IB Home Tutor in Karama

Families searching for an IB home tutor in Karama almost always need a subject specialist rather than a generalist, because the Diploma is six separate examinations with six separate internal assessments. A Group 3 historical investigation and a Group 4 scientific investigation share a word and nothing else. We teach one-to-one over live video, starting from the subject and the component that is actually losing marks.

  • Specialists by subject group rather than general Diploma tutors
  • Internal assessment work that stays inside IB honesty rules

IB & IGCSE in Karama

There is no such thing as an IB tutor - there are six of them

A Karama parent searching for an IB home tutor is usually imagining one person who can help across the board. The Diploma does not work that way. A student takes six subjects from six groups, three at Higher Level and three at Standard, and each one has its own papers, its own weightings, its own command terms and its own internally assessed component. The word used for that component is often the same across groups and the thing itself is completely different. A History internal assessment is a historical investigation with a source evaluation section. A Mathematics internal assessment is a mathematical exploration. A Group 4 internal assessment is a scientific investigation with four criteria. A Language A internal assessment is an oral, recorded and marked by the teacher.

This matters because a generalist tutor working on the wrong model produces confident, plausible, useless advice. Being told to structure your investigation with a clear hypothesis is sensible for a science, irrelevant for an Economics commentary and actively misleading for a mathematical exploration. The useful first question is not how is your child doing in the IB. It is which subject, at which level, and which component - paper or internal assessment - is losing the marks.

The second thing worth understanding before buying anything is where the points come from. Six subjects at a maximum of 7 points each gives 42, and Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay together contribute up to 3 more through a published matrix, for a total of 45. There are also conditions that can fail a candidate who has enough raw points, which is why the core is not an optional extra. A family focused entirely on subject grades and ignoring a Theory of Knowledge grade of E is looking at the wrong risk.

Karama's own situation shapes how this plays out. This is apartment living, often with siblings sharing a table and a device, and the Diploma student in the household is generally commuting out of the district to an IB school. That means the realistic session window is narrow and the room is shared, and both of those are planning problems rather than teaching problems. Families here are also, in our experience, unusually price-sensitive and unusually well informed, which is why this page publishes the market rates with their sources attached rather than asking anyone to take a figure on trust.

On delivery, plainly: the URL you clicked says home tutor because that is the phrase parents type, and we are going to answer the home-tutoring question honestly rather than pretend it was not asked. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. Home visits are a service we provide only in India. Every lesson for a Karama family is one-to-one over live video. The argument for that is made in a table further down, and the short version is that six subject groups need six specialists, and six specialists do not live within a twenty-minute drive of one Karama address.

At a glance

  • Six subject groups, three at Higher Level, each with its own internally assessed component
  • 42 points from subjects plus up to 3 from Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay
  • Command terms are published per subject and set the expected response
  • Internal assessment work is the student's own; a tutor teaches and gives feedback
  • Karama households commonly share a study space and a device - plan the hour accordingly
  • All UAE lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, in Gulf Standard Time
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Where a Karama family usually sits when they start looking. The subject and the component matter more than the year, but the year changes what is still available to influence.

DP1Ages 16-17 · DP1

Diploma year one

Content is introduced across all six subjects, internal assessment work is planned and often begun, the Extended Essay process starts and Theory of Knowledge runs alongside. The highest-value tutoring in DP1 is on internally assessed components, because every one of them is still fully open and the design decisions that cap a mark have not yet been made.

In a Dubai school, DP1 also carries mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral studies, with instructional time calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. A DP1 student reporting that there is no time is usually right, and looking at the timetable before buying hours sometimes produces a better answer than buying them.

DP2Ages 17-18 · DP2

Diploma year two

Remaining content, internal assessment submission deadlines, the Extended Essay final submission, Theory of Knowledge components, mocks and then the papers. By the spring of DP2 most internally assessed marks are closed, so the remaining work is paper technique and the mechanical mark-losers that command terms and mark schemes punish.

UAE candidates sit the May session, with November as the alternative sitting. No IB session or results date appears on this page: the IB's own site blocks automated checking, so any date should come from your school's IB coordinator or from ibo.org rather than from a tutoring website.

HLDP1 and DP2 · 240 hours each

The three Higher Level subjects

Higher Level subjects carry additional content, longer papers and in several groups an extra component - a Higher Level essay in Language A, a third paper in the sciences, extended options in Individuals and Societies. The three Higher Levels are where a Diploma point total is usually won or lost, and where specialist teaching is most clearly worth more than general support.

Karama families frequently choose Higher Level combinations with university entry in mind - two sciences plus Mathematics is common. That combination is heavy on time rather than on ability, and it is worth planning across two years rather than discovering the load in DP1 term two.

