IB DP Design Technology Tutor in Dubai

The price of an IB DP Design Technology tutor in Dubai is only part of what this subject costs a family. Alongside the teaching sits a making budget nobody quotes for: materials, prototype iterations, printing, and the fabrication access a school may or may not provide. This page puts both in front of you in AED using other providers' published figures, shows where a Dubai student can actually get something made, and costs support by project stage. Lessons run live online in Gulf Standard Time, first one free.

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The making budget is the part of Design Technology nobody quotes for

Design Technology is the Diploma subject where a family can price the tutoring accurately and still be caught out. Teaching cost behaves like any other subject: an hourly rate inside the published Dubai bands multiplied by the weeks you commit to. What sits alongside it is a making cost that arrives in irregular lumps and belongs to nobody in particular. Materials for a prototype that gets rebuilt three times. Printing and plotting for a folder. Access to a machine the school does not own. A component ordered twice because the first dimension was wrong. None of that appears on a tutoring quote, and all of it lands on the same household.

The hourly figures in this market are public and spread extremely wide. EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52 at the budget online end. Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. TutorChase quotes AED 270. Bestimate's Dubai rate table puts a qualified subject tutor working online at AED 150 to 300 and specialist IB, IGCSE and A-Level support at AED 200 to 450 and above. BartyED publishes AED 650 for a premium named tutor. Each of those is the provider's own published figure, read in October 2026, and they appear here as market context rather than as an IB Gram price list.

Design Technology quotes tend to sit at the specialist end of that spread for a checkable reason. The subject needs a tutor who can read a technical drawing, judge a CAD model, mark a written paper, and supervise a folder against criteria that reward process rather than product. That combination is rarer than a physicist or a mathematician, so the price reflects supply. Content difficulty is not the mechanism, and a provider who explains the premium that way has probably not taught the subject.

Where families genuinely lose money is sequencing. A design project that is reviewed for the first time after the prototype exists cannot be redirected without either discarding work or submitting a folder whose early stages do not justify the thing that got built. The second outcome is common and it caps the mark. Reviewing a specification and a set of early ideas costs two or three hours; rescuing a folder built on a thin specification costs ten or more and still reads as a repair. Buying help earliest in this subject is the cheapest version of buying it at all.

Delivery is online. Lessons run one-to-one over live video with screen sharing, which for a subject assessed through a documented folder is a better fit than it sounds: the student's own CAD model, drawings and folder pages are on screen for both parties, annotated, and saved. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we run only in India. The making happens where the student makes things, which is their school workshop, their home or a facility they have arranged, and a tutor is not present for it in any delivery model.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The habits Design Technology assesses are started earlier and finished in the Diploma core. These are the three levels a Dubai family is normally dealing with when they contact us about this subject.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme Design

Middle Years Design is where the design cycle is learned or faked. Its criteria reward inquiry and analysis, the development of ideas, the creation of a solution and honest evaluation, in that order. Students who have been rewarded for producing an attractive final object without documenting the reasoning behind it arrive in the Diploma with a habit that is actively penalised, because the Diploma folder marks the process and treats the artefact as evidence of it.

Dubai runs both routes into the Diploma: Middle Years Design to Year 11 in IB schools, and IGCSE Design and Technology in the British-curriculum sector. IGCSE students usually arrive with better making skills and less practice at documenting iteration, because their coursework rewarded the outcome more directly. We check which habit a student brings before planning any hours.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme Design Technology

Design Technology is a Group 4 subject assessed through written papers and a design project documented as a folder with page or screen limits. The written papers test core design content plus extension material at the higher level, and the folder is marked on criteria covering analysis, development, modelling, testing and evaluation. Confirm the current component structure, criteria letters, mark allocations and page limits with your school's IB coordinator before planning against them.

Dubai provision varies enormously. Some schools have a well-equipped design suite with laser cutting, 3D printing and a technician. Others run the subject with a computer room and goodwill. Which of those your child is in determines what tutoring has to supply and what the making budget looks like, and it is worth asking the head of design directly rather than relying on a prospectus photograph.

Extended Essay and the Group 4 project

An Extended Essay in Design Technology is a research essay rather than a making project, and that catches students out: it needs a researchable question with evidence, not a prototype. The Group 4 project is collaborative and assessed on participation, and design students often contribute the modelling and prototyping skill the group lacks, which is useful experience and carries no marks for the artefact itself.

