IB IGCSE Tutor for Jebel Ali School Students in Dubai

Most families looking for an IB IGCSE tutor for Jebel Ali School students in Dubai are looking at a mathematics grade that has stopped moving. Maths is the subject where understanding and marks come apart most visibly: a pupil who can do the algebra still drops method marks, units and precision across a paper. This page maps Cambridge 0580 paper by paper and names the five ways a mark disappears. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time.

  • Worked from the Cambridge 0580 or Pearson 4MA1 code on the exam entry
  • Marks sorted by error type before any teaching is bought
  • One-to-one live video delivery; no visits to UAE addresses
  • Free trial lesson, one session, no card details required

Maths marks disappear in five specific ways

A mathematics grade is the most diagnosable thing on an IGCSE report, and it is almost never diagnosed. Parents are told their child is working at a grade 5 and should aim for a 6, which is a position rather than an explanation. The useful information sits in the script: which questions were attempted, which were abandoned, whether the working was shown, whether the right method was used with the wrong arithmetic, and whether the final answer was rounded into a lost mark.

Those distinctions are not pedantry. They cost completely different amounts to fix. A pupil losing marks because the method was never learned needs teaching, which takes a term. A pupil losing marks because the method is right and the working is not written down needs a habit changed, which takes four sessions. A pupil who ran out of time on the last page needs timed practice, which takes five. On a report these three pupils all look identical, and families routinely buy a term of teaching for a problem that was a habit.

Mathematics also behaves differently from every other IGCSE subject in one important respect: it is cumulative in a way biology is not. A pupil who never secured negative indices does not merely lose the indices marks; they lose the standard-form marks, the algebraic fraction marks, and the parts of physics and chemistry that assume both. That is why a maths gap found in Year 9 is cheap and the same gap found in the spring term of Year 11 is expensive. It has had two years to spread.

Then there is the calculator question, which is more consequential than it looks. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 sets papers at each tier with different calculator permissions, and the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A route handles this differently again. A pupil who has revised exclusively with a calculator to hand has not practised the paper they will sit, and the marks lost are concentrated in exactly the places a confident pupil assumes they are safe: fractions, surds, standard form and multi-step arithmetic under pressure.

So this page is a map rather than a pitch. It sets out what each 0580 paper asks for, which topics carry the most marks at Extended tier, the five error types and what each one costs to repair, how the Cambridge route compares with Pearson's, and where an IGCSE maths grade leads next - into AS and A Level mathematics, or into the IB Diploma's two distinct maths routes, Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation. Tuition for Dubai families is one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time; IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai, and home visits are a service offered only in India.

Key Stage 3 mathematics

Where the foundations that IGCSE later assesses are either secured or not. Negative numbers, indices, fractions, rearranging and proportional reasoning are all taught here, and a pupil who leaves Year 9 insecure in any of them carries that insecurity into every Extended-tier paper two years later. Ten hours of work here replaces forty in Year 11.

Dubai schools set mathematics from Year 7 or 8 in most cases, and the set a pupil sits in at the end of Year 9 frequently determines the tier they are entered for in Year 11. A set allocation made on one term's evidence can therefore become a grade ceiling, which makes a Year 9 diagnostic unusually good value.

Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1

Two years to a terminal series, with no coursework in either route. Cambridge offers Core and Extended tiers; Pearson Edexcel Mathematics A runs Foundation and Higher. Both examine across the whole syllabus in two written papers, so there is nowhere to hide a weak topic and no component that can be dropped.

UAE candidates sit June and November. For a Dubai Year 11 the June series is the main entry and November is a workable resit route for maths specifically, because a single-subject retake is a contained plan. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, and the school knows which timetable applies.

IB Diploma mathematics and International A Level

Two divergent destinations with different IGCSE prerequisites. A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics assume fluent algebra from the Extended tier. The IB Diploma splits mathematics into Analysis and Approaches, which is algebraic and proof-oriented, and Applications and Interpretation, which is modelling and data-oriented, each at Higher and Standard Level.

