relevant mainly as the destination the MYP choices are eventually pointing toward.

Al Qusais and Al Nahda

North-east along the metro corridor, thirty-five to forty minutes at pickup. A long run for a younger child and the reason some families here moved to video sessions early.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the report, not a description

The four criterion levels per subject tell a tutor in two minutes what a conversation takes twenty to approximate. Unevenness between the four is the diagnosis; the overall grade out of seven is only the summary.

  2. 02

Name the criterion, not the subject

Investigating patterns in mathematics, inquiring and designing in sciences, organising in language and literature. Asking the school how to raise a named criterion is also a far more productive conversation than asking how your child is doing.

  3. 03

Check whether your school runs eAssessment

Not every IB school does, and the MYP 5 year looks materially different either way. If it does, the on-screen examinations and ePortfolios need their own slot in the plan alongside the Personal Project.

  4. 04

Trial lesson, forty-five minutes, live online

Forty-five rather than sixty, because for a younger student attention is the binding constraint. No card details collected, and afterwards a written note naming the criterion and the habit the tutor would work on.

  5. 05

    Stop when the level moves

Criterion work is measurable against the next assessed task, which makes it one of the few tutoring purchases with a natural end point. We will tell you when the block has done its job rather than extending it.

The journal cannot be reconstructed at the end and a retrospective one reads like it. One session near the start on how to keep it is worth more than four at the deadline.

The maths decision made with the Diploma in view

Standard or extended in MYP 4 largely sets whether Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is realistic. Investigating patterns is the criterion that predicts it, and it is visible from MYP 3.

Advice to buy less

A coping MYP student needs nothing, an uneven one needs four to six sessions, and most of the programme does not need a weekly subscription. We say so, which is the smaller sale.

A strict line on the project

Criteria explained, feasibility discussed, a good journal demonstrated on a different project, and questions on your child's own work. Never choosing the project, making the product, writing the report or constructing the journal.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Nad Al Hamar: your questions answered

What does a criterion level of 5 out of 8 on an MYP report actually mean?+

It is a judgement against a published descriptor rather than a percentage, so it describes what the student can do rather than how many marks they scored. More useful than the number itself is the comparison between the four criteria in that subject. Each carries a level from zero to eight, the four sum to thirty-two, and that total converts to a grade from one to seven using published boundaries. A student at seven on one criterion and three on another has a specific, teachable gap.

Our MYP report has four different numbers per subject. Where do we start?+

With the gap between them. High on knowing and understanding and low on inquiring and designing means the content is secure and the process skill was never taught, which is four to six sessions of work. High on analysing and low on organising means ideas without structure, which is similar. Even levels across all four mean no specific gap and respond to ordinary subject teaching. High everywhere means your child needs extension, and the honest advice is to spend the money elsewhere.

Which MYP criterion predicts how the Diploma will go?+

Investigating patterns in mathematics, more reliably than any overall grade. It asks for generalisation from specific cases rather than calculation, and that is exactly what extended mathematics and then Analysis and Approaches demand. A student strong on knowing and understanding and weak on investigating patterns is fluent at procedures and weak at generalising, and that pattern is visible from MYP 3 and is teachable in four to six sessions, long before it becomes a Diploma problem.

Should our child take standard or extended mathematics in MYP 4?+

Extended, if any quantitative Diploma route is plausible. Extended keeps Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level realistically open; standard leads comfortably to Applications and Interpretation at either level and to Analysis and Approaches at Standard Level with bridging. Standard into Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is possible and makes for a genuinely hard first Diploma year. Make the decision knowingly rather than discovering the consequence in October of DP1, when it costs far more to address.

How much does the Personal Project product actually matter?+

Less than students and parents assume. The criteria cover planning, applying skills and reflecting, each marked out of eight, and the process journal plus the reflection carry a large share of that. A modest product with thoroughly evidenced planning, skill development and honest reflection outscores an impressive product with a thin journal. The practical consequence is that one session near the start on how to keep the journal is the highest-value hour in the whole project year.

