IB IGCSE Tutor near me in Dubai

Searching for an IB IGCSE tutor near me in Dubai is really two questions wearing one coat. The first is practical: can somebody reach us, or can we reach them, at an hour a teenager can work. The second is the one that decides the grade: can this person show, in writing, that students like mine stopped losing the marks they were losing. This page answers the first in a table and spends the rest of its length on the second, because an evidence file is the only thing in this market that has ever predicted a result.

  • An annotated script, not a score, after every piece of marked work

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Near me is a logistics question. The grade is an evidence question.

A Dubai parent types tutor near me for sound reasons. The evening is short, the roads are full between five and seven, and a plan that needs somebody to cross the emirate twice a week will fail by the third week whatever anybody promises. Proximity is a real constraint and this page is not going to pretend it is irrational. It will, though, separate it from the thing families usually confuse it with, which is quality.

Here is the separation. Proximity determines whether a session happens at all in the in-home model, and nothing else. It does not determine whether the tutor has taught your child's specification, whether they mark to the board's scheme, whether anything is written down between sessions, or whether the errors identified in September have closed by December. Those four things determine the grade, and none of them has an address. Over video, proximity stops being a constraint at all, which is what makes the other four the only questions left.

So the useful reframe is this: instead of asking who is near me, ask what should exist in my hands after four weeks, and then buy from whoever can produce it. The answer is specific. An annotated script with marks awarded and withheld at named points. A timed attempt with the minutes recorded per question, not just the total. A short written note after each session saying what the hour changed. And by week four, three named causes of mark loss, ranked, each labelled content, method or timing.

That file is also the thing that makes the school take you seriously. A Dubai Year 11 parent who arrives at a consultation evening saying their child is struggling gets sympathy. A parent who arrives saying their daughter is losing method marks on structured algebra questions, here are four scripts showing it, and we are drilling it weekly, gets a different conversation and sometimes a different set. In a class of twenty-five, the specific request is the one that gets acted on. That is not a trick and it is not adversarial. A head of department with a hundred and fifty students is making decisions on the information in front of them, and a dated folder of scripts is simply better information than a worried sentence at the end of a long evening. The file is there to inform the school, never to argue with it.

Everything below is built around that file: what proximity does and does not buy, a twelve-week evidence ledger, how to read a marked script the way an examiner reads it, how to tell real grade movement from noise, how drafts of an internal assessment work as evidence without crossing the academic-honesty line, what a weekly note should contain, and the questions that expose a tutor who has no evidence to show. Lessons here run one to one over live video; IB Gram does not provide home visits in the UAE, where home visiting is a service we offer only in India.

At a glance

  • Proximity decides whether a visit happens, not whether teaching works
  • The four things that decide the grade: specification match, marking, written output, error closure
  • Week four deliverable: three named causes of mark loss, ranked and labelled
  • Timed papers need minutes per question recorded, not just a total mark
  • The evidence file is what makes a school conversation specific enough to act on

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

What counts as evidence differs by programme, because the assessed objects differ. Below is what a tutor should be able to show you at each stage.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE and Pearson International GCSE

Terminal written papers, marked against published schemes, with tiering decisions in several subjects. Evidence here is straightforward and plentiful: past papers exist in quantity, mark schemes are published to centres, and a script can be annotated mark by mark. There is no excuse for a tutor at this level who cannot show marked work.

In Dubai the tiering decision makes evidence urgent rather than merely useful. Entries close months before the exam, and a school will move a student between Foundation and Higher, or Core and Extended, on evidence rather than on a parent's confidence. Four annotated scripts at the higher tier, with the dates on them, is the document that changes that decision. An opinion at a consultation evening is not.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Written papers plus internal assessment worth about a fifth of most subject grades, an extended essay and theory of knowledge. Evidence has two halves: timed paper performance, and the process trail behind each piece of internal work, which the school also expects to see.

