Cambridge IGCSE Art and Design 0400 Home Tutor in Dubai

Parents searching for a Cambridge IGCSE Art and Design 0400 home tutor in Dubai are almost always asking a price question first. This page answers it in dirhams, names what moves the number in this emirate, and then says plainly how the lessons run: one-to-one over live video, with the candidate's sketchbook on camera and the tutor marking against the Cambridge assessment objectives. No tutor is sent to a Dubai address. The case for video on a practical subject is made below in a costed table rather than asserted.

  • AED bands quoted from named published sources, with the date each figure was read
  • Portfolio pages read against one Cambridge 0400 assessment objective at a time
  • Sessions timed to Gulf Standard Time and moved post-Iftar through Ramadan
  • One free trial lesson per family, booked without card details

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

What a Cambridge 0400 home tutor in Dubai actually costs, and what the number is made of

Market rates for one-to-one IGCSE support in Dubai run roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour online for a qualified subject tutor, and roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour for a tutor who travels to the family. Those bands come from published provider pages and from Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table, read in October 2026. They are the market, not an IB Gram price list. What this page adds is the part the market does not explain: why Art and Design sits at the upper end of whichever band you are looking at, and which of the six Cambridge 0400 areas of study quietly costs a Dubai household the most to resource.

Art is priced differently because the billable hour is not where the work happens. A maths tutor can diagnose a weakness in twelve minutes of a past paper. A 0400 tutor has to read thirty or forty sketchbook spreads, decide which assessment objective each one is evidencing, and then write a page plan the candidate can actually make in the week available. A tutor who charges AED 200 and does that reading unpaid is subsidising the quote. A tutor who charges AED 320 and includes it is often the cheaper purchase across a term. The first question to ask any Dubai art tutor is therefore not the rate. It is what the rate covers between sessions.

The second cost driver is distance. Dubai is a long city. A tutor living in Al Barsha and teaching a candidate in Arabian Ranches absorbs forty to eighty minutes of driving into every visit, and that time is paid for whether or not it appears as a line on the invoice. It also narrows the choice of tutor to whoever happens to live within a sensible radius, which on a specialism as thin as Cambridge 0400 can mean a general art teacher rather than somebody who has read the syllabus against real candidate work. That trade is the reason IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai at all.

Lessons for Dubai families are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video. Home visits are a service IB Gram runs only in India. On a practical subject that surprises people, so the mechanics are worth stating: the candidate props the sketchbook under a phone or a document camera, the tutor sees the page at the size an examiner sees it, and annotation is drafted live in a shared document while the candidate talks through their own reasoning. Nothing is drawn for them. The portfolio stays entirely the candidate's own work, which is both an IB and a Cambridge requirement and a line this page will not blur.

What follows is built in the order a Dubai parent actually decides: the market rate by provider model, why art prices move, the drive costed as the line item it is, which area of study eats a materials budget, where marks go missing in a Dubai cohort, the entry calendar counted backwards from a Cambridge key-dates sheet, the academic-honesty boundary, and how to check that whoever teaches your child is permitted to charge for it under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Cambridge 0400 sits in the middle of a longer art route, and the cost of support changes depending on where a candidate joins it. These are the four stages Dubai families most often ask about, with what each one means for a tutoring budget in this emirate.

LOWER SECAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Cambridge Lower Secondary Art and Design

The years where observational drawing is either built or avoided. Candidates who arrive at 0400 without the habit of drawing from a real object in front of them spend Year 10 learning it under deadline pressure, which is the single most expensive catch-up in the subject. Support at this stage is cheap because it is short: a handful of hours on sighting, proportion and measured mark-making rather than a two-year programme.

Dubai schools run Cambridge Checkpoint tests in March, May and October, and art is not among them, so there is no external marker on a candidate's drawing ability before the IGCSE option is chosen. Families here usually discover the gap at the Year 9 options evening. Asking the art department which of its Year 10 entrants it expects to need extra drawing time is a more useful question than asking for a predicted grade.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Art and Design (0400)

Two years of practical work assessed on gathering and research, development of ideas, organisation of visual form and control of media, ending in an externally set component worked under supervised conditions. Which combination of components a candidate sits is decided by the school at entry, not by the family, so the art department is the only reliable source for what your child is actually registered against. Check it in writing before buying tutoring hours.

Dubai centres normally enter the June or November Cambridge series. Every Cambridge centre is allocated to one of six administrative timetable zones, and Cambridge states that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after the wrong zone timetable was used. For a supervised practical component with a fixed window, that is not a clerical detail. Ask your Dubai school which zone it sits in and get the dates from the department rather than a general web search.

AS/AAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

Cambridge International AS and A Level Art and Design (9479)

The continuation route for candidates who want a portfolio strong enough for a foundation course or a design degree. Expectations on independent research and on the volume of personal investigation rise sharply. A 0400 candidate who learned to annotate honestly at 15 arrives here able to work alone, which is the difference between a manageable A Level and an unmanageable one.

