IGCSE Tutor near me in Al Khawaneej

When a parent types IGCSE tutor near me in Al Khawaneej, the question underneath it is rarely about distance. It is whether anybody within reach actually knows the syllabus their child is sitting, since two neighbours in this community can be entered for different boards in the same subject. This page gives you five questions that settle it in one phone call. IB Gram matches on syllabus and teaches one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Five questions that reveal whether a tutor knows the actual syllabus
  • Board differences set out, not merged into the word IGCSE
  • Tutor permit position explained so a parent can verify it
  • Coverage disclosed per board and code, never per subject name

IB & IGCSE in Al Khawaneej

The question underneath 'near me'

A parent in Al Khawaneej who searches for a tutor nearby is almost never worried about the drive. The worry is competence, and specifically whether anyone within reach knows the exact qualification their child is sitting. That worry is well founded. The word IGCSE on a school report covers several different qualifications from several different boards, and the schools this community feeds do not all use the same one. Two Year 11 students living on the same street can be sitting different syllabuses in the same subject, with different papers and different practical arrangements.

Local adverts rarely resolve it. A notice in a community group offering IGCSE science tuition is making a claim about a subject, not about a syllabus, and the gap between those two things is where a term gets wasted. A tutor who learned the content on one board teaches the chemistry competently and prepares the student imperfectly for the paper, because the question styles, the command-term conventions and the way practical skills are assessed are not identical between boards.

There is a second reason local supply is thinner than it looks. The people who know a particular syllabus best in this part of Dubai are employed full time teaching it, which means the ones available on a weekday evening are a small subset, and for a less commonly taught subject or a particular board the subset can be empty. That is not a criticism of anybody. It is arithmetic, and it explains why a family can search diligently for a fortnight and find only approximate matches.

This page answers the question honestly rather than flattering it. It sets out how the boards differ, gives five questions that establish in one phone call whether a tutor knows your child's syllabus, explains what a parent can verify about a tutor's legal standing in the UAE, and describes what a syllabus specialist does that a generalist cannot. It also states plainly what IB Gram does: matching is on the board and the code, and teaching happens one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, because in-home visiting is a service offered only in India.

The useful consequence of teaching over video is precisely the one this page is about. Once the hour does not require anybody to drive to Al Khawaneej, the question stops being who is nearby and becomes who teaches this syllabus. For a family that has spent two weeks looking for a local specialist in a particular board and code, that is not a sales argument. It is the difference between finding one and not. Everything below is written so you can use it on any provider, including this one.

At a glance

  • IGCSE is several qualifications from several boards, not one qualification
  • Neighbours in the same year group can be sitting different syllabuses
  • A local advert names a subject; your child is entered for a code
  • Five questions settle a tutor's syllabus knowledge in one call
  • Teaching over video changes the question from who is near to who knows
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

An Al Khawaneej family will meet IGCSE as part of a route, and the route determines which grades matter and at which tier. These are the stages the local schools run.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

International General Certificate of Secondary Education

Two years of study ending in terminal papers set by an international board. Candidates generally take eight or nine subjects, some tiered into Core and Extended entry, and the papers, practical arrangements and grading conventions depend on which board the school uses. The code on the statement of entry is the only reliable description of what will be examined.

Dubai had 227 private schools offering seventeen different curricula in 2024-25, with UK-curriculum schools holding the largest enrolment share at thirty-seven per cent. That mixture is exactly why a board question cannot be answered by naming a neighbourhood.

AS/AAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

AS and A Level

The usual sixth-form route in this catchment. Science and mathematics A Levels assume Extended-tier IGCSE content, so the tier a student is entered for at fourteen has consequences at sixteen. Boards at A Level need not match the board used at IGCSE, which surprises families who assume continuity.

Ministry of Education British-track equivalency requires one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or above, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade, alongside five accredited IGCSE or GCSE subjects at grade E or 3 or above.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

The alternative route for students moving into an International Baccalaureate school at sixteen. Receiving schools commonly expect Extended-tier IGCSE science and mathematics grades before admitting a student to Higher Level courses in those subjects, so the entry tier matters here as well.

International Baccalaureate programmes accounted for seven per cent of Dubai private-school enrolment in 2024-25. An Al Khawaneej family considering the switch should ask the receiving school which IGCSE grades and tiers it expects, in writing, before Year 11 entries are fixed.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the IGCSE subjects Al Khawaneej families ask about, with a note on how much the board actually changes the teaching in each. In some subjects it changes a great deal and in others very little.

