IB Physics Tutor in Dubai International Academic City

An IB physics tutor in Dubai International Academic City is usually wanted after a specific kind of test result: good recall, poor marks. Physics punishes description where explanation was asked for, and it punishes uncertainty work almost nobody has been taught. This page is built on the syllabus itself - the five themes, the scientific investigation criteria, graph linearisation and the command terms that decide a grade. Lessons are one-to-one over live video.

  • Themes and skills taught against the current subject guide
  • Uncertainty and error propagation taught explicitly, not assumed
  • Investigation coached against the published criteria, never written
  • Free trial lesson with a written diagnosis afterwards

Why physics marks and physics understanding come apart

The characteristic physics problem is not ignorance. It is a student who can recount what happens in a circuit, or why a satellite stays in orbit, and whose written answer scores two marks out of five. Physics mark schemes reward a specific kind of sentence: one that names the quantity that changed, states the relationship, and reaches the consequence. An answer that describes the phenomenon in everyday language has not answered the question, however correct it is.

The second recurring loss is uncertainty. Every physics course requires students to handle measurement uncertainty, propagate it through a calculation, and reflect on it in the scientific investigation, and almost no student has been taught this systematically. It appears in data-analysis questions and it is where investigation marks quietly disappear. It is also entirely teachable, in a handful of sessions, because the rules are mechanical.

The third is graphs. Physics asks students to linearise a relationship, choose what to plot against what, and extract a physical quantity from a gradient or intercept. Students who can plot accurately often cannot say what the gradient represents, which is the actual question. This is not a drawing skill and it is not covered adequately in most schemes of work.

The current IB physics syllabus is organised into five themes: space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. Those themes replaced the older topic-and-options structure, so a tutor working from a guide that mentions options is working from the wrong document. Ask your child's school for the subject guide and the component weightings that apply to their cohort, because weightings are revised and the school holds the authoritative version.

One more thing a marked paper tends to reveal. Physics mark loss sorts into three buckets rather than one, and they need three different plans. Marks lost on extended-response questions mean the command terms are not being read. Marks lost on data-analysis questions mean uncertainty and graph work were never taught. Marks lost across one theme mean a content gap. Diagnosing which bucket dominates takes twenty minutes and saves weeks of the wrong work.

Geographically this cluster has a particular problem with physics specifically. Dubai International Academic City is a university free zone whose own secondary, Dubai English Speaking College, runs the British route. The nearest IB Diploma physics teaching is at GEMS Wellington Academy in Silicon Oasis, with Uptown International School in Mirdif, Universal American School in Al Warqa and the Nad Al Sheba schools beyond that. Physics at Higher Level is the single hardest combination to staff locally in eastern Dubai.

IB Gram delivers this online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time. We do not send tutors to homes in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service for us. For Higher Level physics that is not a compromise but the whole point, because the number of people within driving distance of Academic City who teach it is close to zero, and the number who can coach an investigation through uncertainty propagation is smaller still.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics tutoring from this cluster arrives at three points, and the useful work differs sharply between them.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

MYP sciences into Diploma physics

MYP sciences are graded 1-8 against four criteria: knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Marks go missing on criteria B and C rather than A, because students who know the content still design weak investigations and process data without evaluating it. Those are exactly the skills Diploma physics then assumes.

In this cluster the MYP runs at Uptown International School in Mirdif and Universal American School in Al Warqa. A student who has been assessed mainly on criterion A arrives in the first Diploma year without having designed an investigation independently, and the scientific investigation is where that shows. Working on criteria B and C in MYP 5 is cheaper than repairing it in DP1.

SLAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Physics, Standard Level

The full set of themes at standard depth, with written papers and the scientific investigation. Standard Level physics is frequently taken by students whose main interests are elsewhere, and the characteristic problem is mathematical rather than conceptual: rearranging equations, handling powers of ten, and reading a graph quantitatively under time pressure.

Standard Level physics tutoring requests from Academic City and Silicon Oasis are often really requests for mathematics support inside a physics context. That is a legitimate and efficient thing to buy, but it should be named, because it changes who the right tutor is and how long the work takes. One diagnostic session usually settles which of the two problems you have.

HLAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Physics, Higher Level

Additional content on top of Standard Level, greater mathematical demand, and longer papers. Higher Level physics is the usual requirement for engineering and physics degrees and is often taken alongside Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, which is a heavy quantitative load across two years.

This is the combination we most often cannot staff at short notice, particularly in the weeks before mock examinations when every Diploma family in the emirate wants the same specialists. We say so at the enquiry stage with a realistic wait rather than assigning a Standard Level tutor and letting a pleasant first lesson carry the arrangement.

IAAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

The scientific investigation

A single independent investigation worth 24 marks across four criteria: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, six marks each. It is the only part of the physics grade a student fully controls, and the only part where a weekend of careful work reliably outperforms a term of revision. It is also the most neglected.

The practical constraint in this cluster is laboratory access. Students at schools with limited apparatus sometimes design investigations they cannot execute, and the fix is choosing a question that works with what the school actually has. A tutor is useful here as a reality check on feasibility before the research design is committed to, not as a source of data.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Physics tutoring is theme and skill work in roughly equal measure. These are the areas families in this cluster raise, and what each one actually demands.

Space, time and motion

SL and HL

Kinematics, forces, momentum, energy and circular motion, with rigid-body and relativity content at Higher Level. Marks are lost on free-body diagrams that omit a force, and on momentum questions where the direction convention is never stated before the arithmetic begins.

The particulate nature of matter

SL and HL

Thermal physics, gas laws, and the kinetic model. The recurring error is explaining temperature change in terms of heat as a substance rather than as energy transfer, which mark schemes treat as a misconception rather than loose phrasing.

Wave behaviour

SL and HL

Oscillations, wave properties, superposition, standing waves, diffraction and interference, with more demanding treatment at Higher Level. Path-difference questions reward drawing the geometry; students who attempt them algebraically from memory lose most of the available marks.

Fields

SL and HL

Gravitational, electric and magnetic fields, potential, circuits and electromagnetic induction. This is the largest source of confusion in the course and the most common presenting problem. Induction questions in particular require the direction argument to be made explicitly rather than asserted.

Nuclear and quantum physics

SL and HL

Radioactive decay, nuclear binding energy, fission and fusion, the photoelectric effect and quantum phenomena. Mark loss is mostly numerical: powers of ten, unit prefixes, and electronvolt-to-joule conversion applied inconsistently inside one calculation.

Uncertainty and error propagation

SL and HL

Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, propagation through products, quotients and powers, and uncertainty in a gradient. Examined directly in data-analysis questions and central to the investigation's evaluation criterion. Mechanical rules, rarely taught, quickly learned.

Graph work and linearisation

SL and HL

Choosing what to plot against what so a relationship becomes a straight line, then extracting a physical quantity from the gradient or intercept. The question is almost never 'plot this' but 'what does the gradient represent', and that distinction is where marks sit.

The mathematics physics assumes

SL and HL

Rearranging multi-variable equations, logarithms, small-angle approximations, trigonometry in resolving vectors, and standard form arithmetic at speed. Physics does not teach these and penalises their absence throughout, which is why some physics tutoring is properly mathematics tutoring.

Command-term discipline

SL and HL

State, outline, describe, explain, deduce, determine, sketch and compare each specify a different kind and length of answer with different mark allocations. Students who answer every one as 'describe' lose marks on every extended-response question in the paper.

Experimental design and variable control

SL and HL

Independent, dependent and controlled variables, range and interval choice, repeat readings, and the systematic and random error distinction. Assessed in the investigation's research design criterion and in written data-analysis questions, and almost always the weakest part of a first draft.

Scientific investigation coaching

SL and HL

Research-question framing, feasibility against the school's apparatus, data handling, uncertainty treatment and the evaluation the criteria reward. All worked on the student's own data. The student designs, measures and writes; the tutor questions and gives feedback on drafts.