Dubai offers genuinely strong Extended Essay material in this subject: cooling and shading in high ambient temperatures, materials behaviour in sustained heat, water use in buildings, and product adaptation for a market with a very wide range of household budgets. The constraint is finding evidence rather than finding a topic, and the first supervision session is spent on whether sources exist.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Design Technology students in Dubai usually need one or two neighbours covered as well. These are the related Diploma courses our tutors take for the same families, with the demand each one makes.

Design Technology

HL and SL

Assessed through written papers and a documented design project. Marks turn on the quality of the process evidence: a specification that is testable, development that shows real iteration, modelling that informs decisions, and evaluation against the original criteria. The commonest loss is a strong artefact with a folder that does not justify it.

Physics

HL and SL

Where structural, mechanical and electrical decisions in a design project stop being guesses. Students taking both write stronger justifications on loading, materials and energy, and are far less likely to specify a mechanism that cannot work. The most useful pairing in this subject.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Relevant to any project with embedded control, sensing or an interface. The programming discipline also helps with documentation habits, since both subjects reward a record of what was tried and why rather than a presentation of the finished state.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Supplies the geometry, trigonometry and modelling a technical drawing and a dimensioned CAD model assume. Students weak here produce drawings that look right and do not resolve, and the error usually surfaces only when something is cut.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The better route for design students who need data handling more than pure technique: user research results, testing data and statistical treatment of trials. Directly useful in the testing and evaluation stages of the folder.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Underpins the materials content, including polymers, composites, corrosion and degradation. A design student with Chemistry writes material selection justifications that explain behaviour rather than restating a property table, which is where the better marks sit.

Visual Arts

HL and SL

Frequently taken alongside Design Technology by Dubai students heading toward architecture or product design. The two reward different things: Visual Arts marks intention and critical framing, Design Technology marks the resolution of a specified problem. Keeping that distinction clear improves both folders.

Business Management

HL and SL

Useful for the commercial side of the design content: markets, costing, production scale and product lifecycles. Students taking both are better at the commercial production sections of the papers, which other candidates tend to answer in generalities.

Environmental Systems and Societies

Both levels, confirm with your school

Overlaps on sustainability, life-cycle analysis and resource use. Helpful for a design student whose project claims an environmental benefit, because it supplies the vocabulary and the evidence standard to support that claim rather than asserting it.

Extended Essay

Diploma core

Four thousand words of independent research, and in this subject a research essay rather than a project. Supervision is questioning and written feedback on the student's own drafts; the school's registered supervisor signs the work off.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Design Technology support works best bought against a stage of the project, because each stage has an obvious deliverable and a point past which help is worth much less. These are the four blocks Dubai families book.

Specification and early-ideas review

Two to four sessions, booked before anything is built, and the highest-value block in the subject by a wide margin. The work is interrogation: is the design problem defined from real user research, is every specification point testable, do the early ideas address the brief or restate it. A specification that cannot be tested produces a folder whose later stages have nothing to measure against, and that is a cap on the mark rather than a detail.

  • User research reviewed for evidence rather than assumption
  • Every specification point tested for whether it can be measured
  • Early ideas checked for genuine divergence rather than cosmetic variants
  • A testing plan sketched now, so the later stages have criteria to meet

Folder review cycle

Recurring sessions across the development and modelling stages, where the student brings the pages they have produced and gets them read against the criteria. The tutor annotates on screen, the student makes the changes, and the next session starts from the revised version. This is the block that prevents a folder drifting into a photograph album of a finished object with no visible reasoning.

  • Pages read against criteria rather than against taste
  • Annotation on a shared screen, with the student keeping file control
  • Iteration evidenced as decisions taken, not as images collected
  • Page and screen limits respected from the start rather than cut later

Written papers block

Weekly or fortnightly sessions on the examined content, which students treat as secondary to the project and should not. One timed question set per session, marked and returned, with teaching driven by the script. The extension material at higher level is scheduled as its own run of sessions because it is taught last and practised least, exactly like an option paper in other sciences.

