IB DP Biology SL Online Tutor in Dubai

Families searching for an IB DP Biology SL online tutor in Dubai are usually not looking for a future biologist. They have a student carrying Biology as one of three Standard Levels, often as the Group 4 requirement, who can recite definitions and still comes home with a 4. That gap has a specific cause: more than half the marks in a Diploma science paper are not awarded for recall. This page sets out what the papers test instead, and where the easiest marks are currently being given away.

  • Built around application and analysis, not definition lists
  • Biological drawing, annotation and scale marks covered explicitly

Why a student who knows the biology still scores a 4

The most frequent description Dubai parents give of a Standard Level Biology problem is that their child knows the material. Quite often they are right. The student can define osmosis, name the stages of mitosis, and explain what an enzyme does. Then the paper arrives, and the questions are about an unfamiliar organism, a graph nobody has seen, and a method the student has to criticise. Knowledge is necessary and it is not sufficient, and a page that pretends otherwise is not going to help.

Diploma science papers are written against assessment objectives that go well beyond recall: knowing things, applying them to new situations, analysing and evaluating evidence, and demonstrating the skills of investigation. Paper 1 at Standard Level is ninety minutes and 36% of the grade, with a multiple-choice section and a data-based section. Paper 2 is also ninety minutes and 44%, built from short answers and extended responses. The investigation is 20% and is marked out of 24. Across all of it, the proportion of marks available for simply stating something is much smaller than students assume.

This is why defining everything correctly produces a 4. The definition marks are banked, the application marks are partly earned, and the analysis and evaluation marks are largely missed, because nobody has ever shown the student what an answer to one of those questions looks like. The content is not where the hours should go. The question types are.

There is a second, cheaper problem sitting alongside it, and Biology is unusual in having it: drawing marks. Labelled diagrams, annotated drawings, magnification and scale calculations, interpreting a micrograph. These are marks awarded for a technique nobody practises, routinely lost for things as small as drawing with a sketchy double line or writing a label where an annotation was required. Fixing that is one session, and it shows up on the next assessment.

Everything here runs online, one student at a time, over live video, in Gulf Standard Time slots arranged around your child's school week. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we provide only in India. A shared screen is the right surface for marking a drawing and for working a data question with the figure in front of both people, which is the bulk of what these sessions do.

The page also sets out the DP2 calendar by who controls each deadline, because most of the dates that govern a Dubai Biology student's year are set by their own school rather than by the IB. The first lesson is free, lasts 45 minutes, covers one subject and asks for no card details. Every AED figure quoted below is a market rate with its source and the month it was read.

At a glance

  • Paper 1 is 36% of the grade, Paper 2 is 44%, the investigation is 20%
  • Both Standard Level papers run for ninety minutes
  • Recall marks are a minority of the total across the whole course
  • Drawing, annotation and scale marks are lost to technique, not knowledge
  • Most DP2 deadlines are set by your school, not by the IB

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Standard Level Biology turns up in three different International Baccalaureate contexts in Dubai, and the student's situation changes the advice more than the content does. The syllabus is the same in each; the amount of time available and the reason for taking it are not.

DPAges 16-19 · Three Standard Levels of six subjects

Diploma Programme

Most Standard Level Biology students in Dubai are full Diploma candidates taking it as their Group 4 subject, with their Higher Levels elsewhere. The Diploma is awarded on a points total across six subjects plus the core, with a published minimum and a set of additional conditions, so a Standard Level grade matters to the total without being the thing a university is looking at. That changes how many hours it deserves.

Dubai had 387,441 private school students across 227 private schools in 2024-25, with International Baccalaureate candidates at 7% of enrolment, and seven more schools were approved for the 2026-27 intake. Standard Level Biology sets in these schools are often the largest science groups on the timetable, which is the practical reason an individual student's drawing technique has never been corrected.

CPAges 16-19 · Career pathway with DP courses

Career-related Programme

Career-related Programme students take at least two Diploma Programme courses alongside their career-related study, the reflective project and the personal and professional skills course. Standard Level Biology is a common choice for health and sports pathways. The examination is identical to the one a full Diploma candidate sits, including the investigation and its four criteria, which is not always obvious from the way the pathway is described.