Diploma evidence in Dubai gets complicated by predicted grades, which schools issue for university applications and which families often treat as a verdict. A predicted grade is a professional judgement made at a point in time; what moves it is marked work after that point. Tutors do not issue predicted grades and should never imply they can influence one, but a file of timed scripts is exactly what a teacher reviews when asked to look again.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Criterion-referenced tasks across eight subject groups, four criteria per subject scored from one to eight, plus the personal project in the final year with planning, applying skills and reflecting marked at eight marks each.

Evidence at this stage is about the process journal as much as the product, and it is where Dubai students most often lose marks they had already earned. A thin journal makes the reflecting criterion impossible to award however good the project is. A tutor's contribution is to make the student record as they go, which is coaching rather than production, and the journal stays entirely the student's own.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below is what credible evidence looks like in each subject, because a marked essay and a marked maths paper prove different things and should be read differently.

Mathematics (0580, 4MA1)

Core and Extended, Foundation and Higher

The clearest evidence in any subject. A script shows exactly where method marks were available and whether working appeared. Count the marks lost to missing working across four papers and you have a number that either falls or does not.

Physics (0625, 4PH1)

Core and Extended, single tier

Look at the six-mark extended responses specifically. Evidence of progress is a causal chain appearing where three unlinked statements used to be, and it is visible to a parent without any physics knowledge at all.

Chemistry (0620, 4CH1)

Core and Extended, single tier

Procedural marks make good evidence because they are binary: the equation balanced or it did not, state symbols were there or absent. A tally across four papers is the fastest honest progress measure in the sciences.

Biology (0610, 4BI1)

Core and Extended, single tier

Progress shows in data and graph questions before it shows in recall questions. Watch for answers that describe a trend before explaining it, which is a structural change rather than a knowledge one and happens quickly.

English Language

First Language and Specification A

Evidence here is annotated text, not a grade. Look for the student naming a method and commenting on its effect, and for shorter embedded quotations replacing long retold extracts across successive pieces.

English Literature

Closed and open text

Compare two essays six weeks apart and count the paragraphs that start with a technique rather than with a plot event. That single count tracks the grade more faithfully than any mark out of thirty.

Economics and Business

IGCSE and DP SL or HL

Diagrams make excellent evidence because they are either correct, labelled and shifted or they are not. Keep the marked diagram sheets; the improvement curve in these subjects is usually steep and visible within a fortnight.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

DP HL and SL

Timed paper data matters more here than anywhere, because Higher Level students frequently know enough for a 6 and produce a 4 on timing alone. Minutes per question is the column to watch.

Internal assessment and coursework

DP and IGCSE coursework routes

Evidence is the draft history and the feedback trail: criteria referenced, questions asked, changes made by the student. The work stays theirs throughout, and a trail that shows their own decisions is both better evidence and the only legitimate kind.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes, chosen by what evidence you need next rather than by a package. All run over live video, all produce something written.

Diagnostic block

Two or three sessions whose only output is the week-four deliverable, produced early: three named causes of mark loss from your child's own work, ranked, each labelled content, method or timing. Many Dubai families buy nothing else for a term afterwards, because the list is enough for the school to act on and for the student to work with.

  • Mixed past-paper questions rather than one topic
  • Marked live, so the student watches the scheme being applied
  • A ranked written list with an estimate of time to fix each
  • Usable directly in a conversation with the school

Weekly teaching with a marked cycle

An hour a week, about thirty minutes of marked work between sessions, and a full timed paper every two or three weeks once an exam series is in view. This is the shape that produces the twelve-week ledger below, and the ledger is what tells you whether to continue, change shape or stop.

  • A fixed slot on Gulf Standard Time
  • Annotated scripts keyed to mark-scheme wording
  • Minutes per question recorded on timed attempts
  • A short written note after every session

Marking and feedback only

No live teaching: the student sits papers at home, sends them in, and receives them annotated with a short commentary. The cheapest way to keep an evidence file running through a quiet term, and the most under-used purchase in this market. It suits a self-directed Year 10 or 11 student who needs calibration rather than instruction.

