IB Home Tutor in Al Garhoud

Most people searching for an IB home tutor in Al Garhoud are asking one question underneath the words: is there anybody near me who actually knows this syllabus? This page answers it without flattery. It sets out which IB subjects have real specialist supply, how to test a tutor's syllabus knowledge in ten minutes, how to check a tutor is legally permitted to teach in the UAE, and why a Garhoud family is better served by a wider pool than by a shorter drive.

IB & IGCSE in Al Garhoud

The real question behind an IB home tutor search in Al Garhoud

Al Garhoud is a small, settled neighbourhood wedged between Dubai International Airport, the Creek and Al Garhoud Bridge. It has villas on quiet streets, a golf club, a handful of hotels and a school population that is largely out of the area by 7:30am. When a parent here types an IB home tutor in Al Garhoud into Google, the search looks geographic, and it is not. Nobody wants a tutor because they live nearby. They want one who has taught their child's exact course, and nearby is simply the only filter Google offers.

That matters more in the IB Diploma than in almost any other curriculum, because the Diploma is not one qualification. It is six subjects chosen from six groups, three normally at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. A student doing Chemistry HL, Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL and History HL needs three different specialists, and two of those three are genuinely scarce in any single Dubai neighbourhood. A tutor who taught GCSE science for a decade is not a Chemistry HL tutor, and will not know what the HL-only material demands.

So the honest version of the answer runs like this. Within a short drive of Al Garhoud you will find competent generalists, a reasonable number of Mathematics and Physics tutors, fewer Chemistry HL specialists, very few for History HL, Economics HL or a Group 2 language at the right level, and almost nobody who has supervised an Extended Essay to completion. That is not a complaint about Garhoud; it is arithmetic. The IB accounts for roughly 7 per cent of Dubai private school enrolment while the UK curriculum accounts for 37 per cent, so IB-specialist supply is thin everywhere and thinner in a neighbourhood of this size.

IB Gram's answer is to drop the geographic filter entirely. All UAE tuition is delivered online, one-to-one, over live video with screen sharing and a shared whiteboard. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits exist only in our India service. We state it this plainly because the phrase parents search is a home-tutor phrase and nobody should discover the format after paying. In exchange, a Garhoud student is matched against every available specialist for their exact subject and level rather than the subset who will drive over Al Garhoud Bridge at 5pm.

The rest of this page is built to be used rather than read. There is a coverage table that says which IB subjects have real specialist depth and which do not. There is a list of questions to ask a prospective tutor, with the weak and strong answers written out, so a parent can run the test themselves. There is a permit table so you can check the person teaching your child is working legally. There are the Dubai market rates in dirhams with every figure attributed. And there is a plain statement of what a tutor may and may not do with an Internal Assessment, because some of the results in this search sell finished coursework.

At a glance

  • The IB Diploma is six separate courses, not one subject
  • HL and SL are different syllabuses, not the same course at two speeds
  • Specialist scarcity is worst in Group 3 subjects, languages and Extended Essay supervision
  • A MoHRE private tuition permit is free and valid two years - you can ask to see it
  • Lessons here are online; home visits are an India-only service
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Al Garhoud families touch the IB at three different points, and the tutoring question is different at each. A PYP child needs skills, an MYP child needs criterion literacy, and a Diploma student needs a subject specialist with a mark scheme open.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Transdisciplinary and inquiry-based, with no examinations and no subject marks. Reporting is against conceptual understanding and learner profile attributes. Children leave the PYP articulate and used to presenting work, and sometimes under-practised in written fluency and number facts, which is where almost all PYP tutoring requests actually sit.

Garhoud's primary-age children are spread across schools in Oud Metha, Festival City and Al Qusais rather than concentrated in one. PYP requests from this area are mostly about reading age and times tables, and the sensible format is short, frequent, cheerful online sessions rather than a long weekly block.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1 to MYP 5

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups, each assessed against four criteria marked out of 8 for a total of 32, converted to a 1-7 grade. The Personal Project falls in MYP 5. A parent reading an MYP report without the criteria in front of them cannot act on it, which is why the first job here is usually translation rather than teaching.

