IB Chemistry Tutor in Business Bay

An IB Chemistry tutor in Business Bay is, in practice, a tutor for a child who lives in a tower on the canal and attends school somewhere else entirely. Nothing about that address changes the Chemistry. It changes only the hour a lesson can start. IB Gram matches Business Bay families to a Chemistry specialist and teaches live online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time, starting with a free trial lesson.

IB & IGCSE in Business Bay

A Business Bay address is a commute, not a curriculum

Business Bay has towers, a canal, offices and almost no schools. The children who live here are driven or bussed out every morning — towards Sobha Hartland, Al Jaddaf, Al Quoz, Al Barsha or Jumeirah — and they come back somewhere between half past three and half past four depending on which direction the bus turned. That single fact explains most of what a parent here needs to know about arranging Chemistry support. The subject does not vary by district. The evening does.

Parents in this area often start by searching for someone close by, on the reasonable assumption that proximity makes a lesson easier. For most subjects at most levels there is something in that. For IB Chemistry at Higher Level it inverts. The pool of people within a twenty-minute drive of Business Bay who can confidently teach entropy, buffer calculations and the mechanisms of nucleophilic substitution is small. The pool of people who can teach those things well, somewhere on earth, at seven o'clock Gulf Standard Time, is much larger. Choosing the second pool is the whole argument for online delivery, and it is an argument about quality rather than convenience.

This page is written as a comparison, because that is the question Business Bay families actually ask: is my district better or worse placed than the next one over? Downtown Dubai sits a bridge away and has the same answer. DIFC, Al Jaddaf, Culture Village, Meydan and Sobha Hartland all have the same answer. The reason is that none of these districts contains the Chemistry specialist a Diploma student needs, so all of them are buying the same thing — a subject expert reached over live video. What differs between them is only the clock: how long the bus takes, and therefore whether a session can start at five, six or seven.

What follows is the Chemistry rather than the marketing. The current subject guide reorganised the course into Structure and Reactivity themes, and the assessment sits on two papers plus one internally assessed investigation. Each of those three components fails in a different way, and a tutor who treats them as one thing wastes a term. Below you will find the component weightings, the places marks genuinely go missing, the four criteria the investigation is marked against, what the Dubai market charges for this kind of help, and where the boundary sits between coaching a student's investigation and interfering with it.

One thing is stated plainly throughout. IB Gram does not send a tutor to a Business Bay apartment; home visits are a service we run only in India, and every UAE lesson is delivered live online. The phrase parents type is often a home tutor, and the honest response is to answer that question properly — what the in-home market charges, what the travel premium buys, how families weigh it — and then show the comparison rather than hide behind it.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three IB programmes matter to a Business Bay family thinking about Chemistry: the Diploma, where Chemistry becomes a named course with papers and an investigation, the Middle Years Programme that feeds it, and the Career-related Programme that some Dubai schools run alongside the Diploma.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

The two years where Chemistry becomes a graded subject. A student takes it at Standard or Higher Level, sits two written papers and submits one scientific investigation of their own design. Higher Level adds depth to every theme rather than new isolated topics, which is why students who coped at Standard Level can still stall: the questions assume they can combine two ideas that were taught months apart.

In Dubai the Diploma sits alongside the KHDA mandatory subjects — Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral studies — which occupy timetable hours a student in another country would spend on sciences. A Business Bay student commuting to Sobha Hartland or Al Jaddaf therefore has less free study time than the raw timetable suggests, and Chemistry tends to be the subject that absorbs the shortfall.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Sciences are taught as one integrated subject assessed against four criteria rather than as separate Chemistry papers. Students arrive in the Diploma fluent in investigation design and the language of criteria, and often short of fluency in the calculation work that Chemistry Standard Level assumes from the first week — moles, concentrations, stoichiometric ratios done at speed and without a prompt.

Several central Dubai schools run the MYP through to MYP 5 instead of IGCSE, so a Business Bay family choosing a school is also choosing which gap their child will have in September of DP1. That gap is predictable and is the cheapest thing to fix: a short block of arithmetic-of-chemistry work in the summer before the Diploma does more than a term of catch-up afterwards.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

A smaller route combining two or more Diploma courses with a career-related study and a core of its own. A student may take Chemistry Standard Level inside the Career-related Programme and be assessed on exactly the same papers and the same investigation as a full Diploma candidate, which means the tutoring need is identical even though the overall qualification is not.