Physics for Extended Essay supervision support

Core

Where a student writes the Extended Essay in physics, the recurring failure is a research question that cannot be answered experimentally within the available apparatus and word count. A tutor interrogates the question and the method and reads the student's drafts, and writes nothing.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of physics tutoring that match the three distinct problems students present with, plus our position on the in-home option.

Weekly theme-and-skill sessions

One 60-minute session a week, alternating between the theme the class is covering and the transferable skills the course assumes: uncertainty, graph work, command terms and the mathematics behind the equations. Working from the student's own marked papers means the skill work is targeted rather than generic.

  • Follows the school's scheme of work for theme content
  • Builds uncertainty and graph skills in parallel from the first term
  • Same tutor weekly so the diagnosis accumulates
  • Gulf Standard Time slots around the school run

Investigation coaching block

Four to six sessions timed to the school's internal deadline, starting with whether the proposed research question is feasible with the apparatus the school actually has. The tutor questions the design, explains each of the four criteria, and comments on the student's own drafts and data treatment. The student designs, measures and writes every word.

  • Feasibility checked before the research design is committed to
  • Four criteria explained with their six-mark allocations
  • Uncertainty treatment taught on the student's own measurements
  • Feedback on drafts; no supplied text, data or analysis

Data-analysis and past-paper intensive

Concentrated work on the question types that cost the most marks: data-based questions, graph linearisation, uncertainty propagation and extended-response explanations. Marked against the published mark scheme so the student sees how an answer is credited rather than being told a score.

  • Diagnostic week on two timed papers at the correct level
  • Command-term drilling, which recovers marks fastest
  • Error log kept by the student and reviewed every session
  • Honest statement of what the remaining weeks can achieve

In-home physics tutoring: the market and our position

Dubai has tutors who travel, at published in-home one-to-one rates of roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel per Bestimate's 2026 table and advertised home-tutor rates. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that service exists only in India. For Higher Level physics the travelling pool in eastern Dubai is the thinnest of any subject.

  • No IB Gram tutor travels to an address in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE
  • Travel premium in this market is roughly AED 50-150 an hour
  • A nearby tutor may teach Standard Level well and Higher Level not at all
  • Apparatus work happens in the school laboratory under either model

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai International Academic City

01

The five themes and what each one actually demands

The current IB physics syllabus is organised into five themes rather than the older numbered topics with optional units. That restructuring matters for tutoring because a tutor working from an older guide will talk about options that no longer exist and may miss content that moved between levels. Ask the school for the subject guide that applies to your child's cohort, and ask specifically about component weightings, which are the detail most often out of date in third-party summaries.

What does not change is the character of each theme. Space, time and motion is where free-body diagrams and direction conventions decide marks. The particulate nature of matter punishes language that treats heat as a substance. Wave behaviour rewards drawing the geometry before reaching for an equation. Fields is the largest single source of confusion in the course. Nuclear and quantum physics is mostly a numerical-discipline problem rather than a conceptual one.

The table below sets out each theme with the characteristic failure and the diagnostic question a tutor can use to find it in one session. Those diagnostic questions are the useful part: they are quick, they are specific, and they separate a student who has a content gap from one who has a writing or numerical habit problem.

One scheduling note for this cluster specifically. Fields usually arrives in the second half of the first Diploma year, which is also when the scientific investigation starts competing for time. Families who book physics support before fields rather than during it have an easier year, because the theme is hard enough on its own without a coursework deadline running alongside.

02

The scientific investigation: four criteria, six marks each

The scientific investigation is worth 24 marks, assessed against four criteria carrying six marks apiece: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. No page competing for this search names a single criterion, which is a strange omission, because the equal weighting is the most actionable fact about the whole task. A brilliant conclusion cannot compensate for a weak research design, and most students spend their effort in the wrong place.

Research design is where the investigation is won or lost, and it happens before a single measurement is taken. It needs a research question that is answerable with the apparatus available, with the independent and dependent variables identified, the controlled variables named and actually controlled, and a method with a sensible range and interval and enough repeats to say something about reliability. Students in this cluster regularly design investigations their school's laboratory cannot execute.