The number of Dubai schools running the Career-related Programme is small but increasing. Its students are the easiest in any school to under-serve, because revision sessions, mock timetables and study groups are built for the full Diploma cohort. A Career-related Biology candidate is frequently the only student in their band sitting that paper.

MYPAges 11-16 · The year before DP1

Middle Years Programme

Middle Years Sciences is integrated and criterion-assessed, and its investigations reward process. A student arriving in Standard Level Biology has usually had more practice designing an experiment than answering a question about somebody else's. The two things to build before DP1 begins are reading a question for what it asks rather than what it is about, and producing precise definitions from memory rather than in context.

Because Middle Years criterion grades look reassuring, Dubai families rarely test either skill before the Diploma starts. A short block in the final Middle Years term aimed at question analysis is more useful than content preview, and it costs less than the remediation it prevents in the first term of DP1.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Standard Level Biology rarely arrives alone in a request. The grid below shows the subjects Dubai families most commonly ask about alongside it, and what the real request usually turns out to be once the first session has happened.

Biology

SL and HL

Themes A to D at common-core depth: unity and diversity, form and function, interaction and interdependence, continuity and change. Sessions concentrate on application and analysis questions, on drawing and annotation marks, and on the data-based section of Paper 1 where Standard Level candidates lose most.

Chemistry

SL and HL

Taken alongside Biology by students keeping a health pathway open. The usual request is quantitative rather than conceptual, since the moles and concentration arithmetic is what blocks progress, and a session shaped like maths often helps the chemistry grade more than one shaped like chemistry.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science

SL and HL

Overlaps heavily with Biology physiology and uses the same assessment model, including the identical investigation criteria. Dubai students often take both, and anything learned about annotated diagrams or evaluating a method counts in both subjects without extra work.

Psychology

SL and HL

A frequent third Standard Level. Shares the skill of evaluating a study rather than reciting it, and the research-methods content supports the investigation's data analysis criterion. Students who find evaluation hard in one subject almost always find it hard in both.

Geography

SL and HL

Pairs well with Biology because both reward reading a figure and writing an evaluated conclusion from it. Where a Biology data question is failing, a Geography resource-interpretation question usually is too, and one block of sessions can address both.

Business Management

SL and HL

Common in Dubai timetables as a Standard Level alongside Biology. Its internal assessment matures in the same DP2 window as the Biology investigation, so families ask for both coursework calendars side by side before allocating any hours.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

SL and HL

The usual maths route for a Standard Level Biology student. Its statistics and graph work map directly onto Paper 1B, which is the section most Biology students lose marks in, so the two subjects are better planned together than separately.

Environmental Systems and Societies

SL and HL

Shares ecology content and the diversity index with Biology theme C, and counts in Group 3 or Group 4. Students taking both need help distinguishing the two subjects' command terms, since the systems paper rewards weighing competing perspectives.

Arabic B

SL and HL

Requested by Diploma students whose week already contains the mandatory UAE subjects. Where Arabic and Biology are both being supported, the scheduling question comes first, because the fixed mandatory lessons determine which evenings are genuinely free.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Standard Level Biology support splits into three patterns, and which one applies is usually clear from a single sentence about what goes wrong. All three run one to one over live video, and each produces something marked that you can look at.

Assessment-objective drill

A block of four to six sessions working only on the question types that are not recall: apply this to an unfamiliar organism, analyse this figure, evaluate this method. Each session takes one type, shows a worked answer, then has the student produce three of their own against the mark scheme. It is the block that moves a 4 to a 5 most reliably.

  • One question type per session, with a worked example first
  • Three student attempts marked against the scheme in session
  • Deliberate use of unfamiliar contexts, never revisited examples
  • A short list of phrases that signal evaluation to an examiner

Drawing and data-skills block

Two or three sessions on the technique marks: biological drawings with single clean lines and proportion, the difference between a label and an annotation, magnification and scale bar calculations, and reading a micrograph. These marks appear in both papers and in the investigation, and almost no student has been taught them deliberately.

