IB DP Economics HL Online Tutor in Dubai

An IB DP Economics HL online tutor in Dubai is usually hired because an essay that reads well keeps landing in the middle band. Economics is the Diploma subject where effort and mark correlate least, because the marks are given for things a student cannot see in their own writing: a correctly labelled diagram referred to in the text, a dated real-world example, and evaluation that weighs rather than lists. Those three are visible to a marker. This page is about making them visible to you.

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Economics is marked on three things students cannot see in their own work

Parents describe this subject the same way across Dubai. The child enjoys it, talks about it at dinner, writes two pages on demand-side policy, and comes back with a 4. There is no mystery in it. Diploma Economics awards marks against band descriptors, and a fluent essay that contains no diagram, no named example and no genuine weighing of alternatives sits in the middle of those bands however well it reads. The student cannot see this, because from the inside the essay feels complete.

At Higher Level the structure makes the problem sharper. Paper 1 is an extended response worth 20% of the grade, with a ten-mark explanatory part and a fifteen-mark evaluative part. Paper 2 is data response at 30%. Paper 3, which Standard Level candidates do not sit, is 30% on its own and is quantitative and policy-focused. The portfolio of three commentaries is the remaining 20%, marked out of 45. More than half the grade therefore sits in components with a heavy technical element, and essay fluency carries you through none of them.

So the sessions on this page are built around marked work. The student writes a fifteen-mark part (b) under time. The tutor marks it against the band descriptors, writes beside each paragraph which descriptor it satisfies and which it does not, and the two of them rebuild it. The output is an essay with the band movement annotated on it. Three of those and the pattern is unmistakable, usually the same two descriptors missing every time.

Alongside that run two record-keeping jobs that sound administrative and are worth several marks each. The first is a diagram checklist: every diagram the course needs, with what must be labelled on each, ticked off as the student proves they can draw it from memory with axes titled correctly. The second is an example bank the student builds themselves: concept, country, date, what happened, where it was read. Both are documents you can look at, and neither exists in most Economics students' folders.

Lessons are delivered online, over live video, one student at a time, in Gulf Standard Time slots arranged around the school week. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we run only in India. Economics suits a shared screen better than most subjects, because a diagram can be drawn, corrected and redrawn in front of the student, and an essay can be marked with both people reading the same page.

This page is written for DP1 and DP2 students in Dubai's KHDA-inspected private schools. Every AED figure below is a market rate with the source and the month it was read. The first lesson is free, runs for 45 minutes, covers one subject and asks for no card details at that stage.

Higher Level Economics reaches Dubai students through three International Baccalaureate routes, and the pressure around the subject differs sharply between them even though the examination does not. Knowing which route your child is on changes the number of hours that make sense.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Economics is a Group 3 subject and at Higher Level it carries four assessed components rather than three. The course is organised in four units, introduction to economics, microeconomics, macroeconomics and the global economy, and threaded through nine key concepts that the portfolio and the papers both reference. Higher Level adds the theory of the firm, several macroeconomic models and a significant amount of calculation.

Economics is one of the more popular Group 3 choices in Dubai, where many families have a business or finance degree in view. Dubai had 387,441 private school students across 227 schools in 2024-25, with International Baccalaureate candidates at 7% of enrolment, and Economics sets are usually large, which means a student's fifteen-mark essays may be marked quickly and returned without the band reasoning attached.

MYPAges 11-16 · Individuals and societies

Middle Years Programme

Middle Years individuals and societies builds argument and source-handling skills, but it does not require diagrams, calculations or the kind of named, dated evidence Economics marks reward. Students arriving in Higher Level Economics from the Middle Years Programme are usually strong writers who have never been asked to support a claim with a specific country and a specific year, which is precisely where the band descriptors bite.

The transition is easiest to manage in the first term of DP1, when the diagram checklist can be built as the content is taught rather than reconstructed in DP2. Dubai schools running both programmes on one campus often assume the continuity is smooth; the discontinuity is technical rather than academic, and it is cheap to fix early.

CPAges 16-19 · With a career-related study

Career-related Programme

Career-related Programme students take Diploma courses alongside a career-related study, the reflective project and the personal and professional skills course. Economics at Higher Level is a demanding choice in that context because of Paper 3, which is a full component with its own skill set. It is examined identically to the full Diploma version, including the portfolio and its 45 marks.

