IB & IGCSE in Dubai International Academic City

Three routes wearing one name, and what each one closes

'IGCSE science' describes at least three different things and the difference matters more than almost anything else a tutor will tell you. Three separate sciences means biology, chemistry and physics taken as individual subjects with individual grades. A double award - Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 or Pearson Science Double Award 4SC1 - compresses all three into the equivalent of two subjects with two identical grades. A single combined science, such as Cambridge 0653, compresses them into one.

The consequence appears at sixth form rather than at sixteen. A student with three separate science grades can usually take any of the three at A Level or at Diploma Higher Level. A double-award student can often continue one or two sciences, depending on the school's entry rules. A combined-science student frequently cannot continue any science at the higher levels, and nobody mentions this when the option form is signed in Year 9.

In this cluster the routes vary by school. Dubai International Academic City is a university free zone whose own secondary, Dubai English Speaking College, runs the British route through IGCSE to A Level. Across the junction in Silicon Oasis, in Mirdif, Al Warqa and Al Qusais, schools make their own decisions about which routes they offer and which students they place on each. The same child could be entered differently at two schools a few kilometres apart.

The second thing to settle is how practical work is assessed, because it differs by board and by school choice. Cambridge sciences offer either a practical examination or the alternative-to-practical paper, and the school decides. Pearson's 4BI1, 4CH1, 4PH1 and 4SC1 have no practical examination and assess experimental skills inside the written papers instead. A student revising apparatus technique for a paper that does not test it directly has misallocated weeks.

The third is that science marks are lost in predictable places that are not content. Command terms, where 'describe' and 'explain' carry different mark allocations and students answer both the same way. Units omitted. Graph work where the axes are read wrongly before any thinking happens. Specific practical vocabulary - separation techniques, gas tests - where a vague answer earns nothing even when the science is understood.

There is also a cost argument specific to this route question. A triple-science family often buys three tutors when one timed paper in each subject would show that a single science is carrying the entire problem. Chemistry is the usual culprit in this cluster, generally because of mole calculations at the higher tiers, but the papers should decide rather than the pattern. One diagnostic session ahead of any booking routinely cuts the monthly commitment by two thirds.

IB Gram delivers this online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time. We do not send tutors to homes in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service. Apparatus handling happens in the school laboratory under any arrangement, and the marks in the written practical components sit in skills that are taught better on a shared screen with real data than standing beside a clamp stand.

At a glance

  • Three routes: separate sciences, double award such as Cambridge 0654 or Pearson 4SC1, and single combined science such as Cambridge 0653
  • The route chosen in Year 9 can close A Level and Diploma Higher Level sciences two years later
  • Cambridge sciences offer a practical paper or the alternative-to-practical; the school chooses
  • Pearson 4BI1, 4CH1, 4PH1 and 4SC1 have no practical examination at all
  • UAE candidates sit Cambridge in June and November; the February and March series is India-only
  • Lessons are one-to-one and online; no tutor travels to a UAE address

Four positions families in this cluster write to us from, each needing something different.

KS3Ages 11-14

Key Stage 3 science, Years 7 to 9

Not externally examined, so weakness is invisible until the IGCSE course begins. The gaps that cause trouble later are numerical rather than conceptual: rearranging formulae, handling units and prefixes, reading a scale precisely, and plotting a graph with a sensible scale. Science then assumes all four from the first week of Year 10.

The Year 9 option conversation is the one that matters most in this cluster, because it decides the route. Ask which science route the school intends for your child, what grade range that route makes available, and specifically whether it permits continuation to A Level or Diploma sciences at the school's own sixth form. Get the answer before the form is signed.

TRIPLEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Three separate sciences

Biology, chemistry and physics as individual subjects, each with its own papers and grade. The heaviest content load of the three routes and the one that keeps every onward option open. Students on this route who struggle usually struggle in one of the three rather than across all, which makes targeted tutoring unusually efficient.

Families in Academic City and Silicon Oasis on this route often ask for 'a science tutor' when what they need is a chemistry tutor, because chemistry is carrying the problem. One diagnostic session across the three papers identifies which subject is costing the marks, and tutoring one science properly is considerably cheaper than tutoring three vaguely.

DOUBLEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Double award: Cambridge 0654 or Pearson 4SC1

All three sciences compressed into the equivalent of two subjects, with two identical grades awarded. Content is reduced but the examination still moves between biology, chemistry and physics inside a single paper, and students lose real time re-orienting between them. Revising by paper section rather than by subject is the specific technique this route needs.

The double award is the most common route in this cluster and the most misunderstood. Parents assume it is simply easier; the assessment architecture is what makes it different. Ask the school which of the three sciences the papers weight most heavily for your child's specification, and whether the sixth form accepts the double award for A Level entry in each science.

COMBINEDAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Single combined science

All three sciences in one subject with one grade. Appropriate for a student who needs a science qualification rather than a science future, and genuinely limiting for one who may want a science A Level. The content is substantially reduced, which makes it manageable, and the grade counts as one subject towards the five that equivalency requires.

If your child is on this route and may want a science at sixth form, raise it now rather than in Year 11. Some schools will consider a move to the double award during Year 10 with evidence of performance at that level; almost none will consider it in Year 11. The evidence a school wants is marked papers at the higher route, which is something tutoring can produce.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Science tutoring is subject work even when the qualification is combined. These are the areas families in this cluster raise, with the specific demand each makes.

Biology: transport and exchange

All routes

Diffusion, osmosis, circulation and gas exchange. Marks go on explanations that name a structure without saying what its feature achieves - large surface area, thin wall, moist lining - which is the form the mark scheme credits.

Biology: genetics and inheritance

All routes

Monohybrid crosses, probability, variation and selection. Genetics questions reward drawing the cross out on paper rather than attempting it mentally, which is a habit rather than knowledge and is worth several marks a paper.

Biology: enzymes, respiration and photosynthesis

All routes

Rate graphs, limiting factors and the experimental contexts both appear in. The recurring loss is explaining a plateau on a graph by describing it instead of naming the limiting factor and saying why it caps the rate.

Chemistry: moles and stoichiometry

Extended, Higher and separate chemistry

Mass to moles, concentration, reacting masses and percentage yield. The highest-return topic in IGCSE chemistry at the higher tiers, because the calculations appear inside questions across the whole paper rather than in one section.

Chemistry: electrolysis and redox

All routes

Products at each electrode, half-equations and the reasoning behind which ion is discharged. Marks are lost on half-equations and on predictions stated without the reasoning that justifies them, which is where the marks actually sit.

Chemistry: organic and separation techniques

All routes

Homologous series, basic reactions, and the practical vocabulary for filtration, crystallisation, distillation and chromatography. Practical questions reward exact terminology, and vague descriptions score nothing even when the method is understood.

Physics: electricity and circuits

All routes

Current, potential difference, resistance, series and parallel circuits. The heaviest mark load in IGCSE physics and the largest source of confusion. Students lose marks on circuit reasoning stated as assertion rather than derived from the relationships.

Physics: forces, motion and energy

All routes

Speed and acceleration graphs, forces, moments and energy transfer. Graph questions dominate, and the recurring error is calculating a gradient from two data points rather than from widely separated points on the line of best fit.

Physics: waves, magnetism and radioactivity

All routes

Wave properties, electromagnetic effects and nuclear decay. Mostly a numerical-discipline problem: unit prefixes, powers of ten and conversions applied inconsistently inside one calculation, which costs marks the student thinks they earned.

Experimental skills and the written practical components

All routes and boards

Variables, range and interval, repeats, precision, significant figures, plotting, lines of best fit and evaluations that name a specific limitation. Examined in the Cambridge alternative-to-practical and inside Pearson's written papers, and teachable entirely on a screen.

Command-term discipline across the three sciences

All routes

State, describe, explain, suggest, compare and calculate specify different answers with different mark allocations. Students answer nearly everything as describe, which is the most comfortable mode and the lowest scoring on the extended questions.

Double-award paper navigation

Cambridge 0654 and Pearson 4SC1

The specific skill of switching between biology, chemistry and physics inside a single paper without losing time to re-orientation. Practised under timed conditions by paper section rather than by subject, which is the opposite of how most students revise.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of science tutoring, matched to the three routes, plus a straight answer on in-home tuition.

Single-subject weekly sessions

Where a triple-science student is losing marks in one of the three, the efficient arrangement is one session a week in that subject alone. Tutoring one science properly costs considerably less than tutoring three vaguely, and a diagnostic across the three papers identifies which one is carrying the problem within a single session.

