IB Maths Tutor in Dubai International Academic City

An IB maths tutor in Dubai International Academic City is almost never asked for in the abstract. The request is Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, Higher or Standard, and usually after a test that went badly. This page separates the two courses properly, sets out the Internal Assessment criteria letter by letter, and compares Academic City with Silicon Oasis, Mirdif and International City. All lessons are one-to-one over live video.

  • Matched to AA or AI, Higher or Standard, before anything is booked
  • Internal Assessment coached against the published criteria, never written
  • Method marks taught explicitly, because that is where grades go
  • Free trial lesson with a written diagnosis afterwards

IB & IGCSE in Dubai International Academic City

Two different courses, four neighbourhoods, one tutoring problem

The first thing to establish is which mathematics your child is actually taking, because 'IB maths' describes two courses that share a name and very little else. Analysis and Approaches is the algebraic, proof-based route: calculus, functions, trigonometric identities, and at Higher Level proof by induction, complex numbers and vectors. Applications and Interpretation is the modelling and statistics route, built around technology use, regression, and interpreting results in context. They are examined separately and they suit different students.

Families in this cluster get this wrong more often than families in older Dubai neighbourhoods, for a practical reason. Dubai International Academic City is a university free zone; its own secondary, Dubai English Speaking College, runs the British route to A Level. The Diploma schools this cluster uses are elsewhere - GEMS Wellington Academy in Silicon Oasis, Uptown International School in Mirdif, Universal American School in Al Warqa, GEMS Modern Academy and North London Collegiate School Dubai in Nad Al Sheba - and course availability varies between them.

So a parent in Academic City comparing notes with a neighbour in Silicon Oasis may be discussing two different qualifications. One child is doing AA HL at one school; the other is doing AI SL at another; the tutoring each needs has almost nothing in common. Before booking anything, get the course name, the level and the school from the Diploma coordinator, in writing. It takes one email and it prevents a term of mismatched teaching.

The second thing to establish is where the marks are going. In both courses the commonest loss is not conceptual. It is method: answers presented without working, so that a correct final number earns a fraction of the available marks; rounding applied too early in a multi-step problem, so accuracy marks fall away through the rest of it; and calculator methods used where the question demanded an analytic one. These are habits, and habits are faster to change than understanding is to build.

The third is the Internal Assessment, the mathematical exploration, worth 20 marks against five published criteria. Almost no competitor page in this market names a single criterion, which is strange, because knowing that personal engagement carries three marks and use of mathematics carries six tells a student exactly where to spend their effort. The criteria table further down this page is the most immediately useful thing on it.

IB Gram delivers all of this online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time. We do not send tutors to homes in the UAE - home visits are an India-only service. For mathematics specifically that matters, because the pool of people within a twenty-minute drive of Academic City who teach AA HL is very small, and the pool who can coach an exploration against criterion E is smaller still.

Mathematics tutoring requests from this cluster arrive at four distinct points, and the right work is different at each one.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

MYP mathematics, standard and extended

Graded 1-8 against four criteria: knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Many schools split into standard and extended mathematics in MYP 4 and 5, and that split influences which Diploma course a student is steered towards. Marks are lost on investigating patterns, because generalising and justifying a rule is a skill nobody teaches directly.

In this cluster the MYP runs at Uptown International School in Mirdif and Universal American School in Al Warqa. If your child is in MYP 4 or 5 and may want Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, the extended route matters: AA HL assumes algebraic fluency that standard MYP mathematics does not build to the same depth. Ask the school which route they intend and why.

AASLAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Analysis and Approaches, Standard Level

Algebra, functions, trigonometry, calculus and statistics, assessed across two papers plus the exploration. It is a demanding course for a student who was comfortable rather than strong in MYP mathematics, principally because it moves quickly and assumes prior fluency. Students who relied on a calculator through MYP meet the limits of that approach in the first term.

AA SL is the most commonly requested tutoring combination from families in Academic City, Silicon Oasis and Mirdif, and the usual presenting problem is identical: the content is understood in the lesson and collapses in the test. That is a method and timing problem rather than a comprehension problem, and it is diagnosable from one marked paper.

AAHLAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Analysis and Approaches, Higher Level

The most demanding mathematics in the Diploma: everything in SL plus proof by induction, complex numbers, vectors, and substantially heavier calculus including further integration techniques. Three papers rather than two, and a grade distribution that reflects a self-selecting cohort. It is the usual requirement for engineering, mathematics, physics and many economics degrees.

This is the hardest combination to staff locally in the eastern suburbs, and the one where online matching makes the clearest difference. A family in Al Khawaneej or International City looking for an AA HL specialist within driving distance is usually looking at an empty list. We also say plainly when an AA HL slot is not available at short notice rather than offering a Standard Level tutor for it.

AIAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Applications and Interpretation, SL and HL

Modelling, statistics, probability and technology use, with HL adding matrices, graph theory, vectors and more demanding statistical inference. The content is not easier than AA, it is different: less algebraic manipulation, far more interpretation. The characteristic failure is a student who computes a regression line correctly and then says nothing about what the gradient means.

AI is growing in Dubai schools and is often the better fit for students heading towards business, social sciences, design or medicine-adjacent routes. The caution is university prerequisites: some courses specify AA, and a few specify AA at Higher Level. Check the target universities' published requirements before DP1 rather than in DP2, because the switch between courses is difficult once teaching has begun.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Mathematics tutoring is topic work, not subject work. These are the areas families in this cluster ask about, with what each actually demands.

Algebraic fluency and manipulation

AA SL and HL

The foundation everything else rests on: indices, surds, algebraic fractions, rearranging, and factorising without hesitation. A student who can do these slowly cannot do the rest of the course at all, because the algebra is the step inside a longer problem rather than the problem itself.

Functions and transformations

AA and AI, both levels

Domain and range, composite and inverse functions, and the effect of each transformation on a graph. Marks go missing when students memorise transformation rules rather than understanding them, because examination questions combine two or three transformations at once.

Differential calculus

AA SL and HL

Chain, product and quotient rules, optimisation and kinematics. HL extends to implicit differentiation and related rates. The recurring loss is in optimisation problems where the student differentiates correctly and never justifies that the stationary point is a maximum.

Integral calculus

AA SL and HL

Definite and indefinite integration, areas and volumes of revolution. HL adds substitution, integration by parts and partial fractions. Students lose marks on limits, on forgetting the constant, and on setting up the integral with the wrong variable of integration.

Proof, including induction

AA HL

Direct proof, contradiction, counterexample and proof by mathematical induction. Induction is heavily examined and heavily botched: the inductive step is often asserted rather than derived, and the conclusion is omitted. It is formulaic enough to be taught reliably in a handful of sessions.

Complex numbers and vectors

AA HL

Cartesian, polar and exponential forms, De Moivre's theorem, and vector geometry including lines and planes. Marks go on argument conventions and on diagrams that are not drawn. Vector questions in particular reward sketching before calculating, which almost no student does unprompted.

Statistics, probability and distributions

AA and AI, both levels

Discrete and continuous distributions, the binomial and normal, correlation and regression. In AI this is the heart of the course. The common loss is in conditional probability and in stating conclusions without reference to the context the question established.

Modelling and interpretation

AI SL and HL

Choosing a model, fitting it, and saying what it means. The computation is rarely the problem; the interpretation is. A student who writes the gradient of a regression line without a sentence on what it represents in the context of the data has lost the marks that distinguish the top bands.

Matrices and graph theory

AI HL

Matrix operations, eigenvalues, transition matrices, and graph theory including minimum spanning trees and Chinese postman problems. Unfamiliar to most parents and highly teachable, because the question types repeat with great regularity across sessions.

Mathematics Internal Assessment, the exploration

AA and AI, both levels

An individual exploration of 12 to 20 pages, worth 20 marks against five criteria. Coaching covers topic viability, structure, mathematical communication and the reflection the criteria reward. The student chooses the topic, does the mathematics and writes every word.

