IB Maths Tutor in Business Bay

An IB maths tutor in Business Bay has four possible jobs, not one. Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, each at Higher or Standard Level, with different papers, different weightings and a Higher Level Paper 3 that exists in both courses and is understood by almost nobody outside the classroom. IB Gram matches your child to a tutor who teaches that exact course, one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time and scheduled after the drive back to the canal.

  • Matched to AA or AI at the exact level, not to maths in general
  • Paper 1, Paper 2 and Higher Level Paper 3 taught as separate skills
  • Exploration coached against the published criteria, never written for a student
  • Sessions from 4.30pm to 9pm Gulf Standard Time

IB & IGCSE in Business Bay

Four courses wearing one name, and why the match has to be exact

Parents searching for an IB maths tutor in Business Bay are usually searching for a single thing. There are four. Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation each run at Higher and Standard Level, and the four combinations are not variations in difficulty of one course. They assess different content, weight their papers differently, and reward different habits of working. A tutor who teaches Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level confidently may be of limited use to a student sitting Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, and the student will not be able to tell for several weeks.

This page is written from the subject rather than from the neighbourhood, because the subject is where the marks are. It sets out the components and their weightings, the five topic areas and the teaching hours each course is built around, the Exploration criteria by letter with the marks attached, and the mark-scheme notation that decides whether a half-right answer scores two marks or none. That last item is the one families almost never see, and it changes how a student writes a solution within about three sessions.

Business Bay matters to the logistics rather than the mathematics. There is no IB school inside the district, so every Diploma student living in the towers along the Dubai Water Canal commutes out, most often towards Sobha Hartland, Al Jaddaf, Al Quoz or Al Barsha. A 3.15pm school finish with a canal crossing in it means a realistic session start of 4.30pm. We schedule after that, not into it, because a Higher Level Paper 3 question is not a thing to attempt from the back seat of a car.

On delivery, we are direct. IB Gram teaches UAE families one-to-one over live video. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, and we do not operate a centre you can drive to; home visiting is a service we run only in India. For mathematics specifically this is close to an advantage rather than a concession, because written working shared live on a whiteboard is visible to the tutor as it forms, which is exactly where mark-scheme errors are caught. A photograph of finished working sent afterwards shows the answer and hides the mistake.

Everything below carries its source where it is a regulatory or market fact, and flags itself where it is not verified. IB assessment detail should be confirmed against the current subject guide held by your child's school, because the IB revises its guides on a cycle and ibo.org does not permit automated checking. Where this page gives a figure that could not be verified from an official source, it says so instead of guessing. No examination date and no results date for any IB session appears anywhere on this page, for that reason alone.

  • Paper 1 is sat without a graphical display calculator in Analysis and Approaches; Paper 2 is not
  • Business Bay has no IB school inside the district; a realistic weeknight start is 4.30pm
  • Lessons are one-to-one over live video, never a home visit anywhere in the UAE
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

An IB maths tutor in Business Bay works across three stages, because the problems that arrive in the Diploma are usually created two years earlier. These are the stages in play for a family in this corridor, with what mathematics specifically requires at each.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme mathematics, Years 12-13

Two years on one of four courses. Standard Level is built around 150 recommended teaching hours and Higher Level around 240, which is where the workload difference becomes concrete rather than rhetorical. Assessment is two written papers at Standard Level and three at Higher Level, plus the Exploration at 20% in every course. Every course covers the same five topic areas with different depth and emphasis.

In Dubai the Diploma sits under KHDA inspection. Business Bay students travel to IB schools across Sobha Hartland, Al Jaddaf and Al Barsha, which means mathematics support has to be scheduled around a commute of twenty to thirty-five minutes in the evening peak. Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds three new International Baccalaureate schools among seven new private schools, widening the local choice.

MYPAges 14-16 · MYP 4-5

Middle Years Programme mathematics, MYP 4-5

Assessed on four criteria rather than by examination, which means an MYP 5 student can hold strong grades and still be unprepared for the algebraic fluency Higher Level assumes. Extended mathematics in MYP 5 is the route that keeps Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level realistic; standard mathematics usually does not. The gap shows up in September of DP1 and is the single most common reason a Business Bay family starts looking for a tutor.

Several schools in the corridor run the MYP through to MYP 5 before the Diploma, so the September transition happens inside the same campus and can be mistaken for continuity. It is not continuous in mathematics: criterion-based coursework and a timed unseen Paper 1 reward different preparation almost entirely.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE into Diploma mathematics

The other route in. Extended tier Cambridge 0580 or Higher tier Pearson Edexcel 4MA1 is the realistic prerequisite for Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, and Additional Mathematics is better preparation still. A Core or Foundation tier candidate entering Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is taking on a two-year course with a one-year algebra deficit, and no quantity of tutoring makes that comfortable.

Business Bay families frequently move between British and IB schools at 16, often for sixth-form reasons. The mathematics consequence is the one to check before the move: confirm with the receiving school which IB maths course the IGCSE tier actually qualifies your child to take, in writing, before accepting a place.

COREAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

The Diploma core alongside mathematics

Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service run alongside the six subjects and compete for the same evenings. Mathematics suffers from this disproportionately because it is the subject where skipped practice compounds silently. A student who stops working problems for three weeks during an Extended Essay push does not notice the loss until a timed Paper 1 arrives.