Several families in this part of old Dubai move into an IB school from an Indian or British middle school, arriving in MYP 3 or 4. The gap is rarely content. It is the shift from marks out of 100 to four criterion descriptors, and from answering questions to designing investigations.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects across six groups, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, with Theory of Knowledge, a 4,000-word Extended Essay and CAS. Most assessment is external and sat in one session, with internal assessment coursework in every subject. HL papers carry additional content and an extra paper in the sciences.

This is where the specialist question bites in Al Garhoud. Deira International School and Universal American School across the water in Festival City run Diploma courses, and students from them typically need two or three different subject specialists at once, plus somebody competent to supervise an Extended Essay process.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below are the Diploma subjects Al Garhoud families ask about most, with a note on what each one actually assesses and where the marks go missing. Availability differs sharply between them, and the coverage table further down is honest about which.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Algebraic, proof-heavy and the usual prerequisite for engineering and economics degrees. HL adds substantial content and a third paper that permits a calculator and rewards sustained multi-step reasoning. Marks are lost on unjustified steps and on the exploration, where students pick a topic too broad to show personal engagement.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling and statistics-led, with heavier technology use. It suits students heading for business, design, medicine-adjacent and social science routes, but some universities specify Analysis and Approaches for quantitative degrees. The route decision should be made against named university entry requirements, not against which course looks easier.

Chemistry

HL and SL

The HL course adds depth across organic chemistry, energetics and equilibrium, and HL students sit an extra paper. The common failure is confident recall with weak application: students can define enthalpy and cannot interpret an unfamiliar data set. The internal assessment needs a question narrow enough to generate real quantitative data.

Physics

HL and SL

Mechanics and electricity dominate early, with fields and quantum physics later. Students who arrived from IGCSE often lose marks because they treat an explanation question as a definition question. Written answers must connect a cause to an effect using the correct quantity; practising that phrasing is more productive than re-reading the topic.

Biology

HL and SL

Content-heavy with precise command-term expectations. The difference between outline, explain and evaluate decides several marks per paper. Data-based questions reward careful reading of axes and units, and the internal assessment needs a measurable variable rather than an interesting idea.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy carries much of the mark: correctly labelled axes, shifted curves, identified areas. HL adds quantitative content and policy depth. The internal assessment is a set of commentaries on recent news articles, and students lose marks by summarising the article instead of applying a named diagram and theory to it.

History

HL and SL

Source evaluation, essay structure and knowledge of prescribed topics. HL adds a regional depth study. The internal assessment is a historical investigation with a strict word limit and a required evaluation of sources. This is one of the hardest subjects to find a local specialist for in any single Dubai neighbourhood.

Business Management

HL and SL

Tools and frameworks applied to real organisations, with HL adding further content and a pre-seen case study element. Marks go missing when students describe a framework rather than using it to reach a judgement. The internal assessment requires genuine research, which means planning access to information early.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Textual analysis across literary and non-literary texts, with an individual oral and a written assessment. HL adds a further essay component. The bottleneck is almost always analysis of technique rather than reading comprehension, and it responds quickly to a repeatable paragraph structure built on one device and its effect.

Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and CAS

Core, all DP students

The TOK exhibition and essay, a 4,000-word Extended Essay in a chosen subject, and CAS. These are supervised in school and are where timelines slip. A tutor may coach planning, question research design and teach referencing, but may not write or draft any part of the submission.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats answer nearly every IB request from this part of Dubai. All are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video, with slots booked in Gulf Standard Time around the actual school arrival time.

Subject specialist, weekly through the course

One fixed weekly slot per subject with the same specialist across a term or a year. This is the format Diploma students need, because the content is cumulative and a tutor who knows what was covered in September can diagnose a December problem in minutes rather than hours.