MYP to Diploma mathematics bridge

MYP 5 into DP1

A short programme on exactly what the Diploma assumes from day one: indices, surds, algebraic fractions, function notation and basic differentiation. Six to eight sessions in the summer before DP1 removes most of the first-term shock, and it is the cheapest useful mathematics tutoring a family in this cluster can buy.

Graphic display calculator technique

AA and AI, both levels

Knowing which paper permits the calculator and what it is for. In AI it is central; in AA it is a tool that must not replace analytic method. Specific skills - solving numerically, finding intersections, working with distributions, storing values to avoid rounding error - are worth marks and take two sessions to teach.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Mathematics tutoring works in three shapes, and the wrong shape wastes money regardless of how good the tutor is.

Weekly one-to-one, following the school's scheme of work

One 60-minute session a week, sitting a step behind the class so the tutoring consolidates what was just taught rather than running a parallel syllabus. The tutor works from the student's own marked exercises, which is how a method habit gets caught before it becomes automatic. Two sessions a week in the second Diploma year for Higher Level students is common.

  • Keyed to AA or AI at the correct level, confirmed before booking
  • Driven by the student's marked class work each week
  • Method marks taught explicitly, not assumed
  • Gulf Standard Time slots around the school run

Exploration coaching for the Internal Assessment

A finite block timed to the school's internal deadline. The tutor tests whether the chosen topic contains enough mathematics at the right level, questions the structure, explains what each criterion rewards, and comments on the student's own drafts. The student chooses the topic, does the mathematics and writes the exploration. That line does not move under deadline pressure.

  • Topic viability checked against criterion E before work begins
  • Criteria explained letter by letter with their mark allocations
  • Feedback on the student's drafts, never supplied text or mathematics
  • Usually four to six sessions across a term

Paper technique intensive before the May session

Timed paper work with mark-scheme walkthroughs, concentrated on the two or three question types the student keeps losing marks on. In mathematics this reliably recovers marks, because so much of the loss is method rather than understanding. Availability in the final weeks is the tightest of the year, which is an argument for booking in the first term.

  • Timed papers at the correct level, marked properly
  • Working-shown discipline and rounding control drilled deliberately
  • Calculator-paper and analytic-paper technique separated
  • An honest statement of what the remaining weeks can achieve

In-home mathematics tutoring in this market

Dubai does have mathematics tutors who travel, at published in-home rates of roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel according to Bestimate's 2026 table and advertised home-tutor rates. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that service exists only in India. For Higher Level Analysis and Approaches the travelling pool in the eastern suburbs is extremely thin.

  • No IB Gram tutor travels to an address in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE
  • Travel premium in this market is roughly AED 50-150 an hour
  • A nearby tutor may teach AI SL competently and AA HL not at all
  • Online matching is by course and level, which is the variable that matters

Analysis and Approaches against Applications and Interpretation

This is the decision that shapes two years of mathematics and it is frequently made on a sentence at a parents' evening. The two courses are not a harder and an easier version of the same thing. Analysis and Approaches is algebraic and proof-led; Applications and Interpretation is model-led and statistical. A student who finds algebraic manipulation painful but reads data well is genuinely better served by AI, and will score higher there.

The constraint is university entry. Some courses specify Analysis and Approaches, and a number of engineering, mathematics and physics programmes specify it at Higher Level. Others accept either. The only reliable way to settle it is to read the published entry requirements for the specific universities and courses your child is considering, including the UAE institutions, and to do that in the first Diploma year rather than the second, because switching after teaching has started is difficult.

The second constraint is school provision. Not every Diploma school in this part of Dubai offers both courses at both levels in every cohort, and timetable blocking can rule a combination out even when the course exists. Ask the Diploma coordinator which of the four combinations will actually run for your child's year group before building a plan on one of them.

For tutoring the practical point is that AA and AI tutors are not interchangeable. Somebody strong on calculus and proof may be weak on statistical inference and graph theory, and the reverse is equally true. We match on the course and level, which is why the first question we ask is which of the four your child is in.

