IB MYP Tutor in Arabian Ranches 2

If you are looking for an IB MYP tutor in Arabian Ranches 2 and finding almost nobody, that is not a failure of searching. The Middle Years Programme is the hardest syllabus in Dubai to staff privately, because it is assessed against criteria rather than content and most private tutors have never seen a task sheet for it. This page explains why the pool is thin, how to test a tutor in ten minutes, and what to do about it. Lessons run one-to-one over live video.

  • Matched by subject group and MYP year, not by subject name alone
  • Ten questions on this page let you test any tutor before you pay
  • Criterion-referenced marking explained, not assumed
  • One free trial lesson per student, taken before any payment

IB & IGCSE in Arabian Ranches 2

Why almost nobody near you teaches this programme privately

The honest answer to the question behind this search is that the pool of people who can genuinely teach the Middle Years Programme in Dubai is small, and the pool within driving distance of Arabian Ranches 2 is smaller still. This is not a marketing position. It is arithmetic. International Baccalaureate programmes account for around seven per cent of private enrolment in Dubai, against thirty-seven per cent for UK curricula, and only a fraction of IB schools run the full continuum including the MYP. The teachers who know it are mostly employed teaching it.

The second reason is structural. Most private tutors sell subject knowledge, and the MYP is not assessed on subject knowledge in the way a parent expects. Each subject is marked against four criteria, each on a scale of one to eight, giving a total out of thirty-two that is then converted into a grade from one to seven. A mathematics tutor who can teach quadratics brilliantly may have no idea what criterion B, investigating patterns, actually asks a student to produce, or why a student who can factorise perfectly is scoring a four on it.

The third reason is that there is no past-paper industry. A British-curriculum tutor can prepare for Cambridge 0580 by working through fifteen years of papers. MYP assessment is largely internal, task-based and moderated within the school, with task sheets, rubrics and command verbs that vary by unit. A tutor cannot bluff their way into that from a syllabus document, and the ones who have not taught it generally do not realise how much they are missing.

Arabian Ranches 2 sharpens the problem geographically. There is no secondary school inside the community, so students from Casa, Rosa, Palma, Lila, Camelia, Azalea, Reem, Yasmin and Rasha travel out to Motor City, Al Barsha South, Nad Al Sheba, the Sustainable City or Dubai Hills. The MYP schools they attend are spread across the city. The chance that a genuine MYP teacher in your child's subject group also happens to live within a twenty-minute drive of your villa is low, and searching by distance actively selects against the people who can help.

So this page is written to make you a better buyer rather than to claim a stock we do not hold. It sets out what the programme actually assesses, gives you ten questions that distinguish an MYP teacher from a subject graduate in the first ten minutes of a conversation, and is honest about what happens when nobody suitable is free. IB Gram delivers MYP support to this community one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India. That is also what makes the subject-group filter possible at all, because it stops competing with a map.

At a glance

  • Eight subject groups: language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical and health education, design

  • The Personal Project sits at the end of MYP 5 and is assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The MYP sits between two other programmes and feeds into choices made at fifteen. Where your child is in that sequence changes which kind of tutor is useful and whether one is useful at all.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups, each assessed against four criteria marked one to eight, organised around key and related concepts, global contexts and statements of inquiry. Assessment is largely internal and task-based, with teachers applying published criteria and moderating within the school rather than marking a national paper.

In Dubai the MYP runs in the schools operating the full IB continuum, which is a minority of the private sector. For families in Arabian Ranches 2 this means a longer school run and a thinner private tutoring market than a British-curriculum family faces. It also means the school's own task sheets are the single most useful document a tutor can be given.

PYPAges 3-12 · Years 1-6

Primary Years Programme

Transdisciplinary, inquiry-led and without the criterion scales that arrive in the MYP. A child moving from PYP into MYP 1 meets formal criterion marking for the first time, and the shock is usually about the form of the feedback rather than the difficulty of the work.