Dubai has a handful of schools offering this route, usually attached to business, hospitality or engineering pathways. Business Bay parents sometimes discover it only after the Diploma has already proved too broad. Where Chemistry is one of the retained courses, the assessment calendar and the investigation deadline are set by the same school coordinator, so the support plan does not change.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Chemistry is the page's subject, but it is rarely the only one in the plan. These are the courses Business Bay families most often add once Chemistry is stabilised, with what each actually assesses.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Two written papers plus the scientific investigation. Marks concentrate in energetics, equilibrium, acid-base calculations and the organic mechanisms, and Higher Level questions routinely require two of those at once. Paper 1B is data analysis under time pressure and is the component most students have never practised separately.

Biology

HL and SL

Shares the investigation structure and the command-term discipline with Chemistry, which makes the two cheap to tutor together. Students lose marks on explain and evaluate questions by describing a process accurately and never naming the mechanism the mark scheme wanted.

Physics

HL and SL

The science most dependent on algebraic fluency. A Business Bay student taking Chemistry and Physics together usually needs one shared repair — rearranging and substituting without arithmetic slips — rather than two separate subject plans.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Supplies the calculus and logarithm work that Chemistry HL assumes when it reaches rate equations and pH. Students on Applications and Interpretation can still take Chemistry HL comfortably, but the log work needs covering somewhere.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Heavier on statistics, modelling and technology use. Useful to a Chemistry student for the data-analysis half of Paper 1 and for the uncertainty treatment the investigation criteria expect.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Assessed through an individual oral, a paper on unseen non-literary texts and, at Higher Level, an essay on a studied work. The writing discipline transfers directly into the evaluation section of a science investigation.

Economics

HL and SL

Three papers plus a portfolio of commentaries on published news articles. A common Diploma pairing for students who want a science and a social science, and a frequent source of timetable collision in the investigation term.

Environmental Systems and Societies

HL and SL

An interdisciplinary course that can satisfy either the sciences or the individuals-and-societies requirement. Business Bay students sometimes carry it alongside Chemistry, and the two share enough data-handling that one tutor can cover both.

Arabic as an additional language

All levels

Mandatory in Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum. It is examined on its own terms and is a common reason a Diploma student has less revision time for Chemistry than the family expected.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

An exhibition and a prescribed-title essay. Chemistry students often find the exhibition easier than peers because the investigation has already trained them to justify a method, but the essay rewards a different register entirely.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways a Business Bay family usually buys Chemistry support, and what each is genuinely for. All three are delivered live online over video, one-to-one unless stated.

Weekly one-to-one through the course

One or two fixed sessions a week running alongside the school's scheme of work. The tutor stays a week ahead of the class so the lesson can pre-teach rather than repair, which matters most in the equilibrium and energetics blocks where a week of confusion compounds quickly.

  • Fixed slot held for the term, Gulf Standard Time
  • Works from the school's own topic order
  • Written note after each session naming the next target

Investigation support block

A short series of sessions around the scientific investigation: narrowing a research question that can actually be measured, planning for a usable range of data, handling uncertainty, and reading the four criteria as the examiner reads them. The student writes every word; the tutor questions and gives feedback.

  • Criterion-by-criterion feedback on the student's own draft
  • Method and apparatus discussed before data collection begins
  • No writing, editing to completion or supply of a research question

Pre-examination repair sprint

Six to ten weeks of concentrated past-paper work in the final run-up, built around whichever themes a marked mock exposed. The sequence is diagnostic first, then one component at a time, because Paper 1B and Paper 2 reward different habits and mixing them wastes the sprint.

  • Starts from a marked mock, not a syllabus checklist
  • Paper 1B data work practised separately and timed
  • Mark-scheme language rehearsed until it is automatic

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Business Bay

01

What a Business Bay search for a Chemistry tutor is really asking

  • No campus inside the district, so every student commutes
  • The subject guide is the same in every IB school they travel to
  • Distance filters out specialists without improving the lesson
  • The only genuine local variable is the hour a session can start

The literal question is where is the nearest person. The useful question is who can teach this particular course. An IB Chemistry tutor in Business Bay is almost never a neighbour, because Business Bay is a commercial and residential district with no secondary campus inside it. Every Diploma student here already travels for school, and the Chemistry they are travelling to is set by a single international subject guide that is identical in every one of those schools.