  • Drawings submitted by photograph and marked on screen
  • Annotation practised as a sentence, not a word
  • Magnification and scale worked until the method is automatic
  • Micrograph interpretation using unfamiliar images each time

Pre-assessment triage sessions

Booked when a school assessment or mock is close and there is not time to fix everything. The session's whole purpose is to decide what to do and what to abandon. Triage is an unglamorous service and a genuinely useful one, because the alternative is a student revising everything badly for three weeks.

  • Starts from the assessment's stated content and the time left
  • An explicit list of topics to leave alone
  • Highest-yield question types practised first
  • One timed section sat so pacing is known before the day

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What a Standard Level Biology paper is actually testing

The Diploma science guides set out assessment objectives that cover more than knowledge: demonstrating what you know, understanding and applying it in new situations, analysing and evaluating evidence, and demonstrating the skills needed to carry out an investigation. A student who treats the course as a body of facts to be memorised is preparing for one of those four and hoping the others look after themselves.

In practice the examination is built the other way round. A multiple-choice item usually requires a fact to be applied rather than merely recalled. A data-based question gives an unfamiliar figure and asks what it supports. A Paper 2 extended response asks for a mechanism in sequence, or for a comparison, or for a judgement on whether the evidence is good enough. Very few marks are available for the definition alone.

This is the single most useful thing a parent can understand before buying tutoring hours, because it determines what the hours should contain. If your child's school report says their knowledge is sound but their examination performance is weak, the answer is not revision in the usual sense. It is practice at the three objectives nobody has drilled: application, analysis, evaluation.

The table maps each objective to where it dominates and how it is practised, because the practice method differs for each. Application needs unfamiliar contexts. Analysis needs figures the student has not seen. Evaluation needs somebody else's flawed method to criticise. None of those can be generated by rereading a textbook, which is why the subject resists the revision style that works for a vocabulary list.

02

The question types in a Standard Level Biology paper, one by one

Students revise content and sit question types, and the mismatch is where a term of effort disappears. There are not many types. Once a student can name the type in front of them and say what form the answer takes, their mark rises without any new biology being learned. That is an uncomfortable fact for anyone selling content teaching, and it is consistently what marked Dubai scripts show.

The hardest type for Standard Level candidates is the comparison. Asked to distinguish between two structures or processes, students write a paragraph about the first and a paragraph about the second. Mark schemes award for linked differences, stated on the same axis: this one does X whereas that one does Y. The same content, reorganised, scores twice as much, and the reorganisation takes one session to teach.

The second hardest is evaluation. Asked whether a method supports a conclusion, students either accept it or list every limitation they can think of. Neither scores well. The mark scheme wants the limitations that actually matter for the conclusion drawn, ranked, with a statement about what could still be claimed. Students find this easier once they see that it is a judgement rather than a list, and it is the skill that most reliably separates a 5 from a 6.

The table below sets out the types, what each one needs, and the error that recurs. It is worth keeping beside a past paper: the student names the type before writing anything, which slows the first thirty seconds of each answer and saves several marks across the paper.

Drawings, labels and scale: the marks Standard Level candidates hand back

  • Single clean lines, correct proportion, no shading
  • A label names; an annotation makes a statement about the structure
  • Annotations are written as sentences, not as words
  • Magnification and scale lost to unit conversion rather than method
  • Drawings photographed and marked live on a shared screen

Biology is the only Group 4 subject where drawing technique carries marks in its own right, and it is the cheapest set of marks on the whole course to recover. Examiners expect clean single lines rather than sketchy double ones, proportions that match what was observed, and no shading. Students who have never been told this draw the way they draw in a notebook and lose marks for presentation alone, with the biology entirely correct.

The label and annotation distinction is worth more. A label names a structure. An annotation says something about it: a function, a property, a relationship to another structure. Mark schemes ask for one or the other, and a student who writes labels where annotations were required has answered a different question. Annotations are sentences, and teaching a student to write them as sentences takes about twenty minutes.