Families in this community whose children attended Ranches Primary School or another British-curriculum primary before moving into an MYP school face a different adjustment again: from percentage marks and levels to a four-criterion profile that looks like a judgement on the child rather than on a task.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Where the MYP leads for most students in continuum schools, and the reason MYP 4 and MYP 5 choices matter. Diploma assessment is largely external, heavily time-pressured and marked against mark schemes rather than criteria scales, which is a genuinely different skill.

The MYP-to-Diploma transition is where a specific weakness surfaces: students who have never been examined under time now are. The MYP rewards process, reflection and extended production; the Diploma rewards precise performance in two hours. A student with strong criterion marks and no exam stamina can lose a grade in DP1 term one for that reason alone.

ALTAges 14-16

The IGCSE alternative at 14

Some Dubai families move out of the MYP at fourteen into IGCSE, either by changing school or because their school offers both. It trades the MYP's breadth and interdisciplinary work for external examinations and a familiar grade scale, and it is a real decision rather than a formality.

Worth deciding on the destination rather than the comfort. A student heading for the IB Diploma in the same school usually benefits from staying in the MYP through MYP 5, because the inquiry and extended-production skills carry forward. A student who finds criterion-referenced feedback demoralising may do better on a route with a clearer mark.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The MYP's eight subject groups each have their own four criteria, and the criterion that drags is rarely the one a parent expects. The entries below name what each group actually asks a student to produce.

Mathematics

MYP 1-5, standard and extended

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Investigating patterns is the usual drag: it asks a student to find a rule, test it, generalise it and justify the generalisation, which is a different activity from solving an exercise correctly.

Sciences

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Inquiring and designing asks for a researchable question and a method with controlled variables, written by the student before any data exists, which is the skill that later carries the Diploma investigation.

Language and literature

MYP 1-5, by language

Criteria cover analysing, organising, producing text, and using language. Students frequently lose marks on analysing while writing fluently, because analysis asks for interpretation supported by evidence rather than for an account of what happened in the text.

Language acquisition

MYP 1-5, phases 1-6

Organised into phases rather than years, with criteria covering comprehending spoken and visual text, comprehending written and visual text, communicating, and using language. The phase a child is working in matters more than their MYP year, and a tutor who does not ask which phase has missed the first question.

Individuals and societies

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating, and thinking critically. Thinking critically is where able students lose marks: it asks for evaluation of sources and recognition of different perspectives, not a more confident version of the same narrative.

Design

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, and evaluating. The subject most often misread by parents as an art class. It is a documented design cycle in which the process evidence carries as many marks as the product, and the documentation is what students neglect.

Arts

MYP 1-5, visual and performing

Criteria cover investigating, developing, creating or performing, and evaluating. A student can produce excellent work and score poorly because the process journal is thin. Supporting arts in the MYP is largely about helping a student record their thinking, which is a teachable habit.

Physical and health education

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, planning for performance, applying and performing, and reflecting and improving performance. Written and reflective components carry real weight, which surprises families who assume the grade follows athletic ability.

Interdisciplinary units

At least one a year

Units that join two or more subject groups and are assessed against their own criteria: disciplinary grounding, synthesising, and reflecting on interdisciplinary learning. Almost no private tutor has encountered these, and they appear on reports, which is why a parent sees a mark nobody can explain.

The Personal Project

End of MYP 5

An independent project assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting. A supervisor is appointed by the school. A tutor may teach skills, discuss the process and respond to the student's own writing; no tutor may write the Personal Project or any part of what is submitted.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways MYP support is usefully bought. None of them is weekly indefinite tutoring, because the programme does not reward that in the way a British-curriculum course might.

A criterion-focused block

Four to six sessions aimed at one criterion in one subject, built on the school's own task sheet and the student's last marked task. The shape that produces a visible change on a report, because it is working on the thing the report actually scores.