Dubai's British-curriculum sixth forms vary widely in whether they offer 9479 at all, and some candidates move school at 16 to get it. Families weighing that move should ask the receiving school how many candidates it entered for the subject in the last series and what the department's studio access looks like outside timetabled lessons, since independent studio time is the resource art A Levels run short of.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Visual Arts

The alternative at 16 for candidates in Dubai's International Baccalaureate schools. The assessment model is different in kind: a comparative study, a process portfolio and a curated exhibition, with written analysis carrying real weight. A 0400 candidate who can write about why a decision was made, rather than what was made, transfers into this comfortably.

International Baccalaureate students account for about seven per cent of Dubai's private-school enrolment, and the 2026-27 intake adds three new IB schools among seven new private schools overall. That means more Dubai families will face the 0400-to-Visual-Arts decision at 16 than did two years ago, and the honest answer is that the written strand, not the practical one, decides whether the move works.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Cambridge 0400 is taught through areas of study, and the one a candidate picks changes both the marks available and the household spend. These are the six Cambridge areas plus the four cross-cutting skills that decide the grade regardless of which area is chosen.

Painting and related media

Cambridge 0400 area of study

The default choice in most Dubai departments, and the one where an unexamined palette costs the most. Sessions work on mixing a small number of pigments the candidate can actually control, on recording those mixing tests inside the sketchbook rather than on loose sheets, and on resisting the urge to over-finish a surface that was already working.

Printmaking

Cambridge 0400 area of study

Generous on marks for development because every state and proof is evidence of a decision. The constraint in Dubai is press access: a candidate without school press time has to design for reduction lino or monoprint, which is still fully creditable. Planning the edition around available equipment is a tutoring conversation, not a compromise.

Three-dimensional studies

Cambridge 0400 area of study

Strong for candidates who think in objects and punishing for candidates who photograph badly. Marks are lost when a resolved maquette is documented in a single flat shot. Sessions cover turntable documentation, scale indication and recording construction stages as they happen rather than reconstructing them afterwards.

Photography, digital and lens-based media

Cambridge 0400 area of study

The area where Dubai candidates most often confuse quantity with investigation. A contact sheet of two hundred frames with no selection rationale evidences nothing. Work here centres on editing down, on stating in writing why one frame survived, and on showing the technical variable that was being tested in each run.

Graphic communication

Cambridge 0400 area of study

Attractive to candidates who already use design software and risky for the same reason. Examiners want to see the hand-drawn thinking behind a digital outcome. Sessions insist on thumbnails, typographic sketching and a visible route from a rough to a resolved layout before any file is opened.

Textiles and fashion

Cambridge 0400 area of study

The area with the heaviest consumables load and the richest sampling evidence. Dyeing and stitch tests photograph well and read clearly as development. The tutoring focus is keeping sample sizes small, labelling every test with what was changed, and designing a final piece that can be finished in the time the candidate actually has.

Observational drawing

Underlying skill across every area

The skill the assessment objectives keep returning to even when the final outcome is digital or constructed. Candidates who can draw what is in front of them score better on gathering and recording because their primary sources are genuinely theirs. Short, timed, repeated drawing is the cheapest intervention available in this subject.

Annotation and written support

Marked alongside every practical page

Annotation that describes the image wastes space. Annotation that names the decision, the alternative rejected and the reason earns marks. Dubai candidates working in a second or third language often know exactly why they made a choice and cannot get it onto the page, which is a coachable problem rather than a language verdict.

Critical and contextual studies

Evidence inside the portfolio

Referencing an artist is not the same as using one. The credit sits in showing what was borrowed, tested and changed. Sessions work on reading one work closely instead of listing five, and on recording the specific technique a candidate tried because of it.

Portfolio sequencing and presentation

Decides how the evidence reads

A portfolio marked out of order loses marks the candidate already earned. Pages need to show a route: source, test, decision, development, outcome. The last six weeks of a 0400 course are usually better spent sequencing and annotating existing work than starting anything new.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Art support is bought in different shapes depending on when a family starts and what the portfolio already contains. These are the three patterns Dubai 0400 households use most, each priced by the hour rather than by a package with hidden terms.

Fortnightly portfolio audit

A standing hour every second week through Years 10 and 11. The candidate uploads the fortnight's spreads beforehand, the tutor reads them against one assessment objective, and the session ends with a named list of pages to make next. This is the pattern that prevents a frantic final term, because evidence accumulates steadily instead of in one exhausted burst.