Dubai sixth forms publish IGCSE maths entry grades, and selective schools apply them. A pupil aiming at engineering or economics at a competitive university usually needs Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level or A Level Mathematics, and both routes assume an Extended-tier IGCSE grade well above the minimum.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Mathematics first, with the subjects whose marks depend on it next. Each entry names the specification code and the specific place marks tend to go.

Mathematics (Cambridge IGCSE 0580)

Core and Extended

Two written papers per tier, no coursework, syllabus examined in full. Extended tier reaches the top grades; Core caps the scale. Most lost marks at Extended tier are method and precision rather than content, which makes the diagnostic worth more than the teaching.

Mathematics A (Pearson Edexcel 4MA1)

Foundation and Higher

Two papers of equal weight on the Higher route, with calculator permissions that differ from the Cambridge arrangement. A pupil changing school mid-course needs a short reconciliation of the two specifications rather than a term of general support.

Additional Mathematics (Cambridge 0606)

IGCSE

Taken by pupils heading for A Level Mathematics or IB Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level. Introduces calculus and more demanding trigonometry, and is the single best bridge between Extended-tier IGCSE and sixth-form mathematics.

Physics (Cambridge IGCSE 0625)

Core and Extended

The subject that most visibly inherits a maths gap. Rearranging equations, substituting in non-standard units and giving sensible precision are maths skills examined inside a physics paper, and they leak marks accordingly.

Chemistry (Cambridge IGCSE 0620)

Core and Extended

Mole calculations, concentration, yield and electrolysis quantities all depend on proportional reasoning. A pupil weak on ratio in maths will be weak on moles in chemistry, and repairing the maths repairs both.

Biology (Cambridge IGCSE 0610)

Core and Extended

Lower maths dependency, higher terminology demand. Marks go to imprecise language and command-term mismatches rather than to calculation, so it is the cheapest of the three sciences to improve.

Computer Science (Cambridge IGCSE 0478)

IGCSE

Binary, hexadecimal and logic are straightforward arithmetic in disguise. The paper's real difficulty is algorithm tracing and writing Cambridge pseudocode conventions rather than working code.

Economics and Business Studies

IGCSE

Data-response questions reward reading a graph accurately and calculating a percentage change correctly before any economics is applied. Pupils who are strong on content and weak on arithmetic lose marks here consistently.

Geography (Cambridge IGCSE 0460)

IGCSE

The skills paper tests map reading, scale, graph interpretation and simple statistics. It is the most trainable component in the subject and the most commonly neglected in revision.

Arabic as an Additional Language

IGCSE and school-stream

Runs alongside the Arabic provision every Dubai private school must deliver under KHDA's mandatory-subject requirements, whatever the licensed curriculum. Script accuracy and reading fluency are the measurable targets.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to work on mathematics, matched to what a marked script says rather than to how worried the household is. The first is short, cheap and skipped by most families.

An error-type diagnostic, two sessions

The pupil sits a full past paper at the tier they are entered for, under timing, and every lost mark is sorted into content, method, arithmetic, precision or timing. The output is a count, not an impression: so many marks here, so many there. That count determines what is worth buying and for how long.

  • A complete paper under examination timing, not a worksheet
  • Marked against the real Cambridge or Pearson mark scheme
  • Lost marks counted by error type and listed by question
  • A recommendation with a stated number of sessions and an end point

Weekly one-to-one on one error type

One hour a week aimed at the single error type that costs the most marks, rather than at the subject in general. A pupil losing nine marks to unshown method does not need re-teaching; they need somebody insisting on written working until it becomes automatic, which is a habit intervention with a visible end.

  • Session built round the pupil's own last marked attempt
  • One piece of timed work marked between sessions
  • Progress measured as marks recovered by error type, not as a feeling
  • Pause without penalty during holidays and study leave

Non-calculator paper practice, concentrated

A short block on the paper most pupils have under-practised, because revision at home almost always happens with a calculator within reach. Fractions, surds, standard form and multi-step arithmetic under timing are the targets, and progress here is unusually fast because the content is already known.

