IB MYP Tutor in Business Bay

An IB MYP tutor in Business Bay is working on something most parents have never been taught to read: a report made of criterion letters and marks out of eight, not percentages. Nothing about living beside the canal changes those criteria, and nothing about the district next door changes them either. IB Gram matches Business Bay families to an MYP specialist and teaches live online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Work read against the actual criterion descriptors, letter by letter
  • Criterion marks translated into the 1 to 7 grade a parent sees
  • Personal Project coached without a word of it being written
  • Session times set by the Business Bay school run, not by driving distance

IB & IGCSE in Business Bay

The report is in letters, and that is the whole problem

Middle Years Programme reports arrive looking nothing like the reports a parent grew up with. Instead of a percentage and a rank there are four criterion letters per subject, each marked out of eight, and a converted grade from 1 to 7. A child can hold a 6 and a 3 in the same subject. The 3 is the thing to act on and it is frequently the thing nobody discusses, because the converted grade looks respectable and the conversation stops there.

That is what an MYP tutor is for in practice. The subject content in MYP 3 or MYP 4 is rarely the difficulty. The difficulty is that each subject group is assessed against four published criteria which reward different behaviours, and students are strong at two of them and weak at two of them in a pattern that repeats across every piece of work for years. A tutor who reads the criterion marks rather than the converted grade can name that pattern in one session. A tutor who teaches generic maths or generic science will improve the criterion the student was already good at.

This page is written as a comparison, because Business Bay parents ask a comparison question. They want to know whether living here, rather than in Downtown Dubai or DIFC or Sobha Hartland, puts their child at any disadvantage in finding help. The answer is no, and it is worth spelling out why: the MYP criteria are set internationally, the same descriptors are used in every IB school in the city, and the people who know how to read them are scattered across the world rather than concentrated in any Dubai district. What the district changes is the hour a session can start.

Business Bay in particular has no secondary campus inside it. Children here are driven or bussed out towards Sobha Hartland, Al Jaddaf, Al Barsha or Jumeirah and come home in the late afternoon. Lessons are delivered live online, one-to-one, over video, which removes travel from both ends of the evening. IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai — home visits are a service we offer only in India — and this page makes the comparison openly rather than implying something different.

What follows is the machinery. The eight subject groups and the criteria attached to each. How a total out of 32 becomes a grade out of 7, and why a child two marks below a boundary looks identical to one five marks below it. Where MYP marks genuinely go missing, which is almost always the same two criteria. The Personal Project in MYP 5 and the exact line a tutor may not cross on it. What happens in September of DP1 or Year 10 to a student who has only ever been assessed this way. And what the Dubai market charges, with each figure attributed to whoever published it.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three IB programmes bear on an MYP family's decisions in this corridor: the Primary Years Programme behind it, the Middle Years Programme itself, and the Diploma that most MYP 5 students move into.

PYPAges 3-12 · Years 1-6

Primary Years Programme

Inquiry-led and transdisciplinary, ending in the Exhibition. Students arrive in MYP 1 fluent in asking questions and presenting findings, and frequently short of the written fluency and arithmetic speed that MYP subject criteria start to reward from MYP 2 onwards. That mismatch is normal and is cheapest to address in MYP 1 and 2.

Several central Dubai schools run the full IB continuum, so a Business Bay child may move from PYP to MYP without changing building. Families transferring in from a British or Indian primary meet the criterion system for the first time in MYP, which is where most of the early confusion in this corridor comes from.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Five years across eight subject groups, each assessed against four criteria marked out of eight and converted to a 1 to 7 grade. MYP 5 adds the Personal Project, and some schools enter students for the optional on-screen examinations and ePortfolios that lead to the IB MYP Certificate. Interdisciplinary units and service as action run throughout.

In Dubai the programme runs alongside the emirate's mandatory subjects — Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral studies — which are taught in separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students. Those hours are part of the week, so an MYP 4 student in Business Bay has less discretionary study time than the subject list alone suggests.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Where MYP 5 students usually arrive next. Assessment changes shape entirely: externally marked papers, command terms with fixed meanings, and an internal assessment in each science. Students who have been assessed only against criteria for five years meet timed written examinations for the first time, which is the single predictable difficulty of DP1.

Not every Business Bay family continues in the IB. Some schools in the corridor move students from MYP 5 into International A Levels, and some transfer into a British school for IGCSE at Year 10. Each route produces a different September gap, and knowing which one is coming decides what MYP 5 support should concentrate on.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the MYP subject groups and courses Business Bay families most often ask for, with the criterion that usually causes the trouble in each.

