IB MYP Tutor in Dubai International Academic City

An IB MYP tutor in Dubai International Academic City is usually hired because a report arrived with numbers on it that nobody explained. MYP grades run 1 to 8 and are built from four criteria per subject, each marked out of eight, and the criterion a student is weak on tells you exactly what to work on. This page sets out the criteria subject by subject and the step into the Diploma. Lessons are one-to-one online.

  • Criteria named and explained per subject, not just the overall grade
  • MYP 5 to Diploma bridging taught as a defined skill list
  • Personal Project coached against the criteria, never written
  • Free trial lesson with a written diagnosis afterwards

What an MYP report is telling you, and what it is not

The Middle Years Programme reports differently from any system most parents in this cluster grew up with, and that is the root of most MYP tutoring enquiries. There are no percentages. Each subject is assessed against four published criteria, each marked out of eight, and the four criterion marks are converted to a single grade from 1 to 8 using published boundaries. A grade 5 in science and a grade 5 in English can mean completely different things about a child's skills.

The useful information is therefore underneath the grade rather than in it. In the sciences the criteria are knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. A student scoring 7 on criterion A and 3 on criterion B does not have a science problem; they have an investigation-design problem, and that is a specific, teachable thing. The overall grade of 5 hides exactly the information a parent needs.

The same pattern repeats across subjects with different criterion names. In mathematics the criteria cover knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts, and the weak one is almost always investigating patterns, because generalising a rule and then justifying it is a skill rarely taught directly. In individuals and societies it is usually the criterion on evaluating sources. In language and literature it is producing text or using language.

So the first thing to ask the school for is the criterion-level breakdown, not just the report. Most schools hold it and many will share it when asked directly. With four criterion marks per subject in hand, a tutor can say in one session what the next eight should contain, and a parent can stop guessing whether their child is doing well.

Geography is the other half of the question. Dubai International Academic City is an education free zone off Al Ain Road, built around university branch campuses; its own secondary, Dubai English Speaking College, runs the British curriculum. The MYP schools this cluster uses are elsewhere - Uptown International School in Mirdif and Universal American School in Al Warqa most often, with the Nad Al Sheba and Garhoud schools beyond that. So MYP families here already commute.

One more thing worth knowing before you buy anything. MYP tutoring rewards small targeted purchases far more than open weekly arrangements across several subjects. A term aimed at one named criterion usually achieves more, and costs considerably less, than a year of general support, because the criterion descriptors are specific enough to teach against directly.

IB Gram delivers this online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time. We do not send tutors to homes in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service. For the MYP that matters less than it does at Diploma level, because the local pool of competent MYP tutors is deeper than the pool of Higher Level specialists. It still matters, because criterion-literate MYP tutoring is a narrower skill than general secondary tutoring.

At a glance

  • Each MYP subject is assessed against four criteria, each marked out of eight
  • The four criterion marks convert to one grade from 1 to 8 using published boundaries
  • The weak criterion, not the grade, tells you what to work on
  • In the sciences, criteria B and C cost more marks than criterion A
  • The MYP 5 to Diploma step is a defined skill list, not a general standard
  • Lessons are one-to-one and online; no tutor travels to a UAE address
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

MYP tutoring requests from this cluster arrive at three distinct stages, and the right work differs sharply at each.

MYP13Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

MYP years 1 to 3

The early years, where criteria are applied more gently and the reporting is hardest for parents to read. Tutoring at this stage is most useful for the two things the programme does not drill: arithmetic fluency and written fluency. Both become expensive to fix later and both are cheap to fix now, because nothing is at stake yet.

Families arriving in this cluster from a British or Indian primary often ask whether their child is behind, and the MYP report cannot answer it. The criterion breakdown can. A child scoring well on knowing and understanding and poorly on communicating is not behind in content; they cannot yet write what they know, which is a different six weeks of work.

MYP45Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

MYP years 4 and 5

The years that decide Diploma readiness. Many schools split mathematics into standard and extended at this point, and that split influences whether Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is realistic later. Criteria are applied at full strength and the Personal Project runs alongside, which makes this the busiest stretch of the programme.

In this cluster the schools running MYP 4 and 5 are mostly in Mirdif and Al Warqa, and their mathematics route decisions are made at the end of MYP 3. If Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is a possibility, ask which route the school intends and what evidence would change that view, because the extended route builds the algebraic fluency the Diploma then assumes.