Magnification and scale are the third piece. Calculating magnification from a scale bar, or working an actual size from a stated magnification, appears regularly and is lost to unit confusion more than to method. Micrometres and millimetres, converted in the middle of a calculation, with the answer left without a unit. It is a procedure, and like all procedures it holds once practised four or five times.

This whole area is two or three sessions. Drawings are photographed and marked on screen, which works better than marking them in a classroom because the image can be enlarged and annotated live. Of everything on this page it has the shortest gap between the session and the visible result, which is why families with an assessment three weeks away are often pointed here first.

04

Biology as the sixth subject: what good enough looks like

  • Establish first whether Biology is a points subject or a target subject
  • For a points subject, technique work beats content work almost always
  • Six to eight sessions is a realistic block for a Group 4 requirement
  • Deliberately ignoring secure content is a plan, not neglect
  • A mid-cycle school change is the exception that needs content hours

A large share of Standard Level Biology students in Dubai are not going anywhere near biology after the Diploma. They took it to satisfy Group 4, or because it was the least unappealing science, and their Higher Levels are the subjects their university offer depends on. For these students the right question is not how to maximise the Biology grade. It is how few hours it takes to stop Biology costing them points they need elsewhere.

That is a legitimate question and it deserves a straight answer rather than an upsell. The Diploma total is built from six subject grades plus points from the core, with a published minimum and conditions attached, so a Standard Level subject contributes to the total without being the number a university reads closely. A student two marks short in Biology and five marks short in a Higher Level that matters should not be spending equal hours on each.

For that student the highest-yield work is almost entirely technique: the question types table above, the drawing marks, and enough data-question practice to stop losing Paper 1B. That is a block of six to eight sessions, not a term, and it can be done in DP1 and left alone. Content gaps in secure areas can be ignored deliberately. Saying so costs us hours and it is the honest advice.

The students who do need more are the ones whose degree target includes Biology, who are weighing a move up to Higher Level, or who have a genuine content deficit from a mid-cycle school change. Those three cases are visible in the first session, and they get a different recommendation. The first conversation should establish which of the four situations your child is in, because they do not share a plan.

05

The Standard Level investigation inside forty practical hours

  • Four criteria, six marks each, identical at Standard and Higher Level
  • 40 practical hours across the course, shared laboratory access
  • Count the available laboratory periods before fixing the method
  • Database and secondary-data investigations suit a tight practical budget
  • Feedback is criterion comments; the student writes every word

The scientific investigation is 20% of the Standard Level grade, marked out of 24 across research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation at six marks each. The criteria are identical to Higher Level, which routinely surprises families. What is different is the practical budget: 40 hours across the whole Standard Level course rather than 60, and a school laboratory shared with every other set in the year.

The result is a predictable failure. A student designs a method that needs five concentrations, five replicates and three weeks of growth, gets two sessions of laboratory time, and ends up writing a conclusion from a data set that cannot support one. Research design and data analysis both suffer, and since each criterion is a quarter of the marks, one planning error can cost eight of the twenty-four.

The single most valuable session in this component happens before any data is collected, and it is mostly arithmetic rather than biology: how many laboratory periods are actually available, how many measurements fit in one, what range of the independent variable that permits, and whether a secondary-data or database investigation would produce better evidence than a thin wet-lab one. Database investigations are legitimate and well suited to a tight practical budget, provided the data source is properly identified and the processing is the student's own.

On support boundaries: a tutor teaches and gives feedback. Worked examples of error handling, an explanation of what an evaluation has to weigh rather than list, criterion-by-criterion comments so the student can see which marks are unearned. No sentence of the report comes from anyone but the student, and every checkpoint leaves a written record the school may inspect. Anyone selling a finished investigation is selling a risk that lands on the candidate's Diploma, not on theirs.

06

The DP2 year counted backwards, and who sets each deadline

Almost every date that governs a Dubai Diploma student's second year is set by their own school rather than by the IB, and families consistently discover this too late. The school sets the investigation draft deadline, the final internal submission date, the mock examination window, and the point at which predicted grades are issued. Those four dates shape the autumn entirely, and they can be obtained in writing from the Diploma coordinator in September.