Mathematics

MYP 1-5, standard and extended

Criteria A to D: knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Criterion B is where most marks are lost, because it asks a student to find and justify a general rule rather than complete a calculation.

Sciences

MYP 1-5, integrated and discrete

Criteria A to D: knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Criterion D is routinely under-marked because students describe an impact without evaluating the science behind it.

Language and literature

MYP 1-5

Criteria A to D: analysing, organizing, producing text, and using language. Students who write fluently often score well on D and poorly on A, because analysis means explaining the effect of a choice rather than identifying that a choice was made.

Individuals and societies

MYP 1-5

Criteria A to D: knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating, and thinking critically. Criterion D rewards evaluation of sources and of competing interpretations, which is a different skill from knowing the content well.

Language acquisition

MYP 1-5, phases 1-6

Assessed on listening, reading, speaking and writing, with the phase rather than the year group setting the standard. Parents are often surprised that a child can move year group without moving phase, and that the phase is what determines the descriptors used.

Design

MYP 1-5

Criteria A to D: inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, and evaluating. The most process-heavy subject in the programme, and the one where documentation rather than the finished product carries the marks.

Arts

MYP 1-5, visual and performing

Criteria covering knowledge, developing skills, thinking creatively and responding. The process journal is assessed, which means a strong performer with a thin journal scores below a careful one, and that is a correctable problem.

Physical and health education

MYP 1-5

Assessed on knowledge, planning for performance, applying and performing, and reflecting on performance. Written reflection carries real weight, which surprises families who assume the subject is judged only on the field.

Personal Project

MYP 5

Three criteria — planning, applying skills, reflecting — totalling 24 marks, with a process journal and a report. The product itself is not what is marked, and students who understand that early score noticeably better than those who do not.

Arabic and the Dubai mandatory subjects

All MYP years

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral studies are required in Dubai private schools whatever the licensed curriculum, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students and the language of instruction set accordingly.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements Business Bay MYP families usually choose between, all delivered live online over video, one-to-one unless stated.

Criterion repair, one subject

A short block aimed at the one criterion a report shows as weak. Typically six to eight sessions working on the student's own marked tasks against the published descriptor, until the student can predict their own criterion mark before the teacher gives it. The cheapest intervention available in this programme.

  • Built from the school's own criterion feedback
  • The descriptor read aloud and applied to the student's work
  • Ends when the student can self-mark accurately

Weekly support through MYP 4 and 5

One fixed session a week in the subject carrying the most risk, running alongside the school's units. MYP 4 and 5 are where content starts to matter as well as process, and where the decisions about Diploma Higher Levels or IGCSE tiers are quietly being made on the evidence of current grades.

  • Tracks the school's unit sequence and statement of inquiry
  • Builds timed written practice ahead of DP1 or Year 10
  • Written note after each session naming one target

Transition block into DP1 or Year 10

A focused series in the summer between MYP 5 and the next stage, concentrating on the specific gap that route creates: timed examination technique and subject arithmetic for the Diploma, or content coverage and tier-appropriate past papers for IGCSE.

  • Route decided first, then the gap mapped
  • Timed written practice introduced deliberately
  • No new content taught that the school will cover anyway

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Business Bay

01

What an MYP tutor actually does, and why it is not subject tutoring

  • First session reads marked work, it does not teach content
  • The pattern is usually two strong criteria and two weak ones
  • The descriptor is the teaching material, not a textbook
  • Success is the student self-marking accurately
  • Short and ending, not open-ended

An MYP tutor spends the first session reading rather than teaching. The material is the student's last three marked tasks and the criterion marks attached to them. In almost every case a pattern appears immediately: consistently strong on criterion A, consistently weak on criterion B or D, across every unit for two years. That is not a content problem and it will not be solved by covering the topic again, which is what a general subject tutor will do because it is the only tool they have.

The criteria reward specific behaviours and they are published in plain language. Criterion B in mathematics asks a student to investigate a pattern and justify a general rule. Criterion D in sciences asks for evaluation of the impact of science, not description of it. Criterion A in language and literature asks for analysis of effect, not identification of a device. A student who has never had the descriptor read to them is guessing at what is wanted, and guessing well in two of the four.

