IB MYP Tutor in Al Khawaneej

Hiring an IB MYP tutor in Al Khawaneej is a spending decision before it is an academic one, and most families make it without seeing a single number. This page publishes the numbers. It sets out what the Dubai market charges per hour for Middle Years Programme support, what the travel premium on an in-home visit actually buys, and which four assessment criteria your money should be moving. Lessons from IB Gram run one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time.

  • AED rate bands published with the source that quoted them
  • Criterion A to D mark allocations named, not summarised
  • One-to-one lessons over live video, never a group class
  • A free trial lesson before any payment is taken

IB & IGCSE in Al Khawaneej

What MYP support in Al Khawaneej costs, and what the money is really for

Al Khawaneej is a villa district on Dubai's eastern edge, which has two consequences for a tutoring budget. The first is that almost nobody attends school inside the community: the morning run goes out to Mirdif, Al Mizhar, Al Rashidiya, Academic City or Dubai Festival City, and the evening return is the constraint on when a lesson can start. The second is that the tutors who will drive out that far price the drive into the hour. A parent comparing quotes is often comparing fuel and Dubai traffic, not teaching.

Middle Years Programme tutoring is also priced oddly across this market. Because MYP 1 to MYP 3 carry no external examination, agencies treat them as junior work and quote them cheaply. Because MYP 5 sits one year away from the Diploma Programme, the same agencies reprice it as exam coaching. Neither price reflects what the work actually is. MYP grades are produced by four published criteria per subject group, each marked out of eight, and a child loses marks in a specific one of those four. Diagnosing which is the entire job.

So this page is written as a cost page. It publishes the AED bands the Dubai market charges, attributed to whoever published them. It shows what an in-home visit adds once travel is counted. It lists, bluntly, the three ways Al Khawaneej families spend money on MYP support that changes nothing: buying more hours in a subject that is already passing, buying homework supervision and calling it tutoring, and paying a premium for a tutor who has never read a criterion descriptor.

The honest position on delivery comes first, because it changes the arithmetic. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Every UAE lesson is one-to-one over live video. That is not a compromise dressed up as a feature. It is why a child in Al Khawaneej 2 can work with a Sciences specialist who has taught criterion C for years, instead of whoever was willing to drive past Mushrif Park at six in the evening.

What follows is organised to be read by someone with a calculator open. Rate bands first, then the waste, then the four criteria your invoice should be buying, then the Personal Project timeline counted backwards, then the permit question every UAE parent should ask and almost none do. Nothing here is a price list for IB Gram, and nothing here is a market average dressed up as a quote. Where our own cost matters, the answer is a free trial lesson followed by a conversation, because a sensible number depends entirely on how many subject groups are actually in trouble and how many weeks the weak criterion needs. One group for six weeks and three groups for a year are different products at different prices, and no honest provider can tell you which you need before looking at a marked piece of work.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Al Khawaneej children sit across three IB programmes depending on which school the morning run reaches. The notes below say what each stage demands and what a tutor can realistically change inside it, with the local detail that decides whether support is worth buying this term.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

The PYP is transdisciplinary: children work through units of inquiry rather than separate timetabled subjects, and reporting is written against learner-profile attributes instead of percentages. There are no external examinations and no criterion marks. The useful tutoring targets at this stage are narrow and mechanical: number fluency, reading stamina, and the written structure a child will need the moment MYP criteria start being applied to their work.

In the eastern suburbs the PYP is offered principally at Uptown International School in Mirdif, which runs the full continuum. Families in Al Khawaneej 1 and 2 who intend to stay on an IB track usually make the decision at this point, because moving from a British primary into MYP 1 means meeting criterion-referenced marking for the first time with no transition year.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1 to MYP 5

Middle Years Programme

Five years, eight subject groups, and four assessment criteria per group marked 0 to 8. Tasks are set against a statement of inquiry and a global context, and the final grade on a report is a conversion from criterion totals, not an average of test scores. This is why a child can revise hard and see nothing move: the marks were lost in investigating or in communicating, and more content revision does not touch either.