  • Starts from the task sheet and the rubric, not from a syllabus summary
  • Targets one criterion, usually investigating patterns or inquiring and designing
  • Ends with the student able to self-assess against the descriptors

Transition support into the Diploma

A block in MYP 5 or the summer afterwards, aimed at the specific gap between criterion-assessed coursework and timed external examinations. Mostly about working under time, writing to a mark allocation and building algebraic or quantitative fluency.

  • The commonest reason a strong MYP student struggles in DP1 term one
  • Short, timed practice rather than new content
  • Also the right time to close quantitative fluency gaps for maths and sciences

Process and documentation coaching

Short, intermittent support for the parts of the MYP that are about recording thinking: design cycles, arts process journals, science method design and project planning. The work most students lose marks on and least often get help with.

  • Teaches habits rather than content, so a few sessions go a long way
  • Applies across design, arts, sciences and the Personal Project
  • No part of a submitted project is written or supplied by us

01

Ten questions that tell you whether a tutor knows the MYP

Use the first ten minutes of any conversation to test the thing that actually matters, rather than qualifications. A tutor who has taught the Middle Years Programme answers these without hesitation. A subject graduate who has read a syllabus summary will answer three or four and then generalise. The difference is worth more than any credential, and it costs you nothing to find out.

The questions are deliberately specific, because specificity is what cannot be bluffed. Asking whether somebody is familiar with the MYP produces a yes from everybody. Asking which four criteria apply in your child's subject group, and what a seven in criterion B looks like compared with a five, produces an answer that is either detailed or evasive within a sentence.

Two of the questions are about things that barely exist in other systems. Interdisciplinary units appear on MYP reports and are assessed against their own criteria, and almost no private tutor in Dubai has seen one. Approaches-to-learning skills, grouped into thinking, communication, social, self-management and research, are explicitly taught and referenced in feedback, and a tutor who has never had to teach them will treat a self-management problem as laziness.

The last question is the most useful. Ask what they would want to see before the first session. The right answer is the school's task sheet, the published criteria for that unit, and the student's last marked task with the teacher's comments. Anything else - a topic list, a textbook, a description of how the child is finding it - tells you the tutor is planning to teach a subject rather than to raise a criterion mark.

Criterion-referenced marking, and why a 5 is not a percentage

The single largest source of confusion for families in this community is the mark itself. In the MYP each subject is assessed against four criteria, each on a one-to-eight scale, giving a total out of thirty-two. That total is then converted into a grade from one to seven using published general boundaries. It is not an average, it is not a percentage, and a five does not mean sixty-two per cent of anything.

What follows from this is that the same child can look inconsistent across subjects for reasons that have nothing to do with effort. A student who is strong at criterion A, knowing and understanding, and weak at the criterion that asks them to investigate or design is averaging out at a four while being genuinely good at half the subject. A report that shows this looks like underachievement; read properly, it is a precise instruction about what to work on.

It also explains why generic tutoring produces so little movement in the MYP. More content teaching improves criterion A and leaves the others untouched, so the total barely shifts and the grade does not move at all. A parent who has paid for a term of weekly sessions and seen no change on the report has usually bought the wrong criterion, not a bad tutor. The fix is to identify the criterion that is dragging and work only on that.

The practical step for a family in Arabian Ranches 2 is to ask the school for the criterion breakdown rather than the grade, if the report does not already show it. Four numbers out of eight tell you where the work is. One number out of seven tells you nothing actionable, and it is the number most conversations about MYP tutoring begin and end with.

Interdisciplinary units: the mark nobody can explain

  • Assessed on disciplinary grounding, synthesising, and reflecting on interdisciplinary learning
  • At least one unit a year, and it appears on the report
  • Not a subject essay with extra material added from elsewhere
  • A tutor who raises it unprompted has almost certainly taught the programme

At least once a year an MYP student works on a unit that joins two or more subject groups, and that unit is assessed against its own criteria rather than the criteria of either subject. It appears on the report. Parents in this community routinely see that line, do not understand it, ask a tutor about it, and discover that the tutor has never heard of it either. That is the clearest single illustration of why subject expertise alone does not cover this programme.

