IB IGCSE Tutor for Arcadia School Students in Dubai

Searching for an IB IGCSE tutor for Arcadia School students in Dubai usually means one thing: an English grade that will not budge despite a child who reads well and talks fluently. English is the subject where effort and marks diverge most, because the papers reward structure and selection rather than fluency. This page maps the components, the assessment objectives and the marks that leak. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

English marks are not awarded for writing well

A fluent child with a stuck English grade is the most common English enquiry in Dubai, and it confuses parents more than any other subject. The child reads widely. They argue well at the table. Their written English has no obvious faults. And the grade sits at a 5 or a 6 for two years without moving. Nothing about this is mysterious once you look at a marked script, because IGCSE English does not award marks for writing well. It awards marks against assessment objectives, and fluency satisfies only some of them.

Take the reading components. A question asking a candidate to explain how a writer creates an effect is not asking for an opinion about the passage, however perceptive. It is asking for a quotation, identification of the technique, and an account of the effect on a reader, with the three connected. A fluent pupil writes four confident sentences about the passage and scores two of five, because the mark scheme was looking for selection and analysis and received impression and summary. This is a pattern, not an accident, and it recurs across every reading question on the paper.

The writing components work the same way in reverse. Directed writing marks are split between content and form on one side and language accuracy on the other, which means a pupil can write beautifully in the wrong register and lose half the available marks. A letter that reads like an essay, a speech with no audience address, a report with no structure: each of these is a form failure by a pupil whose English is perfectly good. Nobody tells them, because the report says 'strong written expression' and the grade says 5.

Literature compounds the problem with a logistical twist that matters in Dubai specifically. Set texts differ school by school and year by year, so generic literature tutoring is close to useless. The work has to start from your child's own text list, and a tutor who begins talking about Of Mice and Men before asking what the school has chosen has already shown you something. Beyond that, literature marks reward quotation economy and argument structure, which are trainable, rather than love of reading, which is not.

This page therefore works component by component. It sets out what each part of the English Language paper assesses, how the assessment objectives split the marks, what directed writing actually rewards, how to handle set texts the school chose, and the particular marks an English-as-an-additional-language pupil loses that are not language marks at all. Tuition for Dubai families is one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service offered only in India.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

English develops differently from mathematics: there is no cumulative wall, but there is a habit that hardens. Each stage below has a distinct piece of work attached to it.

KS3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Key Stage 3 English

The years in which a pupil forms their default essay shape, and the shape that forms is usually narrative rather than analytical. A Year 8 pupil who learns to quote, name a technique and explain its effect in one connected sentence has acquired the skill the whole of IGCSE reading assessment rests on. A Year 11 pupil learning it is doing so against the clock.

Dubai schools set English in many cases, and a Year 9 set placement influences whether a pupil is entered for First Language English or English as a Second Language at IGCSE. Those are different qualifications with different ceilings and different recognition, so the placement deserves checking rather than accepting.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE English

Reading and writing components examined terminally, with an optional coursework route in some specifications and a separate speaking and listening endorsement in others. Confirm which components your child's centre has entered them for, because the revision needed for a coursework route differs substantially from the examined one.

UAE candidates sit June and November. For English, the November series is a workable single-subject retake because the skills are already developed and the work is technique rather than content. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and the school knows which timetable applies to it.

DP and A LevelAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma English and International A Level

The IB Diploma requires a Language A course at Higher or Standard Level, assessed partly through an individual oral and written tasks rather than wholly by terminal examination. A Level English Literature and Language are examined more conventionally. Both assume the analytical habit that IGCSE reading components were trying to build.

Dubai sixth forms publish English entry grades, and a First Language English grade is read differently from an English as a Second Language grade by some departments. Checking which qualification a sixth form expects, in Year 10 rather than after results, is a short conversation that prevents a long problem.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

English first, with the subjects whose marks depend most heavily on written expression next. Each entry names the specification code where one applies and the specific place marks tend to go.