  • One timed question set written and marked each session
  • Materials, production and commercial content taught with real examples
  • Higher level extension scheduled as a named block, not absorbed
  • A running list of the student's recurring errors

Late-stage triage

Booked when a project has stalled or a folder is thin weeks before an internal deadline. Sessions are honest about what can still change: usually the testing, the evaluation and the documentation of decisions already taken, rarely the specification or the direction. We say at the consultation which of those your child is in, because selling a rebuild that cannot happen is the easiest money in this market and the least useful.

  • A written statement of what can and cannot still be changed
  • Testing and evaluation prioritised, since those marks stay reachable
  • Existing decisions documented retrospectively but honestly
  • No pretence that a late folder review is the same as an early one

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The making budget, and who actually pays for it

Ask the head of design two questions at the start of DP1: what does the school supply, and what does a family supply. The answers vary widely between Dubai schools and they determine a cost no tutoring quote will ever mention. Some schools provide sheet material, filament, consumables and technician time as part of the course. Some provide the machines and expect families to bring material. Some provide neither and the subject is run around what a student can source themselves.

The spend itself is not usually dramatic in a single line. It becomes significant through iteration, which is exactly what the criteria reward. A project that documents three physical iterations has bought material three times. A student who prints a part, finds the tolerance wrong and prints again has paid twice for one component. A folder printed and bound for submission costs more than families expect in a city where plotting and large-format printing are priced commercially. None of this is a reason to avoid the subject; it is a reason to plan it.

The practical lever is project strategy rather than frugality. A design resolved around the assembly of bought components, with modelling and simulation doing the iteration work, costs a fraction of one resolved around fabricating new parts, and it can score identically because the criteria reward documented reasoning rather than expenditure. Students in Marina apartments arrive at this strategy by necessity and often produce cleaner folders than students with a garage.

The table lists the spend lines, says who normally carries each in a Dubai school, and names the way to reduce it that does not cost marks. Confirm your own school's position before assuming any row applies, because provision in this emirate is genuinely inconsistent.

02

Where a Dubai student can actually get something made

This is the question that separates a workable design project from an ambitious one, and it has a Dubai-specific answer. The city has a large and accessible fabrication economy, concentrated in Al Quoz and the industrial areas, that will make almost anything. What it is not set up for is a school student arriving with one part and a drawing. Commercial workshops price for commercial jobs, with minimum charges and lead times, and they expect a drawing they can work from rather than a sketch.

The order of preference for a Diploma student is therefore reasonably clear. The school workshop first, because it is free, supervised and designed for this. Additive printing second, at school or on a domestic machine, because it absorbs iteration cheaply. Assembly of bought components third, which removes fabrication from the critical path entirely. A commercial job last, consolidated into a single order, with a dimensioned drawing prepared properly and a parent making the arrangement.

One route worth asking about specifically is institutional access. Several Dubai universities and technology parks run facilities that occasionally open to schools through a formal arrangement, and where your child's school has one, it changes the project's horizon. The head of design will know whether such an arrangement exists; a student emailing a university directly generally will not get far.

The table lists the routes with what each can realistically produce, how access works, and what to confirm before a project design depends on it. Confirm every access position yourself before committing a project to it: facilities, policies and supervision requirements change, and a design that depends on a machine the student turns out not to be allowed to use is a design that has to be rethought in the worst week of the year.

03

Costing support by project stage rather than by the hour

An hourly rate is a poor planning tool in this subject because the stages need wildly different amounts of help. The specification stage needs very few hours and they are the most valuable hours in the project. The development stage needs recurring short reviews. The testing and evaluation stages need a burst. The written papers need steady low-level work across two years. Quoting all of that as one monthly figure hides the shape of it and encourages a family to buy a uniform retainer, which is usually more expensive and less effective.

The breakdown below is what we see for a reasonably diligent Dubai student whose school teaches the subject competently. Where a school runs Design Technology without a specialist, the papers line roughly doubles and the folder line grows, because the tutor is teaching rather than supplementing. Where a school has a strong design department, families often buy only the specification review and the testing burst, and that is a perfectly sensible purchase.

The AED column applies other providers' published market bands rather than an IB Gram rate, and the hours are planning estimates for a committed student rather than promises. There is deliberately no total, because the stages are a menu. The single most common mistake we see is a family buying twelve months of weekly sessions when four well-placed blocks would have cost less and produced a better folder.