What the unit asks for is specific. A student has to bring disciplinary grounding from each subject involved, synthesise it into something neither subject would produce alone, and then reflect on what the combination made possible. A history-and-science unit on water scarcity is not a history essay with some science in it, and a student who writes one scores poorly while believing they worked hard.

Supporting it well does not require a tutor who teaches both subjects. It requires somebody who understands the criteria and can hold a student to them: has each discipline genuinely contributed, is the synthesis doing work, and does the reflection discuss the interdisciplinary learning rather than the topic. Those are process questions, and they are answerable by one tutor who knows the programme.

For families weighing whether MYP support is worth buying at all, this is a useful test of the market. A tutor who asks about interdisciplinary units unprompted has taught the programme. A tutor who waits for you to raise it and then says they can look into it has not, and that is worth knowing before rather than after a term of sessions.

04

eAssessment at the end of MYP 5, and whether your child is sitting it

The first thing to establish is whether your child's school uses it at all. MYP 5 eAssessment is an option schools choose, leading to the IB MYP Certificate, and plenty of Dubai schools do not take it up. A family planning tutoring around on-screen examinations that their school does not enter students for is planning for the wrong thing entirely, and a single email to the MYP coordinator settles it.

Where a school does use it, the format is a mix. Some subject groups are assessed through on-screen examinations and others through ePortfolios of the student's own work, with an interdisciplinary on-screen examination and the Personal Project also forming part of the certificate requirements. That mix matters for tutoring because an on-screen examination rewards timed performance while an ePortfolio rewards curated process evidence, and those are different kinds of preparation.

For students sitting on-screen examinations, the useful work is familiarity rather than content: what the question types look like, how long there is, how to handle an unfamiliar stimulus under time. This is the first genuinely external, timed assessment many MYP students have faced, and the shock of it accounts for more lost marks than any gap in knowledge. Short timed practice, several weeks out, is the whole intervention.

For students assessed through ePortfolios, the work is documentation discipline: selecting the right evidence, showing the process rather than the outcome, and writing the reflective commentary that the criteria actually reward. Students who have strong practical ability and thin records lose marks here consistently, and it is fixable in a handful of sessions because the problem is a habit rather than an ability.

05

MYP 4, the narrowing, and the decision families make at fourteen

  • MYP 4 narrows subject choice and lengthens tasks - the criteria start to separate students
  • Stay for continuity into the Diploma; move for external examinations and a clearer mark
  • Decide on the destination and the child's response to feedback, not on tutoring supply
  • Ask the MYP coordinator what the school's MYP 5 route actually is before deciding

MYP 4 is where the programme changes character for most students. Subject choices narrow, work lengthens, and the gap between students who have internalised the criteria and those who have been producing content widens quickly. It is also the point at which families in this community start asking whether to stay in the MYP through MYP 5 or move to IGCSE, either within a school that offers both or by changing school entirely.

There is no general right answer, and anybody who offers one is not paying attention to your child. The argument for staying is continuity: a student heading for the IB Diploma in the same school carries forward the inquiry habits, extended production and reflective writing that the Diploma rewards, and avoids a disruptive change at fourteen. The argument for moving is clarity: external examinations, a familiar grade scale and a smaller gap between effort and visible mark.

What should drive the decision is the destination and the child's response to criterion-referenced feedback. A student who finds four numbers out of eight demoralising, and who works better towards a single clear mark, may genuinely do better on an IGCSE route. A student who thrives on open tasks and reflection will lose something real by leaving. Those are observations about your child rather than claims about either curriculum.

One thing not to let drive it is the availability of tutoring. The MYP is harder to support privately, and that is a real cost, but choosing a curriculum because help is easier to buy is the wrong order of priorities. A better response is to use the ten questions earlier on this page to find somebody who genuinely knows the programme, and to accept that it may be somebody who does not live anywhere near Arabian Ranches 2.

