IB DP English A Literature Tutor in Dubai

The price of an IB DP English A Literature tutor in Dubai is decided by how many of the set works your child has genuinely finished, not by the hourly rate on a website. A student who has read everything needs marking. A student four novels behind needs reading time and a plan, and paying a specialist to summarise books is the most expensive mistake available in this subject. This page prices both situations against published Dubai market bands, with sources and dates attached.

  • Costed from the reading list, because that is what actually drives the bill
  • Published AED bands attributed to the provider and the month read
  • One-to-one over live video; IB Gram runs no UAE home visits
  • A free diagnostic hour that will tell you to buy nothing if that is true

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

In Literature, the reading list is the budget

English A Literature is built on works, and the number is not small. Standard Level students study nine, Higher Level thirteen, drawn across literary forms, periods and places, with a required share of works read in translation. Every assessed component draws on that body of reading: the unseen passages in Paper 1, the comparative essay in Paper 2, the individual oral built on two works, and at Higher Level a further essay on one of them. Nothing in the course can be faked around a gap in the reading, which is why the first question about cost is not what a tutor charges but how much of the list is genuinely finished.

That changes the arithmetic from the usual tutoring conversation. A student who has read everything and is losing marks on analysis needs scored essays, and in Dubai that is a specialist purchase in the published range of roughly AED 200 to AED 450 an hour. A student who has skimmed four of the works needs three weeks with the books and a reading plan, which costs almost nothing, followed by a much shorter paid block. Families routinely buy the first when they needed the second, and the money disappears into sessions discussing books the student has not read.

The expensive error in the other direction is paying for summaries. Providers will happily supply a condensed version of a novel at a specialist hourly rate, and it feels like progress because the student can then say something about the text. The marks do not follow. Paper 2 rewards a comparison argued from detail, the individual oral rewards extracts the student can handle closely, and the Higher Level essay rewards a narrow line of inquiry into one work. All three are visibly thin when the underlying reading was secondhand, and examiners read a great many thin essays.

So this page costs the subject from the reading list outward. It sets out what each state of the list costs to fix and what the honest alternative is; it prices the Dubai market by what the hour contains rather than by the name of the provider; it names the month of the school year when specialists are actually available; and it says which purchases in this course return nothing. Where the answer is to buy books and time instead of hours, that is written down, because nobody paid by the hour has any incentive to tell you.

Delivery is one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, with the student's own writing shared on screen. IB Gram does not arrange home visits in the UAE; tutors travelling to a family's address is a service we run only in India. In this subject the online pool matters more than usual, because set works vary school to school and a family often needs somebody who has taught a specific translated text rather than somebody who lives within a twenty-minute drive of their villa.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Families budget across more than the two Diploma years, and a student's starting position in Literature is largely set before DP1 begins. Each programme below leaves a different gap, and the gaps cost different amounts to close.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

English A Literature runs at Higher and Standard Level across both years, assessed through unseen passage analysis, a comparative essay, an individual oral on two works and, at Higher Level, an essay on a single studied work. Works cannot be reused across components, which constrains the whole plan. The practical consequence for a budget is that a weak work is not just a weak work; it removes an option from the allocation puzzle.

Dubai schools choose their own set works within the IB framework, so two students in neighbouring schools can share nothing on their reading lists. Ask a prospective tutor which of your child's works they have actually taught before agreeing a rate, because that single answer changes the value of the hour more than the number attached to it.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP Language and Literature builds analysis of extracts and introduces comparison, and students arrive in DP1 used to being taught texts closely in class. The gap it leaves is reading stamina: MYP rarely requires a student to finish thirteen substantial works in two years. Families from continuum schools should budget for a reading plan in the first term rather than teaching hours.

Dubai has a large concentration of IB continuum schools, and the DP1 Literature cohort here is often half continuum students and half arrivals from British curriculum Year 11. The two halves need different purchases in the first term, and a provider selling both the same weekly hour is selling convenience rather than value.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE English Literature

IGCSE Literature covers three or four texts taught intensively, with extracts often available in the examination. Diploma Literature covers three times as many works with nothing in the room. Students make the transition on reading volume rather than on analytical ability, and the first term of DP1 is where that shows. Teaching hours help here; summaries do not.