  • Pages read in advance, so the hour is spent on decisions rather than scrolling
  • One objective per session, named at the start
  • A written page plan issued after every hour
  • Media tests scheduled around what can actually be bought in Dubai

Supervised-component rehearsal block

A short, dense block of timed sessions in the weeks before the externally set component. The candidate works to the clock Cambridge allocates, with the tutor observing and then debriefing, so that the real supervised session is the second or third time the candidate has worked under that constraint rather than the first.

  • Timed runs matched to the allocation the school confirms
  • Preparatory sheets reviewed before the window, not during it
  • Debrief focused on pacing and on what was abandoned too early
  • No tutor contact with the supervised work itself

Annotation and sequencing clinic

Aimed at candidates whose practical work is stronger than their paperwork, which in Dubai is most of them. Several short sessions spent turning existing pages into evidence: writing the decision behind each image, ordering the portfolio so the route is visible, and cutting pages that repeat rather than develop.

  • Annotation drafted in the candidate's own words, spoken first
  • Second-language support that fixes expression without rewriting the thinking
  • A sequencing map for the portfolio before submission
  • Clear marking of which pages add nothing and can be removed

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What a Cambridge 0400 home tutor costs in Dubai, by the kind of hour you are buying

A qualified subject tutor working one-to-one online with a Dubai family charges roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour at market rates read in October 2026. A tutor who travels to the home charges roughly AED 180 to AED 500, and the top of that range is driven almost entirely by distance rather than by expertise. Specialist IGCSE, International Baccalaureate and A Level tutors sit at AED 200 to AED 450 and above. These are published figures from providers and from a rate aggregator, not an IB Gram price list, and they are set out below with the source attached to each band so a parent can check them.

The spread inside a single band is wider than the gap between bands, and that is the part worth understanding before paying anybody. Two tutors can both quote AED 250 for Cambridge 0400 and sell completely different products. One arrives having read the week's sketchbook and leaves a written page plan. The other opens the call, asks what the candidate has been doing, and spends twenty minutes finding out. Across a ten-week term the first costs the same and produces roughly two extra sessions of actual teaching, because none of the hour goes on orientation.

The second thing the table cannot show is availability. Cambridge 0400 is a thin specialism everywhere, and in Dubai the pool of tutors who have read candidate portfolios against the assessment objectives is small. Restricting that pool further to people who live within a thirty-minute drive of your villa is how families end up with a capable general art teacher who has never seen a 0400 mark scheme applied. Removing the travel constraint is the single biggest expansion of choice available, which is the practical argument for video delivery on this subject.

IB Gram's own position on price is deliberately simple on a page full of other people's numbers: the first lesson is free, with no card details taken, and a rate is quoted only after a tutor has seen the portfolio and said how many hours the work actually needs. Quoting a figure for Cambridge 0400 before looking at the sketchbook is guesswork, and the guess is always in the seller's favour.

Why an art hour is priced differently from a maths hour

In a maths subject the evidence a tutor needs is already written down and already marked. A past paper arrives with a script, a mark scheme and a score, and a competent tutor can locate the weakness in the time it takes to read four questions. The diagnosis is nearly free, so the hourly rate pays almost entirely for teaching. Cambridge 0400 inverts that. The evidence is forty pages of practical work with no marks on it, no mark scheme applied, and no indication of which assessment objective each page was supposed to serve.

Somebody has to do that reading. A tutor who does it inside the billed hour spends a third of the session orienting and two-thirds teaching, which is why cheap art hours feel thin. A tutor who does it beforehand hands the whole hour back to the candidate but has to recover the preparation time somewhere, and the honest way to recover it is in the rate. This is the mechanism behind the apparent premium on art tutoring in Dubai, and it is also why the cheapest quoted figure is frequently the most expensive per useful minute.

There is a second, less obvious driver. Practical work is made before it is judged, so feedback has a shelf life. A page plan issued on a Tuesday is worth something if the candidate makes those pages that week and almost nothing a month later, by which time the work has gone somewhere else. Art support therefore has to be scheduled against the candidate's own making rhythm rather than dropped in before an exam, and sustained fortnightly contact over two years is usually a lower total spend than a panicked block of sessions in the final term.

The practical consequence for a Dubai budget is that the useful comparison is not AED per hour. It is AED per portfolio page that actually improved. A family paying AED 320 fortnightly for twenty months, with reading and a written plan included, typically spends less in total than one paying AED 180 weekly for the last two terms and then adding emergency sessions in the fortnight before the supervised component.

03

The drive, the studio and the hours nobody bills

A Dubai in-home tutoring rate contains a journey. Al Barsha to Arabian Ranches at five in the afternoon is not a short trip, and a tutor making that round trip for a single hour is committing closer to three hours of their working day. No tutor absorbs that indefinitely; it surfaces either as a higher hourly figure, a two-hour minimum booking, or a quietly declining willingness to keep the slot when something closer comes along. Families who are told the drive is free are being told something that cannot be true over a two-year course.

