IGCSE Science Tutor in Business Bay

An IGCSE science tutor in Business Bay has to begin with one piece of paper: the entry slip that names the syllabus code your child is sitting. Biology, Chemistry and Physics are three separate qualifications with three separate codes, and the double award is a fourth thing again. IB Gram matches Business Bay families to a tutor who teaches the specific code, live online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Taught against the syllabus code on the entry slip, not a generic course
  • Multiple choice, theory and practical components revised separately
  • Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel structures handled as different exams
  • Past papers worked under timed conditions from the first month

IB & IGCSE in Business Bay

Three sciences, several codes, and one entry slip that settles it

IGCSE science is not one subject. A Business Bay student in Year 10 may be sitting three separate qualifications, or a double award counted as two, or a single award counted as one, and the paper structure differs in every case. Before anything useful can be planned, somebody has to look at the entry slip or the school's option sheet and read the code. Cambridge Biology, Chemistry and Physics carry the codes 0610, 0620 and 0625; the Cambridge double award is 0654 and the combined single award 0653. Pearson Edexcel runs 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1, with 4SD0 as the double award.

That is not pedantry. The two boards build their papers differently. Cambridge tiers the written papers into Core and Extended, so a student entered at Core cannot access the top grades no matter how well they perform, and it assesses practical work through a separate paper — either a practical test or the alternative-to-practical written paper. Pearson Edexcel does not tier the International GCSE sciences and assesses practical skills inside the written papers instead. A tutor who does not know which of those two worlds your child is in will teach the wrong exam technique for a term.

This page is written from the subject outward rather than from the neighbourhood inward, because the syllabus is what decides the grade. Below you will find the component structure for each board, the places Extended-tier marks genuinely disappear, what the practical component asks of a student who is taught online, how the two examination series a UAE candidate sits are actually spaced, and the past-paper sequence that moves a science grade in the final two terms. Business Bay comes into it only where it affects the clock.

On that point: Business Bay has towers and a canal and no secondary school campus. Every pupil here commutes out, usually towards Sobha Hartland, Al Jaddaf, Al Quoz, Al Barsha or Jumeirah, and returns in the late afternoon. Lessons are delivered live online, one-to-one, over video, which means the school run sets the start time and nothing else has to be negotiated. IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we offer only in India. The phrase parents search is often a home tutor, and the honest answer is the comparison rather than a promise nobody intends to keep.

A word on what this page will not do. It will not tell you your child needs tutoring, because plenty of Year 10 students do not. It will not quote an IB Gram price list, because the honest starting point is a free trial lesson and a conversation about what a marked paper shows. And it will not hand you an examination date, because dates are revised and the board publishes the live timetable. What it will do is give you the structure of your child's actual qualification, the places marks are lost in it, the market rates with the source that published each one, and the questions worth asking before any money changes hands.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three stages matter to a Business Bay science family: the lower secondary years that build the arithmetic, the two IGCSE years themselves, and the post-16 route the science grades lead into.

KS3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Lower secondary science, Years 7 to 9

Science is usually taught as one subject with topics rotating between biology, chemistry and physics. The content is not the problem; the arithmetic is. Students who reach Year 10 unable to rearrange a formula, convert units or read a scale confidently lose marks in every science paper afterwards, and the loss is misdiagnosed as a science weakness for the next two years.

Dubai schools on the UK curriculum often run Cambridge Lower Secondary and its Checkpoint tests, which are available in March, May and October. Those results are the earliest honest signal a Business Bay parent gets about whether triple science in Year 10 is realistic, and they arrive while there is still time to act on them.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

International GCSE, Years 10 and 11

Two years ending in externally marked papers. A student takes either three separate sciences, a double award counted as two subjects, or a single combined award. Cambridge entries are tiered between Core and Extended; Pearson Edexcel entries are not. Grades are reported 9 to 1 or A* to G depending on the board and syllabus, and the school chooses the tier, usually in Year 11.

For the UAE Ministry of Education's British equivalency route, a student must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at no less than grade E or grade 3, and Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among those five. Science subjects are therefore doing heavy lifting in that count, which is one reason a dropped science matters more here than families expect.