In Dubai the Career-related cohort is small and easy to overlook. A Career-related Economics candidate may be the only student sitting Paper 3 in their timetable band, which removes the study-group effect that carries most Higher Level students through the quantitative work. One-to-one hours do more here than they would for a student inside a large set.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Higher Level Economics is usually taken with two other Higher Levels, and the combination decides how much time it can have. The grid lists the subjects Dubai families most often ask about alongside it, with the thing each pairing actually needs.

Economics

HL and SL

The four units plus the Higher Level extensions: the theory of the firm, the Keynesian multiplier, the Phillips curve, and calculation across all four units. Sessions divide between marked essays, Paper 3 quantitative drill, the diagram checklist and the portfolio commentaries.

Business Management

HL and SL

The commonest pairing in Dubai. Students conflate the two subjects' command terms, answering an Economics evaluation question with a business recommendation. Separating the two mark schemes explicitly is usually the first useful hour where both subjects are being supported.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The standard maths route for an Economics student and the one that pays into Paper 3. Percentage change, index numbers, elasticity arithmetic and interpreting a rate of change are shared ground, and a session on either subject tends to move both.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Taken by Economics students whose degree target specifies it, which many quantitative economics programmes do. The calculus content helps with marginal reasoning, and the mathematical exploration competes with the Economics portfolio for the same DP2 autumn weeks.

Geography

HL and SL

Shares development and trade content with the global economy unit, and rewards the same skill of using a named place and a date as evidence. Students strong in one and weak in the other are usually applying the technique in only one of the two.

Global Politics

HL and SL

Pairs naturally with the global economy unit. The difficulty students report is that Global Politics rewards contested interpretation while Economics rewards a model applied precisely, so the two subjects need their written registers kept apart.

History

HL and SL

Frequently taken alongside Economics by Dubai students heading for social science degrees. The transferable skill is argument structure; the thing that does not transfer is the diagram, which History students consistently under-use in their Economics answers.

Psychology

HL and SL

Chosen as a third Group 3 subject or alongside one. Its research-methods content supports the evaluation habit Economics rewards, since both subjects ask how far evidence supports a claim rather than whether a claim sounds reasonable.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Requested where an Economics grade is being limited by structure rather than content. A student who writes long undifferentiated paragraphs loses marks in both subjects, and one block of work on paragraph function improves both scripts.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three patterns cover nearly every Higher Level Economics request from Dubai. Each produces a different artefact, and the choice between them depends on which component is weakest rather than on how many hours a family wants to buy.

Weekly essay-and-mark rotation

One 90-minute session a week in which a fifteen-mark part (b) is written under time and then marked against the band descriptors in front of the student. The rotation moves across units so the same evaluation habit is tested on unfamiliar content. The artefact is an essay with the descriptor movement annotated on it.

  • A timed fifteen-mark answer written in the session
  • Marked against band descriptors with reasons beside each paragraph
  • Rewritten in part, not redrafted wholesale
  • A running note of which descriptors are missed repeatedly

Paper 3 quantitative clinic

A finite block of four to six sessions on the Higher Level paper only: the calculations across all four units, how a quantitative answer is set out so the method earns marks even when the arithmetic slips, and the policy recommendation that closes each question. Most students have never practised Paper 3 as a component in its own right.

  • One calculation family per session, then timed practice
  • Method shown explicitly so partial credit is available
  • Diagrams drawn to support the quantitative answer
  • Two full Paper 3 sections sat under time by the end

Diagram and example bank build

Two or three sessions that produce two documents the student keeps: a checklist of every diagram the course requires with what must be labelled on each, and an example bank organised by key concept with country, date and source for each entry. Both are built by the student, tested cold, and then used in every subsequent essay.

  • Each diagram drawn from memory with axes titled before it is ticked
  • Examples recorded with country, date and where they were read
  • Organised by key concept so a question can be matched to evidence
  • Tested cold in a later session rather than assumed to be learned

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The four Higher Level components, and why fluency carries none of them

Higher Level Economics is assessed in four parts, and Standard Level students sit only three of them. Paper 1 is an extended response worth 20% of the grade, offering a choice of questions each with a ten-mark explanatory part and a fifteen-mark evaluative part. Paper 2 is data response at 30%, built around unseen text and figures. Paper 3 is Higher Level only and worth 30% on its own, quantitative and policy-focused. The portfolio of three commentaries completes the grade at 20%, marked out of 45.