06

Service as action, the Community Project and the Personal Project line

  • Service as action runs across the programme; the Community Project sits in MYP 3 or 4
  • The Personal Project is assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting
  • A school-appointed supervisor oversees it; a tutor is not a substitute for one
  • Feedback on the student's own writing is permitted; supplied text is not

Three strands of the programme sit outside subject teaching and produce most of the questions we get from families in this catchment. Service as action runs throughout the MYP as an expectation that students act on what they learn. The Community Project sits in MYP 3 or MYP 4 depending on the school's model. The Personal Project sits at the end of MYP 5 and is assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting.

None of these needs a tutor in the ordinary sense, and families who hire one for them are usually buying the wrong thing. What students struggle with is process management: choosing a goal that is achievable, keeping a usable record while the work happens rather than reconstructing it afterwards, and writing reflection that discusses decisions rather than summarising activity. That is coachable in a small number of sessions and does not require subject expertise at all.

The boundary here is strict and worth stating plainly before any booking. A school-appointed supervisor oversees the Personal Project. A tutor may teach a skill the student needs, discuss how to plan, ask whether a claim is supported, and give feedback on writing the student has produced. No tutor may write the Personal Project, draft any section of it, or supply text that ends up in the submission. The same applies to the Community Project and to any assessed task.

This matters more in the MYP than parents expect, because so much of the assessment is coursework produced at home. An IB academic-honesty breach falls on the student, not on the tutor who offered to help, and the programme's whole point is that the thinking is the student's. Any tutor who offers to tidy a project into shape is offering something that puts your child at risk, and the correct response is to decline and find somebody else.

07

What MYP support costs, and what happens when nobody suitable is free

Published Dubai rates do not have an MYP tier, which tells you something in itself. The bands in this market are organised around examined curricula: budget online and university-student tutors advertise from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52; qualified online subject tutors sit at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200; IB specialists are quoted at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270; and premium named tutors reach AED 500 to 650 and beyond, with BartyED at AED 650.

For MYP work the honest guidance is that the specialist band is where genuine programme expertise sits, for the supply reasons set out at the top of this page, and that the budget band buys subject help that will improve criterion A and leave the others where they were. In-home visits are published at AED 180 to 500, with Bestimate's 2026 Dubai table at AED 180 to 350, and the increment over the online band is travel into Dubailand rather than better teaching. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE at all.

On availability, we would rather disclose a limit than fill a slot. MYP expertise in a specific subject group at a specific time is a narrow intersection, and there are weeks when we cannot cover a request from this community. When that happens we say so and set out the alternatives with rates attached: a different time with the right person, a weekend slot, a tutor outside the Gulf evening peak, or - genuinely - the advice that the school's own MYP coordinator is the better first call for this particular problem.

Private tutoring in the UAE is permitted work and the permit is free. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years, with eligible categories including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. MoHRE's own service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time. ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct does the same, so your child's own teacher privately is not an arrangement we will make.

What an MYP tutor cannot fix

Three problems get brought to MYP tutors regularly and none of them is solved by paid teaching. The first is a report a family cannot interpret. Four criterion scores out of eight, converted into a grade out of seven, with a comment about approaches-to-learning skills, is genuinely hard to read if nobody has explained the system. The answer is a conversation with the school, which costs nothing, and this page rather than a term of sessions.

The second is a mismatch between a child and criterion-referenced assessment. Some students find a four-part profile demoralising in a way that a single percentage would not be, and no amount of tutoring changes the assessment model. That is a real consideration in the decision at fourteen about whether to continue in the MYP or move to an examined route, and it belongs in a conversation with the school rather than in a purchase.

The third is organisation presented as ability. The MYP produces a lot of coursework at home, over long deadlines, with process evidence expected throughout. A student who cannot manage that will have low criterion marks across every subject at once, and more subject teaching does not touch it. Approaches-to-learning skills, particularly self-management and research, are the actual target, and they are coachable - but as a habit over a term, not as content in a session.