  • Six to eight sessions on a single paper type
  • Full papers under timing, marked and the errors re-worked
  • Scheduled round the school's mock and study-leave calendar
  • Moved to post-Iftar slots when revision falls inside Ramadan

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What the Cambridge 0580 papers actually ask for

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 is examined by two written papers at each tier, with no coursework component. A Core candidate sits the Core pair; an Extended candidate sits the Extended pair. The syllabus is examined across both papers, which means there is no topic a pupil can decide not to revise and no component that can be dropped to protect a weak area.

The tier is a grade ceiling rather than a difficulty setting. A Core entry gives access to the lower part of the grade scale and cannot reach the top grades, however well the papers are answered on the day. An Extended entry opens the whole scale and includes questions that assume content a Core candidate never meets. Because the entry is made by the centre months before the paper, the ceiling is effectively set in the autumn term of Year 11 at the latest.

Calculator permissions differ between the papers, and this is the detail that most reliably surprises families. Confirm the current arrangement for your child's series on the live Cambridge syllabus, because specifications are revised and no tutoring page is the authority on an exam entry. What matters practically is that one of the papers will test arithmetic the pupil cannot delegate to a machine, and that revision done entirely with a calculator to hand does not prepare for it.

The consequence for tutoring is a specific one. Ask which papers your child is entered for, obtain a past paper of each from the official Cambridge site, and have the pupil sit one under timing. That single hour tells you more about where the grade is than a term of lessons will, and it costs a fraction of what the term costs. The table sets out the shape of the two routes side by side.

The calculator question, and why it costs more marks than it should

Almost every pupil revises mathematics with a calculator within arm's reach, because that is how homework is done. The result is a systematic blind spot. Arithmetic that a pupil genuinely could do becomes arithmetic they have not done for eighteen months, and it reappears under timed conditions in a paper where the machine is unavailable. The marks lost are not conceptual and they are not small.

The specific casualties are predictable. Fraction arithmetic with unlike denominators. Surd manipulation and rationalising. Standard form multiplication and division. Percentage reverse problems. Long multiplication and division inside a multi-step question where the pupil is concentrating on the method and the arithmetic quietly fails. Each of these is a few marks, and a paper contains enough of them to move a grade on their own.

There is a second, subtler cost. A pupil who cannot do the arithmetic quickly spends time on it, and time spent on arithmetic is time not spent on the last page of the paper. So a non-calculator weakness presents as a timing problem, and families buy timed practice for what is actually an arithmetic fluency problem. The diagnostic distinguishes them easily: look at whether the abandoned questions were hard or simply late.

The good news is that this is the fastest-moving work in mathematics. The content is already known, so nothing has to be taught, only re-fluent. Six to eight sessions of deliberate non-calculator practice, with the errors re-worked rather than merely corrected, typically recovers marks faster than any other intervention available at Extended tier. The table lists the skills worth drilling and where each one shows up.

The five ways a maths mark disappears

There are only five, and sorting a script into them is the whole of maths diagnosis. Content: the pupil did not know the method, so the question was wrong or blank from the start. Method: the right approach was used but not written down, so the mark scheme could not award the working marks. Arithmetic: the method was right and a number went wrong. Precision: the value was right and the rounding, the units or the exact form was not. Timing: the question was never reached.

Each one has a different price. Content gaps need teaching, which is the expensive option and takes a term for a substantial topic. Method gaps need insisting on, which takes four or five sessions and never recurs once the habit forms. Arithmetic gaps need fluency practice. Precision gaps need a checklist and a few weeks of nagging. Timing gaps need full papers under the clock. A family that knows which one it has is buying a repair; a family that does not is buying reassurance.

The sorting is also the only honest basis for a conversation about what tutoring can and cannot do. A script with sixteen marks lost to method, arithmetic and precision is a script where a grade is genuinely available in a handful of weeks. A script where thirty marks are lost to content across half the syllabus is a different situation, and no amount of weekly tutoring in the final term resolves it. A provider who takes that money without saying so is selling comfort.

Counting is easy and almost nobody does it. Ask the school for the last marked mock paper, go through it question by question, and put each lost mark in one of five columns. The pattern is usually visible within twenty minutes, it is free, and it changes what you should buy. The table gives the recognition signs and the realistic cost of each repair.