A mathematics Extended Essay is a legitimate and often strong choice, but it is not a substitute for Exploration work and it does not reduce the Exploration requirement. Both are individual pieces and both have internal school deadlines, which in this corridor tend to cluster in the same term.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The five topic areas every IB maths course covers, plus the components that sit around them. What differs between courses is depth, emphasis and the proportion of each paper, which is why a tutor matched to the wrong course teaches the right mathematics at the wrong level of abstraction.

Number and algebra

AA and AI, HL and SL

Sequences and series, exponents and logarithms, binomial expansion, and at Higher Level complex numbers, proof and matrices depending on course. Marks go missing on log manipulation and on binomial terms where the index is negative or fractional. Algebraic fluency here is the hidden prerequisite for everything in calculus later.

Functions

AA and AI, HL and SL

Domain and range, composite and inverse functions, transformations, quadratics and rational functions. Analysis and Approaches pushes further into algebraic manipulation of functions; Applications and Interpretation leans towards modelling with them. The common error is treating a transformation question as a sketching exercise and losing the algebraic justification marks.

Geometry and trigonometry

AA and AI, HL and SL

Trigonometric identities and equations, radian measure, vectors at Higher Level, and three-dimensional geometry. Radians are the single largest source of silent calculator errors in this topic: a calculator left in degrees produces plausible wrong answers that a student will not flag. Checking calculator mode is a habit, not a skill.

Statistics and probability

AA and AI, HL and SL

Data presentation, regression, probability distributions, the binomial and normal distributions, and at Higher Level hypothesis testing in Applications and Interpretation. This topic carries much more weight in Applications and Interpretation, where statistical technique with a calculator is a core skill rather than a module.

Calculus

AA and AI, HL and SL

Differentiation and integration, kinematics, and at Higher Level in Analysis and Approaches considerably more technique including implicit differentiation, integration by substitution and parts, and differential equations. This is where Higher Level Analysis and Approaches separates decisively from the other three courses in volume of required practice.

Paper 1

40% at SL, 30% at HL

Short and extended response questions. In Analysis and Approaches no graphical display calculator is permitted, which turns algebraic fluency into the whole examination. In Applications and Interpretation a calculator is allowed. Students who revise by working calculator-permitted past papers are preparing for the wrong paper, and this is a surprisingly common waste of a term.

Paper 2

40% at SL, 30% at HL

Calculator permitted in both courses. The failure mode is not inability but accuracy: answers must be given to three significant figures unless otherwise stated, and a correct method followed by an unrounded or over-rounded answer loses the final accuracy mark. This is the cheapest set of marks on any IB maths paper to recover.

Paper 3

Higher Level only, 20%

Two extended problem-solving questions, each building through parts towards an unfamiliar result. It rewards reading the whole question before starting and using earlier parts in later ones, which is a technique rather than knowledge. Students who have never seen a Paper 3 before the examination almost always mismanage the time.

The Exploration

20% in all four courses

An individual written piece of mathematical work, internally assessed and externally moderated, marked on five criteria for a total of twenty marks. It is the component where a tutor's role is most constrained and most useful: criteria explanation and feedback on the student's own draft are legitimate, writing any part of it is not.

Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The course for students heading towards mathematics, engineering, physics, economics at quantitative universities and most medicine routes. It emphasises algebraic manipulation, proof and analytical calculus technique. The Higher Level version is the most demanding of the four by volume of technique required.

Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The course for students heading towards business, social sciences, design, architecture and biology-led routes. It emphasises modelling, statistics and technology use. It is not an easier course; at Higher Level it carries substantial statistical content that Analysis and Approaches students never meet.

Graphical display calculator skills

All courses, Paper 2 and Paper 3

A taught skill treated as incidental by most schemes of work. Solving equations numerically, finding intersections, working with distributions and using regression functions are each worth marks, and students who use the calculator only as an arithmetic device leave those marks behind. Practising the device is practising the subject.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of IB mathematics support that work for a Business Bay family, plus a plain statement of what we do not provide in the UAE. All UAE tuition is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

Weekly one-to-one on one course

Sixty or ninety minutes a week with the same tutor, matched to Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation at the student's exact level. The tutor works from the school's scheme of work and internal deadline calendar, so the session reinforces what is being taught rather than running a parallel syllabus. Written working is shared live on a whiteboard, which is where mark-scheme errors are caught as they happen.

  • Same tutor weekly, matched to one course and one level
  • Follows the school's scheme of work and deadlines
  • Live shared working, not photographs after the fact
  • Free trial lesson before any commitment

Paper-specific intensive blocks

Four to eight weeks aimed at one component. A Paper 1 block in Analysis and Approaches removes the calculator entirely and rebuilds algebraic fluency under time pressure. A Paper 3 block at Higher Level works only extended multi-part problems. A Paper 2 accuracy block targets three-significant-figure discipline and calculator technique, which is often the fastest grade movement available.

  • One component per block, with a defined endpoint
  • Papers worked to time and marked against published notation
  • Paper 1 blocks run calculator-free in Analysis and Approaches
  • Diagnostic output: which marks were lost and under which notation

Exploration process coaching

Structured support on the Exploration that stays inside the IB's academic-honesty boundary. The tutor explains each criterion and what the published descriptors actually reward, discusses whether a proposed topic carries enough mathematics to reach the higher bands, and gives feedback on the student's own draft. The student writes every word and performs every calculation.