  • Same tutor and slot, 50 or 80 minutes
  • Worked against the school's own scheme of work
  • Past-paper questions chosen for the topic, not at random
  • Written note after each session

Two specialists, one student

Diploma students frequently need two subjects at once, most often a Group 4 science and Mathematics. Two different specialists on two evenings is almost always better than one generalist covering both, and it is the arrangement a local-only search cannot produce.

  • Separate specialist per subject and level
  • Slots on different evenings to protect homework time
  • One plan covering both, so the load is visible
  • Either subject can pause without disturbing the other

Short diagnostic block

Three or four sessions aimed at a single problem: a paper technique, an internal assessment research question, a topic that never landed. Families use this when they are unsure tutoring is needed at all, and it is the cheapest way to find out.

  • Three or four sessions inside a fortnight
  • Begins with the most recent marked paper
  • Ends with a written statement of what remains
  • No commitment to a term-long booking

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Garhoud

01

What a search for a tutor near Al Garhoud actually returns

Type the phrase and you get three kinds of result. Agencies that serve all of Dubai and have no particular presence in Garhoud, marketplaces listing independent tutors by distance, and content pages written to rank rather than to inform. Almost none of them tell you the one thing that decides the outcome: whether anybody on their books has taught your child's subject at your child's level and read its current mark scheme.

The distance filter is actively misleading for the IB. A tutor three kilometres away who teaches British curriculum GCSE maths is a worse match for Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL than a specialist who is not in Dubai at all, because the HL course includes content and a paper the GCSE teacher has never seen. The same applies in reverse: an excellent Diploma Chemistry tutor is the wrong person for a Year 7 reading problem. Matching on subject and level is the only filter that predicts anything.

The second thing the search hides is the gap between an agency saying yes and a specialist being free. Any agency will take an enquiry for History HL. Fewer can produce someone who has supervised a historical investigation. Asking when the tutor will start, and who specifically, usually separates the two inside one phone call. If the answer is that a tutor will be assigned later, ask for the subject and level they have actually taught before you pay anything.

This page takes the opposite approach and publishes coverage, including the weak spots, in the table below. Availability moves week to week, so treat these as the shape of supply rather than a live inventory, and ask us for the current position on your exact subject.

Ten minutes that tell you whether a tutor knows the syllabus

Parents are asked to judge subject expertise they do not have, which is an unfair test, so here is a fair one. Four questions, each with a weak and a strong answer written out. Any competent IB specialist will answer all four without hesitation. A generalist will be vague on at least three. You do not need to understand the subject to hear the difference.

The questions work because they probe structure rather than content. Anybody can claim to know Chemistry. Only somebody who has taught the Diploma course can tell you how many papers an HL student sits, what the internal assessment is worth, which command terms appear in which paper, and what separates a 5 from a 6 in practice. Ask them during the trial lesson rather than on the phone, and ask the student afterwards whether the tutor used the mark scheme or just explained the topic.

One more test is worth running before you commit. Ask the tutor to mark one page of your child's most recent written work in front of you, out loud, saying what each annotation is worth. A specialist does this comfortably and names the mark scheme language. A generalist corrects spelling and says it looks fine. That single exercise has saved more Garhoud families a wasted term than any review page.

If a tutor declines to be asked these questions, that is itself the answer. A specialist is usually pleased to be asked, because it is the first time anybody has treated their expertise as a thing with content. Run the questions during the free trial rather than over the phone, where anybody can sound convincing, and write the answers down so you can compare two tutors honestly a week apart.

Is the person teaching your child legally permitted to do it?

Private tutoring in the UAE is permitted work, not informal work, and most parents do not know this. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is administered through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. It is granted free of charge for two years. Anybody who tells you a permit costs money, or that permits are optional, is wrong on a point of fact you can verify on u.ae in a minute.