The Internal Assessment criteria, letter by letter

The mathematical exploration is worth 20 marks, assessed against five criteria, and almost no page competing for this search names a single one of them. That omission is expensive for students, because the mark allocations tell you precisely where effort pays. Criterion E, use of mathematics, carries six marks - more than any other - and it is the criterion most often undermined by a topic that simply does not contain enough mathematics at the right level.

So the topic decision is the single highest-leverage moment in the whole exploration, and it happens before any writing. A topic that reduces to arithmetic and a graph cannot score well on criterion E no matter how neatly it is presented. A topic that requires mathematics commensurate with the course, used correctly and with understanding shown, can. Testing a proposed topic against criterion E before the student commits is the main thing a tutor is for here.

The other criteria reward things students systematically neglect. Personal engagement is three marks for genuine involvement with the material rather than a sentence saying the student finds the topic interesting. Reflection is three marks for considering the significance and limitations of the results, which is usually squeezed into a final paragraph when it should run through the work. Mathematical communication is four marks for notation, terminology and consistent use of symbols.

On process, this is coaching rather than production. We question the topic, explain the criteria, and comment on the student's own drafts. We do not supply mathematics, write sections or choose topics. One operator in these search results sells completed Internal Assessments at a published price; a malpractice finding from that falls on the candidate, not the seller.

MATHEMATICS EXPLORATION CRITERIA AND MARKS, 20 TOTAL

A: PresentationOrganisation, coherence and conciseness4A rambling structure with no clear aim stated at the outset
B: Mathematical communicationNotation, terminology, symbols, graphs and tables4Inconsistent symbols; unlabelled graphs; undefined variables
C: Personal engagementGenuine involvement with the mathematics3A declaration of interest instead of evidence of involvement
D: ReflectionCritical reflection on results, significance and limitations3One paragraph at the end rather than reflection throughout
E: Use of mathematicsMathematics commensurate with the course, correct and understood6A topic too thin to carry the level; errors left unexamined
03

Where mathematics marks actually go, by habit rather than by topic

  • Working omitted converts a correct answer into one mark out of four
  • Early rounding destroys accuracy marks through the rest of a question
  • Stationary points found but never classified as maximum or minimum
  • Vector questions attempted without a sketch
  • Regression computed in AI with no sentence on what the gradient means

Marking a Diploma mathematics paper properly produces a short and repetitive list. Working not shown, so a correct final answer scores one mark out of four. Rounding applied at an intermediate step, so every subsequent accuracy mark falls. A calculator used on a paper that required an analytic method. A stationary point found and never classified. A vector question attempted without a sketch. An optimisation answer given without units or context.

None of those is a failure of understanding and all of them are expensive. That is the good news, because habits change faster than comprehension grows. A student who loses eight marks a paper to method can usually recover most of them in six to eight sessions of deliberate practice, which is a far better return than the same hours spent re-explaining differentiation.

The way to find your own child's list is to have one timed paper marked properly against the published mark scheme, question by question, with the reason for each lost mark written down. Most students have three or four recurring reasons rather than twenty. That list becomes the lesson plan, and the student keeps it as an error log that gets checked for recurrence each session.

The topic-level gaps are real too and they are usually narrower than they feel. In Analysis and Approaches the recurring weak areas are integration technique, proof by induction and vector geometry. In Applications and Interpretation they are conditional probability, statistical inference and the interpretation sentences the mark scheme asks for. Those are nameable and schedulable, which is the opposite of 'my child is bad at maths'.

04

Academic City, Silicon Oasis, Mirdif, International City: what actually differs

Families in this cluster compare neighbourhoods constantly, so here is the comparison done properly for a mathematics student. What differs between the four is the school run, the time a session can start, and which Diploma courses the local school actually runs. What does not differ is the supply of Higher Level mathematics specialists, because that is set across the emirate rather than district by district.

Mirdif and Silicon Oasis have Diploma schools inside the district, so a 4.45pm session is realistic and a student can sustain two a week in the second year. Academic City's own secondary is on the British route, so Diploma families travel and 5pm is the practical floor. International City has no international school at all within the district, which pushes weekday sessions past six and makes the weekend morning the slot where serious paper practice happens.