CoreDP1 into DP2

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Theory of Knowledge is assessed through an exhibition and an essay and graded on a letter scale; the Extended Essay is an independent research piece with a 4,000 word limit, also letter-graded. Together they contribute up to 3 points through a published matrix, and there are conditions attached that can fail an otherwise sufficient candidate. Neither is optional and both are routinely under-prioritised.

Dubai IB schools run internal Extended Essay deadlines that sit well before the IB submission date, and those internal dates are the ones that actually govern a student's spring. Ask the coordinator for them in writing at the start of DP1 rather than hearing about them in DP2.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The six groups and the core, with the internally assessed component for each and the place marks most reliably go. This is the list to work from when deciding which specialist you actually need.

Group 1: Language A, Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper 1 guided textual analysis on an unseen text, Paper 2 comparative essay, an internally assessed individual oral, and at Higher Level an additional essay. The commonest loss is on Paper 1: students summarise the text rather than analysing how its choices create effect, and summary scores in the lowest bands however fluent the prose.

Group 1: Language A, Literature

HL and SL

The same assessment architecture applied to literary works only. The comparative Paper 2 essay is where structure decides the mark - a student who writes about two works in sequence rather than in comparison caps themselves. Comparison has to be the organising principle of each paragraph, not a concluding paragraph.

Group 2: Language B

HL and SL

A writing paper, a listening and reading paper, and an individually assessed oral carrying a substantial share of the grade. The oral is the component students prepare least and worry about most. Preparation is specific: the visual stimulus or extract, the structure of the response, and the ability to sustain an unscripted conversation about it.

Group 3: History

HL and SL

Source-based Paper 1, essay Paper 2, Higher Level regional Paper 3, and an internally assessed historical investigation. Paper 1 rewards evaluating sources for origin, purpose, value and limitation rather than describing them. Paper 2 essays fail on the absence of a sustained argument, not on a shortage of facts.

Group 3: Economics

HL and SL

Papers requiring diagram-led explanation, with an internal assessment built from commentaries on published news articles against syllabus units. Diagram accuracy and labelling is marked and routinely half-done. The commentaries are a different skill from the papers and need separate, timely teaching.

Group 3: Business Management and Psychology

HL and SL

Both run case-study or research-method heavy assessments with their own internal components. Business Management rewards applying a named tool to the stimulus rather than describing the tool; Psychology rewards methodological critique of named studies. Generic answers that could fit any stimulus score in the lower bands.

Group 4: Biology, Chemistry, Physics

HL and SL

Paper 1 with a multiple-choice and a data-based section, Paper 2 extended response, and a scientific investigation worth 20 per cent across four criteria. The investigation closes months before the papers, so a DP2 student in the spring has only paper technique left. Uncertainty and graph work pays in both the papers and the investigation.

Group 5: Mathematics Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The more abstract route, with proof, calculus and algebraic technique emphasised, plus a mathematical exploration. Higher Level Analysis and Approaches is the most demanding Group 5 option and the usual choice for engineering and mathematics applicants. Marks go on algebraic accuracy under time rather than on conceptual gaps.

Group 5: Mathematics Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The modelling and statistics route, with heavier technology use and the same exploration component. Choosing between the two routes is a decision with university consequences and should be checked against the specific courses a student may apply to, not against a general reputation.

Group 6 and the elective swap

HL and SL

Visual Arts, Music, Theatre and Film each run portfolio or performance-based assessment with substantial internally assessed weight. Many Dubai students swap Group 6 for a second subject from Groups 1 to 4, which is permitted and changes the balance of internal assessment deadlines in a year - worth mapping before DP1.

Theory of Knowledge

Compulsory core

An exhibition of three objects against a prompt, and an essay on a prescribed title, letter-graded. Students treat it as unassessed background and then find it affecting their point total through the core matrix. The essay rewards engaging with the prescribed title precisely rather than writing generally about knowledge.

The Extended Essay

Compulsory core

An independent 4,000 word research piece in a subject, letter-graded, with supervisor meetings and reflections forming part of the assessment. The commonest failure is a research question too broad to answer in 4,000 words, and it is diagnosable in a single conversation months before the essay is written.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of Diploma support for a Karama household. The right one depends on which component is losing marks and whether it is still open.

Single-subject specialist support

A standing or short-block engagement in one subject at one level, with a tutor who teaches that subject rather than the Diploma generally. The first session establishes which component is leaking - a paper, an internal assessment, a specific command term - and the work is aimed there rather than across the syllabus.