  • Criteria explained by letter with the marks attached
  • Topic viability discussed before weeks are invested
  • Feedback on the student's draft, never text supplied
  • Nothing written, completed or edited to completion by the tutor

What we do not offer in the UAE

IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the United Arab Emirates. There is no visit to a Business Bay apartment, no tutor at a tower lobby and no centre to drive to; home visiting is a service we run only in India. We also do not write, complete or edit any part of an Exploration, Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge essay, and we do not supply IB subject guides, past papers or mark schemes as downloads.

  • No in-home visits anywhere in the UAE
  • No UAE office, branch or tuition centre
  • No assessed work written, completed or ghost-edited
  • No grade guarantees and no predicted-score promises

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Business Bay

01

The four courses, component by component

An IB maths tutor in Business Bay has to know which of four courses a student is on before the first problem is worked. Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation each run at Higher and Standard Level. Standard Level is built around 150 recommended teaching hours and Higher Level around 240. Standard Level students sit two written papers; Higher Level students sit three. All four courses include the Exploration at twenty per cent.

The structural consequence is that the same overall grade is reached by different routes. At Standard Level, Paper 1 and Paper 2 each carry forty per cent, so a weakness in one paper can be substantially offset by the other. At Higher Level, Paper 1 and Paper 2 carry thirty per cent each and Paper 3 carries twenty, so the grade is spread across three unfamiliar formats instead of two. A Higher Level student who ignores Paper 3 until the final term has left a fifth of the grade unpractised.

The content consequence is sharper still. In Analysis and Approaches, Paper 1 is sat without a graphical display calculator, so every mark on that paper depends on algebraic manipulation done by hand. In Applications and Interpretation, a calculator is permitted throughout. A student revising Analysis and Approaches by working through calculator-permitted questions is practising a skill that will not be available in the examination hall, and it is a mistake that survives a whole term because the mathematics looks identical on the page.

Confirm your child's course and level against the school's own documentation rather than relying on memory, and confirm every assessment detail in the table below against the current IB subject guide your school holds. The IB revises subject guides on a cycle, ibo.org does not permit automated verification, and this page will not publish an IB examination date or results date that has not been read from an official source.

Reading a mark scheme: M, A, R and the follow-through mark

  • Method marks survive arithmetic errors; a bare wrong answer scores nothing
  • "Hence" is an instruction to use the previous part, not a transition word
  • Three significant figures on calculator papers unless the question says otherwise
  • Follow-through means an early slip need not cost the rest of the question

This is the section that changes a grade fastest and the one no competitor page in this market publishes. IB mathematics mark schemes award marks by type, and a student who does not know the types writes solutions that throw marks away while arriving at correct answers. Method marks reward a correct approach even when the arithmetic fails. Accuracy marks reward the correct value. Reasoning marks reward a stated justification. Follow-through marks allow a later answer to earn credit from an earlier wrong value, provided the subsequent method is sound.

The practical effects are immediate and slightly counterintuitive. A student who writes only a final answer and gets it wrong scores nothing, even where their method was entirely correct, because there is no visible method to award. A student who shows the substitution, makes an arithmetic slip, and continues correctly can score most of the marks available. This is why "show your working" is not a teacher's preference in IB mathematics; it is the mechanism by which partial credit exists at all.

Three rules follow. First, write the method line before the calculator line, always, including on calculator-permitted papers where the temptation to produce only a numeric answer is strongest. Second, when a question says "hence", use the previous part; a correct answer obtained by an independent method can fail to earn the mark the question was testing. Third, on Paper 2 and Paper 3 give answers to three significant figures unless the question states otherwise, because the final accuracy mark is lost to rounding more often than to mathematics.

A tutor can teach this in three or four sessions, and the effect is visible in the next set of marked papers. It is also the clearest demonstration of why a student needs a tutor who has taught their exact course: the notation is shared across IB mathematics, but what counts as a sufficient method line in a Higher Level Paper 3 question is not the same as in a Standard Level Paper 1 question, and only somebody who has marked both knows the difference.

The Exploration, criterion by criterion

  • Five criteria, twenty marks in total; use of mathematics carries the largest share
  • Reflection is not summary; it must say what a result implies and where the model fails
  • Mathematics below the course's level caps the grade regardless of writing quality
  • Topic viability discussed at proposal stage is the cheapest intervention available

Twenty per cent of every IB mathematics grade comes from a single piece of individual written work, and it is assessed on five criteria with different mark allocations. In the current structure, Criterion A covers presentation, Criterion B mathematical communication, Criterion C personal engagement, Criterion D reflection and Criterion E use of mathematics, for a total of twenty marks. Criterion E carries the largest allocation and Criteria C and D the smallest. Confirm the exact current descriptors and allocations with your child's teacher, because the IB revises them.

Where Business Bay students lose Exploration marks is predictable. Criterion E suffers when the mathematics chosen sits below the level of the course: a Higher Level Analysis and Approaches Exploration built on Standard Level statistics cannot reach the upper bands however well written it is. Criterion D suffers because reflection is confused with summary; a paragraph restating what was done earns little, while a paragraph explaining what a result implies and what the model's limitations are earns the band. Criterion C suffers when the topic is generic, because personal engagement has to be visible in the choices made rather than asserted in the introduction.