PPMYP 5 · Year 11

The Personal Project

An independent, long-term project with a supervisor, assessed against published criteria covering planning, applying skills, reflecting and the product itself. It is the MYP's largest single piece of independent work and the clearest rehearsal for the Diploma's Extended Essay. It also collides with everything else in MYP 5.

The commonest Personal Project failure in this cluster is a goal too large to complete and too vague to assess - and the second commonest is a process journal kept retrospectively in the last fortnight. A tutor's job here is to interrogate the goal and the criteria and to question the journal entries. The student plans, makes and writes everything.

BRIDGEAges 15-16

MYP 5 into the Diploma

The transition that catches most students in this cluster. The MYP assesses skills against criteria with generous time; the Diploma assumes fluency and examines under time pressure. The gap is specific rather than general: algebraic automaticity, essay structure under timed conditions, and the habit of answering the command term asked rather than the question remembered.

Six to eight sessions in the summer between MYP 5 and the first Diploma year is the best-value tutoring available to a family in this cluster, and almost nobody buys it, because the subject it helps has not started yet. Families who do report a quieter first term and buy fewer hours across the two Diploma years in total.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each entry names the criteria that actually cost marks in that subject, because that is the level at which MYP tutoring is either useful or decorative.

MYP Mathematics, standard and extended

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Investigating patterns is the weak one for most students: finding a rule is manageable, generalising it in correct notation and then justifying it is rarely taught directly and is heavily assessed.

MYP Sciences

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Marks go on criteria B and C rather than A: students who know the content still design weak investigations and process data without evaluating method or reliability.

MYP Individuals and Societies

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating, and thinking critically. The criterion on critical thinking carries the marks students lose, because it requires source evaluation on provenance and perspective rather than a summary of what the source says.

MYP Language and Literature

MYP 1-5

Analysing, organising, producing text, and using language. Students strong on analysis frequently score poorly on using language, where accuracy, register and range are assessed separately from ideas. That split is invisible in a single grade and obvious in the criterion marks.

MYP Language Acquisition

Phases 1-6

Comprehending spoken and visual text, comprehending written and visual text, communicating, and using language. Assessed by phase rather than by year group, so two students in the same class can be working at different phases, which parents are rarely told explicitly.

MYP Design

MYP 1-5

Inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, and evaluating. The process documentation carries more marks than the finished product, which surprises students every time and is the main reason good makers score moderately.

MYP Arts

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, developing skills, thinking creatively, and responding. As with design, the developmental workbook and the reflective responses carry substantial weight beside the final piece, and students who only produce work lose the criteria that reward process.

MYP Physical and Health Education

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, planning for performance, applying and performing, and reflecting and improving performance. Written and reflective components matter, which regularly startles families who assume the subject is assessed on sport alone.

Interdisciplinary units and ATL skills

MYP 1-5

Approaches to learning skills run across every subject: research, communication, self-management, thinking and social skills. Tutoring that targets self-management and research skills often raises grades across several subjects at once, which is unusual value.

The Personal Project

MYP 5

Assessed against published criteria covering planning, applying skills, reflecting and the product. Coaching covers goal scoping, criteria interpretation and process-journal discipline. The student sets the goal, does the work, keeps the journal and writes the report.

Diploma bridging in mathematics

MYP 5 into DP1

Indices, surds, algebraic fractions, rearranging with the unknown appearing twice, function notation and expanding without hesitation. The Diploma assumes all of it from the first week. Six to eight sessions over a summer removes most of the first-term shock.

Diploma bridging in writing

MYP 5 into DP1

Essay structure under timed conditions, command-term discipline, and building an argument with evidence rather than with assertion. The MYP gives time and process credit; the Diploma marks the product written in two hours, and that shift catches strong MYP writers.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of MYP tutoring, each aimed at a different thing a criterion breakdown can reveal, plus our position on in-home tuition.

Criterion-targeted weekly sessions

One 60-minute session a week aimed at the specific criterion the breakdown identifies as weak, rather than at the subject generally. A student weak on criterion B in science works on investigation design; a student weak on criterion C in mathematics works on notation and presentation. The content follows the school's units so nothing runs in parallel.

