IB MYP Tutor in Jumeirah Village Triangle

Parents looking for an IB MYP tutor in Jumeirah Village Triangle usually arrive with the same complaint: the report gives four numbers out of eight and nobody has explained what they mean or how to move them. This page decodes the criteria, shows how achievement levels become a 1-7 grade, sets out the Personal Project, and compares MYP with IGCSE for a Dubai family choosing between them. Teaching is one-to-one over live video; IB Gram makes no UAE home visits.

IB & IGCSE in Jumeirah Village Triangle

A report full of numbers out of eight, and what they mean

The Middle Years Programme reports differently from everything a British or Indian curriculum parent has seen before, and that is the first problem. There is no percentage and no letter. Instead each subject returns four achievement levels, one per criterion, each out of 8, which are then totalled out of 32 and converted to a grade from 1 to 7 using published boundaries. A parent looking at 5, 6, 4, 3 in Mathematics has a precise diagnosis in front of them and no way to read it.

Reading it changes what you buy. The four MYP mathematics criteria are Knowing and understanding, Investigating patterns, Communicating, and Applying mathematics in real-life contexts. A student scoring well on the first and poorly on the third does not have a mathematics problem; they have a communication problem, and no amount of extra topic teaching will fix it. A student scoring well on the first and poorly on the fourth cannot transfer a technique into an unfamiliar context, which is a different intervention again. The report is telling you which of the four to work on, and most families never find out.

The second thing worth knowing is that the criteria differ by subject group. The sciences use Knowing and understanding, Inquiring and designing, Processing and evaluating, and Reflecting on the impacts of science. Language and literature uses Analysing, Organising, Producing text, and Using language. Individuals and societies uses Knowing and understanding, Investigating, Communicating, and Thinking critically. Learning which four apply to which subject takes ten minutes and makes every future report legible. It also makes a parents' evening a different conversation, because you can ask about a named criterion rather than asking whether the term went well.

Third, the Personal Project, which students complete in the final MYP year. It is assessed against its own criteria, it is the single largest independent piece of work a student has produced to that point, and it is where a tutor's role is narrowest — process coaching only, because the project must be the student's own. Families in Jumeirah Village Triangle ask about it more than any other MYP component, usually in the term it is due rather than the year before. That timing is itself the problem: the criteria reward a documented process, and a process cannot be documented retrospectively without it showing.

And fourth, the comparison a Dubai family actually faces: MYP or IGCSE at fourteen. Both lead to the Diploma or to A Levels, both are respectable, and they prepare a student differently. This page sets out that comparison honestly rather than advocating, because the right answer depends on the child and on where they are heading. Teaching is delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with no home visits anywhere in the UAE.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The MYP sits between the Primary Years Programme and the Diploma, and the useful work differs sharply at each boundary. These three stages cover nearly every continuum enquiry from the Jumeirah Village Triangle area.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Inquiry-led and organised around six transdisciplinary themes, with no external examinations and continuous teacher assessment ending in the Year 6 Exhibition. Assessment language is descriptive rather than numerical, so the shift into MYP criteria and achievement levels is the first time a continuum parent sees a number at all. Tutoring at this stage targets fluency and the habit of explaining reasoning aloud.

Fairgreen International School in The Sustainable City and Greenfield International School in Dubai Investments Park both run the PYP within reach of the Triangle. The most frequent PYP request from this area is English writing structure, where a multilingual community often shows a wide gap between confident speech and organised written work.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups studied across five years, each assessed against four criteria scored from 0 to 8, with the criterion total out of 32 converted to a 1-7 grade by published boundaries. Assessment is internal and continuous rather than examination-based, unless the school opts into MYP eAssessment in the final year. The Personal Project is completed in the final year and assessed against its own criteria.

MYP students near Jumeirah Village Triangle attend the continuum schools in the Dubailand corridor rather than schools inside the community, since Sunmarke School and Arcadia Global School are British-curriculum. That means MYP families here are commuting, and sessions from this postcode cluster after 17:00 once the drive home is done.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six examined subjects at Higher and Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service, graded out of 45. The assessment model changes completely from MYP: external examinations carry most of the weight, each subject has an internally assessed component worth 20-25%, and criterion-referenced feedback gives way to papers and mark schemes.