The single most useful intervention is also the earliest one: a conversation about topic viability before weeks have been spent. A student who has invested four weeks in a topic that cannot support Higher Level mathematics has a problem no amount of writing fixes. Twenty minutes of discussion at the proposal stage routinely saves a month, and it is entirely within the academic-honesty boundary because the question being answered is whether a topic can reach the criteria, not what the student should write.

What a tutor must not do is equally clear. No part of the Exploration may be written, drafted, completed or edited to completion by anybody other than the student. Feedback on a student's own draft is legitimate. Supplying sentences, restructuring the text, or performing the calculations is not. A malpractice finding falls on the student and can cost the Diploma, so this boundary protects your child rather than us. IB Gram will not write any part of an Exploration and will not accept the work if it is offered.

04

Where the marks actually go, topic by topic

  • Six recurring loss points account for most of the gap between effort and grade
  • Four of the six are habits that change within a month of deliberate practice
  • Calculator mode and rounding alone can cost a grade boundary across a paper
  • Ask for a diagnosis against component marks before committing to a term

Diagnosis beats effort in IB mathematics, because the topics that cost marks are a short and stable list. Across the four courses, the recurring losses cluster in six places, and a tutor who starts by identifying which of the six is active can usually plan a term in one session rather than three.

Logarithms and exponents come first. Students can state the laws and cannot apply them in reverse, so an equation requiring a change of base or the combination of two log terms stalls. Second, radian measure: a calculator left in degree mode produces answers that look reasonable and are wrong, and because nothing flags the error, students repeat it across a whole paper. Third, binomial expansion with negative or fractional indices, where the general term is misremembered and the validity condition is omitted.

Fourth, calculus technique at Higher Level Analysis and Approaches, specifically integration by substitution and by parts, where the issue is choosing the substitution rather than executing it. Fifth, probability distributions in Applications and Interpretation, where students know the distribution and misread which tail the question wants. Sixth, and most costly in aggregate, three-significant-figure rounding on Papers 2 and 3, which loses a mark per question without touching the mathematics at all.

The reason this list is useful is that four of the six are habits rather than knowledge. Calculator mode, rounding discipline, writing the method line, and reading which tail is wanted are all behaviours that change inside a month with deliberate practice. Only the calculus technique and the log manipulation require substantial teaching time. A family in Business Bay deciding whether a tutor is worth the money should ask for a diagnosis against this list first, because if the losses are habitual the intervention is short and if they are technical it is a term.

05

AA or AI: the route decision and what it closes

  • Applications and Interpretation is a different course, not an easier one
  • Read the mathematics requirement on each target university's own admissions page
  • Early fluency discomfort is usually an IGCSE or MYP gap, not a course mismatch
  • The window to change course closes within weeks of starting DP1

The choice between Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation is made in DP1 and has consequences in university applications two years later. It is not a difficulty choice, and describing Applications and Interpretation as the easier course is both inaccurate and unhelpful to a Business Bay family trying to decide.

Analysis and Approaches emphasises algebraic manipulation, proof and analytical calculus. It is the course that quantitative degree programmes most often expect, including mathematics, engineering, physics and economics at research universities, and it is the usual expectation for competitive medicine routes. Applications and Interpretation emphasises modelling, statistics and technology use, and is well matched to business, social sciences, design, architecture and biology-led pathways. At Higher Level it carries statistical content that Analysis and Approaches students never encounter.

The decision rule we give families is simple and unglamorous. Identify three or four degree programmes the student might plausibly apply to, read the published mathematics requirement for each on the university's own admissions page, and choose the course that satisfies all of them. Do not choose on which course the student currently finds comfortable, because the comfort gap at the start of DP1 is usually a fluency gap from IGCSE or MYP and is closeable. Do not choose on a teacher's informal advice without checking the requirement in writing.

Changing course after the start of DP1 is possible in some schools and difficult in all of them, and the window closes quickly. If there is doubt, resolve it in the first weeks rather than at the end of the first term. Where a student has already begun Applications and Interpretation and later discovers an engineering ambition, the honest conversation covers foundation-year routes and alternative entry rather than pretending the original requirement can be argued away.

06

The IGCSE and MYP gap that arrives in September

  • MYP criterion assessment does not train timed unseen algebra; the Diploma requires it
  • Extended or Higher tier IGCSE is the realistic prerequisite for HL Analysis and Approaches
  • A Core-tier entrant to HL AA should consider a course change rather than two years of support
  • Six to ten weeks of calculator-free fluency work closes most September gaps

Most Business Bay families who look for an IB maths tutor do so between September and November of DP1, and the reason is almost always the same. The student arrived from MYP 5 or from Year 11 with strong grades and hit Higher Level content that assumes an algebraic fluency their previous course did not require them to demonstrate under time pressure.

From the MYP the mechanism is criterion-based assessment. An MYP 5 student is assessed on four criteria across coursework and tasks, which rewards process, investigation and communication. It does not require repeated timed manipulation of unseen algebra against the clock. A student holding 6s and 7s in MYP mathematics can therefore be genuinely strong and still find a Higher Level Analysis and Approaches Paper 1 unmanageable in October, because the demand is new rather than harder.