The IB sets the examination session and the release of results. This page does not publish those dates. Automated access to the IB's own pages is blocked, which means no session or results date in this project has been confirmed from the IB directly, and publishing an unverified examination date on a tutoring page would be worse than publishing none. Your school's coordinator has the confirmed calendar, and it should be read from there.

What a family can do with the school-set dates is work backwards. If the investigation draft is due in the second week of November, data collection has to finish in October, which means the method has to be fixed in late September, which means the research question needs to be settled before the autumn half term. Written out like that, the autumn is tight but manageable. Discovered in November, it is neither.

The table lists the milestones with who controls each one and what should be finished by then. It is deliberately silent on specific dates, because the whole point is that your school's version is the one that matters and a generic calendar would mislead. Filling in the middle column from the coordinator's reply takes ten minutes and is the most useful planning any Diploma parent does.

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies alongside the Diploma

Dubai private schools teach Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies regardless of the international curriculum they are licensed to deliver, and KHDA's requirements for these subjects applied from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. For a Diploma student this is not a footnote. It is several fixed periods a week that sit outside the six Diploma subjects and outside the core, and it is the first thing that determines which evenings are actually free.

KHDA also sets how these classes are organised. For Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, schools must organise separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students, and combined classes for both groups are prohibited because the curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arabs and for Arabic as a first language, and Arabic is the primary language for Social Studies for Arab students, while non-Arab students are taught in the language of the school's licensed curriculum.

Instructional time for these subjects is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided the total weekly time is met, and the guidance advises that no mandatory subject lesson runs shorter than 25 minutes. Schools are also required to ensure that teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold the appropriate KHDA approval for those subjects. For the mandatory subjects, using different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is prohibited, which is why a tutor supporting Arabic works within the school's own material rather than bringing a parallel syllabus.

The practical consequence for Biology is scheduling, and the table makes it concrete. Map the fixed mandatory periods first, then place the Biology slot. Families who do this in September keep the same slot all year; families who do not find themselves renegotiating in October when the timetable settles. No competitor page reviewed in this market mentions these subjects at all, which is strange given how much of a Dubai student's week they occupy.

What Standard Level Biology support costs in Dubai

Published market rates in Dubai put a qualified online subject tutor at roughly AED 150-300 an hour and an IB or A Level specialist at roughly AED 200-450 and above, from agency rate pages and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table as read in October 2026. Platform rates for university-student tutors advertise from around AED 33-150. In-home visiting rates including travel are quoted at AED 180-500, and a premium named tutor is advertised at up to AED 650 an hour.

Standard Level usually sits in the lower half of the specialist band, because the pool of tutors who can teach it well is larger than the Higher Level pool. Several providers quote one International Baccalaureate rate regardless of level, so it is worth asking directly. Monthly packages visible in this market include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599-1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home visits.

The more important question for a Group 4 student is total hours rather than hourly rate. A technique block of six to eight sessions at a mid-band rate costs less than a term of weekly content teaching and will usually move the grade further. A provider who recommends a term before seeing any of your child's work is recommending a revenue plan. IB Gram publishes no rate card on this page; the first lesson is free and the rate is agreed in writing before the second.

For household context, KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package. Published monthly estimates for weekly one-hour tutoring in this market run from AED 240-600 at the budget end to AED 600-1,200 in the middle band and AED 1,000-2,000 and above for specialist support in an examination year.

09

Scheduling, coverage and the permit a paid tutor needs

Sessions are booked in Gulf Standard Time against the school's own week, with the mandatory UAE subject periods mapped first. For a Standard Level technique block, weekly works better than fortnightly, because each session builds on a specific drill rather than testing retention. Once the block is finished most families stop, which is the intended outcome rather than a lost customer.

Ramadan shortens the school day and moves the evening. Post-Iftar sessions are available and they work, particularly for drawing and data practice which does not require long sustained concentration. Agreeing the change before Ramadan starts is what makes it work rather than deciding in the first week. Eid is normally a clean pause, and a six-session block simply runs over eight weeks instead of six.