Mathematics

Core and Extended, or Foundation and Higher

Board differences are real here: tiering language, calculator conventions and the structure of the papers vary. A tutor who knows the wrong board will teach correct mathematics and mis-set the practice, which is a quiet and expensive kind of error.

Physics

Core and Extended

Content overlaps heavily between boards, but the practical assessment arrangement and the style of extended questions differ. The practical component is where a board mismatch shows up most sharply, because the question patterns are board-specific.

Chemistry

Core and Extended

Similar picture: shared content, differing paper structure and practical arrangements. Mole arithmetic is board-neutral and is where most marks are lost anyway, which makes it the safest place for a near-match tutor to start.

Biology

Core and Extended

The most content-heavy of the three sciences and the most command-term sensitive. Mark-scheme conventions about what counts as an explanation differ enough between boards to matter in the final weeks of preparation.

English as a First Language

Core and Extended

Assessment structures differ noticeably between boards, including the balance of directed writing and composition. This is a subject where asking which board the tutor has actually marked work for is worth doing explicitly.

English Literature

Single tier

Set texts are chosen by the school from the board's list, so the question to ask is not only the board but which texts. A tutor who knows the board and not the texts is of limited use in the final year.

Business Studies

Single tier

Terminology precision carries the marks and the terminology is largely shared across boards, which makes this one of the subjects where a near match does least damage. Case-study style still differs and is worth checking.

Computer Science

Single tier

Programming language expectations and the practical component vary between boards, sometimes substantially. This is among the worst subjects in which to accept an approximate match, because the assessed artefact is board-defined.

Arabic as a first or additional language

Varies by school and background

Mandatory in Dubai private schools whatever the licensed curriculum, taught in separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs, and with KHDA requiring its own approval for teachers of the subject. It is excluded from the five-subject count for British-track equivalency.

Economics

Single tier

Diagram conventions and the weight given to evaluation differ between boards enough to affect how a student should practise. Content is broadly shared, so a near match can teach it while the exam technique needs board-specific work.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements, all matched on board and syllabus code and all taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

Syllabus-matched weekly teaching

The standard arrangement: one subject, one board, one tutor, one slot a week. The matching is done on the code rather than the subject name, which is the whole argument of this page, and the tutor works from the student's own returned papers so the teaching tracks the school rather than running beside it.

  • Matched on board and syllabus code before anything is scheduled
  • Works from the student's own marked scripts
  • Practice material sourced from the school and the board
  • Slot placed inside the family's real evening window

A second opinion on the paper

A short block for families who suspect the teaching is fine and the exam technique is not. The tutor reads marked scripts against the board's own conventions and reports what is costing marks. It often ends with a recommendation that no ongoing tutoring is needed, which is a legitimate outcome.

  • Two or three sessions with a written finding at the end
  • Board-specific conventions checked explicitly
  • May conclude that no further tutoring is warranted
  • Useful before committing to a term of weekly sessions

Private candidate support

For students sitting a paper outside their school's entry, whether a resit or an extra subject. The tutoring is ordinary; the administration is not, and the work includes making sure the family knows which questions only a registered exam centre can answer.

  • Teaching matched to the board the candidate will actually sit
  • Clear separation between what we do and what a centre does
  • Timeline built backwards from the centre's own entry deadline
  • No claim to arrange, host or influence any entry

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Al Khawaneej

Each profile names the board and the syllabus the tutor teaches rather than the subject alone. That is deliberate: it is the piece of information families most need and the one hardest to get from a local advert or a message in a community group.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Khawaneej

01

The boards are not interchangeable

Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel both award international GCSE qualifications, other awarding bodies operate in the UAE as well, and the schools around Al Khawaneej do not all use the same one. Treating them as a single qualification called IGCSE is the mistake that makes a local search feel successful and then disappointing. The content overlap is genuinely large, which is why a mismatch is not obvious in week one. The differences live in the papers.

Specifically: the structure and number of papers differs, the tiering arrangements and the language used to describe them differ, practical skills in the sciences are assessed by different means, the modular or linear arrangement of assessment can differ, and the mark-scheme conventions about what earns an explanation mark are not identical. A student practising to the wrong conventions will write answers that would score on another board's scheme, which is a particularly cruel way to lose marks.