FIVE ERROR TYPES, AND WHAT EACH COSTS TO REPAIR

TimingFinal questions blank though similar ones were answered earlierFull papers under the clock, with pacing discussed4-5
04

Which topics carry the most Extended-tier marks

  • Algebra is embedded in other topics, so fluency pays several times over
  • Exact-form answers in trigonometry are a recurring and avoidable loss
  • Probability errors are usually reading errors, not technique errors
  • A pupil moving a 4 to a 6 should not be revising functions and vectors first

Not every topic is worth the same. Algebra runs through the whole Extended paper, appearing inside geometry, trigonometry, probability and functions questions, so algebraic fluency pays repeatedly rather than once. A pupil who cannot rearrange confidently loses marks in places that are not labelled algebra at all, which is why algebra repair is the highest-leverage purchase in the subject.

Trigonometry and Pythagoras are the next most profitable, partly because they recur and partly because pupils routinely lose the exact-form marks. Probability and statistics reward careful reading more than technique, and the commonest loss there is answering a different question from the one asked. Transformations and vectors are self-contained, which makes them cheap to repair and easy to abandon in revision because they feel unfamiliar.

Functions, sequences and graph work sit at the top end of the Extended paper and are where the difference between a good grade and a top grade is usually decided. A pupil aiming for the highest grades needs these secure; a pupil trying to lift a 4 to a 6 should probably leave them alone and spend the time on algebra and arithmetic, because that is where their missing marks actually are.

This is the argument against revising a syllabus in order. Revision that starts at chapter one and runs out of term in the middle is revision that spent its best weeks on number work the pupil already had. Revision built from a marked script starts where the marks are, and for most Extended-tier candidates in Dubai that means algebra, non-calculator arithmetic and written method, in that order, before anything else is considered.

05

Cambridge 0580 against Pearson Edexcel 4MA1

Dubai families move schools, and schools do not all use the same board. A pupil who has spent a year on Cambridge 0580 and transfers into a school entering Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A has not lost their mathematics, but they have changed examination. Paper structures, calculator permissions and question styles all differ, and revision built on the wrong board's past papers is partly misdirected effort.

The naming differs too, which causes avoidable confusion. Cambridge runs Core and Extended tiers; Pearson Mathematics A runs Foundation and Higher. They are not synonyms, the content boundaries are not identical, and a parent comparing two schools' maths provision needs the board and tier together to make any sense of it. Ask the examinations officer for the specification code on the entry, because a prospectus that says 'IGCSE Mathematics' has told you almost nothing.

The practical remedy for a transfer is short and specific rather than open-ended. Confirm the code. Download the specification and past papers from the official board site, never from a third party. Work through the differences topic by topic, noting what is additional, what is absent and what is examined differently. Three or four sessions usually covers it, and it prevents a whole term of revision aimed at the wrong paper.

Both boards offer a November route, which matters for maths more than for most subjects. A single-subject mathematics retake is a contained plan rather than a crisis: the content is already covered, the diagnosis already exists, and the work is technique under timing. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November, with the November 2026 timetable having run from late October to 19 November 2026 and results reaching students in January.

Where an IGCSE maths grade leads next

An IGCSE mathematics grade is a gate, and families often meet the gate after it has closed. Sixth-form mathematics departments publish entry grades and apply them, and the two post-16 destinations available in Dubai make different demands. A Level Mathematics assumes fluent Extended-tier algebra from the first week. The IB Diploma splits mathematics into two courses that are genuinely different subjects rather than two difficulty levels.

Analysis and Approaches is the algebraic, proof-oriented route, available at Higher and Standard Level, and it is the one competitive engineering, physics, mathematics and economics courses generally expect. Applications and Interpretation is modelling and data-oriented, also at both levels, and is well suited to pupils heading for business, social sciences, design or medicine-adjacent routes where statistics matter more than proof. Choosing between them on the basis of which looks easier is the commonest mistake.