First Language English (Cambridge 0500)

IGCSE

Reading and directed writing components, with an optional coursework route in some centres. Marks go to selection and analysis in reading, and to form and register in writing. Fluent pupils routinely lose both without their reports mentioning it.

First Language English (Cambridge 0990)

IGCSE 9-1

The 9-1 graded version of the same qualification. Identical skills, different grade scale, and sixth forms in Dubai read the two scales interchangeably. Check which code is on the entry before buying past-paper practice.

Literature in English (Cambridge 0475 and 0992)

IGCSE and IGCSE 9-1

Set texts chosen by the school, so the work has to start from your child's own list. Quotation economy and argument structure are the trainable elements; reading the text remains the pupil's own work and no tutor should substitute for it.

English as a Second Language (Cambridge 0510, 0511 and 0993)

IGCSE

A different qualification from First Language English, with its own ceiling and its own recognition position at sixth form. Worth confirming which one your child is entered for, because the two are frequently conflated in conversation.

English Language A (Pearson Edexcel 4EA1)

International GCSE

Pearson's route, with a different paper structure and a coursework option in some arrangements. A pupil transferring between Dubai schools mid-course needs the specification reconciled rather than a term of general support.

English Literature (Pearson Edexcel 4ET1)

International GCSE

Poetry and prose anthology plus set texts, with assessment arrangements that differ from Cambridge's. Again, the text list and the component structure are the starting point and both come from the school.

History (Cambridge IGCSE 0470)

IGCSE

Source analysis is the same skill as reading response wearing a different hat: select, attribute, infer, evaluate. Pupils who improve in English reading usually improve here within weeks, which makes it a useful second subject to pair.

Geography (Cambridge IGCSE 0460)

IGCSE

Case-study recall plus extended written answers where structure decides the mark. The skills paper on maps, graphs and photographs is separately trainable and routinely neglected in revision.

Business Studies and Economics

IGCSE

Evaluation questions carry the grade, and they want a judgement with reasons on both sides rather than description. Pupils strong on content who write four marks of description for a six-mark evaluation lose an avoidable grade.

Arabic as an Additional Language

IGCSE and school-stream

Runs alongside the Arabic provision every Dubai private school must deliver under KHDA's mandatory-subject requirements, regardless of the licensed curriculum. Script accuracy and reading fluency are the measurable targets.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

English moves through marked and rewritten work, so all three formats below are built round the pupil producing writing rather than receiving explanation.

A marked-script diagnostic, two sessions

The pupil writes one reading response and one directed writing task under timing, and both are marked against the published assessment objectives. The output names where the marks went: selection, analysis, form, register or accuracy. That naming is the whole of the diagnosis, and families almost never have it before they start paying.

  • One reading question and one writing task, both under examination timing
  • Marked against the assessment objectives, not against general impressions
  • A written note of which objective is costing the most marks
  • A recommendation with a stated number of sessions and an end point

Weekly one-to-one on one objective

An hour a week aimed at the single assessment objective costing the most marks. A pupil losing analysis marks does not need more reading; they need the quote-technique-effect sentence drilled until it is automatic. A pupil losing form marks needs four letters, speeches and reports written and marked, which is a finite piece of work.

  • A piece of the pupil's own writing produced every week
  • Marked between sessions and rewritten in the next one
  • Progress measured as marks recovered against the objective
  • Pause without penalty during holidays and study leave

Set-text work from the school's own list

Literature support built entirely on the texts your child's school chose, because generic literature tutoring teaches a book they will not be examined on. The work is quotation selection, argument structure and timed essay practice. Reading the text stays the pupil's job and no tutor should do it for them.

  • Starts by establishing the school's actual text list and component structure
  • Quotation banks built by the pupil, tested by the tutor
  • Timed essays marked against the real criteria and rewritten
  • Scheduled round mock season rather than against it

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What the IGCSE English Language components actually assess

Cambridge First Language English is assessed through reading and writing components, with some centres using a coursework route and some specifications carrying a separate speaking and listening endorsement. Confirm the exact arrangement on the live syllabus for your child's series and code, because the specifications are revised and the components a centre has entered differ. Then ask the school which ones your child is actually sitting, because that determines what practice is worth doing.

