IGCSE Maths Tutor in Nad Al Hamar

Comparing an IGCSE maths tutor in Nad Al Hamar with the options in Mirdif or Al Warqa produces three different shortlists and one shared gap: none of them is sorted by specification. This page compares what genuinely differs, Edexcel Specification A against Specification B, group classes against one-to-one hours, and the formats a parent can buy, with every rate attributed. Teaching is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Nad Al Hamar

Three shortlists, one missing question

A parent in Nad Al Hamar, a parent in Mirdif and a parent in Al Warqa run the same search and get three different shortlists. The Mirdif list is longest, because Mirdif has the most schools and the most tuition centres within a short drive. The Al Warqa list leans toward tutors who serve the large British and Indian curriculum schools there. The Nad Al Hamar list is the shortest of the three, because the district has no secondary school inside it and few resident subject specialists. None of the three lists is sorted by the question that decides whether a maths tutor can help, which is which specification your child is entered for.

That question has three answers in Dubai, not two. Cambridge International Mathematics is syllabus 0580, with a Core and an Extended tier. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics Specification A is 4MA1, with Foundation and Higher tiers, and it is the route most British-curriculum schools use. Specification B, 4MB1, is a different and more demanding assessment that some schools enter stronger cohorts for, and a tutor who has only taught Specification A will be working from the wrong paper structure for a Specification B candidate.

The second missing question is what format the help should take. A one-to-one hour, a tuition centre group class, a subscription app and the school's own free provision are four different products at four very different prices, and each solves a different problem. Families tend to compare providers within one format rather than comparing formats, which is where the money goes wrong. A student whose problem is practice volume does not need the most expensive format; a student stuck on graph transformations does.

The third is what the marks are actually distributed across. Revision time gets spread evenly across the syllabus when it should be weighted toward the topics that carry the most marks and the ones a student is leaving blank. Number, algebra and geometry carry the bulk of any IGCSE maths paper, and the higher-tier-only topics such as circle theorems, vector proofs and graph transformations are routinely abandoned rather than attempted, which makes them the cheapest marks available.

On delivery: IB Gram teaches one-to-one over live video, on Gulf Standard Time, at a fixed weekly hour set around the eastern-suburb school run. We do not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE; home tutoring is a service we run in India only. The Dubai in-home market is real and priced in this page with the source of every figure, so the alternative can be weighed with numbers. What the online format buys a Nad Al Hamar family is the ability to pick on specification rather than on distance.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The three stages at which eastern-suburb families ask for maths help, and what each stage can still change.

Year 9Ages 13-14 · Year 9

The year before the entry

Algebraic fluency is built here, and it is what determines whether the higher tier is a realistic entry. Rearrangement, indices, negative numbers and fraction work done securely in Year 9 keep every option open; done loosely, they produce a Year 10 student who will be recommended for the capped tier on perfectly reasonable evidence.

Nad Al Hamar families have a specific advantage here, which is that the work needed is narrow. Two short sessions a month aimed only at manipulation is cheap and changes what is possible two years later, and it is the one intervention in this market that is reliably better value than its price.

Year 10Ages 14-15 · Year 10

Tier evidence year

Content is introduced and the school gathers the evidence on which it will enter your child for a tier. The higher-tier-only topics appear in this year: functions and graph transformations, circle theorems, vector geometry and the sine and cosine rules. These take months to build, which is why a tier conversation in Year 11 is usually too late to act on.

Schools across Mirdif, Al Warqa and the Festival City cluster run Year 10 assessments at different points, so a family comparing their child's progress against a cousin's at another eastern-suburb school is often comparing two different assessment calendars rather than two levels of attainment.

Year 11Ages 15-16 · Year 11

Entry and examination year

Entries are submitted with the tier attached, mocks are sat, and the papers arrive in the June or November series. The content has been covered once by spring, so the marginal value of teaching falls and the marginal value of timed practice rises. Revision should be weighted by topic marks and by what the student is leaving blank.

For UAE equivalency the Ministry of Education requires five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from the count. That is a much lower bar than any sixth form applies for A Level Mathematics, and the two are frequently confused.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

IGCSE mathematics splits into topic blocks that carry very different shares of the paper. These are the ones worth naming when you talk to a tutor.