  • Keyed to the specific syllabus code for that science
  • Driven by the student's own marked papers
  • Same tutor weekly so the diagnosis accumulates
  • Gulf Standard Time slots around the school run

Double-award sessions organised by paper section

For Cambridge 0654 or Pearson 4SC1 the tutoring follows the paper rather than the subject, because that is how the examination is structured and because switching between the three sciences under time pressure is itself the skill being tested. Timed section practice, then full papers, with the transitions deliberately rehearsed.

  • Revision organised by paper section, not by science
  • Switching between subject areas practised under time
  • Weakest science identified and given extra weight
  • Error log kept across all three subject areas

Experimental-skills block for the written practical components

A focused run of sessions on what the Cambridge alternative-to-practical and Pearson's written papers actually assess: variables, range and interval, repeats, precision, significant figures, plotting, lines of best fit and evaluations that name a specific limitation and a specific improvement. All of it worked on real datasets.

  • Board-specific: ATP technique or Pearson written-paper method questions
  • Graph work practised on real data rather than described
  • Evaluation writing taught as a structure
  • No board papers or mark schemes supplied; official sources cited

In-home science tutoring: the market and our position

Dubai has tutors who travel, at published in-home one-to-one rates of roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel per Bestimate's 2026 table and advertised home-tutor rates. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that service exists only in India. For science the mismatch risk is the specification and the route rather than the tutor's distance.

  • No IB Gram tutor travels to an address in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE
  • Travel premium in this market is roughly AED 50-150 an hour
  • A nearby tutor may know a national GCSE rather than 0654 or 4SC1
  • Apparatus work happens in the school laboratory under either model

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai International Academic City

01

Which science route is your child actually on?

This is the question to answer before anything else, and the answer comes from the examinations officer rather than from the class teacher. Ask for the entry list: subject, board, syllabus code, tier and option. Three separate sciences will appear as three entries with three codes. A double award appears as one entry - Cambridge 0654 or Pearson 4SC1 - and yields two identical grades. A single combined science appears as one entry yielding one grade.

The practical difference during the course is content volume and paper architecture. Separate sciences carry the most content and the cleanest structure, with each paper confined to one subject. The double award reduces content and keeps the breadth, but its papers move between biology, chemistry and physics, which costs students time they do not budget for. Combined science reduces content furthest.

The difference that lasts is what each route permits afterwards. Entry rules for A Level and for IB Diploma sciences are set by the receiving sixth form, not by the board, and they vary across this cluster. Some schools accept a double award for A Level entry in a science; some require the separate subject; some require a specific grade. This is a question to put in writing to two sixth forms during Year 10.

The table below sets out the three routes with what each typically permits. Treat the last column as a prompt to ask rather than as an answer, because the only authoritative version is the receiving school's own published entry requirements for your child's year group.

02

How each board assesses practical work

This is where revision most often goes astray, because the boards differ and the school adds a further choice on top. Cambridge sciences offer either a practical examination or the alternative-to-practical paper, and the school decides which its candidates sit. Pearson's International GCSE sciences - 4BI1, 4CH1, 4PH1 and the Science Double Award 4SC1 - have no practical examination at all and assess experimental skills inside the written papers.

For a Cambridge candidate entered for the practical examination, apparatus familiarity matters directly: reading instruments, following a method under time pressure, recording as you go. For a Cambridge candidate on the alternative-to-practical, the same skills are tested on paper through described experiments and supplied data. For a Pearson candidate, experimental skills appear as method-design and data-analysis questions inside the theory papers.

The skills themselves overlap almost entirely, which is the useful news. Identifying independent, dependent and controlled variables. Choosing a sensible range and interval. Deciding how many repeats and why. Reading a scale to the appropriate precision. Recording to consistent significant figures. Plotting with a sensible scale. Drawing a line of best fit rather than joining points. Writing an evaluation that names one specific limitation and one realistic improvement.

Every item on that list can be taught on a shared screen with a real dataset, which is why online science tutoring works better than parents expect. What cannot be taught that way is handling the apparatus itself, and that belongs in the school laboratory under any arrangement. Ask the school which component your child is entered for before buying any revision aimed at practical work.