Art adds a second logistical cost that other subjects do not have. The work is physical, so either the tutor brings materials or the candidate's own setup has to be adequate. Wet media, printmaking and textiles all need surfaces, ventilation and somewhere a half-finished piece can be left undisturbed. In a Dubai apartment that is often the dining table, and a visiting tutor cannot change that. Online delivery does not solve the space problem either, but it does stop the family paying a travel premium for an hour that still happens at the dining table.

Set against those costs, video has two real drawbacks that are worth naming rather than glossed over. A tutor cannot physically turn a maquette in their hands, and a camera flattens surface quality, so decisions about texture and impasto need the candidate to describe what the tutor is looking at. Both are manageable with a second camera angle and with the habit of photographing work properly, which is a skill the candidate needs anyway because the examiner will also only ever see photographs of some of it.

The comparison table below prices the two formats line by line for a Dubai household. It is deliberately not a list of reasons video wins. Two of the rows favour a visit, and a family for whom studio supervision is the binding constraint should hire somebody local for that and use video for the marking and planning work, which is where most of the marks actually move.

Which 0400 area of study costs the most to resource in Dubai

Families budgeting for Cambridge 0400 usually budget for tutoring and forget the consumables, then discover in Year 11 that the area of study chosen in Year 10 carries a running cost. The spend is not evenly distributed. Textiles and printmaking consume physical material every time a test is run, three-dimensional studies consumes material and storage, and photography front-loads the cost into equipment the candidate may already own. Graphic communication is the cheapest to resource and the most likely to lose marks for thin hand-drawn development.

Dubai adds two local wrinkles. Specialist art supply is concentrated rather than ubiquitous, so a candidate who needs a particular paper weight or a specific dye is usually ordering it, and lead times matter when a deadline is three weeks away. The second is school equipment access. Press time, kilns and sewing equipment sit inside the department, and how much out-of-hours access a candidate gets varies enormously between Dubai centres. Two candidates following the same area of study at different schools can face completely different practical constraints.

None of this needs to change the area of study, and switching late is usually worse than working within a constraint. What it should change is the plan. A candidate with no press access designs a reduction lino or monoprint sequence and evidences the states, which is fully creditable. A candidate without kiln access builds in a material that air-dries and documents construction properly. A tutor's job on this is to make the constraint visible early and design around it, rather than letting a candidate discover in February that the final piece cannot be made.

The table below sets out where the spend and the access risk concentrate in each area, with a cheaper route that does not cost marks. It carries no dirham figures, because material prices vary by supplier and nothing reliable has been sourced for them. An unsourced number on a page like this is worse than no number.

Where 0400 marks go missing in a Dubai cohort, and what each fix costs in hours

  • Gathering and recording: one dated first-hand gathering trip, roughly two hours of planning support
  • Development: two or three annotation sessions on pages that already exist
  • Supervised component: two or three timed rehearsals, scheduled weeks ahead of the window
  • Sequencing: a single session mapping the portfolio order before submission
  • Media control: short repeated tests, not one long session on a final piece

The most common loss is on gathering and recording, and it is almost always the same failure: sources collected from a screen with no first-hand recording attached. A candidate pastes four images of an artist's work, writes a sentence underneath, and has evidenced nothing about their own investigation. The fix is cheap in hours and expensive in effort. One gathering trip to Alserkal Avenue or the Jameel Arts Centre, with dated photographs the candidate took and drawings made in front of the work, converts a weak objective into a strong one in a single weekend.

The second loss is development that is not development. Pages that repeat an idea at slightly different sizes read as output, not as exploration. Examiners are looking for a visible route: a source, a test, a decision, a change made because of the test. Dubai candidates working across three languages often make those decisions perfectly well and record none of them, which is why the annotation clinic is usually the highest-value short intervention available. Two or three hours on existing pages moves more marks than six hours of new making.

The third loss is the supervised component itself, where candidates run out of time because they have never worked to that clock. A candidate who has rehearsed the allocation twice paces differently from one meeting it cold. The fix is a short block of timed runs, with the tutor observing and then debriefing on what was abandoned too early, and it has to happen weeks before the window rather than in the final days when nothing can be changed.

The fourth, quietest loss is sequencing. A portfolio that contains the evidence but presents it out of order makes an examiner reconstruct the route, and reconstruction is where credit leaks. The last stretch of a 0400 course is usually better spent ordering and annotating what exists than beginning anything new. Parents who ask a tutor for extra making sessions in the final month are frequently buying the least productive hours in the whole programme.

06

Entry deadlines sit months before the paper: the 0400 year counted backwards

Cambridge International runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level examinations in a June series and a November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. Dubai centres almost always enter June or November. The detail families miss is how early the administrative chain starts: final entries are submitted by the centre months before anybody sits anything, and once that entry is made the component combination and the tier are fixed.