The table below gives the comparison a parent can actually use, with the proviso that board arrangements are revised and the board's own current documentation is the authority. The practical instruction is simple: establish the board and the code from the statement of entry, then ask every prospective tutor which board and which code they teach. A specific answer is a good sign. A general answer about IGCSE experience is, for this purpose, a no. Ask the same question of the school as well, because a school occasionally moves board between year groups and the Year 11 answer is not always the Year 10 answer.

Five questions that settle it in one phone call

You do not need to understand a syllabus to find out whether somebody else does. Five questions, asked in order, separate a syllabus specialist from a competent generalist in about four minutes, and they work whether the person is around the corner or teaching from another city.

Ask which board and which syllabus code they teach for this subject. A specialist answers with the code. Ask how the practical or non-written component is assessed on that syllabus, because a tutor who has prepared candidates will describe it without hesitation. Ask what the commonest reason is that students lose marks on a specific paper in that subject, and listen for whether the answer is about mark-scheme behaviour or about students not working hard enough. Ask what they would want to see before the first session; the right answer involves a marked script. And ask what they will not do, which should produce a clear statement about coursework and assessed work.

The table lays out what a good answer sounds like against a weak one. The point is not to catch anybody out; plenty of good tutors are generalists and will say so, which is itself a useful answer. The point is that a family in Al Khawaneej spending real money for a term deserves to know which they are buying before the first invoice rather than in the eighth week. Asking them of a tutor already working with your child is also legitimate, and the answers explain a great deal.

FIVE QUESTIONS, AND WHAT THE ANSWERS TELL YOU
Ask thisA strong answer sounds likeA weak answer sounds like
Which board and syllabus code do you teach for this subject? The code, immediately, and the tier arrangementBroad reassurance about years of IGCSE experience
How is the practical or non-written component assessed?A specific description of the component and its patternsA general comment about laboratory work
Where do students most often lose marks on that paper?Mark-scheme behaviour: command terms, units, conversionsThat students do not revise enough
What do you want to see before the first session?A recent marked script with the teacher's commentsNothing in particular; we will start at the beginning
What will you not do?A clear line on coursework and assessed workAn offer to help with whatever is needed
03

Why the nearby pool is smaller than it looks

  • No large secondary IGCSE entry sits inside the community itself
  • The people who know the syllabus are teaching it full time
  • Each added condition, board, tier, evening slot, halves the set
  • A distance filter is what produces approximate matches

Al Khawaneej sits at the eastern edge of the city. The community holds primary provision and a Dubai Schools campus, and its secondary students travel out to Mirdif, Al Warqa, Al Qusais or further. The people in this part of Dubai who know a particular IGCSE syllabus well are, for the most part, the people teaching it at those schools, and they are employed full time.

Work the arithmetic through for a specific case. A family needs a tutor for a particular science syllabus on a particular board, able to teach at Extended tier, available on a weekday evening, and willing to be in or near Al Khawaneej. Each condition removes most of the remaining candidates. By the end of the list the set is often one person, and sometimes none, which is exactly the experience families report after two weeks of asking in community groups.

This is why local searches in this catchment end in approximate matches. The alternatives on offer are a tutor who knows the subject but not the board, a tutor who knows the board but is only free at a time nobody can attend, or an undergraduate at the budget end who sat the qualification recently and has never read a mark scheme as a marker. None of those is dishonest. They are what a distance filter leaves behind. Removing the distance filter is the only move that genuinely enlarges the set, and that is what teaching over live video does.

04

What a parent can verify about a tutor's standing in the UAE

Beyond syllabus knowledge there is a legal question, and it has a clear answer that most families never hear. The UAE regulates private tutoring through a work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. The service is listed as Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, applied for through the Ministry's smart app, website and e-services system, with no fee stated and a two-working-day completion time. The permit is granted free of charge and lasts two years.

The categories eligible to hold it are published and broad: teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. Anyone providing private tutoring without the permit is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so a figure quoted to you as a deterrent is unverified and should be treated that way rather than repeated.

The table turns that into something a parent can use. Two further points belong here. A tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai requires a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, which is a separate instrument with its own process and renewal; an individual's work permit is not that, and nobody should describe themselves as KHDA approved on the strength of one. IB Gram holds no KHDA permit, has no UAE premises and makes no such claim. And press reporting on Abu Dhabi's professional-ethics rules indicates school staff there may not take paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, with the permit's code of conduct pointing the same way; verify current wording with the authority before relying on it, and in any case do not arrange for your child's own teacher to tutor them for money.