POST-16Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

A Level and IB Diploma routes

Most Dubai schools split after Year 11 into International A Levels or the IB Diploma. Science grades at IGCSE are what gate entry to a science at the next level, and schools typically want a strong Extended-tier grade before admitting a student to A Level Chemistry or Higher Level sciences in the Diploma.

Business Bay families often attend schools that offer one route and not the other, so the IGCSE science grade can decide which school a child continues at as well as which subjects they take. That makes Year 11 science a decision about the next two years rather than a single certificate, and it changes how much support is worth buying in the spring term.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the science and adjacent courses a Business Bay student most often needs help with, and what each one actually assesses rather than what it is called.

Biology

Cambridge 0610 · Pearson 4BI1 · Core and Extended

Content-heavy and deceptively easy to revise badly. Marks concentrate in the explain and describe distinction, in transport and exchange topics where diagrams carry the answer, and in genetics questions requiring a worked cross rather than a remembered rule.

Chemistry

Cambridge 0620 · Pearson 4CH1 · Core and Extended

The most procedural of the three. Moles, concentration and reacting-mass calculations account for a large share of Extended-tier loss, and the organic section rewards students who can write a general formula rather than recall one example.

Physics

Cambridge 0625 · Pearson 4PH1 · Core and Extended

Algebra in disguise. Electricity circuits and the kinematics graphs are where Extended students most often stall, and almost all of the loss traces back to rearranging and substituting rather than to the physics itself.

Co-ordinated and Combined Sciences

Cambridge 0654 and 0653 · Pearson 4SD0

The double and single award routes. Content is reduced rather than easier, and the papers still demand the same command-term discipline. A student moved onto a double award in Year 11 needs the overlap mapped carefully or revises content that is no longer examined.

Mathematics

Cambridge 0580 · Pearson 4MA1 · Foundation and Higher

The quiet cause of most science mark loss. Rearrangement, standard form, ratio and graph reading appear in every science paper, and repairing them once improves three subjects at the same time rather than one.

Additional Mathematics

Cambridge 0606

Taken by stronger Year 11 students, often alongside triple science, as a bridge to A Level Maths. Useful context for a tutor to know about, because it competes for the same evening hours as science revision in the spring term.

English as a Second Language

Cambridge 0510 and 0511

Relevant to science because six-mark questions are marked on written communication as well as content. Students with strong recall and weak written structure lose marks that look like science gaps and are not.

Computer Science

Cambridge 0478 · Pearson 4CP0

A common fourth option alongside the sciences. Shares the habit of precise, stepwise explanation that science extended-response questions reward, which is why students who do well in one often improve in the other.

Arabic as an additional language

All levels, Dubai mandatory

Mandatory in every Dubai private school whatever the licensed curriculum, and taught in separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students. It occupies timetable hours that a science-heavy option block would otherwise use, which is worth knowing when planning revision weeks.

Islamic Education and Social Studies

All levels, Dubai mandatory

Also mandatory under the emirate's requirements, with the language of instruction set by whether the student is Arab or non-Arab. Business Bay parents planning a triple-science revision schedule should count these hours in before assuming the week has room.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways science support is usually bought in this corridor, all delivered live online over video, one-to-one unless stated otherwise.

Single-science weekly support

One subject, one fixed weekly session, running a week ahead of the school's topic order so the lesson pre-teaches rather than repairs. The most common arrangement for a Year 10 student whose other two sciences are secure, and the cheapest way to stop one subject dragging a triple-science profile down.

  • Taught against the exact syllabus code
  • A timed past-paper question every session from month two
  • Written note after each lesson naming one target

Triple-science review block

A shorter arrangement covering all three sciences across a term, usually one subject a week in rotation. Suited to a student whose problem is examination technique rather than content, because the command terms and six-mark structure transfer directly between the three papers.

  • Rotates Biology, Chemistry and Physics weekly
  • Shared work on command terms and extended response
  • Arithmetic repair done once rather than three times

Final-series past-paper sprint

Eight to twelve weeks of timed paper work before the series, sequenced from a marked mock rather than from a syllabus checklist. Multiple choice, theory and the practical component are rehearsed separately because they reward different habits and mixing them wastes the sprint.