Read the first row against the second. Specification work costs the fewest hours of anything on the list and determines whether the rest of the project has anything to measure itself against. Development review costs the most hours and can only improve what the specification allowed. A family with a fixed amount to spend should buy the top of the table before the middle of it, which is the opposite of the order in which the market tends to be sold to them, because the early block is the one that looks unnecessary at the moment it is worth the most.

Software, file formats and the licences nobody budgets for

  • Work in the package the school licences, not a package you buy
  • Educational licences exist for the main modelling tools: ask the design department
  • One version-named folder structure, audited once, saves the final weekend
  • Declare downloaded components, textures and anything generated

Design Technology families occasionally arrive having been told they need to buy professional modelling software, and they almost never do. Schools licence what they teach, and the sensible default is to work in whatever the school uses so that files move between home, school and the tutor without conversion. Where a student needs something at home, the major modelling packages run free or low-cost educational licences for individuals in full-time education, and the school's design department will know which applies.

The real costs here are smaller and less obvious. Cloud storage large enough for a two-year folder with full-resolution photographs. A drawing tablet, where a student does their ideation digitally and is fighting a trackpad. Printing, if the school submits physical folders. And the time cost of file conversion, which is not money but is the thing that goes wrong on the last weekend before an internal deadline when a model opens in the wrong units or a drawing loses its dimensions.

There is a discipline point attached. Students who work in one package, keep a sensible folder structure, and name files by version and date lose nothing on the last weekend. Students who have the same project spread across three applications and a phone camera roll spend the final days reconstructing rather than finishing, and the folder shows it. Imposing that structure takes one session and it is one of the quietly valuable things an outside reviewer does, because a teacher with a full class rarely has time to audit a student's file management.

Where generated or downloaded content enters the workflow, declare it. A downloaded CAD component, a texture, a reference image or anything produced by a generative tool has to be acknowledged in line with the school's own policy, and the coordinator is the person to ask what that policy requires. The folder is an argument about the student's own decisions, and unacknowledged material undermines the only thing it is marked on.

05

The restart: the most expensive thing in a design project

A design project rarely fails because a student cannot make something. It fails because the direction was set on a specification that could not be tested, and that only becomes visible when the testing stage arrives and there is nothing to test against. At that point a student has two options and both cost. They can restart, which discards months of documented work in the term where there is least time. Or they can submit a folder whose later stages do not connect to its earlier ones, which reads exactly as it is.

This is why we price the specification review as the first block and the smallest. Two to four hours spent making every specification point measurable, and checking that the user research is evidence rather than assumption, routinely prevents the whole sequence. It is a hard thing to sell, because at that stage nothing appears to be wrong and the student is enthusiastic. It is also the only point at which the expensive failure is cheap to avoid.

If you are already past it, the honest answer is triage rather than rebuild, and we will say so at the consultation. Late in a project the reachable marks are in testing, evaluation and the documentation of decisions already made. The specification and the direction are usually fixed. A provider who offers to rebuild a folder in six weeks is selling something that does not exist, and a family who has been told the project can be transformed late should treat that claim with real scepticism.

There is a version of this that is worth paying for late, though. Where a student has done good work and documented it badly, the content exists and the folder can be reorganised to show it. That is a genuine recovery and it is different from a rebuild. Telling the two apart is what the first session is for, and it takes an hour rather than a term.

06

What the school already provides, and what you would be paying for twice

Before buying anything, map what the school already does. In a well-resourced Dubai design department, a Diploma student gets timetabled workshop access, a technician who can help with a machine, a teacher who reads folder drafts, deadlines enforced internally, and the examined content taught properly. A family buying weekly tutoring on top of that is paying twice for most of it, and the useful purchases narrow to a handful of things the school structurally cannot provide.

What a school cannot easily provide is unlimited draft reading, because a teacher with a full timetable cannot read a folder every fortnight for every student. It cannot provide an outside view, which matters because a teacher who has watched a project develop is the least able person to notice that its specification never made sense. And it cannot provide the file-management and documentation audit described earlier, which is boring, valuable and unglamorous.

Where a school does not have a specialist, the picture inverts and nearly everything is worth buying: the content, the folder supervision, the drawing standards and the project strategy. That is a different and larger purchase, and it should be priced as teaching rather than as supplementing. Families in this position are the ones who most need an honest conversation about hours before they commit.

The table sets the two settings side by side. Use it to decide what to ask for rather than what to buy: the fastest way to waste money in this subject is to buy a generic weekly slot when what was needed was three specific interventions.