So the work is diagnostic first and then narrow. The tutor and student take one piece of the student's own work, read the descriptor for the weak criterion, and mark the work against it together. Then the student rewrites that section and marks it again. After six or eight repetitions the student can predict their criterion mark before the teacher returns it, and at that point the tutoring has done its job. This is a short intervention with a visible end, not an open-ended arrangement, and a tutor who presents it as a two-year commitment is selling something else.

02

Business Bay against the districts next door, and why the answer does not change

Parents here compare districts because property and school decisions are made together, and it is reasonable to ask whether another address would make support easier to find. On this question the comparison is unusually clean. The MYP criteria are set by the IB and are word for word identical in every school in the table below. A tutor who can read criterion D in sciences can read it for a student in Meydan, Sobha Hartland or Downtown with no adjustment whatever.

What the table actually compares, therefore, is logistics. Which MYP schools each district reaches, how long the afternoon return takes in term time, and the earliest hour a weeknight session can realistically start. Districts with a campus inside them buy an hour of evening, which is worth having. They do not buy access to a subject specialist, because that person is not resident in any of these districts in the first place.

The second thing worth reading from the table is the regulator column. Every district listed sits under the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which oversees the quality of private education in Dubai and inspects schools annually. An inspection band tells you something real about a school. It tells you nothing about whether a tutor who understands criterion B in MYP mathematics lives nearby, and parents routinely read it as though it did. Commute figures here are term-time observations rather than published data and shift with routing.

One caveat that does favour a particular address: a child who walks to school keeps a predictable evening, and predictability is worth more than an early start. A family in Meydan whose bus time swings by half an hour each day will find a fixed weeknight slot harder to hold than a Business Bay family on a consistent route, and that is a real reason to book the later of two candidate slots.

Eight subject groups, four criteria each, and the one that hurts

The programme has eight subject groups and each is assessed against four criteria lettered A to D, every one marked out of eight. That gives a maximum of 32 criterion marks per subject per reporting cycle. The letters mean different things in different subjects, which is the detail that catches families out: criterion C is communicating in mathematics, processing and evaluating in sciences, and producing text in language and literature.

The table below sets out the criteria by subject group alongside the one that most commonly costs marks. The pattern across cohorts is consistent. The criteria rewarding recall and organisation are the ones students do well. The criteria rewarding investigation, evaluation and critical thinking are the ones they do not, because those are taught as classroom habits rather than as content and a student can go years without anyone showing them what the descriptor actually asks for.

A parent can use this table immediately. Take the last report, find the subject with the lowest criterion mark, read across to see what that criterion rewards, then ask the teacher one question: what would an 7 or 8 on this criterion look like in my child's next task? That question gets a specific answer from almost every MYP teacher, and it is a better starting point than any amount of general revision. Confirm the exact criterion names and strands for your child's year with the school, since the IB revises subject guides periodically.

04

How criterion marks become the grade on the report

The four criterion marks are added to a total out of 32, and that total is converted to a grade from 1 to 7 using boundaries the IB publishes and schools apply. The conversion is where information is lost, and it is why two children with the same grade can need entirely different help. A student on 19 and a student on 23 both appear as a 5. One is a mark from a 4 and the other is a mark from a 6, and the report does not say which.

The practical consequence for a Business Bay parent is that the converted grade is the least useful number on the page. Ask for the criterion marks, every reporting cycle, in every subject. Most schools provide them as standard and almost all will provide them on request. With those four numbers you can see whether a 5 is improving or sliding, and which single criterion would move the grade if it gained two marks.

This also explains the familiar frustration of a child who works hard and whose grade will not move. If the weak criterion stays weak, the total cannot cross the boundary no matter how much the strong criteria improve, because each criterion is capped at eight. A student scoring 8, 4, 8, 4 is working at the ceiling in half the subject and cannot reach a 7 without addressing the other half. That is a targeted problem with a short solution, and it is invisible from the grade alone. Confirm the boundaries your school applies, as these are the generally published bands rather than a school-specific table.

05

Where MYP marks actually go missing

  • Read the descriptor before writing, not after
  • Document process weekly in Design, Arts and the Personal Project
  • Command terms have fixed meanings and they recur in the Diploma
  • Ask for criterion marks rather than the converted grade
  • Rewrite one task against one descriptor rather than revising broadly

Three failures account for most of it. The first is answering the task rather than the criterion. A student writes a good piece of work about the topic and never does the thing the descriptor asks for — justifies nothing, evaluates nothing, compares nothing. The work is not wrong; it is answering a different question. This is the single commonest cause of a capped criterion and it is fixed by reading the descriptor before writing, every time, until it becomes automatic.