With UK curriculum at 37 per cent of Dubai private-school enrolment, this is the commonest route into Diploma Literature in the emirate. A student who read three texts in Year 11 and is now facing thirteen needs a reading schedule more urgently than an essay tutor, and the schedule can be built in a single hour.

COREAges 16-19 · Both DP years

Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge

A Literature student registering an Extended Essay in English adds a fourth substantial text and 4,000 words of their own writing to the same two years. Theory of Knowledge draws on the same analytical habits. Both compete for the Literature budget, and one Group 1 specialist covering the essay craft across all three is the clearest package saving in the Diploma core.

In Dubai schools the internal deadlines for the core and the individual oral window frequently land in the same half-term, which produces the February spending spike families report. Mapping the clash in the first term turns an emergency block at compressed rates into a planned one.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What a package costs depends on which subjects are covered together, and some combinations genuinely share an hour while others do not. The notes below say which is which, from the perspective of a family trying to fund two subjects rather than one.

English A: Literature

HL and SL

Nine or thirteen works, two unseen passages in Paper 1, a comparative essay, an oral on two works and a Higher Level essay. The budget is driven by reading completeness first and by marked essay practice second; summaries of unread works are the one purchase that reliably returns nothing.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

The sibling Group 1 course, with non-literary texts and a smaller literary load. Costs behave differently: marking timed unseen responses dominates the budget rather than reading volume, so a family switching course mid-DP1 should expect the spending pattern to change shape.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

The TOK essay rewards a controlled claim with acknowledged limits, which is the same discipline as a Paper 2 comparison. A Literature specialist can usually cover both inside one booked hour, and families funding them separately are often paying twice for the same teaching.

The Extended Essay in English

Core

A 4,000-word research essay on a literary question, supervised by the school. Paid hours earn most at the research question stage and on one read of a near-final draft; the middle of the project is reading and writing the student must do themselves.

History

HL and SL

Shares source evaluation and essay architecture with Literature, and often shares a term's deadlines. Students losing marks for narrating rather than arguing will be doing it in both subjects, so one marking-led arrangement can cover the habit and a second tutor becomes avoidable.

Philosophy

HL and SL

Close reading of a prescribed text and tightly argued prose. A frequent pairing with Literature in Dubai IB schools, and one where the same tutor can realistically work across both, which is unusual and worth checking before funding two arrangements.

Psychology

HL and SL

Heavy on precise written explanation under time pressure. Literature students who write expansively tend to lose marks here for the same reason, and the correction transfers, so sequence the subjects rather than buying parallel weekly hours in both.

Global Politics

HL and SL

Essay-based with a heavy reading load, which competes directly with the Literature reading plan for the same evenings. Budgeting for both means scheduling reading blocks rather than adding sessions; two tutors cannot create reading time that the week does not contain.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Included for budgeting honesty: there is no shared hour here. Maths is a separate specialist and a separate line, generally at the upper end of the published Dubai bands during an examination year, and families should plan it as an addition rather than a substitution.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Literature support is bought in four shapes, and they are priced differently because they contain different amounts of reading, marking and teaching. All run one-to-one over live video with the student's own work on screen.

Reading plan plus checkpoint hours

A single hour to build a dated reading schedule across the remaining works, followed by short checkpoint sessions that test whether each work has been read closely enough to use in a component. The cheapest useful product in this course for a student behind on the list, because most of the work is unpaid and the student does it.

  • One planning hour producing a dated schedule
  • Short checkpoints after each work, not weekly sessions
  • Questions that expose secondhand reading quickly
  • No paid summaries of any text

Marked essay package

A fixed number of timed essays and unseen passage responses, each returned scored against the published descriptors with the specific weakness named. No teaching time beyond a short debrief. The right purchase for a student who has done the reading and is losing marks on argument or on close analysis.

  • Four, six or eight pieces marked and returned
  • Descriptor-level scores with written reasoning
  • Short online debrief per piece
  • No minimum term

Decision hours on the oral and the HL essay

One or two hours placed exactly where a decision is taken: which two works the individual oral will use, and what line of inquiry the Higher Level essay will pursue. Both decisions cap the mark if taken badly and are costly to reverse, so the hour is bought early and deliberately.