WHAT A DUBAI SCHOOL PROVIDES AGAINST WHAT OUTSIDE HELP IS ACTUALLY FOR

07

Three questions that make two Design Technology quotes comparable

  • Is folder reading between sessions inside the quoted rate?
  • What exactly will you refuse to do with my child's files?
  • How and when will the written papers be covered?
  • Describe a design project you supervised that went wrong, and why

Quotes in this market are not comparable as given, because providers include different work at similar prices. Three questions resolve most of it, and all three can be asked in a first phone call before anything is paid.

The first is whether folder reading between sessions is inside the hourly rate or billed separately. In a subject assessed through a documented folder this is the main unit of work, and a tutor who reads eight pages properly has spent most of an hour doing it. A rate that covers contact time only is cheaper and leaves the central task undone. The second is what the tutor will refuse to do with a student's files, and the answer should be specific: no editing of the student's CAD model, no producing of drawings, no writing of folder text. A provider who cannot name a refusal is a provider with no line.

The third is about the examined papers, and it catches people out. Ask how the written content will be covered and when, because a tutor who is strong on projects and vague on the papers is half a Design Technology tutor. The folder carries internal marks and the papers carry the rest, and a student with a strong folder and unpractised papers lands in the middle regardless.

A fourth question is worth asking if the subject matters a great deal to your family: how many Diploma design projects has this person supervised to completion, and can they describe one that went wrong and why. The answer to the second half is the informative one. Everybody has a success story; the people who have genuinely done this have a specification failure they still think about.

08

Honesty when money can buy making

Design Technology has an integrity problem the other sciences do not, because part of the assessed work is a physical object and physical objects can be bought. A family in Dubai can commission a workshop to build something to a drawing, and the result will be better finished than anything a sixteen-year-old makes in a school workshop. If the folder then presents that object as the student's own making, the submission misrepresents what happened.

The workable distinction is between a process a student directed and a process a student outsourced. Commissioning a specific operation that the school cannot perform, documenting that it was commissioned, stating the drawing supplied and the instructions given, is legitimate engineering practice and can be written up honestly. Handing over a brief and receiving a finished product is not, and the folder cannot be made to say otherwise. Where there is any doubt, the coordinator decides, not the tutor and not the family.

Generated content raises the same question in a different register. A rendered image produced by a generative tool, a specification drafted by one, or an evaluation paragraph lightly edited from one is not the student's work. In this subject such text has a recognisable profile: fluent, plausible and untethered from the actual project, with an evaluation that would fit any product. The school's acknowledgement policy governs what must be declared, and the coordinator is the person to ask.

Our own line is narrow and we state it before anyone pays. A tutor may ask any question about the project and may not supply any sentence, any drawing or any model. The tutor can say that a specification point cannot be measured, that a tolerance will not work, that a folder page shows a result without the decision behind it, or that an evaluation is generic. The tutor does not propose the design, does not edit the student's files, and does not produce content that appears in the submission. We also do not reproduce or supply IB subject guides, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables; those belong to the board and are the school's to distribute.

09

What a parent is entitled to ask, check and have deleted

Three things are worth knowing before engaging anyone for a UAE student, and they are rarely set out. The first is the permit position. Private tutoring here is lawful and regulated: the private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. The route is the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation service for private tutor licensing, which lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time. Those operating without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and since no fine schedule is published, no figure is quoted here. A UAE-resident tutor can be asked to show their permit, and a reasonable one will.

The second is what nobody can claim. A tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai is a different legal entity from an individual tutor and needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute. IB Gram holds no such permit, occupies no premises in the UAE, and claims no approval, accreditation, licensing or endorsement from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the IB or any examination board. Any provider advertising regulator-approved tutors is making a claim worth asking them to evidence. Separately, ADEK's professional-ethics rules in Abu Dhabi bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct points the same way, so a family should not arrange for a child to be tutored privately by their own class teacher.

The third is data, and it matters more in this subject than in most. A design project generates photographs of a student's work, sometimes of the student making it, drawings, models and written drafts. Under the UAE's personal data protection law, Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021, a family is entitled to know what is collected about a child, why, how long it is kept and how to have it removed. Ask any provider those four questions. Ours is that session materials and shared files belong to the student, are used only to teach them, and are deleted on request; nothing of a child's work is published or used as marketing without written permission from a parent.