  • Targets one named criterion rather than a whole subject
  • Follows the school's own units and assessment tasks
  • Same tutor weekly so the diagnosis accumulates
  • Gulf Standard Time slots around the school run

Personal Project coaching block

Four to six sessions timed to the school's internal deadlines, starting with whether the goal is specific enough to assess and small enough to finish. The tutor questions the goal, explains the criteria, and reviews the student's process journal and report drafts. The student sets the goal, does the work, keeps the journal and writes every word.

  • Goal scoping tested against the criteria before work begins
  • Process-journal discipline established early rather than retrofitted
  • Feedback on the student's own drafts; no supplied text
  • Scheduled backwards from the school's deadline

Summer bridging into the Diploma

Six to eight sessions between MYP 5 and the first Diploma year on the specific things the Diploma assumes: algebraic automaticity, timed essay structure and command-term discipline. It is the cheapest high-value tutoring in the programme and almost nobody asks for it, because the subject it helps has not begun.

  • Defined skill list rather than an open revision course
  • Mathematics and writing covered separately
  • Timed conditions introduced deliberately
  • Finished before the first Diploma term starts

In-home MYP tutoring: the market and our position

Dubai has tutors who travel, at published in-home one-to-one rates of roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel per Bestimate's 2026 table and advertised home-tutor rates. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that service exists only in India. For the MYP the relevant scarcity is criterion literacy rather than subject knowledge.

  • No IB Gram tutor travels to an address in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE
  • Travel premium in this market is roughly AED 50-150 an hour
  • A nearby tutor may teach the content well and not know the criteria at all
  • Online matching lets us pick for criterion literacy, which is the narrower skill

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai International Academic City

01

The four criteria, subject by subject, and which one usually fails

Every MYP subject is assessed against four criteria, each marked out of eight, giving thirty-two raw marks per subject before conversion to the 1 to 8 grade. The criteria are published, they have strands with descriptors, and they are the same across every IB World School running the programme. A parent who knows the four names for their child's subject can read a report properly for the first time.

They are also predictable in where they fail. In the sciences, criterion A - knowing and understanding - is usually the strongest, because it is closest to conventional content teaching. Criteria B and C, inquiring and designing and processing and evaluating, are usually the weakest, because investigation design and data evaluation are skills most schemes of work assume rather than teach. The result is a student who knows the science and scores moderately.

In mathematics the weak criterion is almost always investigating patterns, which asks a student to find a rule, express it in correct general notation and justify it. Finding the rule is the part students can do. Expressing and justifying it is the part that scores, and it responds very quickly to teaching because the structure of a good answer is consistent.

The table below sets out the criteria for the subjects families in this cluster ask about most, with the criterion that usually costs marks and what the work on it actually looks like. Ask your school for the criterion-level breakdown and read it against this table; the two together usually make the next eight sessions obvious.

Reading a 1 to 8 grade without guessing

  • Four criteria, eight marks each, thirty-two raw marks per subject before conversion
  • Published boundaries convert criterion marks to the 1 to 8 grade
  • Ask how many times each criterion has been assessed when a mark surprises you
  • Most recent and most consistent evidence should outweigh one early poor task
  • MYP grades are not percentages, and a 5 is not half marks

Parents in this cluster routinely ask whether a 5 is good. The honest answer is that it depends entirely on which criteria produced it, and that is why the grade alone is close to useless for planning. Four marks out of eight across all four criteria and a pattern of 7, 7, 3, 2 can produce similar overall grades while describing entirely different students with entirely different needs.

The conversion from criterion marks to the final grade uses published boundaries, and schools apply them consistently. What varies is how many assessment tasks have contributed to each criterion by the time a report is written - some criteria may have been assessed once and others three times, which makes early-year reports noisier than later ones. Ask how many times each criterion has been assessed when a mark looks surprising.

The second thing worth asking is whether the mark reflects the most recent evidence or an average across the term. MYP practice generally favours the most recent and most consistent evidence over a simple mean, because the programme is trying to report what a student can do now. A single poor task early in a term should not still be dragging a criterion mark in May, and if it appears to be, that is a reasonable question for a parents' evening.

For families new to the programme, one reassurance and one warning. The reassurance: MYP grades are not percentages and a 5 is not 50 per cent of anything. The warning: a comfortable MYP profile does not guarantee a comfortable Diploma, because the Diploma assesses a product written under time pressure rather than a skill demonstrated over a unit. That gap is the subject of the bridging section further down.