  • One hour at the point the choice is made
  • Allocation checked against the no-reuse constraint
  • Written record of the decision and its reasoning
  • One later read of the resulting draft

Set-work specialist block

Three to five hours with a tutor who has taught the specific works on your child's list, including the translated text. Used when a school's choices are unusual and generic support has not landed. Availability is the constraint rather than price, and we say when nobody suitable is free.

  • Matched on named works, not on subject alone
  • Three to five hours inside a fortnight
  • Focused on close textual handling of those works
  • Honest statement when no match exists

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What an IB DP English A Literature tutor in Dubai costs depends on the state of the reading list

Price any Literature support by asking one question first: how many of the set works has the student actually finished, closely enough to quote from? The answer sorts families into four situations with very different costs, and the table below prices each one. Three of the four are cheaper than the weekly-sessions arrangement most providers will propose, and one of them costs nothing at all.

This is the opposite of how the market sells. A provider quoting a rate per hour has no mechanism for telling a family that their problem is four unread novels and three weeks of evenings. The hourly conversation flattens every situation into the same product, and the student who most needs to be sent away to read is the one who will sit through the most sessions, because unread works generate an inexhaustible supply of things to discuss.

The AED figures in the table are arithmetic on published market bands rather than our quotation. The bands themselves come from providers' own pages and from Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table, read in October 2026: budget online platforms from roughly AED 45 to AED 150, qualified online subject tutors AED 150 to AED 300, IB specialists AED 200 to AED 450 and beyond, in-home visits AED 180 to AED 500, and premium named tutoring to AED 650.

The final row matters most in Dubai specifically, because set works differ between schools. A family whose child is studying an unusual translated work may find that no local tutor has taught it and that the useful specialist is somewhere else in the world. That is an availability problem rather than a pricing one, and it is the clearest practical argument for online delivery in this subject.

02

The arithmetic of catching up on nine or thirteen works

Literature families underestimate reading time by a consistent margin, so it is worth doing the sum in plain numbers. A substantial novel on a Diploma list runs to a few hundred pages; a play or a poetry collection is shorter but demands rereading. A student reading forty pages an evening, four evenings a week, covers a long novel in about a fortnight while also carrying five other subjects. Four unread works is therefore roughly two months of real evenings, not a weekend.

That number is why triage is sometimes the honest advice. A student in the second term of DP2 with half the list unread cannot finish it and should not try. The right move is to decide which works will carry the individual oral, which will carry the comparative essay, and which will be known adequately rather than well, then read in that order. Because no work may be used twice across components, the allocation has to be decided before the reading is sequenced, which is one hour of planning that saves a month of wasted effort.

None of that work needs a tutor beside the student while it happens, and this is the part the market obscures. The paid hours are worth spending at the start, on the plan, and at the checkpoints, where a few sharp questions reveal whether a work has been read or merely passed over. A student who cannot locate a scene, identify who speaks a line, or say what changes between two chapters has not finished the book, whatever they believe, and an hour spent discovering that is worth four spent discussing themes.

Works in translation add a specific burden that families rarely budget for. The required share of translated works means at least some of the list sits outside the student's own cultural and literary frame of reference, and the oral and comparative components both reward handling them with genuine understanding rather than respectful vagueness. Those works need more reading time, not more tutoring, and planning them early in DP1 is the difference between a translated text that carries a component and one that quietly cannot.

03

If you only buy one thing in English A Literature, buy this

For a student who has done the reading, the single highest-return purchase is a marked unseen passage response. Paper 1 presents poetry or prose nobody has prepared, and the only route to competence is write under time pressure, have the result scored accurately against the descriptors, correct one named fault, repeat. Four such responses across DP2 will usually do more than a term of weekly discussion, and they cost less in total at the same hourly rate.

For a student who has not done the reading, the single highest-return purchase is one hour of planning, and then nothing for a month. The plan sets the allocation of works to components, decides what will be read closely and what will be read adequately, and puts dates against each. Buying sessions before that hour is spent is buying company for a student who needs solitude and a book, which is why this page says so explicitly rather than leaving it to be discovered.