Set out like that, the shape of the problem is obvious. The two components where a confident writer scores well on fluency alone are worth half the grade between them, and even there the band descriptors require a diagram and a named example before the upper bands open. Paper 3 rewards fluency not at all. The portfolio rewards it only once the diagrams, terminology, key concept and evaluation criteria have been satisfied.

This is the first conversation to have with a Dubai family whose child is enjoying the subject and scoring a 4 or a 5. The content is usually fine. What is missing is technical, component-specific and entirely teachable, and the hours should be allocated by component rather than by unit. A student weak in Paper 3 and strong in Paper 1 should not be spending sessions on microeconomics theory.

The table puts each component against what it actually rewards and the failure mode seen most often in marked Dubai scripts. Read it against your child's last school report, component by component if the school breaks it down that way. If it does not, that is a reasonable thing to ask the teacher for, and most will provide it.

02

Paper 3: the component Standard Level students never see and Higher Level students rarely practise

Paper 3 is thirty per cent of the grade and the component Dubai students are least prepared for. It is quantitative, it is compulsory rather than a choice of questions, and it closes by asking for a policy recommendation that has to be justified from the figures just produced. Students who are comfortable writing about monetary policy find themselves calculating and then arguing from their own numbers, which is an unfamiliar sequence.

The calculations themselves are not advanced mathematics. Percentage change, index numbers and real values, price and income elasticity, the effect of an indirect tax or subsidy on consumer and producer surplus, unemployment and inflation rates, the Keynesian multiplier, measures of inequality including the Gini coefficient, terms of trade, and the balance of payments arithmetic. What makes them cost marks is presentation: a student who writes only the final number loses everything when the arithmetic slips, where one who sets out the method keeps most of it.

The policy part has its own discipline. A recommendation that lists three possible policies scores less than one that chooses, says why, and names what the choice gives up. Dubai students are generally good at the breadth and weak at the commitment, which is the same habit that caps their fifteen-mark essays. Practising it inside Paper 3 is efficient because it improves two components at once.

The table lists the calculation families with where each comes from and the error that recurs. A block of four to six sessions covers all of them with timed practice attached, which is the most contained and most reliably productive block on this page.

Diagrams are marks: the checklist most Economics folders do not contain

  • Axes titled, curves labelled, equilibria marked, and referred to in the text
  • A shift distinguished from a movement along the curve, every time
  • Drawn from memory before the checklist item is ticked
  • Diagram chosen first, essay written around it afterwards
  • Most students can draw about half the list cold at the first test

In Diploma Economics a diagram is not an illustration. Band descriptors and portfolio criteria award marks for diagrams that are correctly labelled, correctly titled on both axes, relevant to the question, and referred to in the written answer rather than parked beside it. A student who draws a competent supply and demand diagram and never mentions it in the text has done most of the work and collected part of the mark.

The list of diagrams the course needs is finite, which is why a checklist works. Supply and demand with shifts and with a change in quantity supplied distinguished from a shift. Price ceilings and floors with the resulting shortage or surplus shown. Indirect tax and subsidy with incidence split. Negative production and positive consumption externalities. The cost curves and profit maximisation at the Higher Level theory of the firm, with the market structure diagrams that follow. Aggregate demand and aggregate supply in both the Keynesian and the new classical presentations. The Phillips curve in the short and long run. Tariffs, quotas and subsidies in trade. An exchange rate diagram. The Lorenz curve.

The checklist is used in one way only: the student draws each diagram from memory, with axes titled, before the item is ticked. Recognising a diagram in a textbook is not the same as producing it under time with the axes right, and the gap between those two states is where a large number of marks sit. Most students discover they can draw perhaps half the list cold.

Once the checklist is complete it changes how essays get written. A fifteen-mark question becomes a decision about which diagram carries the argument, drawn first and then written around. Students who adopt that order stop producing diagram-free essays entirely, which is the single most common cap on an Economics grade in this market.