Data analysis is processing, uncertainty treatment and presentation. This is where uncertainty propagation earns its marks and where most students lose them, because nobody taught the rules. Conclusion requires a statement justified by the data and placed in scientific context. Evaluation requires specific, prioritised limitations with realistic improvements - not 'more repeats would help', which earns nothing.

On process: the student chooses the research question, designs the method, takes the measurements, processes the data and writes the report. A tutor tests the feasibility of the question, explains what each criterion rewards, questions the design, and reads and comments on the student's drafts. One operator competing for these searches sells completed investigations at a published price; a malpractice finding from that falls on the candidate, not on the seller.

SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION CRITERIA AND MARKS, 24 TOTAL
CriterionWhat it assessesMarksWhere students lose them
Research designQuestion, variables, method, range and repeats6A question the school's apparatus cannot answer; controlled variables named but not controlled
Data analysisProcessing, uncertainty treatment, presentation6Uncertainty omitted or not propagated; graphs without error bars
ConclusionA justified answer placed in scientific context6An answer asserted without reference to the data that supports it
EvaluationSpecific limitations and realistic improvements6Generic statements such as 'more repeats would help'
What a tutor may doQuestion, explain criteria, read drafts, give feedbackNot applicableSupplying text, data or analysis is malpractice and falls on the candidate
03

Uncertainty: the mechanical rules nobody taught

  • Absolute uncertainty from instrument resolution or the spread of repeat readings
  • Add absolute uncertainties when adding or subtracting quantities
  • Add percentage uncertainties when multiplying or dividing
  • Multiply percentage uncertainty by the power when raising to a power
  • Gradient uncertainty from maximum and minimum lines through the error bars

Uncertainty is the clearest example of a topic where a few hours of teaching produces marks that no amount of content revision would. The rules are mechanical. Absolute uncertainty from an instrument's resolution or from the spread of repeats. Fractional and percentage uncertainty from dividing by the measured value. Addition of absolute uncertainties when quantities are added or subtracted. Addition of percentage uncertainties when quantities are multiplied or divided. Multiplication of the percentage uncertainty by the power when a quantity is raised to one.

Those five rules cover almost every uncertainty question a Diploma physics student will meet, in written papers and in the investigation. Students who know them answer data-analysis questions confidently and write evaluation sections that score, and students who do not lose marks in both places without understanding why. It is the highest-return hour in physics tutoring and it almost never appears in a scheme of work as a lesson of its own.

The second part is uncertainty in a gradient, which appears in graph questions and in investigations with a linear relationship. Drawing maximum and minimum gradient lines through error bars and taking half the difference is a procedure, and like all procedures it becomes reliable with practice rather than with explanation. Four or five worked examples usually settle it.

The third part is knowing what to say about it. An evaluation that identifies the largest single source of uncertainty, explains why it dominates, and proposes a specific change that would reduce it scores where a list of generic limitations does not. That is a writing skill built on the numerical one, and it is the difference between a mid-band and a top-band evaluation criterion.

04

Graph linearisation and what a gradient represents

Physics graph questions are rarely about plotting. They ask a student to turn a non-linear relationship into a straight line by choosing the right quantities for the axes, and then to identify what the gradient and intercept physically represent. A student who plots accurately and cannot answer the second part has done the easy half of the question.

The method is a habit rather than a topic. Start from the equation relating the quantities. Rearrange it into the form of a straight line. Read off what must be plotted on each axis, what the gradient equals in terms of the physical constants, and what the intercept means. Then, and only then, plot. Students taught this way stop guessing at axis choices and start deriving them, which takes a fortnight of practice rather than a term of explanation.

The error-bar and best-fit decisions follow from the same discipline. A line of best fit, not a join-the-dots curve. Error bars where the uncertainty is significant on the scale of the graph. A gradient calculated from widely separated points on the line rather than from two data points. Each of these is a specific mark in a data-analysis question and each is commonly dropped.