There are two decision hours worth protecting in any budget. The first is the choice of the two works for the individual oral, which has to respect the constraint that a work used in one component cannot be reused in another; a careless choice here removes the student's strongest text from the component where it would have earned most. The second, at Higher Level, is the line of inquiry for the essay, which caps the mark the moment it is set too broadly and is expensive to change once a draft exists.

What returns nothing, reliably, is paid summary. A tutor who recounts a novel the student has not read produces a session the student enjoys and an essay an examiner will see through in a paragraph. The marks in this course come from close handling of text: a quotation deployed accurately, a shift in a character's language noticed, a form used as evidence rather than mentioned. None of that survives secondhand reading, and no rate per hour changes it.

04

What the Dubai market charges, sorted by what the hour contains

Comparing providers by their hourly rate tells a family almost nothing, because the same number buys very different contents. The table below reorganises the published Dubai bands around what is actually delivered in the hour, which is the comparison a parent can act on. Every figure is a provider's own published rate or a band from Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table, read in October 2026, and none of them is our price.

Three of the six providers researched for this market publish no rate at all, and two of the three that do quote in US dollars rather than dirhams. One competitor's own frequently-asked-questions section raises the price question and declines to answer it. That absence is the reason a Dubai parent's first quote so often becomes their reference point for every subsequent judgement, and it is why these bands are set out here with their sources.

Read the rows as products rather than as tiers of quality. A reading-plan hour and a marked unseen response are both legitimate purchases, they suit different students, and a family who knows which they need can buy it at the appropriate band instead of defaulting to the most expensive option on offer. The row that deserves the most scepticism is the one in the middle: a mid-market rate with marking charged separately, which is how a budget quietly doubles.

Monthly packages circulate in this market too and should be unpacked before comparison. Figures seen include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions, while Bestimate estimates roughly AED 240 to AED 600 a month at the budget end, AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year work. Divide by the hours before you compare; the implied rate is frequently above the headline.

Translated works: the line nobody budgets for

The requirement to study works in translation is one of the defining features of Diploma Literature and one of the least discussed in this market. It puts at least some of a student's reading outside the literary tradition they have grown up with, often in a form, period or convention they have never met. For a Dubai cohort drawn from twenty nationalities that cuts in unexpected directions: the translated text is unfamiliar to almost everyone in the room, including, sometimes, the teacher who chose it.

The cost consequence is specific. A translated work usually needs more reading time than an equivalent English-language text, because the student is also acquiring context. It also needs a tutor who has taught that work, not merely a tutor who has taught Literature, and that is where the local-supply problem bites. A family in Dubai whose school has set a less commonly taught translated novel may find that nobody within driving distance has handled it, and a generalist session on it is worth very little.

This is the clearest case in the subject for widening the pool rather than widening the budget. Online delivery means a family selects on whether the tutor has taught the named work, which is a question with a factual answer, instead of selecting on who is nearby and hoping. It is also the reason this page asks families to put the set works in the first message: matching on the works takes longer than matching on the subject, and the answer is sometimes that nobody suitable is free.

When the honest answer is no match, there are two reasonable fallbacks and one bad one. The reasonable ones are to buy craft rather than content, working on comparison and close analysis using works the tutor does know and transferring the method, or to wait for a specialist and spend the interval reading. The bad one is to pay specialist rates for a tutor reading the novel alongside the student, which happens in this market and which a family can detect by asking one direct question before booking.

06

The cheapest months to book a Literature specialist in Dubai

Hourly rates in this market do not formally rise before the examination session, but availability collapses, and the effect on a family's bill is the same. Specialists fill their weekly slots during the first term, so a block sought in February is competing for compressed hours at unsocial times, and the choice narrows to whoever is left. The calendar below sets out what is happening in a Dubai school year and what it does to both supply and the sensible purchase.

Two features of the UAE calendar shape this more than families expect. Ramadan shortens school days and shifts household routines, which moves sessions to post-Iftar slots and compresses the week; good tutors will accommodate it, but the slots go early. And the long summer break, during which a large share of Dubai families travel for several weeks, is both the best reading window in the year and the period when a weekly in-person arrangement would collapse entirely. Online delivery survives it, which is a practical argument rather than a marketing one.