04

The example bank: nine key concepts, and evidence with a date on it

  • Entries carry concept, country or market, year, event and source
  • Fifteen to twenty entries across the four units is a working minimum
  • An undated example reads to an examiner as a half-memory
  • UAE policy examples are legitimate and under-used by local candidates
  • The student builds it; the tutor only tests and rejects incomplete entries

Diploma Economics is organised around nine key concepts: scarcity, choice, efficiency, equity, economic well-being, sustainability, change, interdependence and intervention. They are not decoration. The portfolio requires a commentary to engage with a named key concept, and the papers' upper bands expect real-world evidence rather than hypothetical illustration. A student who writes that governments sometimes subsidise agriculture has produced no evidence at all.

The remedy is a bank the student builds and owns. Each entry records the key concept, the country or market, the year, what actually happened, and where it was read. Fifteen to twenty entries spread across the four units is enough to answer almost any question with something specific, and building them is work the student does between sessions rather than inside them.

The discipline that makes the bank useful is the date and the source. An example with no year attached reads as something half-remembered, and examiners treat it that way. An example with a year and a named policy or figure reads as evidence. Dubai students have an advantage here that most of them do not use: the UAE economy supplies clean, current illustrations of intervention, diversification, subsidy, indirect taxation and interdependence through trade, and those examples are as valid as any other.

Tested cold in a later session, the bank reveals the same thing as the diagram checklist: students know fewer specifics than they believe. The repair is cheap and it is the student's own work, which is also why it holds. Nothing in the bank is supplied by a tutor; the tutor's role is to ask for the date, the source and the concept each entry is filed under, and to reject entries that cannot supply all three.

05

Where the fifteen-mark answer stops being a six and becomes a four

  • Weigh magnitude, not just direction of an effect
  • Name the model's assumptions and test whether they hold here
  • Separate short run from long run and say which is decisive
  • Identify who bears the cost and who gets the benefit
  • Reach a position and acknowledge the strongest objection to it

The fifteen-mark part (b) is the question Dubai Economics students most reliably underperform on, and the reason is consistent. Asked to discuss or evaluate, students explain thoroughly and then add a short paragraph beginning with a concession. That structure satisfies the explanatory descriptors and barely touches the evaluative ones, which is why hard-working students plateau in the middle bands for a whole year.

Evaluation in this subject has a specific content. It weighs the magnitude of an effect, not just its direction. It names the assumptions the model requires and asks whether they hold in the case being discussed. It distinguishes short run from long run and says which matters here. It considers who bears the cost and who receives the benefit. And it reaches a position, with the strongest objection to that position acknowledged rather than ignored.

Taught as a list of moves, this is learnable in a term. A student who has written six fifteen-mark answers, each marked against the descriptors with the missing move named, starts producing the moves unprompted. The marking is the mechanism: a grade on its own teaches nothing, while a descriptor written beside a paragraph saying this is where the band changes teaches something immediately usable.

Command terms matter alongside this. Explain asks for a mechanism. Analyse asks for the mechanism plus its consequences. Discuss asks for a balanced treatment with a judgement. Evaluate asks for the judgement to be supported by weighing. Examine asks for the assumptions to be interrogated. Students who treat these as synonyms write one kind of answer for all of them, and get one kind of mark.

06

The portfolio: three commentaries, and the boundary a tutor keeps

  • Three commentaries, different units, different key concepts, 800 words each
  • 45 marks in total across the portfolio
  • The article choice decides most of the mark and is made first
  • Re-selecting a weak article early is cheaper than rescuing it late
  • Feedback is criterion comments; every sentence is the student's own

The portfolio is 20% of the Higher Level grade and marked out of 45. It is three commentaries, each on a different unit of the course and engaging a different key concept, each capped at 800 words, built from a published news article the student selects. The marks inside each commentary reward diagrams, accurate terminology, application and analysis, engagement with the key concept and evaluation, with a further allocation for meeting the portfolio's overall requirements.

The decision that governs the mark is the article, and it is made before any writing happens. An article has to be recent, has to contain enough economic substance to support diagrams and analysis, and has to genuinely carry the key concept it is being filed under. Students routinely choose a piece that mentions inflation, then discover at 600 words that there is nothing in it to analyse. Re-selecting at that point is cheaper than continuing, and a tutor's most useful contribution here is to say so early.

What a tutor may do is explain how a criterion is satisfied, show what a commentary with strong evaluation looks like in general terms, ask whether the diagram selected supports the argument, and comment against each criterion so the student can see which marks are unearned. What no tutor may do is author any part of a commentary, supply text for it, or return a version with sentences inserted. The student revises their own words. Each checkpoint leaves a written record the school may inspect.