The reading components reward two things that fluency does not supply. Selection: picking the precise words that do the work, rather than quoting a whole sentence and hoping. Analysis: saying what the chosen words do to a reader and why, rather than restating what the passage says. A pupil who summarises accurately has demonstrated comprehension and earned comprehension marks, which are the smaller half of the paper. The analysis marks remain unclaimed.

The writing components reward form before flourish. Marks split between content and structure on one side and language accuracy on the other, which means a well-written answer in the wrong form loses a substantial share. A directed writing task naming an audience and a purpose is testing whether the pupil can produce that register: a speech that addresses listeners, a letter with a recipient in mind, an article with a readership. A fluent essay in response to any of those loses the form marks entirely.

This is why marked scripts matter more in English than in any other subject. A grade tells you nothing about which of four or five objectives is failing, and neither does a report comment about strong expression. Ask the school for the marked paper, look at where the annotations cluster, and the diagnosis is usually visible immediately. The table sets out the components and names the loss pattern attached to each.

Reading response: the sentence that earns the marks

  • Quote two or three words, not a whole sentence
  • Name the technique, then state the effect on a reader
  • Read the mark allocation before deciding how much to write
  • The same skill earns marks in History source questions and Geography extended answers

There is one sentence shape that reading analysis marks reward, and most pupils have never been shown it explicitly. It contains a short quotation, the name of what the writer is doing, and an account of the effect on a reader, joined so that each part supports the next. Three or four of those sentences, each about a different quotation, answers a five-mark analysis question completely. Most pupils instead write a paragraph about the passage and earn two.

The quotation has to be short. A pupil who quotes a full sentence has usually not identified which word is doing the work, and the mark scheme is interested in the word. 'Hammered' earns an analysis; 'the rain hammered against the window all night' earns a comprehension point and invites a restatement. Teaching a pupil to quote two or three words at a time is one of the fastest improvements available in the whole subject, and it takes a handful of sessions.

The effect has to be on a reader, not on the writer or the character. 'This shows the writer was angry' is a statement about the author's biography. 'This makes the rain sound violent and unrelenting, so the reader feels the night was hostile' is an effect. The distinction sounds like pedantry and it is worth several marks per question across a paper, which over a reading component is a grade.

None of this requires a child to read more books. It requires them to write the sentence, have it marked, see which clause earned the mark, and write it again. Four or five cycles is usually enough for the shape to stick, and the improvement shows up in History source questions and in Geography extended answers at the same time, because the underlying skill is identical. That makes reading analysis the highest-leverage English purchase available.

03

Directed writing: form, audience and purpose decide the mark

A directed writing task hands the candidate three constraints and marks them on all three. The form is named: a letter, a speech, an article, a report. The audience is named or implied: a head teacher, a council, a readership, a group of peers. The purpose is named: to persuade, to argue, to inform, to advise. A response that ignores any of the three has lost marks before its quality is considered.

The commonest failure is the fluent essay. A pupil who writes well produces an organised piece of argumentative prose whatever the task says, because that is the form school has rewarded for years. Asked for a speech, they write an essay with no address to listeners, no rhetorical turn, and no acknowledgement that someone is in the room. The language marks are earned; the form marks are not. The report then says 'writes fluently', and the grade stays where it was.

The fix is mechanical and quick. Four tasks in four different forms, written under timing, marked against the criteria, and rewritten with the form features inserted deliberately. A letter needs a recipient in mind and a reason for writing. A speech needs direct address and a pattern a listener can follow. An article needs a headline sensibility and a readership. A report needs headings or at least structural signalling and a recommendation.