MYP 5 is where Al Khawaneej parents usually call. The Personal Project lands in the same year as the first serious conversation about Diploma subject choices, and a child juggling both while travelling thirty minutes each way to school has very little slack. Starting support in MYP 4 costs the same per hour and removes the scramble.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Assessment is mostly external, sat in the May session that UAE schools use, with internal assessment contributing a fixed share of each subject grade. Higher Level is not Standard Level with extra homework: it carries additional syllabus content and, in several subjects, an additional paper.

Deira International School and Universal American School, both reachable from Al Khawaneej via Dubai Festival City, offer the Diploma. The practical point for an MYP family is that Higher Level choices made at the end of MYP 5 are difficult to reverse after the first term, so the diagnostic work belongs in MYP 5, not in Year 12.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

A smaller IB route combining DP courses with a career-related study, a reflective project and a personal and professional skills course. It suits a student who wants IB rigour in two or three subjects alongside an applied qualification rather than the full six-subject Diploma, and it is assessed through a mix of DP external papers and course-specific coursework.

The CP is offered by a small number of Dubai schools and is rarely the reason an Al Khawaneej family looks for a tutor. It matters here mainly as a fallback worth naming: a student struggling with the full Diploma load has routes other than dropping out of IB entirely, and a tutor should say so rather than sell more hours.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

MYP marks are awarded by subject group, and each group has its own four criteria with its own failure mode. The notes below name the criterion letters as a child's teacher uses them, because that is the language on the report you are trying to change.

MYP Mathematics

Standard and Extended, MYP 1-5

Criterion A knowing and understanding, B investigating patterns, C communicating, D applying mathematics in real-life contexts, each out of 8. Most lost marks sit in B and D: students can calculate but cannot generalise a pattern into a rule, or they solve a real-life task without ever stating what the model assumes.

MYP Sciences

Integrated and discrete, MYP 1-5

Criterion A knowing and understanding, B inquiring and designing, C processing and evaluating, D reflecting on the impacts of science. Criterion B is where marks vanish: a hypothesis with no scientific reasoning behind it, or a method that never names the controlled variables, caps the mark regardless of how good the practical was.

MYP Language and Literature

English, Arabic and other first languages

Criterion A analysing, B organising, C producing text, D using language. Strong readers routinely lose criterion A because they summarise plot instead of analysing how a writer's choices produce an effect. That is a technique problem with a short fix, not a reading-ability problem.

MYP Language Acquisition

Phases 1-6

Marked by phase rather than year group, with criteria covering listening, reading, speaking and writing. A child placed in the wrong phase will look weak on paper while doing nothing wrong. Checking the phase against the descriptors is the first thing a tutor should do, and it costs one session.

MYP Individuals and Societies

History, geography and economics strands

Criterion A knowing and understanding, B investigating, C communicating, D thinking critically. Criterion D separates the grade 5 from the grade 7: evaluating a source's reliability and recognising a counter-argument, rather than listing what happened in order.

MYP Design

Product and digital design

Criterion A inquiring and analysing, B developing ideas, C creating the solution, D evaluating. Students lose most heavily on A and D, because the design cycle rewards documented research and honest testing against stated specifications, not the quality of the finished object.

MYP Arts

Visual arts, music, drama

Criterion A knowing and understanding, B developing skills, C thinking creatively, D responding. The process journal carries the marks. A student with real talent and a thin journal will be marked below a methodical peer, which parents often read as unfair marking rather than a documentation gap.

MYP Physical and Health Education

MYP 1-5

Criterion A knowing and understanding, B planning for performance, C applying and performing, D reflecting and improving performance. Half the available marks are written. A sporty child can sit well below their performance level because the planning and reflection components were treated as paperwork.

MYP Interdisciplinary units

All years

Assessed separately on evaluating, synthesising and reflecting across two subject groups. These units are frequently the lowest marks on an MYP report because no single teacher owns them, and students treat them as a project rather than an assessed task with its own descriptors.

MYP Personal Project

MYP 5

Assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting, with a process journal and a report. It is the student's own work throughout. A tutor may teach project planning, question the scope and give feedback on drafts; no tutor writes the report or supplies the product.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways an Al Khawaneej family can buy MYP support, with the cost consequence of each stated plainly. All of them run over live video on Gulf Standard Time; none of them involves a tutor at a UAE address.

Weekly one-to-one in a single subject group

One 60-minute session a week in the subject group where the criterion marks have dropped, held at a fixed time so it survives the school run. This is the cheapest arrangement that reliably moves a grade, because it buys diagnosis followed by repeated practice against one set of descriptors rather than general revision across eight groups.