Number

Core and Extended, Foundation and Higher

Fractions, percentages, reverse percentages, standard form, bounds, ratio and compound interest. The highest-volume block on a lower-tier paper and the place where accuracy rather than understanding decides the grade. Reverse percentages in particular are reliably answered the wrong way round.

Algebra and manipulation

All tiers

Expanding, factorising, rearranging, indices, surds, simultaneous and quadratic equations. The block that determines performance in every other block, because multi-step questions pass through an algebraic step whatever they appear to be about.

Functions and graph transformations

Higher and Extended only

Domain and range, composite and inverse functions, and the translation, reflection and stretch of graphs. Absent from the lower tier entirely, which is why a candidate moved up late has a specific and sizeable gap here rather than a general one.

Geometry and circle theorems

Circle theorems on the higher tier

Angle properties, similarity, congruence, and the circle theorems. A bounded learnable set that appears reliably and is left blank by borderline candidates, which makes a fortnight of focused work worth a grade boundary on its own.

Trigonometry

Sine and cosine rules on the higher tier

Right-angled trigonometry on both tiers, then the sine and cosine rules, area of a triangle, bearings and three-dimensional problems above. The failure point is consistently the move away from right-angled triangles rather than the trigonometry itself.

Vectors

Higher and Extended

Column vectors, magnitude and vector geometry proofs. The proof questions carry full marks and are abandoned by most candidates, making them, with circle theorems, the cheapest recoverable marks on the paper.

Statistics and data

All tiers

Averages from grouped data, cumulative frequency, box plots and histograms with unequal class widths. Frequency density is a concept rather than a formula and is the reliable mark-shedder in this block across both boards.

Probability

All tiers

Tree diagrams, conditional probability and set notation. Marks are usually lost to reading rather than to probability: the words without replacement are missed and a different question is answered correctly.

Calculator operation

All tiers, both calculator papers

Fraction entry, stored answers, statistical modes, degree settings and table functions. A skill rather than a topic, and the difference between finishing a paper and leaving a page blank. Worth ten minutes of every session until it stops limiting the student.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three maths-specific arrangements eastern-suburb families use, all one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

Blank-topic recovery block

Four to six weeks aimed only at the higher-tier topics the student is leaving blank: circle theorems, vector proofs, graph transformations, the sine and cosine rules. Bounded, measurable and the best-value block in Year 11, because these are full marks currently scoring nothing.

  • Starts from the marked mock, counting blank questions by topic
  • One topic per fortnight, taken to a timed test before moving on
  • Ends when the blanks are being attempted, not after a set number of hours
  • Works for both boards and both higher tiers

Accuracy and pacing drilling

Short frequent sessions for a student whose methods are right and whose answers are not, or who runs out of time. Rounding discipline, unit checks, a thirty-second end-of-question routine, and timed sections rather than whole papers. Accuracy is a habit, so frequency beats depth.

  • Forty-five minutes twice a week rather than one long session
  • Timed sections of ten minutes with an error count recorded each time
  • Calculator fluency on the student's own model, ten minutes per session
  • Progress measured by error count, not by topics covered

Specification-switch catch-up

For a student moving school or moved up a tier mid-course, where the gap is structural rather than general. The work is the topics the previous route did not examine and the question style of the new one, which is a different exercise from ordinary revision.

  • Gap audit against the new specification rather than the old scheme
  • Question style practised on papers from the correct code only
  • Higher-tier-only topics prioritised, since they were never taught
  • Finishes when the student can sit a full paper in the new format

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Nad Al Hamar

01

Nad Al Hamar, Mirdif and Al Warqa compared for maths specifically

The three areas sit within fifteen minutes of each other and differ in ways that matter to a maths decision. Mirdif has the highest density of schools and tuition centres, which means real group-class options and the longest local shortlist. Al Warqa has the heaviest higher-tier maths demand because of its large British and Indian curriculum schools, so a tutor working that area is more likely to have taught the higher tier in the current cycle. Nad Al Hamar has neither: no school inside the district, few resident specialists, and a shortlist made mostly of generalists and centres elsewhere.