Eligibility is broad rather than narrow. The published categories include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's own service listing is issuance of a new work permit for private tutor licensing, with a stated two-working-day completion time, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. A tutor who has not heard of it has not looked.

Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so any specific amount you see quoted online is unverified and should be ignored. Separately, a tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai is a different legal animal from an individual tutor: it requires a KHDA educational services permit for a training institute. IB Gram is not KHDA licensed, holds no such permit, and does not operate premises in the UAE, which is why you will not see that claim anywhere on this site.

Abu Dhabi adds a rule reported in the local press and worth knowing even in Dubai: ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar private and charter school staff from providing paid tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct carries a similar restriction. If a tutor offers to teach your child privately while teaching them at school, that is a question to take to the school, not a convenience.

What you are buying when you pay a travel premium

A parent can check almost all of this for themselves, which is the point of publishing it. Search any two Dubai tutoring providers and compare their advertised monthly packages: online blocks appear around AED 799 for eight sessions, while in-home monthly packages of four two-hour sessions appear at roughly AED 1,599 to 1,799. Same number of contact hours, double the money. The difference is not the teaching. It is a car crossing Al Garhoud Bridge twice.

Hourly figures tell the same story and are easy to verify against the sources. Tutopiya advertises from about AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65, both online, both generally generalist. Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. TutorChase publishes AED 270. Bestimate's Dubai rate table puts specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350, and independent home tutors as high as AED 500. BartyED publishes AED 650 at the named or examiner-level end. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-range, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist examination-year support.

Those are market figures read in October 2026, not IB Gram's prices, and they are listed here so a Garhoud parent can tell a fair quote from an inflated one. Our own model is a free trial lesson first, one per subject before any payment, then a written quote against a plan — because Mathematics SL for one term and Chemistry HL through a final year are not the same commitment and should not carry the same number.

The useful conclusion is not that in-home tutoring is bad value. It is that the travel premium buys proximity, and proximity is the one variable that does not affect how well a Diploma subject is taught. Spend the same money on a better-matched specialist and the hour does more.

Why proximity stopped being the useful constraint

Ten years ago a tutor had to be local because the lesson needed a table. That constraint is gone, and what replaced it is better suited to the IB than the old arrangement ever was. A shared screen shows the marked paper, the mark scheme and the student's working at the same time. Annotations are saved, so the next session starts from the last one rather than from memory. A past paper can be opened mid-sentence. None of that happens around a kitchen table with a single printed sheet.

The operational gains matter as much as the pedagogical ones in this part of Dubai. A session does not depend on airport-road traffic. An illness moves a slot by a day instead of losing it. A family travelling over a long weekend can keep the session. A student who finishes an examination at 11am can take a lesson at noon. For Diploma students in a final year, where missing two weeks of a cumulative subject is genuinely costly, that reliability is worth more than a tutor's postcode.

The trade is real and should be stated. A young child may focus less well on a screen. A household with no quiet corner finds it harder. A student who needs physical apparatus handled for them cannot have that online. For those cases in-home tutoring is the better choice, and a Garhoud family can find it in the market at the rates published above. IB Gram simply does not sell it here, because home visits are part of our India service and not a UAE one.

For a Diploma student choosing between a specialist on a screen and a generalist at the table, though, there is not much of an argument. The subject is the constraint. Everything else is logistics.

06

The Diploma subjects where a generalist genuinely cannot help

  • Mathematics AA HL: extra paper, extra content, exploration criteria a generalist has not read
  • History HL: prescribed topics, timed source work, a word-limited investigation
  • Economics HL: diagram precision is the mark scheme
  • Group 2 languages: level and oral format matter more than fluency

Some IB subjects can be taught adequately by a strong graduate who reads the syllabus carefully. Others cannot, and it is worth being specific about which, because this is exactly where a local-only search fails a Garhoud family.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is the clearest case. The HL course includes material and an extra paper that no British A-Level or IGCSE teacher will have taught, and the internal assessment demands a topic with enough mathematical substance to show genuine personal engagement without exceeding what the student can actually handle. A tutor who has not read HL exploration criteria will approve a topic that cannot score well, and the student discovers this months later.