That makes the proximity instinct expensive. A parent who filters for distance is filtering on the one variable that does not affect the teaching, and is discarding the variable that does. Higher Level Chemistry is a narrow specialism. A tutor who has taught it repeatedly knows that students lose predictable marks in buffer calculations and in the mechanisms, and knows which past-paper questions expose each. A capable general science tutor who lives nearby does not know that, and will spend four sessions discovering it.

There is one real advantage to living in this district, and it is worth naming. Business Bay evenings are flexible because the family is already organised around a commute. Parents are frequently working in the same tower cluster, the child is home by late afternoon, and nobody has to drive anywhere for a lesson at seven. Compared with a villa community further out, where a tutor's travel time would have to be paid for, an online session costs the family nothing in logistics at all.

02

Business Bay against the districts either side of it

A comparison is the fastest way to settle this. The table below sets Business Bay next to the districts its families most often weigh themselves against, on the four things that actually differ: which schools the district reaches, how long the afternoon return takes in term time, the earliest hour a weekday Chemistry session can realistically begin, and whether any of that changes the Chemistry itself.

The last column is the point of the exercise. It reads the same in every row. Content, papers, weightings and the investigation criteria do not vary by district, by school or by emirate, because they are set internationally. A family in Sobha Hartland with a five-minute school run and a family in Meydan with a forty-minute one are buying the same subject expertise; they are simply booking it at different times of the evening.

Commute figures here are term-time observations rather than published data, and they move with roadworks and bus routing. Treat them as the shape of the problem, not a timetable. The practical rule Business Bay parents end up applying is simple: hold a slot thirty minutes later than you think you need for the first fortnight, then pull it earlier once you know what the bus actually does.

The second column deserves a note of its own. Districts with a campus inside them are not automatically better placed for Diploma support. A child who walks to school in Sobha Hartland gains an hour of evening, which is real, but gains nothing in access to a Higher Level Chemistry teacher outside school hours. The regulator for all of these districts is the same body, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which inspects Dubai private schools annually on a six-band scale. An inspection grade describes the school, not the availability of subject tutors near it, and parents frequently read it as though it did.

03

Where the Chemistry content actually sits now

The course was reorganised so that content is grouped under two headings rather than eleven numbered topics. Structure covers the particulate nature of matter, models of bonding and structure, and the classification of matter. Reactivity covers what drives reactions, how much and how fast and how far they go, and the mechanisms by which change happens. Higher Level does not bolt on separate topics so much as deepen each of these, which is why the step up feels like the same syllabus asking harder questions.

Assessment sits on two written papers and one internally assessed investigation. Paper 1 has two parts that behave completely differently: 1A is multiple choice across the whole course, and 1B is data-based analysis of unfamiliar material. Paper 2 is short and extended response. The investigation is marked in school against published criteria and moderated by the IB. Any tutoring plan that does not treat those as three separate skills will improve one of them and leave the grade roughly where it was.

The weightings below are the shape most Dubai schools work to, and they are the reason a mock result can mislead. A student who is strong on recall and weak on unfamiliar data can look comfortable in a topic test and then lose a grade on Paper 1B. Confirm the current component structure and durations with your child's IB coordinator before planning a revision sequence around them, because subject guides are revised and the school holds the authoritative version.

04

Where Chemistry marks actually disappear

  • Mechanisms: arrow direction, not mechanism names
  • Equilibrium: interpretation and mark-scheme vocabulary
  • Energetics: sign conventions in cycles and entropy work
  • Buffers: deciding which species is in excess before the formula
  • Paper 1B: unfamiliar data treated as a readable passage

Four places account for most of the lost marks, and they are diagnosable in a single session with a marked paper in front of you. The first is the organic mechanisms. Students learn the names of the mechanism types and then cannot draw the arrows, because the arrows require a decision about which species is electron-rich and which is electron-poor. A student who has memorised a diagram reproduces it for the one case they memorised and fails the variant.

The second is equilibrium and the arithmetic around it. Setting up an expression is usually fine; the loss happens in interpreting what a change does to the position of equilibrium and then saying so in the vocabulary the mark scheme accepts. The third is energetics, where enthalpy cycles and entropy reasoning are both conceptually simple and procedurally unforgiving — one sign error and an otherwise correct answer earns nothing. The fourth is acid-base calculation, particularly buffers, where students apply a formula without noticing which species is in excess.