  • One subject, one level, one named component to start
  • Works from the student's own marked script or draft
  • Progress measured against the next assessment in that subject
  • Delivered online, one-to-one, over live video

Internal assessment process support

Help with the design and process of an internally assessed component while it is still open: a research question, a method, an exploration focus, an article choice for an Economics commentary, an oral structure. The student produces every submitted word and every data point. The tutor asks questions and gives feedback.

  • Started before design decisions cap the available marks
  • Component-specific: a historical investigation is not a scientific one
  • A written boundary on what a tutor will not do
  • Timed against the school's internal deadline, not the IB's

Core support: Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Short, well-timed work on the two components that quietly affect a point total: narrowing an Extended Essay research question until it is answerable in 4,000 words, and engaging precisely with a Theory of Knowledge prescribed title rather than writing generally. Both are process coaching and neither involves producing text.

  • Research question narrowed in DP1, not rescued in DP2
  • Prescribed title read closely before any essay planning
  • Supervisor reflections understood as assessed material
  • Nothing written, edited to completion or supplied by the tutor

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Karama

01

What an IB home tutor search in Karama is actually asking for

  • The phrase home tutor bundles a delivery request and a teaching request
  • IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; lessons are online, one-to-one
  • Six subjects need six specialists, who do not share a postcode
  • The in-home premium pays for travel rather than for subject expertise

The phrase home tutor carries two separate requests inside it, and separating them is the first useful thing to do. One is about delivery: somebody who comes to the flat, so there is no journey and the hour can be seen. The other is about the teaching: somebody who knows this subject at this level well enough to be worth paying. Families ask for both in one phrase, and in Karama specifically the second is far harder to satisfy than the first.

On delivery, the honest answer is short. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. Home visits are a service we provide only in India. Every lesson for a Karama family is one-to-one over live video, and we say it before anyone pays rather than after. Two providers ranking for these searches route UAE parents to overseas phone numbers without disclosing where the tutor sits, and a family should not find that out at the end of a month.

On the teaching, the Diploma makes the problem concrete. A student needs six subjects taught, three of them at Higher Level, each with its own internally assessed component. A household that insists on physical proximity is choosing from the people who can reach that address and are free in the right hour. For a single subject, that pool might be adequate. For Higher Level Mathematics Analysis and Approaches plus a Group 4 investigation plus an Extended Essay in Economics, it is not. The specialist you want for each of those three is a different person, and the chance that all three live near one Karama address is negligible.

There is also a market reality worth naming. The in-home rates published in Dubai run from AED 180 to AED 500 an hour including travel, against AED 150 to AED 450 for online specialists. The amount above the online band is paying for a drive across the creek. For a household that may need two or three subjects supported over two years, that premium compounds into a real number, and it buys no additional subject expertise at all.

02

The six groups and their internal assessments, side by side

The single most useful table a Diploma parent can read is this one, because it shows that the internally assessed components across the six groups have almost nothing in common beyond being internally assessed. A tutor who understands one of them well does not thereby understand another, and advice that transfers between them is usually wrong.

Consider three of them. A Group 4 scientific investigation is assessed on four criteria - research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation - and its ceiling is set by whether the chosen variable can be measured precisely enough with school apparatus. A Group 3 History historical investigation requires a focused question, an evaluation of sources and a reflection on the methods of the historian, and its ceiling is set by whether sources on that question actually exist and are accessible. A Group 5 mathematical exploration is a piece of personal mathematical writing with its own criteria including personal engagement, and its ceiling is set by whether the student has mathematics of the right level to apply. Those are three different problems requiring three different conversations.

What they do share is timing. Almost every internally assessed component is submitted at a school deadline well before the papers, which means there is a point after which the mark is closed. For a family deciding where tutoring money goes, that is the governing fact: a DP1 student has every internal assessment open and a DP2 student in the spring has none of them. Spending in DP1 on internal assessment design and in DP2 on paper technique follows the architecture of the qualification rather than fighting it.

One more practical note, specific to Karama households with more than one Diploma student or a Diploma student and an IGCSE sibling. Internal assessment deadlines cluster, because schools set them to fit their own calendars, and several components can fall in the same fortnight. Asking the coordinator for the internal deadline list at the start of DP1 lets a family see the crunch and plan around it, and it costs nothing.

03

Command terms: the published vocabulary that sets the ceiling

Every Diploma subject publishes a list of command terms, grouped by the level of thinking they demand, and each term has an expected form of response. This is the most systematically ignored piece of free information in the whole qualification. A student who answers an evaluate question by describing has not made a mistake of knowledge; they have answered a different question, and the mark scheme has nothing to award.