03

Investigation design: the criterion that costs science marks

If a science report shows a strong criterion A and a weak criterion B, the work is investigation design, and it is some of the most satisfying tutoring in the programme because the improvement is fast and visible. Criterion B asks a student to formulate a testable research question, identify and explain the variables, design a method that controls what needs controlling, and justify the choices made.

Students fail it in consistent ways. The research question is not testable with the apparatus available. The independent and dependent variables are named and then the controlled variables are listed without any mention of how they will be held constant. The method has no range and interval justification, no repeats, or repeats with no stated reason. None of these is a content problem and all of them are correctable in a handful of sessions.

Criterion C, processing and evaluating, fails in a matching pattern. Data is presented without processing, or processed without uncertainty or spread, or graphed without a line of best fit. The evaluation section says that more repeats would have helped, which earns nothing, instead of identifying the largest source of error and proposing a specific change. Teaching that distinction once usually fixes it permanently.

This is also the clearest investment in Diploma readiness available in MYP 4 and 5. The Diploma's scientific investigation is assessed against research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, worth twenty-four marks in total, and it asks for precisely the skills criteria B and C are building. A student who has been taught investigation design properly in MYP 5 starts the Diploma investigation ahead.

04

The Personal Project, scoped properly

The Personal Project is the MYP's largest independent undertaking and the one most likely to go wrong in a way that is visible from the outside. It is assessed against published criteria covering planning, applying skills, reflecting and the product itself, with a process journal running throughout and a report at the end. It is also the clearest rehearsal available for the Diploma's Extended Essay.

Two failures dominate. The first is a goal too large and too vague: a student who intends to build an application, compose an album or run an event discovers in the final month that the product cannot be finished and the criteria cannot be evidenced. The remedy is a scoping conversation at the start, where the goal is tested against both assessability and the available weeks.

The second is a process journal written retrospectively. The journal is meant to be contemporaneous evidence of planning, decision-making and reflection, and a fortnight of reconstructed entries written the night before submission reads exactly like what it is. Establishing a weekly journal habit in the first month costs nothing and protects two criteria.

Our boundary here is the same as at Diploma level and worth stating plainly, because the search results this page sits in include operators who sell completed coursework. The student chooses the goal, does the work, keeps the journal and writes the report. A tutor interrogates the goal, explains what each criterion rewards, asks the questions a supervisor would ask, and comments on the student's own drafts. Nothing is supplied.

05

The MYP 5 to Diploma step, as a list rather than a warning

Every family in this cluster hears that the Diploma is a step up, and the statement is useless because it names nothing. The step is specific, and once it is listed it can be worked on over a summer. The MYP assesses skills against criteria with process credit and generous time; the Diploma assesses a product written in two hours against a mark scheme, which is a different activity using the same knowledge.

In mathematics the list is indices, surds, algebraic fractions, rearranging formulae with the unknown appearing twice, function notation and expanding and factorising without hesitation. The Diploma assumes all of these are automatic from the first week and then builds quickly on top of them. A student who can do them slowly will find the first Diploma term exhausting, regardless of a strong MYP 5 grade.

In writing subjects the list is essay structure under timed conditions, command-term discipline, and making an argument with evidence rather than assertion. MYP tasks reward drafting and reflection; a Diploma paper rewards a well-structured answer produced once, to time, answering precisely the command term printed on the page. Strong MYP writers are frequently caught by this, which surprises everyone including them.

In the sciences the list is the investigation skills of criteria B and C plus uncertainty handling, which the Diploma examines directly and the MYP mostly does not. Six to eight sessions across a summer covering the mathematics list and the writing list is the highest-value tutoring in this programme, and it is bought by almost nobody because the subject it helps has not started.

Mathematics route choice in MYP 4 and 5

Many MYP schools split mathematics into standard and extended routes in MYP 4, and the decision is usually made by the school at the end of MYP 3 on the basis of performance against criterion A and criterion B. It is a quiet decision with a long tail, because the extended route builds the algebraic fluency that Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level later assumes.

This is not a hard gate in the way an IGCSE tier is - a student on the standard route can still take Diploma mathematics - but the practical effect is real. The extended route spends more time on the manipulation that the Diploma treats as given, so a standard-route student aiming at Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level has more bridging to do in less time, usually in the same summer as everything else.