The bridge between Extended-tier IGCSE and either destination is algebraic fluency, and Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606 exists precisely to build it. A pupil who takes it alongside 0580 arrives in Year 12 having already met calculus and harder trigonometry, and the first term of A Level or Higher Level work stops being a cliff. Where a school does not offer it, a short block of pre-sixth-form algebra in the summer does much of the same job.

The practical instruction for a Year 10 parent is to look up the thresholds now rather than later. Find out what grade the sixth forms you are considering require in mathematics for the course your child wants, and compare it with where the marked script says they are. That converts an anxiety into a number, a gap and a number of sessions, which is the only form in which the problem can be solved.

When maths practice actually happens in a Dubai school year

Mathematics rewards frequency more than duration, which puts it at odds with how families buy tutoring. Three twenty-minute sessions of non-calculator arithmetic in a week does more for fluency than one ninety-minute lesson, because fluency is built by repetition and not by explanation. The weekly hour is for diagnosis, marking and teaching; the fluency work is homework, and a tutoring arrangement that does not set it is only doing half the job.

The Dubai calendar then imposes its own shape. The heaviest useful revision window for a June series sits in the eight to twelve weeks beforehand, which falls in the spring term. In some years that window overlaps Ramadan, when school days shorten and evenings restructure around Iftar. A family that moves sessions to a post-Iftar slot keeps the most valuable quarter of the two-year course intact. A family that pauses loses six weeks it cannot recover.

The long summer is the other underused asset. A pupil going into Year 11 with a known content gap is far better served by four sessions in August, when the topic can still be taught properly, than by twelve in February, when there is only time to revise what is already there. Diagnosing in June and working in August is the cheapest version of this entire plan, and it is also the version nobody books.

Mock season is the third fixed point, and it is worth planning round rather than merely surviving. A mock paper is a free diagnostic the school has already administered, and it is the single most valuable document in the process. Ask for the script rather than the grade, and ask for it soon enough that the information can still be acted on, which in practice means the autumn term rather than the spring.

What a maths tutor may not do, and how to test one

  • Marking the pupil's own attempts: the core of legitimate maths tutoring
  • Supplying solutions for submission: never, at any price
  • Handing over past-paper or mark-scheme files: no; the official board page is linked
  • Three questions that test a maths tutor: code and calculator rules, error-type split, stated end point

The honesty line in mathematics is narrower than in essay subjects but it exists. A tutor teaches, questions, models a method and marks the pupil's own attempts. A tutor does not complete a piece of assessed work for a pupil, and does not hand over Cambridge or Pearson past papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables or syllabus documents as files. Those belong to the boards, and the right behaviour is to link the official page.

One page ranking in this market sells completed Internal Assessments at a published price. That is a malpractice trigger rather than a service, and the risk sits with the candidate whose certificate is at stake. It is also a useful sorting device for parents: ask a prospective tutor plainly what they would do if asked to write a paragraph or supply a solution for submission. The answer is more informative than anything on a profile.

Testing mathematical competence is easier than parents expect, and does not require any mathematics from the parent. Ask three questions. Which specification code and tier is my child entered for, and what are the calculator permissions on each paper? Having read this marked script, how many marks were lost to method as against arithmetic? And what is the end point of the work you are proposing, stated as a number of sessions and a target? A tutor who cannot answer all three concretely is not worth a specialist rate.

On claims: IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoE, MoHRE, Cambridge, Pearson or IB approval, accreditation, licensing or partnership, and makes no such claim. It has no office or centre in the UAE. Anyone advertising regulator-approved tutors in Dubai is describing a KHDA Educational Services Permit, which is issued to training institutes with premises, and no online matching platform holds one.

09

Coverage, permits and getting started

Mathematics at both Cambridge and Pearson tiers is the best-covered subject in this set, and a match is usually quick. Additional Mathematics 0606 is thinner, and so is the combination of Extended-tier maths with a specific sixth-form bridging brief. In a given week the honest answer may be that nobody suitable is free, and that is better said than papered over with a generalist who will cost the same and deliver less.