What that means in practice is that the three areas offer different versions of the wrong product. A long Mirdif list of centres offers scheme-paced group teaching. A Nad Al Hamar list offers travelling generalists. Neither is sorted by specification, and for a student stuck on graph transformations in Specification B the specification is the only attribute that matters. The local advantage Al Warqa has is real but accidental, and it is not an advantage a Nad Al Hamar family can acquire by looking harder.

The logistics do differ and they should shape the slot rather than the choice of tutor. From Nad Al Hamar, Festival City is twelve to fifteen minutes off-peak and twenty to twenty-five at pickup, and Mirdif is eighteen to twenty against thirty to thirty-five. Door times across the three areas land between about 3.40pm and 4.35pm, pushed past 5pm on activity days. In all three the slot that survives a full Year 11 term sits between 6pm and 7.30pm.

So the comparison resolves the same way for all three: choose on specification and tier, set the hour after the real door time, and buy a bounded block rather than an open-ended arrangement. In Mirdif that is a preference exercised among several options. In Nad Al Hamar it is the only route to a specialist at all.

Specification A against Specification B, and Cambridge alongside both

Pearson Edexcel runs two International GCSE mathematics specifications and Dubai schools use both. Specification A, code 4MA1, is the mainstream route with Foundation and Higher tiers. Specification B, code 4MB1, is a different assessment used for stronger cohorts, with a more demanding question style and content that reaches further toward early A Level material. They are not tiers of one another and the past papers are not interchangeable.

This matters because a tutor who has taught Specification A for years will know the content a Specification B candidate needs but not the shape of the questions they will face, and in the final eight weeks the shape is what is being practised. A Specification B student working through Specification A papers will find them easy, conclude they are ready, and then meet a paper that asks for more sustained reasoning. That is a real and avoidable failure, and it starts with nobody establishing the code.

Cambridge International Mathematics, syllabus 0580, sits alongside both with Core and Extended tiers. Its Extended papers tend toward longer multi-part structured questions where later parts depend on earlier ones, so an early slip is expensive. Edexcel Higher papers tend toward a greater number of shorter items, which rewards pace and punishes dwelling. Those are different examination habits to train, and a tutor who has taught both will say which one your child is losing marks to.

The administrative facts to hold alongside this: Cambridge candidates in the UAE sit the June series and the November series, and the February and March series is offered to India only. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May and June and again in November. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones with different timetables, and states that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong zone's version.

Where the marks sit, and where revision time usually goes instead

Students revise what they are comfortable with, which means time flows toward number and basic algebra and away from the topics that are both heavily marked and poorly attempted. Across both boards, number and algebra together carry the largest share of any paper, geometry and trigonometry carry a substantial block, and statistics and probability carry a smaller but reliable one. On the higher tier, functions, transformations, circle theorems and vectors appear every series and are precisely the material a borderline candidate has abandoned.

The right weighting is therefore not even. It is proportional to marks available multiplied by marks currently missed. A student scoring well on number and leaving every circle theorem question blank should spend almost no revision time on number. This sounds obvious and is almost never how revision is organised, because the student chooses what to do and chooses the comfortable thing.

The practical method is to take the marked mock, go through it question by question, and record for each lost mark both the topic and the reason. Then total the marks lost by topic. The top two topics by marks lost are the revision plan for the next month, and if one of them consists mainly of blank answers it comes first, because an abandoned topic is full marks currently scoring nothing rather than partial marks being squeezed.

One caution. A topic a student has never been taught, because they were entered for the lower tier and have been moved up, is a different case and needs teaching rather than revision. Mixing the two produces a plan that treats a content gap as a practice gap, and three weeks of past papers on a topic that was never covered is three weeks lost.

One-to-one, group class or an app: what each format solves

Families compare providers inside a format and rarely compare formats, which is where the money is actually decided. There are four products on the table in eastern Dubai. The school's own provision, usually included in fees. A subscription practice app, cheap and unlimited. A tuition centre group class, cheapest per head of the taught options. And one-to-one hours, the most expensive per hour and the only one that can stop on a single topic.