05

What a syllabus specialist does that a generalist cannot

  • A specialist diagnoses mark-scheme behaviour, not just wrong content
  • Board-specific weighting tells you where revision time belongs
  • Conventions decide marks on answers that look correct
  • None of this depends on the tutor being nearby

The difference shows up in the detail of a marked script. A generalist reads a wrong answer and explains the correct content. A specialist reads the same answer and says that the content was right, the command term was not addressed, and the scheme awards nothing for a description where it asked for an explanation. The student in the second case has learned something transferable; the student in the first case has learned the answer to one question.

Three further things belong to the specialist. Knowing which topics are heavily weighted on this board's papers and which appear rarely, so revision time goes where the marks are. Knowing the conventions, such as how many distinct differences a two-mark comparison needs or whether a unit is required in a particular style of answer. And knowing the tier boundary well enough to say whether a student entered at the lower tier is being limited by the entry rather than by their ability.

None of this requires the specialist to be nearby. All of it requires them to know the specific syllabus. That is the whole claim of this page, and it is why IB Gram matches on board and code and teaches over live video rather than recruiting whoever is willing to drive east on a Tuesday. A shared whiteboard with the student's own script on screen covers everything this kind of work needs, and the hour starts when your child is ready rather than when a car arrives.

06

Private candidates, centres and the questions only a centre can answer

Some Al Khawaneej families need a paper their child's school is not entering them for: a resit, an extra subject, or a qualification taken outside the school timetable. The teaching for that is ordinary tutoring. The administration is not, and it is worth being clear about which parts a tutoring provider can and cannot do.

Entry for a private candidate is made through a registered examination centre, and the centre sets the deadlines, charges the fees and administers the papers. A tutoring provider does not arrange entries, cannot influence them and should not imply otherwise. The questions to take to a centre are which series it accepts private candidates for, what the entry deadline is, which syllabuses and components it can offer, and how practical or non-written components are handled for a candidate who is not taught there. Boards publish centre information on their own sites and that is the right starting point.

Timing is the part families get wrong. An entry deadline sits months before the paper, so a decision about a resit has to be made a long way in advance of the point at which it feels urgent. Cambridge International runs June and November series for international candidates, with an additional early-year series offered to India only, so a UAE candidate plans around June and November. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May and June and in November; its November 2026 final timetable ran to 19 November 2026, June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students the following day, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Provisional timetables are published ahead of each series and can be revised, so work from the live official timetable rather than from any date restated here.

07

Starting, and the coverage we disclose by syllabus

Send three things and the first conversation is a real one. The statement of entry, giving the board, the syllabus code and the tier. The most recent marked script with the teacher's comments intact. And the realistic weekday time your child is able to work, which for a student travelling home across eastern Dubai is later than families expect.

Then a free trial lesson, one-to-one over live video. Use the five questions on this page during it. Ask the tutor to work through the marked script against the board's own conventions and name what is costing marks. A specific answer, grounded in the scheme rather than in general advice about revision, is what you are paying for and you should be able to hear it inside an hour. If the match is wrong, say so in week one.

The disclosure, stated before you ask. Coverage is held per board and per syllabus code, not per subject name, and there are genuinely weeks when no UAE-based specialist in a particular code holds an evening slot that fits an Al Khawaneej timetable. Where that happens you will be told, and offered a specialist based elsewhere teaching the same syllabus over the same live video on Gulf Standard Time. What will not happen is a tutor for one board being presented as a specialist in another, because that is the exact failure this page exists to prevent. No competitor page reviewed for this project discloses a coverage limit at all.

Where we tutor

Why the local pool is smaller than a map suggests

The notes below are about supply rather than distance: who is actually available, in which board, in each of these directions.

Al Khawaneej 1 and 2

Residential at the city's eastern edge, with primary provision and a Dubai Schools campus but no large secondary entry inside the community. The number of people living here who teach a specific IGCSE syllabus is, realistically, very small.

Mirdif

The nearest school cluster and the best local source of teachers, all of whom are employed full time. Supply exists on paper and is largely unavailable on a weekday evening, which is the honest version of local availability.

Al Mizhar

Adjacent and sharing the same school list. A family searching across both communities is searching one pool rather than two, which is worth knowing before concluding that the next neighbourhood will be better served.

Al Warqa

Large schools with large IGCSE entries, so more teachers of the common syllabuses. Less helpful for a less commonly taught board or subject, where cohort size does not translate into specialist availability.