  • Two papers a fortnight is a realistic volume
  • A running tally of recurring errors across scripts
  • Converts to live sessions if a content gap appears
  • Keeps the diagnosis current at a fraction of a teaching rate

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What proximity actually buys in Dubai

Take the near-me question seriously enough to answer it properly. The table lists what families are really trying to secure when they search that phrase, says whether being close helps with each, and names what actually determines it instead. Three of the seven rows are genuinely improved by proximity. The other four are not, and two of them are made worse by it, because a short list of nearby tutors is a short list.

The rows worth reading twice are the subject-match ones. For mainstream Year 10 mathematics or Year 11 biology, enough people teach those in this emirate that proximity costs you almost nothing. The arithmetic changes at the edges: further pure mathematics, Higher Level chemistry, an unfamiliar Pearson code, Arabic first language for a student who moved streams, or diploma economics with a key-concept evaluation problem. Those are exactly the cases exam-year families need, and they are where a twenty-minute radius leaves you choosing from almost nobody.

There is also a cost to getting this wrong that does not show up until January. A family hires the best nearby option in September, the match holds for a term while the work is general, and then the work gets specific and the tutor cannot follow it. Changing tutor mid-year costs four to six weeks of rebuilding in the most expensive term of the year, which is why the evidence questions in this page's later sections are worth asking in September rather than in February.

None of that argues against convenience. It argues for ordering the questions correctly: specification and level first, evidence second, hour of the evening third, and geography only where it still matters after those three. Over video the fourth question disappears entirely, which is the honest reason this site exists rather than a claim that screens are inherently better than rooms.

02

The twelve-week evidence ledger

Below is what should exist, and when, if tutoring is working. It is deliberately a ledger rather than a promise: each row names an artefact, how to read it and the red flag that tells you something is wrong. Nothing in it requires you to understand the subject, which is the point. A parent who cannot do quadratics can still see whether the number of marks lost to missing working fell between September and November.

Week four is the decision point and it should be treated as one. By then you either have three named, ranked causes of mark loss from your child's own work, or you have an impression that things are going well. The first is a product. The second is a feeling, and it is the single most common reason Dubai families spend a full term discovering that the tutoring was pleasant and ineffective. If week four produces nothing nameable, change the tutor or the shape rather than adding hours.

Week twelve is where you should see closure rather than activity. The same three errors, tracked across dated scripts, should be measurably less expensive. Not absent, because habits regress under pressure, but cheaper. If the errors are the same size in December as in September while the sessions continued weekly, the diagnosis was wrong or the work between sessions was not happening, and both of those are fixable conversations rather than reasons to abandon the plan.

Keep every artefact in one folder, dated. It takes no effort and it does three jobs: it makes the four-week and twelve-week tests possible, it hands a replacement tutor a diagnosis on day one if the first one becomes unavailable, and it is the document that makes a Dubai school conversation specific rather than general.

WHAT SHOULD EXIST, WEEK BY WEEK, ACROSS ONE TERM
Point in the termThe artefactHow to read itThe red flag
Free first lessonA short note on what was covered and observedDid your child write or speak for most of the hour?A note that describes the tutor's plan and not the child's work
Week 1A marked diagnostic set across mixed topicsAre errors clustered, or scattered at random?A percentage with no annotation
Week 2An annotated script keyed to mark-scheme wordingCan you see marks awarded and withheld at specific points?Ticks and a total, nothing named
Week 4Three ranked causes of mark loss, each labelledCan you repeat them back in one sentence?Only a general statement that progress is good
Week 6A timed paper with minutes recorded per questionIs time being spent where the marks are?A mark with no timing data
Week 9A second timed paper on comparable difficultyHas the cost of the three named errors fallen?A higher score on an easier paper, presented as progress
Week 12The error tally across all dated scriptsAre the original three errors cheaper than in week one?The same errors, same size, after twelve paid hours
03