None of this is fixed by covering the syllabus again. It is fixed by working marked questions in each of the four areas, naming the specific error each time, and then returning to the same question type a fortnight later to confirm it has gone. That loop is what a specialist does automatically and what a general tutor takes a month to arrive at. It is also why the first session with a new student is spent reading their marked work rather than teaching.

05

The scientific investigation, criterion by criterion

The investigation is one piece of work the student designs, carries out and writes up, marked in school against four published criteria and moderated by the IB. It carries a fifth of the final Chemistry grade, which puts it on a par with a written paper, and it is the component Business Bay families most often leave until the deadline is visible. It is also the component where the boundary between help and malpractice matters most.

The table sets out the four criteria, what each is actually rewarding, and what a tutor may legitimately do in each. The pattern is the same in every row: the tutor may ask questions, name the standard, point at a gap and comment on a draft the student has written. The tutor may not supply the research question, write the method, process the data or draft the evaluation. Those are the things being assessed, and a student who submits them as their own is exposed to an academic-honesty investigation.

In practice the mark is usually decided before any data is collected. A research question with a measurable independent variable, a sensible range and a realistic apparatus list sets up every other criterion. A question that is too broad produces data nobody can analyse, and the student then writes an evaluation that is mostly an apology. The cheapest intervention available in this subject is two sessions on the research question, several weeks before the school's internal deadline.

What Chemistry support costs around the central corridor, counted by the month

Most published rates are hourly, which is the least useful unit for a decision. Families commit by the month, so start there. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table puts a weekly one-hour arrangement at roughly AED 240 to 600 a month at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Packages advertised in this market include online blocks around AED 799 a month for eight sessions and in-home blocks of AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour visits.

Converting back to hourly, the cheapest end of the market is university-student and generalist online tuition: EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. A qualified subject tutor online sits higher — Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. Named IB and IGCSE specialists run roughly AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270. In-home one-to-one visits including travel are quoted at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate and up to AED 500 by independent home tutors. At the top, BartyED publishes AED 650.

Those figures are the market's, attributed to whoever published them, and they are not an IB Gram price list. What the spread tells a Business Bay parent is where the money actually goes. The gap between a generalist at AED 60 and a Higher Level Chemistry specialist at AED 270 is subject knowledge. The gap between an online specialist and an in-home one is travel, which in this district buys a tutor sitting on your sofa instead of on your screen and buys nothing at all in teaching quality. Start with the free trial lesson and a consultation rather than a package, and judge the first marked piece of work.

Academic honesty, the permit question, and what a parent can check

  • Ask to see the MoHRE private tuition work permit
  • The permit is free for two years; a quoted fee is a warning sign
  • No fine amounts are published; do not believe a figure
  • Never pay your child's own class teacher for private lessons
  • Get the no-writing boundary stated in writing before the investigation term

Two things in this market are worth a parent's scepticism, and both are checkable. The first is any offer to help with assessed work in a way that crosses into producing it. The investigation, the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge essay must be the student's own. There are providers in this SERP selling completed internal assessments at four-figure prices; that is academic malpractice under IB rules and the consequence falls on the student, not the seller. A tutor teaches, questions, and gives feedback on work the student has already written.

The second is the permit. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated: the private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students, and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. Those tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so treat any specific figure you are quoted as unverified.

A Business Bay parent can therefore ask three concrete questions and expect answers. Does the person teaching my child hold the permit, and can I see it? Will they put in writing that they will not write any part of the investigation? And in Abu Dhabi schools, the regulator's professional-ethics rules bar staff from paid tutoring of pupils enrolled at their own school, so never arrange paid lessons with your child's own class teacher. IB Gram holds no accreditation from KHDA, the Ministry of Education, the IB or any examination board, and does not describe itself as if it did.

08

Getting started from a Business Bay tower, with the limits stated

The first step is a free trial lesson with a Chemistry specialist, booked at an hour that survives the school run. Bring the most recent marked paper, the school's topic order for the term, and the internal deadline for the investigation if one has been set. Those three documents let a tutor diagnose in forty minutes what would otherwise take a month of lessons to notice, and they turn the trial into a working session rather than an audition.

After the trial you will be told plainly whether weekly support is the right answer. Sometimes it is not. A student who is three weeks behind on one topic needs a short block, not a term's commitment, and saying so is more useful than selling the term. Where a two-year plan does make sense, it usually runs as one weekly session through DP1, two in the investigation term, and a concentrated past-paper sprint in the final run-up, with the weighting shifted according to what the mock exposes.