This matters more in Economics than in most subjects, because finished commentaries are openly sold in this market. A purchased commentary is an academic honesty breach that lands on the candidate's Diploma, not on the seller, and it is detectable. Saying that plainly is part of the service rather than a disclaimer attached to it.

07

What progress looks like in a subject with no right answers

Economics parents ask a fair question: if the essay has no correct answer, how is improvement measured? The answer is that the band descriptors are specific enough to track, and the technical elements are countable. Whether a diagram appeared, whether it was labelled, whether it was referred to in the text, whether an example carried a date, how many evaluative moves the answer contained, and which descriptor the marker identified as the ceiling. Those are all recordable, and together they are a better progress measure than a grade.

Measured that way, different things move at different rates. Diagram production moves within two or three sessions, because it is a drawing skill with a finite list. The example bank moves as fast as the student is willing to build it. Evaluation structure takes a term, because it is a thinking habit rather than a technique. Paper 3 calculation moves inside its block, provided the method-writing discipline is included rather than assumed.

A reported grade lags all of them, which families should know in advance. A school grade aggregates components sat at different times, so a student whose essays have visibly changed may see no movement on the next report and a clear change after the mocks. Anyone offering a grade improvement by a given date is selling a promise over something they do not control, and in this market that promise is made often.

The table sets out the measures, where each one comes from, and what counts as movement in it. It is deliberately plain. You should be able to open the folder at any point and see the marked essays, the diagram checklist, the example bank and the descriptor notes, and form your own view without asking anyone how things are going.

Economics in Dubai: KHDA schools, the UAE as evidence, and what Higher Level is for

Private schools in Dubai are overseen by KHDA, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate, and inspection outcomes are published on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak. Elsewhere the regulator changes: ADEK in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, the Sharjah Private Education Authority in Sharjah, the Department of Knowledge in Ras Al Khaimah, and the federal Ministry of Education in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. In Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah the authorities also approve tuition fees, curricula and assessment methods rather than only inspecting.

For an Economics student the local setting is also material. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. That is a government intervention in a market, with a stated objective and a cost, and it is exactly the kind of dated, sourced example the upper bands reward. Dubai's 2026-27 intake also adds seven private schools and 16,846 places, with enrolment having risen 6% in 2025-26, which is a supply response a student can analyse properly.

Higher Level Economics is a common choice for Dubai students heading to business, finance, international relations or economics degrees. Whether Higher Level is required depends on the programme: quantitative economics courses often specify a particular mathematics route rather than Economics itself, and several business programmes require neither. That makes the subject choice conversation worth having with the admissions pages open, because the assumption that Economics is the prerequisite for a business degree is frequently wrong.

Separately, the Ministry of Education runs certificate equivalency, which is a regulatory process and not something a tutoring provider performs, influences or guarantees. For the British track the published requirement is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one Advanced Level at no less than E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. No verified International Baccalaureate points figure has been read on the ministry's own pages, so none is published here.

09

Cost in AED, scheduling, and what happens if the slot cannot be filled

Published market rates in Dubai put a qualified online subject tutor at roughly AED 150-300 an hour and an International Baccalaureate or A Level specialist at roughly AED 200-450 and above, from agency rate pages and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table as read in October 2026. Platform rates for university-student tutors advertise from around AED 33-150, in-home visiting rates including travel are quoted at AED 180-500, and a premium named tutor is advertised at up to AED 650 an hour. Monthly packages seen in this market include AED 799 for eight online sessions.

Higher Level Economics tends to sit in the upper half of the specialist band for one specific reason: marking. A fifteen-mark essay marked properly against the descriptors takes time outside the session, and providers differ on whether that time is charged, included or simply not done. That single difference matters more than twenty dirhams on the hourly rate, and it is the first question to ask. IB Gram publishes no rate card here; the first lesson is free and the rate is agreed in writing before the second.

Sessions run in Gulf Standard Time against the school week. Ninety minutes suits this subject better than sixty, because a timed fifteen-mark answer plus its marking does not fit in an hour. During Ramadan school hours shorten and many families move to a post-Iftar slot, which works well for diagram and example-bank work even if full essays are better left to weekends. Eid is normally a clean pause. Agreeing any change before Ramadan begins is what keeps the plan intact.