The second is the process journal and the documentation. In Design, Arts and the Personal Project the marks sit in the record of what the student did and why, not in the finished artefact. Students who make something impressive and document it thinly score below students who make something modest and document it carefully. Parents find this counterintuitive and it is worth accepting early, because it turns a vague instruction into a concrete weekly habit.

The third is command terms. MYP command terms have fixed meanings and they are the same words the Diploma will use later with the same meanings. Describe, explain, evaluate, justify and analyse want different things and a student who treats them as synonyms loses marks in every subject simultaneously. Fixing command terms once in MYP 3 or 4 pays across eight subject groups and keeps paying for the next five years.

A fourth, smaller leak is worth naming: work handed in without the task sheet beside it. Most MYP tasks are issued with the criteria being assessed printed at the top, and students who never look at that line are guessing at which two of the four matter for this piece. Checking it takes ten seconds and recovers marks on every task.

06

The Personal Project, and exactly where a tutor stops

  • Three criteria, 24 marks, and the product is not the assessment
  • The process journal is evidence, and it has to be written weekly
  • A tutor questions, reads drafts and gives feedback
  • A tutor does not choose the goal or write any part of the report
  • Get the boundary in writing before the term starts

In MYP 5 every student completes the Personal Project: a self-directed piece of work with a product or outcome, a process journal and a report, assessed against three criteria — planning, applying skills, and reflecting — for a total of 24 marks. The product is not what is marked. The planning, the evidence of skills applied, and the quality of reflection are. Students who grasp that in the first fortnight routinely outscore students with far more impressive products.

A tutor can be genuinely useful here and the boundary is absolute. The tutor may ask whether a goal is specific enough to be evidenced, whether a success criterion is measurable, whether the journal actually records decisions rather than activities, and whether a reflection is reflecting or just narrating. The tutor may give feedback on a draft the student has written. The tutor may not choose the goal, write the report, draft the reflection, or produce any part of the product.

This matters beyond the marks. Under IB academic-honesty rules, submitting work that is not the student's own is malpractice, and the consequence falls on the student. There are providers in this market selling completed assessed work at four-figure prices; buying it exposes a child to an academic-honesty investigation at the start of their senior school career. Ask any provider to state the no-writing boundary in writing before the Personal Project term begins. A provider who hesitates has answered the question.

Timing helps too. Most of the mark is decided in the first month, when the goal and the success criteria are set, long before the product exists. Two sessions in that first month are worth more than six in the last, and families who book late usually find the tutor can only tidy a reflection that was always going to score what it scores.

07

MYP 5 into DP1 or into Year 10, and the September gap

  • Diploma gap: timed papers and command-term discipline, not content
  • IGCSE gap: syllabus coverage and tier-appropriate past papers
  • Decide the route before the summer, then plan the specific gap
  • Do not spend the summer on content the new school will teach

The useful question in MYP 5 is not how to raise this year's grades but which gap is coming. A student continuing into the Diploma has been assessed against criteria for five years and will meet timed, externally marked written papers for the first time. The content is usually fine. What is missing is examination behaviour: working to the clock, reading a mark allocation and budgeting words to it, and recognising that a correct answer to the wrong command term earns nothing.

A student transferring into a British school for IGCSE at Year 10 has a different gap. IGCSE rewards content coverage and tiered paper technique, and assumes a body of specific knowledge that the MYP taught through inquiry rather than in syllabus order. Here the summer work is content mapping — finding what the new syllabus assumes and the MYP did not cover in that form — plus tier-appropriate past papers early enough to influence the school's tier decision.

The third route, less common in this corridor, is International A Levels after MYP 5 via a one-year bridge or a direct entry where the school permits it. Whichever route applies, decide it before the summer and plan around that gap specifically. A generic summer tutoring block spends six weeks on content the new school will teach anyway, while the actual difficulty — timed written work for the Diploma, syllabus coverage for IGCSE — goes untouched until October.

Ask both the current school and the receiving one a single question in writing: what do you assume a student knows on day one? The answers are usually specific and they differ, and the difference between them is the summer's work. That one email replaces most of the guessing that otherwise goes into a transition block.