The school's provision should be tried first and frequently is not. Subject clinics and teacher support are free, aligned exactly with the assessment your child will sit, and staffed by people who know the internal calendar. A parent who has not asked what is available may be buying something already included. An app is excellent for practice volume and useless for explanation: it will tell a student they got a question wrong and will not work out why they keep getting that kind of question wrong.

A group class supplies structure, pace, a fixed weekly commitment and peer pressure, which is precisely the remedy for a student who is not doing enough work. It cannot spend forty minutes on circle theorems for one student while nine others wait. One-to-one hours are the reverse: expensive, and the only format that can take a single named topic and stay on it until it holds. The honest rule is to buy the cheapest format that can solve the problem you have actually identified.

Which brings the matter back to identification. A parent who can name the topic should buy one-to-one time on it, in a bounded block. A parent who can only name the grade should buy a diagnostic first, then decide. Buying three subjects of one-to-one hours on the strength of a disappointing mock report is the single commonest expensive mistake in this market, and it happens in Mirdif and Nad Al Hamar equally.

Both papers are calculator papers, and that changes the preparation

  • Both papers permit a calculator, so machine fluency becomes the limiting factor
  • Store and recall answers rather than retyping rounded values
  • Degree mode left in radians ruins every trigonometric answer silently
  • Round once, at the end, to three significant figures unless told otherwise
  • Ten minutes a session until it stops limiting the student, then stop

Unlike IB Analysis and Approaches, IGCSE mathematics on these routes permits a calculator throughout. That sounds like a simplification and is actually a trap, because it moves the failure point from algebraic fluency to machine fluency and nobody teaches the second. A student who knows the method and spends ninety seconds per question finding the right menu will not finish the paper, and an unfinished paper costs more marks than any topic gap.

The specific skills are short and teachable. Fraction entry, so that a student is not converting to decimals and rounding early. Storing an answer and recalling it, which is the single commonest source of accumulated rounding error and costs accuracy marks across a whole paper. Statistical modes for one and two-variable data. Degree mode, which silently ruins trigonometric answers if left in radians. Table functions for graph sketching. Standard-form entry and display.

Teaching this on video works better than teaching it beside a student, which is the opposite of what parents expect. The tutor shares an emulator or the matching software on screen, so the menu path is projected at a readable size and can be repeated, while the student follows on the handheld model they will take into the examination hall. In a kitchen-table session the student watches a small screen at an angle and copies approximately.

The discipline we apply is ten minutes of every session on calculator work until it stops limiting the student, and then it stops. Alongside that sits the rounding rule: work to full precision throughout and round only at the end, to three significant figures unless the question specifies otherwise. Those two habits together recover more marks for a middling candidate than another month of content.

06

What a parent can actually verify before paying

Most of what a tutoring provider says about itself cannot be checked, so it is worth knowing which claims can be. The specification a tutor has taught is checkable by asking them to describe the paper structure of it, which takes thirty seconds and cannot be bluffed. The tier is checkable the same way, by asking which higher-tier-only topics they have taught most recently. A permit is checkable because it is a document. A rate is checkable because it is a number.

What is not checkable, and should therefore be discounted entirely, is any statistic offered without a sample size, a date and a method. Competitor pages in this market publish star ratings of 4.92 from 480 reviews and 4.93 from 850 reviews on the same page, and one shows five out of five from twenty reviews next to a claim about student numbers the review count cannot support. Self-asserted review markup is a structured-data violation and, as a commercial representation in the UAE, a consumer-protection exposure. We publish no rating at all.

On permits specifically: the private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued by MoHRE, free of charge, for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, school students aged fifteen to eighteen, and university students. The official route is MoHRE's service page titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, with a two working-day completion time. Operating without it attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published.

IB Gram claims no approval, accreditation or licence from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, Cambridge International or Pearson, because it holds none. It operates no office or centre in the UAE. It does not present any named school as a partner or client. Those four absences are the most checkable statements on this page, and in this market they are also the rarest.