This also matters for the investigation, where a linear relationship presented well and analysed with gradient uncertainty is the clearest route to a strong data-analysis criterion. A student who has practised linearisation on past-paper questions has already done most of the thinking their own investigation will require, which is an argument for doing the skill work early rather than saving it for the data.

05

Command terms, and why good physics scores badly

The most frustrating thing a parent can see is a physics answer that is true, well expressed and worth two marks out of five. Almost always the cause is the command term. Each one specifies a different kind of answer: state wants a short factual response with no reasoning, outline wants a brief account, describe wants the features without causes, explain wants the causes, deduce wants a conclusion reached from given information, and determine wants a numerical answer with working.

Students answer nearly all of them as 'describe', which is the most comfortable mode and the one that earns fewest marks on extended-response questions. The fix is mechanical and fast: underline the command term before writing, and know what each one requires. A fortnight of deliberate practice on this alone moves marks across every paper, which is why technique work beats content revision in the final weeks.

The mark allocation printed beside the question is the second half of the instruction. A four-mark explanation needs four distinct creditable points, and a student who writes one point in beautiful detail has lost three marks to a number printed in bold on the page. Teaching students to plan an answer against its mark allocation takes one session and lasts the whole course.

The table below sets out the command terms most often misread in physics, with what the mark scheme is looking for. The diagnostic is easy: take one marked paper and check how many extended-response answers described rather than explained. In our experience it is usually most of them.

COMMAND TERMS IN PHYSICS AND WHAT THEY REQUIRE
Command termWhat the mark scheme wantsTypical lengthCommon error
StateA short factual answer with no reasoningOne lineAdding unnecessary justification and losing time
OutlineA brief account of the main pointsTwo or three pointsWriting a full explanation and running over time

SketchA labelled graph with the correct shape and key featuresA diagramAn unlabelled curve with no axes marked
06

Higher Level against Standard Level in physics

The difference between the two levels in physics is content volume and mathematical demand rather than a change of subject. Higher Level adds material on top of every theme and expects the mathematics to be handled fluently rather than carefully. A student who can rearrange an equation with effort will find Higher Level physics exhausting, because the rearrangement is a step inside a longer problem rather than the problem itself.

The combination question matters more than the level question. Higher Level physics taken alongside Higher Level Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches is a heavy quantitative load, and taken alongside a third demanding written subject it produces a January in the second Diploma year that effort alone will not solve. If your child is still choosing, map the assessment load across both years rather than looking at interest alone.

For university entry, Higher Level physics is the usual requirement for physics and engineering degrees, and Standard Level is frequently insufficient for those routes. Check the published requirements for the specific institutions, including the UAE ones, during the first Diploma year. Dropping from Higher to Standard Level is usually possible and dropping back up is usually not, which makes the early check worth doing properly.

For tutoring the practical difference is availability. Standard Level physics we can generally staff within days. Higher Level physics in the weeks before mock examinations is the single hardest thing on our list, because demand across Dubai peaks in the same fortnight. Booking in the first term costs the same and secures somebody who teaches the level rather than somebody who is free.

07

Practical work, laboratories and what online tutoring can and cannot do

A fair question deserves a direct answer. Apparatus work happens in the school laboratory, and no tutor on a video call can substitute for standing at a bench with a metre rule and a light gate. If your child's physics teaching depends on practical sessions they are not attending properly, tutoring is not the remedy; a conversation with the school is.

What a tutor can do is everything that surrounds the apparatus, and that is where the assessed marks sit. Choosing variables and a sensible range. Deciding how many repeats are worth taking and why. Recording to a consistent number of significant figures. Estimating and propagating uncertainty. Linearising and plotting. Calculating gradient uncertainty. Writing an evaluation that identifies the dominant error source. Every one of those is taught better on a shared screen with real data than standing beside a clamp stand.

The feasibility conversation is the other thing worth paying for. Students regularly propose investigations that need equipment their school does not own or precision it cannot reach, and discover this after a week of frustration. Half an hour spent testing a research question against the apparatus list is the single most useful intervention available before data collection starts.