The MYP into Diploma step is the most common reason a Triangle family calls about MYP at all, usually in Year 11. MYP mathematics and sciences build reasoning and design well and drill procedural fluency less, so a student entering DP1 often has strong thinking and slow execution. That gap closes in eight to twelve sessions if addressed before DP1 starts.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The MYP subject groups and components most often requested from the Jumeirah Village Triangle area, each with the criteria that actually decide the grade. The criterion names matter more than the topic lists at this stage.

Mathematics

Standard and Extended

Criteria are Knowing and understanding, Investigating patterns, Communicating, and Applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Most loss sits in Communicating and Applying, where a student solves correctly and then fails to present the reasoning or to connect it to the given context.

Sciences

Integrated or discipline-based

Criteria are Knowing and understanding, Inquiring and designing, Processing and evaluating, and Reflecting on the impacts of science. Inquiring and designing rewards a testable hypothesis with controlled variables; Processing and evaluating rewards honest treatment of data and limitations.

Language and Literature

Years 7-11

Criteria are Analysing, Organising, Producing text, and Using language. Analysing is where marks are won: writing about how a text achieves its effect rather than what it says. Organising credits structure at paragraph and whole-text level, which many strong readers neglect.

Language Acquisition

Phases 1-6

Criteria cover comprehending spoken and visual text, comprehending written and visual text, communicating, and using language. Students progress through phases rather than year groups, so a Year 9 student may sit in a different phase from their classmates.

Individuals and Societies

Years 7-11

Criteria are Knowing and understanding, Investigating, Communicating, and Thinking critically. Thinking critically carries the separation: evaluating sources, recognising perspective and weighing competing interpretations rather than narrating events in order.

Design

Years 7-11

Criteria are Inquiring and analysing, Developing ideas, Creating the solution, and Evaluating. The design cycle is assessed as much as the product, and students lose marks skipping documentation of the inquiry stage because the finished artefact looks complete.

Arts

Years 7-11

Criteria are Knowing and understanding, Developing skills, Thinking creatively, and Responding. The process journal is assessed, not just the final piece, and students who produce strong work without documenting development lose marks across two criteria.

Physical and Health Education

Years 7-11

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, planning for performance, applying and performing, and reflecting and improving performance. The written and reflective components surprise students who expect a practical subject to be assessed practically.

Personal Project

Final MYP year

Assessed against its own criteria covering planning, applying skills, reflecting and the process journal. The product matters less than the documented process, which is the opposite of what most students assume when they choose something ambitious to make.

Interdisciplinary units

Years 7-11

Assessed against interdisciplinary criteria covering disciplinary grounding, synthesising and reflecting. These units often produce a student's lowest levels of the year because the skill being assessed — integrating two subjects — is never taught as a subject in itself.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats for MYP support, all one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. Criterion work, the Personal Project and Diploma preparation are genuinely different jobs.

Criterion-targeted sessions

Work aimed at the specific criterion the report identifies as weakest, rather than at the subject in general. A student with low Communicating levels in mathematics practises presenting reasoning; one with low Applying levels practises transferring a technique into unfamiliar contexts. The criterion descriptors are the reference point in every session.

  • Starts from the report's four achievement levels per subject
  • Published criterion descriptors used directly, not paraphrased
  • Tasks written in the format the school actually assesses
  • Six to eight sessions to move a single criterion reliably

Personal Project supervision

Scheduled backwards from the school's deadlines and structured around the project's own criteria. The emphasis is on the documented process rather than the product, because that is what is assessed. The student plans, makes and writes everything; the tutor questions, checks against the criteria and gives feedback on the student's own drafts.

  • Goal narrowed to something achievable and documentable
  • Process journal reviewed for criterion evidence, not for neatness
  • Criterion-referenced feedback on the student's own report drafts
  • Four to six sessions across the project period

Diploma preparation block

Eight to twelve sessions in the final MYP year or the long holiday before DP1, aimed squarely at the procedural fluency the Diploma assumes and the MYP does not drill. Algebraic manipulation, quantitative chemistry, unit handling and timed writing under pressure. The cheapest intervention available in the whole continuum.

  • Indices, surds, rearrangement and function notation for mathematics
  • Moles, concentration and unit prefixes for the sciences
  • Timed essay writing against a clock rather than a criterion
  • Best taken before DP1 begins, not after the first assessment

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Jumeirah Village Triangle

01

Reading an MYP report: criteria, levels and the 1-7 conversion

An MYP subject report gives four achievement levels, one per criterion, each from 0 to 8. Those four are added to give a total out of 32, and the total is converted to a grade from 1 to 7 using boundaries published by the IB. The two-step structure is the key to reading the report: the grade tells you roughly where the student sits, and the four levels tell you exactly what to do about it.