Lead time is the thing to take from the published calendars, and the series a Dubai candidate can actually sit are June and November. Pearson's International GCSE November 2026 series is used here as the dated worked example because it is documented end to end: the timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, the entry that fixed those papers closed months earlier, and the comparable November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026, with June 2026 results reaching them on 20 August 2026. Cambridge runs on the same rhythm for 0400, its June entries closing in the spring and its November entries over the summer, with the exact day set per series and per timetable zone and issued through the centre. The shape of that timeline, not any one date, is what a Dubai parent should take from it: the entry decision precedes the examination by a full term, and the certificate arrives months after it, so the area of study and component combination has to be settled while the portfolio still looks unfinished.

Every Cambridge centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after the wrong timetable was used. For a supervised practical component with a fixed window this is the single most consequential administrative fact on this page. The only reliable source for your child's dates is the Dubai school's examinations officer, and the question to ask is which zone the centre sits in.

Working the calendar backwards is what turns a tutoring budget into a plan. If the supervised window is roughly ten weeks after final entries, then timed rehearsals belong about four to six weeks before the window, the portfolio audit belongs a term earlier, and the gathering trips belong in the first year. Families who buy support in that order spend less than families who buy it in reverse.

Academic honesty when the assessment is a portfolio

Cambridge 0400 is assessed on work the candidate made, which makes the honesty boundary sharper here than in a written subject. A tutor may teach technique, demonstrate on their own separate sheet, ask questions about a decision, point at an assessment objective and say the evidence for it is missing, and mark a page the way an examiner would. A tutor may not draw, paint, cut, stitch or retouch anything that will be submitted, and may not dictate annotation for the candidate to copy down.

The grey area families ask about most is annotation, because a candidate writing in a second language often cannot express a decision they made perfectly well. The workable line is that the thinking must be the candidate's and spoken first. A tutor can ask what the candidate was testing, listen to the answer, and then help tighten the sentence that captures it. A tutor who supplies the sentence has supplied the thinking, and an examiner reading a portfolio where every annotation sounds like an adult can tell.

The second grey area is the supervised component, and there is no grey in it. Work produced under supervised conditions has no tutor involvement at all, before or during. Preparation happens on the preparatory material in the weeks beforehand, and then the tutor steps away. Any provider offering to help with the supervised piece itself is offering something that would put the candidate's entry at risk, and a parent should treat that offer as disqualifying.

This is also the line that separates honest tutoring from the essay-and-portfolio mills that advertise in this market. Some of them sell finished coursework outright. IB Gram does not supply assessed work in any subject, does not sell portfolio pages, and does not reproduce or distribute Cambridge syllabus documents, past papers or mark schemes. Those sit on cambridgeinternational.org and should be read there, through the school, which is where the authoritative version lives.

Permits, invoices and checking who is teaching your child

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and it is applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system under the service name Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, with a stated completion time of two working days. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students.

Individuals offering private tutoring without that permit are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so no amount is quoted here; a figure circulating online could not be verified against any ministry source. What a parent can do is ask directly whether the person teaching their child holds the permit, and treat an evasive answer as information. The permit is free and takes two working days, so there is no good reason for a working tutor not to hold one.

Two further points matter in Dubai specifically. An operation with premises and staff needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, which is a different instrument issued to a physical centre; no individual tutor and no online platform should describe themselves as holding it. And in Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, with the MoHRE permit's code of conduct carrying a similar restriction. Hiring your child's own class teacher privately is not the shortcut it appears to be.

IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform. It holds no approval, accreditation or licence from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and it operates no office or centre in the UAE. Any provider claiming regulator endorsement for tutoring should be asked to produce the permit number, because the permits that exist are issued for specific things and none of them means what that phrase implies.

Why the search says home tutor and the lesson happens over live video

The phrase in this page's address is the phrase Dubai parents type, and it is worth targeting honestly rather than pretending it means something else. What a family usually means by a home tutor is one-to-one attention on their own child's work, at a time that fits around school and traffic, without a group class. Every part of that is deliverable over video. The part that is not deliverable is somebody physically arriving, and IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE. Home visits are a service run only in India.

Saying so plainly is more useful than the alternative, which is a page that implies a visit and a phone call that quietly explains otherwise. It also allows an honest account of what each format is good for. A visiting tutor can hold a maquette, supervise a wet process and sit with a reluctant fifteen-year-old in a way a screen cannot. An online specialist can be the right person for Cambridge 0400 rather than the nearest person, can read the sketchbook before the hour starts, and can hold the slot when Sheikh Zayed Road does not cooperate.