History HL is the second. It requires knowledge of prescribed subjects and world history topics, source evaluation under timed conditions, and a historical investigation with a strict word limit and a required source evaluation section. A generalist can improve essay writing in general and cannot teach the specific structures the papers reward. Economics HL is similar in a different way: the diagrams are the marks, and a tutor who draws them imprecisely teaches a student to lose marks neatly.

Group 2 languages are the quiet problem. Students are placed in a phase or a course level rather than a year group, and a tutor who teaches the language fluently but does not know the assessment at that level will drill vocabulary the student does not need. Ask any prospective language tutor which course and level they have taught, and what the oral component requires, before anything else. The same caution applies to Extended Essay supervision, which is a process skill rather than a subject one and is the single most commonly over-promised service in this market.

07

Internal assessments, the Extended Essay and the line a tutor cannot cross

In this search result you will find at least one operation selling completed Internal Assessments. A family should know what that is before they consider it: under IB rules it is malpractice, the investigation falls on the student, and the possible outcome is the loss of the Diploma. The website that took the payment faces nothing. That asymmetry is the whole reason to be clear about where legitimate help stops.

What a tutor may do is substantial. They may teach the subject content the assessment rests on. They may help a student narrow a research question until it is answerable. They may explain the assessment criteria, read them with the student, and mark a completed draft against them. They may teach referencing and show how to acknowledge a source. They may question a method, point out that a data set will not support a conclusion, and insist on a timeline. They may teach the student how to write a reflection that identifies a decision and its consequence.

What a tutor may not do is write, draft, edit to completion or produce any part of the submission, supply data the student did not collect, or dictate sentences for transcription. The practical test is whether the student can explain, unprompted, why every sentence and every decision is in the work. If they cannot, it should not be there. Any tutor who offers more than this is offering your child a risk disguised as a service.

Stated positively: the help worth paying for is the help that transfers. A student taught to evaluate their own data against a criterion can do it in the next assessment, in the Extended Essay, and at university. A student handed a finished piece has bought one grade and learned nothing, and has an inconsistency sitting on their record.

08

KHDA, MoE equivalency, and what Garhoud parents should plan for early

Dubai's private schools are overseen by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which the UAE government describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Across the other emirates the map is different: Abu Dhabi and Al Ain fall under ADEK, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools there; Sharjah under the Sharjah Private Education Authority; Ras Al Khaimah under its Department of Knowledge; and Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah under the federal Ministry of Education. Sharjah's and Ras Al Khaimah's authorities approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods, so the regulator does more than inspect.

The number worth knowing is scale. Dubai's private sector held 387,441 students across 227 private schools offering 17 curricula in 2024-25, with the UK curriculum at 37 per cent of enrolment, Indian at 26 per cent, American at 14 per cent and the IB at 7 per cent. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that fees would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year under an incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion, and seven new private schools were confirmed for that intake, three of them IB, adding 16,846 places.

The thing Garhoud families most often leave too late is equivalency. For students on a British track, Ministry of Education equivalency requires passes in five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus either one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects. One competitor page currently ranking states that UAE candidates must take six IGCSE subjects, which is wrong; the published rule is five. On the American track, English proficiency can be shown with a score of 5 in IELTS academic, 61 in TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the SAT reading and writing section, and mathematics requires at least 450 in SAT Math.

For the IB there is no points threshold published in the source above, so no figure appears here. Confirm the IB requirement on moe.gov.ae or with the emirate's attestation authority before planning around it. Equivalency is a process the Ministry runs, not something a tutoring service performs or can promise, and tutoring is not required for it.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Garhoud

Al Garhoud sits inside the old-Dubai belt on the Deira side of the Creek, where neighbourhoods are compact and the school run crosses them constantly. Session timing here is set by which bridge or tunnel a family uses, not by how far they live from a tutor.