  • Fixed weekly slot, usually 17:00 or later for Al Khawaneej addresses
  • Work graded against the same criterion wording the school uses
  • Written feedback after each session naming the criterion targeted
  • Reviewed after six weeks against the school's own reporting

Two subject groups, two shorter sessions

Where a report shows losses in two groups, two 45-minute sessions on different evenings cost less than two full hours and fit an activity schedule better. It works when the underlying problem is shared across the two groups, which is common: criterion C in Sciences and criterion C in Mathematics both reward structured communication of a method.

  • Two separate evenings rather than one long block
  • Shared skill work where the criteria overlap
  • Useful for MYP 3 and MYP 4 before subject choices narrow
  • Scheduling handled per child, not per household

MYP 5 project and transition block

A short, finite block of sessions around the Personal Project and the Diploma subject decision. The project half teaches planning, scoping and reflective writing; the transition half tests whether a proposed Higher Level choice is realistic given current criterion performance. The student owns every word of the project throughout.

  • Project planning, scoping and process journal discipline
  • Draft feedback on the student's own writing only
  • Honest assessment of Higher Level readiness per subject
  • Ends on a date, rather than rolling on indefinitely

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Khawaneej

01

What an IB MYP tutor in Al Khawaneej costs per hour

  • Budget online, university-student tutor: AED 45 to 150 an hour (EdFlik, Tutopiya)
  • Qualified subject tutor, online: AED 150 to 300 an hour (Unitors)
  • In-home one-to-one including travel: AED 180 to 500 an hour (Bestimate and independents)
  • IB or IGCSE specialist: AED 200 to 450 and above (Bestimate, TutorChase)
  • Premium named or examiner-led: AED 500 to 650 and above (BartyED)

Market rates for Middle Years Programme support in Dubai run roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour for a qualified subject tutor working online, and roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour for an in-home visit once travel is priced in. Those bands are not ours. They are drawn from what Dubai providers publish: EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to 65 for budget online work, Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52, Unitors from AED 150 for IGCSE and AED 200 for IB, TutorChase at AED 270, and Bestimate's Dubai rate table at AED 200 to 450 and above for specialist exam-level work, with in-home visits at AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors quoting AED 200 to 500.

The spread is wide because the word tutor covers three different products. At the bottom sits a university student checking homework, which is a supervision service and priced accordingly. In the middle sits a trained subject teacher who can mark against the criteria. At the top sits a specialist in one subject group at one level, usually with examining or senior teaching experience. For MYP 1 to MYP 3, the middle tier is normally sufficient. For MYP 5, where the Personal Project and the Diploma decision land together, the middle tier is where most of the useful work gets done too, which is worth knowing before anyone sells you the top of the range.

Monthly packages circulating in this market give a second reference point. Online blocks of eight sessions appear at around AED 799 a month; in-home blocks of four two-hour sessions appear at AED 1,599 to 1,799. Bestimate's own monthly estimate for a single weekly hour runs AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. IB Gram publishes no fixed price list for the UAE, because a sensible figure depends on how many subject groups are genuinely in trouble. The trial lesson is free, and the number comes after it.

02

Why MYP is priced below the Diploma, and when that pricing is wrong

  • MYP 1-2: low stakes, low urgency, keep spending small and specific
  • MYP 3-4: the diagnostic window, where a weak criterion is cheapest to fix
  • MYP 5: Personal Project and Diploma choices land together, so slack disappears
  • Year 12 onwards: the same weakness now costs specialist rates for a full year

Agencies discount MYP work because there is no external examination to point at. No exam, no stakes, cheaper hour. That logic holds for MYP 1 and MYP 2, where the real purpose of support is habit formation and the cost of waiting a term is close to zero. It stops holding somewhere in MYP 4, and by MYP 5 it is simply wrong, because two things with permanent consequences happen in that year: the Personal Project is completed and the Diploma subject choices are made.

The Diploma decision is the expensive one. A student who picks Higher Level Chemistry on the strength of a grade 6 that was carried by criterion A, with criterion C sitting at 3, will meet the Higher Level internal assessment eighteen months later with the exact weakness nobody addressed. Fixing that in Year 12 costs specialist rates for a full academic year. Diagnosing it in MYP 4 costs a term of ordinary sessions. Same weakness, very different invoice, and the cheap version is the early one.