What MYP support genuinely does is narrower and more useful than the general version. It raises a specific criterion in a specific subject by working from the school's own task sheet and the student's last marked task. It closes the gap between criterion-assessed coursework and timed external assessment before the Diploma. And it teaches the documentation habits that the design cycle, the arts process journal and the science method all reward. Those are worth buying. A general sense that someone should help with the MYP is not.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Arabian Ranches 2

Where MYP schools sit relative to Arabian Ranches 2 is the practical constraint, and it is why a local search returns so little. The notes below describe the journey and the supply, not the neighbourhoods.

Arabian Ranches 2

No secondary school inside the community, and no MYP provision within walking distance of any cluster. Families here travel out to continuum schools across the city, which is exactly why the local private MYP market is close to empty rather than merely competitive.

The Sustainable City

Reached along Al Qudra Road and home to an IB continuum school, making it one of the shorter MYP runs available to this community. Even so, the teaching staff who know the programme are employed there rather than tutoring in the evenings.

Al Barsha South

Where several continuum and Diploma schools sit, and a common destination for MYP families from the Dubailand belt. The journey is long enough that an in-home tutor's travel premium is substantial and a visiting session rarely starts before 17:30.

Nad Al Sheba

Another long run from Arabian Ranches 2, taken for specific school places. Relevant to MYP planning because the returning journey consumes the only usable weekday hour, which pushes reflective and process work towards the weekend.

Dubai Hills Estate

Closer to the city with better secondary provision, which shortens the day. Useful as a comparison: the same programme, the same thin private market, but noticeably more usable evening for a family living there than one in Camelia or Azalea.

Motor City and Dubai Sports City

Mostly British-curriculum provision, which matters here as the alternative route. Families weighing whether to stay in the MYP through MYP 5 or move to IGCSE at fourteen are usually comparing a school in this belt with a continuum school further out.

Arabian Ranches and Arabian Ranches 3

The communities either side, with the same travel profile and the same supply problem. A quote for a Ranches 3 family looks identical, because what is scarce is the programme expertise rather than anything about the postcode.

DAMAC Hills, Mudon and Town Square

Comparable journeys along the Al Qudra Road corridor. MYP demand from these communities concentrates in mathematics, sciences and language acquisition, which are the three groups where criterion marking confuses parents most.

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the subject group and the MYP year

Sciences in MYP 3, mathematics in MYP 5, language acquisition phase 4. Subject group and year, or phase where it applies, decide which criteria are in play. A request for help with science is not actionable; a request for help with criterion B in MYP 3 sciences is.

  2. 02

Send the task sheet and the marked task

The school's own task sheet, the published criteria for that unit, and the student's last marked task with the teacher's comments. Those three documents are what a genuine MYP tutor asks for, and they make the first session useful rather than exploratory.

  3. 03

    Ask us the ten questions

The table earlier on this page exists to be used on us as well as on anybody else. If the tutor we propose cannot name the four criteria in your child's subject group and say what the criterion total converts to, tell us and we will propose somebody else.

  4. 04

Take the free trial and target one criterion

One free trial lesson per student, before any payment and with no card details taken. It ends with a written plan naming the single criterion being targeted, what the next four sessions do, and what a changed mark would look like on the next task.

  5. 05

Measure on the next marked task

Not on how the sessions felt. The honest measure of MYP support is the criterion score on the next task the school marks, and we will tell you plainly if the score has not moved and whether continuing is worth your money.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

An honest answer about supply

The MYP is the hardest syllabus in Dubai to staff privately, and the pool near Arabian Ranches 2 is thinner still. We say that on the page rather than implying a stock we do not hold, and when we cannot cover a request we tell you instead of filling the slot.

Matched by subject group and criterion

A mathematics graduate can teach quadratics and still not know what criterion B asks a student to produce. We match on the subject group and the criterion that is dragging, which is the only thing that moves an MYP grade.