Delivery is online: one-to-one over live video with screen sharing, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time and moved post-Iftar in Ramadan. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we run only in India. The making happens wherever the student makes things and no tutor is present for it in any model. If no Design Technology specialist is free in your slot we say so and estimate when one will be, rather than assigning a physicist quietly. A free trial lesson comes first, with no card required to book it.

Lessons are online, so an address does not change who can teach. It does change the school's design provision, how far a student is from anywhere that can make a part, and when a session can realistically start.

Al Quoz and Al Khail Gate

The emirate's workshop and fabrication district, and the most useful area in Dubai for a design student who needs something cut, printed or welded. Access is through a parent arranging a commercial job rather than through a student turning up, and minimum order quantities are the usual obstacle.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

University campuses and technology-park facilities nearby, which occasionally open fabrication access through a school partnership. Worth asking the head of design whether such an arrangement exists, because where it does it removes most of the making budget.

Al Barsha and Dubai Hills

A dense cluster of IB and British schools, several with genuinely equipped design suites including laser cutting and 3D printing with a technician on site. Students here more often need folder discipline than fabrication access, which is a cheaper problem to solve.

Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Lake Towers

Apartment living with no space, no ventilation and no tolerance for dust, so prototyping has to be modelled, printed or made at school. Projects designed around assembly of bought components rather than fabrication of new ones work far better for students here.

Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim and Al Sufouh

Villa households with garage or outdoor space, which makes hand-built prototyping feasible in the cooler months. Afternoon traffic on the beach-road corridor pushes session times past 17:00 for most families in this stretch.

Arabian Ranches, Motor City and Dubai Sports City

Space to build and a long drive to anywhere that sells materials, so projects here benefit from consolidating purchases into one trip rather than iterating with repeat visits. Weekend morning sessions dominate because weekday evenings are taken by co-curriculars.

Mirdif, Al Warqa and Dubai Festival City

Wide catchment across several curricula, with retail and trade suppliers reasonably close. Design Technology candidates here are often the only ones in their year, which means the folder gets little peer comparison and benefits more than usual from outside review.

Downtown, Business Bay and Jumeirah Village

Mixed residential and commercial, with studio and maker-type facilities within reach. Shorter school runs make these among the most flexible areas in the emirate for scheduling, including the mid-afternoon slots most families cannot use.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Dubai IB World Schools with established design provision

Design Technology needs equipment, a technician and timetabled workshop access, so it appears in Dubai where a school has invested in all three. KHDA inspects these schools annually on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak. Ask the head of design what machines are available to a Diploma student unsupervised, and what the school pays for.

Dubai schools where design students work with limited workshop access

Plenty of Dubai schools run the subject with a computer room, a 3D printer and a willing teacher. That is a workable setting and it changes the project strategy: designs resolve around modelling, assembly of bought components and documented testing rather than around fabrication from raw material.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the specification and two folder pages

The most informative first documents are the current specification and any two pages of the folder, plus the school's internal deadline. A specialist can tell from the specification alone whether the project is heading somewhere testable, which is the information a Dubai family most needs before spending anything.

  2. 02

We say which stage you are in, honestly

Early in a project, the useful block is specification review. Late, it is triage on testing, evaluation and documentation. These are different purchases at different prices and we name which one applies rather than offering a generic weekly slot that suits neither.

  3. 03

A free trial lesson on a real page

The trial is a working session, usually spent reading one folder page or one specification against the criteria and showing what a reviewer sees. No card is required and nothing is charged if you stop there. Families often take that single piece of feedback and act on it alone, which is a fine outcome.

  4. 04

A written plan by stage with deliverables

After the trial you receive a short plan naming the stages, the hours each needs, what exists at the end of each one, and what the student has to produce between sessions. The AED context on this page is other providers' market data; your own quote comes from the consultation.

  5. 05

Annotated pages stay with the student

Every review returns the student's own pages with annotation, and the files stay under the student's control throughout. Reading three consecutive reviews shows a parent whether the same weakness keeps recurring, which is how we decide a block is finished rather than letting it roll on.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The making budget is on the page

Every provider quotes the teaching and none of them mentions material, printing, components, iterations and external fabrication. We set those out with who normally pays each in a Dubai school, so a family can see the real cost of this subject before committing.