The structure is consistent across subjects even where the vocabulary varies. The lowest tier asks for retrieval: state, list, define, identify. The middle tier asks for description or application: describe, outline, summarise, calculate, apply. The highest tier asks for judgement: analyse, evaluate, discuss, justify, compare and contrast, to what extent. Marks rise with the tier, and so does the structural demand on the answer. A to what extent question requires a position, evidence on both sides and a judgement; a describe question requires none of those and gains nothing by including them.

The second half of the skill is mark allocation. In most Diploma subjects a question's mark value tells you how many creditable points it wants. A six-mark question wants six distinct points, not one point expressed beautifully six ways. Students who write well are the most prone to this error, which is why strong writers sometimes underperform in the sciences and in Individuals and Societies while weaker writers who answer mechanically do better than expected.

Explicit command-term work is among the cheapest interventions in the Diploma and among the most transferable, because it applies across all six subjects at once rather than one. Two sessions early in DP1, followed by checking every past-paper answer against the command term before checking it against the content, moves marks in every subject the student takes. It is also something a family can do without buying anything: print the command term list for each subject from the school and read it with the student.

DIPLOMA COMMAND TERMS - WHAT EACH TIER DEMANDS AND WHAT IT PENALISES

04

The oral components, and why Karama students prepare them last

  • Both language groups carry a substantially weighted internally assessed oral
  • In Language A the global issue framing caps the component before recording
  • In Language B the unscripted follow-up is the part that needs coaching
  • Oral practice over video rehearses the actual recording conditions

Both language groups carry an internally assessed oral, and between them they account for a substantial share of two of a student's six subject grades. They are also, consistently, the components students prepare least and worry about most, which is an unusual combination and worth understanding.

In Group 1 Language A, the individual oral asks a student to examine how a global issue is presented in two works, one of them in translation, through two chosen extracts. The marks turn on the quality of the framing as much as on the analysis: a global issue chosen because it sounds impressive, rather than because the extracts genuinely support it, caps the whole component before a word is spoken. That decision is made weeks before the recording and is the right moment for a conversation.

In Group 2 Language B, the individual oral works from a stimulus and then opens into unscripted conversation. Students rehearse the prepared portion and then struggle in the follow-up, because the follow-up is the part that cannot be scripted. Preparation that works is specifically about handling the unprepared section - buying time in the target language, developing an answer rather than ending it, and having two or three reusable structures ready. That is coaching, it is practical, and it is quite different from language teaching.

For a Karama household there is a practical complication worth naming. Oral practice needs a quiet room and a working microphone, and in a flat with siblings sharing a table that is a scheduling problem rather than an academic one. It is also the one kind of session where the online format is unambiguously better than a tutor in the room, because the student practises speaking into exactly the setup the real recording will use. We would rather a student rehearse in the conditions of the assessment than in a conversation across a dining table.

05

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay: the three points nobody plans for

  • Up to 3 points come from Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay combined
  • Conditions attached to the core can fail an otherwise sufficient candidate
  • Extended Essays fail at the research question, months before the writing
  • Theory of Knowledge essays fail by ignoring the precise prescribed title

Six subjects at a maximum of 7 points gives 42. The remaining 3 points come from Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay through a published matrix that combines their letter grades, and there are conditions attached that can fail a candidate who has otherwise accumulated enough. Families who treat the core as background are carrying a risk they have not priced.

The Extended Essay fails most often at the research question, and it fails there months before anyone writes anything. A question too broad to answer in 4,000 words produces an essay that surveys rather than argues, and surveys score in the lower bands. A question narrow enough to answer properly feels unambitious to a seventeen-year-old and scores well. That is a counter-intuitive trade and it needs explaining rather than asserting. The supervisor reflections are also part of the assessment, which students regularly discover late.

Theory of Knowledge has two components - an exhibition of three objects against a prompt, and an essay on a prescribed title - and the essay is where the marks concentrate. The recurring error is writing generally about knowledge rather than engaging with the precise wording of the prescribed title. The titles are deliberately specific, and a response that would fit three different titles fits none of them well. Reading the title closely, phrase by phrase, before any planning is the whole of the useful early work.

On where a tutor may help, the boundary is the same as everywhere else and worth restating because the core is where pressure peaks in DP2. A tutor can interrogate a research question, ask whether sources or data exist, read a prescribed title alongside a student and ask what each phrase commits them to, and give feedback on the student's own draft. A tutor does not write, co-write, edit to completion or supply any part of an Extended Essay, a Theory of Knowledge essay or an exhibition commentary. One provider in this market sells completed internally assessed work outright, which is an academic honesty breach whose consequence falls on the student who submits it.