The second common loss is planning, or the absence of it. A pupil who begins writing immediately produces a strong first paragraph and then loses shape, which costs structure marks across the piece. Five minutes spent agreeing the shape before writing is worth more than five extra minutes of writing, and it is a habit a tutor can impose far more easily than a parent can. The table sets out what each form requires explicitly.

04

Literature: start from the school's own text list

Set texts are chosen by the school and change over time, which makes generic literature tutoring close to worthless. A tutor who opens a conversation by discussing a novel before asking what your child is studying has told you how the sessions will go. The first question in any literature arrangement should be which texts, which components and which board, and all three answers come from the school rather than from a guess.

Once the list is known, the trainable elements are narrow and real. Quotation economy: a pupil who has memorised twelve short quotations they understand deeply will outperform one who has memorised forty they can only recite. Argument structure: an essay that answers the question in its first sentence and then proves it beats one that arrives at a view on the final page. Timed production: literature essays are written under pressure and the plan has to be fast.

Reading the text remains the pupil's work, and a tutor who summarises a play so the pupil need not read it has sold a shortcut that fails at the first unseen question. Where a component involves unseen poetry or prose, no amount of text knowledge substitutes for the analysis skill from the reading section of this page, which is why Language and Literature improve together and are sensibly tutored together when both are weak.

One Dubai-specific note. Pupils move schools mid-course within the emirate, and arriving in Year 11 with a different board's text list behind them is genuinely difficult. The honest response is a reconciliation plan: establish what is now examinable, triage which new texts can realistically be learned in the time available, and tell the family which cannot. That is a more useful conversation than promising to cover everything.

05

The marks an EAL pupil loses that are not language marks

  • Idiom and collocation errors cost accuracy marks and respond to correction of the pupil's own work
  • Register control is learned knowledge rather than instinct, and is teachable in four tasks
  • Cultural reference in unseen passages is a comprehension issue, not a vocabulary one
  • First Language English and English as a Second Language are different qualifications; check which is on the entry

A large proportion of pupils in Dubai's British-curriculum schools speak English as an additional language, often to a very high standard, and the marks they lose are frequently misattributed. A report that says 'needs to develop written expression' can mean several different things, and only one of them is a language problem. Separating them is the difference between a productive term and a frustrating one.

The first genuine language loss is idiom and collocation: a sentence that is grammatically correct and does not sound like something a first-language writer would produce. This costs accuracy marks and it improves slowly with reading and quickly with targeted correction of the pupil's own writing. The second is register control, which is partly linguistic and partly cultural: knowing how formal a letter to a head teacher should be is learned knowledge, not instinct.

The losses that are not language at all are larger. Cultural reference in unseen passages, where a pupil misreads a scene because the social setting is unfamiliar rather than because the vocabulary was hard. Assessment-objective ignorance, which affects first-language pupils just as much. And question-reading speed under timing, which is a processing issue that responds to practice rather than to vocabulary work. Each of these is diagnosable from a marked script and none is fixed by more grammar exercises.

There is also a qualification question worth settling. First Language English and English as a Second Language are different IGCSE qualifications with different ceilings and different reception at sixth form. A pupil capable of the first should not be entered for the second by default, and a pupil entered for the second should know how the Dubai sixth forms they are considering read it. That is a Year 10 conversation with the school, not a results-day discovery.

06

Cambridge codes, Pearson codes and what changes between them

English carries more specification codes than any other IGCSE subject, and the names are close enough to be confusing. Cambridge First Language English runs as 0500 and as 0990 on the 9-1 grade scale. Cambridge Literature in English runs as 0475 and 0992. English as a Second Language runs as 0510, 0511 and 0993 depending on the arrangement. Pearson Edexcel offers English Language A as 4EA1 and English Literature as 4ET1.

These are not interchangeable, and the practical consequence is that past-paper practice must match the entry. A pupil revising 0500 papers for a 4EA1 entry is practising a different paper structure with different question types. Ask the examinations officer for the code, in writing, because a prospectus that says 'IGCSE English' has told you nothing useful and a sibling's experience two years earlier may no longer apply.