Costed by stage, not sold as a retainer

The specification stage needs two to four hours and is worth the most. Development needs recurring short reviews. Testing needs a burst. Pricing all of it as one monthly figure hides that shape, and families who buy the menu rather than the package usually spend less.

Fabrication routes that exist in this city

Al Quoz will make anything for a commercial job with a dimensioned drawing and a minimum charge, and that is a parent arrangement rather than a student errand. We plan projects around what a Dubai student can actually access, including when the answer is to design around assembly.

Files stay the student's

A tutor may ask any question about the project and may not supply any sentence, drawing or model. We do not edit a student's CAD files or write folder text, and we say that before any payment, which is a shorter list of refusals than most providers are willing to give.

A stated position on data about your child

Design projects generate photographs, drawings and drafts. Under Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 you are entitled to know what is held, why and for how long. Ours is used only to teach your child, deleted on request, and never published without written parental permission.

No regulator claims, no invented numbers

IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, Ministry or examination-board approval and claims none. Every AED figure here is attributed to the provider that published it and dated October 2026, and unverifiable figures, including IB session dates, are left out.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What does a Design Technology project actually cost to build in Dubai?+

Less than families fear if the project is designed well, and considerably more if it is designed around fabricating new parts. The lines are material and stock, additive printing consumables, bought components, repeat iterations when a dimension is wrong, folder output if submission is physical, and external fabrication with its minimum charge. Iteration is what grows the total, and iteration is also what the criteria reward, so the lever is strategy rather than frugality. A project resolved around assembly of bought components with modelling doing the iteration work can score identically for a fraction of the spend.

Does our school pay for prototype materials?+

It depends on the school and you should ask the head of design directly at the start of DP1. Dubai provision is genuinely inconsistent: some departments supply sheet material, filament, consumables and technician time as part of the course; some supply the machines and expect families to bring material; a few supply neither, and the subject runs on what students source themselves. The answer changes both your budget and the sensible project strategy, so it is worth having in writing. Ask at the same time which machines a Diploma student is permitted to use unsupervised.

Where can my child get a part printed or machined in Dubai?+

School first, because it is free and supervised. A domestic or school 3D printer second, since additive printing absorbs iteration cheaply. For anything the school cannot make, the commercial workshops in Al Quoz and the industrial areas will machine, weld or cut almost anything, but they price for commercial jobs with a minimum charge and a lead time, and they expect a dimensioned drawing rather than a sketch. That is a parent commissioning a job, not a student turning up. Consolidate every external part into one order, and confirm the drawing standard the workshop needs before relying on a date.

Which CAD software do we need to buy?+

Almost certainly none. Work in whatever package the school licences and teaches, so files move between home, school and any reviewer without conversion losing dimensions or units. Where a student needs access at home, the major modelling packages run free or low-cost educational licences for individuals in full-time education, and the design department will know which applies to your school. The costs that are real here are smaller: enough cloud storage for a two-year folder at full photographic resolution, and a drawing tablet if the student ideates digitally and is fighting a trackpad.

How much does it cost to restart a design project?+

More than anything else in the subject, which is why the specification review is the block we sell first. A restart discards months of documented work in the term where time is shortest, and the usual alternative, submitting a folder whose later stages do not connect to its earlier ones, caps the mark. Two to four hours making every specification point measurable, early, routinely prevents the whole sequence. If you are already past that point, ask for triage on testing, evaluation and documentation rather than a rebuild, and treat any offer to transform a folder in six weeks with real scepticism.

Is it cheaper to buy support by stage or by the month?+

By stage, in most cases, and by a meaningful margin. The stages need very different amounts of help: specification needs two to four hours and is the most valuable, development needs recurring short reviews across two terms, testing and evaluation need bursts, and the written papers need steady low-level work. A uniform monthly retainer charges the same for all of that and encourages buying hours in the weeks where they add least. Families who treat the stages as a menu typically spend less and submit better folders, which is not what a retainer model is designed to encourage.

What should we expect to pay for a folder review in Dubai?+

The published Dubai bands put a qualified subject tutor working online at AED 150 to 300 an hour and specialist IB support at AED 200 to 450 and above, with Design Technology sitting in the specialist band because the tutor needs to read drawings, judge a CAD model and mark papers. Those are other providers' own figures read in October 2026, not an IB Gram price list. The question that actually changes the value is whether reading the pages between sessions is inside the rate, because in a folder-assessed subject that reading is the main unit of work.