Price per contact hour across the formats, with sources

Set the formats side by side on price and the decision gets easier. Budget online platforms advertise from roughly AED 33 to 65 an hour, with Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65. A qualified subject tutor online is quoted at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150. IGCSE specialists sit at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270 and Bestimate's table at AED 200 to 450 plus. Premium named tutors reach AED 500 to 650 and more, with BartyED at AED 650.

In-home visits are quoted at AED 180 to 500 an hour once travel is absorbed, with Bestimate at AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors asking AED 200 to 500. Packages seen in this market include about AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home visits. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour arrangement run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for an examination-year specialist.

Read those figures per contact hour rather than per month and the pattern is clear: the online package delivers substantially more contact time per dirham than the in-home package, because the in-home figure carries travel. A group class delivers the most contact time of all and the least individual attention. The point is not that one is better but that a parent should know which currency they are buying in, hours or attention, before choosing.

Every figure above was published by the provider named and read in October 2026. Three of the six ranking pages researched in this market publish no price at all, and two of the three that do quote in US dollars. IB Gram does not post a fixed hourly rate on these pages, because it depends on specification, tier and proximity to a series. The trial is forty-five minutes, costs nothing, takes no card details, and is where a real number is given.

Additional Mathematics, and the step after the main entry

Some schools in eastern Dubai enter stronger candidates for an additional or further mathematics qualification alongside the main entry. It is worth being clear about what that is for. It is an extension rather than an insurance policy: it covers material that overlaps with early A Level or Diploma mathematics, and its value is in the transition rather than in the certificate. A student who takes it and does well arrives in Year 12 having already met calculus and more demanding algebra.

The sequencing rule is firm. Additional mathematics should only be tutored once the main entry is secure, because the main grade is the one that sixth forms and the Ministry of Education count. A student spending tutoring hours on the extension while sitting on a borderline main grade has inverted their priorities, and a tutor who encourages that is not reading the situation.

Where it earns its place is for a student heading for A Level Mathematics or IB Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level. Those courses demand sustained algebraic fluency and a willingness to justify rather than execute, and the additional qualification is the only point before sixth form where that is formally assessed. For such a student, six to eight weeks of bridging work in the summer after Year 11 is the natural continuation and the highest-value block available.

For everyone else, the honest answer is that the extension is optional and the main grade is not. A parent choosing between tutoring hours on the extension and hours on circle theorems for the main paper should choose circle theorems every time, because those are marks on the certificate that counts.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Nad Al Hamar

The three areas this page compares, plus the rest of the eastern belt, with what each offers a maths-tutoring decision.

Nad Al Hamar

Residential streets between the Ras Al Khor sanctuary and the Dubai-Al Ain Road, with no secondary school inside the district. The shortest local maths shortlist of the three areas compared here and the strongest case for choosing on specification instead.

Mirdif

The densest school and tuition centre cluster in eastern Dubai, so a parent here has real group-class options at a short drive. The trade is that a class covers the scheme rather than the one topic your child cannot do.

Al Warqa

Large British and Indian curriculum schools and the heaviest higher-tier maths demand of the three. A tutor serving this area is more likely to have taught the higher tier recently, which is a genuine local advantage.

Al Mizhar

American-curriculum provision alongside British schools, so some families here are weighing an IGCSE maths route against a high-school diploma pathway for the same child.

Al Khawaneej

Outer villa streets with long internal roads and late, predictable arrivals. The thinnest local supply in the eastern belt, and the area where the online format was adopted earliest.

Dubai Festival City

Two large international schools and the slowest exit in the area at pickup. Entry specifications vary between them, which is why the specification question has to be asked per school and sometimes per subject.

Al Rashidiya

North of Nad Al Hamar, shaped by the airport approach and sharing some bus routes. The extra stop costs about ten minutes off the usable part of the afternoon.

Academic City and Dubai Silicon Oasis

South along the Dubai-Al Ain Road, with senior schools and private examination centres. Worth knowing for a retake candidate whose school declines to enter resits.

  2. 02

Count the blanks on the marked mock

Go through the script and record, per topic, the marks lost to blank answers as against the marks lost to errors. Abandoned topics are full marks currently scoring nothing, which makes them the first target rather than the last.