Coverage is stated before booking. Higher Level Economics with Paper 3 depth in a narrow evening window is a specific request and in some weeks it cannot be met. The alternatives are a different time with the right specialist, a dated waiting period, or a tutor whose Higher Level experience is adjacent, described plainly so you can decide. On the legal side, individuals giving private lessons in the UAE need a MoHRE private tuition work permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years, and tutoring without one attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, with no published schedule of amounts and therefore none quoted here.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Delivery is over video, so the community sets the clock rather than the tutor list. The notes below describe how Higher Level Economics sessions are actually scheduled in these Dubai neighbourhoods and what tends to disrupt them.

Downtown Dubai and DIFC

Apartment living with parents often working nearby, so an evening slot after 7pm is both available and reliable. Students in this cluster tend to have ready access to financial news sources, which makes the example bank easier to build well.

Jumeirah Golf Estates and Victory Heights

Villa communities with long single-car journeys and a late return. A 6pm start is the norm, and families here more often choose a ninety-minute session so a full fifteen-mark essay can be written and marked in one sitting.

Dubai Creek Harbour

A newer community with students travelling to schools across the city, so arrival times vary within the same tower. Slots are agreed individually, usually from 5.30pm, and a fixed term-long booking holds better than a rolling weekly arrangement.

Al Nahda and Al Qusais

Dense, well-served by schools, with early and predictable arrival. A 4.30pm Economics slot is realistic here, which suits Paper 3 quantitative drill because it rewards a fresh rather than a tired student.

Tilal Al Ghaf and Damac Hills

Spread-out communities with long bus routes and a young Diploma cohort. Sessions commonly begin at 5.45pm, and the diagram checklist is particularly useful in DP1 here because many students are new to the subject entirely.

Bur Dubai and Oud Metha

An older schools district with short journeys and large Group 3 sets. Students from this cluster most often arrive wanting their essays marked properly, because a big Economics set means quick marking without the band reasoning attached.

The Sustainable City and Dubailand

Longer commutes and a pattern of weekend-weighted study. Families here frequently anchor Economics to a Saturday morning block and use a short midweek slot for the portfolio commentaries during the autumn.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Al Barsha South, Motor City and Dubai Sports City

A cluster with substantial Group 3 cohorts and schools running the Diploma alongside other curricula. Students we support here most often arrive with sound content and consistently mid-band fifteen-mark answers, which is the profile that responds fastest to marking against the descriptors.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send one essay, unedited

A single fifteen-mark answer in your child's own handwriting or typing, with the teacher's mark on it if there is one. That one document shows whether a diagram appeared, whether an example had a date, and how many evaluative moves the answer contained, which is most of the diagnosis.

  2. 02

    Free 45-minute first lesson

One subject, 45 minutes, no card details. The essay is marked against the band descriptors with the student watching, and the ceiling descriptor is named. You receive a written note saying which of the three usual gaps applies and whether Paper 3 needs its own block.

  3. 03

    Build the two documents first

Before any content teaching, the diagram checklist and the example bank get started, because they change every subsequent essay. The student builds both; sessions test them cold. Two or three sessions covers the setup, and the documents stay with your child afterwards.

  4. 04

    Rotate marked essays weekly

One timed fifteen-mark answer per session, across different units, each marked against the descriptors in front of the student with the missing move named. The pattern across three essays is what tells you whether the problem is structural or content-based.

  5. 05

Add the Paper 3 block when it is needed

Paper 3 is thirty per cent of the grade and a separate skill, so it is booked as its own block of four to six sessions rather than folded into weekly essay work. Students doing well on Papers 1 and 2 often need only this, which is a short and finite commitment.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Essays marked against the descriptors, not scored

A number on an essay teaches nothing. A descriptor written beside a paragraph, saying this is where the band changes, is immediately usable. Every session produces a marked script with the ceiling descriptor named, and you can read it yourself.

Paper 3 treated as its own component

Thirty per cent of the Higher Level grade sits in a quantitative paper that Standard Level students never see and most Higher Level students never practise as a unit. It is booked as a finite block, and method presentation is taught so an arithmetic slip costs one mark instead of four.