03

Where science marks actually go, subject by subject

  • Command terms: describe and explain answered identically, on every extended question
  • Units omitted, or converted wrongly inside a multi-step calculation
  • Graph axes misread before any reasoning begins
  • Biology: structures named without the feature-to-function link the mark scheme wants
  • Chemistry: vague practical vocabulary where exact terminology scores
  • Physics: gradients taken from data points rather than the line of best fit

Mark two timed science papers properly and the losses sort into a short list that is mostly not content. Command terms account for the largest share: 'describe' and 'explain' carry different mark allocations and students answer both the same way, which costs marks on every extended question in the paper. Units omitted or wrongly converted account for the next share. Graph questions where the axes were read carelessly before any thinking happened account for a third.

The subject-specific losses are equally predictable. In biology, explanations that name a structure without saying what its feature achieves, and genetics crosses attempted mentally rather than drawn. In chemistry, half-equations, mole calculations at the higher tiers, and vague practical vocabulary where exact terminology was required. In physics, circuit reasoning asserted rather than derived, and gradients calculated from two data points rather than from the line of best fit.

None of this is a failure of understanding, which is why technique work moves a science grade faster than content revision in the final months. A student losing six or eight marks a paper to command terms and units can recover most of them in six to eight sessions, and that is a better return than the same hours spent re-reading notes on topics they already know.

The method for finding your child's own list: have one timed paper in each science marked question by question against the published mark scheme, with the reason for each lost mark written in the student's own words. Three or four reasons will dominate. That becomes the lesson plan, and the error log is checked for recurrence every session. It is also how you find out which of three sciences is actually carrying the problem.

Academic City, Silicon Oasis, Mirdif and International City compared

Families in this cluster shop by comparison, so it is worth doing the comparison honestly. What differs between these four neighbourhoods is the length of the school run, the time a weekday session can realistically begin, and whether a child can continue sciences at the same school into sixth form. What does not differ is the supply of tutors who teach a named international science specification at the higher tiers.

Academic City has one real structural advantage: Dubai English Speaking College runs the British route from IGCSE through to A Level on site, so a student there can continue sciences without changing schools. Silicon Oasis and Mirdif have schools inside the district with short runs, making a 4.45pm session realistic. International City has no international school at all within the district, so children travel out and weekday sessions start around six.

On tutor supply, the comparison collapses in the same way it does for every subject in this cluster. The number of people in eastern Dubai who teach Cambridge 0654 or Pearson 4SC1 routinely, and who hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, is small everywhere. A Mirdif family has a marginally better chance than one in Al Khawaneej, and neither has a choice worth calling a choice.

The practical conclusion from all four addresses is therefore the same: choose on whether the tutor knows the route and the specification, and let the delivery be online so that choice exists. The timing differences in these neighbourhoods are worth planning around, particularly for a triple-science student needing help in two subjects. The geography differences are not worth paying a travel premium for.

05

The sixth-form consequence, spelled out

The single most useful thing a science tutor can do for a Year 10 family in this cluster is make them ask one question of two sixth forms, in writing, before Year 11 begins: what IGCSE science route and grade do you require for entry to A Level biology, chemistry and physics, and to the equivalent Diploma courses? The answers vary, they are not always published clearly, and they are the only thing that makes the Year 9 route decision legible in hindsight.

Where the answer rules out a route the child is already on, there is a window. Some schools will consider moving a student from combined science to the double award, or from double to separate sciences, during Year 10, if there is evidence of performance at the higher route. The evidence a school wants is marked papers at that route under timed conditions, which is precisely what a targeted block of tutoring can produce in a term.

By the second term of Year 11 the window has closed in almost every school. Entries are made, content is nearly complete, and the remaining lever is technique within the route already chosen. Technique is worth real marks and it cannot change what the qualification permits afterwards, which is why this conversation belongs in Year 10 rather than in Year 12 when the consequence arrives.

For completeness: Ministry of Education equivalency is a separate and much lower bar. The published British-track requirement is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at a grade no less than E or grade 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic education, plus one Advanced Level subject at E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. A double award counts as two of the five. Equivalency is not the number to plan science routes around.

06

The June and November series, and the resit question in science

Cambridge International runs IGCSE and O Level examinations in a June series and a November series, and UAE candidates sit those two. The February and March series is offered to India only, so any advice to prepare for a February science paper is advice for a different country. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May and June and again in November.