Coverage is disclosed before you book. A Standard Level Biology specialist in a narrow early-evening window is a more specific request than it sounds, and some weeks it cannot be met. The alternatives are a different time with the right specialist, a dated waiting period, or a tutor whose Standard Level experience is adjacent rather than exact, stated plainly so you can judge it yourself. No page reviewed in this market discloses a coverage limit at all.

On the legal position: individuals providing private tuition in the UAE need a MoHRE private tutor work permit, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Those tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no schedule of amounts has been published, so none is quoted here. MoHRE's own service page is the official route to apply.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Lessons are delivered over video, so the community changes the timetable rather than the tutor. What follows is how Standard Level Biology slots are actually arranged in these Dubai neighbourhoods, and the thing that most often forces a reschedule in each.

Jumeirah Lakes Towers

Tower living with short journeys from several schools, so arrival is early and a 4.15pm slot is realistic. The recurring obstacle is noise from a shared living space rather than traffic, so a fixed slot and a headset settle most of it.

Dubai Investments Park and Green Community

A spread-out area with long individual drives. Families here tend to settle on 5.30pm midweek and prefer a single 90-minute session to two shorter ones, which suits working through a full data-based section in one sitting.

Town Square and Mudon

Newer communities with a young Diploma population, much of it in DP1. Sessions commonly start at 5pm. The first-term question-analysis block matters more here, since most of these students left the Middle Years Programme recently.

Al Khawaneej and Al Mizhar

Villa communities with later school returns and long bus routes. A 6pm start is the norm, and families in this cluster are the most likely to ask for a weekend morning slot during the investigation window.

Remraam and Dubai South

Long commutes from schools further north, so weekday evenings are tight. Standard Level Biology families here often prefer a fortnightly 90-minute pattern with written tasks between, rather than a weekly hour that gets cancelled.

Jumeirah Park and Jumeirah Islands

Short journeys and a settled Diploma population. Early slots are available and used. The scheduling constraint parents raise is sport, since training blocks move weekly and a Biology slot anchored to a weekend morning survives better.

Barsha Heights and Tecom

Apartment living with students spread across many schools, so arrival times vary widely across one building. Slots are set individually and usually after 6pm, with a term-long fixed booking working better than a rolling arrangement.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Describe what goes wrong in one sentence

Not the grade, the symptom. Knows the definitions and loses marks on long questions. Blank on data figures. Drawings always marked down. That sentence places your child in a row of the question-types table, and the first session is built from it rather than from a syllabus overview.

    Say what Biology is for

A Group 4 requirement and a points subject needs a different plan from a subject a university offer depends on. We ask this in the first message because the honest recommendation for the first case is often a short block, and that answer is easier to give before anything is booked.

  3. 03

    Free 45-minute first lesson

One subject, 45 minutes, no card details taken. The student works one data question, one explain question and one drawing, which between them identify the problem. You receive a written note naming the question types to drill and an estimated number of sessions.

  4. 04

    Run the block, then stop

Technique blocks are finite. Six to eight sessions for the assessment objectives, two or three for drawing and data, and the block closes when the drill holds. Continuing afterwards is a decision to make on new evidence, not a default.

  5. 05

Test it cold on an unseen paper

At the end of a block the student sits unseen questions of the same types with no warning and no revision. The mark on those is the evidence. It is more informative than asking whether the student feels more confident, which almost everyone says yes to.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Built on question types, not a content tour

Most Standard Level Biology marks are lost in application, analysis and evaluation rather than recall. Sessions drill those directly with unfamiliar contexts and unseen figures, which is the work that cannot be done by rereading a textbook at home.

Drawing marks treated as marks

Biology awards marks for clean lines, correct proportion and annotations written as sentences, and almost nobody teaches it. Two or three sessions covers the whole area, and it is the fastest visible improvement available on the course.

Short blocks when short blocks are right

A Group 4 points subject rarely needs a term. If six sessions is the honest answer, that is what gets recommended, and the block ends when the drill holds rather than when a subscription runs out.