The column that matters is the last one. In none of these four neighbourhoods is there a usable local choice of Analysis and Approaches Higher Level tutors. A family in Mirdif has a marginally better chance than a family in Al Khawaneej, and neither has a shortlist. Removing travel from the equation gives all four the same pool, which is larger than any of them had alone - and that, rather than convenience, is the argument for online delivery in this district.

One practical consequence of the timings in the table: book the slot against the worst-case journey rather than the average one. A session set for 4.30pm from a Nad Al Sheba school becomes a 4.50pm start twice a week, and in mathematics the lost ten minutes are usually the ones where last week's error log would have been reviewed.

The MYP mathematics to Diploma step, and how to close it cheaply

The most predictable mathematics problem in this cluster is the transition from MYP 5 into the first Diploma year. MYP mathematics is graded 1-8 against criteria that reward investigation and communication; Diploma mathematics assumes algebraic operations are automatic and then builds quickly on top of them. A student can hold a strong MYP grade and still be slow at the operations the Diploma treats as given.

The gap is specific rather than general, which is what makes it cheap to close. Indices and surds. Algebraic fractions. Rearranging formulae with the unknown in more than one place. Function notation and composite functions. Expanding and factorising without pausing. Basic differentiation, for students heading to Analysis and Approaches. That is a list, not a syllabus, and six to eight sessions over a summer covers it.

Families who do this in the summer between MYP 5 and DP1 report a quieter first term and buy fewer hours in total across the two years. Families who wait until the first Diploma report card are buying the same sessions in competition with new content arriving weekly, which is harder and takes longer. The MYP-to-Diploma bridge is the single best-value mathematics tutoring available to a student in this cluster.

One further note for Al Warqa and International City families specifically, where many students arrive from Indian-curriculum schools. The shift there is different again: CBSE mathematics builds strong procedural fluency and less interpretive writing, so the transition issue is usually the modelling and communication demands of MYP criteria and of Applications and Interpretation, rather than the algebra.

06

What mathematics tutoring costs in this market

Lead with what a parent can verify rather than with a price. Every figure below was published by the provider named and read in October 2026, and none of them is an IB Gram rate. Three of the six leading pages in this market publish no price at all, and two quote United States dollars, which is not a currency UAE families transact in.

Budget and university-student online tutors advertise from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. Qualified subject tutors online sit at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200 and IGCSE from AED 150. IB and IGCSE specialists run AED 200 to 450 or more, with TutorChase quoting AED 270. Premium named or examiner-led tutors reach AED 500 to 650 and above, with BartyED at AED 650. In-home one-to-one including travel runs AED 180 to 500.

Monthly, which is how families actually budget: published packages include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-range, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support.

For Higher Level Analysis and Approaches specifically, the honest market observation is that the budget band rarely contains anybody who can teach it. A tutor at AED 60 an hour is almost certainly not an AA HL specialist, and paying AED 300 for a generalist is worse value than paying AED 250 for somebody who teaches the course. For our own rates, the free trial lesson comes first and the figure is quoted against your child's actual course and level.

07

The Diploma mathematics year, counted backwards

UAE schools sit the May examination session, and for mathematics the internal calendar matters as much as the external one. The exploration has a school deadline, usually in the second half of the first Diploma year or early in the second, and it competes directly with mock examinations and with the Extended Essay in a crowded January and February window.

Counting backwards from that window changes the plan. Exploration topic chosen and tested against criterion E by the end of the first year. Mathematics drafted while there is still slack in the timetable, not alongside mock revision. Timed paper practice begun in the first term of the second year rather than saved for after the mocks, which is the commonest planning error in Diploma mathematics.

We publish no specific IB session or results dates on this site. The IB's own site blocks automated checking, and a wrong date on a page a family plans around is worse than no date at all, so confirm every IB date with your child's Diploma coordinator or on ibo.org. For Cambridge and Pearson qualifications the dates are sourced: Cambridge runs June and November series for UAE candidates, the February and March series being offered to India only, and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May and June and in November.