Exam-session dates themselves are worth treating carefully. This page does not publish a specific IB examination or results date, because the IB's own site cannot be verified by automated checking and an unconfirmed date on a page like this is worth less than nothing to a family planning around it. UAE IB schools sit the May session; confirm the exact windows and your school's internal deadlines with the DP coordinator, who holds the current timetable.

Cambridge and Pearson dates, by contrast, are published and sourced, and they illustrate why booking early matters in any system. Both boards run two series a year in this region: Cambridge examines in June and November, and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in May/June and November, with the November 2026 final timetable ending 19 November 2026. Entries for a series close months before its first paper, on a date the centre is told rather than one a family should assume, and that gap is the whole point — by the time a timetable feels urgent, the administrative decisions have already been made. Tutor availability follows the same curve. The specialists who can take an unseen-poetry student are booked out in the term before a series, not during it.

Four things not to fund, and one claim to refuse

Past papers, mark schemes, syllabus documents, subject guides and grade-boundary tables are not a tutor's to sell. They belong to the IB, to Cambridge or to Pearson, and a legitimate provider references them and links to the official source rather than supplying copies as downloads. A bundle of copied material presented as a resource pack is somebody else's copyright exposure sold at a margin, and unreleased material carries a malpractice risk for the student too.

Nor should a family fund an accreditation claim. A provider that places the name of a regulator or an examination board next to words such as approval, accreditation or authorisation should be asked for the permit number, and a provider using the phrase loosely has told you something about their other claims. The specific permit for a training institute with premises in Dubai is an Educational Services Permit, which is not the same thing as an individual tutor's status. IB Gram holds no such permit and does not imply one.

The third thing not to fund is a statistic. Satisfaction percentages, average score claims and self-published star ratings circulate in this market without a sample size, a date or a method behind any of them; two researched competitors display conflicting review totals on the same page. A premium justified by a number that cannot be checked is a premium paid for the number. The fourth is a guarantee: nobody can promise a grade in a subject assessed externally on unseen passages, and a refund promise tied to an outcome deserves more scepticism, not less.

The claim to refuse outright is an offer to supply finished work. Providers in this market do sell completed coursework at a price that looks competitive against a term of honest sessions. Under IB academic-honesty rules the consequence of submitting work that is not the student's own falls on the student, up to the loss of the Diploma. A tutor reads, marks, questions, models and records; every word a school uploads must be the student's own. That boundary is a genuine differentiator here and it is not negotiable at any rate.

08

When nobody has taught your school's set works, and who is permitted to teach at all

Because Dubai schools choose their own works, matching a Literature tutor is a search for a person rather than a product, and sometimes the search fails. We say so when it does. The alternatives offered are a different time slot with a specialist who has taught the works, a craft-focused block using texts the tutor knows well with the method transferred, or a wait with a reading plan in the meantime. What we will not do is place a generalist, call them a specialist in your child's set works, and charge the specialist band.

That transparency is unusual in this market and it is the reason the delivery format matters. All Dubai sessions run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not arrange home visits in the UAE, because tutors travelling to a family's address is a service we offer only in India. The gain is not merely that no part of the hour is spent on Sheikh Zayed Road; it is that the question a Literature family needs to ask — have you taught this translated work? — can be answered yes by somebody, somewhere, rather than no by everybody within twenty minutes.

Before paying anyone in this market, know the permit position. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated: the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers categories including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. MoHRE's own service page for it lists no fees and a two-working-day completion time. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule has been published, so treat any amount quoted to you as unverified.

One final rule worth knowing before a conversation at the school gate. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar private and charter school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct carries a comparable restriction. Hiring your child's own Literature teacher privately is therefore an arrangement to decline rather than a shortcut to negotiate — and an external reader is more useful anyway, because they encounter the essay as an unknown examiner will rather than as the person who taught the lesson behind it.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Where a family lives in Dubai affects what they are quoted, mostly through travel in in-home arrangements and through the thinness of the local Group 1 pool. These notes record the cost effect rather than describing the area.