Reading a marked script the way an examiner does

  • Blanks and unfinished final questions mean timing, not knowledge
  • Correct answers with no working are the cheapest marks in the paper to recover
  • Credible annotation quotes the scheme and names the mark that was missed
  • Report progress in marks and errors, not in predicted grades

Most parents look at the number in the corner. The number is the least informative thing on the page. What matters is the distribution: where in the paper the marks were lost, whether they were lost to not knowing or to not writing, and whether the last two questions are blank because time ran out or because they were skipped on sight.

Four quick checks need no subject knowledge. First, count blank spaces and incomplete final questions: that is a timing problem, not a knowledge problem. Second, look for correct answers with no working in subjects where method is credited: those are given-away marks and the cheapest to recover. Third, read the long-answer questions and see whether sentences connect to each other or merely sit next to each other. Fourth, check whether the same topic appears in the lost column across several papers.

Then look at the annotation itself, because its quality tells you about the tutor rather than the student. Credible marking quotes the scheme's own phrasing, says what would have earned the mark, and distinguishes between a mark not available and a mark available and missed. Weak marking is a tick, a cross and a score out of sixty. If what arrives is the second kind, you are paying for attendance, and that is as true of a visiting tutor in Dubai as of a video session.

One caution about marks and grades. Grade boundaries move between series, so a mark of 62 is not a fixed grade and no honest tutor will convert one for you with confidence. What a mark does tell you reliably is direction: 62 after 48 on comparable papers is real movement. Treat boundary conversions as estimates and insist that progress is reported in marks and errors rather than in predicted letters.

04

Grade movement: signal against noise

Progress claims in this market are mostly noise, and it is worth knowing how to tell. A higher score on an easier paper is not progress. A better mock after a mock season where the whole cohort improved is partly the cohort. A two-grade jump in three weeks is almost always a difficulty difference between papers, or a topic the student happened to have revised. None of that means tutoring is failing; it means the measurement was weak.

Real signal looks different and it is slower. The cost of a named error falls across dated scripts on comparable papers. Timing data improves: fewer minutes on low-mark questions, fewer blanks at the end. A student starts annotating the question before answering it. In essay subjects, paragraphs begin with a method rather than a plot event. Those are structural changes and they persist, which is exactly why they are worth more than a single flattering score.

The table separates the two. Use it when a provider reports progress, and use it on yourself when a mock result arrives and feels like either a triumph or a disaster. Dubai mock seasons generate a great deal of unnecessary panic in November, most of which is a difficulty effect, and a great deal of unwarranted relief in February for the same reason.

One timescale worth internalising, because it prevents most mid-term crises of faith: technique habits move in two or three sessions, structural writing changes in four to six weeks, and content gaps take a term, sometimes two if a year was genuinely lost. A plan judged on the wrong timescale gets abandoned a fortnight before it would have worked.

05

Drafts as evidence, without crossing the line

  • Keep planning notes, dated drafts and the feedback trail in one place
  • A real trail shows the student accepting some feedback and rejecting some
  • Feedback belongs in questions and criterion references, not in sentences to paste
  • Never buy, commission or accept text for an assessed piece, at any price

Internal assessment is worth about a fifth of most diploma subject grades and it is produced over weeks, which makes it the most evidence-rich part of the whole system and the part where the academic-honesty boundary matters most. The evidence you want is a trail of the student's own decisions: a planning note, an early draft, feedback given as questions and criterion references, and a later draft where the student has acted on some of it and ignored the rest.

That last detail is the tell. A genuine trail shows a student exercising judgement, including judgement a tutor disagreed with. A manufactured one shows each piece of feedback implemented perfectly, in a register that does not match the student's other writing. Schools notice the second kind, and the consequence of a malpractice finding lands on the student rather than on whoever supplied the text.