There is a mirror-image error worth naming, because Al Khawaneej families make it often. A child in MYP 2 with one weak report triggers four subjects of tutoring, four afternoons a week, at a point in the programme where the marks carry no forward weight at all. That is a large monthly spend buying reassurance. The defensible version is one subject group, one session, six weeks, and a review against the school's next report before any extension.

03

Three ways Al Khawaneej families waste money on MYP tutoring

The first is buying hours in the subject the child already passes. It happens because that subject is the one the child will tolerate being tutored in. A report showing grade 6 in Mathematics and grade 4 in Individuals and Societies very often produces Mathematics tutoring, because the student agrees to it. The money is spent, the household is calmer, and the grade that was falling keeps falling.

The second is paying tutoring rates for homework supervision. A tutor who sits with a child while they finish set work is providing a useful babysitting-plus service and should be priced as such, somewhere near the bottom of the market band. Charged at AED 250 an hour for a year, it becomes a significant line in the household budget with no criterion mark attached to it. The test is simple: ask which criterion letter last week's session targeted. If the answer is not a letter, you are not buying tutoring.

The third is the travel premium, and in Al Khawaneej it is the largest of the three. An in-home visit from a tutor based in Jumeirah or Dubai Marina is an hour of teaching inside two and a half hours of the tutor's working day, and the rate reflects it. The same money online buys either more frequent contact or a genuinely narrower specialist. The comparison table further down this page sets that out line by line, including what the drive actually costs in tutor-pool terms rather than only in dirhams.

The four criteria your invoice should be buying

Every MYP subject group is marked against four criteria, lettered A to D, each scored from 0 to 8. The four add to 32, and the school converts that total into the 1 to 7 grade that appears on the report. The conversion is the reason parents find MYP reporting opaque: a child can lose a whole grade band while answering more questions correctly than last term, because the loss came from one criterion that content revision never touches.

This is also where a tutor earns the rate. A competent MYP tutor opens the first session by asking for the breakdown, not the grade. If the school publishes criterion marks on the report, the weak letter is visible immediately. If it does not, two pieces of recent marked work show it clearly enough. In Sciences the usual culprit is criterion B, inquiring and designing, where a hypothesis without scientific reasoning or a method that never names controlled variables caps the mark no matter how carefully the experiment was run.

In Mathematics the pattern differs. Criterion A, knowing and understanding, is usually fine in Dubai schools because it is what classwork drills. Criterion B, investigating patterns, is where students stop: they can compute terms but cannot generalise to a rule and justify it. Criterion D, applying mathematics in real-life contexts, is the other common gap, and it is a writing problem as much as a maths one, because the marks sit in stating assumptions and evaluating whether the model was sensible. Both respond quickly to targeted practice, which is why naming the letter matters more than adding hours.

Counting the MYP 5 Personal Project backwards from submission

The Personal Project is the only piece of MYP work with a deadline a family will remember years later, and it is assessed on planning, on applying skills, and on reflecting. Not on the quality of the object produced. A student who builds something impressive and documents it thinly scores below one who sets a modest goal, records the process honestly and reflects on what went wrong. Parents consistently find this counter-intuitive, and it is the single most useful thing to understand before paying anyone for project support.

Schools set their own internal deadlines, usually with a proposal in the first term of MYP 5, supervisor check-ins across the year, and a report plus process journal extracts at the end. The failure mode is predictable: a student chooses a goal in October, does nothing until the holidays, and then writes a report about a process that was never recorded. The process journal cannot be reconstructed afterwards without it being obvious, and the marks for applying skills and reflecting depend on it existing contemporaneously.

What a tutor may do here is narrow and should be stated plainly, because this is where some providers in this market cross a line. A tutor may teach project planning, challenge a goal that is too broad to evidence, model what a reflective entry looks like, and give feedback on the student's own draft. No tutor writes the report, supplies the product, or edits a draft into something the student could not have produced. IB academic honesty rules make the student's authorship the point of the exercise, and a breach is the student's problem, not the provider's.