08

What MYP support costs in this corridor

MYP tutoring tends to be bought in short blocks rather than by the year, which changes how the rates should be read. A criterion-repair block of six to eight sessions is the commonest purchase in this corridor, so the relevant question is what that block costs rather than what an hour costs. At the specialist end of the Dubai market the block lands between roughly AED 1,200 and AED 3,000 depending on the rate; at the generalist end, between about AED 300 and AED 500.

The published hourly figures behind that: Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65, which is the university-student and generalist band. Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200 for a qualified subject tutor online. Named IB and IGCSE specialists run roughly AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270 and Bestimate's 2026 Dubai table giving 200 to 450 or more. In-home visits including travel are quoted at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate and up to AED 500 by independent home tutors; BartyED publishes AED 650 at the premium end.

Every one of those numbers belongs to the provider named beside it and none is an IB Gram price. What they tell an MYP parent is where the money is worth spending. For criterion work, the thing being bought is someone who has read the descriptors enough times to recognise a pattern in six marked tasks. That is a specialist skill and it sits in the middle band, not the top. Paying in-home rates for it buys travel, which changes nothing a student writes. Start with the free trial lesson and a consultation, and judge the diagnosis.

Getting started from Business Bay, with the limits stated

  • Send the criterion marks and two marked tasks first
  • A trial lesson at 17:30 or 18:00 fits most Business Bay evenings
  • A block should have a stated end, not an open commitment
  • Ask to see the MoHRE permit; it is free for two years
  • No UAE office, no accreditation claimed, no grade promised

Send three things before any lesson: the last report with criterion marks visible, two or three marked tasks in the weak subject, and the school's current unit outline if you have it. A tutor with those can name the pattern in the first session instead of the fifth. Then book a free trial lesson at an hour that survives the bus — 17:30 works for most Business Bay families and 18:00 is comfortable.

Expect to be told whether a short block or weekly support is the right answer, including when the answer is neither. An MYP 2 student whose criterion marks are all above five does not need paid tutoring and should be told so. Where a block is right, it should have a stated end: the student self-marking accurately against the descriptor. Open-ended MYP tutoring with no defined finish is usually a sign that nobody has diagnosed anything.

The limits, plainly. Lessons are delivered live online and nowhere else in the UAE; IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai, because home visits are an India-only service. Private tutoring here requires the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years — ask to see it. IB Gram holds no accreditation or partnership with KHDA, the Ministry of Education or the IB, runs no UAE office, promises no grade, and writes no part of a student's assessed work.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Business Bay

These are the districts Business Bay is weighed against, and the MYP schools each one actually reaches. The pattern repeats: the commute varies, the criteria do not.

Business Bay

Towers either side of the canal and no secondary campus. Every MYP student commutes out, which means the practical constraint is the afternoon bus rather than anything to do with the programme.

Downtown Dubai

A bridge away, equally campus-free, reaching the same schools. An MYP family here faces the same return time and the same answer about where the subject expertise actually is.

DIFC

Offices and towers with no schools. Children travel out and the evening starts later, so MYP sessions here tend to sit at 18:00 rather than 17:30.

Al Jaddaf

Holds an IB continuum school, so a minority of MYP students here have a five-minute journey. Even then, a specialist in a particular subject group is a separate question from a nearby campus.

Sobha Hartland

Two established schools inside the community, one running the IB continuum. The commonest source of MYP enrolment in this corridor and the earliest afternoon finish.

Meydan and Nad Al Sheba

Villa communities with longer journeys both ways. MYP families here often settle on a weekend morning session plus one weeknight rather than two weeknights.

Culture Village

A small creek-side pocket. Secondary students almost all travel out, and a weeknight session rarely starts before six once the bus and homework are accounted for.

A full session with the specialist you would keep, spent reading the student's own work against the published descriptor for the weakest criterion. You hear which criterion is capped and what a higher mark on it would look like, then decide whether to continue.

  3. 03

Agree a block with an end point

Most MYP work is six to eight sessions on one criterion, finishing when the student can predict their own mark. The plan states that end point in advance, so the arrangement is measured against something rather than continuing by default each term.

  4. 04

    Rewrite, self-mark, repeat

Each session the student rewrites a section of their own work, marks it against the descriptor, and compares that mark with the tutor's. The gap between the two narrows session by session, and when it closes the student no longer needs the tutor for that criterion.