Al Qusais

Substantial entries and long journeys. The practical effect for a family here is that a locally based tutor would still arrive late, so the supposed advantage of proximity does not survive contact with the evening.

Dubai International Academic City

The source of much of the budget tutoring supply. An undergraduate who sat the qualification recently knows the content and usually not the mark scheme, which is the distinction the five questions below are designed to expose.

Dubai Silicon Oasis

Growing secondary provision and heavy evening traffic. Any arrangement requiring somebody to cross it on a weekday will either start late or be priced for the inconvenience, and frequently both.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Establish board, code and tier

From the statement of entry or the front page of an issued past paper. These three facts decide which tutor is a match and which is an approximation, and they take five minutes to confirm with the school's exams officer if the paperwork is unclear.

  2. 02

Use the five questions on anybody you consider

Board and code, how the practical component is assessed, where marks are most often lost on that paper, what they want to see before the first session, and what they will not do. Four minutes, and it separates a specialist from a generalist.

  3. 03

    Send a marked script

The most recent one, with teacher comments left on. A specialist reads it against the board's conventions and can tell you what is costing marks. Without it, the first session is an introduction rather than a diagnosis, which is a wasted hour you have paid for.

  4. 04

    Free trial, judged on specificity

One hour over live video. The answer you are listening for is grounded in the mark scheme rather than in general advice about working harder. If it is specific enough to repeat to your child in two sentences, book the first block.

  5. 05

Review at four sessions against evidence

A marked piece of work with fewer marks lost to the named cause. If that evidence is missing, change the method or the tutor rather than adding hours, and expect a provider to say so rather than sell you more time.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched on code, not on subject

The board and syllabus code are established before anything is scheduled. Competitor pages reviewed for this project name almost no syllabus codes at all, which is how a family ends up with correct teaching aimed at the wrong paper.

The verification questions are published

Five questions that establish a tutor's syllabus knowledge are set out here for use on anybody, including us. A page that hands a parent the test it should be judged by is more useful than a page that asserts quality.

Honest about local supply

The nearby pool in this catchment is small, and each added condition of board, tier and evening availability shrinks it further. Saying so is more useful than implying a dense local network that does not exist.

Permit position set out so it can be checked

The MoHRE private tuition permit, its two-year validity, the fact that it is free, the eligible categories and the absence of a published fine schedule. Only one competitor page reviewed touches tutor licensing at all.

No claim to any accreditation

IB Gram has no UAE premises, holds no KHDA Educational Services Permit and claims no board or regulator approval. A KHDA permit is a specific instrument issued to training institutes with premises, and nobody should imply one without it.

Coverage disclosed by syllabus

Where no UAE-based specialist in your child's code can fit your week, you are told and offered a specialist elsewhere on Gulf Standard Time. A tutor for one board is never presented as a specialist in another.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Khawaneej: your questions answered

Is there anyone in Al Khawaneej who teaches my child's exact IGCSE syllabus?+

Possibly, and the honest answer is that the set is small. The community holds primary provision and a Dubai Schools campus rather than a large secondary entry, and the people in this part of Dubai who know a specific syllabus well are mostly teaching it full time at schools in Mirdif, Al Warqa or Al Qusais. Add a board, a tier and a weekday evening requirement and the available set often reduces to one person or none. Removing the distance condition is the only move that genuinely enlarges it.

How do I check whether a tutor really knows the syllabus my child sits?+

Ask five questions. Which board and syllabus code do you teach for this subject. How is the practical or non-written component assessed on it. Where do students most often lose marks on that paper. What do you want to see before the first session. And what will you not do. A specialist answers the first with a code and the third with mark-scheme behaviour rather than a comment about revision. It takes about four minutes and it works on anybody, including us.

Does it really matter whether a tutor knows Cambridge or Edexcel?+

The content overlap is large, which is why a mismatch is not obvious early. The differences live in the papers: their number and structure, the tiering arrangements and what they are called, how practical skills in the sciences are assessed, whether assessment is linear or modular, and the mark-scheme conventions about what earns an explanation mark. A student practising to the wrong conventions writes answers that would score on another board's scheme, which is a particularly unkind way to lose marks in a real paper.

Where do I find my child's syllabus code?+

On the statement of entry the school issues, on the entry confirmation, or on the front page of any past paper the school has given your child. If none of those is to hand, email the school's exams officer rather than the class teacher; it is the exams officer's record and they can answer in a line. Ask in the same email which tier your child is entered for where the syllabus is tiered, because that answer is not reversible once the series has been sat.