What we do not do is contribute to the investigation itself, supply data, or provide IB, Cambridge or Pearson syllabus documents, past papers or mark schemes as downloads. We cite and link the official sources, which is also the only way to be sure the version is current. Schools hold past papers and the subject teacher is usually the quickest route to the right ones.

08

The physics year counted backwards, and the honest limits

UAE schools sit the May examination session. For physics the internal calendar matters as much as the external one, because the scientific investigation has a school deadline that typically lands in the second half of the first Diploma year or early in the second, where it competes with mock examinations and the Extended Essay in a crowded few weeks in January and February.

Counting backwards changes the plan. Uncertainty and graph skills built in the first term of the first year rather than discovered during data analysis. Research question tested for feasibility before the apparatus is booked. Investigation data collected and processed before mock revision begins. Timed data-analysis questions started in the first term of the second year rather than after the mocks.

We publish no specific IB session or results dates on this site. The IB's own site blocks automated checking, and a wrong date on a page a family plans around is worse than no date, so confirm every IB date with your child's Diploma coordinator or on ibo.org. For Cambridge and Pearson qualifications the dates are sourced: Cambridge runs June and November series for UAE candidates, the February and March series being offered to India only, and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May and June and in November.

The honest limits: we make no promises about grades, publish no predicted scores and offer no guarantee, because nobody can honour one. We hold no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and we have no office or centre anywhere in the UAE. On regulation, the MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and tutoring without it attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so disregard any figure quoted at you.

Where we tutor

Where physics students in this cluster live and go to school

Physics at Higher Level is the thinnest-staffed subject in eastern Dubai, so the differences between these neighbourhoods are logistical rather than substantive.

Dubai International Academic City

A university free zone off Al Ain Road whose own secondary runs the British route to A Level. Diploma physics students here travel out, most often one junction to Silicon Oasis, and a 5pm session is the practical floor.

Dubai Silicon Oasis

Adjacent and apartment-dense, with the nearest IB Diploma physics teaching in the district. The shortest run in the cluster, so two sessions a week is realistic in the second Diploma year.

Mirdif

Uptown International School runs the full IB continuum here, so MYP sciences and Diploma physics sit in the same building. Useful for continuity and no help at all with the Higher Level specialist shortage.

Al Warqa

Universal American School carries IB programmes alongside a large Indian-curriculum population. Students arriving from CBSE physics bring strong numerical fluency and need the explanation-writing and uncertainty work taught explicitly.

International City

The clusters around Dragon Mart with no international school in the district. Weekday sessions begin around six, so the weekend morning carries the data-analysis and past-paper work that needs a clear head.

Nad Al Hamar and Ras Al Khor

Fast access across Ras Al Khor Road to the Nad Al Sheba schools, where GEMS Modern Academy and North London Collegiate School Dubai run the Diploma. A 5.30pm start is realistic from here.

Al Khawaneej and Al Mizhar

The eastern edge, with no IB Diploma provision inside either district and effectively no local physics specialist pool. The clearest case in Dubai for matching a tutor online rather than by distance.

Dubai Festival City and Al Garhoud

Across the creek road, with Deira International School running the Diploma in Garhoud. A common alternative catchment, with the Festival City interchange as the limit on how early a session can start.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the level and the theme

Higher or Standard, which school, which theme the class is on, and what the last marked paper came back as. Physics divides into content problems, numerical problems and writing problems, and naming the theme lets a tutor guess which of the three before the first session.

  2. 02

One marked paper, read for pattern

Marks lost on extended-response questions point to command terms. Marks lost on data-analysis questions point to uncertainty and graph skills. Marks lost across a theme point to content. Those three diagnoses lead to three completely different plans, and the paper settles it in twenty minutes.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson and a written note

A real lesson on real physics, with the student working and the tutor diagnosing. Afterwards a plain written summary: whether the problem is content, numbers or writing, and what the available weeks would target. Say no and nothing further is owed.

  4. 04

    Skills in parallel with themes

Uncertainty, graph linearisation and command terms built alongside the theme the class is covering rather than saved for the investigation or the final term. The student keeps an error log and it is checked for recurrence each session.