  5. 05

Plan the next stage in MYP 5

Before the summer after MYP 5, the route is confirmed — Diploma, IGCSE or A Levels — and the work switches to the specific gap that route creates. Timed written technique for the Diploma, syllabus coverage and tier practice for IGCSE.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Criteria read, not content re-taught

The first session reads marked work against published descriptors instead of re-covering a topic. In the Middle Years Programme the capped criterion is almost always the problem, and re-teaching content improves the criterion the student was already strong in.

The grade translated back into marks

A converted grade from 1 to 7 hides which of four criteria failed and by how much. Parents are shown the four marks and the boundary bands so they can see whether a 5 is rising or sliding, which a report alone does not reveal.

The Personal Project boundary stated in writing

A tutor questions the goal, the success criteria, the journal and the reflection, and gives feedback on drafts the student wrote. Nobody chooses the goal or writes a line of the report. That boundary is agreed before the term starts, not negotiated during it.

Blocks with an end, not open commitments

Criterion work finishes when the student can self-mark accurately, usually in six to eight sessions. Saying so in advance means the arrangement can be judged against something, rather than rolling forward each term because nobody set a finish line.

Matched on the subject group, not the postcode

Business Bay has no secondary campus, so proximity filtering removes specialists and gains nothing. What matters is a tutor who has read the descriptors for this subject group repeatedly and can teach at an hour that survives the afternoon bus.

Rates and rules with their sources

Every AED figure is attributed to the provider that published it, the permit position cites the resolution that created it, and no regulator accreditation is claimed anywhere, because IB Gram holds none.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Business Bay: your questions answered

What is the difference between an MYP grade and a percentage?+

An MYP grade is a conversion, not a percentage. Each subject is assessed against four criteria marked out of eight, giving a total out of 32, which is then converted to a grade from 1 to 7 using published bands. A 5 covers a total anywhere from 19 to 23, so two students with the same grade can be four marks apart. That is why the criterion marks matter more than the grade. Ask the school for all four marks each reporting cycle; most provide them as standard and nearly all will on request.

My child holds 5s in MYP but the school says that is not enough for Higher Level. Why?+

Because a 5 spans a wide band and because schools look at which criteria produced it. A student scoring 8, 4, 8, 4 totals 24 and looks solid, but is working at the ceiling on half the subject and has never scored well on investigation or evaluation — the exact behaviours a Higher Level course demands constantly. Ask the school which criterion they are concerned about and what an 7 on it would look like in the next task. That turns a vague judgement into a specific, fixable target.

How are the four MYP criteria actually marked?+

Each criterion has published descriptors in bands, and a teacher judges which band best fits the work, awarding a mark out of eight. The criteria mean different things in different subject groups: criterion C is communicating in mathematics, processing and evaluating in sciences, and producing text in language and literature. The marks are not averaged across tasks mechanically; teachers use their judgement of the student's current best-fit performance. That is why reading the descriptor with your child is more useful than asking for more practice questions.

Does the MYP prepare a child for IGCSE as well as it does for the Diploma?+

It prepares them differently. The Diploma shares the MYP's command terms, its inquiry habits and its internal assessment culture, so the transition is mainly about meeting timed external papers for the first time. IGCSE assumes a body of content in syllabus order and rewards tiered paper technique, which the MYP teaches through inquiry rather than coverage. Neither transition is difficult if the right gap is addressed. The mistake is treating both as the same summer of general revision, which leaves the real difficulty untouched until October.

What is the Personal Project and how much of MYP 5 does it decide?+

It is a self-directed project completed in MYP 5 with a product or outcome, a process journal and a report, assessed against three criteria — planning, applying skills and reflecting — totalling 24 marks. The product itself is not marked. What is marked is the planning, the evidence of skills applied and the quality of reflection. It does not determine the other subject grades, but it is often the first substantial independent piece of work a student produces, and schools use it as evidence about readiness for the Diploma.

May a tutor help with the Personal Project without breaking IB rules?+

Yes, within a firm boundary. A tutor may ask whether a goal is specific enough to evidence, whether success criteria are measurable, whether the journal records decisions rather than activities, and whether a reflection reflects or merely narrates. A tutor may give feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor may not choose the goal, draft the report, write the reflection or produce any part of the product. Submitting work that is not the student's own is malpractice under IB rules and the consequence falls on the student.