So the rules here are firm and they also happen to produce better evidence. A tutor reads the criteria with the student and explains what each letter rewards. A tutor models technique on different material, never on the student's own task. A tutor responds to a draft the student wrote in their own words. A tutor helps build a timeline against the school's internal deadlines. Nobody writes, restructures to completion or submits anything, and one provider in this search result sells completed internal assessments outright, which is the clearest available signal to go elsewhere.

For middle-years students the equivalent is the personal project journal, where the reflecting criterion carries eight marks and cannot be awarded from a thin record. Coaching a student to log as they go is legitimate, useful and entirely their own work, and it is the single cheapest set of marks on this page to protect.

06

What a weekly note should actually contain

  • Four sentences: worked on, got wrong and why, set next, errors moving or not
  • No grade predictions, no attitude adjectives without evidence
  • A note about what the tutor explained is not a note about what the student can do
  • Keep them dated and in one folder; the next tutor will need them

A session note is four sentences and takes two minutes to write, which is why its absence is informative. It should say what was worked on, what the student got wrong and why, what was set for next time, and whether the three named errors are moving. That is it. Anything longer is usually padding and anything shorter is usually a receipt.

What a note should not contain: adjectives about attitude without evidence, a grade prediction, a request for more hours in place of a diagnosis, or a summary of what the tutor explained rather than what the student produced. The last of those is the commonest and the most misleading, because a note describing excellent explanations of trigonometry tells you nothing about whether your child can now do trigonometry under a clock.

Over a term these notes do work that nothing else does. They let you answer the four-week and twelve-week tests honestly. They hand a replacement tutor a diagnosis on day one, which in a market where mid-year changes are routine is worth more than loyalty to any individual. And they let you walk into a Dubai consultation evening with dates, scripts and a sentence that names a specific loss, which is a different conversation from a worried parent describing a feeling.

Ask for the notes in writing, in a form you can keep, and read them. A provider who sends them and a parent who never opens them end up in the same place as a provider who sends nothing, and the four-week test cannot be run from memory.

07

Six questions that expose a tutor with no evidence

  • Which exact specification code and level have you taught, and for how many cohorts?
  • Can you show one anonymised marked script with the mark scheme beside it?
  • What will arrive in writing between sessions, and how often?
  • What will exist after four weeks that I can read?
  • How do you report progress: marks, errors, or predicted grades?
  • What happens if the match is wrong after two sessions?

Ask these before the first paid hour, to every provider you are considering, including us. They take a tutor thirty seconds each to answer if the answers exist, and they are unanswerable if they do not. That asymmetry is the whole value: you are not testing charm, you are testing whether a working method is in place.

Watch for the shape of the deflection rather than the content. Pointing at a testimonial instead of a script, offering a free consultation instead of answering, listing qualifications instead of describing the method, or quoting an unverifiable success statistic are all the same move. A statistic without a number of students, a date and a method behind it is not evidence, and in a market where competitors publish satisfaction percentages nobody can reproduce, treating those claims as noise is simply accurate.

The flip side is worth saying. A tutor who answers all six plainly, admits the limits of what they can promise, and offers one anonymised marked script is demonstrating the thing you are actually buying. We hold no regulator or examination-board accreditation, we do not describe tutors as examiners, and nobody here will predict a grade before teaching your child. What we will do is produce the week-four list and the twelve-week tally.

If you are hiring a visiting tutor locally instead, the same six questions apply unchanged, plus two more: ask for identification and for confirmation of the MoHRE private tuition work permit, which is issued free of charge for two years under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. Those two are about compliance rather than teaching, and they are reasonable to ask of anyone.

08

Using the file at a Dubai parents' evening

The evidence file has a second job that families rarely plan for: it changes what the school can do for you. Dubai Year 11 and Year 12 classes are large and teachers are triaging. A parent describing a worry is one of twenty-five such conversations in an evening. A parent arriving with four dated scripts and one specific sentence is giving a head of department something they can act on inside the school's own processes.