The limits are these. Lessons are delivered live online and nowhere else in the UAE — IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai, because home visits are an India-only service. A Higher Level Chemistry specialist at a specific hour is not always available immediately, and when that happens you will be told what the wait is rather than offered a generalist described as a specialist. No grade is promised, by anybody, at any price. What is offered is a subject expert, a diagnosis you can read, and an honest account of what the next eight weeks can achieve.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Business Bay

These are the districts a Business Bay Chemistry student is compared against, and the schools each one actually reaches. The pattern is consistent: the commute changes, the Chemistry does not.

Downtown Dubai

One bridge over, with the same absence of secondary campuses. Families here reach the same Sobha Hartland and Al Jaddaf schools and face the same late-afternoon return, so the earliest workable Chemistry slot is identical.

DIFC

Towers and offices, no schools. Children commute outward and the evening starts late, which pushes Diploma sessions towards seven o'clock. The Chemistry specialist they need is not resident in the district either.

Al Jaddaf

Home to an IB continuum school, so a minority of children here walk or drive five minutes. Even for them, a Higher Level Chemistry specialist is a different question from a nearby campus.

Sobha Hartland

Two established schools inside the community, which is why Business Bay families often choose it. Pupils finish earlier and can take an earlier slot; the subject specialism they need is unchanged.

Meydan and Nad Al Sheba

Villa communities to the south-east with longer school runs in both directions. Chemistry sessions here usually settle at a weekend morning plus one weekday evening rather than two weeknights.

Culture Village

A small waterfront pocket on the creek. Nearly all secondary pupils travel out, and the practical consequence is a session that cannot reliably start before six on a school night.

Al Quoz and Al Quoz 4

Mixed industrial and residential, with several schools close by. Families combining a short commute with a Higher Level science still reach outside the district for the subject expertise.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Business Bay

Sobha Hartland, Al Jaddaf and the creek side

The cluster most Business Bay Diploma students attend. Between them these schools run the IB continuum, the Diploma alongside a British curriculum, and in one case a bilingual stream, so Chemistry is taught from the same subject guide but assessed on different internal calendars.

  • Hartland International School
  • North London Collegiate School Dubai
  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai
  • Credence High School
  • GEMS Our Own Indian School

Al Barsha, Al Quoz and the Al Khail corridor

The second direction a Business Bay bus turns. These schools draw heavily from the central corridor and several offer the Diploma after a British Year 11, which means a Chemistry student here has come through IGCSE rather than the MYP and arrives with different gaps.

  • Dubai International Academy Al Barsha
  • GEMS Wellington Academy Al Khail
  • Repton School Al Barsha
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Dubai Heights Academy

Jumeirah, Al Safa and Umm Suqeim

Reached from Business Bay along Al Wasl Road. Mostly British-curriculum schools with Diploma streams or sixth forms, and the afternoon return from this direction is the slowest of the three in term time.

  • Safa British School
  • Horizon English School
  • Jumeirah College
  • Raffles World Academy
  • Emirates International School Jumeirah

Schools are named here as context for the Business Bay school run; no affiliation, endorsement or relationship with any of them is implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send the marked work first

Before any lesson, share the most recent marked Chemistry paper and the school's topic sequence. Reading a student's actual errors is faster and more accurate than any questionnaire, and it means the trial lesson starts from evidence rather than from a conversation about confidence levels.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson at a workable hour

A full session with the specialist you would keep, timed around the Business Bay school run. The tutor works a past-paper question in each weak area and tells you which of the four classic loss points applies. You decide afterwards whether to continue, with nothing committed in advance.

  3. 03

    Agree the component split

Paper 1A, Paper 1B, Paper 2 and the investigation need different work. The plan states how many sessions go to each over the term and which comes first, so you can see what is being prioritised rather than discovering it later from an invoice.

  4. 04

    Weekly sessions with written notes

Each lesson ends with a short written note: what was covered, what the student got wrong, and the single target before next week. That note is what lets a parent in a different time zone or a different tower know whether the arrangement is working.

  5. 05

    Reassess after the mock

A marked mock is the only honest checkpoint. The plan is rebuilt around it — sometimes dropping a topic that is now secure, usually adding timed Paper 1B practice, occasionally recommending that the family stops because the student no longer needs paid support.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched on the course, not the map

A Business Bay family is matched to someone who has taught this Chemistry course repeatedly, wherever they live. Filtering for a tutor within driving distance of the canal removes most of the people who can teach Higher Level mechanisms properly and improves nothing about the lesson.