Can the process journal be written up at the end of MYP 5?+

It can be attempted and it reads exactly as what it is. The criteria reward regular, dated evidence of development, and a journal produced retrospectively in one weekend cannot show development because it has no timeline. This is the single most common avoidable loss in the Personal Project. The fix costs nothing and has to happen early: agree what gets recorded, how often, and what counts as evidence that a skill was developed rather than merely used.

Does our Dubai school's MYP include eAssessment and does it matter?+

Not every IB school offers it, so ask. Where it runs, MYP 5 adds on-screen examinations and ePortfolios leading to the formal MYP Certificate, and the year looks materially different as a result. One thing worth knowing: the on-screen examinations reward process and the application of concepts to unfamiliar material, while Diploma papers reward precise answers to specific command terms. A strong eAssessment result can therefore create false confidence going into DP1.

Which MYP subject group causes the most trouble for Dubai students?+

Sciences and design, for the same reason. Both have two criteria out of four that reward documenting a process rather than performing a task, and students who are good at the subject and careless about recording lose levels systematically. In sciences it is inquiring and designing plus processing and evaluating; in design it is inquiring and analysing plus evaluating. That is the commonest systematic underperformance in the programme and among the easiest things to fix, because it is a habit.

Which schools near Nad Al Hamar run the Middle Years Programme?+

The IB continuum schools in the Mirdif and Al Mizhar belt, including Uptown International School, and schools in the Festival City cluster offering IB programmes, which is a fifteen to twenty-five minute drive. Other eastern-suburb schools run British or Indian curricula to IGCSE instead, so a family here can compare an MYP route against an IGCSE route at sixteen within a short radius. Schools are named as local context only, with no affiliation or endorsement implied.

How long should a tutoring session be for an eleven-year-old in MYP 1?+

Forty-five minutes, and twice a week rather than once if anything is being built. Attention rather than content is the binding constraint at that age, and the habits worth building, justifying an answer, recording a process, structuring a piece of writing, respond to frequency rather than to depth. Door times in Nad Al Hamar run from about 3.50pm to past 4.35pm, so a 5pm or 5.30pm start works better than a Diploma student's 6.30pm slot.

Does an MYP student who is coping need a tutor at all?+

No, and we will say so. The genuinely useful purchases in this programme are narrow: four to six sessions on a criterion that sits well below the others, three or four on documentation habits, a handful spread across the Personal Project year, and the summer bridge into Diploma mathematics if the standard route was taken. That is a small total across five years. A provider proposing continuous weekly support throughout the programme is selling a subscription.

What is the biggest step from MYP 5 into the first Diploma year?+

The volume of independent long-form work. MYP produces one Personal Project across a year; the Diploma produces an Extended Essay, a Theory of Knowledge essay and exhibition, and an internal assessment in every subject, with most of them clustered in DP2. A student who struggled to organise the Personal Project will find that cluster considerably harder, which makes it the most useful predictive signal a parent has. Planning, drafting and finishing habits are the thing to build in the summer.

Will you help our child with the Personal Project report itself?+

We will explain what each criterion rewards, discuss whether a proposal can generate real development, demonstrate what a well-kept journal looks like using an entirely different project, and read your child's own journal and draft report and ask questions about evidence, success criteria and honesty of reflection. We will not choose the project, make any part of the product, write or rewrite the report, or construct the journal. The project is the student's own by design, and a malpractice finding falls on them.

Do MYP students in Dubai also have to take Arabic and Islamic Education?+

In Dubai private schools, yes. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, with combined classes strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ. Instructional time is calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit. That is timetabled time families rarely count when adding tutoring on top of eight subject groups.

Read the four numbers, fix one, then leave it alone

The Middle Years Programme gives parents better diagnostic information than any other curriculum and almost nobody uses it. Look at the four criterion levels in each subject rather than the grade, find the one that sits well below the others, and buy four to six sessions on it. In MYP 5, spend a handful of hours early on the Personal Project proposal and journal rather than many at the deadline. And decide the standard or extended mathematics question with the Diploma in view. Teaching is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; home tutoring is an India-only service.