Online versus an in-home tutor driving out to Al Khawaneej

This is the comparison the search term implies, so here it is without evasion. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that service exists only in India. The case for online delivery to Al Khawaneej therefore has to stand on its own merits, and in this particular community it is unusually strong for reasons of geography rather than ideology.

Al Khawaneej sits at the eastern limit of the city. A tutor travelling from Jumeirah, Dubai Marina or Business Bay at the hour a school child is free will spend forty to sixty minutes each way. That tutor has to charge for the trip, directly or by quoting a rate that absorbs it, and will only accept a slot that justifies the journey, which is why in-home bookings in the eastern suburbs cluster into inconvenient times and collapse when traffic does. The tutor pool shrinks to those willing to make the drive, and willingness to drive is not correlated with knowing criterion B in MYP Sciences.

Online, the pool is everyone available at Gulf Standard Time who teaches that subject group. A session can start at 17:30 after a Festival City school run without anyone budgeting for the return leg. Two siblings on different timetables can both be taught on the same evening. Written work is screen-shared and annotated live, which for criterion C in Mathematics is better than a tutor leaning over a notebook. Nothing here requires pretending that online suits every child; it requires being honest that for this postcode the trade-offs favour it.

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies alongside the MYP

  • Mandatory regardless of the licensed international curriculum
  • Separate classes required for Arabs and non-Arabs in three of the subjects
  • Instructional time counted in 40-minute units, minimum 25 minutes advised per lesson
  • No additional content without prior Ministry of Education permission

Every private school in Dubai teaches Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies regardless of which international curriculum it is licensed to deliver, and KHDA's mandatory-subjects guidelines required implementation by the start of the 2025-26 academic year, or April 2026 for schools whose year begins in April. MYP families frequently discover this as a surprise on a report card, because the subject sits outside the eight MYP groups and is sometimes reported separately.

The rules are more specific than most parents realise. KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and states that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arabs and for Arabic as a first language; Social Studies for Arab students is taught primarily in Arabic; non-Arabs study Islamic Education and Moral, Social and Cultural studies in the school's licensed-curriculum language.

Two further details matter for planning support. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided total weekly time is met, and KHDA advises that any mandatory-subject lesson runs at least 25 minutes. And for these subjects the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is strictly prohibited, which means tutoring here is consolidation of the school's own material rather than an alternative scheme. Schools must also ensure teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic have the appropriate approval from KHDA to teach them, which is a credential a parent can reasonably ask about.

08

Is the tutor you are about to pay actually permitted to teach here?

Private tutoring in the UAE runs on a permit. Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 introduced private tuition work permits, issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, and the permit is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18 and university students. MoHRE's own service page, Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system.

The consequence parents should act on: individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so no amount is quoted here. What is publishable is that the permit is free and takes two working days, which removes any excuse a tutor might offer for not holding one. Asking is not rude. It is the one compliance question in this market with a clear, cheap, documented answer.

A second rule applies in Abu Dhabi and is worth knowing even from Dubai, because tutors move between emirates. Press reporting of ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff describes a prohibition on teachers providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, with the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also barring service to students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document before relying on it, and never arrange for a child's own classroom teacher to be paid privately for the same subject.

What happens when no MYP specialist is free

No tutoring platform covers every subject group at every level at every hour, and claiming otherwise is how families end up with a mismatched tutor in week one. For MYP work the common gaps are predictable: Design, Arts and Physical and Health Education are requested far less often than Mathematics and Sciences, so the pool of tutors who genuinely know those criterion descriptors is thinner, and Language Acquisition in a less common language can take longer to staff.

The honest process when that happens has three steps. The first is to say so, with an estimate of how long a match will take rather than a vague reassurance. The second is to offer the nearest useful alternative and name it as an alternative: a Sciences specialist can do a great deal for a Design student whose problem is criterion A research, because the underlying skill is the same, but a family deserves to be told that is what is happening. The third is to decline the booking where neither applies, which is less profitable and considerably better for everyone.

This also governs who teaches. Where no UAE-based specialist covers a niche MYP subject group, the match may be a specialist elsewhere teaching over the same live video on Gulf Standard Time. That is disclosed before anything is booked, not discovered later from an accent or a timezone slip. Nothing about the delivery changes, because nothing about the delivery was ever in-person in the UAE.