Three things it can open up. A tier or set review, where entries for Core or Extended, Foundation or Higher, close months before the exam and are moved on evidence rather than on confidence. A second look at a predicted grade, which is a professional judgement a teacher is entitled to revisit when new marked work exists. And clarity on a coursework or internal assessment deadline, where seeing the draft trail tells a teacher the student is working rather than drifting.

How to do it well: bring no more than four scripts, have the sentence ready, and ask a question rather than making a case. Our daughter is losing method marks on structured algebra; here are four papers; what would you want to see before reviewing her tier? That phrasing puts the school in charge of its own decision, which is both appropriate and far more effective than arriving with a demand or a tutor's opinion attached.

What not to do: never present a tutor's prediction as a forecast the school should adopt, never imply any provider can influence an entry, a boundary or an equivalency decision, and never let a tutoring arrangement become a reason to disengage from the school. The teacher who sets the work and knows the cohort remains the most important adult in this picture, and the file exists to inform them, not to argue with them.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

These notes cover the practical half of the near-me question: what the evening looks like in each cluster, and where the local tutor pool genuinely helps. All IB Gram sessions run over live video.

Jumeirah, Al Safa and Umm Suqeim

The deepest local pool in Dubai and the shortest drives, so proximity is cheapest to satisfy here. It is also where families most often accept a nearby generalist when the subject needed a specialist.

Arabian Ranches, Mudon and Serena

Villa communities where crossing to a tutor's area at 6pm is the whole problem. Over video the evening slot is the only variable, and evidence quality becomes the deciding factor instead.

Mirdif, Al Warqa and Al Qusais

Late bus arrivals push sessions to 6.30pm and later. Good centre provision locally, so ask any centre how many individually marked pieces your child will receive across a term.

Dubai Marina, JLT and JBR

Close to several school clusters, so a nearby tutor is easy to find and a specialist in a scarce code is not. The evidence questions below are what separate the two.

Dubai Hills Estate and Meydan

Growing Year 10 and 11 cohorts in newer schools, where tier and set decisions are still being settled and marked evidence carries real weight with heads of department.

Dubai South, Jebel Ali and Emaar South

Where near me returns the fewest useful results in the emirate. Families here get more from asking for marked scripts in their child's exact specification than from asking who is closest.

Business Bay, Downtown and DIFC

Late household schedules and apartment study spaces. The 8.30pm review of a marked paper is the most-used booking here, and it exists only because nobody is driving to it.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send a recent marked paper

A photograph of the last marked script or piece of work, with the specification code and level, is worth more than any description of the problem. It lets the tutor arrive at the free lesson already knowing where to look, and it is the first item in your evidence folder.

  2. 02

A free first lesson, no card details

One full lesson at no charge with no payment method taken. Judge it on one question: did your child's own work appear on the screen and did they spend most of the hour producing something. The note that follows should describe their work, not the tutor's plan.

  3. 03

    Week four: the ranked list

Three named causes of mark loss from your child's own work, in priority order, each labelled content, method or timing, with a realistic estimate of how long each takes to close. This is the deliverable to judge the arrangement on, and it is why the first month is worth paying for even if nothing follows it.

  4. 04

A marked cycle and a timed paper

An hour taught, about thirty minutes of marked work between sessions, and a full timed paper every two or three weeks with minutes recorded per question. That cadence is what fills the twelve-week ledger, and the ledger is what tells you whether to continue.

  5. 05

    Week twelve: closure, not activity

We review the error tally across every dated script and say plainly whether the three named errors are cheaper than they were. If they are not, we change the diagnosis or the tutor rather than adding hours, and we tell you which we think it is.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Evidence, in writing, by default

Annotated scripts keyed to mark-scheme wording, timing data per question, a four-sentence note after every session, and a ranked diagnosis by week four. All of it dated, all of it yours to keep and to show the school.