The question to ask the school, in MYP 3 or early MYP 4, is which route they intend, what evidence informed it, and what would change their view. Schools generally respond well to the question when it is specific. Where a move upwards is worth arguing for, the evidence is marked work at the extended route under timed conditions, and a targeted term of tutoring can produce it.

For families in this cluster the practical geography matters here too. Uptown International School in Mirdif and Universal American School in Al Warqa run the MYP, and both lead into Diploma provision - Uptown within the same school. If your child may want Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, ask the Diploma coordinator at the intended sixth form what MYP mathematics route and profile they expect, and ask while there is still time to act on the answer.

07

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies alongside the MYP

MYP students in Dubai also carry the mandatory UAE subjects, and this catches new arrivals in this cluster more than any other part of the timetable. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA's guidance states the requirements must be implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year.

The rules are specific. KHDA requires schools to organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and states that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arabs and for Arabic as a first language, with Arabic primary for Social Studies for Arab students and the school's licensed-curriculum language for non-Arabs.

Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided the weekly total is met, and KHDA advises that any mandatory-subject lesson should run at least 25 minutes. Schools must also ensure that teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold appropriate KHDA approval to teach those subjects, which is a concrete credential point a parent can ask about directly.

What constrains tutoring is a content rule: for these subjects, using any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is strictly prohibited. Support for Arabic as an additional language is ordinary language teaching and freely available, and in the MYP it maps onto language acquisition phases. Help with the mandatory Islamic Education and Social Studies content needs a conversation with the school about acceptable material first.

08

What MYP tutoring costs, and what we do not claim

Market rates in this emirate, each attributed to the provider publishing it and read in October 2026, with none of them an IB Gram rate. Budget and university-student online tutors advertise from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. For MYP content support that band genuinely contains usable help, which is less true at Diploma Higher Level. What it less often contains is criterion literacy.

Qualified subject tutors online sit at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. In-home one-to-one with travel runs AED 180 to 500, per Bestimate at 180 to 350 and independent home tutors at 200 to 500. Published monthly packages include AED 799 for eight online sessions, and Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly hour run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end and AED 600 to 1,200 mid-range.

For the MYP specifically, the sensible purchase is usually small and targeted: a term of criterion-focused sessions in one subject, or a summer bridging block, rather than an open weekly arrangement across several subjects. A tutor who cannot name the four criteria for your child's subject is selling general secondary tutoring, which may be fine and should be priced accordingly.

What we do not claim: no office, centre or branch anywhere in the UAE; no KHDA Educational Services Permit, which is issued to training institutes with premises; no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE or the IB; no guaranteed grades; and no star ratings we cannot evidence. On regulation, the MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and tutoring without it attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, with no fine schedule published.

Where we tutor

Where MYP families in this cluster live and go to school

Academic City itself has no MYP provision, so the geography of this programme in eastern Dubai is a commuting story.

Dubai International Academic City

A university free zone whose own secondary runs the British curriculum. MYP families here travel to Mirdif or Al Warqa, which makes a 5pm session the practical floor on weekdays.

Mirdif

Uptown International School runs the full IB continuum within the district, including the MYP, so Mirdif families have the shortest run in this cluster and the best continuity from PYP through to the Diploma.

Al Warqa

Universal American School carries IB programmes here. The district also has a large Indian-curriculum population, so MYP and CBSE families on the same street ask entirely different questions about reports and grades.

Dubai Silicon Oasis

Adjacent to Academic City and dense with apartments. Its schools are largely on the British and Indian curricula, so MYP students living here commute out, usually towards Mirdif.

International City

The clusters around Dragon Mart, with no international school in the district at all. The longest run of any neighbourhood here, which pushes weekday sessions towards six and makes weekend mornings the better slot.

Nad Al Hamar and Al Rashidiya

Fast access across Ras Al Khor Road to the Garhoud and Nad Al Sheba schools, several of which run MYP or the full continuum. A 5.30pm start is realistic from here.

Al Khawaneej and Al Mizhar

The far eastern edge with large plots and little IB provision inside either district. The neighbourhoods where the local pool of criterion-literate MYP tutors is thinnest.