Al Garhoud

Low-rise villas and compounds between the airport and the Creek, with Al Mawakeb School Al Garhoud inside the area and the Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club at its edge. Short, predictable journeys locally; the delay is always the bridge.

Dubai Festival City

Directly across the water and home to Deira International School and Universal American School. A large share of Garhoud's Diploma students study here, arriving home around 3:45pm to 4:15pm on a normal day.

Oud Metha and Al Jaddaf

The school belt on the Bur Dubai side, carrying several long-established schools. Families here reach Garhoud in minutes outside peak and in considerably longer during it, which pushes sessions to 5pm or later.

Deira and Al Muteena

Dense older districts north of the Creek with large-roll schools and limited parking. In-home tutoring is operationally awkward here, which is part of why online uptake in this belt has been quicker than in the newer villa communities.

Al Qusais and Al Nahda

A concentrated school district east of the airport running several of Dubai's biggest British and Indian curriculum schools. Garhoud students at these schools finish early but travel across the airport road at the worst hour.

Karama and Al Mankhool

Apartment districts with a high share of households where both parents work full time. Evening slots after 6pm are commonest here, and a fixed weekly time matters more than it does for families with a stay-at-home parent.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

The eastern suburbs, reachable from Garhoud but a genuine drive at the wrong hour. Families sometimes start with an in-home tutor from this side and switch to online once a second subject is added and the logistics stop working.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the subject and the level, first message

Mathematics AA HL and Mathematics AI SL are different requests and get different people. Tell us the subject, the level, the year of study and the most recent grade or predicted grade, and the reply can be specific instead of generic. If it is urgent, say what the deadline is.

  2. 02

We tell you who, or we tell you no

You get a named tutor with the subject and level they have taught, or an honest statement that nobody suitable is free and when that is likely to change. We do not fill a Chemistry HL request with an IGCSE science tutor to avoid saying no.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson, one per subject

One free trial lesson per subject before any payment is taken, taken with the most recent marked work open. Use it to run the four questions in the section above, and ask your child afterwards whether the tutor used the mark scheme or only explained the topic.

  4. 04

A written plan with a target

After the trial you get a short plan naming what each block of sessions covers, which school assessment it is aimed at, and how you will know whether it worked. If two subjects are involved, the plan says which has priority and why.

  5. 05

Reviewed on marked work, not on vibes

The review point is the next marked paper or assessment, not a fixed number of weeks. If the grade moved, we keep going or change the target. If it did not, we change the tutor or the approach and tell you which we think is the problem.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Coverage published, gaps included

The table on this page says which IB subjects have real specialist depth for a Garhoud family and which do not. No competitor in this market publishes a coverage limit. Knowing in advance that History HL may take a fortnight is more useful than being told yes and waiting anyway.

Matched on subject and level, not distance

Because lessons are online, the filter is the syllabus rather than the drive. A student needing Mathematics AA HL gets somebody who has taught the HL course and read its exploration criteria, which a radius search around Al Garhoud cannot reliably produce.

The format is stated up front

All UAE lessons are online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that is part of our India service. We put that in the opening paragraph rather than the footer, because a parent searching a home-tutor phrase deserves to know before booking.

Rates with sources, not dollars

Every AED figure here is attributed to whoever published it and dated October 2026, so you can check it. Three of the pages ranking for Dubai tutoring queries publish no price at all and the two that do quote dollars, which is not the currency a Garhoud household pays in.

Permits treated as a parent's right to ask

The permit table exists so you can verify the person teaching your child is working legally. The private tuition permit is free and runs two years, so there is no reason for a legitimate tutor to be unable to show one.