That diagnostic detail is far better than a percentage, and it is routinely wasted. A student with 7, 7, 3, 3 and a student with 5, 5, 5, 5 can end up on the same total and the same grade, while needing completely different work. The first has secure knowledge and cannot communicate or transfer it; the second is uniformly mid. Teaching both of them more content is the wrong response, and in the first case it is actively wasteful.

The criterion names are published in each subject guide and differ by subject group. In mathematics they are Knowing and understanding, Investigating patterns, Communicating, and Applying mathematics in real-life contexts. In the sciences they are Knowing and understanding, Inquiring and designing, Processing and evaluating, and Reflecting on the impacts of science. In language and literature they are Analysing, Organising, Producing text, and Using language. Learning which four apply to your child's subjects is a ten-minute job that makes every subsequent report legible.

A note on comparability. Because assessment is internal and continuous, MYP levels are awarded by the school against the published descriptors rather than by an external examiner. Schools moderate internally and the IB provides guidance, but a level 6 at one school and a level 6 at another are not calibrated against each other the way an examination grade is. This is not a criticism of the programme; it is a reason to read the descriptors yourself rather than to treat the number as absolute.

02

The four criteria, subject group by subject group

The criterion sets are the single most useful thing an MYP parent can learn, because they explain why a bright student can score poorly and a methodical one can score well. Each subject group has four, and they assess genuinely different things. Teaching a student more content when the weak criterion is Communicating or Reflecting is the most common error in MYP tutoring, and it is made because nobody looked up the criterion names.

In the sciences, Inquiring and designing rewards a testable hypothesis with a clear rationale, identified variables and a method a peer could follow. Processing and evaluating rewards correct processing, honest presentation and discussion of the method's limitations. A student who runs an experiment well and writes 'the results were as expected' has produced no evidence for either criterion. These are writing skills attached to scientific thinking, and they are teachable.

In individuals and societies, Thinking critically is where separation happens: evaluating sources for origin, purpose and limitation, recognising that an account has a perspective, and weighing competing interpretations rather than listing them. In language and literature, Analysing rewards writing about how a text produces its effect rather than what it contains, which is the step most capable readers have to be taught explicitly.

In design and the arts, the process is assessed alongside the product, which catches out students who make something good without documenting how. A beautifully finished design artefact with no recorded inquiry or development stage loses marks across two criteria, and the student experiences that as unfair because the thing they made is clearly good. Explaining the criterion structure to them, once, usually fixes it permanently.

03

The Personal Project, and where a tutor must stop

The Personal Project is completed in the final MYP year and assessed against its own criteria covering planning, applying skills, reflecting, and the evidence recorded in the process journal. The single most important thing a family can know about it is that the product is not what carries the marks. The documented process is. A student who builds something impressive and keeps no usable journal scores poorly; a student who makes something modest and documents the inquiry, the decisions, the setbacks and the reflection scores well.

That reverses most students' instincts. Asked to choose a goal, they pick the most ambitious thing they can imagine, and the ambition then consumes the time that should have gone into documentation. The useful early intervention is to narrow the goal until it is genuinely achievable in the time available and genuinely documentable, which is a conversation worth having in the first fortnight rather than the last.

The process journal deserves its own paragraph because it is so often misunderstood. It is not a diary and it is not a scrapbook to be made pretty at the end. It is evidence: decisions made and why, sources consulted and what they changed, problems met and how they were addressed, skills attempted and how they developed. A journal assembled retrospectively reads as assembled retrospectively, and the criteria are written to detect exactly that.

Where a tutor must stop is clear and worth stating in full, because this is the component where the line is most often blurred. A tutor may question a proposed goal until it is achievable, explain what each criterion credits using the published descriptors, look at the journal and say which criterion lacks evidence, teach a research or referencing skill, and read a report draft the student wrote and name where it falls short. A tutor may not choose the goal, make the product, write or rewrite any part of the report, or construct the journal. Every word submitted and every decision recorded must be the student's.