  • Starts from marked mock papers, not a topic list
  • Alternative-to-practical rehearsed as its own paper
  • Mark-scheme wording drilled until it is automatic

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Business Bay

01

Find the syllabus code before you buy a single lesson

  • Get the statement of entry from the school, not a verbal answer
  • Cambridge: 0610, 0620, 0625, 0654, 0653
  • Pearson Edexcel: 4BI1, 4CH1, 4PH1, 4SD0
  • Confirm the tier as well as the code; Cambridge Core caps the grade
  • Past papers must come from the examined board and nowhere else

The first useful act is administrative. Ask the school's examinations officer, or look at the statement of entry, for the exact syllabus codes your child is entered for and the tier against each. A Business Bay parent who does this before booking anything has already made the single most valuable decision available, because every later choice follows from it: which papers, which tier, whether a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper, how many subjects the science block counts as.

Cambridge separates its sciences into Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620 and Physics 0625, with Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 as a double award and Combined Science 0653 as a single. Pearson Edexcel runs Biology 4BI1, Chemistry 4CH1 and Physics 4PH1, with Science Double Award 4SD0. These are not interchangeable. The command-term conventions differ, the paper durations differ, the way practical skills are examined differs, and the published past papers a student should be working through are entirely different documents.

The commonest avoidable error in this market is a tutor who teaches generic science and hands a student past papers from the wrong board. It costs nothing to prevent and cannot be undone in the final term. Insist on the code in the first conversation, and watch whether the person you are speaking to recognises it immediately. A specialist will tell you what Paper 6 is before you have finished the sentence; a generalist will ask you to send more details.

One more reason to start here: the code tells you how many subjects the science block is worth. Triple science counts as three, the double award as two, the single combined award as one. That arithmetic feeds straight into the five-subject count the UAE Ministry of Education's British equivalency route requires, and families who discover the difference in Year 11 have very little room left to change it.

02

The two boards build the same subject differently

The table below compares the structures a Business Bay student will meet. The important differences are tiering and practical assessment. Cambridge single sciences are tiered: a Core entry sits a different multiple-choice paper and a different theory paper from an Extended entry, and the grade accessible at Core is capped. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences are not tiered, so every candidate sits the same papers and the full grade range is open to all of them.

Practical work is the second fork. In the Cambridge single sciences the practical component is a separate paper, and most schools in this corridor enter candidates for the alternative-to-practical written paper rather than the laboratory practical test. That paper asks a student to read an unfamiliar method, criticise apparatus choices, record results into a prepared table and identify sources of error. It is a learnable paper and it is routinely under-prepared because it does not look like the rest of the course.

Pearson Edexcel assesses practical skills inside the written papers instead, which spreads the same demand across the whole examination rather than concentrating it. Neither approach is easier. What matters is that a student knows which one they are facing by the autumn of Year 11, and that the past papers in front of them match. Confirm the current component structure, durations and weightings for your child's code with the school, because specifications are revised and the school holds the authoritative version.

A practical consequence for Business Bay families specifically: a single apartment block here can contain candidates from both boards, because children commute in several directions to different schools. Comparing notes with a neighbour is therefore unreliable advice. The only authority on your child's papers is your child's own school.

Component by component: where the marks sit in a Cambridge science

For a Cambridge single science the grade is built from three unequal pieces, and most students revise as though it were one. The multiple-choice paper carries roughly thirty per cent, the theory paper roughly half, and the practical component the remaining fifth. Those proportions change what good revision looks like. A student who has spent four months making content notes has prepared for one of the three.

The multiple-choice paper rewards speed and precision in equal measure. Its distractors are built from the specific misconceptions examiners know students hold, so a student who is almost right picks the wrong option confidently. Drilling it is not glamorous and it is the highest-yield hour available in the final month. The theory paper rewards command-term discipline: state, describe, explain and suggest want different things, and the mark scheme awards nothing for a correct answer to a different question.

The practical component is the one most Business Bay families ignore until February of Year 11. It carries the same weight as a fifth of the grade and it is the most learnable of the three, because the question types repeat: identify the dependent variable, explain why a particular apparatus was chosen, state a source of error that is not human error, suggest an improvement that is actually measurable. Six timed attempts under feedback usually moves this paper more than six weeks of content revision moves the other two.

A short note on mocks. School mocks carry no weight with the board, but they are the only evidence a tier decision gets made on, and they are often written to test recall rather than to mirror the real paper. Read the mock paper itself, not just the mark, and ask whether it included a practical-paper section at all.