Ten questions you can use on us

The test table on this page works on any tutor, including ours. Publishing it costs us the bookings we could not have served well, and it is the fastest way for a parent to tell a programme teacher from a subject graduate.

Work from the school's own task sheet

MYP assessment is task-based and internally moderated, so there is no past-paper shortcut. We start from the task sheet, the published criteria for that unit and the last marked task, because those are the documents the mark was actually awarded against.

A stated line on projects

A school-appointed supervisor oversees the Personal Project. A tutor may teach skills, discuss planning and respond to the student's own writing. No part of a submitted project is written or supplied by us, because an academic-honesty breach falls on the student.

Told when tutoring is not the answer

A report you cannot interpret, a mismatch with criterion-referenced assessment, or self-management presenting as weak ability are not problems paid teaching fixes. We will say so and point you at the MYP coordinator, which costs us a booking and saves you a term.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Arabian Ranches 2: your questions answered

Why can I not find an MYP tutor anywhere near Arabian Ranches 2?+

Because the pool is genuinely small. International Baccalaureate programmes account for around seven per cent of Dubai's private enrolment against thirty-seven per cent for UK curricula, only some IB schools run the full continuum including the MYP, and the teachers who know the programme are mostly employed teaching it. Add that there is no secondary school inside this community and the continuum schools are spread across the city, and the chance of a genuine MYP teacher living twenty minutes from your villa is low.

Is a good subject tutor enough for MYP, or do they need programme experience?+

Programme experience, for a specific reason. MYP subjects are assessed against four criteria, each marked one to eight, and a subject tutor improves criterion A, knowing and understanding, while leaving the other three where they were. The criterion total barely shifts and the report grade does not move, which is why families pay for a term and see nothing change. The tutor needs to have seen a marked task against the criteria, not just to know the subject.

How do four criterion scores turn into the grade on the report?+

Each of the four criteria is marked out of eight, giving a total out of thirty-two, and that total is converted into a grade from one to seven using published general boundaries. It is not an average and not a percentage. The practical consequence is that a child strong in two criteria and weak in two can look like a middling student while being genuinely good at half the subject, which is why the criterion breakdown is more useful than the grade.

What exactly does criterion B in MYP mathematics ask for?+

Investigating patterns asks a student to find a rule in an unfamiliar situation, test it against further cases, generalise it and justify the generalisation. That is a different activity from solving an exercise correctly, which is why students who are fluent at procedures often score a four or five on it. Supporting it means working through open investigations rather than more practice questions, and it needs a tutor who has marked one against the descriptors.

My child's report has a mark for something that is not a subject. What is it?+

Almost certainly an interdisciplinary unit. MYP students work on at least one a year, joining two or more subject groups, assessed against its own criteria covering disciplinary grounding, synthesising and reflecting on interdisciplinary learning. It is not one subject's essay with material from another added. Very few private tutors in Dubai have seen one, which is why a tutor who raises interdisciplinary units unprompted has almost certainly taught the programme.

What are approaches-to-learning skills and can a tutor actually teach them?+

They are five categories of skill the programme teaches explicitly: thinking, communication, social, self-management and research. They appear in feedback, and a weakness in self-management or research shows up as low criterion marks across every subject at once. They are coachable, but as habits built over a term rather than content delivered in a session, and a tutor who has not taught the programme will usually read a self-management problem as laziness.

Which questions should I ask before hiring an MYP tutor?+

Ask which four criteria apply in your child's subject group, what each is marked out of, how the total becomes a report grade, what a statement of inquiry is, what the five approaches-to-learning categories are, what an interdisciplinary unit is assessed on, and what they want to see before the first session. The right answer to the last one is the school's task sheet, the published criteria and the last marked task. A topic list is the wrong answer.