  5. 05

    Feasibility check before the investigation

Half an hour testing the research question against the apparatus the school actually has, before any data is collected. It is the cheapest session in the whole arrangement and it prevents the commonest investigation failure in this cluster.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Uncertainty taught as five mechanical rules

Absolute from resolution, add absolutes when adding, add percentages when multiplying, multiply by the power, gradient from maximum and minimum lines. Those five cover almost every uncertainty question in the course and almost no scheme of work teaches them as a lesson.

The investigation criteria named with their marks

Research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, six marks each, twenty-four in total. Equal weighting is the most actionable fact about the task and no competitor page in this market mentions a single criterion.

Command terms as a fortnight of work

Explain means causes; describe means features; deduce means a conclusion from given information. Students answer everything as describe. Fixing that moves marks across every paper faster than any amount of content revision.

Linearisation derived, not guessed

Start from the equation, rearrange into straight-line form, read the axes and the gradient's meaning off the rearrangement, then plot. Taught this way, students stop guessing at axis choices, which is where the second half of every graph question lives.

Feasibility before data collection

Students in this cluster regularly design investigations their school's laboratory cannot execute, and find out a week in. Half an hour spent testing the research question against the apparatus list prevents the most common investigation failure here.

We say when Higher Level is unavailable

Physics at Higher Level in the weeks before mocks is the single hardest combination we staff, because demand across Dubai peaks in one fortnight. You hear that at the enquiry stage with a realistic wait rather than meeting a Standard Level tutor at specialist rates.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai International Academic City: your questions answered

Can I get an IB physics tutor in Dubai International Academic City?+

Yes, as one-to-one online tuition rather than a tutor coming to your address, since IB Gram offers home visits only in India. Physics is the clearest case for it in this district: Academic City is a university free zone whose own secondary runs the British route, and the number of people within driving distance who teach Diploma physics at Higher Level is close to zero. Matching online replaces proximity with whether the tutor teaches the level, which is what decides the grade.

Which syllabus themes will my child's physics class actually cover?+

Space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. These replaced the older numbered topics with optional units, which matters when choosing a tutor: anybody discussing option units is working from a superseded guide. Ask your child's school for the subject guide that applies to their cohort, and ask specifically about component weightings, since those are the detail most often out of date in third-party summaries of the course.

How are the 24 investigation marks split between the four criteria?+

Twenty-four marks, split equally across four criteria of six each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. That equal weighting is the most useful fact about the task, because it means a strong conclusion cannot rescue a weak research design, and research design is decided before any measurement is taken. Most students spend their effort on writing the report and lose marks on a method whose controlled variables were named but never actually controlled.

My daughter understands physics but her answers score badly. Why?+

Nearly always the command term. Explain requires causes and physical reasoning; describe requires features without causes; deduce requires a conclusion reached from information given; determine requires a numerical answer with working. Students answer almost everything as describe, which is the most comfortable mode and the lowest scoring on extended-response questions. The second cause is ignoring the mark allocation: a four-mark question needs four distinct creditable points, not one point explained beautifully.

Does my son need to be taught uncertainty separately?+

Almost certainly, and it is the highest-return hour in physics tutoring. Five rules cover nearly everything: absolute uncertainty from instrument resolution or repeat spread, add absolute uncertainties when adding or subtracting, add percentage uncertainties when multiplying or dividing, multiply percentage uncertainty by the power when raising to a power, and find gradient uncertainty from maximum and minimum lines through the error bars. They are mechanical, rarely taught as a lesson, and examined directly in data-analysis questions.

What does a physics graph question actually test?+

Not plotting. It tests whether a student can turn a non-linear relationship into a straight line by choosing the right quantities for the axes, and then say what the gradient and intercept physically represent. The method is to start from the equation, rearrange it into straight-line form, read the axes and the gradient's meaning off the rearrangement, and only then plot. A student who plots accurately and cannot interpret the gradient has completed the easier half of the question.