Three outcomes are possible. The subject is covered and a trial lesson is scheduled within days. The subject is covered by a specialist working into Gulf Standard Time from outside the UAE, which is disclosed rather than hidden behind a local-looking telephone number. Or the brief is not currently covered, in which case saying so is the only decent answer. Rates do not change because a tutor is based outside the UAE.

On the legal position, which parents are entitled to check: private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is issued through MoHRE, and is granted free of charge for two years. MoHRE's service page, Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no schedule of amounts has been published, so any figure circulating online is unverified.

Starting is deliberately low-commitment. A free trial lesson is one session, with no card details required, and the useful thing to bring to it is your child's last marked mathematics paper rather than a list of worries. Within that hour it should be possible to say how many marks were lost to each of the five error types and what the first four weeks of work would be. If it is not, the match is wrong and the next step is a different tutor.

Where we tutor

Where the families reading this page commute from

A school on the Dubailand side of Dubai draws from villa communities spread across a wide arc. The only logistical fact that matters to a tutoring plan is when a pupil is actually home and able to do maths, so these notes cover that.

Damac Hills and Akoya

Closest to the school and still a slow run at four in the afternoon on the Umm Suqeim Road approach. A 5pm online start works here; a travelling tutor would be committing ninety minutes to deliver sixty.

Arabian Ranches and Ranches 2

Villa communities with large household sizes, so a maths slot competes with siblings' schedules. A fixed weekly time that nobody renegotiates each week is what keeps a non-calculator practice habit alive.

Mudon and Remraam

Off the main arterials, where satnav estimates and real journeys diverge. Pupils are home by about 4.30pm, which makes an early-evening session the most productive slot for timed paper work.

Town Square and Serena

Newer, denser and generally on a tighter education budget than the established villa districts, which is where the AED 45-150 budget online band gets most enquiries. At Extended tier the gap between a budget tutor and a specialist shows in the method marks.

Jumeirah Golf Estates and Sports City

Well served by tuition centres, so group maths classes at roughly AED 100-150 per pupil are easy to find here. Group work covers content; it does not diagnose one child's specific arithmetic leak.

Jumeirah Village Circle and Triangle

Apartment-heavy and close enough that pupils are home early. Weekday 4.45pm starts are realistic, which suits a pupil who stops absorbing maths after about seven in the evening.

Dubai Investments Park and Green Community

A short run to the Dubailand corridor and a long one to central Dubai. Weekend morning sessions are popular here for full timed papers, which need a quiet ninety minutes rather than a squeezed hour.

Ask the examinations officer which specification your child is entered for, at which tier, and what the calculator permissions are on each paper. Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 are different examinations, and Core and Extended are different papers. Practice aimed at the wrong one is polite, expensive and useless.

  2. 02

Sit one full paper under timing

Not a worksheet and not a topic test. A complete past paper from the official board site, under examination conditions, marked against the real mark scheme. One hour of this produces more usable information than a term of lessons, and it costs nothing but the hour.

  3. 03

Count the lost marks by error type

Sort every lost mark into content, method, arithmetic, precision or timing. The pattern is usually clear within twenty minutes. A script dominated by method and arithmetic losses means a grade is genuinely available in weeks; a script dominated by content losses across the syllabus means a different conversation.

  4. 04

Buy the narrowest fix the script justifies

Aim the work at the largest column rather than at the subject in general. Four or five sessions on written method, or six to eight on non-calculator fluency, with a stated target and an end point. An arrangement with no end point has stopped being a repair and become a standing order.

  5. 05

Set fluency homework and keep the slot

Mathematics rewards frequency over duration, so short daily arithmetic between sessions does more than a longer lesson. Fix a weekly time fifteen minutes after your child is actually home - later for Mudon and Arabian Ranches than for JVT - and hold it through mock season rather than renegotiating it each week.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Diagnosis before teaching

The first thing produced is a count of lost marks by error type, taken from your child's own timed script. That count decides what is bought and for how long. A page that only talks about mathematics being difficult cannot tell you whether you need four sessions or a term.

The non-calculator paper taken seriously

Almost every pupil revises with a calculator to hand and then sits a paper without one. Fractions, surds, standard form and multi-step arithmetic are the predictable casualties, and because the content is already known this is the fastest-moving work available at Extended tier.