06

What Diploma tutoring costs for a Karama household, by subject

Karama families tend to ask the cost question first and in detail, which is sensible, so here are the published numbers with their sources rather than a range we invented. All figures were read in October 2026 from each provider's own pages, and none of them are IB Gram prices.

Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 at the budget end, which in practice buys homework supervision rather than Higher Level subject teaching. Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 an hour and IB from AED 200. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table places IB, IGCSE and A-Level specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above. TutorChase publishes AED 270. BartyED sits at AED 650 for premium named tutors. In-home one-to-one visits including travel are quoted at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate and up to AED 500 by independent home tutors. Monthly, Bestimate estimates a weekly one-hour session at AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year work, with packages advertised around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions.

The number that matters for a Diploma household is the multiple. Supporting two subjects is twice the monthly figure; three is three times. A family in a Karama flat budgeting AED 800 a month for one subject is not budgeting AED 800 for the Diploma. This is why we push so hard on identifying the single component that is actually losing marks: one well-aimed subject engagement plus a short internal assessment block usually outperforms three vague standing hours at the same total cost.

For context on the household budget rather than the tutoring one, KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. Dubai's private sector was 387,441 students across 227 private schools in 2024-25. We publish no rate card on this page, hold no office or centre in the UAE, and claim no approval or accreditation from the International Baccalaureate, KHDA or anyone else.

A tutor in a Karama flat against one-to-one online, subject by subject

The in-home case in Karama is not a weak one and we are not going to straw-man it. In an apartment with younger children, a tutor arriving removes a journey and makes the hour visible. The parent can tell whether the time was worked. For a single subject with a generalist that can be a reasonable arrangement, and plenty of families here make it.

Where it breaks is at the subject level. The Diploma asks for six subjects taught, three at Higher Level, each with a differently shaped internally assessed component. The specialist who understands what caps a mathematical exploration is not the person who understands what caps a historical investigation, and neither is the person who can coach an unscripted Language B oral follow-up. A household choosing from whoever can reach a Karama address is choosing from a pool defined by geography rather than by subject, and for the harder components that pool is often empty.

The other practical consideration is the room. Karama study space is typically shared, and a tutor in the flat occupies the one quiet surface for the whole visit while other children also need it. An online session needs a device and headphones and can run in a bedroom. For oral practice in either language group it is strictly better, because the student rehearses into the same microphone-and-screen setup the real recording uses. These are small advantages individually and they add up across two years.

The cost difference is the least interesting argument and still worth stating plainly. In-home rates in this market run AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel, against AED 150 to 450 for online specialists. The premium above the online band pays for a drive across the creek. Over two years and two subjects that is a significant sum and it buys no additional subject knowledge. Our position remains the straightforward one: IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE, every lesson here is one-to-one over live video, and we tell families that before they pay.

KHDA, the mandatory subjects and what the Diploma week has left

  • KHDA oversees Dubai private education quality on a six-band inspection scale
  • Mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral studies run alongside the Diploma
  • Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, minimum advised 25 minutes
  • An inspection band says nothing specific about one subject department

Dubai's private schools are overseen by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate and inspects on a six-band scale from Outstanding down to Very Weak. In 2024-25 the sector was 387,441 students across 227 private schools offering seventeen different curricula, with UK curriculum at 37 per cent of students, Indian at 26 per cent and US at 14 per cent. Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools - four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate - creating 16,846 new places, after six opened in 2025-26 and enrolment rose 6 per cent.

The timetable facts are the ones that bite a Diploma student. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools whatever the licensed international curriculum, under KHDA requirements implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided the total weekly time is met, and KHDA advises a minimum of 25 minutes for any mandatory subject lesson. KHDA also requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, since the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ, and requires that teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold the appropriate KHDA approval.

Put those hours beside six Diploma subjects, Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service, and a DP2 week has very little slack. A Karama student who says there is no time to do the Extended Essay properly is frequently making an accurate statement about the calendar rather than an excuse. Looking at the actual timetable before adding a tutoring hour sometimes produces a better answer than adding one, and we would rather say that than sell against a problem the timetable created.

On inspection bands, which families here read closely when comparing schools: a band is a judgement on a whole school across many measures. It does not tell you whether that school's Higher Level Chemistry teaching is strong, whether its internal assessment deadlines are set sensibly, or whether its Extended Essay supervision is attentive. Those are the questions that actually affect a point total, and the people who can answer them are other parents in the same year group and the IB coordinator.