Ramadan sits inside the revision period in most years. School days shorten, late-afternoon concentration is poor, and a mathematics session booked for 4pm during the month is usually wasted. Weekend mornings and post-Iftar slots work better. Because no tutor is travelling, changing the pattern is a scheduling decision rather than a logistical one, and it is worth fixing before the month begins.

08

Finding somebody who actually teaches your child's course

Matching for mathematics is narrower than for most subjects. You are not looking for a maths tutor; you are looking for somebody who teaches Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, or Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level, routinely enough to know which question types appear where and what the mark scheme credits. In the eastern suburbs of Dubai, the number of such people within driving distance of Academic City is not a shortlist.

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so disregard any figure quoted at you. Ask the person teaching your child whether they hold a current permit, and ask to see it.

There is one arrangement to decline. The permit carries a code of conduct that bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school, and in Abu Dhabi ADEK's professional-ethics rules prohibit private and charter school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school. If somebody offers you your child's own mathematics teacher privately, that is a problem for the teacher and potentially for your child.

And where we cannot staff a combination properly - Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level at short notice in the weeks before mocks is the recurring case - we say so, give a realistic wait, and let you look elsewhere. We also state what we are not: no UAE office or centre, no KHDA Educational Services Permit, and no approval, accreditation or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson.

Where we tutor

Academic City compared with the neighbourhoods around it

Families here invariably compare notes with the next district over, so here is what changes between them for a Diploma mathematics student and what does not.

Dubai International Academic City

A university free zone off Al Ain Road whose own secondary runs the British route. Diploma mathematics students here travel out, most often to Silicon Oasis, and compare their options against Mirdif constantly.

Dubai Silicon Oasis

Adjacent, with GEMS Wellington Academy inside the district. The shortest school run in this cluster, so a 4.45pm mathematics session is realistic - which matters when a student needs two a week in the second Diploma year.

Mirdif

Uptown International School runs the full IB continuum within the district, so Mirdif families see both MYP and Diploma mathematics in the same school. The local tutor pool is the deepest in this cluster and still thin at Higher Level.

Al Warqa

Universal American School carries IB programmes here alongside a large Indian-curriculum population. Students moving from CBSE mathematics into the MYP or Diploma face a specific algebra-to-interpretation shift that is worth naming early.

International City

The clusters around Dragon Mart, with no international school in the district. The longest run of the four, so weekday sessions start late and the weekend morning becomes the slot where real mathematics gets done.

Nad Al Hamar and Ras Al Khor

Quick access across Ras Al Khor Road to the Nad Al Sheba schools, where GEMS Modern Academy and North London Collegiate School Dubai both run the Diploma. A 5.30pm start is realistic from here.

Al Khawaneej and Al Mizhar

The eastern edge, where Diploma provision is thinnest and where almost nobody teaching Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level lives within range. The neighbourhood where online delivery changes the available choice most.

Dubai Festival City and Al Garhoud

Across the creek road, with Deira International School running the Diploma in Garhoud. A workable alternative catchment for Academic City families who want IB without the Nad Al Sheba drive.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the course, the level and the school

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, Higher or Standard, which school, and what the last marked assessment came back as. Get it from the Diploma coordinator in writing if you are unsure, because the four combinations need four different tutors.

  2. 02

One marked paper as the diagnosis

Before planning anything, the tutor has the student sit a timed paper at the correct level and marks it against the published mark scheme, writing down the reason for every lost mark. That produces three or four recurring reasons, which becomes the plan for the first six sessions.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson and a written note

A real lesson on real mathematics, with the student working and the tutor diagnosing. Afterwards a plain written summary: the error habits found, the topic gaps, and what eight weeks would target. Say no and nothing further is owed.

Weekly rhythm with an error log

One session a week in the first Diploma year, often two in the second for Higher Level. The student keeps the error log and it is checked for recurrence every session. Short written reviews every few weeks on what has moved and what has not.