Useful sourced reference points: Pearson's November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026; June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026; November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson publishes provisional timetables well ahead of each series, so any date you plan around should come from the live official timetable rather than a summary.

One Cambridge detail that belongs in every science plan: Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and publishes a different timetable version for each, stating that it is essential to use the correct version for your zone and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong one. Science candidates often sit several papers in a short window, which makes the zone check more than a formality.

On resits, science has a wrinkle the other subjects do not. A double-award or combined-science resit means resitting the whole award rather than one science, which is a much larger undertaking than repairing one weak paper. For separate sciences, ask for the component breakdown and resit the single subject that failed. That distinction alone often decides whether a November entry is sensible.

07

What science tutoring costs here, and what each band contains

Every figure below was published by the provider named and read in October 2026, and none is an IB Gram rate. Budget and university-student online tutors advertise from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. That band is usable for Core-tier and combined-science content support and rarely contains anybody fluent in Extended-tier chemistry calculations or the alternative-to-practical technique.

Qualified subject tutors online sit at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150. This is where most useful IGCSE science tutoring in Dubai actually happens. Specialists run AED 200 to 450 or more, with TutorChase at AED 270. In-home one-to-one including travel runs AED 180 to 500, per Bestimate at 180 to 350 and independent home tutors at 200 to 500.

The arithmetic for a triple-science student matters here. Three sciences at one session a week each, at the mid band, is a substantial monthly commitment - published monthly figures include AED 799 for eight online sessions, and Bestimate's mid-range estimate for a weekly hour is AED 600 to 1,200 a month per subject. Which is exactly why the diagnostic matters: most triple-science students need one subject tutored properly, not three.

Context on education costs generally: KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year under the emirate's second economic incentives package. For our own rates, the free trial lesson comes first and the figure is quoted against the specification and the work the diagnosis identifies.

08

Checking the tutor, and what we do not claim

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so disregard any amount quoted at you. Ask the individual teaching your child whether they hold a current permit and ask to see it.

Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. The application route is MoHRE's own service, Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system, with a stated two-working-day completion time.

One arrangement to decline rather than seek: the permit's code of conduct bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school, and in Abu Dhabi ADEK's professional-ethics rules prohibit private and charter school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school. An offer of your child's own science teacher, privately, is a problem for the teacher before it is a benefit to you.

And what we do not claim. No office, centre or branch anywhere in the UAE. No KHDA Educational Services Permit, which is the permit issued to training institutes with premises in Dubai. No approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, Cambridge or Pearson. No published star ratings we cannot evidence with countable reviews, no guaranteed grades, and no supplied board papers or mark schemes - we cite and link the official sources instead.

Where we tutor

Academic City compared with the districts either side

This cluster's families compare schools and tutors across district boundaries, so here is what genuinely changes between them for a science student.

Dubai International Academic City

A university free zone whose own secondary runs the British route from IGCSE through to A Level on site. The one neighbourhood here where a student can continue sciences at the same school without moving.

Dubai Silicon Oasis

Adjacent and apartment-dense, with schools inside the district and the shortest run in the cluster. A 4.45pm session is realistic, which matters when a triple-science student needs help in two subjects.

Mirdif

Both British-route and IB continuum schools within the district, so families here compare the two sixth-form science routes directly at the end of Year 9, which is when the IGCSE route decision is also made.

Al Warqa

A mixed catchment with a large Indian-curriculum population. Students transferring from CBSE science arrive with strong numerical work and need the explanation structure and practical vocabulary taught explicitly.

Al Qusais and Al Nahda

A dense older school cluster where students change boards mid-course more often than elsewhere. A Year 10 transfer between specifications can leave a genuine content gap in one of the three sciences.

International City

The clusters around Dragon Mart with no international school in the district. Weekday sessions begin around six, so the weekend morning carries the graph and calculation work that needs a clear head.

Nad Al Hamar and Al Rashidiya

Fast access across Ras Al Khor Road to the Garhoud schools, several of which have strong laboratory provision. A 5.30pm start is realistic; earlier slots lose their opening minutes to traffic.