Palm Jumeirah

Long single-access drives and heavy traffic at the trunk mean visiting tutors price the journey generously, and quotes here sit near the top of the published in-home band. The saving from online delivery is correspondingly larger than almost anywhere else in the city.

Umm Suqeim

Close to the oldest school cluster and well supplied with primary and IGCSE tutors. Diploma Literature specialists are a different matter, and families here regularly discover that proximity buys a generalist rather than somebody who has taught their set works.

Jumeirah Village Circle

Dense, fast-growing and some distance from the established school belt. In-home quotes include a real drive, and the same budget buys noticeably more marked written work online. Evening slots after seven are the easiest to fill at a stable rate.

Sobha Hartland and Al Jaddaf

Newer schools with strong IB provision and a young family profile. Spending here tends to start early in DP1, which is also when it works best, because reading plans and transition habits cost less to fix than second-year essay problems.

Nad Al Sheba

Villa communities with longer school runs and a strong extracurricular culture competing for the same evenings. The practical constraint on a Literature plan here is reading time rather than session availability, and no hourly rate solves that.

The Springs and The Meadows

Established family communities with several large schools within reach. A common pattern is two subjects funded at once, where the useful saving is a shared Group 1 and Theory of Knowledge hour rather than a discount on the headline rate.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

Large schools and long commutes, so sessions sit late and compress into a narrow window. Specialists for that window fill early in the year, which is why booking a Literature block in October costs less than finding one in March.

Al Warqa and Mirdif

Big catchments and heavy school-run traffic. In-home arrangements lose a visible share of the hour to the journey, and families comparing two quotes for the same marked essay usually move the work online after the first invoice.

A newer cluster of IB and British schools with strong Group 1 provision and varied set works. Families here often need a tutor who has taught a specific translated text, which is a search for a person rather than for a price, and the online pool is what makes it possible.

  • North London Collegiate School Dubai
  • Hartland International School
  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai
  • Repton School Dubai

Emirates Hills, The Meadows and The Greens

Established schools with large Diploma cohorts and detailed written feedback. The most efficient purchase in this cluster is usually a single marked second-opinion read rather than a weekly block, because the school is already supplying teaching of a decent standard.

  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills
  • Emirates International School Meadows
  • Regent International School
  • Dubai British School Emirates Hills

Jumeirah Village Circle, Al Furjan and Motor City

Fast-growing communities with newer schools and Literature classes that can be small. A small cohort means less peer pressure to keep up with the reading, which is where the budget in this cluster most often leaks: paid hours spent covering books nobody finished.

  • Sunmarke School
  • JSS International School
  • GEMS Metropole School
  • The Arbor School

Schools are named as context for the Dubai IB ecosystem that students we support attend; no affiliation, endorsement or partnership with any school or school group is implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the set works, not just the subject

List the works your child is studying, including the translated texts, the level, and roughly how many have been finished. That list determines both the price and whether a match exists at all, and it is the single most useful thing a Dubai Literature family can send in a first message.

  2. 02

    Take the free diagnostic hour

One hour, online, one-to-one, no card required. A piece of existing writing is marked against the published descriptors and the reading position is tested with direct questions. You receive a written plan: works to read in what order, hours needed, and what those hours would cost at a stated rate.

  3. 03

Read before you buy, if that is the finding

For a student behind on the list the plan will say to spend three to eight weeks reading with checkpoints rather than booking weekly sessions. That is the honest recommendation and the cheap one. Checkpoint hours are booked individually, and nothing continues on a subscription basis.

  4. 04

Buy marking by the piece once the reading holds

Marked essays and unseen passage responses are bought as a defined number rather than as a standing weekly hour. Each comes back scored against every descriptor with one named fault to correct, and the dated scores accumulate into a record a parent can read without being able to mark Literature.

  5. 05

Protect the two decision hours, then review

One hour on the individual oral works and the allocation constraint, one on the Higher Level line of inquiry, both booked when the decision is live rather than after a draft exists. At the end of the block the record is read, and the arrangement either continues against named components or stops.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Priced from the reading list

The first question here is how much of the list is genuinely finished, because that decides the cost far more than any hourly rate. Three of the four situations it produces are cheaper than the weekly arrangement most providers propose, and one of them is free. No provider paid by the hour has any reason to tell you that.