From IGCSE the mechanism is tier. Extended tier Cambridge 0580 or Higher tier Pearson Edexcel 4MA1 covers the algebra Higher Level assumes; Core and Foundation tier do not. Additional Mathematics, where a school offers it, closes the gap almost entirely. A Core-tier candidate entering Higher Level Analysis and Approaches is carrying a year's deficit into a two-year course, and the right advice is often to move to Standard Level or to Applications and Interpretation early rather than to buy two years of tutoring.

Either way the fix is diagnosable and time-limited. Six to ten weeks of targeted algebraic fluency work, done calculator-free, closes most of the September gap for a student who is otherwise capable. The mistake families make is treating it as a general confidence problem and buying open-ended weekly tutoring, when what is needed is a short specific block followed by a review against component marks.

07

What IB maths tuition costs in Dubai, and what a parent can verify alone

Prices in this market are easier to check than providers imply, and a Business Bay family can establish the whole picture in an afternoon without speaking to anybody. Open the published rate pages of four or five providers, note the figure and the date, and the bands become obvious. That exercise is the honest basis for the numbers below, every one of which belongs to the provider or publication named beside it.

At the budget end of online tutoring, EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. For a qualified subject tutor online, Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts in-home one-to-one visits at AED 180 to 350 and IB, IGCSE or A-Level specialist work at AED 200 to 450 or more, with independent home tutors reaching AED 200 to 500 once travel is included. TutorChase quotes AED 270 for specialist work and BartyED AED 650 at the premium named-tutor end. Monthly packages seen in this market include AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions.

Two observations a parent can make from that data without any help. First, the in-home band sits above the equivalent online band by roughly the cost of the travel, and the extra buys logistics rather than a better specialist. Second, Higher Level mathematics sits at the specialist end of every published scale, which means a rate at the budget end for Higher Level Analysis and Approaches is a signal to ask who is teaching and what they have taught before.

IB Gram does not publish a UAE price list on these pages and does not present market rates as ours. The free trial lesson exists so that a family can see the teaching before discussing money, and the consultation exists so that the number of sessions is decided from component marks rather than from a package. We also do not publish satisfaction percentages, average score claims or any statistic we cannot support with n, date and method, which is why there are none on this page.

Planning a Diploma mathematics year backwards

A mathematics year is planned backwards from the examination session, and in the UAE the Diploma session that schools sit is May. This page does not publish an IB examination window or a results date, because ibo.org returns an error to automated checking and no IB date in this project has been confirmed from the IB itself. Confirm every date with your school's Diploma coordinator, who has the official timetable.

What can be planned without dates is the sequence, and the sequence is what families get wrong. The Exploration deadline is set internally by the school and usually falls well before the examination term, which means Exploration work competes with content teaching rather than following it. Mock examinations sit roughly a term before the session. Predicted grades are issued for university applications before the student has finished the course, which is why DP1 performance matters more than students expect.

The practical consequence for a Business Bay family is about load rather than content. The weeks when the Exploration deadline, the Extended Essay deadline and the mock examinations cluster are the weeks when a weekly tutoring session should reduce or pause, not intensify. Families who add hours in those weeks typically see attendance collapse and then conclude that tutoring did not work, when what failed was the calendar.

Ramadan also moves the shape of the term for many families in this corridor, with school days shortened and evening schedules reorganised around iftar. Sessions can be moved to post-iftar timings or to the early afternoon, and planning that in advance rather than improvising week by week keeps continuity through a period that otherwise costs three or four weeks of momentum.

Regulation, honesty and the limits of what we will claim

  • The MoHRE private tuition work permit is free and valid for two years
  • No published fine schedule exists, so no figure should be quoted to you by anyone
  • IB Gram holds no regulator or board approval and operates no UAE premises
  • Nothing assessed is written, completed or edited to completion by a tutor

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 Regarding the Introduction of Private Tuition Work Permits. It is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. MoHRE's own service page, titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system.

Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so this page quotes no amount; a figure circulating online could not be verified against an official source. In Dubai, your child's school is regulated by KHDA, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. A tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai would need a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, which is a specific authorisation issued to institutes with premises.

IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, Ministry of Education, MoHRE, IB or Cambridge accreditation, licence, approval or partnership, and we do not describe ourselves as endorsed by any of them. We have no office, branch or centre in the United Arab Emirates. We name regulators on these pages to explain what they do, because a parent who understands the regulatory map can check a provider's claims, and because almost nobody else in this market names them at all.

On academic honesty the position is short. A tutor teaches content, explains criteria, models technique on a different example, and gives feedback on the student's own work. A tutor does not write, complete or edit assessed work to completion, and does not supply IB subject guides, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables as downloads. A malpractice finding falls on the student and can cost the Diploma. Any provider offering to produce an Exploration is disqualified by the offer itself, whatever else they do well.

Coverage, matching and what happens when the answer is no

  • All four courses covered; HL Analysis and Approaches fills first
  • The 5pm to 7pm GST peak fills fastest; 4.30pm and after 7.30pm stay open
  • No cross-course substitution; a course mismatch is declared, not papered over
  • Bring course, component marks and the internal Exploration deadline

No platform covers every course at every hour, and the honest move is to say where the gaps are. Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level are reliably covered. Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is covered but fills first, because it is the course with the deepest technique requirement and therefore the smallest specialist pool. Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level, with its statistical content, is the narrowest of the four and the one most likely to require a wait or an alternative hour.