Do tutors in Dubai need a licence, and can I check it?+

Private tutoring in the UAE requires a work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. It is granted free of charge for two years, and the eligible categories include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. You can ask a tutor directly whether they hold it. Anyone tutoring without it is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published.

Can my child's own schoolteacher tutor them privately for money?+

Treat it as something to avoid. Press reporting on Abu Dhabi's professional-ethics rules indicates that private and charter school staff there may not provide paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the Ministry permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Verify current wording with the relevant authority before relying on the detail. The practical position for a Dubai family is straightforward enough: do not arrange it, however convenient the familiarity appears.

Is a nearby generalist better than a syllabus specialist teaching online?+

For most families in this catchment, no, and the reason is what each can see in a marked script. A generalist reads a wrong answer and explains the correct content. A specialist reads the same answer and reports that the content was right, the command term was not addressed, and the scheme gives nothing for a description where it asked for an explanation. The second is transferable to every future paper. Proximity adds nothing to that, and in this catchment it subtracts the evening a tutor would spend driving.

My child wants to resit one IGCSE subject. How does that work?+

Entry for a candidate sitting outside their school's arrangement is made through a registered examination centre, which sets the deadlines, charges the fees and administers the papers. A tutoring provider does not arrange entries and cannot influence them. Ask a centre which series it accepts private candidates for, what the entry deadline is, which syllabuses and components it offers, and how non-written components are handled. The boards publish centre information on their own sites, and the entry deadline sits months before the paper.

Which IGCSE series should an Al Khawaneej candidate plan around?+

Cambridge International runs June and November series for international candidates, with June the main sitting and November available as a resit route. Its additional early-year series is offered to India only, so it does not apply here. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May and June and in November. Cambridge also allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones with a different timetable version each, and its guidance states that using the wrong zone timetable is the centre's risk. Your exams officer holds both facts.

What should I listen for in a trial lesson?+

Specificity about the mark scheme. A tutor working through your child's marked script should be able to say which convention cost the mark, not simply what the right answer was. Listen also for what they ask for: a request to see marked work before the session is a good sign, and an offer to start at the beginning of the syllabus usually means no diagnosis has happened. You should finish able to repeat the finding to your child in two sentences.

Why did a local tutor seem fine for six weeks and then stop helping?+

The usual explanation is a board mismatch that only becomes visible under exam conditions. Content teaching goes well because the content overlaps, and the problem surfaces when timed papers begin and the student meets question structures and conventions they have not practised. The second common explanation is that no diagnosis was ever done, so the sessions covered what the student already half knew. Both are preventable with the five questions on this page, asked before the first invoice rather than in week eight.

Does a tutor need to know my child's set texts as well as the board?+

In literature, yes, and it is worth asking separately. Schools choose set texts from the board's list, so two centres on the same board can be teaching different texts. A tutor who knows the board but not the texts is of limited use in the final year, when the work is detailed quotation and argument on specific material. Ask which texts they have taught and when. In most other subjects the board and the code are sufficient to establish a real match.

Can one tutor cover a subject if my child changes board mid-course?+

It happens, usually with a school move, and it needs care rather than panic. The content largely transfers; the practice does not. The work is a deliberate audit of what differs, paper structure, tiering, practical arrangements and conventions, followed by timed practice on the new board's papers rather than the old ones. A tutor who teaches both boards is ideal. A tutor who teaches only the previous board is the specific risk this situation creates and is worth replacing rather than persevering with.

What should an Al Khawaneej family send before an IGCSE trial lesson?+

The statement of entry showing board, syllabus code and tier. The most recent marked script with the teacher's comments intact, which is where any real diagnosis comes from. And the realistic weekday time your child can work, measured rather than estimated, since a student travelling home across eastern Dubai is ready later than families assume. With those three things the trial hour does work instead of making introductions, and you can judge the tutor on something specific.

Ask about the syllabus, not the distance

The nearby pool in Al Khawaneej is small, and most of what it contains is approximate: the right subject on the wrong board, the right board at an impossible hour, or somebody who sat the qualification recently and has never read a mark scheme as a marker. Establish the board, the code and the tier, then put the five questions on this page to anybody you consider, including us. Send a marked script and take the free trial as a diagnostic. Teaching is matched on syllabus and delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.