Al Khawaneej, Al Mizhar and Dubai Festival City

The eastern edge and the waterfront, with longer runs to most secondaries here and effectively no local pool of tutors teaching a named international science specification at the higher tiers.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the entry list and identify the route

Three entries with three codes means separate sciences. One entry such as 0654 or 4SC1 means a double award. One entry such as 0653 means combined science. The examinations officer can produce this in minutes and it changes what the tutoring should be.

  2. 02

One timed paper in each science, marked properly

For a triple-science student this identifies which of the three is actually carrying the problem, which is usually one rather than all. Tutoring one science properly costs considerably less than tutoring three vaguely, and the paper settles it in a single session.

Free trial lesson and a written note

A real lesson on real science with the student working and the tutor diagnosing. Afterwards a plain summary: whether the losses are command terms, units, graph work or content, and what the available weeks would target. Say no and nothing further is owed.

Weekly sessions with an error log

One session a week in the subject that needs it, or paper-section sessions for a double award. The student keeps the error log and it is checked for recurrence each session, with short written reviews every few weeks on what has moved.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The route named before the lesson plan

Separate sciences, double award and combined science are three qualifications with different papers and different consequences at sixth form. We ask for the entry list first, which is also how we find out whether the route itself is the problem.

Practical assessment handled by board

Cambridge offers a practical paper or the alternative-to-practical and the school chooses; Pearson has no practical examination and tests the skills in the written papers. Revising apparatus technique for a Pearson candidate is weeks spent on something unexamined.

One subject tutored, not three

Most triple-science students are losing marks in one science rather than across all three. A diagnostic across the three papers finds which, and that single finding often cuts the monthly cost by two thirds.

The sixth-form question asked in Year 10

What route and grade does your sixth form require for A Level and Diploma sciences? Asked in Year 10 the answer is actionable, because some schools will move a student up with marked evidence. Asked in Year 12 it is just news.

Experimental skills taught on real data

Variables, range, repeats, precision, significant figures, plotting, lines of best fit, and evaluations naming a specific limitation. Every one is taught better on a shared screen with a dataset than beside apparatus, which is where the written practical marks live.

Rates attributed, claims limited

Every AED figure names the provider who published it and the month it was read. We hold no regulator approval, have no UAE premises, supply no board papers, and publish no guaranteed grades or unevidenced ratings.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai International Academic City: your questions answered

Can I get an IGCSE science tutor in Dubai International Academic City?+

Yes, as one-to-one online tuition rather than a tutor coming to your address, since IB Gram offers home visits only in India. For science this works better than families expect, because the written practical marks sit in skills taught well on a shared screen: variables, range and interval, precision, significant figures, plotting, lines of best fit and evaluation writing. Apparatus handling happens in the school laboratory under any arrangement, including with a tutor who travels.

Is my child taking three sciences, a double award or combined science?+

Ask the examinations officer for the entry list. Three entries with three syllabus codes means separate sciences. One entry such as Cambridge 0654 or Pearson 4SC1 means a double award, which yields two identical grades. One entry such as Cambridge 0653 means a single combined science and one grade. The difference matters mostly at sixth form: separate sciences keep every onward option open, a double award usually permits one or two, and combined science frequently permits none at the higher levels.

Does the double award close off A Level sciences?+

Not necessarily, but the rule belongs to the receiving sixth form rather than to the board, and it varies between schools a few kilometres apart in this cluster. Some accept a double award for A Level entry in a science, some require the separate subject, and some require a specific grade. Put the question in writing to two sixth forms during Year 10, because that is the window in which a school may still move a student to a different route with marked evidence.

Why does my son run out of time on the Co-ordinated Sciences paper?+

Because the paper moves between biology, chemistry and physics inside a single booklet and he is paying a re-orientation cost at every switch. It is a real and specific effect that content revision does not touch. The fix is to revise by paper section rather than by subject, and to practise the transitions under timed conditions until switching stops costing a minute each time. Most students have never been told the paper is structured that way.

Does my child sit a practical examination for IGCSE science?+

It depends on the board and the school. Cambridge sciences offer either a practical examination or the alternative-to-practical paper, and the school decides which its candidates sit. Pearson's International GCSE sciences - 4BI1, 4CH1, 4PH1 and the Science Double Award 4SC1 - have no practical examination and assess experimental skills inside the written papers instead. Ask the school which component your child is entered for before buying revision aimed at practical technique.