The 5pm to 7pm Gulf Standard Time window is the busiest of the week for the whole corridor, since every Dubai family wants the same slot. For a Business Bay student arriving home around 4.30pm, the hours that stay open longest are 4.30pm itself and anything after 7.30pm, plus weekend mornings. Where no UAE-based specialist covers a course, the match may be a specialist teaching into the Gulf timezone from elsewhere, and that is stated before the trial lesson rather than discovered later.

What we will not do is match a student to a tutor who teaches a different course and hope the overlap is enough. It is not enough, particularly between Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level, where the content diverges substantially. If the specialist is not available at the hour you need, you will be told at the enquiry and offered the hours that are open.

Bring three things to the consultation and the first session becomes a diagnosis instead of an introduction: which of the four courses your child is enrolled on, the most recent component-level marks rather than the overall grade, and the school's internal Exploration deadline. Those three pieces of information decide what the first four weeks should be, and all three are free to obtain.

Where we tutor

Where Business Bay's Diploma students actually study

Business Bay holds no IB school inside its boundary, so a mathematics session has to be scheduled around a real commute. These are the areas that matter to a Business Bay Diploma family and what each does to the evening.

Business Bay

Tower living along the Dubai Water Canal with no Diploma school in the district. A 3.15pm finish plus a canal crossing produces a 4.10pm to 4.30pm arrival home, which sets the earliest realistic session start.

Sobha Hartland

The nearest school cluster by road and home to North London Collegiate School Dubai and Hartland International School. Five to twelve minutes from the canal towers, which makes it the one direction where a 4pm mathematics session is genuinely feasible.

Al Jaddaf

Creek-side and home to Swiss International Scientific School Dubai. A mixed-curriculum catchment, so confirming which IB maths course a student is actually enrolled on matters more here than in a single-curriculum district.

Downtown Dubai

One canal crossing from Business Bay and operationally identical for school-run purposes. Families commonly move between the two districts without any change to the school or the session timetable.

Al Quoz

Several campuses inside a large district that is slow to cross in the evening peak. Students travelling into Al Quoz for school arrive home later than the Sobha Hartland cohort by fifteen to twenty minutes on a typical weekday.

Al Barsha and Umm Al Sheif

A longer run west along Sheikh Zayed Road to several established IB and British campuses. Thursday and Sunday evenings are the worst of the week on this corridor, which is worth knowing before fixing a weekly slot.

Meydan and Nad Al Sheba

Villa communities south of the canal with the longest arrival times in this set. A 5pm start is realistic and a 4.30pm start usually is not, so Higher Level sessions here work better at 5.30pm or on weekend mornings.

Sheikh Zayed Road corridor

The spine every one of these commutes touches. Evening congestion between Interchange 1 and Interchange 3 is the practical reason online delivery removes a variable rather than adding one for a Business Bay Diploma student.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Business Bay

Sobha Hartland, Al Jaddaf and the Creek side

The closest campuses to Business Bay and the ones a canal-side Diploma family most often attends. Curricula are mixed across IB, UK and bilingual provision, so the maths course a student is enrolled on varies within a single year group.

  • North London Collegiate School Dubai
  • Hartland International School
  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai
  • Dubai Modern Education School
  • GEMS Our Own Indian School, Al Quoz

Al Barsha, Al Quoz and the western corridor

A wider spread of Diploma provision reached from Business Bay along Sheikh Zayed Road or Al Khail Road. The longest commutes in this set and therefore the latest realistic session starts on weeknights.

  • Repton Al Barsha
  • Dubai Heights Academy
  • GEMS Wellington Academy, Al Khail
  • Credence High School
  • Kent College Dubai

Al Safa, Al Wasl and Jumeirah

The established cluster west of the canal, fifteen to thirty minutes from Business Bay depending on the hour. A significant share of the corridor's sixth-form students sit their Diploma or A Levels here.

  • Jumeirah College
  • Safa British School
  • Safa Community School
  • Horizon English School
  • Jumeirah English Speaking School, Jumeirah

Named schools appear as context for the neighbourhood's education ecosystem. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership, client relationship or endorsement arrangement with any school named on this page, and inclusion does not imply one.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the course, not the subject

Tell us whether your child sits Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, and at which level. This single detail determines who can teach them. If you are not certain, the school's course selection letter or the student's timetable will say, and it is worth confirming before the consultation.

  2. 02

Send component marks, not the overall grade

A grade 4 built on a weak Paper 1 and a solid Paper 2 needs a different term from a grade 4 built evenly. Most Dubai schools report component marks and many families have never looked at that column. These numbers make a real diagnosis possible in the first session.

  3. 03

A short consultation on Gulf Standard Time

Fifteen to twenty minutes to agree what the gap actually is, how many sessions it justifies, and what hour works after the commute back to Business Bay. If the honest answer is that the losses are habitual and four weeks will fix them, we will say that rather than propose a year.

  4. 04

Matched to a tutor who teaches that course

One course, one level, one tutor. If nobody who teaches Higher Level Applications and Interpretation is free at the hour you need, you hear that at the enquiry and are offered the hours that are open, rather than being matched to an Analysis and Approaches tutor and told the overlap is sufficient.

  5. 05

A free trial lesson that ends in a diagnosis

The trial is a taught session, not a sales call. It should end with a written note naming which mark types are being lost, which of the six common loss points are active, and what the first four weeks would address. No card is required and the note is useful whether or not you book.