In practice the sessions look like this. The candidate sets a phone or a document camera over the open sketchbook, so the tutor sees the spread at roughly the size and angle an examiner sees it. Pages are uploaded in advance where possible, so the hour starts with a judgement rather than a search. Annotation is drafted live in a shared document while the candidate talks, and the tutor types what the candidate says rather than what the tutor thinks. A written page plan follows within a day, naming what to make before the next session.

Scheduling is built around the Dubai week. Sessions run on Gulf Standard Time, start late enough to clear the school run in Al Barsha and Umm Suqeim, and move to post-Iftar slots through Ramadan, when studio work at home realistically happens after nine in the evening. Families who travel over the long summer keep the same tutor and the same slot from wherever they are, which on a two-year portfolio course is worth more than it sounds.

Where we tutor

Where Dubai 0400 candidates find first-hand source material

The gathering and recording objective rewards primary sources the candidate collected themselves. Dubai is unusually well supplied with them, and which part of the city a family lives in changes what is reachable on a school night without an hour in traffic.

Al Quoz

Alserkal Avenue sits here: a working cluster of independent galleries and studios in converted warehouses, open most afternoons and free to walk. It is the strongest primary-source destination in Dubai for a candidate who needs drawings made from real work rather than screenshots.

Dubai Design District

Purpose-built around design studios and seasonal exhibitions, with enough signage, typography and industrial detail at street level to fill a graphic communication sketchbook in a single visit. Useful for candidates whose outcome is digital and whose evidence of hand-drawn thinking is thin.

Jaddaf Waterfront

Home to the Jameel Arts Centre, which runs changing exhibitions and a sculpture garden. The garden matters for three-dimensional candidates, who can draw and photograph form in daylight from multiple angles rather than working from a catalogue image.

Al Fahidi and Bur Dubai

The historic district gives wind towers, coral-stone walls, carved doors and the abra crossing. Candidates working on texture, pattern or architectural form get primary material here that no stock library can supply, and the walk is short enough for a weekday afternoon.

Jumeirah

The Etihad Museum and the surrounding low-rise streets suit candidates working on documentary photography or on social and historical themes. Families here are typically close to several British-curriculum schools, so afternoon sessions can start by half past four.

Al Barsha and Umm Suqeim

The densest school cluster in Dubai for IGCSE cohorts, which means heavy after-school traffic between four and six. Online sessions here usually settle at a later slot, and the fishing harbour at Umm Suqeim gives boats, nets and rope as drawing subjects.

Arabian Ranches and Dubai Hills

Villa communities where studio space at home is usually not the constraint but distance is. A tutor driving in from Al Barsha or Jumeirah loses most of an hour each way, which is precisely the cost that online delivery removes from the quote.

Mirdif and Dubai Festival City

Older established communities with a different school set and a long drive to the Al Quoz and d3 gallery clusters. Candidates here benefit from planning one substantial gathering trip per half term instead of several short ones, and from building the sketchbook around it.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Al Barsha, Al Sufouh and Umm Suqeim

Students we support attend long-established British and American schools in this corridor, where art departments tend to be well staffed and option cohorts are large. A candidate here competes inside a strong internal group, so the useful question is which assessment objective the department under-weights rather than whether the teaching is sound.

  • Jumeirah College
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Dubai American Academy
  • Al Mawakeb School Al Barsha

Emirates Hills, Jumeirah Park and the Meadows

A cluster where families often moved school once already, so candidates arrive at 0400 with portfolios begun under a different scheme of work. The first hour of support usually goes on auditing what exists against the Cambridge objectives before any new page is made.

  • Dubai British School Jumeirah Park
  • Regent International School
  • Emirates International School Meadows
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Dubai British School Emirates Hills

Nad Al Sheba, Academic City and Festival City

Schools here draw from villa communities across the eastern side of the city, and candidates often have usable space at home for messier media. Studio access outside lesson time varies sharply between these centres, which changes what a realistic final outcome looks like.

  • GEMS Modern Academy
  • Deira International School

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us what the school has entered

The first useful fact is not the grade target but the registration: which area of study, which component combination, which Cambridge series, and which administrative zone the centre sits in. Ask the art department in writing. Everything in a sensible plan follows from those four answers, and guessing at them wastes paid hours.

  2. 02

Send the portfolio as it stands

Photographs or scans of the sketchbook as it is now, including the pages the candidate is embarrassed by, because those are usually the diagnostic ones. A tutor reads the spreads against the assessment objectives before the trial lesson, which is what makes the free hour a diagnosis rather than an introduction.

  3. 03

    Take the free trial lesson

One hour, no card details, with the sketchbook open on camera. The candidate talks through two or three spreads and the tutor marks them aloud the way an examiner would. By the end both of you know which objective is weakest and whether this particular tutor is somebody your child will actually talk to.

  4. 04

Get the hours quoted after the diagnosis, not before

A rate and an honest number of hours are proposed once the portfolio has been seen. A candidate needing annotation and sequencing work needs a handful of hours. A candidate in Year 10 with no first-hand sources needs a fortnightly slot for a year. The two plans should not cost the same.