Is criterion D the reason my child's science grade will not move?+

Frequently, yes. Criterion D in sciences asks a student to reflect on the impacts of science, and most students describe an impact rather than evaluating the science behind it. Because each criterion is capped at eight, a strong criterion A cannot compensate indefinitely: once A is at the ceiling, the total cannot rise without D improving. Ask for the four marks across the last three reporting cycles. If D has sat at four or five while A sits at seven or eight, you have found the problem and it is a short piece of work to fix.

Should we move our child from the MYP to IGCSE before Year 10?+

It depends on the destination rather than on which programme is better. If the child is likely to stay in an IB school through the Diploma, staying in the MYP avoids a pointless change of assessment system. If the family may move to a British school or to A Levels, switching before Year 10 avoids arriving mid-course into tiered IGCSE papers. Ask both schools what content they assume at entry, in writing, and decide on that rather than on reputation. Either route works when the gap is planned for.

How much does MYP tutoring cost for a Business Bay family?+

Buy it as a block rather than by the hour, because the usual purchase is six to eight sessions on one criterion. At the published Dubai specialist rates — TutorChase at AED 270 an hour, Bestimate's 2026 table at AED 200 to 450 and above — that block lands roughly between AED 1,200 and AED 3,600. The generalist online band, Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65, puts a block nearer AED 200 to 520 but rarely buys descriptor expertise. All figures belong to the providers named.

Is an MYP tutor in Downtown Dubai closer to my child's school than an online one?+

Not meaningfully. Downtown has no secondary campus either, so a tutor there is no nearer your child's school than anyone else, and the MYP criteria are identical in every IB school in the city regardless. What a nearby tutor would offer is a car journey you pay for in either time or rate. What an online specialist offers is someone who has read the descriptors for your child's subject group repeatedly. Timing is the only genuinely local variable, and online delivery removes travel at both ends of a weeknight.

Which schools near Business Bay run the MYP rather than IGCSE?+

Business Bay has no campus of its own, so students travel. Several schools in the creek-side cluster run the IB continuum through the MYP, including North London Collegiate School Dubai and Swiss International Scientific School Dubai in the Sobha Hartland and Al Jaddaf direction, while others nearby run a British curriculum to IGCSE and offer the Diploma afterwards. Dubai International Academy Al Barsha is an IB school in the second direction. Those names are context for the school run only; no affiliation or endorsement is implied, and the school's own admissions page is the authority.

What time can an MYP session start on a weeknight in Business Bay?+

Most Business Bay students are home between 15:45 and 16:30 in term time, which makes 17:30 workable and 18:00 comfortable once a snack and some homework have happened. Children commuting from the Jumeirah direction return later and often settle on 18:30. Because lessons are online there is no travel to add at either end, which is the practical advantage of this district. Hold a slightly later slot for the first fortnight, then move it earlier once you know what the bus route actually does in traffic.

Do Business Bay MYP students sit external examinations at the end of MYP 5?+

Only where the school chooses to enter them. The IB offers optional on-screen examinations and ePortfolios in MYP 5 which lead to the IB MYP Certificate, and some schools in Dubai use them while others do not. Ask your school directly, because it changes what MYP 5 preparation should look like: an entered cohort needs timed on-screen practice, while a school using internal assessment alone needs the criterion work to continue. Either way, the Personal Project is completed and the subject criteria are assessed as usual.

How do the Dubai mandatory subjects fit into a Business Bay school's MYP timetable?+

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral studies are required in all Dubai private schools whatever the licensed curriculum, and the emirate's rules require separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students, with combined classes prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Instructional time is calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit. The practical effect on an MYP family is that the week contains fewer discretionary hours than the eight subject groups suggest, which is worth counting before adding two tutoring sessions.

What happens if no MYP specialist is free for my child's subject group?+

You are told, with the wait. Coverage for a specific subject group at a specific weeknight hour is not guaranteed, and the honest options are a different slot, a short wait for a named tutor, or a different weekday. What should not happen is being matched to a general tutor described as an MYP specialist, which costs a family several sessions before anyone admits the descriptors are unfamiliar. Asking a provider directly what happens when nobody is available is a reasonable test of any of them, including this one.

Send the criterion marks and book a trial lesson

An IB MYP tutor in Business Bay is reading a report, not a postcode. Send the last report with all four criterion marks visible and two marked tasks in the subject that worries you, then book a free trial lesson at an hour that survives the afternoon bus. You should come out of it knowing which criterion is capped, what a higher mark on it looks like, and how many sessions it ought to take. Lessons run live online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time. No grade is promised, no accreditation is claimed, and no part of a student's own work is written for them.