  6. 06

Review at six weeks against marked papers

Six weeks in, we compare marked papers and component marks rather than impressions, and decide together whether to continue, change focus, change tutor or stop. Stopping is a legitimate result and we will recommend it when the work is done.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

One of four courses, matched exactly

A Business Bay student on Higher Level Analysis and Approaches works with somebody who has taught Paper 3, not with a mathematics tutor in general. Between the four IB maths courses the content diverges enough that an approximate match wastes a term before anybody notices.

Mark-scheme literacy taught deliberately

Method marks, accuracy marks, reasoning marks and follow-through are taught as an explicit skill in the first few sessions. For many students this is the fastest available grade movement, because it recovers marks they were already earning mathematically and discarding on the page.

Live shared working, not photographs

Lessons run over live video with a shared whiteboard, so the tutor sees working as it forms. In mathematics this is where errors are actually catchable. Working photographed and sent afterwards shows the destination and conceals the wrong turn.

The Exploration coached, never written

Criteria explained by letter with the marks attached, topic viability tested before weeks are invested, and feedback on the student's own draft. Nothing written, drafted or edited to completion by a tutor, because a malpractice finding falls on your child and not on us.

Timed to the commute out of the canal towers

Business Bay has no Diploma school inside the district. Sessions start from 4.30pm Gulf Standard Time, after the drive back from Sobha Hartland, Al Jaddaf or Al Barsha, with weekend mornings available when weeknights are genuinely full.

Figures and limits both stated plainly

Every AED figure here is attributed to the provider that published it, with the month it was read. No in-home visits in the UAE, no UAE office, no regulator approval claimed, no IB date published that we could not verify, and no statistics without n, date and method.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Business Bay: your questions answered

My child is in Business Bay and does IB maths. Which course do I need a tutor for?+

Find out which of four courses they are enrolled on before you book anything: Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, at Higher or Standard Level. The school's course selection letter or the student's timetable will say. This matters more than any other detail, because the four courses assess different content and weight their papers differently. A tutor strong in Standard Level Applications and Interpretation may be of limited use to a Higher Level Analysis and Approaches student, and it typically takes a family several weeks and several paid sessions to discover that.

What is Paper 3 and why has nobody explained it to us?+

Paper 3 is sat only by Higher Level students, in both IB maths courses, and carries twenty per cent of the grade. It consists of extended problem-solving questions built in parts towards an unfamiliar result, with a calculator permitted. It rewards reading the whole question before starting and using earlier parts in later ones, which is a technique rather than a body of knowledge. Many schemes of work leave it until the final term, which is why students meet it late and mismanage the time. Confirm the current format with your child's teacher against the school's subject guide.

Why does my child need to revise Paper 1 without a calculator?+

Because in Analysis and Approaches no graphical display calculator is permitted in Paper 1, which carries forty per cent of the Standard Level grade and thirty per cent at Higher Level. Every mark on that paper depends on algebraic manipulation performed by hand. A student who revises by working calculator-permitted questions is practising a skill that will not be available in the examination hall. The mathematics looks identical on the page, which is why this error can survive an entire term unnoticed. In Applications and Interpretation a calculator is permitted throughout, so the rule does not apply.

What are M marks and A marks on an IB maths paper?+

They are the two main mark types in IB mathematics mark schemes. A method mark rewards a correct approach even when the arithmetic fails; an accuracy mark rewards the correct, correctly rounded value. There are also reasoning marks for explicit justification and follow-through marks that let a later answer earn credit from an earlier wrong value. The practical consequence is large: a bare wrong answer scores nothing even with a perfect unwritten method, while visible working with a slip in it can score most of the marks. Writing the method line is therefore mechanical mark protection.

Does it really cost marks if my child rounds to two significant figures?+

Yes, routinely, and it is the cheapest mark loss on any IB maths paper to fix. On calculator-permitted papers, answers should be given to three significant figures unless the question states otherwise. A correct method followed by an over-rounded or unrounded final answer loses the accuracy mark while the mathematics was entirely right. Across a full paper this can amount to several marks, which at a grade boundary is decisive. It takes about two weeks of deliberate practice to make correct rounding automatic, and it is usually the first thing a good diagnostic session identifies.

When a question says hence, can my child use a different method?+

They can, and they may still lose the mark. The word hence is an instruction to use the result of the previous part, and the question is testing whether the student can see the connection. A correct answer reached independently sometimes fails to earn the credit the question was designed to award. The related variant, hence or otherwise, does permit an independent method. Teaching a student to read command terms as instructions rather than as connecting words is a short piece of work with a disproportionate effect on marks across a whole paper.

How are the Exploration marks divided up?+

The Exploration is worth twenty per cent of every IB maths grade and is marked on five criteria for a total of twenty marks: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics. Use of mathematics carries the largest allocation, and personal engagement and reflection the smallest. Confirm the current descriptors and allocations with your child's teacher, since the IB revises subject guides on a cycle. The practical point for a parent is that the largest single criterion depends on the mathematics being at the level of the course, which is a decision made when the topic is chosen.