PERSONAL PROJECT: WHAT EACH CRITERION CREDITS
Criterion areaWhat it creditsThe common failureWhat a tutor may legitimately do
PlanningA clear, achievable goal with criteria for successA goal too ambitious to complete or documentQuestion the goal until it is achievable
Applying skillsSkills developed and applied toward the goalSkills asserted rather than evidencedExplain what evidence the descriptor wants
ReflectingHonest reflection on the impact and the learningDescribing what was made, not what was learnedAsk the questions reflection has to answer

MYP or IGCSE: the comparison a Dubai family actually faces

At Year 9 options, or at a school move, families in Jumeirah Village Triangle frequently find themselves choosing between an IB continuum school running MYP and a British-curriculum school running IGCSE. Both routes lead onward to either A Levels or the Diploma. Neither is better in the abstract, and the comparison is almost always made on reputation rather than on assessment model, which is the wrong basis.

The substantive difference is what each one trains. MYP assesses against criteria continuously and internally, rewarding inquiry, design, transfer into unfamiliar contexts, and reflection. A student who comes through it well can plan an investigation, justify a method, communicate reasoning and write about their own learning. What they typically have not done is sit a large number of timed written examinations, or drill a procedural skill to automaticity against a clock.

IGCSE assesses externally through timed papers, rewarding content security, procedural fluency, mark-scheme awareness and performance under time pressure. A student who comes through it well can execute reliably at speed and knows what an examiner credits. What they typically have not done is design their own investigation, document a process, or write reflectively about their own thinking.

The practical consequence is that each route leaves a different gap, and both gaps are closable. An MYP student entering DP1 usually needs procedural fluency and timed practice. An IGCSE student entering DP1 usually needs the internally assessed components — the investigation, the Exploration, the Extended Essay — because nothing in IGCSE prepared them for independent extended work. Knowing which gap you are buying is more useful than deciding which curriculum is superior.

05

The MYP to Diploma step, and the cheapest time to close it

  • The MYP to DP step is a change in assessment model, not in difficulty
  • MYP builds reasoning and transfer; the Diploma tests execution under time
  • Eight to twelve sessions before DP1 closes most of the gap
  • The same work after the first DP1 assessment takes longer and costs more
  • The long holiday before DP1 is the highest-value window in the continuum

This is the single most common reason a Jumeirah Village Triangle family calls about MYP, and it almost always arrives too late — in the first term of DP1, after a set of marked papers has come back lower than the MYP grades suggested it would. The step is real, it is predictable, and it is cheap to close in advance and expensive to close afterwards.

What changes is the assessment model, not the difficulty. MYP mathematics rewards investigating patterns and communicating reasoning; Diploma mathematics Paper 1 on the Analysis and Approaches route is sat without a calculator and rewards accurate manipulation at speed. MYP sciences reward inquiry and design; Diploma sciences Paper 2 rewards naming a principle and applying it inside a time limit. MYP language and literature rewards analysis developed over a term; Diploma Paper 1 is guided analysis of an unseen text under examination conditions.

In each case the student has the thinking and not the execution. That is good news, because execution is the more teachable of the two. Eight to twelve sessions of targeted procedural work before DP1 begins — indices, surds, rearrangement and function notation for mathematics; moles, concentration and unit prefixes for the sciences; timed writing against a clock for the humanities — closes most of the gap. The same work after the first DP1 assessment takes longer, because the student is now also behind on new content.

The long holiday between MYP and DP1 is therefore the highest-value tutoring window in the whole continuum, and it is the one almost nobody uses. A family that spends ten sessions in July and August rather than twenty in October and November gets a better result for less money, and the student starts DP1 feeling capable rather than behind.

06

What MYP support costs in Dubai, and why it should cost less than DP

MYP support should be cheaper than Diploma support and often is not, which is worth knowing before you agree a rate. The reason it should be cheaper is that MYP work is criterion-targeted and finite: a student with a weak Communicating level needs six to eight sessions practising the presentation of reasoning, not a two-year weekly commitment. The reason it often is not is that providers price by level of study rather than by the work involved.

The published Dubai bands, read in October 2026: Tutopiya from AED 33-52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45-65 at the entry level; Unitors IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200; Bestimate's 2026 rate table at AED 150-300 for qualified online subject tutors, AED 180-350 for in-home one-to-one, AED 200-450 or above for IB and IGCSE specialists, and independent home tutors reaching AED 500 including travel; TutorChase at AED 270; BartyED at AED 650 at the premium end. Monthly estimates for one weekly hour run roughly AED 240-600, AED 600-1,200 and AED 1,000-2,000 or above across the tiers.