Permits, accreditation claims and the dates we leave out

  • MoHRE private tuition work permit: free, two years, Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • No official fine schedule is published, so no figure should be quoted to you
  • IB Gram holds no regulator or board accreditation and no UAE premises
  • No IB session or results dates appear here; confirm them with your coordinator

Private tutoring in the UAE runs on a permit and a Karama parent can check it directly. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's own service page is titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, lists no fees and states a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published officially, so no amount should be quoted to you by anybody.

A related rule: in Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar private and charter school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct likewise bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Anyone offering a Karama family their child's own subject teacher privately is proposing something that teacher should not be doing.

On IB Gram: we hold no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from the International Baccalaureate, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge International or Pearson. A KHDA Educational Services Permit is a specific authorisation for training institutes with premises in Dubai, involving initial approval, a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps and annual renewal requested at least thirty days before expiry; we do not hold one. We have no office, centre or branch in the UAE. We publish no satisfaction percentage, star rating or tutor count, because none of those could carry a sample size, a date and a method.

And there is no IB examination or results date on this page. The IB's own site blocks automated fetching, which means any date we published would be unverified, and a wrong date in a Diploma plan is a date a family acts on. UAE candidates sit the May session with November as the alternative; for the specific dates, ask your school's IB coordinator or check ibo.org. We also do not publish or redistribute IB subject guides, assessment criteria documents, past papers or mark schemes as downloads - we cite them and link out, because reproducing them is the IB's copyright rather than ours to share.

Where we tutor

Karama and the districts around it

Karama is dense apartment living a few minutes inland from the creek. The Diploma is identical across these neighbourhoods; what changes is the study space at home and the hour at which a session can realistically start.

Karama

Flats throughout, with a shared living-room table the usual study space and often one laptop between siblings. Diploma students here generally commute out of the district to an IB school, which narrows the usable session window.

Al Mankhool

A short distance west, with its own school cluster and often a walk or a five-minute drive. The earliest realistic sessions in this part of Dubai belong to households here, which matters when an internal assessment deadline is close.

Bur Dubai

Immediately adjacent and served by the same schools. The practical difference for a Diploma student is marginal, which is exactly why the tutoring shortlist comes out the same from either address.

Oud Metha

Inside the school belt with several large schools within walking distance and the shortest commutes in this set. A 4.30pm start is genuinely available, which is unusual in Old Dubai.

Al Garhoud

Across the creek near the airport and the closest concentration of IB provision to Karama. Most Diploma students in this part of the city attend a school in or near this cluster.

Deira

The north bank, with an unpredictable five o'clock crossing in either direction. Travel is the unreliable variable for Deira and Karama families alike, and a fixed online hour removes it entirely.

Al Qusais and Al Nahda

A large British and Indian curriculum belt stretching towards Sharjah. Diploma students from here commute furthest and sessions generally need to sit after six in the evening.

Al Jaffiliya and Satwa

Between Bur Dubai and Jumeirah with short runs to two clusters. Households often have children on two curricula, so the family timetable rather than the tutor's address is the binding constraint.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Karama

Karama, Bur Dubai and Oud Metha

Predominantly British and Indian curriculum, which means most Diploma students living in Karama travel to an IB school elsewhere in the city. That daily commute is the practical reason a fixed hour that does not depend on anyone travelling holds better than one that does.

  • The Indian High School, Dubai
  • St Mary's Catholic High School
  • Dubai Gem Private School
  • Ambassador School, Al Mankhool
  • Dubai English Speaking School

Al Garhoud, Deira and Al Mamzar

The nearest IB provision to Karama and where most Diploma students in this part of the city actually study. Shorter runs than the Al Qusais belt and the only group for whom an early-evening session is routinely realistic.

  • Deira International School
  • Al Ittihad Private School, Al Mamzar
  • Al Mawakeb School, Al Garhoud
  • The Indian Academy, Dubai

Schools are named only as context for the local education market. IB Gram has no affiliation with, partnership with, or endorsement from any school listed here.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the subject, the level and the component

Not the IB in general, but Higher Level Chemistry Paper 2, or the Group 3 historical investigation, or the Language B oral. That is the question a specialist can answer and the question a generalist cannot, and getting it right saves the first paid hour.

  2. 02

Establish whether the component is still open

Internally assessed components close at a school deadline well before the papers. Ask the coordinator for the internal deadline list. A DP1 student has all of them open; a DP2 student in the spring has paper technique and nothing else, and the plan should reflect that.

  3. 03

A free trial with the right specialist

One session at no cost with the subject specialist you would continue with, spent on a marked script or a live internal assessment draft. You get a written note of what was found and what the component's descriptor actually asks for, whether or not you book anything further.