Where Extended-tier science marks actually disappear

  • Chemistry: balanced equation before any mass or concentration calculation
  • Physics: decide what is constant before touching a circuit question
  • Biology: draw the genetic cross rather than recall the ratio
  • All three: extended response as a sequence, not a list of true facts
  • All three: units on every line, rounding only at the end

The losses are specific and they repeat across cohorts. In Chemistry the mole is the gate: students who can recite the relationship between mass, moles and molar mass still lose marks on reacting-mass and concentration questions because they do not write a balanced equation first. In Physics it is rearrangement under pressure, and the circuit questions where a student must decide what is constant before anything else. In Biology it is the describe-versus-explain distinction, and genetics questions answered from a remembered ratio rather than a drawn cross.

Across all three, the single largest avoidable loss is the extended-response question. A student who knows the content writes four true sentences and earns two marks, because the mark scheme wanted a sequence: cause, mechanism, consequence, in that order, with the technical term named. This is a writing problem living inside a science paper, and it is fixed by marking the student's own answers against the published scheme until they can predict the mark before they are told it.

The second largest is unit and significant-figure discipline. It is trivially fixable and it is routinely ignored because it feels like carelessness rather than a skill. In a timed paper it is a skill. A student who converts centimetres to metres automatically, writes the unit on every line and rounds only at the end stops donating the two or three marks a grade boundary usually turns on.

A final, unglamorous category: questions left blank. In a timed paper students skip a question intending to return, and then do not. Teaching a student to write the first line of every question before returning to any of them recovers marks that no amount of content revision would have found.

05

The two series a UAE science candidate sits, counted backwards

A Business Bay candidate sits the June series or the November series. The February/March series exists but is offered to India only, and a tutor or page that hands a UAE family spring dates is giving them a timetable for another country. That matters because entry deadlines sit months before the papers, and a family acting on the wrong calendar misses a deadline it cannot recover.

Pearson Edexcel publishes its International GCSE timetables in advance: the November 2026 final timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026, with results reaching students in January — the November 2025 results landed with students on 22 January 2026. For the summer, June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026. Pearson also publishes provisional timetables well ahead of a series, which is precisely why any date should be read from the live official timetable rather than from a tutoring page.

Cambridge adds a complication worth knowing about. Every examination centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong one. Ask your school which zone it sits in, then read that zone's timetable. The table below counts a series backwards so the work lands before the deadline rather than after it.

How a science is taught online when the laboratory is at school

  • Examined practical skills are paper skills, not laboratory skills
  • Mark scheme opened in the same view as the student's own answer
  • Error-analysis phrasing rehearsed until it earns marks
  • No travel either side of a weeknight session

Parents reasonably ask how a practical subject works over video. The answer is that the laboratory work is the school's job and the examined practical skills are not laboratory skills. What the practical paper actually tests is reading a method, choosing apparatus with a reason, recording results into a sensible table, identifying a genuine source of error and proposing an improvement that could be measured. Every one of those is a paper skill and all of them are better taught on a screen where the method and the mark scheme can sit side by side.

In a session that means the tutor shares the question, the student fills the results table themselves, and then the published mark scheme is opened and compared line by line. The student sees why their source of error earned nothing — human error, read the scale wrongly, not enough time — and what phrasing the examiner accepts instead. That loop is impossible to run from the back of a classroom with thirty students and it is routine one-to-one.

The same logic applies to the content papers. Screen sharing puts a past-paper question, the student's working and the mark scheme in one view, which is how a student learns to predict their own mark. Business Bay families get a second practical benefit: no travel at either end of a weeknight, which in this district means a session can start at 17:30 after a late bus and still finish before homework. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai, and the comparison below is why that is not a compromise.

07

What science tuition costs in this corridor, cheapest first

Start at the bottom of the market, because that is where most families start and it is where the money is most often wasted. Tutopiya advertises online tuition from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65. At that level you are usually buying homework supervision from a university student. For a Year 10 student who simply is not doing the work, that can be exactly right. For an Extended-tier candidate losing marks on the mole concept, it is money spent on company rather than teaching.