Which of the three sciences should we actually get a tutor for?+

Have one timed paper in each science marked question by question against the published mark scheme and the answer is usually obvious. Most triple-science students are losing marks in one subject rather than across all three, and most families discover this only after paying for three tutors for a term. Chemistry carries the problem more often than the others in this cluster, usually because of mole calculations at the higher tiers, but the paper should decide rather than the pattern.

Which skills does the written practical component award marks for?+

Not dexterity. It tests whether a student can identify independent, dependent and controlled variables, choose a sensible range and interval, justify a number of repeats, read a scale to the appropriate precision, record to consistent significant figures, plot with a sensible scale, draw a line of best fit rather than joining points, and write an evaluation naming one specific limitation and one realistic improvement. All of that is taught on a screen with a real dataset, which is why it suits online sessions.

My daughter knows the biology but her answers score two out of four. Why?+

Usually the command term and the structure of the explanation. Mark schemes in biology credit the link from a feature to what it achieves: a large surface area for faster diffusion, a thin wall for a shorter path, a moist lining for dissolving gases. A student who names the structure without making that link has described rather than explained. Underlining the command term before writing, and knowing that explain means causes, moves marks across every extended question in the paper.

Is Mirdif or Academic City better placed for IGCSE science tutoring?+

Academic City has one real structural advantage: its secondary runs the British route from IGCSE through to A Level on site, so a student can continue sciences without changing school. Mirdif and Silicon Oasis have shorter school runs, which makes a 4.45pm session realistic. On tutor supply the comparison collapses: the number of people in eastern Dubai teaching Cambridge 0654 or Pearson 4SC1 routinely is small everywhere, which is the argument for matching online rather than by distance.

Can we move my son from combined science to the double award?+

Possibly, in Year 10, with evidence. Some schools in this cluster will consider a move upwards if a student can show performance at the higher route under timed conditions, and marked papers at that route are the evidence they want. By the second term of Year 11 entries are made and the window has closed in almost every school. If a science at sixth form is a realistic ambition, raise it with the school in Year 10 rather than waiting for the Year 11 mocks.

How much would three science tutors cost in eastern Dubai?+

At the mid band it is a substantial monthly figure, which is precisely why the diagnostic matters. Market rates read in October 2026: qualified subject tutors online at AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150; published monthly packages include AED 799 for eight online sessions; Bestimate's mid-range estimate for a weekly hour is AED 600 to 1,200 a month. Most triple-science students need one subject tutored properly rather than three tutored thinly.

Should a double-award student resit in November?+

It is a bigger decision than for separate sciences, because resitting a double award usually means resitting the whole award rather than the one science that went wrong. For separate sciences you can ask for the component breakdown and resit the single weak subject. Request the breakdown either way as soon as results arrive. Note also the timing: November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026, after most sixth-form courses had already started.

When are IGCSE science papers sat in the UAE?+

Cambridge runs IGCSE and O Level examinations in a June series and a November series, and UAE candidates sit those two; the February and March series is offered to India only. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May and June and again in November. Science candidates often sit several papers in a short window, which makes one Cambridge detail important: every centre is allocated to one of six timetable zones, and Cambridge says using the wrong zone's timetable is the candidate's own risk.

Must a tutor teaching IGCSE science in Dubai hold a permit?+

Yes. The private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years, so it cannot be priced into a rate. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so treat any amount quoted at you as unverified. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents and university students.

Will the tutor send us the practical papers and mark schemes?+

No. That material belongs to Cambridge and Pearson and reproducing or distributing it is a copyright matter. We cite and link the official sources on cambridgeinternational.org and qualifications.pearson.com, which is also the only place certain to hold the current version rather than a specification two revisions out of date. Schools hold past papers and will usually release them to candidates, and the subject teacher is the fastest route to the right tier, option and variant.

Send the entry list and three marked papers

If your child is sitting IGCSE sciences and you live in Dubai International Academic City, Silicon Oasis, Mirdif, Al Warqa or International City, two things settle the plan. The entry list tells us the route - separate sciences, double award or combined - and the syllabus codes. One marked paper in each science tells us which subject is actually costing the marks and whether the losses are command terms, units, graph work or content. Most families discover they need one tutor rather than three. The trial lesson is free; lessons are one-to-one and online on Gulf Standard Time.