For MYP the sensible shapes are short. A criterion block is six to eight sessions. Personal Project supervision is four to six spread across the project period. A Diploma preparation block is eight to twelve in the holiday before DP1. None of those is an open-ended weekly commitment, and a provider proposing one for a Year 8 student with a single weak criterion is selling a subscription rather than solving a problem.

One context figure worth having: KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in Dubai private school fees for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within an AED 2.5 billion total. School fees are flat, so tutoring is the discretionary line, which is exactly why the shape of the commitment matters more than the hourly rate.

Format, scheduling and the claims we do not make

  • MYP families from JVT commute, so sessions start around 17:00 or later
  • 45 or 60-minute sessions, recorded, with slots to 21:00 Gulf Standard Time
  • One to three working days to match a mainstream MYP subject
  • Ramadan sessions move to post-Iftar timing on request
  • No regulator approval claimed, no UAE office, no fine amounts published

MYP students near Jumeirah Village Triangle are commuters, because the continuum schools are in the Dubailand corridor rather than inside the community. From the Triangle that means a realistic earliest session start of about 17:00, with later slots to 21:00 on Gulf Standard Time for families whose early evening is taken. Sessions run 45 or 60 minutes and are recorded, which matters at this age because a student will often rewatch an explanation rather than ask for it twice.

Home visits exist in the Dubai market and for younger MYP students there is a genuine case for them: a Year 7 or 8 child who cannot yet self-manage a screen works better with an adult in the room. The published bands are AED 180-350 an hour on Bestimate's 2026 rate table, rising to about AED 500 for independent home tutors with travel included. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE — that is an India-only service — so this comparison is offered to inform rather than to argue.

Availability for MYP is good across mathematics, the sciences, language and literature, and individuals and societies, with a match normally inside one to three working days. Language acquisition in a minority language and some arts and design specialisms are thinner, and Personal Project supervision for an unusual goal may need a subject match rather than a general one. Where no UAE-resident specialist is free, the tutor comes from our India-based IB faculty teaching on Gulf Standard Time, and we say so before the booking.

And the claims we do not make. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licensing or partnership from the IB, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education or MoHRE, holds no KHDA Educational Services Permit, and has no UAE office or centre. Separately, private tutoring in the UAE is regulated: the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18 and university students. Individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no amount appears here.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Jumeirah Village Triangle

MYP students joining from Jumeirah Village Triangle come from the continuum schools across the Dubailand corridor rather than from inside the community. These notes cover where the nearest MYP provision actually is and what the commute does to session timing.

Jumeirah Village Triangle

No IB school inside the community: Sunmarke School and Arcadia Global School are British-curriculum. MYP students here commute out, so sessions from this postcode start around 17:00 or later.

The Sustainable City

Fairgreen International School runs the full IB continuum including MYP, making it one of the closest MYP providers to the Triangle and a common destination for continuum-minded families.

Dubai Investments Park

Greenfield International School offers the continuum here. The drive back in afternoon traffic is what pushes realistic session starts towards 17:30 for families on this side.

Arabian Ranches

JESS Arabian Ranches runs the Diploma, so families in this cluster often ask about the MYP to Diploma step rather than about MYP itself, usually in Year 11.

Motor City

GEMS Metropole School runs a British curriculum through IGCSE, so MYP enquiries from this postcode usually come from families comparing the two routes at Year 9 options.

Dubai Hills Estate

Predominantly British-curriculum schools, which makes this the community where the MYP against IGCSE comparison is requested most often before a school move.

Dubai Sports City

Victory Heights Primary School and Bradenton Preparatory Academy skew primary, so enquiries are mostly about the PYP to MYP transition rather than about MYP assessment itself.

Town Square and Mudon

Long school runs and a younger profile. MYP enquiries here concentrate on mathematics criteria and on the Personal Project in the final year.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the report with the four levels

An MYP report carries four achievement levels per subject, each out of 8. Those four numbers are a diagnosis. Send the report rather than a description of how the term went, and the first conversation can be about which criterion to target instead of about the subject in general.

  2. 02

Look up the criterion names together

The four criteria differ by subject group and are published in the subject guide. Ten minutes identifying which four apply to your child's subjects makes every future report legible and prevents the commonest mistake in MYP tutoring, which is teaching more content when the weak criterion is a writing skill.

  3. 03

    Free diagnostic lesson

A full session at no charge, spent on the student's own work against the relevant criterion descriptors. For a Communicating problem that means looking at how reasoning is presented. For an Inquiring and designing problem it means reading a method the student wrote and testing whether a peer could follow it.