The structural differences matter most in two places. Coursework availability: some arrangements allow a portfolio component and some are wholly examined, and revision strategy changes completely between them. And the anthology: Pearson's literature route uses a published anthology of poetry and prose alongside set texts, which is a defined body of material a pupil can be systematically prepared on, where Cambridge's arrangement differs.

For a pupil transferring between Dubai schools, the response is a short reconciliation rather than a long arrangement. Confirm the code and components, download the specification and past papers from the official board site rather than from any third party, and identify what is newly examinable and what has dropped away. Three or four sessions usually covers it, and it prevents a whole term's revision aimed at the wrong examination.

What a tutor may and may not do with a child's writing

  • Marking the pupil's own writing against the criteria: the core of legitimate work
  • Modelling on a different passage: teaching, and useful
  • Writing or editing sentences into the pupil's submission: never, at any price
  • Handing over mark schemes or study-guide files: no; the official page is linked instead

English is where the academic-honesty line gets tested hardest, because the product is text and text is easy to supply. A tutor may teach, model on a different example, question, and mark the pupil's own writing against the criteria. A tutor may not write a paragraph the pupil submits, rewrite a sentence into the pupil's draft, or edit a piece to completion. Where a coursework component exists, the mark has to represent the pupil's own work and the restriction tightens rather than relaxes.

The legitimate loop is simple and it is also the loop that works. The pupil writes. The tutor marks against the objectives and names what is missing without supplying it: 'this paragraph has no effect on a reader stated', not 'try writing it like this'. The pupil rewrites. The tutor marks again. A pupil who goes through that four times owns the skill. A pupil handed improved sentences owns nothing and will not be able to repeat it in June.

Modelling deserves a word, because it is legitimate and often confused with writing for a pupil. A tutor may demonstrate the technique on a completely different passage or question, so the pupil sees the shape and then produces their own. That is teaching. Demonstrating it on the pupil's own assessed task, in words they will submit, is not. The test is whether any sentence the tutor composed ends up in the submission.

One page ranking in this market sells completed Internal Assessments outright, at a published price. That is a malpractice trigger, and the exposure sits with the candidate. On the same principle, nobody should hand over past papers, mark schemes or set-text study guides as files: those belong to Cambridge, Pearson and their publishers, and the right behaviour is to link the official page. IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoE, Cambridge, Pearson or IB approval or partnership and makes no such claim.

08

The June series counted backwards for an essay subject

English behaves differently from maths in the final stretch, and the calendar should be read accordingly. Cambridge International runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level examinations in a June series and a November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. The February/March series is offered in India only. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November.

Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for the zone, warning that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after the wrong zone timetable was used. Ask the school which zone applies and work from the live official timetable. As a guide to the lead times involved, the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE November 2026 timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026 with results reaching students in January; November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026 and June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026.

Counted backwards, the English sequence has one unusual feature: the last eight weeks are genuinely productive, more so than in a content subject. Technique changes can still be installed in that window, because the pupil is not learning facts but changing how they answer. A pupil who adopts the quote-technique-effect habit in March will use it in June. A pupil learning twelve new set-text quotations in May is doing something much less reliable.

Where a coursework component is used, the deadlines sit much earlier and are set internally by the school rather than by the board. Those dates are the ones to ask about in September, because a missed internal deadline cannot be rescued by revision. And for a single-subject disappointment, the November series is a reasonable plan for English specifically, since the skills are already developed and the remaining work is technique under timing.

Coverage, scheduling and the first session

First Language English and Literature in English at both Cambridge and Pearson are well covered in this set, and a match is usually quick. Thinner briefs exist: a specific Pearson anthology poem set alongside an unusual text choice, or English as a Second Language at the oral-endorsement end. In a given week the honest answer may be that nobody suitable is free, and saying so is better than placing a generalist at the same rate.