Progress reported in marks and errors

Grade boundaries move between series, so nobody here converts a mark into a confident grade or issues a prediction. What we report is the cost of named errors across comparable papers, which is the only measure that holds up.

Geography stops being a filter

Over video, the near-me question collapses to a question about the hour of the evening. That leaves specification match, marking quality and written output as the things you are choosing between, which is where the grade actually lives.

Honest about what evidence cannot do

A file does not change a boundary, an entry, a prediction or an equivalency decision, and no provider can. What it can do is give a head of department something concrete to act on inside the school's own processes.

Stated limits

Lessons run one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not provide home visits in the UAE; home visiting is a service we offer only in India. We hold no regulator or board accreditation, and we publish no success statistics we cannot evidence.

The work stays the student's own

On internal assessment and coursework, feedback comes as questions and criterion references on a draft they wrote. A trail showing their own judgement is both the only legitimate kind and the better evidence.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Does it genuinely matter whether a tutor lives near us in Dubai?+

It matters for exactly one thing: whether an in-home session reliably happens on a school night, given what the roads do between five and seven. It does not affect whether the tutor has taught your child's specification, whether they mark to the board's scheme, or whether anything useful arrives in writing between sessions. Those three decide the grade. For mainstream subjects a nearby tutor costs you nothing; for scarce codes and Higher Level sciences, insisting on proximity means selecting from a very short list, which is how families end up with a generalist.

What should I have in my hands after four weeks of tutoring?+

Three named causes of mark loss from your child's own work, ranked in priority order, each labelled content, method or timing, with a rough estimate of how long each takes to close. Plus at least one annotated script showing marks awarded and withheld at specific points, and a short note after each session. If what you have instead is a general sense that things are going well, the arrangement has not produced anything yet, and adding hours will not fix that.

How do I read the annotations on a marked script if I do not know the subject?+

Four checks need no subject knowledge. Count blanks and unfinished final questions, which indicate timing rather than knowledge. Look for correct answers with no working in subjects where method is credited, because those are the cheapest marks to recover. Read the long answers and see whether sentences connect or merely sit beside each other. Then check whether the same topic appears in the lost column across several papers. Finally, judge the marking itself: credible annotation quotes the scheme and names the mark that was missed.

My child jumped two grades in a mock. Should I believe it?+

Probably not as a sustainable change. Two grades in three weeks is usually a paper-difficulty effect or luck with topics, and the honest response is to re-test on a comparable paper before treating it as real. That is not cynicism: the same caution applies to a sudden drop, which causes a great deal of unnecessary panic in Dubai mock seasons. Durable progress looks slower and duller: the cost of a named error falling across dated scripts, fewer blanks at the end, better minutes per question.

How often should I receive a written update?+

After every session, and it should be four sentences: what was worked on, what the student got wrong and why, what was set for next time, and whether the three named errors are moving. Longer than that is usually padding. What a note should never contain is a grade prediction, adjectives about attitude with no evidence behind them, or a summary of what the tutor explained rather than what your child produced. That last one is the commonest and the most misleading.

Can a tutor give me a predicted grade for my child?+

No, and you should be wary of one who offers. Predicted grades are issued by the school as a professional judgement for university applications, and no tutor has the standing or the cohort data to produce one. What a tutor can legitimately do is report marks on comparable papers, the cost of named errors over time, and timing data, and note that grade boundaries move between series so a mark does not convert cleanly. If the school is reconsidering a prediction, that file is exactly what a teacher reviews.

What evidence does a Dubai school actually accept for a tier review?+

Marked work at the tier you are asking for, dated, and ideally four pieces rather than one. A head of department deciding between Foundation and Higher, or Core and Extended, is weighing whether a student can access the harder paper without collapsing, and the only persuasive answer is scripts from the harder paper. Bring no more than four, have one specific sentence ready, and ask what else they would want to see rather than making a case. Entries close months before the exam, so raise it in the autumn term.