The next band up is a qualified subject tutor working online: Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 an hour and IB from AED 200. Above that sit named IB and IGCSE specialists at roughly AED 200 to 450 and beyond, with TutorChase at AED 270 and Bestimate's rate table giving 200 to 450 or more. In-home one-to-one visits including travel are quoted at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate and as high as AED 500 by independent home tutors, and monthly in-home packages of AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour visits circulate in this market. At the top end BartyED publishes AED 650.

All of those are market figures attributed to the providers who published them; none of them is an IB Gram price. Read the spread as a question about what each extra hundred dirhams buys. From AED 50 to AED 150 it buys subject knowledge. From AED 150 to AED 270 it buys diagnosis — someone who can look at a marked paper and name the specific failure. From AED 270 to AED 500 for an in-home visit it buys travel, which changes nothing a student writes in an examination. Begin with the free trial lesson and judge the first marked piece of work rather than the rate card.

Equivalency, the permit, and the honest limits

  • Five IGCSE subjects at grade 3 or E minimum for the British route
  • Arabic and Islamic education are excluded from that count of five
  • No sourced IB points figure exists; verify on the Ministry's own pages
  • The MoHRE permit is free for two years; ask to see it
  • No office in the UAE, no board accreditation, no grade promises

Science grades carry weight beyond the next school. For the UAE Ministry of Education's British equivalency route a student must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, and Arabic and Islamic education are not included among those five. One page currently ranking in this market tells UAE parents they need six IGCSE subjects; the sourced figure is five. For the post-16 stage the same route requires one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or better, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade.

No IB points threshold for equivalency is published in the sources available here, so any figure a tutoring page gives you for the Diploma route should be checked against the Ministry's own pages before you act on it. Equivalency is also not something a tutoring service performs or guarantees; it is a process you complete with the authority, and tutoring is not a requirement for it. Anyone implying otherwise is manufacturing urgency.

On the permit: private tutoring in the UAE requires the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years, with eligibility extending to registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. Ask to see it. IB Gram holds no accreditation or partnership with KHDA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge or Pearson, operates no office in the UAE, and does not write any part of a student's coursework or assessed work.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Business Bay

Business Bay students travel for school, and the direction they travel shapes which board they are sitting. These are the districts and clusters the entry slips come from.

Business Bay

Towers either side of the canal, no secondary campus. Pupils commute in every direction, so a single street here can hold Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel candidates in the same science subject.

Downtown Dubai

Also campus-free and reaching the same schools. Families here face the same late-afternoon return and the same split between boards, which is why a tutor must ask for the code rather than assume it.

Al Jaddaf and Culture Village

Creek-side pockets with one IB continuum school and otherwise an outward commute. Students from here often sit the double award rather than triple science because of option-block timing.

Sobha Hartland

Two established schools inside the community, both running a British curriculum through Year 11. The commonest source of Extended-tier Cambridge science entries in this corridor.

Al Quoz and Al Quoz 4

Mixed residential and industrial with several schools nearby, including Indian-curriculum options. Families switching a child into IGCSE from CBSE often come from here, and the science content map differs sharply.

Meydan and Nad Al Sheba

Villa communities with longer runs in both directions. Science sessions here usually settle at a weekend morning plus one weeknight rather than two weeknights.

Al Barsha and the Al Khail corridor

The second direction a Business Bay bus turns, with several large British-curriculum schools. A high proportion of Pearson Edexcel International GCSE science entries come from this cluster.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the statement of entry and a marked paper

The syllabus codes, the tier and one marked science paper are enough to plan from. That combination tells a tutor which board's past papers to use, whether a practical or alternative-to-practical paper is coming, and which of the classic loss points this particular student has.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson against the real paper

A full session with the specialist you would keep, worked on a past-paper question from your child's own board. The tutor marks it against the published scheme in front of you and names the specific failure, so you can judge the diagnosis rather than the sales pitch.

  3. 03

    Decide subjects and components

Triple science rarely needs three tutors. The plan states which sciences get sessions, which components get priority, and where shared work on command terms and arithmetic will cover all three at once, so the hours go where the marks are.

  4. 04

Weekly sessions with timed paper work

From the second month, every session includes at least one question done to time and marked against the scheme. The written note afterwards records the mark, the error and the one target for next week, which is what makes progress visible between reports.