Three outcomes are possible and a family should be told which applies. The brief is covered and a trial lesson is scheduled within days. The brief is covered by a specialist working into Gulf Standard Time from outside the UAE, which is disclosed rather than concealed behind a local-looking telephone number. Or the brief is not currently covered, in which case it is named rather than filled. Rates do not change because a tutor is based outside the UAE.

English scheduling has one requirement the other subjects do not. The pupil has to produce writing, which means a session scheduled when they are already exhausted produces a weaker sample than the pupil is capable of, and the diagnosis suffers accordingly. For families in JVT, JVC and Al Furjan, where pupils are often home by four, an early slot is realistic. For Remraam and Mudon households, a weekend morning is frequently better than a weekday evening.

The first session is free, is one session, and requires no card details. The useful thing to bring to it is a piece of your child's own marked writing - a mock answer, a directed writing task, a literature essay - rather than a description of the problem. Within the hour it should be possible to name which assessment objective is costing the most marks and what the first four weeks would consist of. If that is not possible, the match is wrong.

Where we tutor

The Jumeirah Village communities this page serves

A school in the Jumeirah Village corridor draws from a tight ring of apartment and villa communities. The useful local fact for an English plan is when a pupil is home and able to write for an hour, which is what these notes cover.

Jumeirah Village Triangle

Immediately around the school, so pupils are often home by four. That makes an early session realistic, which matters for a subject where the pupil has to produce writing rather than merely follow along.

Jumeirah Village Circle

Dense, apartment-heavy and the single largest source of enquiries in this corridor. Households here are frequently on a tighter education budget, which is where the AED 45-150 online band finds its market.

Al Furjan and Discovery Gardens

Short distances that behave badly at school-run time because of how few routes serve them. Pupils are generally home by 4.30pm, and a 5pm writing session works better than a later one for most of this age group.

Dubai Production City and Studio City

Apartment communities with long working days in the household, so sessions after 6pm are common. An essay rewrite is better scheduled at a weekend, when there is time for the pupil to write and the tutor to mark in the same sitting.

Sports City and Motor City

Well supplied with tuition centres, so group English classes at roughly AED 100-150 per pupil are easy to find. Group work covers text content; it cannot mark one child's own writing, which is where English grades actually move.

Remraam and Mudon

Further out, with journeys that turn an in-home arrangement into a ninety-minute commitment for a sixty-minute lesson. Removing the car removes the premium built into the published AED 180-500 in-home band.

The Gardens and Jebel Ali Village

Established, quieter communities with shorter school runs. Weekend morning sessions are popular here, which suits timed writing practice in a way a rushed weekday hour does not.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Establish the codes and the set text list

Ask the examinations officer which English codes your child is entered for - 0500 or 0990, 0475 or 0992, 4EA1 or 4ET1 - whether a coursework component applies, and what the literature text list is. Every one of those answers changes what practice is worth doing, and none of them can be guessed from the prospectus.

  2. 02

Get one marked script of each type

A reading answer and a piece of directed writing, both marked by the school. Look at where the annotations cluster rather than at the grade. A script with comments about explaining effects is an analysis problem; a script with comments about audience is a form problem, and they are different purchases.

  3. 03

    Name the failing objective

Sort the lost marks into selection, analysis, form and register, structure, and accuracy. Most pupils are losing heavily in one or two of those while performing well in the rest, which is exactly why the overall grade looks immovable. Aim the work at the largest column and leave the others alone.

  4. 04

    Write, mark, rewrite, repeat

Every session should produce or respond to a piece of the pupil's own writing. The loop is the pupil writes, the tutor marks against the criteria naming what is missing without supplying it, the pupil rewrites. Four cycles usually installs the habit, and installed habits survive into June.

  5. 05

Protect the slot the pupil can write in

English needs a pupil with energy because they have to produce text, not follow along. Pupils in JVT and Al Furjan are home early enough for a 5pm session; households in Remraam and Mudon often do better with a weekend morning. Fix the slot and keep it through mock season rather than renegotiating weekly.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Marks traced to objectives

The first output is a note saying which assessment objective is costing the marks: selection, analysis, form, structure or accuracy. That is what a stuck grade is made of, and it is information a report comment about strong expression cannot give you.