Does the higher level of Design Technology cost more to support?+

Usually in hours rather than in rate. Any extension material is taught last, revised least and practised almost never, which makes it behave like an option paper in the other sciences: it needs its own named block of question practice rather than absorption into weekly lessons. Schedule it in the term before mocks, when the time exists, rather than alongside the folder write-up when it does not. Confirm the current structure and weightings with your school's IB coordinator before planning hours against them, because cohorts in Dubai are working from different guide versions.

Can my child commission a workshop to build the prototype?+

A specific operation the school cannot perform can be commissioned and written up honestly, provided the folder states that it was commissioned, what drawing was supplied and what instructions were given. That is ordinary engineering practice. Handing over a brief and receiving a finished product is different, and a folder cannot be made to describe it as the student's making. The distinction is between a process the student directed and one they outsourced. Where there is any doubt, the IB coordinator decides what is acceptable for your child's cohort, not the tutor and not the workshop.

Who owns the photographs of my child's prototype?+

Your child does, and you are entitled to say what happens to them. A design project generates photographs of work and sometimes of the student making it, plus drawings, models and drafts. Under Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 on personal data protection, a family can ask any provider what is collected, why, how long it is kept and how to have it removed. Our position is that session materials and shared files belong to the student, are used only to teach them, are deleted on request, and are never published or used as marketing without written parental permission. Ask every provider the same four questions.

What questions make two Design Technology quotes comparable?+

Three, and all of them can be asked before paying. Is folder reading between sessions inside the hourly rate, or billed separately? What exactly will you refuse to do with my child's files? How and when will the examined papers be covered? A fourth is worth asking if the subject matters: how many Diploma design projects have you supervised to completion, and describe one that went wrong and why. The second half of that answer is the informative part, because everyone has a success story and only people who have really done this have a specification failure they still think about.

What if our school has no workshop at all?+

Then the project strategy changes and the grade ceiling does not have to. The criteria reward documented reasoning, iteration and testing rather than fabrication expenditure, so a design resolved around the assembly of bought components, with modelling and simulation carrying the iteration evidence, can score as well as one built from raw stock. Additive printing covers most form and fit testing cheaply. Confirm with the teacher whether your cohort's criteria accept digital-only testing for any stage. Students in Dubai apartments reach this strategy by necessity and frequently submit cleaner folders than students with a garage.

Is a Design Technology tutor more expensive than a Physics tutor in Dubai?+

Usually, and the reason is supply rather than difficulty. A Design Technology tutor has to read a technical drawing, judge a CAD model, mark a written paper and supervise a folder against process criteria. That combination is rarer than a physicist or a mathematician in this market, so quotes sit in the published AED 200 to 450 specialist band rather than the AED 150 to 300 qualified-tutor band. If a provider explains the premium by saying the subject is harder, ask instead how many design projects they have supervised, because that is the competence being priced.

How many hours does a two-year design project need?+

For a student in a well-resourced Dubai design department, around fifteen to twenty-five hours of outside review across the whole project: two to four on the specification, six to ten of recurring folder reviews, two to four on drawing and CAD critique, and bursts of two to three each on testing and evaluation. Where the school runs the subject without a specialist, expect that to roughly double because the tutor is teaching rather than supplementing. Those are planning estimates for a committed student, not promises, and the written papers are a separate line on top.

Can we pay for only the written papers and skip project support?+

Yes, and for some students it is the right purchase. If the school has a strong design department reading folder drafts and the weakness is examination technique, buying only the papers block is sensible and cheaper. The reverse also happens: a student whose papers are fine and whose folder is drifting should buy reviews rather than lessons. We would rather say which of those applies at the consultation than sell both. What does not work is buying neither and hoping, since the folder and the papers each carry a substantial share of the grade.

What should the first Design Technology session actually cover?+

Reading real work, not touring the syllabus. A useful first hour takes the current specification and two folder pages and reads them against the criteria, which tells a family immediately whether the project is heading somewhere testable and whether the folder is showing decisions or just progress. It should also establish what the school supplies, which machines the student may use, and which guide version the cohort follows. A first session spent explaining what Design Technology is has answered a question nobody asked and cost a family an hour of diagnosis.