Academic honesty written down

We teach, question, mark and coach process. We do not write or draft internal assessments, Extended Essays or TOK work, and the section above states exactly where the line sits. In a search result containing sellers of finished coursework, that is worth reading first.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Garhoud: your questions answered

Is there actually an IB specialist near Al Garhoud who knows my child's syllabus?+

For Mathematics and the sciences at Standard Level, usually yes somewhere in east Dubai. For Mathematics AA HL, History HL, Economics HL or a Group 2 language at the right level, often not within a sensible drive of Al Garhoud, because the IB accounts for roughly 7 per cent of Dubai private enrolment and specialist supply follows enrolment. That is why we match online on subject and level instead of on distance. If nobody suitable is free we say so and give a realistic date rather than substituting a tutor who has taught a different qualification.

Will IB Gram send someone to our villa in Al Garhoud?+

No. Every UAE lesson runs online, one-to-one, over live video with screen sharing and a shared whiteboard. Home visits are part of our India service and are not offered anywhere in the UAE. We say this in the first paragraph because the phrase most parents search is a home-tutor phrase, and the format should never be a surprise after payment. In-home tutoring does exist in the Dubai market at AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel, so a family who needs that format can find it; we simply are not the provider of it.

How do I test whether a tutor really knows the IB course?+

Ask four things. How many papers does my child sit in this subject at this level. What is the internal assessment worth and what must it contain. Which command terms cost marks most often. What separates a 5 from a 6 in practice. A specialist answers all four precisely; a generalist is vague on at least three. Then ask them to mark one page of your child's work aloud, saying what each annotation is worth. Mark-scheme language means they have marked before. Spelling corrections and reassurance mean they have not.

Should I ask an Al Garhoud tutor to show me a MoHRE permit?+

Yes. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, administered by MoHRE, and is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible categories include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE lists the service as issuance of a new work permit for private tutor licensing with a two-working-day completion time. Tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and because no fine schedule is published, you should disregard any specific amount quoted online.

Can my child's own schoolteacher tutor them privately for extra money?+

Be careful. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit paid private tutoring of students enrolled at the teacher's own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct carries a similar restriction on serving students affiliated with the tutor's school. Treat the detail as press-reported and verify the current policy. Beyond the rules, there is an obvious conflict in paying the person who sets and marks your child's assessments. If the teaching is not working at school, the first conversation belongs with the school.

How much should I expect to pay an IB tutor in old Dubai?+

Published market figures read in October 2026: budget online generalists advertise from around AED 33 to 65 an hour, qualified subject tutors online AED 150 to 300, IB specialists AED 200 to 450 and above, in-home visits AED 180 to 500 including travel, and premium named tutors up to AED 650. Monthly, Bestimate estimates AED 240 to 600 for budget weekly sessions, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-range and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist examination-year support. Those are market rates, not ours; we quote after a free trial against a written plan.

Why is a travel premium of AED 100 an hour not worth paying?+

Because it buys proximity, and proximity does not affect how well Chemistry HL is taught. Compare two advertised Dubai packages and the arithmetic is visible: online blocks appear at roughly AED 799 a month for eight sessions, in-home monthly packages at AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour sessions. The same contact hours cost about double. If a family genuinely needs a tutor in the room, that premium is reasonable. If the reason is habit, the same money spent on a better-matched specialist buys considerably more teaching.

My child does Maths AA HL and Chemistry HL. Do we need two tutors?+

Almost certainly. Those are two separate syllabuses with separate papers, separate internal assessments and separate failure modes, and very few people teach both at Higher Level credibly. Two specialists on two evenings is the normal arrangement, with one written plan covering both so the total workload stays visible. This is exactly the request a distance-based search handles badly, because the chance of finding both specialisms within a short drive of Al Garhoud at the same time is low.