  5. 05

    Work the calendar backwards

Gathering trips in the first year, portfolio audits through the course, annotation and sequencing a term out, timed rehearsals four to six weeks before the supervised window. Buying support in that order costs less than buying it in reverse, and the final month is spent ordering evidence rather than making new pages.

  6. 06

Say so if the match is wrong

Tell us after one session rather than after six. Art tutoring depends on a candidate being willing to show unfinished work to somebody, and that either happens in the first hour or it does not. A different tutor is arranged without an argument, and no family is asked to justify the request.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Every dirham figure on this page has a source

The AED bands come from named providers and from Bestimate's Dubai 2026 rate table, read in October 2026, and each is attributed in the table rather than presented as our own price. Three of the six competitor pages researched for this market publish no price at all, and two quote in a currency UAE families do not transact in.

0400 specialism rather than proximity

Cambridge Art and Design is a thin specialism, and choosing a tutor by driving distance across Dubai narrows the pool to whoever lives nearby. Delivering over video means the match is made on whether somebody has read 0400 portfolios against the assessment objectives, which is the thing that actually moves a grade.

The reading happens before the hour

Pages are uploaded in advance and marked against one assessment objective, so the session opens with a judgement instead of a scroll. On a subject where the evidence is forty unmarked spreads, this is the difference between an hour of teaching and twenty minutes of orientation followed by forty of catching up.

A hard line on assessed work

A tutor teaches, demonstrates separately, questions and marks. No page that will be submitted is drawn, finished or retouched by a tutor, no annotation is dictated for copying, and there is no involvement in the supervised component at all. Providers in this market sell finished coursework; that route puts a candidate's entry at risk.

Scheduling that matches the Dubai week

Slots run on Gulf Standard Time, start after the school run clears, and shift to post-Iftar timing through Ramadan. Sessions follow a family that travels over the summer, which on a two-year portfolio course prevents the long gap that usually costs a candidate their gathering evidence.

What we are not is stated as clearly as what we are

IB Gram is an independent matching platform with no UAE office, no regulator approval from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoHRE or the Ministry of Education, and no partnership with the IB, Cambridge or Pearson. Named schools on this page are market context. Nothing here is a grade promise.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How much does a Cambridge IGCSE Art and Design 0400 home tutor charge in Dubai?+

Market rates read in October 2026 put a qualified subject tutor working online with a Dubai family at roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, and a tutor who travels to the home at roughly AED 180 to AED 500. Specialist IGCSE and A Level tutors sit between AED 200 and AED 450 and above, with examiner-tier providers publishing higher. Those are published market figures from providers and from Bestimate's Dubai rate table, not an IB Gram price list. Our own first lesson is free, and a rate is proposed only after a tutor has read the portfolio and said how many hours the work needs.

Why does an art tutor in Dubai quote more per hour than a maths tutor?+

Because the diagnosis is not free. A maths tutor can find a weakness in four questions of a marked past paper. A 0400 tutor has to read thirty or forty unmarked sketchbook spreads, decide which assessment objective each one evidences, and write a page plan the candidate can make that week. A tutor who does that reading inside the billed hour gives you a thinner lesson. A tutor who does it beforehand has to recover the time in the rate. The apparent premium is usually the preparation being paid for honestly rather than hidden.

Does the hourly rate normally cover a tutor reading the sketchbook between sessions?+

Often not, and this is the question worth asking before agreeing any figure in Dubai. Ask directly whether pages can be uploaded in advance, whether they will be read before the session, and whether a written plan follows afterwards. A rate of AED 320 including all three is frequently cheaper per useful minute than AED 180 where the hour starts with the tutor seeing the work for the first time. Get the answer in writing, because the difference across a ten-week term is roughly two extra sessions of actual teaching.

What does a tutor's drive across Dubai add to an in-home art rate?+

Al Barsha to Arabian Ranches at five in the afternoon commits a tutor to close to three hours for one billed hour. That surfaces as a higher rate, a two-hour minimum, or a slot that quietly becomes unreliable when something closer appears. The market in-home band of roughly AED 180 to AED 500 contains that journey whether or not it is itemised. It also shrinks your choice of tutor to whoever lives within a sensible radius, which on a specialism as narrow as Cambridge 0400 is the more expensive consequence of the two.

Is a group art class in Dubai cheaper than one-to-one 0400 support?+

Per hour, almost always. Per useful minute on your child's portfolio, usually not. Cambridge 0400 is assessed on an individual body of work with its own sources, its own development route and its own final outcome, so there is very little a group session can address at once beyond general technique. Group teaching works well for a demonstrated process such as a printing method or a dyeing technique. It works poorly for the marking, annotation and sequencing work where most of the recoverable marks sit, because that is page-by-page and candidate-specific.