  5. 05

Rebuild the plan after the mock

A marked mock in January is the honest checkpoint for a June series. The plan is reset around it, usually by adding timed practical-paper work and dropping content that is now secure, and sometimes by advising that paid support is no longer needed.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The code comes first

No lesson is planned before the syllabus code and tier are confirmed from the school's own entry information. It is the cheapest safeguard in this market and the error it prevents — past papers from the wrong board — cannot be undone in the final term.

Components taught as separate skills

Multiple choice, theory and the practical paper reward different habits and are rehearsed separately. A student who has only made content notes has prepared for one of the three, which is why mock results so often surprise families in January.

Marked against the published scheme, in view

The student's own answer and the mark scheme sit side by side on screen until the student can predict their own mark. That loop is what turns four true sentences into a four-mark answer, and it is difficult to run any other way.

The right series, never the wrong one

UAE candidates sit June and November. The February/March series is offered to India only, and we do not put spring dates in front of a Dubai family. Exact dates are read from the board's live timetable, by Cambridge zone where that applies.

Rates quoted with their sources

Every AED figure here is attributed to the provider or rate table that published it. Three of six ranking pages in this market publish no price at all and two quote in US dollars, a currency Dubai families do not transact in.

Limits stated before you commit

If no specialist for a particular code and tier is free at your hour, you are told the wait rather than handed a generalist. Lessons are online only in the UAE, no grade is promised, and no part of a student's assessed work is written for them.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Business Bay: your questions answered

Do Business Bay families usually choose triple science or the double award?+

Both are common and the choice is made by the school's option blocks as much as by the student. Triple science counts as three subjects and is the usual route for anyone considering a science at A Level or Higher Level later. The double award counts as two and reduces content without reducing the command-term demand, which suits a student carrying a heavy option block or a language. The decision matters for the equivalency count as well, since five subjects at grade 3 or above are required for the British route. Ask the school which blocks allow which combination before assuming a preference is available.

What is the alternative-to-practical paper and how should we prepare for it?+

It is the written paper Cambridge candidates sit in place of a laboratory practical test, and it carries roughly a fifth of a single-science grade. It asks a student to read an unfamiliar method, justify apparatus choices, record results into a prepared table, identify a real source of error and suggest a measurable improvement. The question types repeat year on year, which makes it the most learnable component in the subject and the most under-prepared. Six timed attempts marked against the published scheme generally moves this paper further than six weeks of content revision moves the theory paper.

Where do Business Bay parents find the science syllabus code their child sits?+

Ask the school's examinations officer for the statement of entry, or check the option sheet issued at the start of Year 10. It lists the board, the syllabus code and the tier for each subject. Cambridge sciences are 0610, 0620 and 0625, with 0654 and 0653 for the double and single awards; Pearson Edexcel uses 4BI1, 4CH1, 4PH1 and 4SD0. Get this in writing rather than verbally, because the tier in particular is sometimes still under discussion, and a Core entry caps the grade a student can reach however well they perform.

How do Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel science papers differ in structure?+

Cambridge tiers its single sciences into Core and Extended, sets a dedicated multiple-choice paper and examines practical skills in a separate paper, usually the alternative-to-practical. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences are untiered, have no separate multiple-choice paper, and assess practical skills inside the written papers. Neither is easier. The practical consequence is that the examination technique, the timing drills and the past papers are different documents, so a tutor must know the board before the first lesson. Confirm the current structure with your school, which holds the authoritative version of the specification.

Is Year 10 or Year 11 the better point to start science tutoring?+

Year 10, if the aim is a grade rather than a rescue. Year 10 is where the arithmetic habits that determine science marks are either built or missed: rearrangement, units, balanced equations, reading a scale. Repairing those early improves all three sciences at once and costs far fewer hours than fixing them in the spring of Year 11 while also revising content. Starting in Year 11 is still worth doing, but the work becomes triage, focused on the components with the fastest return — the multiple-choice drilling and the practical paper rather than broad content coverage.

My child understands the content but loses marks on six-mark questions. Why?+

Because an extended-response question is marked as a sequence, not as a collection of true statements. The scheme typically wants cause, then mechanism, then consequence, with the technical term named at the right point. A student who writes four accurate sentences in the wrong order earns two marks and leaves the examination believing they answered it. The repair is mechanical: the student answers, then marks their own work against the published scheme, then rewrites. After eight or ten of those they start predicting the mark before being told it, which is the point at which the problem is solved.