My child picked an Exploration topic a month ago. Can a tutor check it is viable?+

Yes, and that is one of the most useful twenty minutes available. A tutor can judge whether the proposed mathematics is commensurate with the course level, because a Higher Level Exploration built on Standard Level statistics cannot reach the top bands however well it is written. That conversation is entirely within the academic-honesty boundary: the question being answered is whether a topic can meet the criteria, not what the student should write. Doing it at the proposal stage routinely saves a month of misdirected work, and a month is a lot in DP1.

Will a tutor help my child finish the Exploration before the school deadline?+

A tutor will explain each criterion, discuss the structure, and give feedback on your child's own draft. A tutor will not write any part of it, supply sentences, perform the calculations or edit it to completion. That boundary exists to protect your child: a malpractice finding falls on the student and can cost the Diploma. If the deadline is genuinely unreachable, the conversation to have is with the school's coordinator rather than with a tutor. Any provider offering to produce an Exploration is disqualified by that offer, whatever else they appear to do well.

AA or AI: how do we decide without guessing at university requirements?+

Decide it from the destination, not from comfort. List three or four degree programmes the student might apply to, read the published mathematics requirement on each university's own admissions page, and pick the course that satisfies all of them. Analysis and Approaches suits mathematics, engineering, physics and quantitative economics, and is the usual expectation for competitive medicine routes. Applications and Interpretation suits business, social sciences, design, architecture and biology-led pathways, and at Higher Level carries statistics that Analysis and Approaches students never meet. It is a different course, not an easier one.

My child had strong MYP maths grades and is struggling in DP1. What changed?+

The demand changed rather than the difficulty. MYP mathematics is assessed on four criteria across coursework and tasks, which rewards investigation, process and communication. It does not require repeated timed manipulation of unseen algebra against a clock, which is exactly what a Diploma Paper 1 requires. A student holding 6s and 7s in MYP 5 can therefore be genuinely able and still find October of DP1 unmanageable. Six to ten weeks of calculator-free algebraic fluency work closes most of that gap, which is a short specific block rather than an open-ended year of tutoring.

Can a Core tier IGCSE student cope with Higher Level Analysis and Approaches?+

It is a hard road and often the wrong one. Extended tier Cambridge 0580 or Higher tier Pearson Edexcel 4MA1 covers the algebra that Higher Level Analysis and Approaches assumes, and Additional Mathematics closes the gap almost completely. A Core or Foundation tier candidate is carrying roughly a year's algebraic deficit into a two-year course where the technique load is the heaviest of the four IB maths options. The honest advice is usually to move to Standard Level or to Applications and Interpretation within the first weeks of DP1, rather than buying two years of support to stay in place.

What does Higher Level IB maths tutoring cost in Dubai?+

Higher Level mathematics sits at the specialist end of every published scale in this market. Unitors publishes IB tuition from AED 200 an hour online, Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts IB, IGCSE and A-Level specialist work at AED 200 to 450 or more, TutorChase quotes AED 270 and BartyED AED 650 at the premium end. Those are each provider's own published figures, read in October 2026. A Higher Level rate quoted at the budget end of the market is a prompt to ask which IB maths course the tutor has actually taught, and how recently.

How many sessions a week does Higher Level maths realistically need?+

One session a week sustained across a term usually beats two sessions a week that collapse by week five, and the Diploma workload makes collapse likely. The exception is a paper-specific block: four to eight weeks at two sessions a week aimed at Paper 1 fluency or Paper 3 technique, with a defined endpoint. Load should fall rather than rise in the weeks where the Exploration deadline, Extended Essay deadline and mock examinations cluster. Families who add hours in those weeks typically lose attendance and then conclude tutoring failed, when the calendar did.

How should we handle the Ramadan weeks without losing a term of maths momentum?+

Yes, and planning it in advance rather than week by week is what keeps momentum. School days shorten during Ramadan and evening routines reorganise around iftar, which for many Business Bay families makes the usual 5pm slot unworkable for several weeks. Sessions can move to the early afternoon or to a post-iftar time. Agreeing the alternative pattern before the month starts avoids the three or four weeks of lost continuity that otherwise happens, which matters most for a DP2 student working towards the May session.

When are the IB maths examinations, and can you confirm the dates?+

UAE schools sit the May session, and we will not publish a specific IB examination or results date on this page. The IB's own site does not permit automated checking, so no IB date in this project has been confirmed from the IB itself, and a date a parent plans around has to be right. Ask your school's Diploma coordinator, who holds the official timetable for your centre. What can be planned without dates is the sequence: Exploration deadline first, then mocks, then predicted grades, then the session itself.

Do you have a tutor who could come to our apartment in Business Bay?+

No. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the United Arab Emirates and has no office, branch or tuition centre here; home visiting is a service we run only in India. All UAE tuition is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. For mathematics specifically, the live shared whiteboard is arguably better than sitting beside a student, because the tutor sees written working as it forms rather than after it is finished, and that is precisely where mark-scheme errors are visible and correctable.

Start with the course, the component marks and the deadline

Three pieces of information decide whether IB mathematics tutoring is worth buying and what it should do first: which of the four courses your child is enrolled on, the most recent component-level marks rather than the overall grade, and the school's internal Exploration deadline. All three are free and take one email to the school. Bring them to a short consultation on Gulf Standard Time and we will tell you whether the losses are habitual, in which case four weeks is the honest answer, or technical, in which case a term is. The trial lesson is free, no card is needed, and it ends with a written note of which mark types are being lost. If the answer is that your child does not need a tutor, we will say so.