Does my child's school even use MYP eAssessment at the end of MYP 5?+

Many Dubai schools do not, and you should establish this before planning anything around it. MYP 5 eAssessment is an option a school chooses, leading to the IB MYP Certificate, combining on-screen examinations in some subject groups with ePortfolios in others, plus an interdisciplinary on-screen examination and the Personal Project. One email to the MYP coordinator settles whether your child is being entered, and a plan built on the wrong assumption wastes a term.

How should we prepare for on-screen MYP examinations if the school does use them?+

With timed familiarity rather than more content. For many MYP students this is their first external, timed assessment, and the shock of working to a clock against unfamiliar stimulus material accounts for more lost marks than any knowledge gap. Short timed practice several weeks out, with the question types and the time pressure made familiar, is the whole intervention. Students assessed through ePortfolios instead need documentation discipline, which is a different and equally short piece of work.

Should my child leave the MYP for IGCSE at fourteen?+

It depends on the destination and on how your child responds to criterion-referenced feedback. Staying through MYP 5 preserves continuity into the IB Diploma and the inquiry and extended-production habits it rewards. Moving to IGCSE gives external examinations, a familiar grade scale and a smaller gap between effort and visible mark. What should not drive the decision is that MYP tutoring is harder to buy, which is a real cost but the wrong priority.

Why does a strong MYP student sometimes struggle in the first term of the Diploma?+

Because the assessment changes character. The MYP rewards process, reflection and extended production assessed against criteria over long deadlines. The Diploma rewards precise performance against mark schemes in two-hour papers. A student with excellent criterion marks and no exam stamina can lose a grade in DP1 term one for that reason alone, and it is why a short block of timed practice in MYP 5 or the summer afterwards is worth more than it looks.

What may a tutor do on my child's Personal Project?+

Teach a skill the student needs, discuss how to plan the work, ask whether a claim is supported, and give feedback on writing the student has produced themselves. A school-appointed supervisor oversees the project and a tutor is not a substitute for one. What no tutor may do is write the Personal Project, draft any section of it or supply text that ends up in the submission. An academic-honesty breach falls on the student rather than on the tutor who offered.

My son is good at design but his mark is low. What is going wrong?+

Almost certainly the documentation rather than the product. MYP Design is assessed on inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution and evaluating, so the process evidence carries as many marks as the finished object. Students who build something good and record almost nothing lose marks in two or three criteria at once. The same pattern appears in Arts, where a thin process journal undermines strong practical work. It is a habit problem and fixable in a few sessions.

What does MYP support cost, and is there an MYP rate in Dubai?+

There is no published MYP tier, which is itself informative. The market bands are built around examined curricula: budget online tutors from roughly AED 45 to 150, with EdFlik from AED 45 to 65; qualified online subject tutors at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors listing IB from AED 200; IB specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270. Genuine programme expertise sits in the specialist band. The budget band buys subject help that moves one criterion.

What if no tutor who knows my child's MYP subject group is available?+

We will tell you, with the alternatives and their rates: a different time with the right person, a weekend slot, a tutor whose hours sit outside the Gulf evening peak, or sometimes the honest advice that your school's MYP coordinator is the better first call for that particular problem. Programme expertise in a named subject group at a named hour is a narrow intersection, and there are weeks when we cannot cover a request from this community.

Is there any point tutoring an MYP 1 or MYP 2 student?+

Rarely for content, often for the system. The real adjustment in the early MYP years is to criterion-referenced assessment itself, particularly for a child arriving from a British-curriculum primary or from the Primary Years Programme where no such scales existed. Teaching a student to read the descriptors and self-assess against them is worth a handful of sessions and pays back across every subject for five years. Weekly subject tutoring at that age usually is not worth buying.

Test us with the ten questions first

Send the subject group, the MYP year or phase, the school's task sheet and the last marked task with the teacher's comments. Then use the ten questions in the table above on whoever we propose - if they cannot name the four criteria in that subject group and say what the criterion total converts to, tell us and we will find somebody else. If the honest answer is that nobody suitable is free, or that your school's MYP coordinator is the better first call, we will say that instead. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with one free trial lesson per student before any payment.