How do I know the improvement is not just easier papers?+

Insist on comparability and on error tracking. Two papers from the same board, same tier and similar vintage give a usable comparison; a mark from an unspecified source does not. More reliably, track the cost of the three named errors across every dated script: if marks lost to missing working fell from eleven to four across four papers, that is real regardless of paper difficulty. Score alone is the weakest measure available, which is why progress should be reported in errors and marks rather than in a single number.

What does progress look like week by week in an essay subject?+

Structural rather than numerical, and visible to a parent who has not read the text. Count the paragraphs that begin with a method or technique rather than with a plot event. Watch for short embedded quotations replacing long retold extracts. Look for the register matching the audience the task names. Those changes take four to six weeks and they persist, whereas an essay mark out of thirty bounces around with the question. Keep two essays six weeks apart and compare them side by side; the difference is usually obvious.

Should I ask a tutor for their previous students' results?+

Ask for one anonymised marked script with the mark scheme beside it instead. Results claims are unverifiable, and a provider quoting a satisfaction percentage or an average improvement without the number of students, the date and the method behind it is quoting noise. A marked script shows you how they mark, which is the thing you are actually buying. Competitors in this market publish review counts and ratings that contradict each other on the same page, which is a reasonable argument for ignoring that entire category of claim.

How can I be sure a coursework draft is my child's own work?+

Look at the trail rather than the final text. A genuine one shows planning notes, an early draft, feedback given as questions and criterion references, and a later draft where your child acted on some of it and ignored some. That pattern of judgement, including judgement the tutor disagreed with, is what an honest process looks like. A draft where every suggestion is implemented perfectly in a register unlike your child's other writing is the pattern schools notice, and the malpractice consequence falls on the student.

What are the warning signs in a tutor's progress report?+

A percentage with no annotation. A recommendation for more hours offered in place of a sharper diagnosis. A description of what the tutor explained rather than what the student produced. A grade prediction. Attitude adjectives with nothing behind them. And any statistic about past students without a number, a date and a method attached. Each of those is a substitute for evidence, and the substitution is usually unconscious rather than dishonest, which does not make it less expensive over a term.

How many marked papers before a pattern is trustworthy?+

Three to four scripts across a few weeks is usually enough to see clustering, and one is almost never enough. What you are looking for is repetition: the same topic in the lost column, the same marks given away for missing working, the same time overspend on low-value questions. A single bad paper can be illness, a hard question or a bad morning. Four papers showing the same three errors is a diagnosis, and that is the point at which spending money on fixing them is a sound decision.

If we want someone physically nearby, can you arrange that?+

No. IB Gram does not provide home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visiting is a service we offer only in India, and tutoring for families here runs one to one over live video. If what your child needs is an adult in the room, the useful part of this page for you is the six-question list and the two compliance checks: identification and the MoHRE private tuition work permit, issued free of charge for two years under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. Those questions work on any tutor, in any format.

How do we hand over to a new tutor without losing the diagnosis?+

By keeping the file. Dated annotated scripts, the session notes and the ranked list of named errors hand a replacement tutor a working diagnosis on day one instead of costing you a fortnight of rediscovery. In a market where mid-year changes are routine, that folder is worth more than loyalty to any individual, and it is also the reason a tutor change in February need not be a disaster. Ask for everything in a form you can keep rather than inside a platform you might lose access to.

Ask for the evidence before you ask for the postcode

Reorder the questions and this search gets easier. Specification and level first. Then evidence: one anonymised marked script, and what will exist in writing after four weeks. Then the hour of the evening that genuinely works in your household. Geography comes last, and over video it does not come up at all. Send a photograph of a recent marked paper with the code and the level, and we will propose a tutor who teaches that paper. The first lesson is free and takes no card details, and by week four you will have three named causes of mark loss in writing or a clear reason to change.