Dubai Festival City and Al Garhoud

Across the creek road, with Deira International School running IB programmes in Garhoud. A common alternative catchment for Academic City families wanting IB continuity without the Nad Al Sheba drive.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Ask the school for the criterion breakdown

Not the report: the four criterion marks per subject. Most schools hold them and many will share them when asked directly. With those numbers a tutor can say in one session what the next eight should contain, and you can stop guessing what the overall grade means.

  2. 02

Name the subject and the weak criterion

A science student weak on criterion B needs investigation design; a mathematics student weak on investigating patterns needs generalisation and justification. Those are different tutors' sessions, and the breakdown makes the choice obvious instead of approximate.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson and a written note

A real lesson on the actual criterion in question, with the student working. Afterwards a plain written summary of what the tutor found and what a term would target. Say no and nothing further is owed.

  4. 04

Short, targeted blocks rather than open arrangements

A term on one criterion, a coaching block for the Personal Project, or a summer bridging block before the Diploma. The MYP rewards targeted work, and an open weekly arrangement across three subjects usually costs more and achieves less.

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We work from criteria, not from the overall grade

A grade 5 built on 7, 7, 3, 2 describes a completely different student from one built on four fives. The criterion breakdown is where the actionable information sits, and asking the school for it is the first thing we suggest.

Investigation design taught, not assumed

Criteria B and C in the sciences cost more marks than criterion A, because designing an investigation and evaluating data are skills most schemes of work assume. They are also the direct rehearsal for the Diploma's twenty-four-mark investigation.

The Diploma gap named as a list

Indices, surds, algebraic fractions, function notation, timed essay structure, command-term discipline. 'The Diploma is a step up' is not actionable; a list that can be worked through in six to eight summer sessions is.

Personal Project scoped before it is started

The two failures are a goal too large to finish and a process journal written retrospectively. Both are prevented in the first month and neither can be fixed in the last. We question the goal and the journal; the student does all the work.

Small targeted purchases over open arrangements

A term on one criterion usually achieves more than a year of general weekly support across three subjects, and costs considerably less. We would rather say that than sell the larger arrangement.

Rates attributed, claims limited

Every AED figure here names the provider who published it and the month it was read. We hold no regulator approval, have no UAE premises, publish no guaranteed grades, and do not supply IB material as downloads.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai International Academic City: your questions answered

Can I get an IB MYP tutor in Dubai International Academic City?+

Yes, as one-to-one online tuition rather than a tutor coming to your address, since IB Gram offers home visits only in India. Academic City itself has no MYP provision - its secondary runs the British curriculum - so families here already travel to Mirdif or Al Warqa for the programme. The relevant scarcity for MYP tutoring is not subject knowledge but criterion literacy: a tutor who cannot name the four criteria for your child's subject is offering general secondary tutoring.

What do the four MYP criteria mean on my child's report?+

Each MYP subject is assessed against four published criteria, each marked out of eight, and those four marks convert to the single grade from 1 to 8 using published boundaries. In the sciences they are knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. In mathematics they cover knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. The weak criterion, not the overall grade, tells you what to work on.

Is a grade 5 in the MYP a good result?+

It depends entirely on which criteria produced it, which is why the grade alone is close to useless for planning. A profile of 7, 7, 3, 2 and a flat profile of fives can produce similar overall grades while describing very different students with very different needs. Ask the school for the criterion-level breakdown, and ask how many times each criterion has been assessed, because early-year reports are noisier when some criteria have been assessed once and others three times.

Why does my son score well on content and badly overall in science?+

Almost certainly criteria B and C. Criterion A, knowing and understanding, is closest to conventional content teaching and is usually the strongest. Inquiring and designing asks him to formulate a testable question, identify variables and justify a method; processing and evaluating asks him to process data and evaluate method and reliability. Most schemes of work assume rather than teach those skills, so a student who knows the science scores moderately. Both respond quickly to targeted sessions.

Which MYP mathematics criterion do students lose most marks on?+

Investigating patterns, consistently. It asks a student to find a rule, express it in correct general notation and then justify it. Finding the rule is the part most students manage; expressing and justifying it is the part that scores, and it is rarely taught directly. The structure of a strong response is consistent enough that a handful of sessions produces a visible change in the criterion mark, which makes it one of the most efficient things to target in the whole programme.