  3. 03

Pick the cheapest format that fits the problem

School clinic for alignment, an app for practice volume, a group class for structure and pace, one-to-one for a named topic. We will say when a cheaper format would do, including when the answer is to use provision you already pay for.

  4. 04

Trial lesson, forty-five minutes, live online

Real work on the identified topic, in the correct specification, with no card details collected. Afterwards you get a written note naming the two topics to attack first and the habit costing the most marks.

  5. 05

Measure by error count and blanks

Not by topics covered. If the number of blank questions and the accuracy error count are not falling after four weeks, the plan changes. Those two numbers are visible to a parent without any specialist knowledge.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Specification before anything else

Three routes run in Dubai schools and their papers differ in shape. A Specification B candidate practising Specification A papers will feel ready and will not be. We establish the code and tier before proposing a tutor.

Revision weighted by marks missed

Time should flow to the topics carrying the most marks that the student is currently abandoning, which is usually circle theorems, vectors and graph transformations. Students naturally revise what they are comfortable with instead.

Formats compared, not just providers

School clinic, app, group class and one-to-one solve different problems at very different prices. We will tell you when the cheapest option is enough, which no agency volunteers and which is often true.

Rates per contact hour, with sources

Every AED figure here was published by the provider named and read in October 2026, converted to contact hours per thousand dirhams so the comparison is real rather than rhetorical.

Only checkable claims made

No star ratings, no student-number claims, no regulator approval, no UAE office, no named school presented as a partner. What we do claim, a tutor's specification experience and a rate in dirhams, can be tested in a conversation.

Online, with a reason

Calculator technique teaches better on a shared screen than beside a student, the slot holds at 6.30pm regardless of traffic, and the tutor pool is wide enough to contain a Specification B specialist. Home visits are an India-only service for us.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Nad Al Hamar: your questions answered

What is the difference between Edexcel Specification A and Specification B in maths?+

Specification A, code 4MA1, is the mainstream International GCSE route with Foundation and Higher tiers. Specification B, code 4MB1, is a separate and more demanding assessment that some Dubai schools enter stronger cohorts for, with a question style that asks for more sustained reasoning and content reaching further toward early A Level material. They are not tiers of one another and their past papers are not interchangeable. A Specification B candidate practising Specification A papers will find them easy and conclude wrongly that they are ready.

Is it harder to find a maths tutor in Nad Al Hamar than in Mirdif?+

Harder to find a long local list, yes. Mirdif has the densest concentration of schools and tuition centres in eastern Dubai, while Nad Al Hamar has no secondary school inside the district and few resident specialists. But neither list is sorted by specification, and for a student stuck on graph transformations in Specification B the specification is the only attribute that matters. The Mirdif advantage is a longer list of scheme-paced options rather than a better chance of the right specialist.

Which maths topics should we revise first with eight weeks to go?+

The ones carrying the most marks that your child is currently leaving blank, which for a borderline higher-tier candidate is usually circle theorems, vector proofs and graph transformations. An abandoned topic is full marks scoring nothing, so recovering it is cheaper than squeezing partial marks out of a topic already being attempted. Take the marked mock, total the marks lost per topic, separate blanks from errors, and let that table rather than the student's comfort set the order.

Would a maths app be enough instead of paying for a tutor?+

For practice volume, often yes, and it is the cheapest option available. An app will set unlimited questions and mark them instantly, which is exactly what a student who is not doing enough work needs. What it cannot do is work out why the same kind of question keeps going wrong, which is the thing a tutor is for. The useful combination is an app for volume plus a small number of one-to-one hours on the two topics the app shows are consistently failing.

Why does calculator technique matter if both papers allow one?+

Because permission shifts the failure point from algebra to machine fluency, and nobody teaches the second. A student who knows the method and spends ninety seconds per question hunting a menu will not finish, and an unfinished paper costs more than any single topic gap. The specific skills are short: fraction entry, storing and recalling answers rather than retyping rounded values, statistical modes, degree mode, standard form and table functions. Ten minutes a session fixes it, then it stops.