We will tell you to read instead

A student four novels behind needs evenings with the books, not sessions discussing them. The diagnostic hour says so in writing, with dates. Families who follow it spend less in total and arrive at DP2 able to quote from the works, which is what the components actually reward.

Matched on the named works

Dubai schools choose their own set works, including the translated texts, so we match on the specific titles rather than on the subject. When nobody suitable is free we say so and offer a craft block or a wait, instead of placing a generalist at the specialist band and hoping the difference goes unnoticed.

Bands published with their sources

Every AED figure names the provider and the month it was read, including the in-home bands we do not operate in. Three of the six researched competitors publish no price and two quote in dollars, so a Dubai parent is usually comparing one unexplained number against nothing.

Marking is written down and dated

Each piece returns scored against every descriptor with the specific fault named, and the scores build a record. That record is how a family judges whether the arrangement works, and it is also what makes stopping an easy decision rather than an awkward conversation.

The honesty line, stated before you pay

Finished coursework is sold in this market, and under IB rules the consequence of submitting it falls on the student. A tutor here reads, marks, questions, models and records, and nothing else. Copies of past papers, mark schemes and subject guides are referenced and linked, never supplied.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What should a Dubai family expect to pay for English A Literature support?+

It depends almost entirely on the reading position rather than on a list price. For a student who has read the works and loses marks on analysis, four to eight marked pieces at the published IB specialist band of roughly AED 200 to AED 450 an hour is the purchase that pays. For a student three or four works behind, one or two planning and checkpoint hours plus several weeks of unpaid reading is both cheaper and more effective. Those bands are providers' own published figures and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table, read in October 2026, not our prices.

My child has not finished four of the set works. What does catching up cost?+

Mostly time rather than money. Four substantial works is roughly two months of real evenings for a student carrying five other subjects, and no hourly rate compresses that. What is worth paying for is one planning hour that sequences the reading against the component allocation, then short checkpoint sessions that test whether each work has genuinely been read. At mid-market Dubai rates that is a small defined cost. Paying a specialist to discuss books the student has not opened is the expensive version of the same problem.

Is it better value to buy reading support or essay marking?+

Buy in that order, and only as far as you need. Reading support is cheap because most of the work is unpaid: a plan, a schedule and a few hard questions at checkpoints. Essay marking is expensive because scoring a timed response against every descriptor takes real tutor time, and it is the thing that moves marks once the reading holds. Buying marking first for a student who has not read the works produces scored essays that are thin for a reason marking cannot fix.

Do works in translation need extra paid hours?+

They need extra reading time, which is unpaid, and a tutor who has actually taught the specific text, which is a matching problem rather than a pricing one. A translated work sits outside most students' literary frame of reference and often outside the local tutor pool's experience too, so a Dubai family whose school has set a less commonly taught novel may find nobody nearby has handled it. Ask any prospective tutor directly whether they have taught that title; paying specialist rates for somebody reading it alongside your child is a poor trade.

Why is unseen poetry the most expensive hour in this course?+

Because nothing about it can be prepared and the only route to competence is repeated marked practice. Paper 1 hands a student a passage nobody has taught them, and the descriptors reward close handling of specific choices rather than general appreciation. That means the useful hour contains an accurately scored response and a named fault to correct, which takes a calibrated marker and real time. A conversation about poetry is pleasant and cheap; a scored response is neither, and it is what the grade answers to.

Is a cheaper tutor who has not read our school's set works any use?+

For craft, sometimes. For content, no. A good Group 1 tutor can teach comparison, close analysis and essay architecture using texts they know well, and the method transfers, which is a legitimate purchase at a mid-market rate. What does not work is a session on a specific novel the tutor has not read, at any price, because the detail that earns marks is exactly what they cannot supply. Decide which of the two you are buying before agreeing a rate, and ask the question plainly.