  4. 04

Check the command term before the content

In the first session we read the student's answers against the command term rather than against the content. A describe answer to an evaluate question is a structural problem, and fixing it moves marks in all six subjects rather than one.

  5. 05

Fix the hour against a shared Karama table

Pick a slot that accounts for siblings needing the same surface and for the real commute home. Al Mankhool and Oud Metha households can often hold 4.30pm; Karama around five; Deira-side and Al Nahda after six, and all of these shift during Ramadan. Times are Gulf Standard Time.

  6. 06

    Measure, then end the block

Progress is the next assessment in that subject, not a tutor's impression. We report what moved and what did not, and if the pattern is flat we change the tutor or the approach rather than adding hours. When a component is submitted, that block is finished.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Specialists by subject, not Diploma generalists

Six groups with six differently shaped internal assessments cannot be covered well by one person. We match on the subject and the component rather than on availability, which is also why physical proximity is not a constraint we accept.

We tell you which component is closed

If an internal assessment has been submitted, no tutoring changes that mark and we will say so rather than booking hours against it. Knowing what is still open is the difference between spending usefully in DP1 and spending hopefully in DP2.

Command terms before content

A published list per subject sets the expected response, and answering an evaluate question by describing loses marks that content revision cannot recover. Two sessions on this transfers to all six subjects, and a family can do most of it for free with the school's own list.

A written boundary on assessed work

We interrogate research questions, teach technique and give feedback on the student's own drafts. We produce no part of an internal assessment, an Extended Essay, a Theory of Knowledge essay or an oral script. One provider in this market sells completed internal assessments; the consequence of that falls on the student.

Clear about where the tutor sits

The URL says home tutor because that is what parents search, and the honest answer is that IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. Every lesson here is one-to-one over live video, stated before payment rather than discovered afterwards.

Figures attributed, claims absent, dates omitted

Every AED range names its publisher and the month it was read. We publish no rating or satisfaction figure, claim no IB or KHDA accreditation, hold no UAE premises, and print no IB examination date we have not been able to verify from the IB itself.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Karama: your questions answered

Can one IB tutor cover all my child's Diploma subjects?+

Realistically no. A Diploma student takes six subjects from six groups, three at Higher Level, and each has its own papers, weightings, command terms and internally assessed component. Those components are structurally different: a mathematical exploration, a historical investigation with source evaluation, a scientific investigation on four criteria and a recorded oral have almost nothing in common. A generalist who understands one of them will give confident advice about another that transfers wrongly. Match on the subject and the component instead.

How are the 45 IB Diploma points actually made up?+

Six subjects at a maximum of 7 points each gives 42. The remaining 3 come from Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay combined, through a published matrix of their letter grades. There are also conditions attached that can fail a candidate who has accumulated enough raw points, which is why the core is not background. Families who focus entirely on subject grades and ignore a weak Theory of Knowledge grade are carrying a risk they have not priced.

Do you send an IB tutor to our flat in Karama?+

No. IB Gram does not provide home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Every lesson for a Karama family is one-to-one over live video, and we say so before anyone pays. The reason this is not a compromise for the Diploma is arithmetical: six subject groups need six specialists, and the chance that all of them live within a twenty-minute drive of one Karama address and are free in the right hour is negligible.

What is the difference between the internal assessments in different IB subjects?+

Almost everything except the label. A Group 4 scientific investigation is marked on research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, and its ceiling is whether the variable can be measured precisely enough. A History historical investigation needs a question that accessible sources can answer, plus source evaluation and a reflection on historical method. A mathematical exploration needs mathematics of the right level applied with personal engagement. An Economics internal assessment is commentaries on published articles against syllabus units. Four different problems, four different early conversations.

Why does my child lose marks when the content knowledge is there?+

Usually because of command terms and mark allocation. Every Diploma subject publishes a command term list, and each term has an expected response: state wants a fact, describe wants what happens, explain wants why, evaluate wants a position with evidence both ways and a judgement. Answering one with another loses marks that content revision cannot recover. The second half is mark allocation - a six-mark question wants six distinct creditable points, and strong writers are the most prone to making four points beautifully.

When should we start working on the Extended Essay?+

In DP1, and the first piece of work is the research question rather than the reading. Extended Essays fail most often because the question is too broad to answer in 4,000 words, which produces a survey rather than an argument, and surveys score in the lower bands. A narrower question feels unambitious to a seventeen-year-old and scores better. The supervisor reflections also form part of the assessment, which students regularly discover late. Ask the coordinator for the school's internal deadlines in writing at the start of DP1.