Our child was moved up a tier mid-course. What exactly is the gap?+

Structural rather than general, which matters because it needs teaching rather than revision. The higher tier examines topics the lower tier does not: functions and graph transformations, circle theorems, vector geometry proofs, and the sine and cosine rules in harder settings. Your child has not underperformed on those; they have never been taught them. Three weeks of past papers on untaught content is three weeks wasted, so audit the gap against the new specification first and teach the missing blocks before practising.

How do I test whether a maths tutor really knows our specification?+

Ask them to describe the paper structure of the exact code: how many papers, their length, whether a calculator is permitted, and which topics appear only on the higher tier. That takes thirty seconds and cannot be bluffed. Then ask which higher-tier-only topics they have taught most recently and to which cohort. A specialist answers both immediately and often volunteers what they would not claim; a generalist redirects the conversation to experience in general.

Is Additional Mathematics worth tutoring alongside the main entry?+

Only once the main grade is secure, because the main grade is the one sixth forms and the Ministry of Education count. The additional qualification is an extension covering material that overlaps with early A Level or Diploma mathematics, and its value lies in the transition rather than in the certificate. For a student heading to A Level Mathematics or IB Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level it is genuinely useful. For a borderline candidate on the main paper it is a misallocation of hours.

How many contact hours does AED 1,000 actually buy in Dubai?+

It depends entirely on format. At budget online rates of AED 33 to 65 an hour, roughly fifteen to thirty hours. At a qualified online tutor's AED 150 to 300, roughly three to seven. At specialist rates of AED 200 to 450 and above, two to five. An in-home visit at AED 180 to 500 buys the same two to five while part of the money pays for travel. Those are market figures published by the providers named and read in October 2026.

Do Dubai schools near us use Cambridge or Edexcel for maths?+

Both, and the choice is the school's rather than the family's. Schools across the Mirdif, Al Mizhar and Al Khawaneej belt and the Al Warqa and Festival City cluster between them use Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel entries, and a school may use different boards for different subjects. Check the statement of entry for the code per subject rather than assuming a school-wide answer. Schools are named on this page as local context only, with no affiliation implied.

Should we trust a tutoring site that advertises a 4.9 star rating?+

Ask for the sample size, the date and the method, and discount the figure entirely without all three. Pages in this market publish ratings of 4.92 from 480 reviews and 4.93 from 850 reviews on the same page, and one shows five out of five from twenty reviews beside a student-number claim the review count cannot support. Self-asserted review markup breaches Google's structured-data policy and, as a commercial representation in the UAE, carries consumer-protection exposure. We publish no rating at all.

Can our daughter sit a maths resit in February if June goes badly?+

Not in the UAE. Cambridge International runs its IGCSE and O Level examinations in a June series and a November series, and the February and March series is offered to India only. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May and June and again in November. So the resit route from a June result is the November series, with results reaching students in January. Confirm the entry route with the school early, because some schools will not enter retake candidates and a private examination centre is then needed.

What is the smallest useful amount of maths tutoring we could buy?+

A single diagnostic session plus a four-week bounded block on one topic, which for a borderline higher-tier candidate is usually circle theorems or vector proofs. That is roughly five hours in total and it targets marks that are currently scoring zero rather than marks being partly earned. Beyond that, a second block on accuracy habits at forty-five minutes twice a week for a month. Both are measurable by error count and blank count, which a parent can track without any specialist knowledge.

Does our school's free maths support count for anything?+

More than most families assume, and it should be tried first. Subject clinics and teacher support are usually included in fees, are aligned exactly with the specification your child will sit, and are run by staff who know the internal calendar and the mock dates. A parent paying for tutoring without having asked what the school provides may be buying something already included. Use paid hours for what the school cannot supply, which is sustained one-to-one attention on a single named topic.

Specification, blanks, format: the three questions that matter

The shortlists differ between Nad Al Hamar, Mirdif and Al Warqa and the right decision does not. Find out which of the three maths routes your child sits, Cambridge 0580, Edexcel Specification A or Specification B, and the tier. Count the marks lost to blank answers on the marked mock and attack those topics first. Then buy the cheapest format that can solve the problem you have named, which is sometimes the school's own clinic. Teaching here is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; home tutoring is an India-only service for us. Last reviewed 22 October 2026.