  4. 04

A short block with a defined endpoint

Six to eight sessions for one criterion, four to six for Personal Project supervision, eight to twelve for a Diploma preparation block. MYP work should be finite. If a provider proposes an open-ended weekly slot for a single weak criterion, ask what the endpoint is.

  5. 05

Checked against the next school assessment

Progress is judged on the next criterion-assessed task the school sets, read against the descriptor rather than against our own exercises. If the level has not moved, either the descriptor was misread or the work between sessions did not happen, and both are better found early.

Four achievement levels out of 8 per subject tell you exactly which of four distinct skills is weak. We start there rather than with a topic list, because a student with secure knowledge and low Communicating levels does not need more content.

Criterion descriptors used directly

Each level has published wording, and the target is the wording of the level above. Working from the actual descriptor rather than from a general sense of what good looks like is what makes a criterion block finite and checkable.

The Personal Project treated as process

The product carries less than students assume and the documented process carries more. We narrow the goal early so it is achievable and documentable, review the journal for criterion evidence, and never write, make or assemble any part of it.

Short blocks, not subscriptions

Six to eight sessions for a criterion, four to six for the Personal Project, eight to twelve before DP1. MYP work has natural endpoints and we propose them, which bills less than an open-ended weekly slot and is the honest shape for the work.

The Diploma step closed in advance

MYP builds reasoning and the Diploma tests execution under time, so the gap is predictable. Ten sessions in the holiday before DP1 is cheaper and more effective than twenty in October, and the long holiday is the window almost nobody uses.

MYP and IGCSE compared honestly

Neither route is superior; each leaves a different gap for the Diploma. We set out the assessment models side by side so a Year 9 options decision in Jumeirah Village Triangle rests on how your child is assessed rather than on a school's reputation.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Jumeirah Village Triangle: your questions answered

What do the four numbers out of eight on an MYP report mean?+

They are achievement levels, one per assessment criterion, each scored from 0 to 8 against published descriptors. The four are added to give a total out of 32, which the school converts to a grade from 1 to 7 using IB boundaries. The levels are the useful part: a student with 7, 7, 3, 3 and a student with 5, 5, 5, 5 can reach the same grade while needing completely different work. Look at which criterion is lowest and read the descriptor for the level above it, because that wording is the target.

Which criteria does MYP mathematics use?+

Knowing and understanding, Investigating patterns, Communicating, and Applying mathematics in real-life contexts. That set explains a pattern parents find baffling: a child who is good at mathematics scoring poorly overall. Knowing and understanding is the computational criterion; the other three are about recognising structure, presenting reasoning clearly, and transferring a technique into an unfamiliar context. A student strong on the first and weak on the third needs practice presenting working, not more topic teaching, and six to eight sessions normally moves it.

Why is my child's science level low when the experiment went well?+

Because two of the four science criteria assess writing attached to scientific thinking. Inquiring and designing credits a testable hypothesis with a rationale, identified variables and a method a peer could follow. Processing and evaluating credits correct processing, honest presentation and discussion of the method's limitations. A student who runs the experiment competently and writes 'the results were as expected' has produced no evidence for either. The experiment going well is not what is being marked, and this is teachable in a handful of sessions once named.

How should my child choose a Personal Project goal?+

Narrower than instinct suggests. The product carries less than students assume; the documented process carries more, assessed through planning, applying skills, reflecting and the process journal. A goal too ambitious to finish consumes the time that should have gone into documentation, and then two criteria suffer. The useful test is whether the goal can be completed in the time available and whether every decision along the way can be recorded as it happens. That conversation belongs in the first fortnight of the project, not the last.

Can a tutor help with the Personal Project without breaching IB rules?+

Within clear limits, yes. A tutor may question a proposed goal until it is achievable, explain what each criterion credits from the published descriptors, read the process journal and say which criterion lacks evidence, teach a research or referencing skill, and give feedback on a report draft the student wrote. A tutor may not choose the goal, make the product, write or rewrite any part of the report, or help construct the journal retrospectively. Every recorded decision and every submitted word must be the student's own.

Is the process journal really assessed, or is it just a record?+

It is assessed, and it is the component students most often misunderstand. It is not a diary and not a scrapbook to be tidied at the end: it is contemporaneous evidence of decisions made and why, sources consulted and what they changed, problems met and how they were addressed, and skills attempted and how they developed. A journal assembled retrospectively reads as assembled retrospectively, and the criteria are written to detect that. Keeping it badly is the most common reason a good Personal Project scores poorly.