What does the Extended tier add that the Core tier leaves out?+

Extended covers additional content and, more importantly, asks questions that combine two ideas rather than testing one. It also opens the full grade range: a Core entry is capped, so a student who outperforms the tier cannot be rewarded for it. Schools usually decide the tier in Year 11 on the evidence of mock results. If you believe your child has been entered too cautiously, ask for the tier decision in writing with the evidence behind it, and ask when the final entry deadline falls, because after it the decision cannot be changed.

When do science candidates in Dubai actually sit their written papers?+

In the June series or the November series. The February/March series is offered to India only and does not apply to a UAE candidate. Pearson's November 2026 International GCSE timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026, and November results reach students in January — the November 2025 results arrived with students on 22 January 2026. June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students the following day. Read the exact dates from the board's live official timetable, because provisional timetables are published early and can be revised.

How do we check the correct Cambridge exam timetable for our school?+

Ask the school which administrative zone it is allocated to. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six zones and states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for that zone, and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong one. The zone affects the dates and times papers are sat. Once you have the zone, read the timetable from Cambridge's own exam administration pages rather than from a tutoring site, and check it again closer to the series in case of revisions.

Should we book one tutor for all three sciences or a specialist for each?+

Often yes at IGCSE level, and it can be the better arrangement. A single tutor sees the shared failures — unit discipline, extended-response structure, rearrangement — and fixes them once rather than three times, and keeps one view of where the student's revision time is going. Where a student is close to a grade boundary in one subject with specific content gaps, a subject specialist for that one science alongside a generalist for the other two is usually more efficient. The honest answer depends on whether the problem is technique, which transfers, or content, which does not.

How many weekly sessions does triple science realistically need?+

Through Year 10, one session a week rotating between the three sciences is enough for most students, because the work at that stage is habit-building rather than content coverage. Through the spring of Year 11, families carrying real content gaps commonly move to two sessions a week, with one reserved for timed paper work across all three subjects. More than two a week rarely helps, because the limiting factor becomes the student's own practice time rather than teaching hours, and a tutor who recommends four should explain what the student will stop doing to make room.

Does online science tutoring work when the laboratory is at school?+

Yes, because the examined practical skills are paper skills. The practical component tests whether a student can read a method, justify an apparatus choice, record results properly, identify a genuine source of error and propose a measurable improvement. Those are taught best with the question, the student's own answer and the mark scheme visible together, which is exactly what screen sharing provides. The actual laboratory work remains the school's responsibility. Business Bay families get a second benefit: no travel at either end of a weeknight, so a session can start soon after the bus arrives.

Does a science tutor for a Business Bay student need to be in Dubai?+

No, and insisting on it narrows the field for no gain. The syllabus is set by Cambridge or Pearson and is identical wherever it is taught, so what matters is whether the tutor has taught that specific code and tier repeatedly. Timing matters more than location: a tutor must be able to teach at a Gulf Standard Time hour that fits after the Business Bay school run. IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai in any case — home visits are an India-only service — so every UAE lesson is live online and the tutor's own address is irrelevant to it.

How many IGCSE subjects count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

The sourced British-track requirement is five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, and Arabic and Islamic education are not included among those five. At the post-16 stage the same route asks for one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or above, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. A page currently ranking in this market states six subjects; the sourced figure is five. Verify on the Ministry's own pages before acting, and note that equivalency is a process you complete with the authority.

Does a private science tutor in Dubai need a permit from MoHRE?+

Yes. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation free of charge for two years, applied for through its app, website and e-services. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. Those tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no fine schedule is published, so treat any specific amount you are quoted as unverified.

Start with the entry slip, then book a trial lesson

Everything useful about IGCSE science support begins with the syllabus code and the tier. Get those from the school in writing, send one marked paper alongside them, and book a free trial lesson with a tutor who recognises the code before you finish the sentence. Lessons run live online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time, scheduled around when the Business Bay bus actually arrives. Market rates on this page are attributed to whoever published them. No grade is promised, no board accreditation is claimed, and no part of a student's assessed work is written for them.