The investigation handled early and honestly

Support concentrates on the research question weeks before the school deadline, because that is where the mark is decided. The student writes every word. Nobody drafts a method, processes data or supplies a conclusion, and that boundary is stated in writing at the start.

Every AED figure on this page is attributed to the provider or rate table that published it, so a parent can check it rather than take it on trust. Most pages in this market publish no price at all, or quote in a currency nobody here transacts in.

Sessions built around the actual school run

The hour a lesson can start is the one thing a Business Bay address genuinely determines. Slots are set after a fortnight of watching what the bus really does, rather than from an optimistic assumption about a 15:30 finish.

Regulation explained, not implied

The permit position, the regulator's role and the academic-honesty rules are set out with their sources so a parent can verify them. IB Gram claims no accreditation from KHDA, the Ministry of Education, the IB or any board, and says so plainly on the page.

Availability stated before you commit

If no Higher Level Chemistry specialist is free at the hour you need, you are told the wait rather than matched to a generalist. Disclosing a coverage limit costs a booking occasionally and saves a wasted term regularly.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Business Bay: your questions answered

How much does IB Chemistry support cost a Business Bay family each month?+

Think in months rather than hours. Bestimate's Dubai 2026 rate table puts a weekly one-hour arrangement at roughly AED 240 to 600 monthly at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year work. Advertised packages in this market include around AED 799 monthly for eight online sessions. Those are market figures from the sources named, not an IB Gram price list. For a Higher Level Chemistry student in the investigation term, two sessions a week is common, so budget towards the specialist band rather than the generalist one.

Is a Chemistry tutor living in Downtown Dubai better placed than one teaching online?+

Not for this subject. Downtown is one bridge from Business Bay and contains no secondary campus either, so a tutor there is no closer to your child's school or syllabus. What matters is whether the person has taught Higher Level Chemistry repeatedly and can name where marks go missing in energetics and the mechanisms. The number of people who can do that within any one Dubai district is small; the number who can do it at seven o'clock Gulf Standard Time over video is much larger. Proximity is a filter that removes specialists without improving the teaching.

My child is in DP1 at a Sobha Hartland school and failing Chemistry tests. Where do we start?+

Start with the marked papers, not the syllabus. Three or four marked tests usually show one pattern rather than general weakness — most often sign errors in energetics, formula use in acid-base work without checking which species is in excess, or mechanism questions answered from memory. A single diagnostic session with those papers in front of the tutor identifies which. From there a short block on that one area, with the same question type revisited a fortnight later, does more than a term of general revision. Do not wait for the next report; reports describe the symptom.

What changed when the Chemistry subject guide was reorganised?+

Content is now grouped under Structure and Reactivity rather than a long list of numbered topics, and the assessment sits on two papers plus the scientific investigation. Paper 1 is split into a multiple-choice part and a data-analysis part that behave quite differently. The practical effect for a student is that questions more often require two ideas taught months apart to be combined, which is why recall-based revision stops working around the middle of DP1. Confirm the exact component structure, durations and weightings with your school's IB coordinator, who holds the authoritative current version.

How are Paper 1A and Paper 1B different, and does that change revision?+

Completely, and yes. Paper 1A is multiple choice across the whole course and rewards secure recall at speed. Paper 1B presents unfamiliar experimental data and rewards the ability to read a table, spot what is being varied, handle uncertainty and draw a defensible inference. Students who revise only by topic prepare for 1A and walk into 1B cold. The fix is to practise 1B as its own skill, timed, on data the student has never seen, several times before the mock rather than in the fortnight before the exam.

Does Higher Level Chemistry need more maths than my child currently has?+

It needs confident logarithms, rearrangement and proportional reasoning rather than advanced mathematics. Students on Mathematics Analysis and Approaches usually have that already. Students on Applications and Interpretation can take Chemistry at Higher Level comfortably, but the logarithm work that appears in pH and rate questions has to be covered somewhere, and the school's maths course may not reach it at the right moment. One or two sessions on that specific arithmetic, early in DP1, prevents a recurring loss of marks that otherwise looks like a chemistry problem.