Where we tutor

Al Khawaneej and the eastern suburbs we serve online

These are the communities whose MYP families share the same school run and the same evening constraint. The notes are operational rather than descriptive: what the commute does to a session start time, and which schools each pocket actually feeds.

Al Khawaneej 1

Older villa plots close to Al Khawaneej Road and Mushrif Park. School runs head west to Mirdif and Al Mizhar, so a child is rarely home before 16:15. A 17:00 or 17:30 start is realistic; 16:00 is not.

Al Khawaneej 2

Newer villas and the Last Exit stretch, further from Al Awir Road. Families here often drive to Academic City or Festival City, adding a further fifteen minutes each way, which pushes a sensible weekday session to 17:30 or later.

Mirdif

The school cluster itself: Uptown International School, Star International School Mirdif and GEMS Royal Dubai School sit here. Children attending locally can start at 16:00, which is why Mirdif and Al Khawaneej siblings often need different slots.

Al Mizhar

Quiet villa community bordering Al Khawaneej, feeding the same Mirdif schools plus Al Mizhar American Academy. Short commutes, but heavy after-school activity schedules mean two fixed weekday slots are easier to hold than four flexible ones.

Al Rashidiya

Closer to Dubai Airport and the Metro Green Line, with a mixed school pattern across Deira and Festival City. Traffic around Casablanca Road at pickup is the variable that breaks a 16:30 booking.

Al Warqa

Dense mid-rise and villa mix south-west of Al Khawaneej, feeding Al Qusais and Mirdif schools. Families here frequently run two children on different timetables, which online scheduling handles and a single visiting tutor cannot.

Nad Al Hamar

Between Al Rashidiya and Mirdif, with quick access to Ras Al Khor Road. Short school runs, but the community has very few resident subject specialists, so online delivery widens the tutor pool considerably.

Dubai Festival City

Home to Deira International School and Universal American School, both of which draw MYP and DP students out of Al Khawaneej daily. Return traffic over Business Bay Crossing is why a 17:30 session holds better than a 16:45 one.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Khawaneej

Mirdif, Al Mizhar and Al Khawaneej

The schools most Al Khawaneej MYP students attend. Uptown International School is the IB continuum school in this cluster, running PYP, MYP and the Diploma on one site, which is why MYP criterion language is familiar to families here and completely new to those arriving from a British primary.

  • Uptown International School
  • Star International School Mirdif
  • GEMS Royal Dubai School
  • Al Mizhar American Academy
  • Dubai Modern Education School

Dubai Festival City, Al Rashidiya and Academic City

The second ring of the eastern school run, reached from Al Khawaneej in twenty-five to forty minutes depending on the hour. Deira International School and Universal American School both carry IB Diploma cohorts, so MYP 5 students from this area often already know which Year 12 they are heading for.

  • Deira International School
  • Universal American School
  • Dubai English Speaking College
  • GEMS Our Own English High School, Al Warqa
  • The Westminster School, Al Qusais

Schools are named as local context for families comparing options; IB Gram has no affiliation with, and claims no endorsement from, any school listed.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the report, not the worry

Share the most recent MYP report and two pieces of marked work. Criterion letters on the report shorten diagnosis to minutes. Without them, two marked tasks in the weak subject group do the same job. Describing the problem in words is the slowest route and the one most likely to point at the wrong subject.

  2. 02

Agree the slot against the school run

For an Al Khawaneej address this usually means 17:00 or later on a weekday, and earlier on a Saturday. Fixing the time before choosing the tutor avoids the common failure where a good match is agreed and then quietly abandoned because the slot never worked.

  3. 03

    Take the free trial lesson

The trial is a diagnostic session, not a sales call. By the end you should have a named criterion, an explanation of why marks are lost there, and a view on how many weeks the repair takes. If none of that arrives, the match is wrong and should be changed before money moves.

  4. 04

Run six weeks, then check the school's own marks

Six weeks is long enough for a criterion score to move and short enough that a bad match is not expensive. Review against the school's reporting rather than the tutor's impression, then extend, change subject group, or stop.

  5. 05

    Stop when the mark holds

Open-ended tutoring is how a reasonable monthly spend becomes a permanent one. When the weak criterion has held at the target level across two assessments, end the block. Coming back for the MYP 5 project and the Diploma decision is cheaper than never leaving.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Criterion-level diagnosis, not general revision

MYP grades are produced by four lettered criteria per subject group. Support that does not name which letter it is targeting is revision with a tutor attached. Every session here starts from the weak criterion and the marked work that shows it.