Can a tutor help with my child's physics investigation legitimately?+

Within a firm boundary. A tutor can test whether the research question is feasible with the school's apparatus, explain what each of the four criteria rewards, question the design, teach uncertainty treatment on the student's own measurements, and read and comment on drafts. A tutor cannot choose the question, design the method, supply or process data, or provide text for the report. The test is whether your child could explain, without notes, why every number and sentence is there.

Should my child drop physics from Higher to Standard Level?+

Materially, and the difference is content volume plus mathematical fluency rather than a change of subject. Higher Level adds material across every theme and expects equation rearrangement to be automatic, because it is a step inside a longer problem rather than the problem itself. The combination matters as much as the level: Higher Level physics with Higher Level Analysis and Approaches is a heavy quantitative load, and adding a third demanding written subject produces a very difficult second Diploma year.

How can online lessons help if the practical work is in the school lab?+

Apparatus handling has to happen in the laboratory and no video call substitutes for it. But the assessed marks sit in what surrounds the apparatus: choosing variables and a sensible range, deciding how many repeats and why, recording to consistent significant figures, estimating and propagating uncertainty, linearising and plotting, calculating gradient uncertainty, and writing an evaluation that names the dominant error source. All of that is taught better on a shared screen with real data than beside a clamp stand.

Which theme causes the most trouble for Diploma physics students?+

Fields, consistently. Gravitational, electric and magnetic fields, potential and electromagnetic induction together produce more confusion than the rest of the course combined, partly because potential and field strength are routinely conflated and partly because induction questions require a direction argument to be derived rather than asserted. It also tends to arrive in the second half of the first Diploma year, just as the scientific investigation starts competing for the same hours.

My child came from a CBSE school. What is different about IB physics?+

Usually the numerical fluency is strong and the writing and uncertainty work are not, which is a very specific and quickly addressed gap. Students arriving from Indian-curriculum schools in Al Warqa or International City tend to compute confidently and then lose extended-response marks by describing rather than explaining, and lose data-analysis marks because uncertainty was never part of their previous course. Two or three sessions on command terms and five on uncertainty usually closes most of the distance.

When should the investigation be finished to avoid the February crush?+

Research question tested for feasibility and data collected before mock preparation begins, with the report drafted while there is still slack in the timetable. In most schools in this cluster the investigation deadline, the Extended Essay submission, the Theory of Knowledge essay and the mock examinations collide within a few weeks in January and February. The investigation is the piece that gets sacrificed because it feels furthest from the examination, and it is worth twenty-four marks.

How much does Diploma physics tutoring cost in this part of Dubai?+

Market figures read in October 2026 and attributed to the providers publishing them: qualified subject tutors online sit at AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200; IB specialists run AED 200 to 450 or more, with TutorChase at AED 270; premium named tutors reach AED 500 to 650, with BartyED at AED 650; in-home one-to-one with travel runs AED 180 to 500. For Higher Level physics the budget band under AED 100 rarely contains anybody who teaches the level.

Is a physics tutor in Dubai required to hold a government permit?+

Yes. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years, so it cannot legitimately be priced into a rate. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so treat any figure quoted at you as unverified. Ask the person teaching your child whether they hold a current permit and ask to see it.

What if no Higher Level physics tutor is free when we need one?+

You hear that at the enquiry stage rather than in session three. Higher Level physics in the fortnight either side of mock examinations is the hardest combination on our list, because demand across the emirate concentrates in the same weeks. In that case we give a realistic wait, offer interim support in the adjacent mathematics if that genuinely helps and say where the boundary is, or decline. What we will not do is put a Standard Level tutor in front of a Higher Level candidate.

Send one marked physics paper and we will tell you what it shows

If your child is taking IB physics and you live in Dubai International Academic City, Silicon Oasis, Mirdif, Al Warqa or International City, one recent marked paper answers most of the useful questions. Marks lost on extended responses point to command terms; marks lost on data questions point to uncertainty and graph work; marks lost across one theme point to content. Those are three different plans. Tell us the level, the school and the theme the class is on, and we will say honestly whether a specialist is free. The trial lesson is free and lessons are one-to-one and online, on Gulf Standard Time.