How many marks is the Chemistry scientific investigation worth, and who marks it?+

It is a 24-mark task assessed against four published criteria — research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation — marked by the school and moderated by the IB. It carries a fifth of the final grade, which puts it level with a written paper. Most of the mark is effectively decided by the research question: one that is narrow enough to measure sets up every later criterion, while one that is too broad produces data nobody can analyse. Confirm the internal deadline with the school early, because it usually falls in a term that is already crowded.

May a tutor suggest the research question for my child's investigation?+

No. The research question is part of what is being assessed, so supplying it is not help, it is substitution. A tutor may ask what the student is actually measuring, point out that a variable cannot be controlled, question whether the proposed range will produce usable data, and give feedback on a question the student has drafted. The student writes the question, the method, the analysis, the conclusion and the evaluation. Ask any provider to state that boundary in writing before the investigation term begins; providers who will not are telling you something.

Organic mechanisms are where my child collapses. Can that be repaired before the exams?+

Usually, because the failure is narrower than it looks. Most students have memorised mechanism diagrams rather than learned to decide which species is electron-rich and which is electron-poor, so they reproduce the case they memorised and fail every variant. Repair means working marked mechanism questions one at a time, naming the decision at each arrow, and returning to the same question type a fortnight later to confirm it holds. Four to six focused sessions typically shift this, provided the work is on marked past-paper questions rather than on re-reading notes.

How late can a Chemistry session start on a Business Bay school night?+

In term time a Business Bay student is usually home between 15:45 and 16:30, so a 17:30 start works for most families and 18:00 is comfortable. Students commuting from the Jumeirah direction return later and tend to settle on 18:30. Because lessons are online there is no travel to add at either end, which is the practical advantage of this district: the slot is set by the bus, not by a tutor's driving time. Hold a slightly later slot for the first fortnight and pull it earlier once you know what the route really does.

Do Chemistry lessons move during Ramadan for families here?+

Yes, and the shift should be planned rather than improvised. School days shorten, so an earlier afternoon slot becomes possible, and many families prefer to move a session to after iftar instead. Both work for online delivery because nothing depends on a tutor travelling. The point worth planning is the revision calendar rather than the clock: if the examination series falls close to or after Ramadan, the heavy past-paper work should be front-loaded into the weeks before it rather than squeezed into a month when concentration is genuinely harder.

Does a private Chemistry tutor in Dubai need a permit, and how do I check?+

Yes. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, free of charge, for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. Ask the tutor to show you the permit. Anyone quoting you a fee for it is describing something other than the official route, and anyone quoting a specific fine amount is guessing, because no fine schedule has been published.

Does my child need Higher Level Chemistry to apply for medicine from Dubai?+

Requirements are set by each university and vary by country, so the only reliable answer comes from the admissions page of the universities your child is actually considering. Many medical programmes in the United Kingdom and elsewhere expect Chemistry at Higher Level, and some specify a minimum grade; others accept different combinations. Check each one directly and early, in DP1 rather than DP2, because the subject choice is difficult to reverse after the first term. Tutoring does not change an entry requirement and nobody should suggest that it does.

What happens if no Higher Level Chemistry specialist is free at our hour?+

You are told. Coverage for a narrow Higher Level subject at one specific weekday hour is not guaranteed, and the honest options are a different slot, a short wait for a named specialist, or a different weekday. What should not happen is being matched to a general science tutor described as a Chemistry specialist, which costs a family four sessions before anyone admits it. Most providers in this market publish no coverage limit at all; asking directly what happens when nobody is available is a fair test of any of them.

Which schools do Business Bay Chemistry students usually attend?+

There is no secondary campus inside Business Bay, so students travel. The commonest directions are the creek side towards Sobha Hartland and Al Jaddaf, where schools such as Hartland International, North London Collegiate School Dubai and Swiss International Scientific School sit; the Al Barsha and Al Khail corridor; and the Jumeirah and Al Safa route along Al Wasl Road. Those schools are named as context for the school run only — no affiliation or endorsement is implied. All of them teach Chemistry from the same international subject guide, which is the point.

Start with a marked paper and a free trial lesson

An IB Chemistry tutor in Business Bay is not a geography problem. It is a question of whether the person teaching your child has taught this course enough times to know where its marks go, and whether they will be honest about the investigation boundary and the availability. Send the most recent marked paper and the school's topic order, book a free trial lesson at an hour that survives the bus, and judge the diagnosis you get back. Lessons run live online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time. No grade is promised and no accreditation is claimed.