How much help can a tutor legitimately give on an IB internal assessment?+

A tutor can interrogate a research question, ask whether sources or data exist and are accessible, teach technique such as uncertainty handling or source evaluation, explain what each criterion descriptor rewards, and give feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor cannot write, co-write, edit to completion or supply any part of the submitted work. We put that boundary in writing before any internal assessment work starts, because under IB academic honesty rules the consequence of crossing it falls on the student rather than the tutor.

Why is the Language B oral so hard to prepare for?+

Because the part that carries the risk cannot be scripted. Students rehearse the prepared response to the stimulus and then struggle in the unscripted follow-up conversation, which is where the examiner probes. Useful preparation is specifically about that section: buying time in the target language, developing an answer rather than closing it, and having two or three reusable structures ready to deploy. That is coaching rather than language teaching, and practising it over video rehearses the actual recording conditions.

What should a Karama family budget for IB Diploma tutoring?+

Start from one subject and resist multiplying. Market rates read in October 2026: Unitors publishes IB from AED 200 an hour, Bestimate's Dubai table places specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, TutorChase publishes AED 270, and the budget end runs AED 33 to 65 with Tutopiya and EdFlik. Bestimate estimates a weekly hour at AED 600 to 1,200 a month mid-market. Two subjects doubles that and three triples it, which is why identifying the single component actually losing marks is the cheapest step available.

Is Theory of Knowledge really worth spending tutoring money on?+

A little, well timed, yes. It contributes to the core points alongside the Extended Essay and carries conditions that can fail a candidate. The essay is where the marks concentrate, and the recurring failure is writing generally about knowledge instead of engaging with the precise wording of a prescribed title. One or two sessions spent reading the title phrase by phrase, before any planning, is usually sufficient. Beyond that, Theory of Knowledge tutoring tends to produce elegant essays that answer a question nobody asked.

Which Mathematics route should my child take in the Diploma?+

It depends on what they intend to apply for, and it should be checked against specific courses rather than against a general reputation. Analysis and Approaches is the more abstract route, emphasising proof, calculus and algebraic technique, and is the usual expectation for engineering and mathematics. Applications and Interpretation emphasises modelling, statistics and technology use. Both carry the same mathematical exploration component. Confirm the requirement with the universities a student may actually apply to, because the two routes are treated differently by some courses.

My child is in DP2 and the internal assessments are submitted. What is left?+

Paper technique, and that is a real amount of grade. The mechanical losses are consistent across subjects: answering the wrong command term, making fewer creditable points than the marks available, abandoning a question rather than attempting it for partial credit, omitting units and working in the quantitative subjects, and running out of time through poor question triage. None of those are content problems. A full paper marked hard against the real scheme usually shows which of them is costing the most within a single session.

Does it matter that our Karama flat has no quiet study room?+

It matters for scheduling rather than for outcomes, and it is worth planning deliberately. Where siblings share a table and a device, staggered session times do more good than a better tutor at a worse hour. An online session needs a device and headphones and can run in a bedroom, which leaves the shared surface free. For oral components in either language group the online format is actually preferable, because the student practises into the same screen-and-microphone setup the real recording uses.

Do IB tutors in Dubai need a licence, and can we verify it?+

Yes to both. Private tutoring in the UAE requires the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's service page lists no fee and states a two-working-day completion time. Ask any prospective tutor directly. Tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties, and no official fine schedule is published.

Why do so many Diploma internal assessment deadlines fall together?+

Because schools set their internal deadlines to fit their own calendars rather than coordinating across six subjects, so several components can land in the same fortnight. That crunch is visible in advance if you ask the IB coordinator for the internal deadline list at the start of DP1, and it costs nothing to ask. A student struggling in a crunch fortnight is often struggling with load rather than with any one subject, and seeing the clash early lets a household plan around it.

Can a tutor help choose the extract for a Language A individual oral?+

A tutor can discuss it, and should, because the choice sets a ceiling on the whole component before a word is spoken. The marks turn on whether the global issue genuinely arises from the two chosen extracts rather than on whether it sounds impressive. A tutor can ask what each extract actually supports, test whether the framing holds, and give feedback on the student's own plan. The choice, the plan and the spoken response remain entirely the student's own work.

Name the subject and the component, then we can help

The Diploma is six examinations with six differently shaped internal assessments, so the useful request is not an IB tutor but a specialist in one subject, at one level, for one component. Ask the coordinator for the internal deadline list so you know what is still open, then book the free trial lesson: one hour, no cost, with the specialist you would continue with, spent on a marked script or a live draft, and a written note of what was found. We do not send tutors to UAE homes - every lesson for a Karama family is one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, and we would rather tell you that now than after you have paid.