Codes and tiers, not subject names

Work starts from the specification code and tier on the exam entry: 0580 or 4MA1, Core or Extended, Foundation or Higher. These are different examinations with different calculator rules, and a prospectus that says only 'IGCSE Mathematics' has not told you which one your child is sitting.

An end point, stated in advance

Every recommendation carries a number of sessions and a target drawn from the script. Where the honest recommendation is to stop, or to talk to the school about tier first, that is said. An open-ended weekly arrangement with no stated finish is a subscription rather than a repair.

Delivery and coverage stated plainly

Lessons are one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are an India-only service. Where a brief such as Additional Mathematics 0606 has no specialist free, that is disclosed rather than filled with a generalist.

No claim that cannot be evidenced

No grade promises, no satisfaction percentages, no self-asserted ratings, and no suggestion that KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoE, Cambridge, Pearson or the IB has approved or partnered with IB Gram. Board documents are linked at source rather than copied and handed over.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What do the Cambridge 0580 papers ask a Jebel Ali School pupil to do?+

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 is examined by two written papers at each tier, with no coursework, and the syllabus is examined across both. A Core candidate sits the Core pair and cannot reach the top grades; an Extended candidate sits the Extended pair and has the full scale available. Calculator permissions differ between the papers, so confirm the current arrangement on the live Cambridge syllabus for your child's series. The practical consequence is that there is no weak topic a pupil can decide to skip and no component that can be banked before the series.

Is Extended-tier Maths 0580 worth attempting for a pupil currently at grade 5?+

It depends on what the lost marks are made of, not on the grade itself. A pupil at grade 5 whose script shows marks going to unshown method, non-calculator arithmetic and rounding has considerable headroom, because none of that requires new content. A pupil at grade 5 who cannot start the extended-content questions at all is in a different position, and Core entry may well produce a better certificate than a weak Extended attempt. The decision needs a timed Extended paper marked properly, and it needs to happen before the centre's entry deadline.

Which is harder for most pupils, the non-calculator paper or the calculator one?+

The non-calculator paper, almost invariably, and not because the mathematics is harder. Pupils revise with a calculator within reach because that is how homework is done, so arithmetic they genuinely could do has not been done for a year or more. Fractions with unlike denominators, surds, standard form and reverse percentages are the usual casualties, plus long arithmetic buried inside a method question. The marks lost are real and the repair is fast, because nothing needs teaching - only re-fluency, which is six to eight sessions of deliberate practice.

How do we find out whether marks are being lost to method or to arithmetic?+

Read the script rather than the report. Go through the last marked paper question by question and put each lost mark into one of five columns: content, method, arithmetic, precision or timing. A right answer with no working and unawarded working marks is a method loss. Method marks earned with the accuracy mark gone is an arithmetic loss. A correct value with the wrong rounding or units is precision. Blank final questions where similar earlier ones were answered is timing. The pattern is usually obvious within twenty minutes and it costs nothing.

What is the difference between Cambridge 0580 and Pearson Edexcel 4MA1?+

They are different examinations with different tier names, structures and calculator rules. Cambridge 0580 runs Core and Extended; Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A 4MA1 runs Foundation and Higher, and the two sets of names are not synonyms. For a pupil transferring between Dubai schools mid-course, the sensible response is a short reconciliation of three or four sessions: confirm the code on the entry, obtain the right past papers from the official board site, and work through what is additional, absent or examined differently. Both boards offer a November series for a single-subject retake.

How many sessions does it take to stop losing method marks?+

Usually four or five, because it is a habit rather than a knowledge problem. A pupil who gets the right answer without writing the working is not confused; they are rushing, and the mark scheme cannot reward reasoning it cannot see. The fix is mechanical insistence: every question written out in full, every session, with the unshown steps pointed at until writing them becomes automatic. It is unglamorous work and it is some of the cheapest grade movement available, because nothing new has to be taught at any point.