Published market rates, attributed

The AED bands on this page come from named Dubai providers and from Bestimate's Dubai rate table, with each figure attached to whoever published it. We do not quote them as our prices, and we do not pretend a market has no prices because it suits us.

One-to-one over live video, stated plainly

Every UAE lesson is one-to-one on live video at Gulf Standard Time. Home visits are a service we run only in India. Saying that clearly costs us some enquiries and saves every family that would otherwise have been disappointed.

A clear line around assessed work

A tutor teaches, questions and gives feedback on the student's own drafts. No tutor here produces a Personal Project, an Internal Assessment or an Extended Essay. Several providers in this market blur that line; an IB academic-honesty finding falls on the student.

The permit question asked out loud

The MoHRE private tuition work permit is free and takes two working days, so there is no reasonable excuse for a tutor not holding one. We publish the rule, the resolution it comes from and the official application route rather than hoping nobody asks.

Coverage limits disclosed before booking

Where no specialist covers a niche MYP subject group, you are told, given a time estimate, and offered either a named alternative or an honest decline. Nobody is quietly matched to a tutor who has never read the relevant criterion descriptors.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Khawaneej: your questions answered

What does an IB MYP tutor in Al Khawaneej charge per hour?+

Market rates for Middle Years Programme support in Dubai run roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour online for a qualified subject tutor, and AED 180 to 500 an hour for an in-home visit once travel is included. Those bands come from published provider rates: Unitors from AED 200 for IB, TutorChase at AED 270, Bestimate's Dubai table at AED 200 to 450 and above for specialist work. Budget online options sit lower, from AED 45 to 65 at EdFlik. IB Gram publishes no fixed UAE price list, because the right figure depends on how many subject groups are genuinely weak. The trial lesson is free and the quote follows it.

Why do Al Khawaneej agencies quote MYP hours below Diploma hours?+

Usually yes, by roughly AED 50 to 100 an hour at the same tutor tier, because there is no external examination to coach for. That discount is reasonable in MYP 1 to MYP 3 and misleading in MYP 5, where the Personal Project and the Diploma subject decision both land. A weak criterion identified in MYP 4 costs a term of ordinary-rate sessions to fix. The same weakness discovered in Year 12 costs specialist rates for a full academic year. The cheap moment to buy MYP support is earlier than most families choose.

Why has my child's MYP grade dropped when their test scores went up?+

Because MYP grades are not averages of test scores. Each subject group is marked against four criteria, A to D, each out of 8, and the total out of 32 converts to the 1 to 7 grade on the report. A child can answer more content questions correctly and still lose a grade band if the marks were lost in, say, criterion B in Sciences, where a method that never names controlled variables caps the score. Ask the school for the criterion breakdown. The weak letter explains the drop in a way the grade never will.

Which MYP criterion do students in Dubai lose most marks on?+

It varies by subject group, and that is the point. In Sciences it is criterion B, inquiring and designing: hypotheses without scientific reasoning, methods missing controlled variables. In Mathematics it is B and D, investigating patterns and applying maths in real-life contexts, both of which require generalising and justifying rather than calculating. In Language and Literature it is criterion A, analysing, where strong readers summarise plot instead of examining a writer's choices. In Individuals and Societies it is criterion D, thinking critically. None of these improve with more content revision.

Can a tutor help with my child's MYP Personal Project in Al Khawaneej?+

Within clear limits, yes. A tutor may teach project planning, challenge a goal too broad to evidence, demonstrate what a reflective journal entry looks like, teach the research or technical skill being applied, and give feedback on the student's own draft. No tutor writes the report, supplies the product or edits a draft into something the student could not have produced. The project is assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting, so the process journal has to be the student's own contemporaneous record. Reconstructing it afterwards is visible to any experienced supervisor.

What time can an Al Khawaneej MYP lesson realistically start on a weekday?+

For most Al Khawaneej 1 addresses, 17:00 is the earliest that holds reliably. School runs leave the community for Mirdif, Al Mizhar, Al Rashidiya or Academic City, so a child is rarely home before 16:15, and Al Khawaneej 2 families driving to Festival City should plan for 17:30. Families whose children attend locally in Mirdif can manage 16:00. Fixing the slot before choosing the tutor matters more than it sounds: the usual reason a good match quietly fails is a time that never actually worked.