The school's own texts and tasks

Literature work starts from the text list your child's school actually chose and the components the centre entered. Generic literature tutoring teaches a book they will not be examined on, and every session spent that way is a session not spent on the examined material.

Writing produced, not discussed

Sessions are built round the pupil writing, being marked against the criteria, and rewriting. A pupil who has been through that loop four times owns the skill; a pupil handed improved sentences owns nothing and cannot reproduce it under timing in June.

Codes confirmed before practice starts

Cambridge 0500, 0990, 0475, 0992, 0510 and Pearson 4EA1 and 4ET1 are different papers with different question types. Practice has to match the code on the entry, and a prospectus saying 'IGCSE English' has not told you which one your child is sitting.

Delivery and coverage stated plainly

Lessons are one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are an India-only service. Where an unusual text or component combination has no specialist free, that is named rather than filled with a generalist.

The honesty line held, which matters most here

No sentence a tutor composed ends up in a submission. Modelling happens on a different passage; marking happens on the pupil's own work. Nobody supplies study-guide files or mark schemes, and no regulator or exam board has approved, accredited or partnered with IB Gram.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Why is my fluent Arcadia School child stuck on a grade 5 in English?+

Because IGCSE English does not award marks for writing well; it awards them against assessment objectives, and fluency satisfies only some of them. A pupil who summarises a passage accurately earns comprehension marks and leaves the analysis marks unclaimed, because analysis wants a short quotation, a named technique and an effect on a reader. In writing, marks split between form and register on one side and accuracy on the other, so a fluent essay written in answer to a speech task loses the form marks entirely. The report says 'strong expression' and the grade does not move.

What exactly does a reading analysis question want from a candidate?+

A sentence with three connected parts, repeated three or four times. A short quotation of two or three words, the name of what the writer is doing with them, and an account of the effect that has on a reader. Quoting a whole sentence usually means the pupil has not identified which word does the work, and the mark scheme is interested in the word. Stating an effect on the writer or the character rather than on a reader also loses the mark. Most pupils write a confident paragraph about the passage and earn two marks out of five.

How many marked essays does it take to shift an English grade?+

Three or four, if they are properly marked and then rewritten, which is usually far fewer than families expect. The loop matters more than the number: the pupil writes under timing, the work is marked against the published objectives with the missing element named rather than supplied, and the pupil rewrites it. Going through that four times installs a habit that survives into the examination. A term of discussion about texts and techniques, with no writing produced and marked, routinely changes nothing at all.

My child writes beautifully but keeps losing marks on directed writing. Why?+

Almost certainly form. A directed writing task names a form, an audience and a purpose, and marks all three. A pupil who writes well has been rewarded for organised argumentative prose for years, so when the task asks for a speech they produce an essay with no direct address, no rhetorical pattern and no acknowledgement that listeners exist. The language marks are earned and the form marks are not. The fix is four tasks in four different forms, written under timing, marked and rewritten with the form features inserted deliberately.

Should literature tutoring cover the texts our school actually chose?+

Yes, exclusively, and this is the single best test of a prospective literature tutor. Set texts are chosen by the school and change over time, so a tutor who starts discussing a novel before asking what your child is studying is about to teach a book they will not be examined on. The first questions should be which board, which components and which texts, and all three answers come from the school. Once the list is known, the trainable elements are quotation economy, argument structure and timed essay production.

Is First Language English the same qualification as English as a Second Language?+

No. They are separate IGCSE qualifications with different codes, different papers, different ceilings and different reception at sixth form. Cambridge First Language English runs as 0500 and 0990; English as a Second Language runs as 0510, 0511 and 0993 depending on the arrangement. A pupil capable of the first should not be entered for the second by default, and a pupil entered for the second should know how the Dubai sixth forms they are considering read it. That is a Year 10 conversation with the school rather than a results-day discovery.