How should the Personal Project goal be chosen?+

Small enough to finish and specific enough to assess, which rules out most first ideas. The two dominant failures in this cluster are a goal too large - an application, an album, an event - that cannot be completed or evidenced, and a process journal written retrospectively in the last fortnight. Both are prevented in the first month and neither can be fixed at the end. Test the goal against the published criteria and the available weeks before any work starts.

How far may a tutor go with a Personal Project draft and journal?+

Within a firm boundary. A tutor can interrogate the goal, explain what each criterion rewards, ask the questions a supervisor would ask, and read and comment on your child's own drafts and journal entries. A tutor cannot choose the goal, make the product, write journal entries or supply text for the report. The search results this page sits in include operators who sell completed coursework outright, and a malpractice finding from that falls on the student rather than the seller.

What exactly is the gap between MYP 5 and the Diploma?+

A list rather than a general standard. In mathematics: indices, surds, algebraic fractions, rearranging with the unknown appearing twice, function notation, and expanding without hesitation - all assumed automatic from the first Diploma week. In writing subjects: essay structure under timed conditions, command-term discipline, and argument built on specific evidence. In the sciences: investigation design and uncertainty handling. Six to eight sessions over a summer covers most of it.

My daughter has a strong MYP profile. Will the Diploma be fine?+

Not automatically, and this catches confident families. The MYP assesses skills against criteria with process credit and generous time; the Diploma assesses a product written in two hours against a mark scheme. Strong MYP writers in particular are caught by the shift, because drafting and reflection earn nothing in a timed paper. The content knowledge transfers; the working conditions do not. Timed practice in the summer before the first Diploma year is the cheapest insurance available.

Should my child take extended rather than standard MYP mathematics?+

If Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is a possibility later, it is worth asking about. The extended route spends more time on the manipulation the Diploma treats as given, so a standard-route student aiming at Higher Level has more bridging to do in less time. It is not a hard gate like an IGCSE tier. Ask the school in MYP 3 or early MYP 4 which route they intend and what evidence would change their view, because marked work at the extended route is what they respond to.

Does my child still take Arabic and Islamic Education in an MYP school?+

Yes. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with KHDA's guidance requiring implementation from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Schools must run separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, with combined classes strictly prohibited. Instructional time is calculated on 40-minute lesson units, with any mandatory-subject lesson advised to run at least 25 minutes.

Can we get help with Arabic as an additional language for the MYP?+

Yes, and it maps onto the language acquisition phases the MYP uses, which is worth knowing because students are assessed by phase rather than by year group. Two children in the same class can be working at different phases, and parents are rarely told so explicitly. Note the constraint on the mandatory subjects: for Islamic Education and Social Studies, using different or additional content without prior Ministry of Education permission is prohibited, so ask the school what material it will accept first.

How much should we expect to spend on MYP tutoring?+

Less than at Diploma level, and the sensible purchase is small and targeted. Market rates read in October 2026: budget and university-student online tutors from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik from 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from 33 to 52; qualified subject tutors online at AED 150 to 300. For MYP content the lower band genuinely contains usable help. What it less often contains is criterion literacy, which is the thing worth paying for in this programme.

What time can an MYP session start from Academic City on a weekday?+

Around 5pm, because Academic City has no MYP provision and children travel to Mirdif or Al Warqa. From Mirdif itself, where Uptown International School sits inside the district, 4.45pm works. From International City, where there is no international school at all, 6pm is the honest answer and a weekend morning is usually the better slot. Because no tutor is travelling, the only constraint is the school run, so book against the worst-case journey rather than the average one.

Is a permit required for someone tutoring MYP subjects privately in Dubai?+

Yes, and it applies regardless of the programme or the age of the student. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years, so it cannot legitimately be priced into a rate. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published. Ask the person teaching your child whether they hold a current permit.

Ask the school for the criterion marks first

If your child is in the Middle Years Programme and you live in Dubai International Academic City, Silicon Oasis, Mirdif, Al Warqa or International City, the most useful thing you can do before contacting any tutor is ask the school for the four criterion marks in the subject that worries you. With those numbers we can say in one session which criterion is costing the grade and what a term of work should contain - and often that the answer is a short targeted block rather than an open weekly arrangement. The trial lesson is free; lessons are one-to-one and online on Gulf Standard Time.