Should a Dubai family choose MYP or IGCSE at Year 9?+

It depends on the child, and the comparison should be made on assessment model rather than reputation. MYP assesses continuously against criteria and rewards inquiry, design, transfer and reflection, but gives a student relatively little timed examination practice. IGCSE assesses externally through timed papers and builds content security, procedural fluency and mark-scheme awareness, but gives a student almost no experience of independent extended work. Each route therefore leaves a different gap for the Diploma, and both gaps are closable if you know which one you are buying.

Why did my child's grades drop when they started DP1 after MYP?+

Because the assessment model changed rather than because the work got harder. MYP mathematics rewards investigating patterns and communicating reasoning; Diploma Analysis and Approaches Paper 1 is sat without a calculator and rewards accurate manipulation at speed. MYP sciences reward inquiry and design; Diploma science papers reward naming a principle and applying it inside a time limit. The student usually has the thinking and not the execution, which is the more teachable of the two. Eight to twelve sessions of procedural work closes most of it.

When is the best time to prepare for the Diploma from MYP?+

The long holiday before DP1 begins, and it is the window almost nobody uses. Ten sessions in July and August on indices, surds, rearrangement and function notation for mathematics, or moles, concentration and unit prefixes for the sciences, or timed writing against a clock for the humanities, closes most of the gap before the first DP1 assessment. The same work in October and November takes longer and costs more, because by then the student is behind on new content as well as short on execution.

Are MYP levels comparable between schools?+

Not in the way an examination grade is. MYP assessment is internal and continuous, awarded by the school against published descriptors, with internal moderation and IB guidance but no external examiner calibrating one school's level 6 against another's. That is not a criticism of the programme, which is designed that way deliberately, but it is a reason to read the descriptors yourself rather than treating the number as absolute. It also means a sixth-form conversation about MYP grades usually needs the descriptors alongside them.

Where can a JVT family find MYP schooling nearby?+

Not inside the community. Sunmarke School and Arcadia Global School are British-curriculum, so MYP students from Jumeirah Village Triangle commute. The closest continuum options are Fairgreen International School in The Sustainable City and Greenfield International School in Dubai Investments Park, with Nord Anglia International School Dubai, North London Collegiate School Dubai and Emirates International School Meadows also within range. Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, three of them IB-curriculum, creating 16,846 places. We name schools as context and hold no relationship with any.

Does an MYP tutor come to the house in Jumeirah Village Triangle?+

Not from us. Home visits exist in the Dubai market at AED 180-350 an hour on Bestimate's 2026 rate table, up to about AED 500 for independent home tutors with travel included, and for a Year 7 or 8 student who cannot yet self-manage a screen there is a genuine case for one. IB Gram delivers UAE tuition one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time and runs home visits only in India. Sessions are 45 or 60 minutes, start from about 17:00 once the commute is done, and are recorded.

How long should an MYP tutoring block last?+

Shorter than most providers propose. Six to eight sessions moves a single criterion reliably. Personal Project supervision is four to six sessions spread across the project period. A Diploma preparation block is eight to twelve in the holiday before DP1. None of those is an open-ended weekly commitment, and a provider offering a year-long slot for a Year 8 student with one weak criterion is selling a subscription rather than solving a problem. Ask what the endpoint is and how it will be measured.

What are interdisciplinary units and why do they score badly?+

They are units assessed against interdisciplinary criteria covering disciplinary grounding, synthesising and reflecting, where a student has to integrate two subjects rather than work within one. They often produce a student's lowest levels of the year, and the reason is structural: integrating two disciplines is the skill being assessed and it is rarely taught as a skill in its own right. Students default to presenting two separate pieces of subject work side by side, which evidences disciplinary grounding and almost nothing for synthesising.

Read the four levels, then buy a short block

An MYP report is more useful than a percentage once you can read it. Four achievement levels out of 8 per subject tell you which of four distinct skills is weak, and the descriptor for the level above tells you what the target actually is. Target one criterion at a time in a block of six to eight sessions. Start the Personal Project early and keep the journal as you go, because the process is what carries the marks. And if the Diploma is next, spend ten sessions in the holiday before DP1 rather than twenty in October. Send the report and take the free diagnostic lesson.