When in the Dubai school year is a Literature specialist easiest to book?+

The first term of DP1 and the long summer break. Rates do not formally rise before the May session, but specialists fill their weekly slots during the first term, so a block sought in the second term of DP2 competes for compressed and unsocial hours and the choice narrows to whoever is left. Ramadan slots and holiday intensives also go early. Booking the marking block in the first term of DP2 is both cheaper in practice and far more likely to exist when it is needed.

Can one tutor cover Literature and the Extended Essay without a second fee?+

Frequently yes, and it is the clearest saving available to a Group 1 family. A Literature specialist can work on the Extended Essay research question and on the Theory of Knowledge essay inside the same booked hour, because all three reward a controlled claim supported by evidence with its limits acknowledged. Confirm it before booking rather than assuming, and keep the records separate: the Extended Essay has its own supervision arrangements at the school and its own reflection requirements.

What is the smallest sensible purchase in English A Literature?+

One marked read of an existing essay, or one planning hour, depending on the reading position. Both cost a single hour at the relevant published band and both answer the question a family actually has, which is whether paid support is needed at all and what it should target. Several families buy one, act on the written output, and never book anything else. That is a good outcome and the diagnostic hour is designed to make it possible rather than to make it awkward.

Should we pay someone to summarise the novels?+

No. It is the one purchase in this course that reliably returns nothing. The marks come from close handling of text: an accurate quotation, a noticed shift in a character's language, form used as evidence rather than mentioned. A student working from a summary can produce a confident paragraph and an examiner can see through it in a sentence, because the detail is not there. Buy the book and the three weeks. Providers will sell the summary happily, which is precisely why it needs saying here.

Does Higher Level Literature cost more to support than Standard Level?+

Usually, for two structural reasons rather than because of a different rate. Higher Level requires thirteen works rather than nine, which lengthens the reading and therefore the catch-up risk, and it adds a further essay on a single studied work with its own line of inquiry to settle. In practice that is two or three more paid hours across the two years, placed at the decision points. Confirm the current requirements with your school's DP coordinator, since structural details are set by the subject guide in force for your child's session.

How do we check that a quoted rate includes marked written work?+

Ask in writing for three specifics: whether a timed response will be returned annotated, whether it will carry a score against each published descriptor, and whether the marking happens before the session or inside the paid hour. A provider who marks during the session is charging you to read your child's essay. One who charges marking as an extra should be asked for the combined figure, because a mid-market hourly rate plus a separate marking fee frequently lands above the specialist band it looked cheaper than.

What happens to our fee if the tutor turns out to be the wrong match?+

Raise it immediately rather than at the end of a block, and expect a rematch rather than an argument. A mismatch in this subject is usually specific and identifiable: the tutor has not taught the set works, or marks generously without descriptor-level reasoning, or spends the hour on texts rather than on the student's writing. Any arrangement should let a family stop after a single session, and a provider who requires a long commitment before the first marked piece comes back is asking for trust they have not yet earned.

Is a premium examiner-level rate worth it for one essay?+

It can be, for a single high-stakes component read once, and it is worth knowing what you are buying. We do not describe tutors as IB or Cambridge examiners unless current examiner status can be evidenced, and examiner experience should never be presented as access to marking, grade boundaries or paper content. What a strong single read buys is calibration: a judgement about where a piece sits against the descriptors from somebody who has applied them many times. Published premium rates in this market reach AED 650 an hour, per BartyED's own page.

Does IB Gram arrange a Literature tutor who comes to our villa in Dubai?+

No. IB Gram runs no home visits anywhere in the UAE; tutors travelling to a family's address is a service we offer only in India. Dubai Literature support is delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, with the student's own essay on screen while it is annotated. In this subject that widens the choice in the way that matters: a family can look for somebody who has taught their child's specific translated work rather than for somebody who can reach their community before five.

Count the unread works first

Before comparing quotes for English A Literature in Dubai, count how many of the set works your child can genuinely quote from. That number, more than any hourly rate, decides what this costs. Send the list of works, the level and an honest count, and take the free diagnostic hour: one piece of writing marked against the published descriptors, the reading position tested with direct questions, and a written plan giving the order to read in, the hours needed and what they would cost at a stated rate. If the plan says read for a month and book nothing, that is the plan.