Two documents your child keeps

A diagram checklist tested by drawing from memory, and an example bank with concept, country, year and source for every entry. Both are built by the student, both are tested cold, and both outlast the tutoring block.

Rates in AED with the source named

Three of the six best-ranking pages in this market publish no price at all. Every figure here carries the rate card or survey it came from and the month it was read, including the fact that marking time is charged by some providers and not done at all by others.

The honesty line stated, in a market that ignores it

Finished portfolio commentaries are openly sold for this subject. No part of a commentary is authored by anyone but the student, feedback is given as criterion comments, and every checkpoint leaves a written record the school may inspect.

Online, and the reason is the screen

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we run only in India. A diagram can be drawn, corrected and redrawn live on a shared screen, and an essay can be marked with both people reading the same page, which is most of what this subject needs.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What does Paper 3 actually ask Higher Level Economics students to do?+

It is a compulsory quantitative and policy paper worth 30% of the Higher Level grade, and Standard Level candidates do not sit it. Questions require calculation across all four units, percentage change and index numbers, elasticities, tax and subsidy incidence, unemployment and inflation rates, the Keynesian multiplier, inequality measures, terms of trade, then a policy recommendation justified from the figures just produced. The arithmetic is not advanced. What costs marks is writing only the final number, because an arithmetic slip then removes the whole mark instead of one part of it.

How many diagrams does a Higher Level Economics student need to be able to draw?+

The list is finite, which is why a checklist works: supply and demand with shifts distinguished from movements, price ceilings and floors, indirect tax and subsidy with incidence split, negative production and positive consumption externalities, the cost curves and profit maximisation, the market structure diagrams, aggregate demand and supply in both presentations, the short and long run Phillips curve, tariffs, quotas and trade subsidies, an exchange rate diagram and the Lorenz curve. Most students can draw about half of them cold at a first test, with axes correctly titled.

Why does my daughter write a full essay and still score in the middle band?+

Almost certainly because she is explaining thoroughly and evaluating thinly. The usual structure is several strong paragraphs of mechanism followed by one short concession, which satisfies the explanatory descriptors and barely touches the evaluative ones. Evaluation in this subject means weighing magnitude rather than direction, naming the assumptions the model needs and testing them, separating short run from long run, identifying who bears the cost, and reaching a position with the strongest objection acknowledged. Taught as a set of moves and practised on six marked essays, it is learnable within a term.

What counts as a real-world example, and how many does a student need?+

An example needs a country or market, a year, a specific policy or figure, and a source where it was read. Writing that governments sometimes subsidise agriculture is not evidence; naming the country, the year and the measure is. Fifteen to twenty entries spread across the four units is enough to answer almost any question with something specific. Dubai students have an advantage they rarely use, since UAE policy supplies current, documented illustrations of intervention, diversification, subsidy and trade interdependence that are as valid as any other country's.

Is Economics at Higher Level harder than Standard Level, or simply longer?+

Structurally harder, because of Paper 3. Higher Level sits four components rather than three, and Paper 3 is 30% of the grade on its own, quantitative and compulsory. The content additions are also specific: the theory of the firm with cost curves, revenues, profit maximisation and market structures, the Keynesian multiplier, the Phillips curve, and calculations across all four units, plus the Marshall-Lerner condition and terms of trade in the global economy. The portfolio is identical at both levels in form, with the share of the grade differing.

How much does a Higher Level Economics online tutor cost in Dubai?+

Market rates for a qualified online subject tutor in Dubai run roughly AED 150-300 an hour, with International Baccalaureate and A Level specialists at roughly AED 200-450 and above, from published agency rate pages and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table as read in October 2026. Economics tends to sit in the upper half of that band because marking a fifteen-mark essay properly takes time outside the session. Ask directly whether that marking is charged, included, or not done, because it affects real cost more than the headline rate does.

Can a tutor mark a fifteen-mark essay and show where the band changes?+

That is the core of these sessions. The student writes the answer under time, then the tutor marks it against the band descriptors with the student watching, writing beside each paragraph which descriptor it satisfies and which it does not, and naming the descriptor that is currently the ceiling. The student then rewrites part of the answer rather than redrafting the whole thing. Across three marked essays the same one or two missing descriptors usually recur, which turns a vague sense of underperformance into a specific target.