Your school's calendar, not a generic one

The deadlines that govern a DP2 Biology student are set by their own school. This page names who controls each one and where to get it, and publishes no unverified IB examination date, because none in this project has been confirmed from the IB directly.

The mandatory UAE subjects accounted for

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies occupy fixed periods in every Dubai private school week. Those are mapped before a Biology slot is chosen, which is why these bookings survive the October timetable settling.

Online, with the reason stated once

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we provide only in India. A shared screen is the better surface for marking a drawing or working a figure, and it puts a Standard Level specialist within reach of every community in the emirate.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How much of Standard Level Biology is memorising and how much is applying?+

Far less memorising than students assume. The Diploma science guides set objectives covering knowledge, understanding and application, analysis and evaluation, and investigation skills, and only the first is satisfied by learning definitions. Multiple-choice items usually require a fact applied to a new case. Data questions give unfamiliar figures. Paper 2 extended responses want a mechanism in sequence, a linked comparison or a judgement. A student who can define everything and scores a 4 has banked the recall marks and missed most of the rest, which is a technique problem rather than a knowledge one.

Are marks really awarded for biological drawings, and how are they lost?+

Yes, and they are lost mostly to presentation rather than biology. Examiners expect clean single lines rather than sketchy double ones, proportions that match what was observed, and no shading. Students who have never been told this draw as they would in a notebook and lose marks with the biology entirely correct. Add the magnification and scale calculations, which go wrong on unit conversion between micrometres and millimetres more often than on method. Two or three sessions covers the whole area and it shows up on the next assessment.

What is the difference between a label and an annotation in a Biology drawing?+

A label names a structure. An annotation says something about it: what it does, a property it has, how it relates to another structure. Mark schemes specify which is wanted, and a student writing labels where annotations were required has answered a different question and scores accordingly. The practical fix is to teach annotations as sentences rather than as words, which takes about twenty minutes and then needs practising on four or five different drawings before it becomes the default.

My son can define everything and still scores a 4. What is going wrong?+

He is almost certainly answering the topic rather than the question. The commonest pattern in marked Standard Level scripts is a comparison question answered as two separate descriptions, and an evaluation question answered either by accepting the method or by listing every limitation that comes to mind. Mark schemes award for linked differences on the same axis, and for the limitations that matter to the conclusion, ranked. The content he has is sufficient; the organisation of the answer is what is costing the marks, and it is a few sessions of drilling rather than a term.

How much less content does Standard Level Biology cover than Higher Level?+

Ninety taught hours less, 150 against 240, and twenty fewer practical hours. Standard Level covers the common core of themes A to D and omits the Higher Level extensions, which cluster in cell respiration and photosynthesis in detail, neural signalling, gene expression and inheritance with linkage. Standard Level papers also run ninety minutes each rather than two hours and two and a half. The investigation is identical: same four criteria, same twenty-four marks, same share of the grade, which regularly catches families expecting something lighter.

What does a Standard Level Biology tutor charge in Dubai?+

Market rates for a qualified subject tutor working online in Dubai run roughly AED 150-300 an hour, with International Baccalaureate and A Level specialists at roughly AED 200-450 and above, from published agency rate pages and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table as read in October 2026. Platform rates for university-student tutors start near AED 33-150. Standard Level usually sits in the lower half of the specialist band because the tutor pool is larger, and several providers quote one rate for both levels, so it is worth asking directly before accepting a figure.

There are three weeks until a school assessment. What is still worth doing?+

Triage, not coverage. Three weeks is enough to drill two or three question types and to fix drawing technique, and not enough to repair a term of content. The useful sequence is: get the assessment's stated content, identify which question types carry the most marks in it, practise those with unseen material, and explicitly abandon the rest. Writing down what you are not going to revise is the part students resist and the part that makes the plan work. One timed section should be sat before the day so pacing is known.

Can the Standard Level investigation use data from a database instead of a laboratory?+

Yes, and inside a 40-hour practical budget with shared laboratory access it is often the better choice. A database or secondary-data investigation can produce far stronger evidence than a thin wet-lab data set collected across two rushed periods, provided the data source is properly identified and all the processing and reasoning are the student's own. The criteria do not favour one approach over the other; they reward a design that can actually answer the question. This is worth deciding before the research question is finalised, not afterwards.