Does my child need to memorise formulae for IGCSE mathematics?+

Some are provided and some are not, and the split differs between boards and can be revised, so check the live syllabus or specification for your child's series rather than relying on what an older sibling remembers. What matters more than the list is fluency: a pupil who has to stop and recall a formula has lost the thread of a multi-step question, and a pupil who can rearrange it confidently once recalled loses nothing. The practical test is whether the formula can be used under timing, not whether it can be recited.

Which Extended-tier topics carry the most marks worth chasing?+

Algebra, by a wide margin, because it is embedded inside geometry, trigonometry, probability and function questions rather than confined to its own section. A pupil who cannot rearrange confidently loses marks in places the paper does not label as algebra. Trigonometry and Pythagoras come next, largely through lost exact-form answers. Functions, sequences and vectors sit at the top end and decide the difference between a good grade and a top one, which is why a pupil moving a 4 to a 6 should generally leave them until algebra and arithmetic are secure.

How does an IGCSE maths grade feed into IB Maths AA and AI?+

The IB Diploma splits mathematics into two genuinely different courses, each at Higher and Standard Level. Analysis and Approaches is algebraic and proof-oriented, and competitive engineering, physics, mathematics and economics courses generally expect it. Applications and Interpretation is modelling and data-oriented, and suits business, social sciences and design routes where statistics matter more than proof. Both assume Extended-tier fluency, and Higher Level Analysis and Approaches assumes a good deal of it. Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606, where a school offers it, is the best available bridge.

My child's maths set changed in Year 10. Does that affect the tier entry?+

Often, yes, because set placement is the main evidence a department uses when proposing a tier. A set change made on one term's assessments can quietly become a grade ceiling eighteen months later, and the change itself may reflect a short-term dip rather than a settled level. The response is to produce a second instrument: a timed Extended-tier paper marked against the real mark scheme, which is a different measurement from classroom assessment. Ask the department what evidence it wants and when its internal entry deadline falls, then meet it.

Can mathematics practice continue through Ramadan?+

Yes, and for a June-series candidate it should. The heaviest useful revision window sits eight to twelve weeks before the paper, which lands in the spring term and in some years overlaps Ramadan. School days shorten and evenings restructure around Iftar, so sessions move to a post-Iftar slot rather than disappearing. A family that reschedules keeps the most valuable quarter of the two-year course intact; a family that pauses loses six weeks at the point when timed practice and marked rewriting are the only interventions still capable of moving a grade.

Is a maths tutor still useful in the last three weeks before the June paper?+

For some things, yes, and for others no. Timed paper practice with marking and immediate re-working remains productive right up to study leave, and so does a precision checklist applied to every final answer. What does not work in three weeks is teaching a topic the pupil has never understood, and a provider willing to take the money for that is selling comfort. The honest version is narrow: pick the two highest-yield error types from the script, work only on those, and leave the rest alone.

Do you send maths tutors to Damac Hills or Arabian Ranches addresses?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; sending a tutor to a family's address is a service offered only in India. Tutoring for Dubai families is one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. For mathematics that works particularly well, because the session is spent annotating the pupil's own marked script on a shared screen and re-working the questions they lost marks on. It also means the tutor is chosen for the specification and tier rather than for living within a drivable radius of your community.

How do we check that a maths tutor actually knows the 0580 specification?+

Ask three questions and listen for specifics. Which code and tier is my child entered for, and what are the calculator permissions on each paper? Having read this marked script, how many marks went to method as against arithmetic? And what is the end point of the work you propose, as a number of sessions and a target? A tutor who answers all three concretely has read the specification and the script. A tutor who answers in general terms about building confidence has read neither, and will charge the same rate.

Bring one marked paper, not a list of worries

The most useful thing you can do this week costs nothing. Ask the school for your child's last marked mathematics paper, then sort every lost mark into content, method, arithmetic, precision or timing. The pattern usually appears within twenty minutes, and it tells you whether you are looking at four sessions or a term. A free trial lesson is one session, with no card details required, and the right thing to bring to it is that script. Lessons are one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, and where a brief such as Additional Mathematics 0606 has no specialist free, that will be said rather than filled.