  5. 05

Exploration block timed to the school deadline

Four to six sessions when the Internal Assessment is live, starting with whether the chosen topic can carry criterion E at all. The student chooses, calculates and writes; the tutor questions and gives feedback on drafts. That boundary holds regardless of the deadline.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to one of four combinations, not to 'IB maths'

Analysis and Approaches HL and Applications and Interpretation SL are different qualifications needing different tutors. Strength in calculus and proof does not imply strength in statistical inference and graph theory. We ask which course before we match, every time.

Method marks taught as a subject in their own right

Working shown, rounding controlled, stationary points classified, vectors sketched, interpretation sentences written. Most mathematics mark loss at Diploma level is habit rather than understanding, and habits move faster than comprehension does.

The exploration criteria named, with their marks

Presentation 4, mathematical communication 4, personal engagement 3, reflection 3, use of mathematics 6. No competitor page in this market names a single criterion. Knowing the allocation tells a student exactly where the effort belongs.

The transition nobody budgets for

Six to eight sessions in the summer between MYP 5 and the first Diploma year, on indices, surds, algebraic fractions, function notation and basic differentiation. It is the cheapest useful mathematics tutoring available in this cluster and almost nobody buys it.

Rates published and attributed

Every AED figure on this page names the provider who published it and the month it was read. Three of the six leading pages in this market publish no price at all and two quote dollars, which is not the currency UAE families pay in.

We say when we cannot help

Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level at short notice before mocks is the combination we most often cannot staff well. You hear that at the enquiry stage with a realistic wait, rather than meeting a generalist at specialist rates in session three.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai International Academic City: your questions answered

Can I get an IB maths tutor in Dubai International Academic City?+

Yes, as one-to-one online tuition rather than a tutor arriving at your address. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home tutoring is an India-only service for us. For Diploma mathematics the online route has a concrete advantage here beyond convenience: the pool of people within driving distance of Academic City who teach Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is effectively empty, and matching online replaces proximity with the thing that actually decides the grade.

What is the difference between IB Maths AA and AI?+

Analysis and Approaches is the algebraic and proof-led course: functions, trigonometry, calculus, and at Higher Level proof by induction, complex numbers and vectors. Applications and Interpretation is modelling and statistics, built around technology use, regression and interpreting results in context, with matrices and graph theory at Higher Level. Neither is the easy version. The decision should rest on how your child thinks and on the published entry requirements for the courses they want, since some degrees specify AA and a few specify it at Higher Level.

How many marks is the IB Maths exploration worth and how is it split?+

Twenty marks across five criteria. Criterion A, presentation, carries four. Criterion B, mathematical communication, carries four. Criterion C, personal engagement, carries three. Criterion D, reflection, carries three. Criterion E, use of mathematics, carries six and is the largest single allocation. That split is why the topic choice matters more than the writing: a topic that does not contain mathematics commensurate with the course cannot score well on criterion E however neatly it is presented.

Can a tutor help with my daughter's maths exploration without breaking the rules?+

Within a clear boundary, yes. A tutor can test whether her proposed topic contains enough mathematics at her level, explain what each of the five criteria rewards, question her structure, and read her own drafts and comment on them. A tutor cannot choose her topic, do the mathematics, write sections, or supply text or working that ends up in the submission. The test is whether she could explain, without notes, why every line says what it says. A malpractice finding falls on the candidate.

My son understands maths in lessons but collapses in tests. What is going on?+

Almost always method and timing rather than comprehension, and it is the most common presenting problem from this cluster. The specific habits are working omitted so a correct answer scores one mark out of four, rounding applied at an intermediate step so later accuracy marks fall away, stationary points found but never classified, and the final long question abandoned rather than attempted partially. One timed paper marked properly against the published mark scheme will name his three or four recurring reasons.

Will AI Higher Level be accepted for an engineering degree application?+

Read the published entry requirements for the specific institutions and courses rather than relying on a general answer, because they differ and they change. The pattern across engineering, mathematics and physics programmes internationally is a preference or requirement for Analysis and Approaches, often at Higher Level, while Applications and Interpretation is accepted widely but can be insufficient for mathematical degrees. Check this during the first Diploma year, because switching course after teaching has begun is difficult and sometimes impossible on the timetable.