Do you send an MYP tutor to our villa in Al Khawaneej?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; that service runs only in India. Every UAE lesson is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. For this community that is usually the better trade anyway: a tutor travelling from central Dubai spends forty to sixty minutes each way at exactly the hour your child is free, and prices the journey into the rate. Online, the pool is every specialist available at your time, and a 17:30 start costs nobody a commute.

How many sessions a week does an MYP student in Al Khawaneej need?+

One, in one subject group, is the defensible starting point. The common error here is four subjects across four afternoons in MYP 2, which is a large monthly spend buying reassurance at a stage where the marks carry no forward weight. Where a report shows two weak groups, two shorter sessions on separate evenings cost less than two full hours and fit an activity schedule better. Review after six weeks against the school's own marks, then extend, switch subject group, or stop. Open-ended weekly hours are how a sensible spend becomes permanent.

Does my child still have to study Arabic and Islamic Education on the MYP?+

Yes. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in every Dubai private school regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA required implementation by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. The rules are detailed: separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in three of the subjects, Standard Arabic as the language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arabs, and no additional content without prior Ministry of Education permission. Tutoring in these subjects consolidates the school's own material rather than substituting an alternative scheme.

Does my MYP tutor need a UAE permit, and how do I check?+

Yes. Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 introduced the private tuition work permit, issued by MoHRE, granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time via its app, website and e-services. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no schedule of amounts is published. Ask to see the permit before the first paid session.

Is MYP eAssessment something we need to budget for?+

Only if your child's school offers it. MYP eAssessment is the optional route to the IB MYP Certificate, combining on-screen examinations with moderated ePortfolios, and many Dubai schools do not use it at all. Ask the school directly before buying anything described as eAssessment preparation. Where a school does run it, the useful support is practice under on-screen conditions and portfolio discipline rather than extra content, which is a short finite block rather than a year of weekly hours.

My child is in MYP 4 and we are deciding Higher Level subjects. Is tutoring worth it now?+

This is the highest-value moment to buy support, and most families miss it. A grade 6 carried by criterion A with criterion C sitting at 3 looks like a safe Higher Level choice and is not: the same weakness meets the Diploma internal assessment eighteen months later, at specialist rates, with an external deadline attached. A term of ordinary sessions in MYP 4 either closes the gap or tells you honestly that a different Higher Level choice is wiser. Both outcomes are worth more than the invoice.

Do you teach MYP Design and Arts, or only maths and science?+

Both, but availability differs and pretending otherwise would waste your time. Mathematics, Sciences and English Language and Literature are well covered and usually matched within a few days. Individuals and Societies takes about a week. Design, Arts and Physical and Health Education are requested less often, so the pool of tutors who genuinely know those criterion descriptors is thinner and a match can take a week or more. Where no specialist is free, we say so, offer a named subject-adjacent alternative, or decline rather than deliver a mismatch.

What should I ask a prospective MYP tutor before paying anything?+

Four questions settle it. Which criterion letter are we targeting, and what evidence points there? What will you do differently from what the school already does? Do you hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit? And what will you not do with the Personal Project? A tutor who answers the first with a grade rather than a letter has not read the descriptors. One who hesitates on the fourth is selling something that puts your child's IB registration at risk, not tutoring.

Are Dubai school fees rising, and does that change the tutoring budget?+

KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. For a household budget that means the tutoring line is not competing with a fee rise this year. It also means the market has little pressure to discount, so the AED bands published above are a reasonable planning assumption rather than a ceiling to negotiate down from.

Start with one criterion, one subject group, and a free trial lesson

If you have an MYP report with criterion marks on it, that document is most of the diagnosis. Send it with two pieces of marked work from the weakest subject group, tell us what time the Al Khawaneej school run actually ends, and take the free trial lesson. You should finish it knowing which lettered criterion is costing the grade, why, and roughly how many weeks of one-to-one work it takes to move. Lessons run over live video on Gulf Standard Time. If we cannot staff the subject group properly, we will say so rather than book you in and improvise.