What marks does an EAL pupil lose that are not actually language marks?+

More than most families realise. Cultural reference in unseen passages, where a scene is misread because the social setting is unfamiliar rather than because the vocabulary was difficult. Assessment-objective ignorance, which costs first-language pupils just as much. And question-reading speed under timing, which is a processing issue responding to practice rather than to vocabulary work. The genuine language losses are narrower: idiom and collocation, which improve through correction of the pupil's own writing, and register control, which is learned knowledge teachable in about four tasks.

Does more reading at home fix a stuck English grade?+

It helps slowly and it is rarely the bottleneck. A child who already reads widely and still scores 5 is not short of exposure; they are short of a technique nobody has named for them. Reading builds vocabulary, idiom and stamina, which pay over years. Marks move when the pupil writes an analysis sentence, has it marked, sees which clause earned the mark and writes it again. If reading were the mechanism, the fluent readers in every Dubai English class would already have top grades, and they do not.

What is the difference between Cambridge 0500 and Pearson Edexcel 4EA1?+

Different boards, different paper structures and different question types, so past-paper practice has to match the code on the entry. The structural differences bite in two places. Coursework availability varies, and a portfolio route needs a completely different revision strategy from a wholly examined one. And Pearson's literature route uses a published anthology alongside set texts, which is a defined body of material a pupil can be systematically prepared on. Ask the examinations officer for the code in writing; a prospectus saying 'IGCSE English' does not answer the question.

Can a tutor help with an English coursework piece?+

A tutor can teach the skills the piece needs, model the technique on a different example, and give feedback on the pupil's own draft naming what is missing. A tutor cannot write a paragraph, rewrite a sentence into the draft, or edit the piece to completion, and no price makes that acceptable. Where a component contributes to an assessed mark the restriction tightens, because the mark must represent the pupil's own work. The test is simple: no sentence a tutor composed should end up in the submission.

Is it worth starting English tutoring eight weeks before the June papers?+

For English, yes, more than for a content subject. Technique changes can still be installed in that window because the pupil is not learning facts but changing how they answer, and a pupil who adopts the quote-technique-effect habit in March will use it in June. What does not work in eight weeks is learning twelve new set-text quotations or covering a text properly for the first time. Where a coursework component is used the deadlines sit much earlier and are set internally by the school, so those dates need asking about in September.

Does improving English reading help in History and Geography too?+

Consistently, and this is the strongest argument for buying English analysis work first. A History source question asks the candidate to select, attribute, infer and evaluate, which is the same skill as a reading analysis question in different clothing. Geography extended answers reward structure and a stated judgement in the same way directed writing does. Pupils who install the analysis sentence in English usually show improvement in both within weeks, which means one purchase pays across three subjects rather than one.

Do you send English tutors to JVT, JVC or Al Furjan addresses?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; sending a tutor to a family's address is a service offered only in India. Tutoring for Dubai families is one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. For English this works well: the session is spent annotating the pupil's own marked writing on a shared screen and rewriting the paragraphs that lost marks. It also means the tutor is chosen for the board, the component and the set text list rather than for living within a drivable radius.

What should we bring to the first English session?+

A piece of your child's own marked writing rather than a description of the problem. A mock reading answer, a directed writing task, or a literature essay with the school's annotations on it is worth more than any amount of explanation, because it shows where the marks went. Bring the set text list and the specification code too if you have them. Within an hour it should be possible to name which assessment objective is costing the most marks and what the first four weeks would consist of. The first session is free, is one session, and needs no card details.

Bring one marked piece of your child's writing

The useful first step costs nothing. Ask the school for a marked reading answer and a marked piece of directed writing, and look at where the annotations cluster rather than at the grade. Comments about explaining effects point to an analysis problem; comments about audience point to a form problem, and the two are different purchases of different lengths. Ask the examinations officer for the specification codes and the set text list while you are there. A free trial lesson is one session with no card details required, and the right thing to bring is that marked script. Lessons are one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.