How many hours of 0400 support does a Year 11 candidate in Dubai usually buy?+

It depends entirely on what the portfolio already contains, which is why a figure quoted before anybody has seen it is guesswork. A candidate whose practical work is strong and whose paperwork is thin may need a handful of hours on annotation and sequencing. A candidate entering Year 11 with no first-hand sources and no development route needs a fortnightly slot for most of the year, plus timed rehearsals before the supervised window. The honest answer after a free diagnostic hour is a range with a reason attached, not a package.

What do the materials for 0400 cost a Dubai family over the two years?+

No reliable sourced figure exists for Dubai, so none is published here. What can be said is where the spend concentrates: textiles and printmaking consume material with every test, three-dimensional work consumes material and storage, photography front-loads into equipment, and graphic communication is the cheapest to resource. Specialist supply in Dubai is concentrated rather than ubiquitous, so a particular paper weight or dye often has to be ordered with a lead time. Plan material purchases against the deadline, not against the week the idea arrives.

Can a tutor tell us which Cambridge 0400 area of study is cheapest to resource?+

Yes, and more usefully which one fits the access your child actually has. Press time, kilns and sewing equipment sit inside the school department, and out-of-hours access varies sharply between Dubai centres. A candidate without press access can design a reduction lino or monoprint sequence by hand and evidence every state, which is fully creditable. A candidate without kiln access builds in an air-drying material and documents construction stage by stage. The job is to make the constraint visible in Year 10 rather than in February of Year 11.

Did Dubai private school fees change for 2026-27, and does that affect a tutoring budget?+

KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package. For a family budgeting tutoring, that matters as context rather than as a saving: the school line is flat, so a tutoring decision is not competing with a fee rise this year. Dubai's private sector also adds seven new schools for 2026-27, creating 16,846 places, which over time affects the availability of art specialists more than it affects price.

Is VAT included in a Dubai art tutor's quoted hourly rate?+

Ask, and ask for the answer in writing. The UAE tax treatment of tuition is not something this page states as fact, because no Federal Tax Authority citation has been read for it. What a parent can insist on is clarity about the figure they will actually pay: whether the quote is inclusive or exclusive, whether an invoice will be issued, and whether a tax registration number appears on it. A provider unwilling to be specific about the final number is telling you something about the rest of the arrangement.

Does a 0400 tutor working with a Dubai family need a MoHRE permit?+

Yes. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit is granted free of charge for two years, applied for through the MoHRE app, website and e-services with a stated two working day completion time. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Those tutoring without it are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no amounts have been published.

How does Cambridge 0400 sit against the five-subject rule for UAE equivalency?+

For the British track, the Ministry of Education requires five subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one subject at Advanced Level at E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level, and Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five. Art and Design is a subject like any other for that count. Verify the current requirement on moe.gov.ae or with the attestation authority before relying on it; IB Gram does not perform equivalency and tutoring is not a requirement for it.

Can a tutor photograph or digitise the portfolio for us instead?+

A tutor can teach your child how to do it properly and should, because the examiner will only ever see photographs of some of the work. Flat lighting, a square-on angle, scale indication for three-dimensional pieces and turntable sequences for constructed work are all coachable in a single session. What a tutor will not do is handle, retouch or edit anything that will be submitted. Documenting the portfolio is part of the candidate's own practice, and in a subject assessed on their work that distinction is not negotiable.

Our search was for a home tutor in Dubai, so where does the lesson actually happen?+

Over live video, one-to-one, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE; that service runs only in India. The candidate sets a phone or document camera over the open sketchbook so the tutor sees each spread at roughly examiner scale, pages are uploaded in advance where possible, annotation is drafted live in a shared document in the candidate's own words, and a written page plan follows within a day. The trade is a 0400 specialist instead of the nearest available art teacher.

Can 0400 sessions move later in the evening during Ramadan?+

Yes, and for a practical subject that flexibility matters more than usual. Studio work at home during Ramadan realistically happens after Iftar, so sessions shift to post-Iftar slots and the page plans issued in those weeks are shorter and more specific. The same applies to the long Dubai summer: families who travel keep the same tutor and the same slot from wherever they are, which prevents the two-month gap that otherwise costs a candidate the gathering evidence they were meant to collect.

Start with the diagnosis, then the number

The useful sequence for a Dubai family looking at Cambridge IGCSE Art and Design 0400 support is narrow: find out in writing what the school has entered, send the sketchbook as it stands, take the free trial hour with the pages open on camera, and get a quote and an honest number of hours only after somebody has read the work against the assessment objectives. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with no tutor sent to a UAE address. The AED figures on this page belong to the market and are attributed; ours are quoted after the diagnosis, because a price set before the portfolio has been seen is a guess made in the seller's favour.