How do Arabic and Islamic Education lessons affect a Diploma student's week in Dubai?+

They occupy fixed periods that sit outside the six Diploma subjects. Dubai private schools teach Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies regardless of the international curriculum they are licensed to deliver, and KHDA requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. The practical effect is that those periods determine which evenings are genuinely free, so they should be mapped before a tutoring slot is chosen.

Which deadlines does a DP2 Biology student actually have to meet?+

Mostly ones the school sets: research question approval, data collection, the investigation draft, the final internal submission, the mock examination window and the issuing of predicted grades. The IB sets the examination session and the release of results. This page publishes no IB date, because automated access to the IB's own pages is blocked and no session date in this project has been confirmed from the IB directly. Ask your Diploma coordinator in September for the school's calendar in writing, then work the autumn backwards from the draft deadline.

Is Standard Level Biology accepted for nursing or other health degrees?+

Frequently yes, but it depends entirely on the programme and the country. Nursing, nutrition, physiotherapy, public health and several biomedical routes list Biology at Standard Level as acceptable, sometimes with Chemistry alongside it. Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary science generally require Higher Level sciences. Requirements vary between institutions and are revised between cycles, so the only reliable source is each university's current admissions page. Tutoring does not change a published prerequisite, and it is not required for any application.

Does a Standard Level student need to learn the statistics as well?+

Yes, though a smaller set than at Higher Level. Standard deviation for spread, standard error and error bars for confidence in a mean, correlation for the strength of a relationship, and the reciprocal diversity index in ecology. These appear in the data-based section of Paper 1 and in the investigation's data analysis criterion. Most marks are lost not in the calculation but in the sentence afterwards, where a student claims more than the statistic permits. One or two sessions covers what a Standard Level candidate needs.

Our school marks harshly. Should we worry about the predicted grade?+

It is worth understanding rather than worrying about. Predicted grades come from internal assessment data, and schools differ in how severely they set internal papers and how they weight components. The practical move is to ask which past papers the internal examinations were built from and how Paper 1 and Paper 2 marks were combined in the reported grade. With that known, the tutoring hours can be put where the weighting is heaviest. No tutor can promise a grade change, and a provider who offers one on a timetable is describing something they cannot control.

Can one tutor take both Standard Level Biology and Geography?+

Often, and the pairing is more sensible than it looks. Both subjects reward reading a figure, quoting a value or trend from it, and writing a conclusion that is evaluated rather than asserted. A student losing marks on Biology data questions is usually losing them on Geography resource questions for the same reason, and one block of work addresses both. Where it does not work is when one subject needs content teaching and the other needs technique, since those are different specialisms. Describe the symptom in each and the matching follows.

What if we need to stop after two sessions?+

Then you stop. Sessions here are booked as blocks or as individual hours rather than as a subscription, and nothing continues automatically. If the first two sessions show that the problem is smaller than expected, or that the fit is wrong, saying so is a reasonable outcome and the written note after each session is designed to make that judgement possible early. The free first lesson exists for the same reason: a diagnosis before a commitment, with no card details collected at that stage.

Does the Ministry of Education require anything particular from a Biology grade?+

Equivalency is a Ministry of Education process and it is not something a tutoring provider performs, influences or guarantees. For the British curriculum route the published requirement is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one Advanced Level subject at no less than E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. No verified International Baccalaureate points threshold has been read on the ministry's own pages, so none is published here. Confirm current requirements with the ministry directly.

Tell us the symptom, not the grade

Standard Level Biology problems are usually narrower and cheaper to fix than the grade suggests. Send one sentence describing what actually goes wrong, say whether Biology is a points subject or a target subject, and take the free 45-minute first lesson. Your child works one data question, one explain question and one drawing, which is enough to name the question types to drill and the number of sessions it should take. If that number is six, you will be told six, and the block will end when the drill holds.