Is Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level realistic for an average MYP mathematician?+

It depends on fluency rather than on grade. AA HL assumes algebraic operations are automatic and builds quickly on top of them, so a student who can factorise and rearrange accurately but slowly will find the first term very hard, regardless of a solid MYP 5 result. The honest test is two marked Higher Level past-paper questions early on. A short bridging block over the summer on indices, surds, algebraic fractions and function notation changes the answer for a lot of students.

Does my child need a tutor for the graphic display calculator?+

Often two sessions rather than a course. The useful skills are knowing which paper permits the calculator and what it is legitimately for, solving numerically, finding intersections, working with distributions, and storing intermediate values to avoid rounding error. In Applications and Interpretation the calculator is central to the course; in Analysis and Approaches it is a tool that must not replace analytic method, and students who lean on it lose marks on exactly the questions designed to test the method.

How much does IB maths tutoring cost around Academic City?+

Market rates read in October 2026, attributed to whoever published them: qualified subject tutors online sit at AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. IB specialists run AED 200 to 450 or more, with TutorChase at AED 270. Premium named tutors reach AED 500 to 650, with BartyED at AED 650. In-home one-to-one with travel runs AED 180 to 500. For Higher Level work the budget band under AED 100 rarely contains anybody who teaches the course.

Is Mirdif or Silicon Oasis better for finding a Diploma maths tutor?+

Marginally Mirdif, because Uptown International School runs the full IB continuum inside the district and the school run is short enough for a 4.45pm session. But the difference is logistical. Neither neighbourhood contains a usable local choice of Analysis and Approaches Higher Level specialists, because that supply is set across the emirate rather than district by district. Once lessons are online, Mirdif, Silicon Oasis, Academic City and International City all draw from the same pool, which is larger than any of them had locally.

How many sessions a week does a Higher Level maths student need?+

One a week through the first Diploma year is the usual starting point, moving to two in the second year for Higher Level students, particularly through the mock period and the exploration deadline. Two sessions a week is a real commitment from International City, where weekday starts slip towards six; one weekday evening plus a weekend morning usually works better there. The weekend slot is also where a full timed paper can actually be sat, which cannot be done properly at seven in the evening.

Can one tutor take both maths and physics for a Diploma student?+

Sometimes, and it is worth asking rather than assuming, because the overlap in calculus and mechanics makes the combination efficient when it works. Where we would not combine is Higher Level in both, or where the tutor's depth is clearly in one and nominal in the other. Ask for the specific cohorts they have taught in each: a tutor who can walk a student through a Higher Level mark scheme in both subjects, question by question, is the real thing and will not mind proving it.

When should the exploration be finished to avoid the February crush?+

Topic chosen and tested against criterion E by the end of the first Diploma year, and the mathematics drafted before mock preparation begins. In most schools here the exploration deadline, the Extended Essay submission, the Theory of Knowledge essay and the mocks collide in a few weeks in January and February, and the exploration is the piece that gets sacrificed because it feels furthest from the examination. It is worth twenty marks in a subject, which is not a small thing to sacrifice.

Is a maths tutor working in Academic City required to hold a permit?+

Yes. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years, so no tutor can price it into a rate. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so treat any amount quoted at you as unverified. Ask the person teaching your child whether they hold a current permit and ask to see it.

What if my child's exact maths combination is not available?+

You hear it at the enquiry stage. Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level in the weeks before mock examinations is the combination we most often cannot staff well, because every Diploma family in the emirate wants the same specialists in the same fortnight. In that case we give a realistic wait, or we say no. What we will not do is assign a Standard Level tutor to a Higher Level student and let a pleasant trial lesson sell the arrangement for us.

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, Higher or Standard, which school, and what the last marked assessment said. With those four facts we can tell you honestly whether a specialist in that exact combination is free, what one timed paper is likely to reveal, and whether the exploration needs attention before anything else. The trial lesson is free, it is a real lesson rather than a sales call, and you get a written note of what the tutor found. Lessons are one-to-one and online, on Gulf Standard Time, from Academic City to International City alike.