What is the Extended Essay and how much can a tutor help with it?+

It is an independent piece of research of up to 4,000 words in a subject the student chooses, supervised in school and assessed externally. A tutor may help narrow the research question, teach research method and referencing, read the assessment criteria with the student, question whether the evidence supports the argument, and hold the student to a timeline. A tutor may not write, draft or edit the essay to completion, and may not supply material the student then presents as their own. Most Extended Essays fail on timeline rather than on ability, so the coaching that matters is scheduling.

What is the difference between Higher Level and Standard Level in practice?+

They are different syllabuses rather than the same course at two speeds. HL carries additional content, more teaching hours, and in several subjects an extra examination paper. Internal assessment requirements can also differ in scope. The practical consequence for tutoring is that an SL specialist is not automatically an HL one, and a tutor who has only taught SL will not know what the HL-only topics demand. Ask specifically which level a prospective tutor has taught, and do not accept the subject name alone as the answer.

How quickly can a tutor start if our deadline is in three weeks?+

For Mathematics or a science at Standard Level, usually within a few days. For Mathematics AA HL or a Group 4 subject at Higher Level, up to a week. For History, Psychology or a language at the right level, two weeks or more is realistic, which may be after your deadline. We will say that rather than start a match we cannot complete. If the deadline cannot move, a short diagnostic block with an available generalist can sometimes stabilise examination technique while the specialist search continues.

Which schools do Al Garhoud students mostly attend?+

Al Mawakeb School Al Garhoud sits inside the area, and a large share of older students cross the Creek to Dubai Festival City for Deira International School or Universal American School, both of which carry IB Diploma provision. Others travel to Oud Metha for schools such as The Indian High School Dubai, St Mary's Catholic High School or Dubai Gem Private School, or east to Al Qusais for The Millennium School Dubai and Westminster School Dubai. These names are local context only; we have no affiliation with any of them.

What time do lessons realistically start for a Garhoud family?+

It depends on the school rather than the home. A child at Al Mawakeb School Al Garhoud is home quickly and can start at 4pm. A child crossing to Dubai Festival City arrives closer to 3:45pm or 4:15pm on a normal day, which makes 5pm the safer slot. Families commuting from Al Qusais or Oud Metha through the airport road at peak usually settle on 5:30pm or 6pm. Because sessions are online, the slot can be set to the real arrival time and changed permanently if the route changes.

What does UAE Ministry of Education equivalency require for an IGCSE student?+

On the British track the published requirement is passes in five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus either one accredited Advanced Level subject at no less than E or two Advanced Subsidiary Level subjects at the same grade. One currently ranking competitor page states six subjects are required, which does not match the published rule. For the IB there is no points figure in that source, so confirm it on moe.gov.ae before planning around it.

Can a tutor help with an Internal Assessment without risking malpractice?+

Yes, inside a clear boundary. A tutor may teach the underlying content, help narrow a research question, explain and mark against the assessment criteria, teach referencing, challenge a method that will not produce usable data, and enforce a timeline. A tutor may not write, draft or edit the work to completion, supply data the student did not collect, or dictate sentences. The working test is whether the student can explain any sentence or decision in the submission without prompting. At least one site in this search sells finished internal assessments; that is malpractice and the consequence lands on the student.

What happens if the first tutor is not the right fit?+

Say so early rather than waiting for a report. Fit problems usually show in the first two or three sessions and are often about pace or manner rather than expertise. We will change the tutor and say whether we think the mismatch was personality, level or subject, because the three need different replacements. The written plan exists partly for this reason: if the target criterion or paper technique has not moved by the review point, the plan itself is evidence about whether the approach or the person was the problem.

Ask for the name and the level before you pay anything

The single most useful thing a Garhoud parent can do is refuse to book a tutor who has not been named, with the subject and level they have actually taught stated out loud. Send us the subject, the level, the year and the next deadline, and you will get either a named specialist or an honest no with a date. The first lesson is free, one per subject, taken before any payment, and it is best spent running the four questions on this page with your child's most recent marked work on screen. Lessons are online, one-to-one, over live video, in Gulf Standard Time.