Does Higher Level Economics require strong mathematics?+

It requires confident arithmetic rather than advanced mathematics. Percentage change, index numbers and real values, elasticity formulae, rates calculated from the right denominator, areas read off a diagram and then quantified, and the multiplier. Students taking Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation find the overlap substantial and should plan the two subjects together. Students who struggle with Paper 3 usually struggle with presentation and with knowing which base or denominator applies, not with the operations themselves, and both respond quickly to drilling.

My son takes Higher Level Economics but no business subject. Is that a problem?+

Not at all, and in one respect it helps. Students taking both frequently conflate the two mark schemes, answering an Economics evaluation question with a business-style recommendation, which costs marks in the Economics paper. A student with no business subject has no such habit to unlearn. What he does need is the technical set this page is built around: the diagrams drawn from memory, examples with dates and sources, and evaluation written as weighing rather than as a concession paragraph.

How do you show progress in a subject where essays have no right answer?+

By tracking the countable parts. Whether a diagram appeared, whether it was labelled and referred to in the text, whether each example carried a year and a source, how many evaluative moves the answer contained, and which descriptor the marker identified as the ceiling. All of those are recorded on the marked scripts and in the two documents the student builds. Diagram production moves in two or three sessions, evaluation structure takes a term, and a reported school grade lags everything because it aggregates components sat at different times.

Can UAE economic policy be used as evidence in the examination papers?+

Yes, and local candidates under-use it. Examiners want specific, dated, sourced evidence and have no preference for any particular country. The UAE supplies clean illustrations of government intervention, diversification away from a single sector, subsidy and indirect taxation, and interdependence through trade and logistics. A Dubai example with the year and the measure named scores exactly as well as a European one and is often easier for the student to remember accurately, which matters under time pressure.

What may a tutor do with a portfolio commentary draft?+

Explain how each criterion is satisfied, describe in general terms what strong evaluation looks like, ask whether the diagram chosen actually supports the argument being made, point out that the article cannot carry the key concept it has been filed under, and comment against each criterion so the student can see which marks are unearned. A tutor may not author any part of a commentary or return a version with sentences inserted. The student revises their own words, and each checkpoint leaves a written record the school may inspect.

When should a Higher Level Economics student start outside support?+

The most efficient point is the first term of DP1, because that is when the diagram checklist can be built as the content is taught rather than reconstructed eighteen months later. The second-best point is immediately after the first set of internal examinations, when the gap between content knowledge and band performance becomes visible. Starting after the February mocks still works for Paper 3 and for evaluation structure, both of which are technique, but it is too late to build an example bank at a comfortable pace.

Is Higher Level Economics needed for a business or finance degree?+

Often not, which surprises families. Many business and management programmes require no Economics at all, while quantitative economics and finance courses more frequently specify a particular mathematics route than the Economics subject itself. Requirements differ by country and by institution and are revised between cycles, so the subject-choice conversation should happen with the admissions pages open. Tutoring does not change a published prerequisite, and no tutoring is required for any application or for a certificate equivalency process.

Can Economics sessions shift during Ramadan and the examination run?+

Yes, with the change agreed before Ramadan rather than during its first week. School hours shorten and evenings run late, and post-Iftar slots work well for diagram practice and example-bank building, which do not need long sustained concentration. Full timed essays are usually better moved to a weekend morning during that period. Eid is normally a clean pause. In the run to the session itself, families commonly keep the weekly essay slot and add a short second slot for Paper 3 practice.

What if no Higher Level Economics specialist is available for our slot?+

You are told before booking rather than afterwards. Higher Level Economics with Paper 3 depth in a narrow weekday evening window is a specific request, and in some weeks it cannot be filled. The options are a different time with the right specialist, a waiting period with an actual date attached, or a tutor whose Higher Level experience sits in an adjacent part of the course, described plainly so the judgement is yours. No competitor page reviewed in this market discloses a coverage limit at all.

Send one essay and have it marked properly

The fastest way to find out what is capping a Higher Level Economics grade is to have one fifteen-mark answer marked against the band descriptors rather than scored. Send a single essay in your child's own words, with the teacher's mark on it if there is one, and book the free 45-minute first lesson. The tutor marks it while your child watches and names the ceiling descriptor. You receive that in writing, along with whether Paper 3 needs a block of its own and how much of the diagram checklist your child can currently draw from memory.
